Product Description

Legions of readers entranced by Twilight are hungry for more and they won't be disappointed. In New Moon, Stephenie Meyer delivers another irresistible combination of romance and suspense with a supernatural twist. The "star-crossed" lovers theme continues as Bella and Edward find themselves facing new obstacles, including a devastating separation, the mysterious appearance of dangerous wolves roaming the forest in Forks, a terrifying threat of revenge from a female vampire and a deliciously sinister encounter with Italy's reigning royal family of vampires, the Volturi. Passionate, riveting, and full of surprising twists and turns, this vampire love saga is well on its way to literary immortality.

I think I read it even faster than Twilight... 4 by .. Kathy Dyck (Oklahoma, USA)
I just couldn't stand for them to be apart...I remember how that feels, being in love like that and feeling incomplete without him, so I can relate even if he IS a vampire!! I did enjoy the developing friendship with Jacob, even if she selfishly led him on (she WAS fairly honest with him, I'll give her that). The reunion was almost anti-climactic after the terrifying visit with the Volturi, but I still found it satisfying. Anway, if you don't have the book handy to read, I would recommend NOT reading the teaser chapter at the end of Twilight!!! I did whatever I had to, to get my hands on this book and see what happened!

Review: New Moon 3 by .. Library Girl Reads ()
New Moon continues the story of Bella and Edward's relationship and the troubles that they face together or apart. I really want to enjoy these books but that is difficult when I don't like the main character. Bella is moody and self-absorbed through the entire book. She only decides to hang out with Jacob Black at the insistence of Charlie and to feed her need to hear Edward's voice in her head while doing stupid, dangerous things. Bella is very aware of Jacob's feelings for her but decides to use him anyway. Although the vampire family is not physically present for most of the novel, they are never far from Bella's thoughts and motivate many of her actions. Although I can understand the lure of the handsome, mysterious vampire I also think that most teenagers would have enough sense to understand the danger that the vampires (and other supernatural creatures) pose to a mere human. Instead of running screaming, Bella heads straight toward the danger begging the family to make her one of them.

I did greatly enjoy the section of the story when Bella is thinking about Edward and Jacob and is comparing her situation to Romeo and Juliet. It is clear that Bella is very aware of her actions and how she might hurt Jacob but she manages to rationalize their relationship. Despite knowing how many people she might hurt, Bella continues to forge forward with reckless abandon. I realize that teenagers can be full of angst, especially in first love relationships, however I feel Meyer pushes it a bit over the top in Bella. I do want to like her and these books but I am finding it very difficult to do so.

I will finish reading the series since I'm already halfway through and now I want to know what happens to Bella and Edward but unless Bella becomes more sensible and likable I doubt my reaction to the last two books will be more favorable.

New Moon 5 by .. B. Harris (California USA)
The Twilight Saga is one of my favorite series--well written and delightful to read. This paperbook version, though still large, is an easier size to hold, particularly while lying down.

The story was with Jacob, not Bella 3 by .. IdeoPhanthus (Upstate, NY USA)
I honestly felt that this book had more depth to it than the first book. There was alot of character development going on...almost too much. Because while the characters became more real (by getting to really know them), the plotline didn't really seem to move. At first I thought, "okay, I guess I can get used to Jacob being the focus". And as the book went on I really expected Bella & Jake to hook up. But as the book continued, I realized the string-pulling wasn't going to end. Jake was just going to keep warming up to Bella, and she was just going to keep leading him on. The story went nowhere until the very last portion of the book.

It was a constant struggle. The book was hugely about Jacob, but it was written from Bellas POV, so any plotline that could have developed via Jacob was unable to be adequately portrayed from Bella's POV. Jacob was growing attached to Bella, he was learning of his own fate, dealing with shape-shifting, no mental privacy from the pack, and so on. But all of that, which could have made for an interesting read if told from Jacobs POV, was overshadowed by Bella. All we got to hear was her constant whining. Eventually it just got old. I got tired of her stringing Jacob along, I got tired of her constant depression, I grew tired of the daredevil antics; it was a neverending cycle. All I wanted was for the plotline to move forward in an interesting way.

