 Author : Jerry Mander Number of Pages : 376 Release Date : 1978-03-01 Publisher : Harper Perennial List Price : $13.95 Amazon Price : $7.64 Used Price : $3.00 |
Product Description A total departure from previous writing about television, this book is the first ever to advocate that the medium is not reformable. Its problems are inherent in the technology itself and are so dangerous -- to personal health and sanity, to the environment, and to democratic processes -- that TV ought to be eliminated forever. Weaving personal experiences through meticulous research, the author ranges widely over aspects of television that have rarely been examined and never before joined together, allowing an entirely new, frightening image to emerge. The idea that all technologies are "neutral," benign instruments that can be used well or badly, is thrown open to profound doubt. Speaking of TV reform is, in the words of the author, "as absurd as speaking of the reform of a technology such as guns." Customer reviews Very interesting book... by .. MattG (USA) This book is very interesting. I highly recommend. I stopped watching TV 3.5 years ago. The upside of this is that I am happier, my brain works better, and I feel like I have more free time. The downside is that I definitely feel left out when others are talking about a new show or the big game.
Jerry Mander is able to articulate many of the feelings I had about TV, but did not know how to express. Also good to know, that although a minority, there are many out there who have the same view of TV.
Even if you have no desire to eliminate TV from your life, I would still recommend this book. It will at least put the television experience in historical context.
Good work Jerry Mander!
Was it just me???? by .. Eva (Los Angeles, CA) or was that book almost impossible to read? I'm against children watching television and was hoping for a book that would support my view. I couldn't follow it, and in the end I didn't understand the four arguments. Okay, maybe it is just me, but I'll stick to Marie Winn's "The Plug-In Drug."
WOW WOW WOW by .. Andrew Joseph Pegoda (Houston area, Texas) WOW! This book is amazing and so true. One of my college professors (who does not watch tv) recommended this book, after I read it, I stopped watching tv. That was one of the best choices I have made in a long time. This is a must read for everyone! BE TV FREE!!
Intellectual View Of The Idiot Box by .. Elliot Malach (Galveston, Tx) This is one of the most thought provoking books I have ever read. Everyone who owns a television set should read this book. (Except maybe Ted Turner)
After I finished the book and watched TV, I started looking at what Jerry brought up in the book, instead of what was actually on the screen. Everything fell into place.
This book may have been published 30 years ago, but everything he says is applicable in today's television reality.
THROW OUT THE IDIOT BOX !!! by .. Reviewer () They don't call it an idiot box for nothing. Television has morphed into a pathetic invention over the years. What started as a revolutionary invention, has become nothing more than CONSTANT advertising, biased news, and stupid programming. Reality TV is a great example. Take a bunch of pathetic wannabe's, put them in a house, and watch the BS unfold! Is this what people should be doing with their precious time on this Earth? Watching a steady stream of advertising and mindless programming? Our morals are also going down the toilet with graphic shows like CSI and so on. It's not enough to watch people die, now we have to see them die the most horrible deaths one can imagine. As you click through the channels you'll either be bombarded by commercials or assaulted by one stupid show after another. Kudos to this book. I have cancelled my cable service and will never again own a TV. At least the internet is content specific. There is a lot of bad stuff on the internet, but I don't have to click through it to get to my preferred content. The crap on the internet only shows up if I search for it. Whereas TV is an endless stream of crap. TV has become a mindless idiot box, which sucks the life out of people, by giving them a way to "hide" from reality. Let's not make new friends in real life, let's watch a show called "Friends" instead. Let's not read news from a number of online sources, let's be told what to think by our local news anchor. Let's not jetski, surf, run, play, travel, cook, date, etc., in real life, let's watch others do it on TV. GET A LIFE!!! Get out and live your life, and throw the idiot box in the trash where it belongs!

