Marketing Your Retail Store in the Internet Age by .. John Chidester (USA) Even though I have my website listed as #1 on all the major search engines I thought this book might be of help. After reading the book, I realized that I had done almost exactly what was prescribed in the book. It is really good advice and everyone building their own website needs to know this information before starting. Professional website designers and builders would be well advised by purchasing and reading this book also. The small price you pay is nothing compared to the price you would spend otherwise trying to get top listing in the search engines. It also has advice on other types of advertising that can really save you money. I highly recommend this book because it takes you through the entire process of business building.

Customer reviews I was not impressed by .. Jestin A. Burich (davenport, IA United States) Folks use your common sence and save the 12 bucks on this one. This book would be good for any one under 16, but for even the most sheltered adult this book will be a waste of your time. Good Luck
Good Overview by .. () This book provided a good overview for some one looking to get started in the retail business. I would caution readers that much of the information is directed more towards a retail business that will be located in a mall setting, not necessarily a stand-alone or downtown located specialty or boutique shop. With that in mind, it certainly provided good personal advice and insight.
So you want to own the Store : by .. () A general summary of how to start and run a store, almost common sense. Not very use full in terms of marketing and customer service. Based on an 'American' way of running a large size store instead of a boutique store.
A must-read for any aspiring retail entrepreneur by .. Eron Shosteck eshosteck@njdc.com (Arlington, Virginia) Mort Brown offers indispensable advice to people considering going into retail business for themselves. His conversational style and examples from his own experiences running a candy shop and a pet store offer the reader a behind-the-scenes look at what goes into the retail operation. From the daily interaction with customers, to the satisfaction that comes from being your own boss, Brown shares his wisdom on every topic related to running a profitable retail operation. If you're thinking about opening your own store, you'd be wise to read this book before you draft the first page of your business plan. One wonders how many retail failures might have been successes if only their proprietors had read Mort Brown's "So You Want To Own The Store" and taken his advice to heart.

Erica Cayne (California) This book is heavy on motivation and light on actual how-to. If you need cheerleading about how necessary passion for retailing and customer service is to be successful, then this book is for you. If you are looking for specific information and resources on how to start and run a successful specialty store, then this is not for you.
Great Guide by .. Laquisha Jackson () This was an excellent read. It brought so many things to my attention that I never really thought about. It mentions websites and names of things that I will actually use. I am just getting my ideas together to start a boutique, and this was perfect for me.
Excellent ! by .. E. Martin () This book was immensely helpful to me in my quest to open a small specialty business. I truly can't think of a question the author doesn't address. I highly recommend it.

Product Description How can you successfully sell to a retail chainstore? Retail Detailed will aid salespeople and manufacturers to better understand and sell more products to the chain store buyer. Customer reviews Blunt and to the point...Just the way Buyer's will be. by .. Chanta Rose (San Francisco) This book is written in the concversational style of Merrill Lehrer, he writes as if he is speaking, maybe even lecturing you about the hard truths of selling your product(s) to the Buyer of a large retail chain. Although, at times, more details would have been good, early on you get the drift. You need the buyers and the buyers don;t want you to think that they also need you but if your product is "hot" then they will need you just as much.
There's a lot of tricky business in selling to retail chains nowadays. Once apon a time, if a store purchased your product then that was the end of it. The onus to sell the product to the consumer was then upon the store...this is not the case in the present day.
Lehrer is blunt. He explains whhat you need to be, what you need to do and also what to look out for (eg. a retailer asking for your best price where no rebates, etc are taken into account...make sure you have that in writing or you may be charged for advertising, etc).
At under 200 pages it is an easy, quick read with some real gems of information in there!
Informative & Down-to-earth by .. Saunam Bhattacharjee (Florida & Assam) Merill has done a good job on a topic that's receives very little coverage in the publishing world. The book is worth the money because it touches on most of the critical issues that needs to be covered in order to establish/strengthen business relationship between manufacturers/distributors & chain store buyers.
Two ways in which this book can be further enhanced, if there is going to be a revised edition someday:
1. Some topics, like planograms, needs a slightly more indepth coverage.
2. Merrill writes as he speaks; which is mostly good, but sometimes it's hard to follow. I think the editors might like to work on rephrasing some of the content.
Overall, this is a fantastic buy.
Retail Detailed by .. Lawrence Cobb (Rockford, IL United States) In my years of selling I have taken sales courses and have read many sales management books. Most have spoken on things like features and benefits, or how to close the sale. Others have given me tips on scheduling my time. Merrill's book has brought to light an issue all sales people need to understand, that is, what is important to the buyer. Seldom does the average salesperson understand what it takes to be on the other side of the desk. This book has a great deal of insight into the analysis that a buyer goes through to maintain their assortment. My advice is to take this book and understand the process the buyer will be going through prior to making your next presentation.

