Great Bible, however... 5 by .. R. Farmer (USA)
This is, without question, a great Bible. However, I have two issues, one relates to personal pronouns used for members of the Godhead, and the second one is relative to my copy of this Bible which I purchased from Amazon.

Call me quirky, but I prefer to have personal pronouns which refer to members of the Godhead capitalized. The ESV does not do this.

The second issue relates to some type of printing error on about three pages: two in Galatians and one in Ephesians. The text on the binding side of the pages printed in such a way that it appears blurry--as if it were printed over twice. For the main text this is not such a big deal. But, the very small text of the cross-references, and to a lesser degree the text of the study notes, is very difficult to read due to being blurry. This problem is somewhat negated by using a magnifying glass. It's not really a big deal, but I thought that I would mention it.

Well Pleased 5 by .. R. Mccurdy (Corona, CA)
The ESV Study Bible meets advertized statements. It is packed with background information and comments on many texts. The online web access is especially helpful to computer students. Even if one doesn't prefer the ESV text, it still is a very helpful study Bible.

ESV Study Bible 5 by .. Cali ()
I learned about the ESV Study Bible from our church. If you want to really learn God's Word, this is a great tool! Excellent commentaries included, along with more maps, charts and relevent information to help you understand God's Word and His message to His children. I believe you will enjoy it! :-) Great price on Amazon and delivery right to my door in awesome time.

OUTSTANDING STUDY BIBLE!! 5 by .. John Wolf (San Francisco Bay Area, CA)
This Bible has it all! Color Maps, charts, good study notes, detailed outlines, a handy concordance, cross refs, timelines, a mini Biblical Doctrine Overview (not a exhaustive systematic theology textbook), a mini guide to major religions and cults in the back, history of salvation in the OT verse guide in the back, and so so much more!! This is the most outstanding Bible I have ever used!

I previously owned the Reformation Study Bible but was not impressed with the study notes, and other helps in the book, so hopefully someone will buy that one. I also own a Zondervan NIV Study Bible which is quite nice and was previously the most advanced study Bible I had used.

My only gripe(s) about this Bible are as follows.

1. Text is in 1 column instead of the traditional 2 column format for Bibles.
2. Words of Christ are not in Red
3. Size

None of these gripes are enough to deduct a star, just hopefully CrossWay will also release a condensed ESV Study Bible and leave the rest of the stuff online, or for those wishing the bigger study Bible. The words of Christ NOT in red will take some time getting used too, but hence the advantage is that no one can read the Bible and argue that only Christs words are inspired.

many thanks 5 by .. Jannette Thomas ()
Bought this Bible for my niece knowing she was wanting to buy one herself. She was so thrilled, thank you so much.

Product Description

The landmark general reference Bible that offers the full text of the New Revised Standard Version, now completely revised and updated by leading biblical scholars, including, new introductions and notes, diagrams, charts and maps––25% revised or new material.

After 10 years of new archeological discoveries and changes in biblical studies, it was time for an overhaul of this classic reference work.

With the guidance of the Society of Biblical Literature, an organization of the best biblical scholars world wide, we have selected Dean of Yale Divinity School, Harold Attridge, to oversee the Study Bible's updating and revision.

• The fundamental strengths of the first HCSB remain . . .

up–to–date introductions to the Biblical books, based on the latest critical scholarship, by leading experts in the field

concise notes, clearly explaining names, dates, places, obscure terms, and other difficulties in reading the Biblical text

careful analysis of the structure of Biblical books

abundant maps, tables, and charts to enable the reader to understand the context of the Bible, and to see the relationship among its parts.

• But, in this new revised edition . . .

Every introduction, essay, map, illustration and explanatory note has been reviewed and updated, and new material added. For instance,

There are newly commissioned introductory essays on

the archaeology of ancient Israel and the New Testament world,

the religion of ancient Israel,

the social and historical context of each book of the Bible, and

on Biblical interpretation

There are completely new introductions and notes for many of the books in the Bible, plus a full revision and updating of all others.