However, I can say that (like Twilight) the last portion of the book was very good. And while I understand that her depression & plight was necessary in order to paint the end scenario in the proper light, there was no need to drag her depressive nature & antics out through the whole book. It should have been; Edward leaves, we see that she has a major nervous breakdown, and then switch to Jacob's POV for the rest. At that point we know she's hurting significantly, and we can see her dependency on Jacob through his POV, while at the same time giving his plotline the main focus to keep the book interesting. The ending still would have had the same impact had the book went that direction, rather than keeping the primary focus on Bella.

In the end, this book was a more maturely written, but the characters didn't mature. The characters actually seemed to regress somewhat. Everyone was using each other for their own gains. Bella used Jake to make herself feel better. Jake took advantage of Bella's situation by trying to be the rebound guy & use that as a permenant "in". Charlie used both Jake & Bella; constantly pushing them together to keep Edward out of the picture. Sam & Billy were both constantly pushing Bella away once Jake started "maturing". The whole book would have worked out well & actually had some direction if it had switched to Jake's POV near the beginning, and then waited until the end to switch back to Bella (where she actually had a plotline again).

I enjoyed the book because it went really in depth with descriptions and came off as less of an adult novel. However, the way Bella acted, and the length that it went on for, was just really grating on my nerves. She just didn't have enough of a story in this book to warrant leaving the vast majority of the book dedicated to her constant whining and Jacob puppetry. She did have just enough interesting events to keep me reading, and just when I was about to give up on it picking back up, she'd have another small moment of interest just in time. In addition to that, Jacob's story made me enjoy the book, even if I didn't get to see it from his POV. However, that didn't make it any better, or me any more satisfied with the book. I did enjoy it despite her cyclic behavior, but there were definitely better ways to have written the book. When you've reached a seemingly dead end with a character, don't continue beating a dead horse...consider it dead & move on to a different character. The other character's POV can breathe new life back into the story, at which point you can come back to the "dead" character later on when they won't seem so dead anymore.

The end of the book did really make me interested in buying the third book, really hoping that I'd get to see more drama, ending with a little "changing" on Bella's part...and then hoping that book 4 would finish off the series by detailing her new life & discovering her new self.

Great story and characters, okay writer 4 by .. J. Myung (Harrington Park,NJ)
Story keeps getting better...her writing style is okay, a bit annoying at times but good enough.

A Great Read! 5 by .. Linn (New York, NY USA)
I absolutely love the Twilight Saga! I know this book was done with tweens in mind, but I'm way past my tweens and got sucked right into the series. It has been a page turner since the moment I picked it up. I read all 4 books within 2 months! I held onto to Book 4 - Breaking Dawn for as long as I could. I didn't want it to end. ;-)

Great story and characters, okay writer 4 by .. J. Myung (Harrington Park,NJ)
Her book...the story/plot and character build up keeps getting better than the book before...I just got annoyed with her writing...not that deep or "educated"...not your Thomas Mann but good enough that I'll pass along to my daughters when they come of age. The story is clean - perfect for young pre-teens/early teens.

Fantastic! 5 by .. Linda L. Nafus (Pioneer CA)
I couldn't wait to start this next book in the series and certainly wasn't disappointed. The books just keep getting better and more interesting. This one just like the last two are page turners. I was hooked on the first one and just can't get enough.

About three things I was absolutely positive:
First, Edward was a vampire.
Second, there was a part of him–and I didn’t know how dominant that part might be–that thirsted for my blood.
And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him.

