Product Description Just when you thought the last thing the world needed was another book on weeknight cooking, along comes an entirely fresh take on the subject. As they do on their weekly show, host Lynne Rossetto Kasper and producer Sally Swift approach their topic with attitude and originality, making The Splendid Table’s How to Eat Supper one of the most engaging cookbooks of this or any other year. As loyal listeners know, Lynne and Sally share an unrelenting curiosity about everything to do with food. Their show, The Splendid Table, looks at the role food plays in our lives—inspiring us, making us laugh, nourishing us, and opening us up to the world around us. Now they have compiled all the most trenchant tips, never-fail recipes, and everyday culinary know-how from the program in How to Eat Supper, a kitchen companion unlike any other. This is no mere cookbook. Like the show, this book goes far beyond the recipe, introducing the people and stories that are shaping America’s changing sense of food. We don’t eat, shop, or cook as we used to. Our relationship with food has intensified, become more controversial, richer, more pleasurable, and sometimes more puzzling. How to Eat Supper gives voice to rarely heard perspectives on food—from the quirky to the political, from the grassroots to the scholarly, from the highbrow to the humble—and shows the essential role breaking bread together plays in our world. How to Eat Supper takes you through a plethora of inviting recipes simple enough to ensure success even if you’ve never cooked before. And if you are experienced in the kitchen, you’ll find challenging new concepts and dishes to spark your imagination. Customer reviews Cookbook by .. Barbara King () Great gift for the cook in your life who loves to learn new tricks and recipes. Lovely book.
Beautiful Book by .. Sharon L. Scheel (Tallahassee, FL) This was a gift for my daughter, she had heard it discussed on NPR's Splendid Table. I looked through it and was very impressed and now plan on buying one for myself.
Somewhat disappointing by .. K. E. Johnson (Salt Lake City, UT) I asked for this book after hearing Lynne and Sally discuss it on NPR. It sounded very appealing in that context, but I can't heartily recommend it. Here are the specific items that trouble me:
1. It's poorly indexed (and scantily indexed). Here is an example. There is a nice tip in the book regarding how to thaw frozen shrimp properly, while keeping and enhancing the flavor. I came across it while browsing, but when I went back to look for it again, it couldn't be found. Not listed under shrimp, the obvious place. Finally located it again by searching other entries for fish. When I am looking for information or a recipe, I go to the index first.... I don't have time to browse an entire book every time I want to cook something. Someone suggested I could just make notes, but that seems like a pain.
2. Many complete pages are taken up with large quotes printed in variably sized fonts, which is not what I am looking for in a cook book. Bartlett's Familiar Quotations will do for that. To me the effect is jarring, a bit like being shouted at, and it makes me wonder if they didn't quite have enough material to fill the book otherwise.
I have not tried the recipes yet. I do own "The Splendid Table", which is a wonderful book, rich with information, great illustrations, and a terrific index, so I don't really get why this book is so inferior in that respect. If you are thinking about buying it, I'd look it over in a store before purchase.
Too Busy to Read by .. Burgess McKellum (Raleigh, NC USA) The use of many different font sizes, styles, colors, boldface and italics on all a single page is enormously distracting. Why would any editor allow that? It's unnecessary clutter which I find, well, distasteful! I have such a hard time getting past the chaotic visuals on each page that I simply don't use the book.
Another superb book by Lynne Rossetto Kasper by .. James Means (Houston, TX United States) When I purchased Ms. Kasper's book, "The Splendid Table" over ten years ago, I knew immediately that it was going to be a classic. It is a clear, concise, beautifully written, homage to the amazing food of northern Italy. Not only were the recipes amazing, the text was fascinating and informative. The Splendid Table: Recipes from Emilia-Romagna, the Heartland of Northern Italian Food
Ms. Kasper and her radio show co-host have done it again. While not quite up to the lofty standards of her previous work, Ms. Kasper has nonetheless managed to write another fascinating and fun read. The recipes here are simple, straightforward, and they easily integrate into the lives of those of us who have crazy schedules.
Ms. Kasper and Ms. Swift offer fascinating tips and lore as well as recommendations on building your cookbook library.
My one quibble with the book is its design. The text can be a bit overwhelming because of a mixture of font sizes and types. It's a bit distracting.
