Product Description

Designed for literature-based writing courses, Text Book introduces students to the idea that literary texts and ordinary spoken and written language share many of the same features. By providing imaginative methods and unique assignments that let students work with those features in their writing, Text Book involves students in the processes of exploring literature creatively, not simply consuming and analyzing it, helping them understand literature "from the inside out."

Great Approach for Teaching Writing 5 by .. Charles Alexander (Tucson, AZ United States)
This book takes some getting used to. I tried it once with mixed success, and didn't try it again for awhile. But I kept thinking about what it offered, its "mystory" approach in which authors immerse themselves in their subjects and write work that is not necessarily objective, but more illuminating for its passionate commitment. So eventually I started teaching the method again, and it elicited absolutely the best writing from college freshmen and sophomores that I have ever had in my classes. Once the teacher understands both the method and the elasticity of the method, it is, well . . . a beautiful thing. I would recommend this book wholeheartedly, though I might want to caution the teacher to live with the book for a few months or even a year before they begin using it in classes. It's an exciting leap.

Be prepared to be confused 1 by .. Melissa Maletto (Gerostudent)
This is a horrible text book. It was written dreadfully. It's as if the author actually wants you to not understand the material. I am a former educator and current grad student and I have never come across such a bad text book. I am astounded. You'll need a team of tutors to use this book.

Ew, Math. I've used better texts. 1 by .. A. (United States)
I had to purchase this book for a college class; in all honesty, I think it could have been organized better, and it was a bit hard to understand. My opinion might be a little biased, however, because I hate math and I'm not good at it to begin with.

Ace Your Stats Class 5 by .. Jill M. Pope ()
This is a must have text for anyone trying to learn stats. I am currently in a stats class. The text assigned was mostly theoretical with very little real world explanations and examples. I panicked! I started looking for supplementary material so that I could understand this topic. I was swayed by the reviews of this book. Please take a minute and review them for the fifth edition. The reviews rave about the book. So I bought it, despite the cost. I am so thankful that I did. I am beginning to understand statistics and even enjoy it. I'm finding myself looking forward to my study times so I can learn more. I give all the credit to this book. The author uses real world examples that I can relate to, has lots of examples and reasons why you would use one statistic over another. The other thing I like is that there are lots of exercises for practice that include the answers in the back. I say BUY IT! You won't regret it, I promise.

Stats book 5 by .. J. Johnson ()
The service is great, and it came in just a few days. The book was cheaper at amazon.com then it is at school. It has a tutorial that is very helpful as well.

It satisfies my conditions for adoption, but I decided against it 4 by .. Charles Ashbacher (Marion, Iowa United States(cashbacher@yahoo.com))
I evaluated this book for possible use in the basic statistics class that I teach at the college level. When conducting such evaluations, I consider the following points essential:

*) Does it cover the appropriate material?
*) Is the material presented in the order that I prefer or one that I can adapt to my needs?
*) Is the text understandable, can the students read and understand it on their own?

My minimal list of appropriate material includes:

*) Basic probability.
*) The normal distribution.
*) Confidence intervals.
*) Hypothesis testing using the z and t tests.
*) Hypothesis testing with proportions.
*) Testing the difference between means and proportions.
*) Correlation and regression.
*) Chi-square tests.
*) Analysis of variance.

All of these topics are covered in this book. Nonparametric statistics are also examined. The order of coverage matches the previous list, which also conforms to the order that I prefer.
I also found the text understandable, although a bit thicker than I prefer. This can be attributed to the inclusion of sections on how to use technology to compute the statistical values. The problems are solved using Minitab, TI-83 or 84 and Excel. The only technology I use in my class is a simple calculator, so these sections are superfluous to me.
At the end, I decided not to adopt this text, While I consider it to be well done and suitable in all ways, I will continue to use a smaller book that does not have the "Using technology" sections. Given the consistent sameness of basic statistics texts, adoption decisions are made based on such simple and often minor differences.

