A MUST HAVE!! 5 by .. T. Spencer ()
This is one of those MUST HAVE cookbooks! Even if you don't use cookbooks, you will find this one fascinating just to read; and then I can almost promise you will want to make something from it! I was floored by the things in it that I never ever imagined you could make yourself. I got my copy from my mother in law after pulling it out of her basement and sitting down to copy a couple recipes; she gave it to me. It is the one cookbook I would miss the most out of my vast collection.

Better than your favorite delicatessen! 5 by .. A reader in Central America ()
I am under the impression that there are two versions of this cookbook - the first written by the authors before the days of microwave ovens, slow cookers and other more modern, affordable kitchen appliances and then the other a new version, rewritten years later to take advantage of the new appliances - but the basic recipes are basically the same. Only the methods are different, where they can be improved or speeded up.

You can find everything you ever loved to buy at German or Italian delicatessens - the sauerkraut, the pickles, the bagels, the Italian sweet sausage, the Italian spicy sausage, the stuffed peppers, EVERYTHING I love. The first time I found the old version in the Army Post library, I photocopied half the book and enjoyed all the great stuff I wasn't able to buy in a foreign country. The authors say they love to make all these things from scratch (even homemade ketchup!) because they don't want their families to have all the food additives in commercially prepared foods. Frankly, I'm not so squeamish -- but I LOVE the food - think corned beef and real, smoked pastrami and cracked olives. The newer version uses blenders, heavy-duty mixers, home smokers, microwave ovens, no matter what you use, recipes are easy to follow, ingredients are not usually hard to find. Enjoy!

from the ashes 5 by .. Sarah Cooper (Little Deer Isle, ME United States)
When my house burned down and I lost all my cookbooks, the one favorite I coouldn't replace is this one. I know two people who own it and I've been borrowing it a lot, esp. during summer/harvest. I need it for jams, pickles, sauerkraut. At this moment I have sauerkraut bubbling away and a rye sourdough starter that's just ready to use.
I don't know of another book that covers all these things and...graham crackers, deviled ham, chutney. Make it all! Just about my favorite cookbook and now I've found it!!

Worth the search 5 by .. V. Muratore (Tulsa, OK United States)
My copy of this book is spine-snapped in several places, dog-eared, and spotted and soiled throughout, in spite of all my care. I searched for years to find a copy to give to a fellow "basics" cook and she was as thrilled with it as I have been. The anise cookies are fabulous, as are the pretzels and, in fact, every other recipe I've made. A Must Have for a serious cook's bookshelf.

Truly Unique 5 by .. Michael Wilson (Brooklyn, NY, USA)
I found a reference to this after having searched the internet for marshmallow recipes. The recipe was posted online, but I bought the book figuring it was the right thing to do. I had NO idea how delightful this would be. Most of the recipes I've never seen anyplace else (gingerbread cookie MIX!?!) The marshmallow recipe alone has won me a couple marriage proposals. If you have any impulse to cook or bake, please buy this book. You will be amazed.

A Forever Summer Book for Cooks and Armchair Travelers 5 by .. (Greenwich Village, New York City)
Lori's book is full of inspiration! Her recipes are easy and sophisticated, and the results I've had have been visually dazzling, too! I love all the mini-histories, anecdotes and international flavors she's included along with hundreds of facts, tips and mini-recipes. I'll be making ice-cream desserts all year long now!

The Scoop: Much more than floats and sundaes 5 by .. ()
I didn't think I would be interested in a book on store-bought ice cream desserts but with the encouragement of my ice-cream-loving child I agreed to have a look. The second recipe in the book, gelato affogato (ice cream with espresso and Cognac) showed this was going to be much more sophisticated and delightful than what I thought. There are root-beer floats and chocolate milkshakes (hers is quadruple-chocolate!) but also scroppino (Champagne, lemon sorbet, and vodka) and sorbet terrine with raspberry sauce. Best are her sauces. They're ingenious, smart, delightful, and I've tried only a few. I recommend roasted strawberries and mangos with lime. Clementines with cardamom and cherry compote with balsamic vinegar will be next.

I loved Lori's lemon dessert book, but this one delights me just as much. My family thinks she's the best, and I agree.

THE ICE CREAM DOCTOR HAS ARRIVED! 5 by .. Cupcakes (Lexington, KY USA)
Wowee! I love this delicious looking book. Lori Longbotham (author of Luscious Lemon Desserts) proves she is the queen of all desserts. There are so many wonderful sounding sweets in this great book (150 in all) it's hard to know where to begin-- but I'd start with the Sky-High Layered Ice Cream Cake, chockful of chocolate and hazelnut gelato, nutello--it's so simple yet so sinful (top it with marshmallow sauce, yummo!) Lots and lots of cool iceas so that are so easy even kids could make them (like the Snowballs, ice cream rolled in toasted coconut and drenched in hot chocolate sauce), miniature ice cream bombes and cookie sandwiches, sorbet pops...It made me want to quit my day job and open my own ice cream parlor. Really gorgeous photo and cool looking design--makes a great gift, especially for your friends with their own ice cream makers.

Kids will love this book 5 by .. Linda Michelson (New York, New York)
My 12 year old son was given this book as a present. He loved looking at all the recipes and made me a spectacular ice-cream soda using the recipe from this book. It cleared up for me the difference between an ice-cream soda/float and all the options for the best use of store bought ice-cream. I highly recommend the book as a present for pre-teens and also for adults.