“I’D NEVER GIVEN MUCH THOUGHT TO HOW I WOULD DIE– I’d had reason enough in the last few months –but even if I had, I would not have imagined it like this. . . . Surely it was a good way to die, in the place of something else, someone I loved. Noble, even. That ought to count for something.”
When Isabella Swan moves to the gloomy town of Forks and meets the mysterious, alluring Edward Cullen, her life takes a thrilling and terrifying turn. With his porcelain skin, golden eyes, mesmerizing voice, and supernatural gifts, Edward is both irresistible and impenetrable. Up until now, he has managed to keep his true identity hidden, but Bella is determined to uncover his dark secret.
What Bella doesn’t realize is the closer she gets to him, the more she is putting herself and those around her at risk. And, it might be too late to turn back. . . .
Deeply seductive and extraordinarily suspenseful, Twilight will have readers riveted right until the very last page is turned.

comparison 4 by .. S. Kreeger (New Orleans)
Well read by the narrator. You will probably catch something you may have missed when reading this book. Listening is much more engaging for the imagination.

Amazing book 5 by .. M. Donnelly (NYC)
I thought this was a wonderful book. Stephenie Meyer created a modern day Romeo & Juliet story. I could not put this book down. I even recommended this to friends who are not avid readers and they were hooked as well. Everyone seems to compare these books to the Harry Potter series. The stories are completely different. The only similarity to the HP series is the target audience. That's about it. I loved Harry Potter but it's a completely different type of story and should not be compared. Twilight is one of the best books I have read in a long time. I thought Stephenie's writing was imaginitive and speaks to a wide variety of age groups (not just the teen readers). This is not your typical vampire story. I liked the fact that it was not about vampires preying on humans. The Cullens are a family of vampires trying to fit into the human society (feeding not on humans but animals to survive). The main story obviously is Edward falling in love with a human girl, Bella. Edward and Bella are two people who are not supposed to be together but cannot be apart because they truly love each other. True soul mates fighting to be together.

Only romantics can properly review this series! 5 by .. Amazon Queen (Loganville, GA United States)
As someone always looking for a good book, I was shocked that I hadn't heard of this series until the movie trailers. Against all precedence, I saw the movie first. With prices today, I NEVER see a movie twice at the theater, but I did this one. I'm a mother of two nearly teenagers, and I placed their lives (and dinners) on hold while I read through the entire 4 book series. I can honestly say this is one of the best series I have ever read. One just simply cannot acknowledge that the book is for young audiences and then criticize it for those qualities! (are they averse to a clean, romantic love story?) Savor this series and then recommend it to anyone without reservation for offensive parts. How many books can you say that about? Thank you so much Stephenie Meyer!

Fun Read 5 by .. Emily Ammon ()
Twilight is one of those books I can pick up and literally just not put down. I never really was that interested in vampires to begin with, but when I was told to give it a try by one of my friends I didn't regret it.

Yeah sure, the writing is a little simple and corny and times but I think that's one of the reasons a liked it so much. Sometimes reading classic literature can get boring or stiff and sometimes you just want to read something that's almost like a guilty pleasure, something to just take you away from your boring day, because to be honest what girl doesn't want their own Edward Cullen?

Twilight is exciting and has a little of everything in it. If your looking for something fun to read then I defiantly suggest Twilight.

thanks for the memories 5 by .. L. M. Jaczko (NJ)
The 2008 baseball season was amazing for all Phillies fans. This book not only has great photos of the entire season, it also has great stories by the writers of the 2 main Philly papers. If you are a Phillies fan this book is a must have.

Worth the wait 5 by .. F. Pinto (Pennsylvania)
Being 24 years old now, before this season I had never seen a Championship team in Philadelphia. So, like many others around my age, I went crazy on October 29th, 2008 when Brad Lidge struck out pinch hitter Eric Hinske to win the World Series in 5 games (I was at the rain soaked Game 3 which didn't start until 10 and ended 2 AM-and there wasn't an empty seat in the stadium).

Anyway-on to the review. My point being is that this book perfectly captures the essence of appearing in, and winning, The World Series. Great pictures, great writers, everything that I hoped for the second the last out was made. As a Phillies fan for 24 years, I would have expected nothing less.

Best Book Available On The Phillies 2008 Championship Run 5 by .. James E. Bagley (Sanatoga, PA USA)
There have been a few books released on the Phillies championship run. This book is easily the best of those already available. The pictures in particular are magnificent. Sports Illustrated has always been known for their great photos, but the pictures in this book put those in the Sports Illustrated magazine and commemorative book to shame. Shane Victorino is my favorite player and the photos of him rounding the bases after his grand slam off Sabathia and then being restrained by his team mates after a ball was thrown at his head during the playoffs with the Dodgers are priceless. This will make a great holiday gift for any Phillies fan.

