If you are looking for a very technical book which outlines the various layouts you can use for a website, this is it. For my purposes, it wasn't very helpful.
I was looking for something to help me improve my design skills and this was definitely not the book. Nothing about design at all.

This book may simply be the best collection of proved successful web interface design patterns. It has no technical details but does has a rich collection of the state of the art patterns that can inspire web designer. Studying this book before actual writing any web interface code is highly recommended.

This book is amazing. It's big, but it needs to be. It comprehensively addresses all of the functional pieces of a website. It defines the problems, expands on the different solutions and offers alternatives and related problems to consider before deciding.
It provides extensive (color-coded) cross-references like a textbook, but does not use the fuddy-duddy language that is expected in textbooks. Easily understood explanations for the concepts fill the text and full color screen shots, illustration and diagrams are commonly included, helping to round out the ideas. It leaves little untouched or undefined.
This is a necessarily large book that should be required reading for anyone embarking into site design.

I bought the Design of Sites book about three months ago and have read about 250 pages of it so far. The book has full-color pages and is a great reference for design decisions. It covers topics for so many different types of web projects. It talks about design, usability, information architecture, and almost all aspects of the web. It isn't meant to be read cover-to-cover, but the amount of great ideas and design solutions it presents make it hard to only read it when you have an issue. Over 800 pages and a great appendix with sample usability evaluations and how to conduct online research will without question make you a better web designer/developer. I can't wait to finish reading it.

I am taking college courses for web design and I keep thinking to myself why they don't make this book a standard for the courses I am taking. This book is a wealth of information on any subject or problem that you might run into in designing a site for the client as well as the user. I may be quite selfish and want to keep the information about this book a secret, that is how good it is. I keep returning to the book over and over again to answer questions for my courses (that the required books) don't explain in detail. I think that says alot about this wonderful book. If you have any hesitations about buying it DON'T.

Every few often there comes a book that's so impactful that it influences the rest of your career; this is one of them. It was especially revealing to learn that front-end engineering is where the biggest bang for the buck is in terms of optimizing your site.
It's great how this book is in distilling the best optimizations to do for a website into 14 simple rules, that doesn't take up hundreds of pages; it really speaks volumes to the author's writing ability.
It's also an added bonus that the author provides the free tool YSlow to help analyzing your website. Overall I'm really glad I read this book :).

So you're web site seems slow, users have to wait a long time for pages to render. Is it time to start looking at your database, and webserver configs? Perhaps not, there's a lot to be gained by following a few simple rules in your front end.
This is a well written, well edited book with only a few minor editing issues. That makes it the best of many I've read recently.
So what's in this book.
The first two chapters introduce the problem and give you some background information about HTTP requests and caching which are useful to understand the next 15 chapters.
This book goes through 14 different techniques to improve the amount of time from the first request to the the completion of the page being rendered. Thus improving the perceived responsiveness of the web site.
There's a useful explanation of the difference between HTTP 1.1 and 1.0 with regards to how browsers (IE and Firefox) will limit (based on the standards) the amount of parallel downloads from the server.
The chapters are in order of highest impact to improve performance to least.
Here's the Chapter list:

Nearly every chapter had an "aha" moment for me.
The author worked on the Yahoo properties analyzing and suggesting improvements. It will come as no surprise that in chapter 15, where he looks at the top 10 US sites and analyzes which rules are and aren't being followed for those sites that Yahoo comes out near the top.
If you work on websites, front end or back end, it would be worth your time to read this book. At only 137 pages of content, it won't eat a hugh amount of time, and I think you'll find that your info/time to read ratio will compare favorably to many many other books.

I remember when I first started using the Internet. Dial ups were extremely slow at the time, so I'd type in a URL, then go make a sandwich. By the time I came back, hopefully the page would be loaded.
Today, we expect more. Often if a page takes more than a few moments to load, I don't bother. I tend to equate professional with quick. If a site doesn't load quickly or if parts of the page are slow, I naturally assume that the information provided might be as shabbily compiled. I simply move onto a different page.
High Performance Web Sites looks at how we can make our own websites load more quickly. I was surprised at how many different little things that can be done beyond optimizing graphics. Most of these things only take a few little nips and tucks and none were beyond my novice level of ability.