Of special interest are:

The literary history of the Pentateuch (those books between the Old and New Testament that Catholics include in their Bible)

More references to ancient non–Biblical sources which seem to parallel books in the Bible like the Gnostic gospels uncovered in Egypt or the famous scrolls found near the Dead Sea in Israel.

And, more comprehensive attention to the interrelationship of Old and New Testaments

'Tis a puzzlement ... 1 by .. Night Owl Scholar (New England (USA))
It seems unlikely that a truly scholarly book would mention "the Pentateuch (those books between the Old and New Testament that Catholics include in their Bible)" on its back cover (as well as in their editorial review). One hardly knows where to start in commenting on this reference. There is the obvious mistake that they are apparently referring not to the Pentateuch, but to the Apocryphal/ Deuterocanonical books (which, btw, are revered not only by Roman Catholics, but also Eastern Orthodox Christians). These books are also studied by all sorts of students of the Bible who want to gain a better understanding of the Hebrew culture in the years shortly before Jesus' birth. In addition, the tone of the given statement seems to assume a divisive "Us vs. Them" approach to our Roman Catholic (and Eastern Orthodox) sisters and brothers. Such divisiveness runs contrary to the scriptural assertion that we are all one body in Christ--which some parts of the body seem to have trouble grasping. If this is really on the back cover (and not a glitch in Amazon.com's mega-dataprocessing dept.), then I would steer clear of such a seemingly biased editorial viewpoint. If the HCSB did not make the above assertion, but the fault lies elsewhere, then I would take another look at the HCSB.

Great Product 5 by .. T. Bauza ()
My product arrived in excellent condition. The only problem I had is that it took almost two weeks. I did not read where it stated that it would take more that 3 days to receive the product.

The best bible I have ever used 5 by .. J. Shepard (Southwest Virginia, Virginia)
I had to buy this particular bible for a class I took and I fell in love with it. It is incredibly informative, the footnotes are excellent, and the new revised version of the text makes so much more sense! It is fantastic! This has even become the bible I use for my personal, religious use as well. It's brilliant and so much more than the New Oxford Annotated, which I've also had to buy for classes. The only problem I've ever had with it is the cover. Because I use it daily and it gets rustled around in my bookbag so often, I've basically mangled the cover. I recently laminated the covers which seemed to help a lot, but intend to buy the leather bound version when I finally tear this one apart. I would, hands down, recommend this Bible to everyone.

A trustworthy purchase! 5 by .. Sue S ()
The book was well-priced and in excellent condition! I got it in a reasonable time frame and would recommend the seller to anyone!

A Bible for Study 4 by .. Amos Lassen (Little Rock, Arkansas)
ttride, Harold W. "The HarperCollins Study Bible: Fully Revised and Updated", Harper One, 2006.

A Bible For Study

Amos Lassen

I am sure to be asked, "Why another Bible"? It's a good question especially if you are interested in the Bible for study. "The HarperCollins Study Bible" is just what you need. It has long been a wonderful reference Bible and it includes the New Revised Standard Version, even more revised than before by leading Biblical scholars, new introductions and notes, maps and charts, diagrams and about 25% new material. New Bibles seem to appear daily but as for study this is the one to beat. It comes with a concordance and articles that explain strategies for reading Bible, the religion of the Israelites, the Greco-Roman context of the New Testament, the Bible and archeology and archeology and the New Testament. The introductions to the separate books have been revised and the language of discourse is written in a way that is easy to understand.
This has been the accepted text for study in many classrooms and the text is excellent. The new revised edition has a great deal of information; so much so that the pages look cramped but the text and the notes are excellent.

Awesome tool of God 5 by .. Susan V. Wilson (right now Washington state)
I purchased the Archaeological Study Bible: An illustrated Walk Through Biblical History and Culture. I have looked long and hard for the study bible that spoke to my heart. I have found it in this bible. A great buy.

Good information but very hard to read. 4 by .. Eugene A. Milam ()
Archaeological Study Bible: An Illustrated Walk Through Biblical History and CultureThis study Bible offers a good background study of the culture and historical locations. A good addition to my library. However, the print is so small that I have to use a magnifying glass to read it and that is annoying. Assuming it was published in large print, that would definitely the way to go.

