Customer reviews Only 4 *'s because it's a calendar, but anyway... by .. William A. Zizzo (New York, USA) ...I'm one of those people who don't know how to exist outside of the monotinous 9-5 rat-race and as soon as I got this calendar I was overjoyed! Now I can sit in my cubicle and envision all the things I want/need/wish I had rather than mutter explitives under my breath. One day I was just getting to work, totally psyched about the new day's page, when I realized it was gone. Unbelievable! So I sat at my desk and envisioned my calendar. I tried tapping into the power of attraction, softly speaking and eventually coming to a crecendo shouuting "UNIVERSE RETURN THAT WHICH I HAVE EARNED TO ME!" Sure enough, the next thing I know BAM the calendar hits me in the head (I also heard my secretary saying something like "it fell on the floor dumbass"). Simply marvelous!
Look, you want to feel good about yourself for less than $15? Give that money to a homeless guy and stop whining.
The Secret to Truly Understanding...The Secret by .. Jennifer Blanchard (Houston, TX) This little desk calendar-type book will help you to truly understand how to apply what you learned in The Secret movie. I try to watch my Secret DVD once a month as a refresher to keeping my thoughts focused on the positive, but doing that still didn't help me to understand The Secret as well as this little "book" did.
The Secret Daily Teachings are a MUST for anyone who watched the Secret and wants to start making positive changes in their life and way of being.
Yes! This can make a difference! by .. kellz () I have to admit that I LOVED the Secret. I even bought the DVD. So, this one was a no-brainer. Mostly, it helps me to read and feel positive, which can sometimes be the hardest thing to do. It's one of those book you keep on your nightstand and refer back to and it can help zap a bad mood, as well. I highly recommend this one, along with How To Be Wanted: Use the Law of Attraction to Date the Man You Most Desire and Live the Life You Deserve.
A Daily Dose of Positivity! by .. Bob Bishop (Kansas City) Just got this "book" as a Christmas gift. It's actually more like one of those desk calendars, where you pull off a sheet every day.
I think it's great. Have it next to my computer now, so I can read a page every morning when I check my email. The book starts on "Monday" so you can start at any time, not just on the first of the month or the first of the year.
I didn't want to wait until Monday, so I started Thursday and did the first four things right away. One was to make a list of 100 things I am grateful for and FEELING the gratitude. This was a great exercise and I immediately felt better after doing it.
To give you another example, today's exercise was about listening to "feedback" from your feelings and how you can change the feelings you have to create the world around you.
I am thankful for this book and feel it will help me to keep on track with my "inside game" of keeping positive.
YES!!! The Secret, One Day at a Time!! by .. Jenae Jenkins (New York) I LOVE THIS BOOK!! I think this is the best version of the Law of Attraction, since it is a constant reminder for us to take advantage of it in our lives.
I have been a big fan of Rhonda Byrne, so I was pleasantly surprised to log in Amazon and see she had a new book. What a perfect gift to myself, to start to new year off right.
Of course, I've already started on it. Why wait until January 1?
The is one of the best parts about this books. It's made to use daily, but there is no attachment to a certain date. You can start using it immediately.
If you liked the Secret, you will really love this.
For those who are interested in the "one day at a time" concept, you may also enjoy Ask, Believe, Receive - 7 Days to Increased Wealth, Better Relationships, and a Life You Love (BoldThought.com Presents) as it has a "list" of things you can to each day to really energize the Law of Attraction in your life.
The Law of Attraction was all over the place a couple of years ago. It's not on Oprah right now, but It's still as valid as it ever was. And believe me, Oprah is still using it daily!!
That's the secret. No pun. HA! Use it DAILY. These books will help you to do just that.
Thank you, Rhonda. Please keep 'em coming!