Playing with your ice cream! 5 by .. ()
This author feels the same way I do about ice cream! I am so thrilled with the Scoop. I got it as a gift and it's all about playing with your ice cream! Taking store bought ice cream and making all kinds of stuff out of it. Fancy cakes, pies, and tarts like Sky-High Ice Cream Cake, cones, pops, sandwiches, old-fashioned soda fountain treats like a Strawberry Blonde Float, and mixing and matching with tons of sauces. I think there are 30 recipes for sauces and at least 10 for flavoring whipped cream. Everything is really easy. This book is definitely by an ice cream lover. I can tell she loves everything about ice cream--like I do.

Too PC and Way Too Simple 1 by .. R. Kottke (Cross Plains, WI)
I found the booklet to be way too politically correct for a book on sourdough bread making. The comments are off the optic and tend to sour ones opinion of the information given. I found the information to overly simple to the point of being vague. The "An Introduction To Sourdough Baking" is a hundredfold better buy at only 2-1/2 times the price. I strongly feel that this booklet was a waste of $2.

It really is simple! 5 by .. Maria Franken (Centralia, WA United States)
If you want to make naturally leaven bread with wild yeast you can make in your kitchen, Simple Sourdough is the essay to read. I love the idea of making something from nothing, and the concepts I gleaned from this booklet grounded me in the basics of sourdough bread making.

My whole-wheat starter (as described in this book) is bubblier and more active than a starter I tried to cultivate with store bought dry active yeast! It takes much patience to make this work, but it's well worth the effort. I make the tastiest bread, for little cost or trouble, and my family loves the results.

Simple Sourdough is not a book of recipes; it's pages filled with a concept to sourdough bread making that can be expounded on with a cook's initiative and imagination. I would recommend this booklet to anyone who wants to make sourdough simply.

delivers what it promises 5 by .. Mayer Goldberg (Beer Sheva, Negev Israel)
WHAT IS THIS BOOK

First off, you should understand what you're buying: You're buying a PDF file that can be viewed in Acrobat, printed, etc. It will take several hours for your order to go through (why, Amazon??) and you will be sent an email with a download link. The document, this file, is 12 pages long. A total of 3 pages in this book will have nothing to do with making sourdough bread (cover, about the author, etc), so in fact, you're paying $ for 9 pages of information. This doesn't mean that you shouldn't buy the book -- it just means that this is a very small book (at a very low price), and that you should be aware of this up front so that you're not disappointed. Of these 9 pages, there is quite a bit of fluff (and I don't mean dough); I think these 9 pages could have easily fit in 5.

WHAT IS THIS BOOK NOT

This is NOT a cookbook, in the sense that you will not find dosens of recipes here. You will find only one recipe and the author will present you with several (simple) variations on it. There are many books on making sourdough breads that come with dosens of recipes. If you feel this is what you need -- skip this one. I didn't and I'm very happy I got it. Read on...

WHY I LIKE IT

Rather than merely listing recipes, this book TEACHES you all you need to understand about sourdough. You could say, "the theory of sourdough". It explains in great detail what is dough, why dough rises, what are yeast, what kinds of flour exist and how to pick the ones you want, what is sourdough, how a crust is formed, etc. If you read this book, you will actually learn a few things, rather than have some mindless recipes to follow. Once you understand this ONE SINGLE recipe, you will be able to improvise and invent and modify it to create countless delicious variations. All on your own, all without any additional help.

This book will make you independent:

- You only need four and water and salt. You don't need to buy yeast or sourdough starters. Ever.

- The recipe works. Period. I've made my third batch last week, and the results are getting more and more delicious with each try. I've been making some variations on the basic recipe from day one, and it's been wonderful.

- You do not need to measure or weigh ANYTHING: Not flour, not water, not sponge -- NOTHING. The book will show you how to use textures to figure out what's missing and with experience, nothing will be missing -- you'll be cooking like your great-grandmother probably did -- with your own intuition.

- There's no real substitute for understanding. Luckily, there's not much to understand: Reading 9 pages is something you can do in a matter of minutes. Personally, I'd much rather have a book with one recipe, that would show me how to create countless others, than have a book with basically a long list of recipes and no principles to guide me. This book is one of the shortest routes to making sourdough breads -- get it and you'll love the results!

The loss of a child is always a terrible shock to a family, but Leah is profoundly affected by the accidental death of her older adopted brother, Luce. She questions her parents' love for her and how she compares to her near perfect brother. Did his birth parents know what they have missed....did Luce ever wonder about his birth parents? The very shy and introverted Leah decides to try to find out about her brother's biological parents and about the adoption.

Mom seems to be lost in her own world and locked away with the memories of her beautiful boy. Leah's father is coping with the loss much better, and her grandmother, Bibi, helps Leah to accept this turning point in her life most of all. Leah decides that knowing more about Luce's birth family and perhaps finding them will help her to cope with her loss. Her best friend and Luce's girlfriend aid in her search, and when her parents realize what her goal is, they begin to share the details of the adoption with her. Did Luce ever want to find his birth parents? Should she look for them?

Sandra Belton writes with sensitivity about a difficult subject, and her characters are believable and sympathetic. In her first-person, present-tense narrative, Belton expresses Leah's intense feelings in heartbreaking prose that shows her sorrow, jealousy, anger, and love, and defines a "real" family.

This would be an especially meaningful story for any teen who is adopted, or has adopted siblings, but the tragedy of losing a loved one is universal, and the message of parental love in this story is one that will long live in your memory.

Good for a child with a loss. 4 by .. J Romaine Roberts (Washington, DC)
The story is written very lovingly about a child who has lost her beloved brother and finds out things about him after he has past. She feels somewhat left out, he's abandoned her without sharing his secrets. She does find peace and continues to love him. This story, as it is written gives help for children or adults with grave loss. Good story.