Re-ignite your Bible Study! 5 by .. Dan Seidman (SalesAutopsy.com)
This contains, BY FAR, the most fascinating supplemental content you can find in a Bible.

Cultural context, historical data, ancient customs and more - all blended in throughout the Word.

This will get you fired up again about learning what Moses & Jesus and others were really experiencing in their walk on this planet.

Well worth owning!

Archeological Bible 5 by .. J. Neighbors ()
This bible is a wonderful reference for use in the study of the scripture. My study group just finished a 3 month analysis of the Book of Acts in the new testament. This book gives a broad view of relevant history and information on the people of that time as well as the writer and subjects of the text. There is also helpful commentary on each verse and there are extensive cross-references to passages in both the old and new testaments.

One negative is the small print size which is necessary to accommodate the vast amount of data. Even with the small print, the book is large and heavy making it more useful in one's library than as a "take it with you" book.

I Took This Massive Tome to Israel.... 5 by .. The JuRK (Our Vast, Cultural Desert)
...and I'm glad I did! Yes, it was heavy and weighed down my backpack like you wouldn't believe, but it was so awesome to arrive at some place in Israel (or Jordan, also on the tour), gather round the pastor/guide, then open the book to a specific passage...and see a photo and special notes about that very place.

There is an incredible amount of information here. Yes, the study of archaeology changes rapidly but what's in this Bible will keep you busy for a lifetime! As far as the small print goes: get some reading glasses or a magnifying glass and some good light. It'll be worth it.

The person who makes it through this Bible should get a degree by the time they finish it, but the broad education and personal enlightenment should be enough.

(On a personal note: if you ever get the chance to visit Israel, DO IT. I've been there twice in the past year and I felt safe and secure both entire time. Once with a secular cruise, the other with a church group for 2 weeks. I even wandered off alone in Jerusalem and explored the ancient city on my own. The streets and markets are certainly crowded--with other pilgrims like yourself from all over the world! Jordan was very open and friendly as well. A trip there will stay with you forever. And it's so cool to be able to see something--like the cover photo--and be able to say, "Ah, that's Ephesus in Turkey." As far as taking this heavy monster of a Bible with you...that's up to you).

This Item is Helpful in Bible Studies 5 by .. Mary A. Mcadory (Philadelphia, Ms.)

My Sunday School Teacher had a Bible like this and when she shared some things from this Bible, I knew that I wanted to own one. I went home and found it on Ebay. It is very Helpful in my Bible readings, especially as far as Timeline.

I am enjoying it and find it so informative.

Mary Ann McAdory

A Great Resource 5 by .. Bryan Sims ()
When I was in college, my Con Law professor told us to always remember historical context when reading supreme court decisions. Since then, I have never failed to take that advice. Since then, I have come to believe that placing events in historical context is quite valuable for understanding them and the point that is being made.

The Chronological Study Bible helps put those historical contexts in perspective by arranging the Bible (to the extent possible) in chronological order. This means that books are not necessarily kept together, but instead that portions are arranged with portions from other books. Similarly, a book such as Jeremiah has been reordered to be chronological rather than its current arrangement.

This book comes with some excellent explanatory notes that explain the choices made by the arrangers. I am sure that Biblical scholars can endlessly debate how to chronologically arrange certain elements of the Bible. However, the notes explain the different options available for placement and why one option was chose over the others.

In addition, the Bible also contains large numbers of sidebars that detail information about topics such as agriculture, architecture, culture, society, daily life & customs, family, and politics. Also included are some great photographs of relevant locations, timelines that help put historical events in context, and a variety of maps to place things in a geographical context.

The book is beautiful, with full color pictures and illustrations throughout. Additionally, color is used to make the pages attractive and easy to read. Most importantly, however, the tops corners of the pages are color coded to allow easy access to each of the nine epochs into which the book is divided.

This book is well put together and would be an invaluable aid to anyone in their Biblical studies. I found the information included in the various sidebars to be quite informative and believe that they do an excellent job of providing additional information to help place the various passages in a greater context of the time period involved.

The only quibble that I have with the book is that the scripture index is found only in the back of the book. Every Bible I have ever seen includes a table of contents at the front that tells you where to find the various books of the Bible. I understand that this Bible is quite different in that it is chronological. However, I think it would be nice to have the index that was at the back, also included at the front.