We WIN 5 by .. Gamer ()
Great book for all Phillies fans. Tells the story of the Championship run with great pictures. A Must Have!!! Have sone fun and send one to a friend

A champion book for a championship team 5 by .. LNG (Philadelphia, PA)
Finally Philly doesn't only have a Championship team, but also a spectacular book to commerate a fabulous year of the World Champions, the Philadelphia Phillies. This book, written by the Philadelphia Inquirer captures the raw emotion and the important details of this special team. I am amazed by the quality of the full color pictures - they pop out of the page - and you really feel the spirit and joy of this hard working team. I bought one copy for my family - but after seeing the book, we are now buying it for holiday gifts and for our former Philadelphia friends living elsewhere. This is a great deal and a beautiful keepsake. Enjoy.

I passed Woo Hoo 5 by .. Ellen Harbeck Podell ()
Just passed the 7 yesterday with an 88. Can't say it was all due to this book, this book does a great job of reviewing important information. It also gives you more information about what will happen when you go to test and how to work on test questions (the testing cd was an added bonus). I found that the formulas from this book were easier to use and memorize for some reason, especially when it comes to figuring accrued interest on secondary market bonds. For my main source of study I used a text book and cd testing system from Kaplan, and I supplemented that with CDs and DVDs from Pass the 7. This dummies book was very easy to read and understand.

I was a dummy for buying this book 1 by .. Ran Fuchs (NY, NY)
If you are serious about taking the Series 7 then this is NOT the book for you. Material and facts are outdated and poorly prepare you for the Series. I bought this book, Passing the 7 and I also took the STC class. The STC study material was by far the most useful and up to date of anything else I used to prepare....(STC is also more expensive).

The Missing Link 4 by .. Jeffrey W. Peterson ()
If you are studying for the 7 and don't get all the concepts then this book will fill in the blanks. Great, like all the "For Dummies" books.

Series 7 timeline 4 by .. Ben Weintraub (Oregon)
I just passed my Series 7 exam a few days ago, and it sure does feel good to have that behind me! I'll try and provide an accurate time line along with any details I can remember:

I started studying in late June. I bought this Dummies book, Pass the 7, and attended a Kaplan week-long class 10 days before the test. I think the Dummies book is a good start, but definitely not the end! I would recommend starting with that book because it is an easy read (I read it in two days!) Then I read the Pass the 7 book, which is a little deeper and much longer. These two books together work great!

I then took the Kaplan course which helped me a bit more. I think I was definitely the most prepared coming into and going out of the class.
Probably the BEST thing I got was a Kaplan CD FULL of questions. I probably took 15-20, 125 question tests in 10 days. This is what sealed the deal for me.

I was getting anywhere between 72-76% consistently, which left me a little worried because most people say you should be getting 80-85%.

Then came test day: I did very, very light studying on test day. I figured I wouldn't learn anything in the last hour I hadn't been able to figure out in the last 6-8 weeks. I got into the test and finished the first half at about my normal practice test speed: 50 minutes. I took the required 30 minute break plus a small 5 minute break right before that (oops!) I got back into the test after the break and continued at my usual pace. I felt pretty calm the entire time. Until the final button had to be pressed: Are you sure you are finished? 'Yes.'

I had put in earplugs because the girl next to me was taking the GMAT, I think, which requires typing. My heart was racing. You know when a cop pulls up behind and turns on the lights to pull you over? This was at least twice as intense waiting for the score!

Well, it turns out I got an 86%! Wow! I was so surprised!

Product Description

Dear Reader,

You are presumably looking at the back of this book, or the end of the end. The end of the end is the best place to begin the end, because if you read the end from the beginning of the beginning of the end to the end of the end of the end, you will arrive at the end of the end of your rope.

