Customer reviews Not bad, but could use a broader perspective by .. MakerDave (McKinney, TX) This book delivers some very useful information, especially with respect to business plans and the intricacies of incorporating your business, buying insurance, etc.
That said, the author clearly has the mindset of a hardnosed middle manager, and the focus of the book is far more about maximizing profit margins and actively soliciting sales than running a people-friendly business. An inordinate amount of attention is given to in-store roasting, which by far overshadows the actual coffee bar part of the operations. Also, the author gives some terrible advice on handling staff and customers, advocating lowballing staff salary, having a potential employee perform a "trial shift" after a successful interview, and "rewarding" completion of banal training tasks with a training completion certificate--which the author claims "instill[s] a sense of pride in your staff which will shine through in all aspects of their work."
Aside from an obvious struggle with people skills, the author is extremely knowledgeable about the subject, and lays the material out in an easy-to-follow format. I feel that the book is oriented more toward the entrepreneur looking for the best opportunity to make money more than it is designed for someone who wants to run a coffee bar specifically because it appeals to them. An excellent companion to this book would be The Complete Idiot's Guide to Starting and Running a Coffee Bar (The Complete Idiot's Guide), which is very much on the other end of the spectrum, focusing more on running a friendly and successful business, but with fewer specifics on the business plan and logistics involved. The two books together give a very complete set of information.
Good information; plain language. by .. Deckchair21 (Ontario, Canada) Make sure to do plenty of research before embarking on a venture such as owning/running a coffee bar; it's not a easy as it seems.
This book provides a good start.
Great Book by .. Robert J. Erb Jr. () Fantastic information. Everything you need to know presented in a well thought out format.
A Good and Practical Book by .. Peter Yoon (Seoul, Korea) Hi, I am a Korean who would like to run my own coffee bar in Korea soon. It was very difficult to find really good guide books here in Korea, I mean ,written in Korean. Hoping to find one, I visited this Amazon and to my happiness I fianlly could find it, this book 'Start and Run a Coffee Bar'. This book is so practical and helpful to me. I appreciate that two writers would share their experience and knowledge with us.
Really Useful by .. New enterprises inc. (California) I usually dont write these sorts of reviews but this was just exactly what i was looking for. A great primer on things you need to know and do to open a coffee shop including checklists. I would recommend it to newcommers to the business.

Product Description It takes more than just dreams and a spare bedroom to run a successful bed and breakfast. It takes hard-work, determination, and a good business plan."Start & Run a Bed & Breakfast" shows readers how they can open their homes to visitors and make a profit. The clearly written text, along with dozens of worksheets and explanatory samples show how to do everything from planning renovations to record keeping. It also provides answers to some common questions such as - Who are the customers I should cater to? How do I promote my business? How do I plan my workday? And What kind of food services should I offer? This is essential reading for anyone who already runs a B&B as well as for those who are thinking of starting up. Customer reviews Not bad, a bit dated by .. Scott Thomas (Virginia, USA) I ordered this book based, in part, on the favorable review. However, it is very dated, though basically good. For example, this is the 3rd edition, and is obviously updated to include the importance of marketing on the internet. However, this conflicts with the strong emphasis in at least two sections on NOT getting a personal computer if you don't have computer experience (how will you answer email inquiries?).
It would also be helpful to know that most of the things discussed in the way of Market Research can now be found on the internet, yet this isn't even mentioned.
The CD was unexpected (not mentioned in the description), but a big disappointment. When I discovered it, since there are MANY forms and "surveys" to be filled out in the book, I assumed these would be contained on the CD. That is not the case. The CD contains generic marketing and info forms that are nearly useless. I found myself creating my own electronic forms from the book, which could easily have been included on the CD.
All that being said, if the reader keeps in mind that the book is a little out of date, the basic info is still very helpful. It provides a very thorough approach to determining the type of inn to consider, potential guests, estimating the season and volume of business, evaluating the competition, etc.
The B&B Trade by .. Beth () The authors of S&R a Profitable Bed and Breakfast know the in's and out's of the B&B business. As they say in the introduction, "we were blissfully unaware of the many pitfalls and problems we would face." In this book, the authors cover the good and bad in the B&B trade, creating a thorough understanding for those interested in running their own B&B. Topics include: finances, business licenses and inspections, customer service, advertising and promotion, and much more. The "sweet" recipes at the beginning of each chapter, are an added bonus. Also included are worksheets to help you plan your B&B. If you want to open your own B&B and do it right, I recommend you pick up a copy of this book first.