On the whole, however, if have any interest in Biblical studies at all, I would highly recommend this book to you.

A study Bible 4 by .. Mark Weber (Avilla, IN United States)
This is a fine study Bible and very informative. The only drawback is in the study helps. Some of the authors come across as not believing the Bible is the inspired word of God. Some helps come across like they take a liberal view that the Old Testament is just a history of the Hebrews establishing a nation and taking hints from surrounding nations as to their need of establishing a national identity (Ruth, Jonah, and Ester are fairy tales). It is colorful and interesting. Easy to read.

Excellent resource for supplemental bible study and reading 5 by .. Laurence T. Baxter (Indiana USA)
The Chronological Study Bible (New King James Version) by Thomas Nelson Publishers is an outstanding resource for those who want to explore the bible in a fresh and novel way. A chronological bible arranges chapters and passages of the bible in chronological order (rather than canonical order), which at times presents quite a challenge for the authors. This particular chronological bible does a very good job at arranging the bible in historical order and in providing a great wealth of supplemental material about the historical and cultural contexts. It earns the title of a study bible due to a variety of notes, charts, pictures, and maps. While it does not replace a traditional bible or study bible (e.g. one with extensive cross-references and grammatical notes), it provides an excellent supplement for the reader who wishes to better see the dynamic landscape of scripture from creation to the end times.

The materials is nicely arranged, starting with a number of introductory notes about the chronology and about the NKJV, then the text itself is broken down into nine epochs: Before the Patriarchs, Time of the Patriarchs, Rise of a Unified People, From Tribes to a Nation, The Fall of Two Nations, Exile and Return, Between the Two Testaments, The Coming of the Messiah, and The Church Age. At the end are several nice articles on historical and cultural topics, a generous concordance, and a (very important) index of scripture passages which is needed to find where a given verse is located in the book.

The quality of the book and of the notes is really quite good. The format of short articles with relevant historical and cultural info right alongside the biblical text is not only useful, but highly engaging. At each point where there is a change of book or other break in the narrative, the study bible has a "Transition" section that I found very helpful in keeping the narrative flowing, as well as in alerting the reader that they're entering a new book of the bible. That sounds trivial for a regular bible but it's important for a chronological ordering which might go back and forth between two or more books of the bible. It was particularly interesting to read through New Testament books and missionary journeys via the interspersing of chapters of Acts along with Galatians, James, Thessalonians and others.

For in-depth understanding of the meaning of the text and for discipleship bible study there are better tools available, but this book serves its purpose well in helping us understand the historical flow of the events of scripture, and in given us a better understanding of the cultural background present in the lives of biblical characters. As supplemental study material, or for those looking to read through the bible in a year, this NKJV Chronological Study Bible is an excellent and enjoyable resource.

An Exceptionally useful guide to understanding the Bible 5 by .. Aimee M. Petrucci (Ankara, Turkey)
This study bible is amazing. The Bible alone is tough to understand and therefore impossible to apply to everyday life. For those new to Chritianity it is an invaluable tool in understanding God's word, his promises, and the teachings of Jesus Christ and his Apostles. I would highly recommend this book to both people new in the faith and those more mature. It contains profiles and in depth descriptions of the main characters throughout the Old and New Testaments and suggests ways in which to apply what you learn to your everyday life. It explains key concepts clearly and precisely.

Hard Back, No Index 2 by .. Reda Underwood (Sherwood, AR USA)
Read the description carefully! I would have preferred the version with an index. Also, this is not the leatherbound edition.
The study outline and footnotes are incredibly detailed and informative. Perfect for long term study! Still prefer leatherbound and indexed version!

Easy to understand 5 by .. San Diego Reader (San Diego, CA)
Reading this Bible makes it so much easier to understand. The explanations are very helpful. I highly recommend this book to everyone. I bought this for myself and since then, have bought several more to give as gifts to friends.

