Product Description

On December 21, 1968 the National Aeronautics & Space Administration sent three men to orbit the moon.

Commander Frank Borman, Command Module Pilot James Lovell and Lunar Module Pilot Willam Anders were to be the first living creatures to enter deep space. It was the boldest step yet taken in the quest to fulfill President John Kennedy’s goal of landing a man on the moon by the end of the decade.

To accomplish the task the world’s biggest and most complex machine was built by a syndicate of America’s leading aerospace manufacturers. The Apollo-Saturn V was a goliath and the flight of Apollo 8 proved it was an incredible vehicle.

Capable of throwing over 100,000 pounds to the moon it was at that time the most complex machine ever devised by the hand of man.

Apollo 8: The NASA Mission Reports finally puts in one place six of the most important documents from this triumphant odyssey, The Press Kit, The Pre-mission Report & Objectives, The Supplemental Technical Report, The Post Flight Summary, the Post Flight Mission Operation Report and the Crew Debriefing.

These six documents show the staggering proportions of the undertaking required to send men into lunar orbit. It is a testament to the ingenuity of the American people and the bold courage of three men.

Includes: CD-ROM with Captain Lovell Interview, plus hundreds of pictures!

First of a great series 5 by .. Voodude (Canada)
If you're really into the history of space flight (as I am), then this is the first entry in a series that you will love. These aren't really for someone with a casual interest in the subject, but are primarily intended for the dedicated enthusiast who wants to learn more about the missions than can be obtained from more ordinary references.

The various volumes in the Apogee Mission Reports series (covering Apollo, Gemini, Mercury and Shuttle flights) reprint a lot of difficult to find NASA documentation for the various flights. For each flight, there are reprints of the original press kits, with biographical details of the prime and backup crews, the planned schedule for the flight, information on the flight plan, etc. One of the things that I find most interesting is that the press kit lists some of the options for the flight in the event that things didn't go entirely to plan. It's interesting to see the advance preparations that were made for in flight emergencies, or for possible alternative missions.

Other things featured in the mission reports are the original debriefings of the crews after the flights, where the details of the mission just ended are discussed with the crews and their opinions on how the mission went (and suggestions for future improvements) are solicited.

Each book also includes a CD-Rom, with extra material. In the case of the Apollo 8 disk, it includes a copy of the official NASA film on Apollo 8, an interview with Apollo 8 Command Module Pilot Jim Lovell, and scans of lots of pictures from the flight. Similar extras are on the CD-ROMS (or DVDs) on other books in the series.

Some of the information in the press kits is slightly repetitive from one flight to the next, but there is plenty of really good stuff here for the enthusiast. Given that the original NASA documents are hard to find (and generally very expensive when they are available), the availability of this range of reprinted versions is a godsend - having a set is like having the NASA archives on your bookshelf! Hopefully, this series will eventually cover the entire history of American Manned Spaceflight. These reprints (together with the availability of the complete film/video from the missions on DVD from Spacecraft Films) are the best thing that ever happened for Space enthusiasts!

Apollo 8 - To The Moon 5 by .. K. Gates ()
This volume is the one that started the Apogee Books series on the Apollo Program. It contains reproductions of the mission reports, a press kit and many other very important documents detailing man's first journey to another world. A great CD ROM is also included containing videos of the flight. A wonderful volume overall!

The Book That Started it All 5 by .. John R. Keller (Houston, TX United States)
During the last ten days of 1968, NASA launched the Apollo 8 mission to the moon, in what has been deemed as one of the agencies boldest and most daring adventures. In addition to being the first manned launch of the Saturn V rocket; this mission is much more famous and important as it was the first manned mission that left Earth orbit and the first manned mission to orbit the moon. This mission made such an impact on the world politics of the day that the crew was named as Time's Men of the Year. This mission was commanded by Frank Borman who was accompanied by Jim Lovell, of Apollo 13 fame, and Bill Anders.

The book opens with the typical NASA mission press kit. Unlike many later Apollo mission press kits, this is quite long and very detailed, containing descriptions on everything from orbit and reentry profiles to the crew biographies. The next section contains two preflight operation reports which provide an enormous amount of information on the operation of the Saturn V and the Command Module.