This book is definitely a keeper. A superb choice for an everyday cookbook or as a gift for someone whose cooking skills are very basic. Outstanding.

Product Description Praised by everyone from Bernie Siegel to Daniel Goleman to Larry Dossey, Rachel Remen has a unique perspective on healing rooted in her background as a physician, a professor of medicine, a therapist, and a long-term survivor of chronic illness. In a deeply moving and down-to-earth collection of true stories, this prominent physician shows us life in all its power and mystery and reminds us that the things we cannot measure may be the things that ultimately sustain and enrich our lives. Customer reviews "Kitchen Table Wisdom" is a very comfortable title but hardly touches the depth of effect this book has had on me! by .. Emily Dickinson (Rogersville, TN USA) I heard Dr. Remen interviewed on NPR and knew I had to purchase the book. Her manner was so calm and full of wisdom. Although the book deals with life threatening illnesses and end of life issues for the patient and how medical caregivers respond, it was very healing to me
as a widow whose husband died of cancer. It was so gratifying to hear
how Dr. Remen, as a patient and a medical professional, has affected the process by which people in the medical field have returned to a more caring expression when dealing with patients.
Our family found that the caregivers, from volunteers, CNAs, Hemotology, Imaging & Respitory therapists, transportation people, Nurses to Doctors on the oncology ward of Welmont Holston Valley Hospital in Kingsport were all so caring to my husband and everyone of us!
Thank you, Dr. Remen for your work and this book. It is one I will keep in my library for rereading and recommend to many people. Good grief is hard work and your work is a great resource!

Naomi by .. Ingrid Ryst (Nevada, U.S.A.) I really enjoyed reading this book and was impressed with the positive attitude and hopeful outlook under very difficult circumstances.
Displeased by .. Cynthia () Kitchen Table Wisdom 10th Anniversary
I ordered 2 "New" Kitchen Table Wisdom books to be given as gifts. The cover of one of them was crooked and did not cover the first page. The book was simply not made right. I was not allowed to exchange it for another, just send it back and charged a bit to do that.
It turned out all right because I found out another way (not Amazon) to get books at discount and got the 2nd one right away.
Kitchen Table Wisdom by Rachel Naomi Remen by .. Ruth S. Palmer (Jasper, Ga United States) Although the title sounds simplistic, the contents of this book are
profound. It is a book of inspirational true stories, written by a most perceptive physician/counselor about the wisdom she has gleaned about life and death through her experiences with patients. Each chapter is a new story, and they open windows in our minds and hearts. One of the finest books I have read in years.
Wow!! by .. Able to breathe (Spring Valley, NY) This is one of the most incrediblely healing books you will ever read. You will find yourself refering to it and giving it to friends (like I did) because it is so theraputic. A must read if you are a self-aware person.

 Author : Augusten Burroughs Number of Pages : 256 Release Date : 2008-04-29 Publisher : St. Martin's Press List Price : $24.95 Amazon Price : $13.65 Used Price : $10.98 |
Product Description “As a little boy, I had a dream that my father had taken me to the woods where there was a dead body. He buried it and told me I must never tell. It was the only thing we’d ever done together as father and son, and I promised not to tell. But unlike most dreams, the memory of this one never left me. And sometimes…I wasn’t altogether sure about one thing: was it just a dream?” When Augusten Burroughs was small, his father was a shadowy presence in his life: a form on the stairs, a cough from the basement, a silent figure smoking a cigarette in the dark. As Augusten grew older, something sinister within his father began to unfurl. Something dark and secretive that could not be named. Betrayal after shocking betrayal ensued, and Augusten’s childhood was over. The kind of father he wanted didn’t exist for him. This father was distant, aloof, uninterested… And then the “games” began. With A Wolf at the Table, Augusten Burroughs makes a quantum leap into untapped emotional terrain: the radical pendulum swing between love and hate, the unspeakably terrifying relationship between father and son. Told with scorching honesty and penetrating insight, it is a story for anyone who has ever longed for unconditional love from a parent. Though harrowing and brutal, A Wolf at the Table will ultimately leave you buoyed with the profound joy of simply being alive. It’s a memoir of stunning psychological cruelty and the redemptive power of hope. Customer reviews When unhelpful is also wrongful by .. M. Mello (Brasil) I know I should post this as a comment to some of the reviewers, but I do think a bit of reflection on what constitutes a valid critic and what does not might help all of us Amazon buyers/readers.