Defend your faith 4 by .. Lillian ()
The Apologetics Study Bible: Understand Why You Believe by Chuck Colson is a book that defends the divine origin and authority of Christianity. The book is interesting because it places one-hundred articles throughout the book about faith which I think adds weight to the rest of the book. It's a good education about ones faith that I think everyone could use.
There is a beautiful new book about God and faith entitled "The Enlightenment, What God Told Me After One Million Prayers: A Message for Everyone," by John H. Eagan. I just finished it. It's really great and deals with God, the creator, Jesus' teachings, and His Passion. It brought me to tears. I think the readers of Colson's book will really enjoy The Enlightenment.

My Favorite Bible 5 by .. Joel Gillin ()
The Apologetics Study Bible is a great tool for new Christians or any Christian who wants a deeper intellectual understanding to ground their faith. With articles from the world's top scholars, philosophers, and professors, this Bible has a wide range of resources for people who want to know they are grounding their faith in reason and not simply taking a leap. Worth much more than the price.

Knowing Your Faith 5 by .. Charles L. Smith (Gainesville, Fl USA)
This Bible give concise answers for knowing how to answer those who question my faith. I have really enjoyed the Holman translation.

Apologetics Study Bible a misnomer 1 by .. K. R. McDonald (Greer, SC, USA)
My biggest qualm with this so-called Apologetics Study Bible is that, as far as I can tell, most of the issues they address are not really apologetic matters. They are doctrinal matters. Why does this make a difference? It makes a difference because the way we treat doctrine, which is the particulars of the faith, should be different than apologetics, which is a defense of the faith. Obviously, the two matters are related. A faith built on strong doctrine is more easily defendable.

The problem comes from confusing a legitimate question or interpretation from the inside with an attack from the outside. Christians with different doctrinal stances aren't trying to bring down the faith; if anything, they are trying to make it more coherent. Sometimes this has disastrous results. The problem comes when the writers of this book dedicate nearly a page and a half to refuting Open Theism, which I believe is a legitimate interpretation of scripture. Whether it is right or wrong or even orthodox has little bearing. It is an interpretation built on scripture and must not be treated as an attack. Moreover, I actually laughed out loud at one of John Frame's answers to Open Theism's critiques. Frame writes, essentially, that God changing His mind was part of His unchanging plan. Seriously? That's your answer? God planned to change His mind? Other petty, non-apologetics related criticisms include: why God is definitely male, why we definitely believe in eternal torment and not annihilation, and, I'm not kidding, why the Churches of Christ are wrong to disallow the use of musical instruments. They actually directly confront the Churches of Christ three times. Oh, and as an added bonus, they address the issue of Lillith, who doesn't even appear in the Bible, just in case you get in a Biblical debate with a vampire.

A Wolf In Sheep's Clothing 1 by .. Jim Giatas (Fredonia, New York)
Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away. (Mark 13:31)

The New King James Version is not A King James Bible. The King James Version is a faithful and accurate translation of the Hebrew and Greek text of the Scripture. It is the Word of God. The NKJV is a deception - a wolf in sheep's clothing with:

+ Thousands of unnecessary changes,
+ Many erroneous departures from the KJV,
+ The deletion of the important distinctions between the second person pronoun singular and plural (thee, thou, thy, thine vs ye, you),
+ A form of brainwashing that has been intentionally designed by the publisher to be a bridge to the unreliable modern versions.

Please do a simple Google search on the NKJV to see detailed criticism about this unfortunate choice by the copyright owners, Thomas Nelson Publishing. Clearly, this is not an Orthodox Bible regardless of the many icons and study notes included.

I bought the orthodox study bible. It is a beautiful book. I believe the translation is good but the commentaries are so few (and in much of the time, not so deep).
There aren`t many differences in translation among serious Bibles (as is this one) and the Jerusalem Bible describes much of the differences between the different originals (Greek, Hebrew, etc).
So what I care the most is the commentaries, where I can learn the different approaches of the scriptures among the different churches/religions.
Unfortunatedly, this part was not very explored in this edition (I just read parts of the OT. Maybe in the NT things are different).

Not the LXX 1 by .. Canicus (TX)
Contrary to what the advertising says, the OT is *not* the Septuagint (LXX). Allow me to explain: It is an attempt to revise the NKJV OT to conform to the LXX. They had shoddy production standards, however, and did not complete the task. Fairly frequently throughout, the NKJV remains where it deviates fromt he LXX. Sadly, the editorial committe should have caught these.

