Great Buy 5 by .. An Vo (New York, NY USA)
Bought this for my boyfriend (who is a sneakerhead) and he loves it. High quality print, bright pages, covers many of the classic brands and at an excellent price - best price I've seen for this book and I've looked for it elsewhere. Definetly recommended.

Great guide, but NOT complete. 4 by .. N. Nguyen ()
This is a great compilation of the shoes that make up the ever expanding sneaker culture. But it is by no means the COMPLETE guide. Lots of great shoes that didn't make it into the book and some that should have been left out. All in all, it should definitley be in your collection.

A Fairly Comprehensive Look at Sneakers 5 by .. Philip Higa (Aiea, HI United States)
A great look at most of the shoes in each of the major companies respective ranges. While the descriptions and info on the shoes are pretty scant, the pictures more than make up for that. The best part of running through this book is getting hit with the nostalgia that comes with seeing so many products from the not-so-distant past. A nice modern coffee table (or ottoman, I suppose) book. Air Max 1s are the best shoes ever.

A thorough and well presented history. 4 by .. onesam3-19 (Australia)
This book is great to look at even if you're not into sneakers. Beautifully presented design and layout, and great history details. A good oversight of all the significant brands and their best creations.

asset to hiphip culture 5 by .. Denise Torres ()
this book is awesome is very informative, and if you know anything about the hip hop era then this book should be added to a persons collections.

The fascinating story of the enemy brothers behind adidas and puma, whose rivalry shaped the modern sports business

Adidas and Puma are two of the biggest global brands in sports, paying stars, clubs, and competitions to show off their labels in stadiums and across magazine pages.

In Sneaker Wars, journalist Barbara Smit reveals the dramatic, character-driven story of these two power-houses. Started in their mother's laundry room in Germany, Adi and Rudi Dassler's shoe business was an instant success, their spikes worn by Jesse Owens in the Berlin Olympics. But a vicious feud soon pulled them apart: by the end of World War II, the brothers split the company, dividing their family and hometown.

Adidas and Puma revolutionized the world of sport, their rivalry introducing behind-the-scenes deals and multimillion-dollar contracts. From Pelé to Joe Namath, Walt Frazier to Boris Becker, Muhammad Ali to David Beckham, they all contribute to the roller-coaster rise, near collapse, and revival of the two brands. A page-turning narrative, Sneaker Wars is a riveting blend of family drama, business, sports, and history.

Amazing shenanigans 2 by .. GP The Engineer ()
Great technical background on the family issues, but after reading i felt as if i had sat through an Adidas marketing presentation. So much of the competitive side (Nike/Reebok) and the financial collapse was glossed over as no big deal. Nike ate their lunch by being a better company, and despite all the immoral and illegal acts by the founding family they couldn't hold on.

So-so 2 by .. rs ()
The book was ok but I felt that it read like an camouflaged advertisement for Adidas. The author was clearly one-sided. It also seemed to go into irrelevant details and was boring at times.

SNEAKERS WARS 5 by .. Anne M. Ebel (Denver)
Most fascinating account of a family and the business that they started in a small community that reached such great heights. Especially interesting to me, because of a few day's visit to the German town of Herzogenaurach and nearby Army Base in Bavaria, several years ago.

I love it! 5 by .. Ricky Jones Jr. ()
the book was in great condition and I am enjoying reading it! Thank you so much!

A View into the world of sports shoes and attire 4 by .. Blue Roses (Rocky Mountiains, United States)
Between the pages of this book lie the family saga of two brothers who ended up being torn apart due to war, personality and family. There is not really a happy ending although there is reconciliation among the posterity. Developing a better shoe and running a company are not necessarily the same thing as the players find out in this biography of two major shoe giant companies: Adidas and Puma. Although the book was good, it felt tedious and drawn out in place. I'm sure the author was trying to make sure that all the major players were included but maybe some of them should have been left out in the editing process. This was an interesting read into the world of sports and the attire accompanying the players and teams. Look for everyone from the soccer great Pele' to David Beckham and Joe Montana. I did appreciate the thoroughness that the author devoted to this work.

Silly, lovable, STINK! l 5 by .. Karen (Connecticut)
My 8yr old son love Stink and all of his funny adventures. He laughs at the book and loves the characters. Great fun for kids to keep them interested in reading.

Getting grandbabies to read 5 by .. N. Lambert (Oakwood,, IL USA)
These books are marvelous for getting your grandbabies to read ...I pretend I don't have a clue about STINK and they also EXPLAIN to their less than with it Grandma WHAT the book is about ...I'm a firm believer in READING and these help me create an atmosphere of pleasure while reading for my girls.