So this book is definitely a must-read for any front end folk. It shows how to make sites trim, slick and usable using some simple, sometimes common sense approaches that manage to elude the best of us before we read the book. Not only that, it provides a hierarchy of proven, scientific (maybe not in the traditional sense but certainly field-tested) hard evidence showing why the tricks are in the order they are.
This book and YSlow can definitely help make any site feel more responsive, and maybe shave dollars off bandwidth bills!

I have to admit something. When I joined my company, my department had been struggling with two big problems for years - poor programming hires and poor product documentation. This book helped answer the second problem.
When it came to documentation, nothing the group had created was easy to digest or effective to develop from. The resulting code was of low-to-middling quality. We'd tried SCRUM, Agile and most recently, RUP. Nothing seemed to work. So when I was tasked with redefining our documentation strategy (again), I was convinced I needed a book that would give me all the answers.
So, when I first got this book, I was really disappointed. It was NOT a book of examples or templates that we could use/emulate/steal. Instead, the book mixed design theory and principles with documentation deliverables. While it turned me off at first, I quickly realized the greater value - CONTEXT and VISUAL DESIGN.
What the book does best is provide valuable context when deciding which documents to create and for whom. This alone was a revelation. No longer did we have to follow some predefined, time-consuming and text-heavy format that no one will read.
The book essentially advocates that we take a visual design approach to documentation. I immediately had visions of documents that were as easy to understand as a picture book -- in almost a presentation-like format. This forced us to "Keep It Simple, Stupid" as we started re-defining our documentation - which leads me to the best comment I can say about the book.
This fall, I used the knowledge I gained in this book to convince my higher-ups on a new strategy that creates fewer documents, more visuals and saves time. Our work is more effective communication tools for business stakeholders and developers. We've created products that provide better results financially and programatically.
I'd also recommend attending a seminar at Dan's company EightShapes.
Excellent Handbook for Creating Documents by .. Denise Shanks (New York, NY)
This is an excellent handbook for creating all those design documents you'll need for communicating with others on your team. Each chapter is devoted to a single type of document and I particularly like the layered approach going from simple to complex. I've used it dozens of times in the last year.
While it is true that the templates on the accompanying website never appeared, you can find plenty of templates available through industry associations, such as the IAI's website. And with this book, you'll actually know what is what and how you use it.

I thought the book was quite good but was disappointed that there was no documentation on the website that was promised in the book. Not only that, but the book website had broken links and hasn't been updated in months and our requests have fallen on deaf ears... I've waited a year to write this review as I didn't want to jump to conclusions. So while I found the book an informative read I only rated it one star as I would not have bought the book if the documentation was never going to be made by the author. He has now asked the community to provide the documentation through the website...
It also bring up questions as to whether the documentation was ever used for actual projects or just to sell books. From the Book's website it seems to be the latter.