Here are a few examples:

In Genesis 3:15, the OSB says "I will put enmity between you and the woman, between your seed and her seed. He shall bruise your head, and you shall be on guard for His heel." This verse can exemplify how shoddy the production standards were. "He shall bruise your head" comes straight from the NKJV. The LXX has "He shall guard against your head", while the second half of the prophecy is from the LXX. Why is the text mixed? What kind of oversight is it to modify half a sentance when the same variation occurs in both halves? This is very telling.

In the LXX, in the next chapter, Cain says to his brother, "Let us go out to the field" (the NRSV inserted this from the LXX, and I am using it). The NKJV lacks this verse, and consequently, it is omitted from the translation.

Habbakuk opens with God commanding Habbakuk to name his children "Not Pitied" and "Not My People". The LXX translates these, and thus, any translation of the LXX would do so as well. The NKJV transliterates the Hebrew. So does the OSB.

I selected these pretty much at random, and I stuck to the openings of books, because it is easier and sufficient for my purposes. I can't say these things happened on purpose. It occurred because the OSB was not held to professional standards. That does not bode well even where they did translate it.

The poor standards are rather easily seen throughout the book. The binding is poor, and because of the small margins, the words often run off into the gutter. They say they cite the fathers of the first millennium, but they include St. Seraphim of Sarov (a nintenth century saint) and Theodore of Mopsuestia (a heretic, not a father). I cannot find, however, where either were cited, if they were. The paper is thin, but to its credit, there isn't much bleed through.

Further, in the translation, they took no pains at all to make it conform to the same numbering scheme as standard English Bibles. Consequently, if someone cites chapter and verse for something from *any* other Bible, the reader cannot follow. This means that a group studying the OT from the Orthodox Study Bible is stuck either having all its members buy the OSB, not using it, or suffering from terrible confusion. A little more elbow grease would solve the problem: NETS did it, Brenton did it, and so on. There really is no excuse for it.

The notes are useful in places, and while the binding is terrible and not worth the price put on it (Zondervan has to recoup its cost for this overly expensive albatross somehow), one can live with it. The real problem is the translation, since it is not truly an LXX. The haphazard way that they followed their translation standard means this Bible will cause more harm than good.

So, English-speaking Orthodox Christians are stuck either using a Roman Catholic Bible or carrying two volumes to get close to a complete Bible (I carry NETS and the EOB NT). It's sad, but people really should stay away from the OSB until they release a new edition that meets a decent level of production standards.

A Valuable Resource for Any Christian 4 by .. Kyle Clark ()
The Orthodox Study Bible, published by Thomas Nelson, is a new study Bible with two interesting features. First, all of its notes and articles are written from an Eastern Orthodox perspective. Second, the Old Testament is translated from the Septuagint (LXX), which the Eastern Orthodox use, rather than the Masoretic Text (MT). These two features make it a valuable resource for most students of the Bible, Eastern Orthodox or not. For this review, it will be important to note that I am not an Eastern Orthodox, so my thoughts will be those of an outsider.

First, the edition I have is the hard cover. It comes with a nice, sturdy dust cover with a beautiful icon of Christ on the front. The colors of the cover match that of the icon, red and gold, very pleasing to behold. Removing the dust cover, the Bible looks a lot like many standard pew Bibles (at least for many of us Baptists). It is maroon with the "Orthodox Study Bible" written in gold on the front with the Eastern Orthodox cross also gold. The font of the text is decently sized (big enough to be read without being a large-font Bible), and the font of the notes are as well very readable. Some of my favorite parts of the Bible are the paintings/icons that are placed throughout the text. They are beautiful, and many seemed to be filled with theological depth.