Good book- my son's first chapter book 5 by .. CCGal (USA)
We purchased this book after my husband found it in the children's department. Our son fell in love with the Stink character immediately and wanted more of the books. Unfortunately there are only three published so far, and he is eagerly awaiting the next book. While he doesn't read them by himself yet (5 yrs old) he can't wait for the next chapter. There are enough illustrations to keep his interest and enough character development to let his imagination fly.

Teacher's Grade: B 4 by .. N. Bilmes (Vernon, CT United States)
My sons (8 and 11) both enjoyed this book quite a bit, so I read it myself. At first, I was put off by the awkwardly edited sentences, but as the book went on I realized that the story was pretty good, the characters inviting, and the computer-drawn pictures lively.

Due to the choppiness of the sentences I won't read this aloud to my students in 2nd grade, but I will certainly add it to my class library and recommend it to some less-advanced readers who are eager to tackle a chapter book.

Stink is as happy as a pig in slop. 5 by .. Kidsreads.com (New York, NY)
Stink is as happy as a pig in slop. He and his friends, Webster and Sophie, are on a class field trip at the science museum --- and the exhibit is called "Gross-Me-Out: The Wonderful World of Smelly Stuff." Stink starts with the giant nose, where he gets to gawk at enormous nose hairs and learn how boogers are made. He loves it!

But when Stink's teacher, Mrs. D., dares him to experience the "Everybody Stinks" exhibit, he has to summon up his courage. After all, no one else will even go near it. One whiff of the B.O. scent almost does him in, but he recovers long enough to sniff more smelly odors, including dirt, rotten eggs, skunk scent and perfume. It appears that Stink has a real talent for smelling. He can smell better than anyone else in his class. In addition, he learns tons of smelly facts.

At lunch, the kids read flyers about a stinky sneaker contest the museum is putting on. Naturally, Stink must enter. Others are interested as well, so he'll have plenty of competition.

At home, Stink demonstrates The Nose and even impresses his big sister, Judy Moody. Stink is confident that his Nose will make him famous someday. When he researches the science of smelling, he finds information about the corpse flower, the world's stinkiest blossom, rumored to smell worse than outhouses, dead elephants and rotten fish.

Stink is inspired to create some terribly stinky perfume and sets up a Franken-stink lab. He and Sophie work up a recipe (including toilet water, dead-flower water, pickle juice and more), but he's distracted when Sophie tells him she's planning to compete in the stinky sneaker contest. Stink is determined to win.

He's positive that his reeking old sneakers have a great chance to win the competition. But his plan is foiled when Judy deodorizes them with sweetly fragrant powder. What is he going to do? He can't pour anything (like his stinky perfume) in them since the rules say the shoes must stink from being worn. Can his entry be saved?

In a startling turn of events, Stink saves the day when misfortune strikes the contest. He also gets to meet a professional smeller who has actually sniffed a corpse flower. It all makes for a happy (or at least smelly) ending.

This is another enjoyable book in the Stink series, sure to appeal to young readers (especially to boys who are enthralled with the grosser aspects of life). As always, author Megan McDonald manages to tickle readers' funny bones, slip in a little subtle education and tell a good story.

Wonderful Seaside Story for Little Ones 5 by .. Gentle Reader ()
A sweet and simple story with beautiful pictures. Perfect for a small child who has a cat (or would like one...) or who visits the beach (or would like to...).

Great ilustrations and a nice story. Great for any child that loves cats and animals.

Superbly illustrated gift for seaside cat lovers 4 by .. Angela Cater (Manchester, UK)
I was somewhat disappointed with this story which is quite slow and dull. Any cat on its first trip to the seaside would surely find a lot of smells, sights and sounds to excite and overwhelm it, but Sneakers seems to quickly move on from everything he sees and is either bored or a little scared of it. Despite this, he dreams about the seaside on the journey home. What makes the book special is Ann Mortimer's exquisite illustrations. She really makes Sneakers come alive and the depictions of the sea, the shell creatures met, the seagull and the beach have a perfect sense of colour.

Great illustrations, but okay story. 3 by .. K. Kuncl (Nebraska)
While this book has beautiful colorful illustrations for any cat lover, such as my daughter and I, the story is okay. We were a little disappointed by the ending. It felt like there should be a little more to it.