 Author : Wilbert McKeachie Edition : 12 Number of Pages : 407 Publisher : Wadsworth Publishing List Price : $61.95 Amazon Price : $34.50 Used Price : $45.98 |
Product Description McKeachie's Teaching Tips is a handbook designed to provide helpful strategies for dealing with both the everyday problems of teaching at the university level, and those that pop up in trying to maximize learning for every student. The suggested strategies are supported by research and are grounded in enough theory to enable teachers to adapt them to their own situations. The author does not suggest a "set of recipes" to be followed mechanically, but gives teachers the tools they need to deal with the ever changing dynamics of teaching and learning. Customer reviews highly recommended for all phd students by .. Laura Guerrero (London, Ontario) You could stumble into each class paying as much attention as possible, trying very hard to understand how to become a better teacher, reflecting after class upon what you did well and what you did not do well ... or you could read McKeachie's book and take all of his experience and that of his co-authors into your repertoire of teaching tips.
One could dread reading a book that talks too much about the details and administrative issues that may arise in teaching. One could also dread a book that speaks only about philosophical issues in teaching. One does not need to dread this book because it addresses both practical and philosophical matters but not in excruciating details. It is written by an intelligent group for intelligent readers and yet it is simple prose, not the pretentious academic jargon that I so often encounter.
I loved it and highly recommend it to all PhD students, junior faculty, and faculty teaching others how to teach.
Mostly buzz words and common sense by .. leprendun (Bloomington, IN, USA) This book was only slightly helpful in my classes. The advice in this book sounds good to educators with its trendy terminology and emphasis on some amorphous "deep learning" but many students hate the collaborative exercises in this book and shut off to being taught in this manner. McKeachie is writing to other educators, none of whom understand how students in this generation actually think. Although most of the book was junk, there was the rare teaching strategy I found useful, but none of them were particularly ground-breaking or innovative.
Useful at various levels. by .. DianeVDO (South Dakota) This book contains much information that is essential for a new college
instructor. For those of us who have been in the field, it also offers
an opportunity to reflect on class policies and teaching approaches through the lens of current thinking in cognitive psychology and practice in education.
Crucial Tips for the Enterprising and Advanced Instructor by .. doomsdayer520 (Pennsylvania) There's a reason this book has gone through 12 editions over several decades, and that's because Wilbert McKeachie is the most widely respected expert on matters of college teaching. This latest edition is up to date with the latest theory and practice, and McKeachie has certainly not fallen into the pattern that is common with many multiple-edition books, in that he has avoided simply adding quick cosmetic updates. A look at the table of contents will tell you all you need to know about this expansiveness and inclusiveness of McKeachie's tips, and it's hard to imagine any area of the discipline that he hasn't covered. The only real issue with this book is that it is focused on teaching environments in which small class sizes or receptive administrators will allow for more personalized teaching strategies. However, not everyone will have that luxury, and other environments (especially large classes) are typically treated as mere exceptions and receive only cursory coverage. Another issue with the quality of this edition is some of the chapters that have only been edited by McKeachie but have been written by his colleagues, because these outside submissions damage the overall consistency of the book and the authors tend to focus on their own research and theories, as opposed to McKeachie's universal wisdom. [~doomsdayer520~]
This book gets better with each new edition by .. Howard Aldrich (Chapel Hill, NC USA) For the 12th edition of this book, McKeachie has added more valuable chapters that will benefit experienced as well as novice college instructors. Each chapter is fairly short -- often no more than 5 or 6 pages -- and edited to eliminate "fluff." Each quickly gets to the point and offers practical suggestions for such things as how to handle problem students in the classroom, how to create good test questions, and how to handle sticky issues that come up in grading. McKeachie has kept up with technology, too, and there is a new chapter on "teaching with technology" and an awareness throughout the book that today's students often prefer electronic media to face-to-face communication. The book is loosely structured and thus chapters can be read in any order. I especially recommend the series of chapters on testing and grading, as they provide great advice even for instructors who think they've heard everything. I use this book in my course on college teaching, along with Joe Lowman's book Mastering the Art of College Teaching and Robert Boice's Advice for New Faculty Members. This trio of books will serve you well, especially if you have never been formally trained in how to organize and run a college course.

Customer reviews Some Unique Ideas for Effective Teaching by .. Jan Peczkis (Chicago IL, USA) As an experienced elementary teacher, I especially appreciated the relatively novel features of this book. For instance, while discussing the layout of the classroom for effective learning, Johnson mentions the distracting effects of classroom odors, and recommends that the teacher invest in an air purifier. She notes that music being played can calm the children. And, when discussing children who have reading difficulties, she mentions scotopic sensitivity. This is the problem caused by the high contrast between black print on white paper, which is often aggravated by fluorescent lighting. One solution to this problem is the provision of transparent, colored overlays to cover the printed page.