The study Bible contains several articles and resources at the front and back of the book. The introduction explains the differences in numbering at some places (Psalms, Jeremiah, and Malachi) between the LXX and the MT. There is also a list comparing the Old Testament books in the Eastern Orthodox, Roman Catholic, and Protestant traditions. The different books are: 1 Esdras (a variation of Ezra), Tobit, Judith, 1-3 Maccabees, Psalm 151, Wisdom of Solomon, Wisdom of Sirach, Baruch, Epistle of Jeremiah, the Prayer of Manassah, the additions to Esther, and the additions to Daniel. While I do not consider these to be inspired, the church throughout history has found some value in them as well as it has quoted from them. If you do not have some form of the Apocrypha, here is a good place to get them. The study Bible also has a section with a brief overview of all the books of the Bible. This section is very brief and is not really something to write home about. There is also an introduction to the Eastern Orthodox church which is very informative.

In the back of the book, there are a set of articles entitled "For Prayer, Reading, and Study." The first article in this set is "How to Read the Bible" which explains four characteristics of Eastern Orthodox Bible reading: it should be obedient, ecclesial, Christ-centered, and personal. There are a lot of good things in this article that should apply across branches of Christianity, though there are some specifics I disagree with, but they are not necessarily bad (for instance, how the ecclesial characteristic works out, I am not sure liturgy is the best way to interpret through the Church, though it definitely could play in). The next tool provided is a lectionary. It offers reading based on the church calendar. Sadly, due to my Baptist background, I lack much knowledge about this tool, but it does offer some insight into the way the Eastern Orthodox think, how verses apply and the like. It also has a glossary, again useful for the Eastern Orthodox understanding of different topics. After the glossary, there are morning and evening prayers. I have yet to really use written prayers (someday I think I want to), but there are some good things in these prayers. They also contain the Nicene creed (sans the filioque clause) and some Psalms to use in the morning which I have used and I have enjoyed.

Then, there is an index to the notes which not only point out themes but also references to church fathers. This could be extremely useful if you wanted to find what a certain church father said on various things. This seems like a good time to discuss the notes themselves. The notes are not focused on a specific subject. They are generally explanative from the Eastern Orthodox perspective. Because of that, typology and allegory are used more frequently. Also of interest is that many of the notes come from church fathers. This gives a historical perspective that we do not often find in newer commentaries. Plus, if we do get a historical viewpoint on a passage, it is unlikely to come from the church fathers who are an important part of the church and the whole church has much to learn from them (as well as other parts of the church). Another type of note points out verses that are used for different occasions in the church calendar.

After the index of notes, there is the index to the study articles. These articles address many of the important issues. They attempt to address differing interpretations on the issues (but for instance in the article on Justification by Faith, they seem to misinterpret the idea of sola fides), and offer some idea of Eastern Orthodox theology on the big issues.

Overall, this is a very good study Bible even for those not Eastern Orthodox. The Eastern Orthodox, at least for many Protestants I know, are a mystery, and this study Bible clears up some of the theology and mindset. It is helpful in learning to respect this important branch of the Body of Christ. It, however, should not be the primary Bible of Protestants. It seems, though, to offer much for the Eastern Orthodox Christian, and I am glad to see this tool available for them, despite my disagreements in theology.

A solid source for studying Orthodox views and theology... 4 by .. Thomas Duff (Portland, OR United States)
Orthodox Christianity is something I've never much dug into, but having the The Orthodox Study Bible: Ancient Christianity Speaks to Today's World by Thomas Nelson Publishers gives me a chance to see familiar passages interpreted in line with Orthodox theology. This is a beautiful Bible that I expect will challenge some of my existing views and expand others.

In addition to providing the New Testament in the New Kings James Version, it also provides a new translation of the Old Testament from the Greek language using the Septuagint. The commentary provided in the study portions centers on thoughts and writings from the early Christian leaders, so as to provide a bridge between today's culture and the general thoughts of the early Orthodox church. This is admittedly a different angle than most study Bibles I've used that come from a more contemporary viewpoint and commentary. Couple that with explanations and schedules of the liturgy used in the different Orthodox churches, and I have a resource to add more color and history to my Christian experience. It seems to restore some of the awe and reverence that is so easily discarded in today's world.

While I don't plan on switching to the NKJV or this new Greek Old Testament translation as my primary translation of choice, I'm pleased to have The Orthodox Study Bible available as another source to dig out meaning and context from certain passages.