Only four stars because book offers no companion templates for reference. How could a book focusing on documentation offer no documents/templates for reference in this day and age? This guide to the biblical sites in Greece and Turkey is the product of many long travels (more than 10,000 miles just in Turkey alone) and first hand visits to the sites it covers. It is written in prose that is easy to read, has a helpful glossary of archeological and cultural terms not commonly used in daily life(such as agora, chiton, or megaron), an index, maps, charts, and lots of photographs taken by the authors. It gives information on the location of the site in question (e.g., "The site of ancient Pergamum is scattered in and around the modern town of Bergama"), its history ("According to the geographer Strabo, the earliest inhabitants of Ephesus were a group of peoples called Leleges and Carians,"), its biblical significance ("Derbe was one of the cities visited by Paul and Barnabas during their first missionary journey,"), and a step by step coverage of what a site visit is like (so that it pays to have the book open as you are walking through a place like Sardis, for example).
For the sites covered, the authors get very high marks. Their book is as good as it gets.
However, there are gaps in their coverage, especially in eastern Turkey. Time and again I found myself frustrated while traveling through eastern Turkey as I wanted to read about the biblical sites I was seeing and all I found was...nothing. No coverage is given to Mt. Ararat nor any space taken to talk about the different theories about where Noah's Ark might have landed (or the modern search for it - a real growth industry). No coverage is given to the Tigris River, the Euphrates River, or to discussion about the importance of the land between the rivers: Mesopotamia. (The Garden of Eden has always been associated with this region, not to mention much of the great action in the Old Testament.) Carchemish is not covered (either historically or biblically) and Harran is only mentioned long enough to say it won't be covered in the book. These places didn't even show up on the otherwise thorough map the authors made of prominant biblical sites in Turkey: the eastern part of their map is notable for its lacunae. I also found it curious that no bibliography was included in the book. Moreover, several names that appear in bold print in the text (presumably in bold print because they were significant people) fail to show up in the index (e.g., Alyattes, Amyntas, Androclus). It should also be noted that their attempts to describe some of the museums they went to resulted in errors (e.g., they got their rooms mixed up in describing the Antalya Museum and will confuse the reader if they try to use this guide while touring the museum).
In short, this is an excellent book with some disappointing lacunae in coverage. If you plan to tour the biblical sites of both Greece and Turkey, by all means buy this book: you won't be disappointed. If you plan to tour only western Turkey (where most tour companies work) then certainly this book will meet your needs. If you plan to tour any part of eastern Turkey, however, I do not recommend this book. Instead, I recommend Everett C. Blake and Anna G. Edmonds' book "Biblical Sites in Turkey". This book gives fine coverage of all the western Turkey sites while also covering the eastern Turkey sites not covered in Fant & Reddish's book. Moreover, it discusses The Seven Churches of Revelation (which oddly doesn't receive formal coverage or even appear in a chart in the appendix of Fant & Reddish's book), it covers many sites important for church history not covered in Fant & Reddish's book (Urfa (Edessa), Van, Mesopotamia, Istanbul, Gordion, Nicea, etc.), has color photos, suggested tours, a bibliography, is 184 pages long, and was last updated in 2005. To sum, go with the Fant & Reddish book for Greece and western Turkey and the Blake & Edmonds' book for eastern Turkey.
The Most Relevant Available by .. Carl Rasmussen (New Brighton, MN USA)
I have led 12 study tours to Turkey and Greece (University students and adult learners). I like this book so much that all the participants bring it along. Group members then read about the sites we will vist the night before and with the information supplied by F&R they are primed and well prepared for the next day.
The book is oriented toward biblical sites and the commentary and maps are very very helpful (I believe the best summary available). But for important non-biblical sites, such as Aspendos, Didyma, Troy (in Turkey) and Delphi, Olympia, Mycenae (in Greece) the book has little or no information. Also, travelers will want to consult other guide books, I like the Neos set, for important/essential non-biblical information on the countries of Turkey and Greece-classical matters, religion, politics, daily life, etc.
Finally, F&R is also useful for University classes in New Testament studies as it provides numerous insights to places mentioned there.

This author is trying to make money off of by selling a misrepresentation that PHP 6 was due out soon. It claims that PHP 6 was due out in 2008 but there was never a set release date or even target for PHP 6. In fact most of the features for PHP 6 has been ported to a version of PHP 5. This book is going to be a complete misrepresentation of the final product that PHP 6 will be. In fact there are more features in the upcoming php 5.3 that are hugely important (namespaces and closures) that were implemented in php 5.3 before they were even a twinkle in this books' eyes. I think I'll write a PHP 7 book full of bs and sell it for more money.

I have purchased several books, and have tried demo versions of software that 'build' sites for you, but my lack of expertise in PHP makes it impossible to edit or customize the generated sites for my purpose. For newbies (and not OOP geeks) looking to learn PHP, this book is excellent and well written and will probably be my last 'shot' at building the site that currently exists only in my mind. But as the 1 to 3 star reviews point out, it is definitely a learning tool, not a reference book. Also, it does take time to get used to the two column format and the small print - but the effort is well worth it. (You can download all the scripts and view them in a 'php text editor' of your choice - that definitely helps when reading the book). And the scripts have lots of comments so reading and comprehending what they are doing and how they do it is fairly easy to accomplish. To conclude, if you cannot learn the basics of PHP and MYSQL from this book, and put together a simple web site, then you (and I) should probably find another hobby!

The third part of the book rollback the wheel again to Common programming techniques illustrate using hidden form fields, paginating query results and making sortable displays, sending mails, file uploads, PHP interaction with HTTP through PHP headers, cookies and sessions , then chapter 12 dive into security methods like preventing spam, improving seesion security, SQL injection attacks and database encryption .
The fourth part of the book illustrate Perl compatible regular expressoins, and Making universal websites through Unicode for non english programmers and translitration, and discuss language and timezone with Mysql and working with locales .
The last three chapters (120 pages) for three real world application Message board, user registeration and e-commerce website that will wrap your mind around all the concepts for best programming practices of php .