Informative, detailed and fun to read by .. () This was so much fun to read. I've met Merrill Lehrer at a conference and his sense of humor is in this book. It's rare for the customer to tell us sales types how to be more effective, but that's just what he does here. Frankly, Merrill confirms many of my suspicions and revealed all kinds of things that have changed the way I approach my retail accounts. I've been selling to major and minor retailers for over 20 years and didn't think that I could be taught too much more about the ways of the retailer. I now work for a consumer goods manufacturer, but I've been a manufacturers rep in a previous position too, and I've called on the Targets, Wal-Marts, and a bunch of smaller regional/local players. So I didn't think I could learn too much. Fortunately, this book went the distance for me and did offer some great guidance. I know that he aimed to put sales people into the retailer's head, and he does show you their point of view. I'm now using different language and approaching my customers differently and I can tell you that they've noticed it. This is an easy read--I quickly ran through it on a road trip--and I recommend it to you. I'm surprised that a retailer would offer up all this advice, but I'm glad he did. Business is very tough. This delightful book has helped me to communicate better, understand the retailers intracacies and I know it's given me an edge over my competition.

Product Description All you need is this step-by-step guide. It gives you the inside scoop on starting your own retail clothing store. Customer reviews Useful reference by .. Ronni Katz (Keller, TX) The book is a well laid out reference for anyone wishing to get into the retail clothing business. As a budding fashion designer looking to create her own outlet shop to sell my line of clothing this book was helpful for getting a start. I would recommend the book to anyone looking to get into retail!
Helpful by .. Shelley (Pittsburgh, PA) I thought that this book was realistic, rather than discouraging. Unlike some other books about retail startup, it assumed some previous reatil knowledge on the part of the reader (which makes sense... you probably shouldn't think of opening a store if you have no retail experience at all!) Cost startup worksheets were particularly helpful.
This is a good book by .. Darren J. Brown (New Orleans) I really liked this book.
It was very Descriptive & resourceful.
It taught me everything i needed to learn about the clothing retail business.
If your interested in opening your own clothing business this is the book for you!
Good summery. nothing more by .. J. Xu (Boston, MA USA) Its a good summery of what the typcial clothing shop is like and gives a lot of general information but doesn't explain how to do those things. Example, the books says a computer system can help me track inventory but doesn't tell me how, what i need, where can i find such a system or what are some good software to do that
Good starting point by .. IR (Mass, USA) I have to disagree with the previous poster. The book doesn't try to discourage the reader from getting into the retail business, it just points out that the retail business is a risky one that may not turn a profit for years. This book gives some helpful advice for would-be retailers as well as established ones, and also points you in the direction of some associations that can help (i.e., S.C.O.R.E. ). I definately reccomend it.

Customer reviews not very helpful by .. Design Maven (San Francisco, CA) Bought this and the Visual Merchandising book from the same publishers. Not much useful information here. These very basic overviews of dated store designs would only be useful to a complete novice.
If you are a retail designer you are better off going to your local mall and using your own powers of observation.
Pretty Stores that Sell Product by .. John Matlock (Winnemucca, NV) This collection features interior store designs, judged for excellence in store planning, visual merchandising, innovation, graphics and lighting design. Full-color photos and detailed captions of these 43 leading-edge establishments capture a large range of retail spaces.
The stores that have been selected for inclusion in this book range from South Korea (a full-line department store), to the Victoria's Secret in Troy, Michigan, a specialty food shop in Australia, a supermarket in Mexico, to a new look at Harrods in London.
As with other arcitecture picture books, this is a book to give you ideas about the design of stores that will attract prospects and turn them into customers. The stores themselves vary from free standing buildings to spaces within malls. While these stores are pretty, the overall function of the store is not forgotten.