Customer reviews The Best Television Book Ever by .. () When I was in film school there was a lot of film history and film theory, and no one talked about television often enough for us to learn anything worth while about it. I now work as a television director, and it was this book that taught me the "business" aspects of the industry. Without this book I would probably be out of work or directing the local news someplace like Lima, Ohio.
An excellent resource by .. William D. Tompkins (New York, New York USA) This book (textbook) is an excellent resource for just about everything in TV. The disk included is a great utility to have for printing out your own contracts. I only with this book could be updated, say, every two years.
Stolen 3 times... This book is hot!!! by .. Ronald R. Hebert (Syracuse, NY USA) This book is so hot that it's been stolen from my office library 3 times. I'm on my 4th purchase of this book. I felt like I could have an intellegent conversation about any aspect of the television business after using this book. It is my main resource for getting quick answers that are easy to understand. This is required reading for those getting started and a great resource for those that have been in the industry a while. Imagine the Future, Study the Past by .. Julia Bassett (Norwich, VT United States) This Business of Television is a landmark volume in our practice (micro-economic forecasting for the entertainment industry). Here are the top three reasons why. Reason # 3: it is incredible that guys of this stature would take the time to compile such an essential and complete perspective of the television business. Goodenough, a seasoned entertainment lawyer, law professor, and a scholar pioneering the study of law and evolutionary biology, brings the structure and rigor, while Blumenthal, a prolific TV, multimedia, and online entertainment producer and businessman brings the been-there-done-that street savvy. Reason # 2: it is, after all, the business that pays for the content (the subscriber, pay-per-view, advertising, syndication, and the latest, e-commerce revenue models) and the content that drives the migration to new technology (streaming media webcasting and video-on-demand, interactive TV, and wireless). The clear understanding of the financial systems supporting television and video entertainment offered by Oliver and Howard in this book facilitates the modeling of future monetary transactions. Reason # 1: video programming spread from broadcast to cable and then to satellite in one generation. The last decade found it spreading to the PC via CD-ROM, DVD, and broadband Internet. In the future it will be found on our cell phones, wristwatches, car seat backs, and refrigerators. There will be innovations in business arrangements along the way, but those who cannot converse in the language of economics will be doomed. The second edition proudly bears a jacket quote by Morty Morton, former producer of the Late Show with David Letterman, who remarked, "This Business of Television has gotten me through years of moderate success in the TV business. I'm now ready to burn the damn thing and open a restaurant."

Product Description Written in clear and lively prose, Television explains how television programs and commercials are made, and how they function as producers of meaning. Author Jeremy Butler demonstrates the ways in which cinematography and videography, acting, lighting, set design, editing, and sound combine to produce meanings that viewers take away from their television experience. This popular text teaches students to read between the lines, encouraging them to incorporate critical thinking into their own television viewing. Television provides essential critical and historical context, lucidly explaining how different critical methods have been applied to the medium, such as genre study, ideological criticism, and cultural studies. Hundreds of illustrations from television programs introduce the reader to the varied ways in which television goes about telling stories, presenting news, and selling products, and a companion Web site ( www.TVcrit.com) supplements the text with color frame grabs and illustrative video clips. Highlights of this third edition include: *new segments on “reality” television and television animation since 1990; *an updated and expanded chapter surveying critical methods applied to television; *a wide variety of examples, including recent television shows; and *a supplemental DVD to provide teachers with video examples and exercises. With its distinctive approach to examining television, this text is appropriate for courses in television studies, media criticism, and general critical studies. In addition, Television will encourage critical thinking in television production courses. Customer reviews Interesting Text Book by .. H. Parrish (Santa Cruz, CA) I was required to buy "Television: Critical Methods and Applications" for my Film and Television class, and it is by far the most interesting text book i've read so far in my college career. It addresses advanced concepts in language that is easy to follow and understand.
Author Comments by .. Jeremy G. Butler (Tuscaloosa, AL USA) Television: Critical Methods and Applications encourages readers to think critically about TV. Videography, editing, acting, set design, lighting and sound are analyzed and explained in terms of how they are used to tell stories, present news, and sell products to TV viewers. This student-friendly text provides critical and historical contexts, discussing how critical methods have been applied to the medium and highlighting the evolution of television style through the decades. Television is illustrated with hundreds of frame grabs from TV programs. Its companion Website presents color versions of these black-and-white figures and augments them with video clips, sample student papers, syllabi, and other material. If you are planning on ever working in television, read this book. by .. Celeste M. Purdy (Los Angeles) I read this book to help prepare me for what I would never know going into a writers room , or pitching to the showrunners. This helped me get to that point and to know how and what to expect when I get there, which I believe is soon. Thanks Lee.
More involved than you realize by .. Victor Gischler (the wilds of oklahoma) This book on writing for television is simply a must read if you plan on breaking into the business. But even if you never plan to write a single script, it's simply a very interesting and insightful glimpse into the world of television. The authors convey useful information with wit and style. Writing for TV isn't as simple as you might think. I was surprised and intrigued by all the intricacies of the industry.
Want to write for television? Buy this! by .. Paulo Joe Jingy (Sanger, Texas) I love this book. I got it on a Saturday afternoon and read it within twenty-four hours. (And that includes all the time I spent reading and rereading parts of it, to my family and friends). It has officially joined Martell's "The Secrets of Action Screenwriting" and Trottier's "The Screenwriter's Bible" as one of my three "go-to" reference books. This one will get worn out. And I don't even watch TV, anymore. It's only 135 pages. (Well, 209 pages when you count the extra 74 pages of beat sheets, writer's outlines and treatments of TV programs, which were bought and in most cases produced Real examples). It's concise, but packed with useful information. This isn't a basic "how-to" book. It assumes you're already a writer (and that you know the correct structure for television). It's daunting, what you'll be up against, (and the authors don't sugarcoat it), but if you want to write for television--study this book, apply the lessons it teaches, and it will give you a huge head start. Within twenty pages, I had a better understanding of how a television series works then I would have ever figured out on my own. If you haven't heard or don't understand the term *franchise* as it applies to TV, you'd better buy this book, if you really want to write for television. It seems obvious to me, now, but that's only because the authors made it obvious. And most of the lessons apply to all screenwriting, or writing in general, or just doing business. It's like I was a given a cheat-sheet by reading this book and, I guess, that's exactly what it is. These guys don't only say it--they've lived it. From both sides. Writing and pitching--and taking pitches and hiring writers. They back it all up with real-life examples and anecdotes. Even if you aren't a writer, this book is fun to read. I really enjoyed the examples of how to and how *not* to pitch in this book. The authors gave me a whole new attitude and more confidence. (At least in theory--I'd probably still go into brain-lock ... when it came right down to the pitch. Or worse yet--become a Mr. Blabbermouth). But at least I have a firmer grasp of what I need to do and how I should present myself and my writing, when (or if) I pitch. This one is well worth it.