I find it very disturbing and annoying to read so many negative critics on grounds such as: "this book lacks the wit of the others, by the same author", "he is repeating himself", "I was expecting some laughs" etc.
What this comments tell me is that there is a lot of people out there, that came to regard the literary creation the same way they regard their fast food consumption: as a producer-consumer relationship to be appraised by standards such as uniformity (the same burger, wherever you go), predictability (the same shopping/reading experience) etc. The author is, thus, transformed into a brand.
Sure, there are many authors, specially in America, that gladly adhere to this "contract" with their audiences, but this is certainly NOT something we should regard as a desirable norm for all authors. Revisiting the same material/subject many times; producing works of radically different tones/moods; amplifying the significance of personal experiences -- none of these are valid grounds for appraising, either positively or negatively, a literary work.
What would we say of Shakespeare's work if we adopted such criteria as measures of quality? Should he write only histories, and not comedies or tragedies? Should we condemn "King Lear", on the grounds that it is "too tragic" and lacks the wit of "The Merry Wives of Windsor"? Or that Lear was actually "exaggerating things"?
This is even more valid in the case of autobiographical works, such as Burroughs' book. It is entirely the author's prerogative to employ the tone that he feels inclined to, as well as the subject matter that he deems necessary to cover.
I am certainly not suggesting that Burroughs' work is as good as or as important as Shakespeare's. I'm not even saying it is good. But I do believe we would read much better, useful and intelligent reviews if we all used sensible criteria for our comments.
Good read by .. L. Nichols () If you love his books you will like this one as well. I did not find it as gripping as Running with Scissors, but it was definitely worth reading if you want a rather raw account of a boys life with an abusive father and a crazy mother.
wolf took a bite out of me by .. L. Huth () A Wolf At The Table: A Memoir Of My Father took a real bite out of me. I knew something of Augusten Burroughs' background so I was somewhat prepared but not totally ready for what was in the book. If you have a heart, it will be difficult to read all that Augusten and his mother experience. If you've been through anything like what they've been through, you'll certainly relate. Augusten's writing is superb, straight-forward, and will make you feel the absence.
The Bad Father by .. Jack M. Walter (Baltimore, MD) I read this book in two days because it was so harrowing and riveting. The author grew up in a household with a depressed mother and a cold, uncaring father who showed signs of being a psychopath. It's amazing that Burroughs survived with all of his intellgence and sanity intact. There may be some people who think that households like this do not exist, but they will have to think again. The more people that survive child abuse and speak out about it, the better. Burroughs has done a great service and has created beautiful, horrifying art at the same time. Highly recommended.
Ok, I admit. I'm a huge fan. by .. J. Seidel () I've read all his books and am fascinated by Augusten Burroughs' writing. This addition to his series of memoirs gives great insight into his relationship (or lack thereof) with his father.

Product Description The Periodic Table introduces budding chemists to the world of the elements as it's never been seen before. Designed to resemble popular networking Web sites, the pages of this book feature "homepages" for each of the chemical elements -- complete with witty and informative profiles written by the elements themselves, plus a personally chosen picture. Customer reviews Gift for my son by .. Michael Barnett () An excellent tool to relate relevant Chemistry informatoin to a younger audience. Highly recommended by this father/Chemistry Major
My son LOVES this book! by .. MommyTiger (Mesa, AZ) We checked this book out from my seven year old son's school library earlier this month and read it through in just a couple of days. He was thrilled with the descriptions of the elements and how some were radical and others mischievous and like to cause trouble. For days he continually wanted to talk about how the elements did this or that and was describing them back to me. He went on and on about how much he would like the book until I promised him that he would get at least one science book for Christmas. He got this one and another that is more text book styled.
The phrasing of the book is completely geared toward bringing the elements to life. The elements each have a cartoon character type of symbol and a description of its properties. There is also a poster in the back of the book which I will have laminated for him.
Every time I look at this book I wonder why nobody thought to make chemistry exciting when I was in school. If you want to encourage a curious mind to learn more about chemistry and the world around them, this book is a very good place to start. We are also getting the rest of the series.
FUN & EXCITING WAY TO INTRODUCE SCIENCE by .. St. Louis () This book is incredible and written in such a clever way that our son won't put it down. He carries it around the house and everytime he reads about a new element we hear a shout from the other room telling us its' special ability and use.