This book is the last in A Series of Unfortunate Events, and even if you braved the previous twelve volumes, you probably can't stand such unpleasantries as a fearsome storm, a suspicious beverage, a herd of wild sheep, an enormous bird cage, and a truly haunting secret about the Baudelaire parents.

It has been my solemn occupation to complete the history of the Baudelaire orphans, and at last I am finished. You likely have some other occupation, so if I were you I would drop this book at once, so the end does not finish you.

With all due respect,

Lemony Snicket

Great book, came in plenty of time for my purposes 5 by .. Kathleen H. Westwood (Bettendorf, IA)
This book came well within the time frame specified, in plenty of time for me to wrap and send out as a requested Christmas gift. It was in good shape and didn't smell, as some books have that I have purchased from others. The packaging was appropriate for the product and it arrived non damaged. Thanks for a great purchase!

An incredible ending to an incredible series 5 by .. E. Crites (Columbus, OH United States)
Clearly, this is not an ending that everyone "agrees" with. It's not terribly surprising, in fact Lemony Snicket has often warned his readers that those looking for happy endings should look elsewhere. But the main reason people seem to be dissapointed is that he doesn't unveil the meaning behind many of the mysteries that he's created. But that's what I like most about it. Most of the answers can be found if you simply read all of his books a little more carefully. For example, he doesn't say exactly what's in the sugar bowl, but if you read the Unauthorized Autobiography, and some of the other books that mention the sugar bowl, you can get a pretty good idea of what it contains. In fact this book gives a pretty big hint that most people seem to miss...

The bottom line is, if you don't appreciate The End, then you really don't appreciate any of the books. The whole point of the Lemony Snicket books is that it teaches us that, unlike fairy tales, there are very few happy endings in life. In fact there are no endings. Just a series of moments- some bad, some good. There are many mysteries in the world, and it's the most important ones that there doesn't seem to be answers to. That's what The End is all about. And that's what makes it so beautiful. Thankfully the big question is answered- you do find out just who Beatrice is.

In my opinion this is the greatest series of books ever written. Lemony Snickey (aka Daniel Handler) is one of the greatest writers alive today, and this book is proof of that. The End was never going to please everyone, no matter how he wrote it. It may not answer all of your questions, but it'll make you want to go back and read the series again to find the answers. There all there, you just have to look.

A waste of your time.... 1 by .. M. McPherson (South Carolina)
I have the complete set and have read each book thinking that surely the books would get better... unfortunately, I found that they were a complete waste of my time.

The events conclude with characters alive and fully realized! 4 by .. Todd Stockslager (Raleigh, NC)
I finished this late last night, having reached that point of no return (here meaning "that point where my need to know what happens at the end overwhelms my need for sleep") that all good mysteries, and most good books, will reach sometime before the last page.

Not all the mysteries are resolved, but the book ends, as most good books do, with the main characters not just alive, but fully realized and ready to live on to face more adventures, armed with their moral compasses and skills honed in the solitude of the arboretum and rested during the respite on the island alone with baby Beatrice.

Followed by: The Beatrice Letters (A Series of Unfortunate Events)--sorta. The letters are kind of supporting materials to the end game, which might be read before or after The End, that will be read by hard core fans but can realistically be skipped by everyone else without missing anything essential to the story.

An unfortunate end... 3 by .. CAreviewer ()
I was disappointed. I will admit I own all the books. I enjoyed the series. However, I guess I wanted more to this ending and actually all the books. He wants everything to be sneaky and unknown. Yet, I felt like there were so many unanswered questions and the explanations we did get were kind of, well, lame.

I am not sure whether to recommend it or not. If you are like me and have to finish reading a series once you have started them, read it. If not, well...you may not be missing anything.

exciting entry 4 by .. Harriet Klausner ()
The Sisterhood seven looks forward to their presidential pardon and the end of their self-imposed exile in Europe as they did their part of the bargain (see COLLATERAL DAMAGE). However, the pardon is delayed for political reasons when the president selects Bert Navarro as the new FBI director. No one wants his alleged abetting the Sisterhood to become the focus of the Senate advice and consent hearings.