However, the artwok is wonderful and fun for any child to look at.

A great gift for any child..... 5 by .. Patrick D. Goonan (Pleasanton, CA)
I was shopping extensively for an outstanding children's book one Christmas and was lucky enough to stumble upon this gem. As other reviewers have pointed out the illustrations are stunning and the book as a whole teaches an appreciation for nature and the wonders that can be found near the sea.

The story is good, but the illustrations bring the characters and scenery to life. The cat, Sneakers, is particularly charming and a big hit with children. Over a year after I gave this as a present, it is still this particular child's favorite book and as an adult I appreciated it.

There is some special intangible that comes alive through the combination of the author's narrative and illustrators ability. This is a book that you can't go wrong with and that you can appreciate as an adult.

Your child will also learn a lot about the sea and beach and be able to identify with the curiosity of the main character. This is a nice launching point for the imagination and good two-way conversations.

The illustrator makes the book... 5 by .. P. Donahue (Long Beach, NY United States)
I've been a fan of Joe Mathieu's work since I read "Big Joe's Trailer Truck" as a kid. And when my brothers bought "The Giant Book of Strange but True Sports Stories" (both first & second editions) I would sneak into their bedroom and lay around reading both of them, admiring his illustrations for hours. Now I'm happy to say my 18 month old son enjoys his work as well, with the Gnu House being a particular favorite! This book is so clearly illustrator-driven, there are few who could handle such wacky sentences with such style and fun as Mr. Mathieu.

FUN AND ADORABLE 5 by .. silky69 ()
This is an adorable rhyming book about what animals don't do (example: rabbits don't sunbath on a beach, frogs don't catch a cab on a date, bears don't have bathtubs in a cave, etc.). At the end, you get to decide what animals can do in your imagination and dreams. It's written by the author or the series, If You Give a Moose a Muffin/ Mouse a Cookie. The rhymes are great and the illustrations make it all the more fun. It's just an all around silly and fun rhyming book to read to your child. Great book!.

animal behavoir 5 by .. K. Sokol (Gilbert, AZ)
Do animals wear clothes, take baths or have jobs? Find out in this delighful humorous book with hilarious illustrations that rhymes as it goes along. Enjoyable to read and perfect for little ones that loose interest quickly.

Good and bad 4 by .. ()
I'd rather give this a 3.5...

Good: Charming drawings, fun whimsicality, nice rhyming

Bad: Storyline kind of dropped in and out for me. First it was about what doesn't happen "dogs don't wear sneakers", then it was about imagining things that don't happen and finally it mentioned dreaming. It just didn't quite flow for me.

A WONDERFUL book by a great author 5 by .. Sussya (Southern United States)
My kids love Laura Numeroff books anyway, but this has to be one of their all time favorites. My two-year-old quotes this book all the time, and if we ever want to make her laugh, we just recite a few verses. It is perfect for bedtime, and one that definitely belongs in every child's library. The illustrations are wonderful, too.

When Rod Allbright's cousin Elspeth arrived for a visit the day afterschool let out for the summer, Rod thought his vacation was ruined. Butafter they are kidnapped to Dimension X by a monster named SmorkusFlinders, Rod realizes that Elspeth is the least of his problems. Afterall, what's a bratty cousin compared to cranky monsters, furious aliens, and the discovery that you are stuck in the middle of an interstellarpower play?

And that doesn't begin to take into account the horrifying personaldecision that Rod will be forced to make before his adventures are over.

Customer reviews

I Left My Sneakers in Dimension X 4 by .. Anna M. Ligtenberg (Chicago)
ISBN 0671798332 - The Covilles do it again. Every time I pick up a book with this pair's names on it, my expectations are not high - they always make me regret my assumptions!

Rod Allbright's summer is off to a terrible start: his cousin Elspeth is being dumped on them because her parents want to "get away". Obviously, they want to get away from Elspeth, who is quick with a negative word on every subject and every person she meets. Desperate to get away from her, too, Rod tells his mother he's going for a walk. Of course, his mother makes him take along Elspeth. Out of spite, since he's basically forced to take her, he wears his new sneakers despite the fact that he knows his mother doesn't want him to.

In the field behind the house, everything takes a sudden turn. The kids fall into a huge footprint, which is scary enough. It gets scarier when the foot that made it comes back - and the owner of that foot kidnaps the cousins! Taken to Dimension X to be used as bait for Grakkar, the commander of the Ferkel, and his crew, Rod and Elspeth have to work together to survive until rescue arrives. When it does, trouble really begins. Their kidnapper, Smorkus Flinders, has far bigger plans than they could ever have imagined and he must be stopped.