BONUS: There is a colorful tear-out periodic table poster in the back of this book!
Wonderful book!! by .. Chillin' Out () I bought this book for my 5-yr.-old son and it was a huge hit. He will look at it for a couple of days and then it's back on the shelf, but it regularly is pulled off again. He loves the little Pokemon-like characters and is getting tonnes of info (as am I) about the elements of the periodic table at the same time. He also makes it a point to tell everyone that there is chromium in our spoons which always catches them off guard :)
Adorable and truly informative by .. Luna Ville (Atlanta, GA) I bought this book for my eight year old daughter. My nine year old son hangs over her shoulder to read along. They will read two or three pages a day every day for a while, then, ignore it for a week or so. I'll think they've lost interest in it, but, nope, it will come out again after a rest. I think there is a chance that, unlike their mother, they will someday pass high school chemistry.

Product Description At age twenty-seven, Danny Meyer launched his groundbreaking Union Square Cafe—the first of his innovative and revered New York City institutions. Twenty-three years later, he is CEO of one of the world's most dynamic restaurant organizations. Now Danny shares the groundbreaking business philosophy that serves as the foundation for every success he has achieved: "the virtuous cycle of enlightened hospitality." By putting the power of hospitality to work in a new and counterintuitive way—applying it first and foremost to his employees, and then to guests, community, suppliers, and investors—Danny has consistently beaten the odds while setting the competitive bar in one of the toughest trades around. A landmark, bestselling business book and a fascinating behind-the-scenes history of the creation of Danny's most famous eating establishments, Setting the Table is a treasure trove of valuable, innovative insights applicable to any business or organization. Customer reviews Here are 10 Valuable Take-Aways from Setting the Table by .. J. Brown (Florida United States) Setting the Table by Danny Meyer provides lots of value for business leaders. I ranked this book five stars based on the value alone. The reader should be apprised that the book is written as a memoir of Mr. Meyer's experience in the restaurant business.
As a business leader you should study excellence in your industry and outside of your industry and there are numerous take-aways in Setting the Table that can be applied to any business. Here are ten excellent points I took away from Mr. Meyer's book.
1. The Excellence Reflex - "A natural reaction to fix something that isn't right, or to improve something that could be better." The excellent reflex is a natural reaction that some people have and cannot be taught. Meyer trains his leaders how hire those that have it.
2. Employees can be categorized as Overwhelmers, Whelmers, and Underwhelmers. It is easy to identify Underwhelmers and get rid of them. The most dangerous employees are the Whelmers because "they infuse an organization and its staff with mediocrity...and send a dangerous message to your staff and guests that "average" is acceptable."
3. Coaching is correcting with dignity.
4. You obtain valuable leadership skills while managing volunteers. It requires you to consistently motivate employees beyond their earnings.
5. Create a sense of "shared ownership" with your customers by taking an interest in them and making them feel important. They will view you as a partner instead of a provider.
6. ABCD - Always Be Collecting Dots. You should aggressively collect lots of little information about your customer (dots) as they interact with your product or service. Then make the connection between the dots as a mechanism to improve your product or service to all customers.
7. Customers may love your product or service but the relationship that they have with you or your employees is what builds loyalty. Therefore you should take every opportunity to exceed expectations to create a lasting relationship.
8. Enlightened Hospitality - "We would define our successes and our failures in terms of the degree to which we had championed, first, one another and then our guests, community, suppliers and investors." This is an extremely powerful concept and is rooted in the integrity theme Meyer has throughout the book. You can't expect employees that don't treat each other with respect, who can't be hospitable with one another to then turn around and treat the customer with respect and high levels of hospitality a customer deserves. Poor relationships internal to the organization migrate to poor relationships external to the organization. Ultimately being last on the list benefits the investor by long term organizational success.
9. Judge your staff on 51 percent emotional job performance and 49 percent technical job performance. You can always teach technical while emotional is much harder if not impossible to develop. Lack of emotional job performance skills destroys teams and alienates customers.
10. "The road to success is paved with mistakes well handled" and "the worst mistake is not to figure out some way to end up in a better place after having made a mistake."
The ten points above are obviously more powerful in the context of the book when illustrated with Mr. Meyer's stories and experiences.