Product Description

While the original Biblical text was written from an Ancient Hebraic perspective, all modern translations of the Bible are written from our modern western perspective. This traditional approach to translation does allow for ease in reading but it erases the original Hebraic style and meaning of the text. In addition, translations take many liberties by removing, changing or adding words from the text in order to "fix" the text for the English reader. The Mechanical Translation is a new and unique style of translation that will reveal the Hebrew behind the English by translating the text very literally and faithfully to the original Hebrew text. A great tool for those interested in studying the Bible who have no Hebrew background as well as for those who are learning to read the Bible in its original Hebrew language. Features: . An introduction to the Hebrew language and grammar. . The Hebrew text from the Biblia Hebraica Leningradensia. . A literal word for word translation of the Hebrew text. . A revised translation for understandability in English. . A dictionary of words defined from an Hebraic perspective. . A concordance of all words found in the book of Genesis.

A tool with great potential for thematic study 5 by .. Mago (SW Iowa)
I happened to be preparing a curriculum for a class when this book arrived. I found it to be immediately valuable to confirm to me that the 'spirit' hovering over the face of the deep in Genesis 1:2 was mechanically translated 'wind'. This will be an even greater tool if it is added to the translations available for search in the various e-programs.

have not studied Hebrew language 5 by .. D. Brock (Georgia)
helpful for someone who has not studied Hebrew language in a more indepth study of Old Testament

Nothing new here 1 by .. Paul Stevenson (Silver Spring, Maryland, USA)
"The Mechanical Translation is a new and unique style of translation that will reveal the Hebrew behind the English by translating the text very literally and faithfully to the original Hebrew text." So claims the author/publisher's blurb. However, what he describes has been around for centuries: interlinear translation.

Some parts of the Septuagint (ca. 3rd-2nd centuries B.C.) show signs of having originated this way. A Jew named Aquila produced a painfully literal Greek translation of the Hebrew Scriptures in the 2nd century A.D. Codex Sangallensis, a 9th century Greek manuscript of the NT, has Latin interlinear glosses. Several interlinear editions of the NT have been published in the last two centuries, as well as at least two interlinear OT's (the NIV one by Kohlenberger and Green's own idiosyncratic one). Jay P. Green has as his marginal version virtually the same text as his interlinear text. If memory serves, he actually published a NT with just his interlinear text and called it the King James II version.

On his website, the author makes the following claim about this book: "The Mechanical Translation will provide a consistent translation where each Hebrew word, prefix and suffix are translated exactly the same way every time." Has he been inspired by the "concordant" translation of Robert Young, first published in 1863 under the title "Young's Literal Translation"? Though Young had no computers available, he did set out to produce as mechanically uniform a translation as he could. Others have published works of a similar nature in the 20th century.

Thus, Jeff Benner's method is hardly new. And when I consider the level of scholarship displayed in his "Ancient Hebrew Lexicon of the Bible," I shudder to think of the sorts of things he may have included in his allegedly "literal" translation of Genesis.

An eye-opener! 4 by .. Mike Thompson (Boston, USA)
To benefit from this book you really have to know some Hebrew. If you are familiar with English translations of Genesis and you think you know some Hebrew (that's my situation) then this book will introduce you to the huge gulf between ancient Hebrew and modern English. I find this subject very interesting.
The book is good for study and for keeping handy for when you read a passage in a (translated) Bible. This book by Benner will show you what the translator HAS ADDED and that wasn't in the original Hebrew.

For those with ASL experience, but wonderful! 5 by .. ()
This book is a fascinating study of the linguistics of ASL. I have read other reviews that commented about the book's complexity. Yes, it's true, this book is not for someone just starting to study the language. However, in a classroom setting, a student in a more advanced level will find the book quite rewarding to read. Dennis Cokely and Charlotte Baker-Shenk have produced a thoroughly researched set of books. So, to those interested, I say, " Don't shy away from the book's complexity, just be serious about wanting to learn it!" Not for those just wanting to learn 'hi, how are you'!