The debrief section, which is about 15% of the book, contains the crew comments and feelings about various parts of the mission and for the most part avoids the technical language that many of the NASA documents include, but it does contain many undefined acronyms. The crew debrief contains crew comments from the lift-off to the landings and discusses many of the technical aspects of the mission, such a telemetry, photography, communications, etc. I always like this section of these reports, because it provides an insight to the crew's feelings on the operation of the space vehicle and the mission in general.

The CD Rom that accompanies the book is divided into three sections. The first section contains a half hour interview with Jim Lovell. The second section contains a 15 minute NASA produced movie called "Go for TLI" which presents highlights from the mission, but it unfortunately does not contain the Christmas reading of Genesis. The final section contains 850 of the mission photos taken by the crew.

Some general information that might be useful.
1) This report contains scanned-in documents from previously released NASA documents. In order to preserve the spirit of the original reports, all typographical and grammatical errors have NOT been fixed.

2) Proceeds from the book goes to "The Watch" an asteroid impact research project of the Space Frontier Foundation. In other words, Apogee Books is making very little off the sale of US government produced books and documents.

3) Many people have asked why the post mission science reports are not included. Since NASA has published several books with hundred of pages each, the NASA Special Publications Series, it would be difficult to include this voluminous amount of data.

4) Make sure you buy the second edition, because it contains more documentation in the text and more features on the enclosed CD.

One more important thing to note: This book was the first book of Apogee books space series.

Valuable technical background to a critical mission 4 by .. Kevin W. Parker (Greenbelt, MD)
This is the original book in the series, now revised and including the crew debriefing (my favorite part, as I keep saying) and other materials, including a Jim Lovell interview on the accompanying CD. I don't know what I can say about this volume that I haven't said about others in this series. Apollo 8 was a key step on the way to the moon and probably the riskiest mission in NASA history. This provides a valuable technical background to the mission and a useful accompaniment to more human-oriented books such as Jim Lovell's Lost Moon or Andrew Chaikin's A Man on the Moon.

Don't miss the point: this is a collection, not an edition. 5 by .. Evan Machlan (New Jersey)
Reading these Apogee books is like leafing through a thick stack of mimeographs. Robert Godwin's decision to leave the documents essentially "as-is" (leaving spelling and punctuation errors, for example) and to publish as much relevant material as he could find in the archives (similar, but not identical reports) allows you, the reader, to process the information yourself, as if you had gone to the archives to do research. If as a reader you are uncomfortable with the idea of developing the narrative on your own out of this raw material, these books may not be for you.

Product Description

This third edition of Space Mission Analysis and Design, known as `SMAD' to its many friends, carries on the tradition of the first two editions of providing a practical handbook for `Space Mission Engineering' -- the process of defining mission parameters and refining requirements to meet the often fuzzy objectives of a space mission at minimum cost and risk. We begin the process with a `blank sheet of paper' and carry the reader through a preliminary mission design covering all system aspects: orbit and constellation design, mission geometry, launch vehicle selection, and design of the spacecraft, payload, ground segment, and operations. The book is a comprehensive presentation of theory and practice, drawing on the insight and practical knowledge of leading experts from all segments of the aerospace community. SMAD III both updates the technology and provides a greater emphasis on the design of smaller spacecraft and the process of reducing cost. It has been expanded to include more detail of multi-satellite manufacturing and the design and selection of constellation parameters. The discussion of space computers has been expanded and revised. The unmanned spacecraft cost model has been updated and the new Small Satellite Cost Model has been added. The discussion of payload design has been extensively revised and expanded. Discussions of electric propulsion, autonomous systems, on-board navigation, and the use of commercial PCs and COTS software have been expanded in keeping with current trends in system design. The appendices and tables have been made even more extensive and useful. Because of its practical orientation, useful data and formulas, and process tables which summarize the design methodology of all major mission elements, SMAD has become the most widely used volume in astronautics. It is intended for both students and professionals in astronautics and space science. It is appropriate for engineers, scientists, and managers trying the obtain the best mission possible within a limited budget and for students working on advanced design projects or just beginning in space systems engineering. It is the indispensable traveling companion for seasoned veterans or those just beginning to explore the highways and by-ways of space mission engineering. Enjoy!

space mission analysis and design 3 by .. Lawrence Rosenman ()
The third edition falls short of the information provided in the second edition. The third edition lacks the detail on thermal radiation and conditions that was included in the second edition . ( see chapter 11.5). It appears to me that the 3rd edition is more a generalization and discussion, rather than providing a detail method of analysis for a space mission. If possible , I would like to return my copy of the 3rd edition for a copy of the second edition. Thank you. L. Rosenman

My Most-Used Astronautics Reference Book 5 by .. BookWormJDC (Denver, CO)
Over 5 years as an aerospace engineer at Boeing and Lockheed Martin, I have used this book far more than any other for astronautics. This is not only an excellent reference, but a good textbook, in fact the only textbook required for my entire Master's degree. Many engineers simply say "look at Wertz" to find whatever answers you need.