An amazing book by .. Daniel J. Quinn (Connecticut) Danny Meyer is now one of my new heroes. I'm at a point where I will be opening a new restaurant in the coming year and I plan to buy a copy of Setting the Table for all of my employees and all of my investors. I can't wait to have the time to visit all his restaurants one by one. This book or cd should be required listening or reading for anyone going into the restaurant business. Thanks for stocking this amazing informative book.
All the best,
Danny Quinn
Beginning restaurateurs, this you must read by .. Umberto J. Fontana () The restaurant business begins with a vision well founded on food knowledge. Having had great and many good meals helps. But the lessons of this book are many: the best is his order of priorities....first the employees, then the customers, then the suppliers and last the investors. Brilliant.
THE book for anyone dealing with customers by .. wine Girl (Connecticut) One of the best business books I've ever read. Danny really "gets it" as far as treating his employees and customers like family and VERY important people. THIS is why he is so successful with the top restaurants in NYC. A MUST read for anyone in sales or who deals with customers and employees on a daily basis
Hospitality defined! by .. Juan (Austin, TX) A great book that describes how to create customers for life, with "enlightened hospitality", creating an outstanding customer experience, based on a dialog with the customer. As he puts it "picking up the rocks" (to find the info) and "connecting the dots", a process that could and should be copied for every business.
His passion for food comes across the written page, its contagious.
I'm not a wine drinker but his passion made me want to give it a try.
I never been to one of his restaurants but I now see a trip to New York to visit his restaurants.
Highly recommended not only for restaurateurs, but for every business that has contact with customers.

Customer reviews Great for Gift Giving! by .. Andrea R. (Big D) This is such a beautiful book. There are many wonderful recipes and decorating tips, but most importantly, the pages of this book serve to remind us that all of our bounty and blessings come from our Heavenly Father. This book makes a lovely conversation piece, but it is certainly meant to be used! I ordered 3 copies - one for myself and the other 2 for my sisters. We are all so pleased!
Coffeetable cookbook by .. Robert L. Koch () I saw this book at a friends house and loved it. we tried to find it at the store she bought it at, but they were sold out. So I looked it up on Amazon.com and found it for the same reduced price as the warehouse store was selling it. I want to give it as Christmas gifts, so I bought several.
I am extremely happy with the books and the great service I received from Amazon.com !
PRAISE & WORSHIP IN THE KITCHEN! by .. Percy Williams (New York City) This is a cookbook unlike any other! Yes, every cookbook, by definition, must include its share of original, tantalizing and scrumptious recipes, but here, Benita Long has taken things a glorious step further.
Come To The Table introduces you to great step by step recipes along with inspiring scripture from the Holy Bible, Ms. Long's commentaries and a grand selection of heartwarming, though provoking quotations from various individuals including, Rachel Carson, Robert Louis Stevenson and William Wordsworth. Mr. Sammy Anderson is the photographer for this book and his expertise literally makes this volume a living, breathing work of art, so enjoyable to read. I almost feel as though I should carry this book with me to Sunday morning worship.
As your fingers glide through this book and your mind absorbs its contents, you too will find the subtitle fitting, for it is indeed about: "Food, Fellowship, and a Celebration of God's Bounty." Prior to being captured by its recipes, you are cordially greeted by what Ms. Long calls: "An Invitation, A Welcome, and A Challenge" and from that point on, any cook, or aspiring Chef (like myself), will find each recipe relatively easy to execute. Every chapter is accompanied with scripture and no recipe is permitted to close without an enlightening quote, commentary or scripture.
I own and have read many a cookbook, but until now, have not come across a more beautiful and inviting work. I applaud Benita Long and her staff for creating and presenting such a special cookbook; for me it's more than a cookbook; it's my daily devotional in the kitchen.
A Wonderful Surprise! by .. Mark D. Roberts (Boerne, TX USA) Confession: I almost never like this sort of book. Usually books like this are, well, way too kitschy and cute and sugary-sweet for my tastes. But Come to the Table is a wonderful surprise! The layout and photos are elegant. The recipes are truly inviting. The Christian touches (Bible verses, quotations, etc.) are well-done and very appropriate. This is a fine book. I'm planning on giving several of these as Christmas presents. Oh, I forgot to mention that this book is priced very reasonably for the quality of the photos and printing.