Johnson opposes ability grouping. She also strongly opposes forcing children to read out loud who don't feel comfortable doing so. This only humiliates them.
She eschews the authoritarian approach of teacher-student relations in favor of one based on mutual respect. As an example, she mentions a cowboy (Craig Cameron) who trains horses to accept their saddles (pp. 112-114) instead of chasing them, confronting them, and forcing the saddles on them. She believes that all teachers should study Cameron's methods and apply them to children.
Despite respecting their students, teachers often still have difficulties getting respect from their students. Johnson (p. 25, 236) believes that this stems from the teacher, perhaps unconsciously, projecting an "I am here to fix you and save you" attitude. Children then get a sense of being inferior, stupid, or wrong, and react accordingly.
As for grading, Johnson comments: "Instead of dumbing down the curriculum when you work with unmotivated or underachieving students, try smartening them up instead." (p. 167). Also: "Ironically, the students who claim to care the least about school are the same ones who complain the most about the bad grades they earn." (p. 160). She is a firm believer in frequent progress reports. In some classes, students can earn at least a "C", regardless of how they do on tests, if there are no unexcused absences and all the assignments are adequately completed.
Her book ends with a list of useful websites (URLs) for teachers.
Not just elementary school by .. C. J. Good () Although this book looks like it would be for elementary school only, it really branches out. Some of the short lessons transcend all grades and are even valuable for adults. A must-buy for anyone looking for a fresh approach to goal setting with students of any age.
Title should be "Teaching Inside the Box" by .. Shane W. Early (Hong Kong, Hong Kong) Like the author I entered teaching later in life. I brought some of my insights in managing people and motivating people with me. It helped to an extent because in teacher training courses you get none of it.
The great thing about this book is the author actually gives examples and suggestions of what to do in real every day teaching situations. I teach outside the US and her ideas work fine. Kids are kids - no matter where you are.
Sharing her triumphs and failures she actually seems to have looked deeper into the classroom setting and adopted her teaching to fit. That is why I recommend a change of the title. The ideas she suggests are not new ideas - just good people skills.
I read Rafe Esquiths books and his come across a bit as "Look how good I am/was". This book is more of someone sharing and giving practical advice for you to use.
Any univeristy student about to enter student teaching should read this book.
A MUST Own by .. Bookity (MA United States) Thinking Outside the Box is hands down THE best teaching book I own (and I own a lot of theaching books). Johnson's straight-forward, friendly, yet pragmatic style make this an enjoyable and useful book. I plan on using all of the ideas that she has put forth. I will reread it as soon as I am finished! It's like having the best mentor spill all of her secrets. She also has helped me affirm my own teaching style. I am a young teacher and sometimes get the message that I'm too soft. Johnson's friendly yet in-charge teaching style is a refreshing change from the "Don't smile 'till Christmas" advice that I have received from other seasoned teachers. I normally don't write reviews but I had to recommend this book because it is so wonderful. A+
NEW TEACHER TOOL by .. ardnam (NJ) I had high hopes when I purchased this book but was sadly disappointed. It really is a good book for either new teachers or those who work in urban settings. I am not new to teaching nor do I teach in an urban area so I was not able to put my reading to good use. I think there is an abundance of great advice for those new to profession so I would recommend this highly to them. If you have taught for several years you probably already implement the recommendations in the book. While some of the book could be applied to any grade level, most of it is geared toward middle or high school. This also was contrary to my personal needs but may be quite useful to others. So, new teachers, urban teachers, and teachers of grades 6-12 will probably find this book rather useful. Others might want to keep looking for something else that targets their needs more directly.