A great book for understanding spacecraft systems. 5 by .. Phil K (Washington D.C. metro area)
This is essential reading for anyone who works in the field of spacecraft hardware regardless if it is at the component level or the spacecraft level. This book adequately presents an overview of each of the subsystems that comprise a spacecraft. Indeed much of these systems are similar for payloads as well just in a scaled down version. Information is provided in such a way as to efficiently teach how these subsystems interact with each other as well as how the requirements flow down from the top mission or science level requirements into the detailed functional and performance requirements. This book captures the interrelation of the programmatic requirements of budgets and schedules in helping define what technical solutions are implemented for the aforementioned mission or science requirements.

This book will help all spacecraft mangers get a top level view of various subsystems such that he or she can make adequate trade studies. This book will help the systems engineer communicate requirements across the subsystem interfaces. This book will help the subsystem and component level engineers understand how the interfaces of their work carry over throughout the spacecraft as well as to understand the inputs that go into their specific area.

Product Description

Lost in the glare of Apollos success, the Gemini program is often forgotten. Without the ten successful manned Gemini missions NASA could not have accomplished Kennedys seemingly impossible goal of landing a man on the moon in the 1960s.

Gemini 6 was the fifth manned flight of Americas two-man spacecraft. Aboard were Commander Wally Schirra and rookie pilot Tom Stafford. Their original mission flight plan was to attempt the first ever docking and rendezvous in space, an essential step if the pilots flying Apollo would ever be able to meet up in orbit around the moon.

The Soviet Union had claimed the first space rendezvous but many felt that unless the pilot was in control and able to maneuver around the accompanying vehicle it could not truly be called a rendezvous.

On October 25th 1965 the target vehicle, known as Atlas/Agena failed to make orbit and so the crew of Gemini 6 were suddenly presented with a totally revised and audacious flight plan. The long duration Gemini 7 mission was already scheduled for launch and so the crew of Gemini 6 were told that NASA would attempt a double manned mission and rendezvous.

This was undoubtedly a risky proposition which would stretch the NASA infra-structure to its limits.

On December 15th 1965 ace pilot Schirra and rendezvous maestro Stafford closed to within a meter of Gemini 7 and America was one step closer to the moon.

Includes: Windows CD-ROM featuring :
Over 50 minutes of 16mm film footage of Gemini 6.
Over 180 still pictures from Gemini 6.
Two movies about the Gemini program. Nearly one hour of MPEG video.
An exclusive interview with Gemini 6 Commander Wally Schirra.
The NASA Mission Reports is a series of books that will include all of the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Skylab, Space Shuttle, International Space Station and Selected Unmanned Missions.

Gemini the R & D Flights for the Moon Landing 5 by .. Franklin H. Neal III (Castle Rock, CO USA)
Gemini is the often forgotten program. Mercury proved man could survive in space, and Apollo landed us on the moon. Gemini is the series that proved and developed all the technology for the trip to the moon. Wally Schirra and Tom Stafford were two of the best. Gemini 6 was the mission that that performed the rendezvous with Gemini 7. Beyond the press kit, operations reports, and post flight debriefs are the Houbolt memos. These were the memos that John Houbolt wrote to NASA management arguing for the use of lunar orbit rendezvous. Many people thought that even the suggestion of this was no more than a crazy stunt. It ended up being a mix of Earth obit and lunar orbit rendezvous that got us to the moon. This was the perfect inclusion in the book that shows us the mission where NASA first figured out how to bring two ships together in orbit.