A Superb and Spiritually Enriching Choice for Gift Giving by .. David Crumm (Canton, Michigan) My 30 years in journalism include a number of years of food writing and restaurant reviewing for the Detroit Free Press and Knight-Ridder newspapers. Anyone involved in the front lines of food writing knows that, whatever else you present: It's about the recipes, the recipes, the recipes.
So, first and foremost, this is a yummy collection of heart-warming recipes and those terms "yummy" and "heart-warming" characterize nicely the array of foods you'll discover in this gorgeous book: Personally I'm drawn to the very simple version here of Tomato Gruyere Pie, the down-home Creamed Chicken on Cornbread, the easy yet elegant Grilled Asparagus with Blue Cheese, and that Glazed Salmon with Orange Salsa -- mmmm mmmm.
How about you? Hungry yet?
What's unusual about the design of this book is that these generally simplified recipes for foods that are likely to become family favorites are packaged in a large-format hardback book with inspiring photographs and reminders of sacred texts from the Bible -- as well as uplifting words from other sages and literary lights.
In other words, this book earns an "A" for the recipes themselves. But it's really intended as an inspirational invitation to cooking and to gathering a household around you to enjoy these foods, not only for their great taste but also because the very act of cooking and eating together becomes a spiritual oasis.
The biblical texts come from the Hebrew scriptures as well as the New Testament. This is a Thomas Nelson book, so there really isn't an interfaith diversity of sacred texts here. This is primarily a book aimed at Christian readers. Nevertheless, the words of sacred wisdom do come from various sources and the basic spiritual principle of meals as a spiritual resource is universal.
Many people will enjoy owning the book or giving it as a gift. Even if you don't have a large household yourself, I can envision many of these fairly easy yet delightful recipes to wind up as mainstays at gatherings of friends, potlucks and other shared meals.

A must for a healthier life in Him by .. Need2Read (St. Louis, MO USA) This study has taken me on a journey into understanding what the bible says about how to eat and how to live in a way that glorifies God. It teaches the importance of studying His word for help, strength and guidance as well as other aspects like having proper accountability. It's so easy to overcome overeating and other bad eating habits when you begin to change your focus from food to God. "Feast on the Lord" it teaches. Well, I say, "Praise the Lord for this study and the people who created it!" Seriously, this study has made a complete change in my life and I now face a healthier future because of it!
The best program for weight loss by .. Elaine H. Bandy (Neenah, Wi United States) This has been a very positive experience. It is more than a weight loss program. It is a spiritual growth developer. Weight loss happens as you grow closer to the Lord. It is wonderful. I plan to stay on it the rest of my life. I have lost 22 pounds but have a greater realization of approach to food.
Freedom within your reach by .. J. Lighty (Indiana) This workbook is awesome. It truly shows the biblical reasons for confessing our sin of overeating.
It has been a great help to me in my life!
NOT a "my-way-or-the-highway" eating plan! by .. A. Galbraith (Wisconsin, USA) I'm having a difficult time understanding a previous reviewer's comment that Mike Cleveland teaches in this book that his eating plan is the only acceptable approach (vs. Atkins, etc.). The following is a direct quote from The Lord's Table online course:
"Welcome to The Lord's Table! This course is a 60-Day program to help you gain control of your eating habits and to lose weight, if needed. Here is a suggested eating schedule to help you get up and running. The suggested eating days are like training wheels on a bike. Eventually you'll outgrow them, but they're helpful to get you started and you will feel more secure having them guide you. In The Lord's Table, this eating schedule is offered as a guide, not a requirement. Eventually you will develop your own schedule of eating that honors the Lord and produces weight loss or maintains optimum weight."
Doesn't exactly sound like he's saying his way is the only acceptable way to me - does it to you?
I find it frustrating that someone would not only misrepresent this author's teaching, but would cast aspersions on Mr. Cleveland's character as well. He "likes to toot his own horn" because he (supposedly) asked some who have been successful with breaking food's grip on their lives to come to this Amazon site and write a review? Sounds like getting the word out to me.
This is a wonderful program, with spot-on encouragement and firmly grounded Biblical teaching for those of us who find food has far too great a place in our lives. I highly recommend it.