Exellent resource for CNE Certification Exam by .. Margaret Sherman (Tennessee) I am currently studying for the NLN CNE certificaion exam. This book, Teaching in Nursing: A Guide for Faculty (Billings, Teaching in Nursing: A Guide for Faculty) was recommended as a resource and it has been very helpful in preparation for the exam. It is not only an excellent resource for the exam, but also an excellent resource for the novice nurse educator. For those of us in nursing education for a number of years, this book is excellent at refreshing us and providing new ideas and innovations in nursing. I hardily suggest this book to anyone in or seeking to begin educating nurses.

Product Description For courses in Inclusion/Mainstreaming or Introduction to Special Education. This successful and comprehensive, categorically-organized methods-based text examines how to teach all students with varying abilities in the same classroom. The Seventh Edition of Teaching Special Students in General Education Classrooms is uncompromising in its dedication to prepare educators to effectively teach the range of students found in the typical elementary or secondary classroom. Using a case-based approach, the text provides information about four groups of students with special needs: students with disabilities, gifted and talented learners, culturally and linguistically diverse individuals, and students at risk for school failure. In addition, it demonstrates the vast resources we now have available through technology, and presents practical strategies for adapting standard instruction to meet the learning needs of all students in general education classrooms. Furthermore, the reauthorization of IDEA is included, emphasizing for readers why this law is important and how it impacts educators and professionals. As the practice of inclusion expands, the challenges for teachers increase. Teaching Students in General Education Classrooms, 7th Edition is everything a future teacher needs to know in order to work effectively and sensitively within increasingly diverse elementary and secondary classrooms. Customer reviews Teaching Special Students in the General Education Classes by .. Estela Delgadillo (san Diego, CA) The book is pretty detailed and talks about many different laws that back up special students in education. It also talks about all the different types of special students that one ca n have in the general education classrooms. Overall I recommend this book if you have little or no knowledge of what is classified under Special students and how to go about helping them in their Education.
Excellent Service! by .. Yesenia Visoso (Gainesville, GA) The book I received was brand new at an excellent price and the delivery was surprisingly speedy! I would definitely recommend this seller!
Exceptional Service ! by .. CH (Flint, MI) The book arrived quickly and in perfect condition. I consider this book to be a good resource for new teachers.
I have no complaints.
Great but Incomplete by .. Ahmad Oueini (Beirut, Lebanon) I've been a faithful user of the Lewis & Doorlag book since its first edition. Each subsequent revision has added substance and useful information that makes buying it worthwhile. Of all the introductory texts on special education, this one is the most concise, reader-friendly, practical and up-to-date. It has invaluable teaching strategies and resources to inform the practice of special educators and diagnosticians. The only downside that is consistent across all editions is the unevenness of its content. In virtually every chapter about a given exceptionality, say mental retardation, more emphasis is placed on nature of the disability and teaching strategies than on its causes. Therefore, when using this book as a teaching tool in college, it has to be supplemented with other resources that do more justice to the etiology of each special need.
Informative and Easy-to-Read by .. Tania Duncan (Angwin, CA) I am a contract instructor who uses this book for an undergraduate level "Exceptional Children in the Classroom" class. I chose this text because it is practical and not as dry as Heward, another widely respected author of special education texts. Many strategies are provided for meeting the needs of students with disabilities as well as gifted students, those who are at risk, and those who are linguistically and culturally diverse.

Product Description This market-leading text has received wide acclaim for providing an applied, practical, and student-oriented approach to educational psychology. Psychology Applied to Teaching takes complex psychological theories and demonstrates how they apply to the everyday experiences of in-service teachers. The Twelfth Edition combines fresh concepts and contemporary research with long-standing theory and applications to create a textbook that addresses the needs of today's teachers and students. This new edition also reflects the Houghton Mifflin Education mission to help bridge the gap from preservice to practice. To that end, several of the program's features foster in students an appreciation of reflection. The first and last chapters discuss the concept and importance of reflective teaching; by providing Pause & Reflect and Journal Entry opportunities throughout the text prompt active reflection; and a new feature, Revealing & Challenging Assumptions, offers aspiring teachers opportunities to confront and reflect on problematic assumptions about teaching and learning. Faculty will find Web activities and a wide range of student activities in each chapter, including reviews, group, critical thinking and hands-on experiences. Customer reviews Teachers should know this. by .. CHRISTOPHER JAZINSKI (Mcallen, TX USA) The class is a joke. Teachers or upcoming teachers should already know these basics. This is why Education in America has gone to heck.