Not for solo beginner - appears to be classroom type text. 1 by .. ()
Its appears this book is meant for a classroom setting as the book itself indicates there is a "teacher-text" and video involved. Overwhelming and confusing right from the start. Definiately not for someone unfamiliar with signing or someone trying to learn on their own.

Great for Alumni! 5 by .. H. Anderson (Seattle, WA)
I bought this for my friend's two year old daughter - we are both UW-Madison alums living in Seattle. The book has lots of photographs of various things around campus, including lessons on colors and numbers using Wisconsin-related items. Her daughter carries it around constantly saying "Bucky Badger!" and also lobes the picture of the hockey team! It is a great book for us to share our memories of Madison with her, even though we live so far away. :)

These Books Have Helped Me Find Inner Peace and Life's Purpose 5 by .. Joni R. Lelis ()
Without this book and what it represents I would be lost in life. It has given me meaning and purpose to continue through hard times. Through it I have come to know that God knows and loves me, that I am His son and that He has a plan for all of us: We are here on earth to learn and to grow to be more like Him. But he knew we would make mistakes and sin and therefore, He provided us a way to be forgiven through the eternal sacrifice of His son, Jesus Christ. By repenting and accepting Christ as our Savior we can be purified and return to live with our Father in Heaven after this life. I know the Book of Mormon is the word of God as recieved and written by prophets of old in the Americas. I know that it was translated by the power of God through Joseph Smith and through Joseph Smith, God established His true church in our day: The Church of jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints

The BEST book of our day. 5 by .. Mississippi Salt (Draper, Utah)
I am a convert to the LDS church. I've read the Book of Mormon four times cover to cover. The more I read the Book of Mormon, the more the pages come alive. Combined with prayer and an open heart, I knew without a doubt that if there is a true church on this planet, the LDS church has it goin' on. (and for the ding dongs that say the LDS church isn't Christian, let me remind him/her... it's the Church of JESUS CHRIST of Latter Day Saints. - that statement gets so old). : )

If there is ANY doubt in believing this book or the church is true, I suggest reading the Book of Mormon when you have a sincere open heart, you read the Book of Mormon and you pray to get your own answer to know if it's true... for YOURSELF. Also, take what's called the "Missionary Discussions." The LDS missionaries will go through the teachings of the LDS church and you can ask all the questions you want.

Mormon Church's Sacred Texts: The Bible, Book of Mormon, etc. 5 by .. Y.James ()
Wow, Amazing... The Last 2 Books to be rcvd on earth from God. These books are the instruction manuals to Living, in Biblical Time and in Our Time: That means NOW. A Christian Religion that teaches the True Meaning of Love and life.

False Doctrine 1 by .. CB ()
I implore you to study the founders and learn of the FULL teachings of LDS before getting involved. LDS is NOT a Christian religion. The basic tenants of Mormonism contradict the bible. It doesn't teach of one true god as the Bible does. It teaches of countless gods. Mormonism teaches man (not woman) can in fact become a god and rule over their own earth. It also teaches Jesus is the same as you and I except he was the 1st born. It teaches Satan is the spirit brother of Jesus (not biblical). Mormonism is a works based religion vs. salvation by faith (Eph 2:8-9). At the end of the bible (Gen 22:18), it tells us not to add to or take away from this book ... which is exactly what Mormonism does. Mormonism is filled with deception, racism, polygamy, and false prophesies. According to the founder, Joseph Smith, ALL other faiths are an abomination. Study up. After his "vision" that "told him not to join any other church but to start his own", he tried to join another church. There are many books that expose Mormonism for what it is > e.g. "Reasoning From the Scriptures with Mormons" etc. Please thoroughly research this faith system before getting involved as you will be forbidden to read "apostate literature". They make it extremely difficult to leave.