The Comfort Table is a warm, comfortable(!) cookbook! by .. Sharon L. Forbes (Palatka, FL) When I recieved my copy of The Comfort Table by Katie Lee Joel, I knew that I was going to thoroughly enjoy it, and I have! It is a beautiful book, very well written, I feel as though I am sitting right next to Katie as she tells her stories. I haven't had a chance to try out any of the recipes yet, but am anxious to soon. I know this is a cookbook I will enjoy for many years to come.
Great recipes by .. A. Wilber (Long Island, NY) I read this book, not sure if I would like it since it was written by Billy Joel's wife, and thinking it might not be so good since she is from a famous family and that is how she got her recipes published, but I was happily proven wrong. The recipes are great and delicious.
I especially liked the recipe for Buttermilk Pancakes with Caramelized Bananas, talk about comfort food on a cold winter morning, yum! The cookbook is full of yummy recipes that everyone likes, such as Hot Spinach and Artichoke Dip and Deviled Eggs. Each recipe the author writes a little history behind the recipe which I enjoyed. I also love the photos throughout the book especially of Katie's wedding photo with the Wedding Biscotti recipe. What a great recipe for a wedding or special occasion. It is great to have such a great cook here on Long Island. Bravo!
I LOVE THIS COOKBOOK by .. C. Yarborough (SC) I read about this cookbook in a Cosmo Magazine. It had a few recipes included in the article, all of which looked yummy. I told my sister about it and we found it on Amazon for a third of the price that it is in the store! We ordered 3 - one for all three sisters. When they finally came, we made the Spinach Artichoke dip that night. The next morning we made the Nutty Banana Bread. Soooo Delicious! The best thing is, most of the recipes I actually want and am able to make... and I can't cook at all! I love this cookbook so much, I ended up ordering this same cookbook for my Dad for Christmas!
Great purchase!!! by .. W. McLendon () This book came in great packaging and was well protected from the damages of the mail system. It appears to be brand new with absolutely NO signs of use! The price was great therefore I enjoyed a savings from the regular price at a local book store! My daughter requested this for Christmast so I'm happy to be able to give it to her! Thanks for another great Amazon experience! Another happy customer!

Bug Dr. (Elmhurst Il.) Although the recipes take time and concentration the effort is rewarded with supurb eating. Entertaining with this cookbook is enjoyable not only for the guests but also the cook. This has a permanent spot in the cookbook library. It is interesting to see how many of my friends also keep The Splendid Table in the front of their libraries. {Often stained with sauce}.
One of the Best Italian Cookbooks Ever! by .. R. Rodgers (New York, NY) Before there was a food show available every minute of the day on TV, passionate American cooks learned how to cook at their local cooking school. For many years, before her popular NPR radio show (also called The Splendid Table) went on the air, Lynne Rosetto Kasper was one of the most beloved teachers on the circuit. I saw her teach many times, and I still use her tips and recipes. (For example, soak raw onion slices in a little vinegar or water to remove their sharpness in salads.) This book was published in 1992, so it didn't benefit from online bookstore sales, and the fact that few people have reviewed it shows how it got lost in the shuffle. If you are a fan of Giada and Mario, make room in your bookshelf for Lynne, who really raised the bar for Italian cooking in this country. These are not fast-and-easy recipes, only incredible dishes with depth of flavor that you rarely see anymore in cookbooks. I have fond memories of the Jam Tart, the vinaigrette with sauteed shallots and garlic, and the long-simmered ragu. It is one of the very few books that has won both IACP and James Beard awards for Cookbook of the Year (akin to winning the Oscar and the Golden Globe for Best Picture). Three words: Buy This Book.
Try the Tortellini Recipe by .. Elio D. Querze III (Boston, MA United States) This book is the real deal! Truly authentic. Just like my Nonis cooking. Try the tortellini recpie and cookem in Chicken broth, en brodo! You will die and go to food heaven!
One of THE best cookbooks by .. Chris L. (Atlanta, GA) I'm surpised no one has reviewed this book yet. A winner of prestigous book awards, I say without question that this is my favorite cookbook. (Julia Child's The Way to Cook comes in a close second)..I was working in a high-end Italian restaurant in San Franciso that also sold fresh food, Italian wines, and great cookbooks. The author was there to prepare dishes from this book, so I got to meet her, taste her food, and got a signed copy. Not only was she nice, she really knows how to cook. The food is from Reggio-Emilia, in the center of Italy, and the true home of Prosciutto, Bologna, Pamigiano Reggiano, Balsamic vinegar (the REAL balsamic vinegar) among other fantastic food. The recipes are comprehensive, very well written, and authentic. She gives background and hints, and the book is very educational and interesting just to read. She even tells you step by step how to make real pasta, and find ingredients. I've made many recipes and they are all so good. This is a book where I would make something for a dinner party without testing it beforehand; that is how much I trust it. Worth every penny!