Product Description - Work part-time, full-time, at home, or abroad - Travel for free - Learn from the owners of thriving travel agencies - Go where you want to go...when you want to go Customer reviews Start and Run a Profitable Tour Guiding Business by .. R. Godwin () a simple, easy to read book with lots of helpful information on operating a tour business.
Not very useful by .. B. Rabotic (Licensed Guide, 'Belgrade Sightseeing') Absolutely basic approach to tour guiding in this book can hardly give you any valuable knowledge of the profession! Obviously, the authors were unable to give us a more insightful and informative text on tour guiding as such, so they decided to fill their book with some other topics more or less irrelevant to the theme. The second half of the 'Tour Guiding Business' gives us an equally simplified approach to travel agent practice focusing on such topics as 'Making your business legal', 'Equipping your office' and 'Marketing a large tour operation'. Think twice before you decide that you need the book.
Missing important details; basic business boilerplate by .. Michael D. Slater (Imperial Republic of Singapore) This book was a disappointment. I found it to have several chapters of vague generalities and typical small business boilerplate that I don't want to pay for. It definitely does not give me the information I need to know to start a tour operator business. The most important example of it is it simply says nothing whatsoever about insurance and how to protect yourself from liability. That in itself should be an absolute condemnation of the book. The only reason I didn't give it 1 star is it says a bit about how to guide a tour, which someone might find slightly useful, but overall, the book is not worth buying.
For Those Who Love to Travel and Make Money by .. T. Asplund (Calgary) This book gives an in-depth look at the tour guiding industry. The authors provide invaluable travel tips from behind the scenes. Included are checklists of travel items, examples, and an Appendix filled with useful travel organizations. Anyone who enjoys travelling and would like to make money doing it, should pick up this book.

Author : Daylle Deanna Schwartz Edition : Updated Number of Pages : 304 Publisher : Billboard Books List Price : $19.95 Amazon Price : $11.09 Used Price : $8.85 |
Product Description "Daylle Deanna Schwartz has conveniently packaged all you need to know to start your own record label in a very reader-friendly new edition. What took me over ten years to learn the hard way has been easily explained in Start & Run Your Own Record Label. If you’re thinking about competing in the often-treacherous world of independent record labels, arm yourself with this book." – RYAN KUPER, Redemption Records In its first edition, Start and Run Your Own Record Label was an authoritative resource for anyone who ever dreamt of building their own record business from the ground up. Comprehensive, informative, practical, and accessible, the book covered every aspect of setting up, owning, and operating a record label. Since the publication of that edition, the music industry has witnessed a new era for independent record labels. While not profoundly different, new technology has made it easier and more affordable for practically anyone to record their own music at home and to sell it online and at performances. As a result, increasingly more musicians are finding it easier to achieve their musical goals. In the Updated and Expanded edition, new chapters are included to address such issues as resources for the business end of running a record label, getting exposure, exploring alternative markets for all genres of music, and maximizing the use of the Internet. In addition, all chapters are rewritten and more interviews with cutting edge experts on today's music market have been added. Customer reviews Maybe As a Primer by .. John M. Storey (Winter Park, FL USA) Solid book, but it's a bit lacking in the 'actual advice' realm. I find that in almost all 'how to start your own record label' books, no one wants to tell you exactly where to go to make your tasks happen. I would recommend this to those of you who have absolutely no idea where to start; if you have a background in music, at all, I'd pass it and move to Donald Passman.
Cool Book by .. Daniel Hickman (Branson, MO USA) Very interesting and easy to read book. Shipping time and price were great also. If the book had been in a little better condition, I would have given it 5 stars.
Glibly incomplex by .. Inna Goldberg (NY, USA) I found this book to be very juvenile; the author does not interpret complex ideas, but makes glib, subjective statements according to how things "feel" to her. While she touts being informed about the labyrinths of business as a great virtue, she wastes most of her time waxing inane in the spirit of elementary school wall decor about how one can "do it!" with the right attitude. Yes, there were some dilapidated facts about how to file for a business license and trademark a name, but nothing beyond what a simple internet search cannot not yield in the grubby paws of the marginally literate.
I would only recommend this book to someone who is indeed in elementary school and has been assigned one of those "what do you wanna be when you grow up?" reports according to a book the teacher makes you select from a little cubby standing in the back of the nauseatingly pureblind-carpeted classroom, labeled "READING IS A VERB" or the like. You take the book home and try to read it, only it does not make much sense to you, so you content yourself with looking at the pictures....except that in this case, there are no pictures.
The story of my brother's life by .. NixPix (OKC,OK) I actually purchased this book for my brother who has an underground record label, going on about 5 years (?). He said it's absolutely amazing and that he can relate to most of the things that are covered. It has a lot of great suggestions and views on running a pre-existing record label and even starting one from scratch. He has learned a lot of legal issues too that he's taken care of and this is the only book I ever recall seeing him open! And he read it in 2 days!
Getting The Basics Down by .. Jared M. (New York) I found this book to be an excellent resource just coming into the music business. It teaches a lot of the basic concepts in starting and running a record label. The book and specifically, the music publishing deals and distribution information, helped me to get a better understanding of how the business works. I would have liked to see a little more detailed information on signing an artist, but that maybe a little too much for a basic book. Good shelf keeper