This is the second book in the series (the first was Aliens Ate My Homework), but it's not 100% necessary to have read the first one. It might help, since the story DOES refer to the previous tale, but it is possible to read this one without ever having read the first. Of course, the cliffhanger in this one is destined to have you looking for the next one!

I liked the references to Dr Suess (Thing One and Thing Two) and the classic The Sound of Music. It had me reading closer than usual to find other hidden gems. Probably the best part of the book is the lesson Rod learns about why Elspeth is the way she is - and it isn't because she's just a rotten person.

smart, witty book 5 by .. ()
Have you ever been transported to another dimension? Do you know what it feels like to be shoved into a forty foot monsters ear and eat kispa-dinka evernight? If not, then i suggest you read this book to find out more about this crazy life. During his adventures, Rod and his bratty cousin elspet are captured by smorkus flinders, a giant alien seeking revenge on Rods alien friends. When rod is reunited with his friends in dimension X, they face a whole new problem. How to get out. Throughout their encounters they meet up with crazy shapeshifters, a ting wongovia, and many other strange things. In the end Rod is enlarged and put up in a battle againse Smorkus Flinders and wins. He then finds out that the reason his dad had left them is because he was an alien. This book is a very good book, but an easy read. it is wild, wacky , and witty. it is well written and should be enjoyed by children of all ages.

The first thing i liked about this book was the overall obscurity and wackiness of the settings and characters. I mean, really, whos ever heard of a ting wongovia? It was characters like these that brought the imaginative aspect to the book. This book really provokes your mind to really think about what some of the things might look like and what it must be like to live there. This as a whole is what makes this book intersting.

Another thing that pleased me while reading this book was the vocabulary that was used to describe the scenes shown. While the settings were vivid, the vocabulary really helped bring alot of the settings to life almost. For example, the author used almost child-like vocabulary to describe this part of dimension X: "The sky looked like boiling purple water, the ground like a pot of overcooked macaroni." Sentences like these are peppered throughout the book, and really bring it to life.

The third and final thing that amused me about this book is the sheer simplicity, but also very complex plotline to the story. The book goes from very high points to very low points, and ends with a wonderful climax and a resolution with a big twist. This book is an easy read, so i dont reccomend it highly for adults, but the average high elementary through middle school age will enjoy its childish charm.

Overall, "I Left My Sneakers In Dimension X" by Bruce Coville is an intersting read, full of surprises, wackiness, and over cooked macaroni. This book should be enjoyed by children of all ages.

I Left My Sneakers In Demension X 4 by .. ()
I thought this book was very adventurous. All of the characters had their own great personality and unique look. The settings changed through-out the book. All places were mysterious and you never knew what wierd thing would happen to the characters! There were many main characters of the book. The most important character was Rod. All of the CRAZY events happend to either Rod or his little cousin Elspeth. Even if these two kids don't get along....they still get through this scary time together. Since Elspeth is pain (according to Rod), Rod learns that Elspeth can be nice. Also, Rod gets...oh yea, can't tell you!! Do you want to know what happens next? Read the book I Left My Sneakers In Demension X!!! It was a thriller!!!!!~Kerry:-)

Very creative book! 5 by .. ()
This is a wonderful book. When I first read it I enjoyed it so much that I read it again.Rod Allbright travels to another dimension in I Left My Sneakers in Dimension X.In this book Bruce Coville once again blew me away with his creativity.I cant wait to read more of Bruce Coville`s funny and exciting science fiction books.

Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher 5 by .. ()
A fine book. Very well written. A little less humorous than the Rod Allbright Alien Adventure Series, but that did not ruin the book. A perfect read for 4-6 grade. I was enthralled by the way Coville created a group of great characters, each with a distinctive personality, and each easy to love-or hate.

A fascinating and uniquely designed sneaker book! 5 by .. Kayatika (Texas, USA)
This interesting sneaker book showcases some of the most popular brands and designs from the 1940's to the 1980's. The information it gives about the sneakers is almost entirely taken from the marketing advertisements by the sneaker brands, and often it shows the printed advertisements themselves which adds to the value of the book by showing how the marketing of sneakers has evolved during the period it covers.

The design of the book itself is highly unique and makes the book one you'll want to leave on a coffee table or other prominent place due to it's beautiful colors and hot-pink shoelace on the binding which contrasts well with it's bright-green cover.