Bought for aunt-in-law and she loved it.

Not being too religious in our family, the aunt was quite taken with the idea that we (I - niece-in-law) researched and purchased this for her.

The Second Vatican Council's call for biblical renewal in every aspect of Catholic life revealed the need for a key to the Scriptures that would communicate their power by means of modern scholarship. Good Catholic Study Bible 4 by .. J. V. Markgraf (Midwest)
Originally I purchased this for my son who is going to Iraq. I was going to give it to him for Christmas. However, I noted the print was so small and he had asked for something bigger than what the Army issued prints are, so I ended up ordering him something different - not a study Bible. With all of the good study material included on each page, it is necessary for the print to be the smaller size - so it's a good Bible if you want a study Bible with all of the extra information in it - the references and maps, etc. However, for a praying, casual reading, type of Bible this may not be the one that you want.

The Catholic Study Bible 5 by .. A. Perez-Noy (Miami, Fl, USA)
I have multiple Bibles at home but this is beats them all. Very easy to read, Notes are extremely helpful, as well as the reading guide in the front of the book which helps you put what you are reading into a historlical perspective, making it easier to understand.

I highly reccomend this Bible to all that are starting their studies of the Sacred Book.

Awesome Study Bible 5 by .. L. Lyon (Texas)
It is so great to have a study Bible that has historical information and liturgal information that the Protestant Church is missing out on so much of today.

Is this really an update? 2 by .. Timothy Mccormick ()
I am not going to get into the discussion about the positive and negative features of the NAB, but rather focus on a couple things about this 2nd Edition of the Catholic Study Bible.

Two things stand out to me:
1) I really don't see the need in revising the older edition. To be honest, much of the material remains the same as in older versions. The textual notes, which come with all NAB's, is exactly the same. In addition, the inclusion of expanded reading guides and the terribly bland looking in-text maps seems to be hastly arranged.

2) I dislike the visual format of this edition. Personally, the original 1990 version of the Catholic Study Bible is much better. Does anyone else find the print too light? Also, the cross-referencing apparatus I think is not helpful, as well as the divide between the Sacred Text and the notes, which seems to similar.

While there are other study Bibles for Catholics in the process of being developed, like the Ignatius Study Bible, I am not sure this version is going to stand the test of time. I would rather use an older edition of The Catholic Study Bible or the much better HaperCollins Study Bible.

The new inductive study Bible (International inductive Study Series) 4 by .. Michael A. Pogozelec, Jr. (Pulaski, Pa)
I bought this as a gift, so only previewed it briefly. The person who received it likes it. I thought that the inductive system was very good to help one grasp more as he reads. And also requires one to identify the themes in the reading and to summarize them.... I think that this system would benefit anyone. I do however have one reservation: having been a Christian for only 4 years, I lack much information concerning historical background which I get as I read footnotes in a variety of study Bibles I use; also, I read commentaries. I think all of this is necessary. After previewing this Bible, I am trying to incorporate these ideas into my own studies.

New Inductive Study Bible 5 by .. Maureen A. Short (Severna Park, MD USA)
I loved this Bible from the first. It's just the right size and very user friendly. I've just started doing Precepts studies at church and this is a great added tool.

This Bible is excellent!! 5 by .. Nancy J. Dickson (Carleton, MI)
As a person who owns several Bibles, I found this one to be an excellent addition. The reason I purchased it was because I had just joined a group that was doing an inductive Bible Study. This Bible has given me a much better understanding of how to do that. This method of Bible Study makes the Bible more relevant and personal. I would recommend this Bible to anyone interested in an additional way to study, whether your on your own or in a group.

Awesome!! 5 by .. Michael R. Alexander ()
Not only did we receive this in record time, but the price is untouchable. It sells for at least $100 dollars in the bookstores. But the Bible itself is great as well. It's so much easier to study the word and navigate through. Highly recomend to those seeking a easier way to study the Bible. thanks

Excelent Study Bible 5 by .. E.L. (Kansas United States)
The Inductive Study Bible is excellent. The scripture is single column, double spaced with wide margins so you can mark key words and take notes. Each book also starts with instructions to guide you in your study. Other excellent study tools are included.