Now a days, creating a web site is more about design than development; resources exist on the internet where millions of web developers will share their ideas and creativity for free - but how does one access it and where are these resources located?? This is it! The author knows his stuff, brings it into the learning forum in such a way that you are excited to read the next section and re-read for additional insights previously completed sections.
I am going to use this book, and will probably buy more by the same author/publisher.

Some of the introductions are a little dated (i.e. jokes that reference beanie babies, etc.), but the other content of the book is still pretty current. This is a really helpful book for the beginning web designer. It is definitely a good reference to have, espically for design students. This book covers things that appear in the software Dreamweaver. It discusses codes for things such as CSS, HTML, etc.

I love this series and normally give it a very wide berth and tend not to take it too seriously but rather regard it as a fun tool that provides a good starting off point. However, and with respect to the U.S. alone, the oversights are so glaring that I felt a need to add my two cents. When we're dealing with a country that in comparison with Europe and Asia that have two or three millennia's worth of history to draw back on, is so young that the TRULY historical places would seem obvious and somewhat limited, such exclusions are really inexcusable. Yes, most of the usual suspects are here, but check out those that were omitted. In no particular order:

I'm not implying that the aforementioned, which were, in fact, included in the book, are not in their own right historic, because they are. But to leave out places such as Independence Hall, where both the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution were signed or Ft. McHenry, the place that inspired The Star Spangled Banner or Ground Zero, the site of the most monumental act of terrorism on U.S. soil or the historic center and fortifications of the oldest European settlement in what is the now the United States is just way too much to allow to go by without comment. Again, I take these publications with a grain of salt but when it's no longer a grain but rather a boulder, then heaving it over my shoulder isn't quite as easy.
Mind you, I'm focusing exclusively on the U.S. No doubt glaring omissions are not limited exclusively to said country.

There are many reasons why World War I has been labeled THE GREAT WAR: it was the war to end all wars in the minds of those who lived through it, who were directly and indirectly affected by it, who continue to reference it as the war with the most emotional cost. In times when wars seems to constantly queue since that inception of world war, wars spreading from WW II, through Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf, Balkans, Eastern Europe, Spain, Africa, Iraq, Afghanistan, South America and on, taking a long hard look at the Great War will hopefully center our attention on a past time that can be analyzed and from which we can hopefully learn.
Now that Jay Winters' brilliant book 'Sites of Memory, Sites of Mourning : The Great War in European Cultural History' is available/affordable in paperback, every household should have a copy as children grow into the years of this century. Winters' examination of the devastation of WW I and the ways in which it informed all of the arts, the architecture, the literature, films, memorials - the people of the globe - is a mighty assignment and he is more than successful in humanizing his message. This book overflows with photographs of places, faces, bodies alive and dead, paintings, sculptures, film stills - each of which drives home Winters' powerful message.
Sad though it may be to admit, war is a part of life on this abused planet: the more we study it the more we hopefully will reduce it. Winters wants to make sure that we remember, that we read, view, walk through, see, hear, and listen to the remnants the Great War left behind. Not even the 'Great War' can Kill Tradition by .. Daniel Kane (Seoul, Korea)
Winter himself states in his introduction that he is a dissenter from the 'modernist' school of interpretation when it comes to the cultural legacies of the Great War. He's thinking notably about those interpretations rendered by Paul Fussell or Modris Eksteins who set out to show how the Great War transformed European culture - turning it away from past modes of expression and thought (patriotic certainties, 'high diction' in poetry and prose, high flown and hallowed notions about duty, honor, etc., and a classical esthetic) and towards new modes in all forms of artistic and cultural expression. The surrealist and cubist movements are commonly held examples, or the cryptic writings of Joyce or e.e. cummings. Though Winter does not, as he cannot, dispute such new cultural attitudes he attempts in "Sites of Memory..." to restore some historical balance to the equation. Basically he feels that in looking at the effects the experience of the Great War had on European society too much attention has been given to what changed, and too little to what remained, or at least to those aspects of Europeans' cultural heritage that were called forth as moral buttress to the overwhelming pain and loss of the war. Religious themes would be the most obvious example here. Winter looks at a variety of cultural expressions to find this traditionalism - graveyards, engravings, war monuments, books, cinema. On the whole he did help me rethink the war and did it in a very eloquent way. At times I found myself wondering if this debate over 'ancient and modern' concerning the effects of World War I wasn't stumbling over different definitions of just what 'modern' means. Winter's choice of exhibits in his case for the persistance of the traditional had me wondering when traditional remains traditional and when it becomes a modern reuse of the past. There is nothing new under heaven, after all, and even modernists by necessity must refer to the past to recreate their present. But more to the point, this book does make you think and that's always a good sign. It's a good read and I recommend it.