K. S. JEFFERY (Wabasha, MN United States) I purchased this book along with several others (from NOLO publishing, mostly) before incorporating my business. It was a very good read that introduced me to a number of important concepts in business. After I had been in business for over a year, I pulled this book off the shelf again and reread it. I was pleasantly surprised to first realize how much I had retained from the book, and second how much of the information proved dead-on in terms of salient factors to be considered in operating an S-Corp. I have since returned to this book time and again to review key chapters - especially at the end of each fiscal year and again around tax time. I highly recommend this book to anyone starting an S-Corp who, like me, never took business classes in college.
Great for novices. by .. Bradely Pitts (UT) I'm starting a corporation from scratch, and this book has helped me immensely. Written simply enough for the inexperienced, and thoroughly enough for the time-worn boss. I love how the author at once can include details and tips on mistakes that many people make, but never strays too far from the subject matter. After reading this book I feel I've gained a solid foundation for the way a business should be run.
Add this one to your library for sure.
Informative, hard to plod through in places by .. Mark Yoffe (New York, NY United States) The book has a lot of useful information about setting up and running small corporations.
Never Judge a Book by its Cover by .. Baazumi (New York City, NY) This book provides vital information not usually covered in most self-publishing books and is a solid resource guide. Another confirmation that you need to read many books on your subject to familiarize yourself with the business. Areas such as how to protect your inventory by filing a UCC in the state the distributor is based, understanding the ins and outs of how distributors work, how to establish discounts and payment schedules that protect your financial structure, how to properly set-up your Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, taxes, LLC's, S Corporations, etc. Peter Hupalo's only weak area is his cover design. Anyone this intelligent should know their strengths and weakness's, and graphic design/layout is his. His book deserves better and would appeal to more buyers if it was redesigned.
Focus by .. SCorpNovice (Tacoma, WA) I found the book focused more on C Corporations. A few of the chapters did focus on S Corps and it answered a lot of questions I had, and also raised more questions in the process. I found it did not go into real detail on S Corp deductions, or how to handle tax liability for an owner/employee.

After reading this book I got my first painting contract for $2500. A+ Nice book. Excellent for anyone who wants to get started in the business right away.
Really Short by .. Karl Lazlo () I knew how many pages the book was when I got it, but I didn't know that its only about four and a half inches tall and the print is really large and spaced out. The other thing about this book is that it doesn't provide nearly enough details. This is a book designed for someone who has no painting experience and next to no experience in construction. I guess for the absolute beginner this is okay, but not for me.