Instead Myra, Annie, Kathryn, Alexis, Yoko, Nikki, and Isabelle are working a scenario in Las Vegas as a favor to a friend Beatrice. Her estranged daughter Marble Rose is on a roll at the casinos, which means those in charge want it ended anyway possible including murder. The Sisters and their lawyer Lizzie investigate what looks preposterous at first, but soon that turns into a network of corruption in which the betting line in Vegas is all seven and their attorney will be shortly dead.

This is an exciting entry although the overarching story line of receiving the pardon and life afterward never moves forward; many fans of the saga will be disappointed in that. Still this is a solid tale as the magnificent seven struggles through layers of obfuscation that politicians would cherish. As they dig baby dig deeper, their adversary counterattacks. In spite of some disappointment in the overall saga moving forward at a glacier pace, readers will enjoy FINAL JUSTICE wondering whether our side will lose this time as the opposition seems so much more powerful.

Boilerplate 3 by .. Walter R. Rodgers (Penna)
Author seems to be grinding these out since the unique retribution is now having the culprits shipped off to somewhere.

Final Justice 5 by .. Sylvia Pack (Lyman SC USA)
I love this book and can't believe that Fern Michaels is thinking about ending it here. I say No No I want more. Please don't leave us with so many loose ends that need to be fixed. So many loves are waiting in the wings and I know that she can find more people that have done wrong or been done wrong.
As always this is a wonderful read and I just love that the girls can do things that would seem impossibly but it always works out for them.
Please don't stop Fern.

Final Justice 5 by .. S. E. Olsen (Orlando, Fl)
Fern Michaels does it again with Final Justice. I could not wait till it came out and the book did not disappoint me. I loved it as I have loved the whole series on the sisterhood. I am now antispating her next release of the sisterhood series to see what happens to all of them.

Book Jacket vs Content left me bewildered. 2 by .. J. Wang (CA USA)
If you read the book jacket of the hardcover, it talks about a rival to the Post, a Rupert Murdoch type character. After reading the book, the contents have NOTHING to do with the description I read. Something seems to be off with this book.

It was an "okay" read. Parts of the story left me feeling it was a bit rushed and disjointed. I had to re-read a few paragraphs and pages just to make sure I hadn't skipped something.

A Hunger Like No Other (The Immortals After Dark Series, Book 1) 5 by .. C. Armijo (Albuquerque, NM)
In "A Hunger Like No Other", Kresley Cole does a great job of making the reader believe in the story line as well as the characters. She always keeps me on the edge of my seat, and I often stay awake until 2:00 am because I want to find out what's going to happen next. It would be an understatement to say that Kresley Cole is a creative genius. I'm never sad about going into work half asleep because I stayed up all night reading "A Hunger Like No Other".

Sometimes the first really is the best 5 by .. sanoe.net ()
As others have already left long and detailed reviews for this first book of The Immortals After Dark series, A Hunger Like No Other (The Immortals After Dark Series, Book 1), I'll keep my review short and simple and to the point:

I can totally see why this is the favorite of the series.

Like the other heroes in this series, Lachlain makes the story unlike the heroines of other installments, I really liked Emma who was uncomfortable in her sheltered skin but still managed to make Lachlain work for her.

Very enjoyable. If I had any quibble, it was that I didn't get enough of Garreth and Lucia but that's a minor quibble.

Why did I wait so long? 5 by .. Casey (Maryland)
This was in my TBR pile for a long time. I guess I didn't pick it up because I need a break in-between vampire/paranormal or they all start to blend together. I am up to date on the Black Dagger Series, the Midnight Series, and even the Lords of the Underworlds series, so after reading a few historicals I picked this up.

What a fun read! I liked the way the romance played out, and even though the heroine claimed to be timid and shy, she really wasn't and the way the book was written showed that. This was first published in 2006, so there are 5 more I need to read, looking forward to them!

A tip though, there is a glossary of terms in the back, that I didn't see until the end. It would have been helpful to see that at the begining as there was a lot of information introduced on the different characters!