Customer reviews SAC 375 an Exercise in Patience by .. H. L. Korman (Ann Arbor, MI) This book was purchased for a class at the U of M. It is a pretty detailed book about the cultural discourses of television, its methods of production, genre categorization and the social influences on society. It is a multi national view. Articles are really interesting but often long winded and convoluted. If you are into this kind of thing--this is the book for you.

Product Description First published in 1976, Television: The Critical View set the foundation for the serious study of television, becoming the gold standard of anthologies in the field. With this seventh edition, editor Horace Newcomb has moved the book from one merely intended to legitimize the critical inquiry of television to a text that reflects how complex critical approaches to television have become today. Comprised of virtually all new selections that deal with both classic and contemporary programming, the seventh edition adds new material on television history, the reception context of television, and international programming such as Chinese soap operas and Brazilian telenovelas. Television: The Critical View remains a well established and critically acclaimed text essential for courses in critical studies, communication studies, cultural studies, media history, television criticism, television history, and broadcasting. Customer reviews Television is NOT mindless entertainment! by .. Joshua Minton (West Chester, Ohio USA) I was assigned this book in a college course on television as popular culture. I seriously struggled with the text at first, but luckily I didn't sell it back. After rereading it again, it has completely smashed the myth that nothing on television is culturally viable. Do not fall into the trap of believing there is no culture left in America. This book will teach how to engage your television in a way that is as mentally stimulating as anything I can imagine. Do yourself a favor and get this book! It might take you a couple reads, but it's well worth it. Enjoy. (I took points off for density, but I have the 5th ed.)

One of the first times I felt like sending a book back.
Writing for Television, Radio, and New Media by .. Eileen Malone (San Francisco) This is the seventh edition of this book which, although apparently written as a text for use in college courses, actually serves very well for those of us who are interested in writing for special audiences, i.e., electronic media and video productions, etc. It's completely up to date and even a little ahead of itself, which is no mean feat in this age of rapid technology. I'm impressed with the way the writing principles and techniques are put across, but mostly with all the examples of what this kind of script should actually look like, on paper. Included are chapters on interviews and talk shows, corporate and children's programs, plays, everything. The book is quite expensive, but when I think about how much it will be referred to and constantly skimmed for new information, I can certainly justify the price. I am a creative writing teacher sometimes and a freelance writer all the time. As the author of The Complete Guide to Writers Groups, Conferences and Workshops (Wiley), I write the subsequent spin-off Ask Eileen column for iUniverse and America Online's Writers Club. I get tons of inquiries about how to write for the new interactive media and find this book a marvelous resource. It covers every aspect, leaves no stone unturned. I'm always referring to books on writers and writing and this one stands more than a cut above the rest. Oh, and one more thing,it's responsible. It doesn't pretend to be a quick-fix to making tons of money; it emphasizes professionalism in the best sense of the word. It's a fine investment, a fine, fine piece of work.