What You'd Expect... by .. Erik Johnson () This type of learning should not be taught with a traditional textbook, anyway. This particular one suffers from poor layout, way too many colors, and fonts that strain the eye.
Useless and stupid by .. Mike (NYC) This is a required text for a class I'm taking. It's a waste of money. What's sound (the basics on skinner, piaget, etc ad nauseum) is already in every other education textbook and the technology segments are dated, frequently wrong, and assume you are mentally retarded.
Does anyone really need to be told what a keyboard is? For 2 pages? Book also has a profound Microsoft bias and seems to openly deny that anything else exists.
Avoid, if possible.
Useless, outdated, and idiotic by .. S. Grunow (Fair Haven, NJ) I had to read this book for a Technology and Education class, and it was a total waste of time and money. I'm a professional computer consultant in the middle of a Masters in Education, so I feel qualified to discuss the technical aspects of this book.
While this book was Copyrighted in 2005, almost all the pictures and content are so dated I think that little has changed since the first edition. A Third edition has just been released, which may be more up to date, but I feel it will be just as useless.
The main problem with this book is that it covers everything with no regard to technical ability. For instance, the book informs the reader what a scanner is, and then says they can be usefull for converting a printed page to editable text on the computer. If you are learning what a scanner is for the firs time today, then you AREN'T ready to start using OCR to import documents. In other places, it says floppy disks (yes, the 3.5 disks) are useful for storing information (most computers don't even accept floppy disks).
Additionally, the book is entirely pro-microsoft. It briefly touches upon 'free' software as it distinguishes between shareware and freeware, but doesn't mention Free/Libre Open Source Software. Between Sakai, Open Office, Firefox, and the myriad of other programs, this is inconceivable. All the pictures are for Word, Outlook, and Internet Explorer. It also makes no mention of Apple Computers (at least I didn't find any) or GNU Linux/*BSD.
Finally, it is filled with cute buzzwords that mean nothing, at least to me, such as "The DID's formative feedback look ensures performance objective validity." which appeared on the sidebar with a lightbulb.
Basically, if you don't know anything about technology, this book will be of no use, as much of it will gloss over what you need to learn, and if you are already a competent computer user, this book will be dated and provide scattered information that might have been helpful 5 years ago.
I would recomend not buying this book. If you are a teacher and want to see how technology can be used in your classroom (without learning useless information like what a POST is) I'd try Will Richardson's Blogs, Wikis and Podcasts. That was useful and interesting, while not being too technical.

This book gives great, real-life examples of how you can handle discipline situations with pre-schoolers to high-schoolers. It also gives great ideas on preventing discipline issues to begin with. It's a must-read for any teacher!
Great approach to classroom discipline by .. K. Hunt (Florida, USA) This book was recommended to me by a colleague. "Teaching . . . " empowers you to make decisions that are best for you and your students. The recommendations by the authors show how being in a "thinking state" allows you to offer choices to help students make good decisions regarding their behavior. I have been frustrated and exhausted trying to devise consequences which are appropriate. This method puts it back in the student's lap to develop the appropriate behavior. Read it once to get the overall ideas, then read it again to further your understanding.

Useful Book by .. M. Herbert () I found the first few chapters of this book very useful for my teaching practice but I never finished it. The truth is it started to get too indirect with the illustrations - the paedagogical links were not clear. And generally the book slowed up as it progressed from easy reading to something else.

Product Description Research tells us that an inquiry approach to science teaching motivates and engages every type of student, helping them understand science's relevance to their lives, as well as the nature of science itself. Teaching Science as Inquiry demonstrates a manageable way for new and experienced teachers to bring inquiry successfully into the science classroom through a 2-part structure: Methods for Teaching Science as Inquiry and Activities for Teaching Science as Inquiry. The Methods portion scaffolds concepts and illustrates instructional models to help readers understand the inquiry approach to teaching. The Activities portion follows the 5-E model (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate), a Learning Cycle model introduced in the methods chapters that reflects the NSES Science as Inquiry Standards.