Don't let the "cheesey" cover fool you - it's a good read.

Better than TV at least. 3 by .. SB (Palmdale, CA)
Ok so the accent that Lachlain has is a bit much, and Emmaline is annoying. This book was ok. It's not as good as JR Ward, no one is though haha. It's better than watching TV though, at least there's some adventure and they finally do get together in the end. I know I didn't spoil it, that's what always happens.

Like No Other? No Doubt. 5 by .. A. Russell (Tempe, AZ)
This book has probably replaced Jude Deveraux's masterpiece A Knight in Shining Armor as my favorite romance of all time. Kresley Cole's writing is seamless, the sexual tension builds to a fever pitch, and the love scenes?

Oh-my-gawd.

There is just so much to love in this book (and the whole series for that matter). Complex and loveable characters, a fascinating universe that begs to be explored, sharp and witty humor that employs the most hilarious pop-culture references, and...did I mention the love scenes?

I am thoroughly obsessed with the Immortals After Dark series and can't wait for the next volume.

After any harrowing struggle, it is nice to consider checking into a hotel for a rest. In fact, this might be just the break Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire could use after their wearying deep-sea adventure.

A hotel can be a good choice for any family vacation. With so many floors, such a variety of rooms, and a curious array of guests, spending time in the safety of the right hotel can be the perfect learning environment for children of any age. A keen researcher like Klaus, an adept inventor like Violet, and a sharp-toothed culinary master like Sunny are all sure to find engaging diversions during their stay.

Regardless of how they pass their time while at a hotel, the three siblings will be sure to take in all the interesting sights and sounds -- and write them down -- just in case this episode turns out to be the darkest yet in a series of unfortunate events.

Amazing Book 5 by .. ()
This book by Lemony Snicket is one of the best books that he has written in this series, in my opinion. It has a good plot to it, it's not confusing or boring, and it's not very hard to read either.

The plot is that three children are running from Count Olaf and end up getting a job at this hotel only to find out that he is staying at this hotel with a bunch of his friends. The kids have to get a disguise and work there without being caught.

I give this book five stars because it is just an awesome book for anyone who likes to read this series. This book is definitely in the top three books in this series.

The suspects are assembled . . . 4 by .. Todd Stockslager (Raleigh, NC)
The suspects are here assembled, as the participants, precipitators, witnesses, and victims of the unfortunate events described in the past 11 books gather . . . . But justice is miscarried in the penultimate event, and the Baudelaire children ponder their guilt or innocence, nobility or villainy.

Followed by: The End (A Series of Unfortunate Events, Book 13)

Twists are coming together 5 by .. Emily J. Taylor (Utah)
Ah, now nice! Our favorite little orphans-of-tragedy get to hang out with some rich relatives in a snobby apartment building! Snicket introduces a nice new landscape, more mystery, and some developments that are very nice shockers. Not the best of the series, but nice-enough pacing and a [not-so]-pleasant story to keep up the action and plot.

Complete fluff 1 by .. A. Lin ()
Tons of filler in this book.

Snicket brings back most of the characters for a courtroom showdown which means he takes every opportunity to use the following format:

"It's a bird!"
"It's a plane!"
"It's a hook!"
"It's a book!"
"It's a rail!"
"It's a tail!"
and on and on.

And also to spend whole paragraphs hashing over what everyone is doing, e.g.:

X was stumbling around and ran into Y who was hanging onto Z and they bumped into A who was still wearing the necklace she stole from B who was in the next room with C trying to blah blah blah...

Snicket can get more than an entire page worth of that stuff.

No good descriptions or plot developments, just list after list after list.

He does try to inject a subtext commenting on moral ambiguity but all that gets buried under the Snicket cliches of melodramatic crying kids (stop already!), wimpy adults who are too poorly written to be witty satires, idiotic evil villains and plot holes.

The kids are clever one moment and complete dolts the next.

Yup, by this point, I detest the characters and Snicket and this wretched story that never goes anywhere. The lit and linguistic winks don't even begin to compensate for the crappily crafted story.