Totally pleasurable! by .. Joyce Denn () I love cookbooks, and I love to cook. I have an extensive library of cookbooks, and this one is absolutely one of the best. The instructions are clear, the food is exquisite, and, above all, this book is a pleasure to read. I love learning the history of the recipes, the anecdotes add to the enjoyment. This is by no means a basic cookbook, it is definitely for the cook who goes beyond the basics, and many of the recipes require a long list of ingredients and lots of time. The results, however, are well worth the effort, and, for those who enjoy cooking, this book is a must.

 Format : Illustrated Author : Kelly Mehler Edition : 2nd ed. Number of Pages : 208 Release Date : 2003-01-15 Publisher : Taunton List Price : $19.95 Amazon Price : $9.10 Used Price : $8.79 |
Product Description The table saw is the cornerstone of any woodworking shop, and this book in its first edition quickly became the standard reference. Written by the recognized authority on the subject, the book explains how to choose the proper saw and use it safely, and covers all basic operations including ripping, crosscutting, and handling large stock. Included are discussions of innovations in table saw design and new accessories. With almost 300 color photos, this totally revised version of The Table Saw Book is the top reference on the subject. Customer reviews Fine Book, but by .. David C. Delany () The Table Saw Book provides plenty of information. The organization is fine, and I am not disappointed. Compared with other shop literature, however, Kelly Mehler fails to make the reading compelling -- or even very interesting. This book is more like a dull lecture.
Disappointing and elitist by .. S. Vest (Michigan, USA) I found this book very disappointing. As others have pointed out he's very dismissive of anything other than top of the line equipment and he's nearly obsessed with "European" saws. I feel certain that many people buying this book are like me and have already purchased a mid-level "American" saw. It really doesn't help me to tell me over and over that I've wasted my money on a piece of garbage and then sing the praises of expensive equipment I can't afford. I really get the idea that he feels that if you can't afford a $3000 saw using $200 blades and a thousand dollars worth of dust removal equipment you're just throwing your money away. This teaches me nothing about how to make the best use of what I have.
I was also put off by his dismissal of working with plywood and would have liked some more examples helpful to those of us who aren't master carpenters working with unlimited funds.
I guess I should have saved my money (and taken out a second mortgage) for a better saw instead of getting this book.
Table Saw Book by .. Richard L. Lachance (Cocagne, NB Canada) While the box covers the basics of a table saw, I was expecting a broader section on the design of jigs for use with a table saw. The jigs provided, however, are the basic ones commonly used.
Ups and Downs by .. Rusty Flewelling (Hemlock, MI USA) After reading all of the positive reviews, I was a bit disappointed after securing my copy of Mehler's Table Saw Book. Maybe my expectations were a little high, but I was left wanting more. I was hoping for something similar to Hylton's Woodworking with the Router.
The first two chapters (Introduction to and Buying a Table Saw) can be completely skipped by anybody who already owns or is familiar with a table saw. I felt Mehler spent WAY too much time touting European saws. These pages would've been much more useful on topics more relevant to most of us. I also wasn't particularly impressed with the Crosscutting chapter.
On the bright side, the book does contain some valuable information. The chapter on Safety is excellent. Mehler also consists of some good tips on maintaining your table saw. I liked the chapter on cutting various joints. Lastly, the book includes very good color photos and black-and-white diagrams.
Pros: Cheap, good newbie information, alignment and maintenance tips
Cons: Too much pre-buying info, infatuation with Euro saws
Recommendation: If new to table saws, this book is great. However, for experienced woodworkers, I'd look elsewhere.
Getting Started.... by .. Bosco Bob (Portland, Or.) The Table Saw Book was a great book to read as I began to get into doing some basic woodworking. It was extremely clear and an easy read. However, I found the information very good and on a level that I could understand. I would recommend to anyone who is just getting started in woodworking to read this book first. You will find that you refer back to it time and again.