Addendum on Lunar Orbit Rendezvous 5 by .. Kevin W. Parker (Greenbelt, MD)
I completely neglected to mention in my initial review that this fascinating little book includes some of the key memos and reports covering the decision to implement the lunar landing using lunar orbit rendezvous (LOR). Those familiar with the history of Project Apollo will know that John Houboult, a middle manager at NASA's Langley facility, put his job on the line by writing a letter to NASA Associate Administrator Robert Seamans, skipping at least half-a-dozen layers of bureaucracy in a desperate attempt to get someone to address the issue. Well, you will find that memo here, followed by von Braun's report acquiescing that LOR is the way to go.

Getting ready for the moon 5 by .. Kevin W. Parker (Greenbelt, MD)
Gemini 6? What's the big deal about Gemini 6? One word: rendezvous.

Before Gemini 6 (and 7), no two spacecraft had met in space. For the moon missions, which required not only a meeting in space but a meeting in lunar orbit, this was a critical issue. And space rendezvous is a far from simple process. If you're behind someone in orbit, you'd think you could blast your rockets and zoom ahead. No, if you do that, you just put yourself in a higher orbit and get farther behind. The paradoxical solution is to slow down, get into a lower, faster orbit, and catch up that way.

But enough technospeak: the bottom line is that it's tough, and Gemini 6 was to be the first. The original plan was to use an Agena. When the Agena failed, then the target became Gemini 7. And that almost became a problem when the Titan II launch vehicle for Gemini 6 shut down right at liftoff. Only Schirra's cool hand, staying off the abort switch, made a successful launch possible a few days later.

You can find all this information in this excellent book. It has the press kit, the pre-launch briefing for the NASA administrator, transcripts of press conferences, and, most interesting for me, the post-mission debriefing with the astronauts - something never before shared with the public. You get to hear what Wally Schirra really thought of some of the decisions made by McDonnell Douglas (the spacecraft manufacturer) and NASA management.

In addition to the fascinating text, there's also a marvelous CD. It's advertised as Windows-only, but I didn't have any significant problems accessing it (via Netscape) on my Macintosh. It's got movies from the mission, a ton of still photos, and an interview with Wally Schirra. I've only checked out part of it so far, so I can't comment too much, but what I've seen has been very interesting.

I look forward to acquiring the rest of the books in this series. Highly recommended for those with a strong interest in America's space program.

Definitive Techno-Soul? 5 by .. Chris Moore (Hants, UK)
Some hailed this the Detroit Techno... hell simply THE Techno album of the nineties. This is no overstatement, nor is it frivolous marketing hyperbole. Juan Atkins really achieved something here, from the swirling and provocative opening pads of Milky Way, through the lush vocals of Ashia Jamel on The Flow; the quirky minimal spatial electro of Last Transport and the utter perfection that is I Wanna Be There (a somewhat repetitive, but oh-so trippy up-tempo arse-mover that surely must be the highlight of the album). Deep Space has it all. Sadly at only 50 minutes I can't help but feel one or two more tracks would have made this even more essential (the original mix of Sonic Sunset... where is it!?). No matter, what there is here, is enough.

LA Synthesis have continued the trend with Matrix Surfer, and UR gave us Jaguar. Global Communication gave us 76 14 and Bola gave us Soup (this one is about on par I would say, but for different reasons). All wonderful albums, but of all the releases of this particular decade - Model 500's Deep Space is the one that all Detroit fans (at the very least) should really own.

Jake and Nog's Adventure 4 by .. ()
Jake and nog live on a space station called Deep Space Nine. They love to play space arcade games. A bird like alien offers them a job playing simulation games on another planet. The boys find out that not everything is what it seems. Their adventure soon turns to a nightmare. Will Jake and Nog ever see Deep Space Nine again? The characters seemed silly. The plot was weak. It didn't grab my attention at the beginning of the book. I had a hard time finishing the book. I wouldn't recommend this to others. Other books by Kim Antilles: The Star Ghost, Arcade, Starfall, Nova Command.

The Highest Score Ever 3 by .. ()
My book is the Highest Score by Kem Antilles. The two main characters are Nog and Jake. Nog and Jake go to the arcade every day and play a game called the Simulator. The Simulator is a game that you have to save Deep Space Nine from a bomb. You start a very long way away from the Deep Space Nine. You also have to avoid obstacles like aliens, and meteor showers. Not even professional piolets can beat the game. Can Nog and Jake do it? You have to read the book to find out.