I find it insulting how Snicket manipulates his readers. It seems like the kids tearing up and crying is directly proportional to the increasing crappiness of the stories. Since we're less sympathetic towards the kids because they a.) fail to learn from previous mistakes, b.) fail to seize opportunities, c.) repeatedly fail to use the brains they are reputed to have (for all the inventing skills, reading and life experience, you'd think they'd have a lick of common sense), Snicket makes them turn on the waterworks.

Disgusting.

I haven't had to skip this many paragraphs and pages since The Notebook.

Product Description

Dear Reader,

Unless you are a slug, a sea anemone, or mildew, you probably prefer not to be damp. You might also prefer not to read this book, in which the Baudelaire siblings encounter an unpleasant amount of dampness as they descend into the depths of despair, underwater.

In fact, the horrors they encounter are too numerous to list, and you wouldn't want me even to mention the worst of it, which includes mushrooms, a desperate search for something lost, a mechanical monster, a distressing message from a lost friend, and tap dancing.

As a dedicated author who has pledged to keep recording the depressing story of the Baudelaires, I must continue to delve deep into the cavernous depths of the orphans' lives. You, on the other hand, may delve into some happier book in order to keep your eyes and your spirits from being dampened.

With all due respect, Lemony Snicket

The GREAT Grim Grotto 4 by .. Charlton P. Collar (Virginia Beach, VA)
This is a great sequel in the series. Always leaves you hungering for more!

The Baudelaires grow up and grow closer 4 by .. Todd Stockslager (Raleigh, NC)
In which the Baudelaires, in my second-favorite book so far, grow up and grow closer together in genuine love, in the face of even more unfortunate events that they find themselves embroiled in. So much have they grown that the appearance of Mr. Poe is not a source of rejoicing or relief, but a barely considered event out of the center of their thoughts and lives.

Followed by: The Penultimate Peril (A Series of Unfortunate Events, Book 12)

Perfect 5 by .. Emily J. Taylor (Utah)
This is possibly the best book in the entire series, in my opinion. Maybe it's the fact that I'm a water baby. Or maybe I'm a sucker for geeky people. Or maybe I just think the mystery, drama, and humor in this one was excellent! Whatever the reason, this was a series highlight for me.

And to think it all takes place underwater on a submarine known affectionately as the Queequeg, where there dwells its captain and his ambiguous stepdaughter, characters that help drum out mysteries galore and some of the best characterizations I've seen outside the main people.

The description is better than anything previously written in the series, and the emotion and characterizations will zap you right in the heart. And to end it all with some more amazing cliffhangers.

I will always think of this particular installment with great fondness.

A bit slow 3 by .. Anna del C. Dye (Utah, USA)
A Series of Un-fortunate Events is good reading material for younger children. They probably will want to emulate some of the characters in the books, which would be fine... especially the calm and intelligent Violet. They are interesting stories and well written, I find some of them slow.

The Elf and The Princess: The Silent Warrior Trilogy - Book One (The Silent Warrior Trilogy)

One of the slower ones... 2 by .. A. Lin ()
Alright. I realize most people here are die-hard Snicket fans.

That said, Grim Grotto is where it starts to go downhill. It takes a lot more work to slog through than the other books. For one thing, this is a plot advancement book (finally!) with an abrupt cliffhanger ending rather than the usual clean wrap-up. The repetition is really obnoxious here (how many times does Handler have to copy/paste that essay about water stages?) and it's starting to feel like clever filler that cheats the reader out of substance rather than a narrative device.

There could be some good thrills and chills here but it suffers from too many irrelevant asides.

Come to think of it, The Carnivorous Carnival is looking pretty good in comparison. CC had meaty dialog that moved the story forward, suspense, surprise twists and emotional clout (bummer about the fortune teller).

If we were talking cheese, CC would be a punchy English stilton and GG would be a generic American cheese single. Or that shaky green wannabe parmesan cheese.

Rabid Snicket fans are gonna eat this up - just want to say that of the books, this is the one where I started skipping whole paragraphs and pages because Snicket seemed unable to get to the point. I think Klaus would have done the same.