In this great book, all rituals for coping with the appalling losses of WWI and the everlasting effects over all forms of european cultural manifestation, are covered. But I strongly recommend that you read "Achilles in Vietnam" by Jonathan Shay. Where Dr. Shay treats the individual man, his suffering and eternal scars of body and soul; Dr. Winter jumps to the collective level. If the suffering of people in WWI sound distant to you, start by Achilles in Vietnam... Them imagine all that pain multiplied by millions..

Honestly I was very skeptical going into this book. I picked it up because a pastors group that I am a part of were going to be discussing it together. Going into the book I had a particular picture of what a multi-site church looked like and was pleasantly suprised and even found myself enthusiastic about the concept after just the first few chapters. It is great to see the many varieties of multi-site out there and how God is working in incredible ways. A definite must read for anyone considering multi-site ministry or for anyone who wants to get a different perspective on it. Good, easy, quick read.

The book is good, but comes across as a "how-to" manual, rather than as an opportunity to give testimony of the Lord's faithfulness. I'm sorry if that sounds cynical, but I'm not convinced that as Christians, passionate for the Lord's glory, we need that kind of approach as we seek new ways of creatively sharing the good news about Jesus.

A wonderful book that gets you thinking about a vital growth barrier- your facility. There is no one way to go multi-site, and I really like how this book shares the various different ways of expanding our church without either building a larger facility or starting another church altogether. I bought this book to help me better understand how to do grading, evaluate contours, etc. All well and good. I begin doing the problems at the end of a chapter, and there is no answer key anywhere in the book. Can't find any reference to answers anywhere.

I am a first-year BLA student, and this text is required for an introductory course in site grading and drainage. This book is very difficult for me to read and understand. Descriptions of calculations are very poorly presented in paragraph narrative, which is mind-numbing to read and comprehend. If the calculations were presented in a step-by-step format, like a math text, they would be dramatically more clear and understandable. I agree with a previous reviewer, as well, that the layout is dysfunctional because the text and corresponding graphics are not on facing pages. This problem is particularly annoying, considering that landscape architecture is a design profession that emphasizes legibility in graphics and presentation material. I would welcome anyone's recommendations for a text that explains this subject in a more helpful way.

Site Engineering is a difficult subject for many landscape students and designers, yet it is a very important aspect of landscape architecture. As a landscape architect, you probably do not have to produce a grading plan (it can be done by a civil engineer), but you do need to have some basic site engineering knowledge to be able to coordinate your work with civil and other consultants. You do need to be able to read and visualize an ALTA survey map, or a grading plan; you do need to be able to understand what a concave or convex landform is, what a swale or ridge is, how to read contour or spot elevations, etc.
"Site Engineering for Landscape Architects" will give you a very comprehensive knowledge of site engineering. It covers contours and form (constructing a section, contour signature and landform, characteristic of contour lines), interpolation and slope, grading constraints, grading design and process, earthwork, grading landform and architecture, storm water management, the methods to determine the rates and volumes of storm water runoff, natural resources conservation services, required detention storage, designing and sizing storm water management system, horizontal road alignment, vertical road alignment, and various case studies. It is so comprehensive that you can probably do a civil engineer's work after your read it. My suggestion is to buy this book, and look through it to have a general idea of what it covers and know where to find the information when you need it later. You can also look through the portions that you already know and focus on reading the portions that you are not very familiar with and improve your site engineering knowledge.
"Site Engineering for Landscape Architects" has 352 pages and many line drawings and interior black-and-white photos. It is a great site engineering reference book for architects, landscape architects, urban planners, and engineers.

I was a bit tentative when I started to use this text. The book has some minor editing problems, but if your desire is to really understand site design with an emphasis on drainage and grading plan design this text does the trick and does it well. I would recommend this book to any Jr. land development designer/engineer as a must have reference.
