Great book for navigating your way on Amazon 5 by .. Ken and Norah Fritz (West Richland, WA USA)
This book has really opened our eyes on how to market on Amazon. It's a great community for both the buyer and seller. The book's main focus is how to expose merchandise to potential buyers. For example, check out the link below and you will see that we have written a radio directory for the traveler or PC operator. If you are an author, make your book visible with a link after writing a book review. See it works?! You know about our book, now people will know your book. With an avalanche of marketing ideas, this book has information on: writing an author biography, the usefulness of book reviews, author connect, the power of blogging, and creating lists on listomania. If these words are teasers, then read the book. Brent explains how Amazon is set up and by understanding it's infrastructure, you can accelerate book sales. It requires work but it's a worthwhile endeavor. Amazon is a little difficult to navigate but Brent Sampson's book is a chart to insure your books sales won't hit a rock. Rather, you'll be on course to becoming a best seller.

- Ken Fritz author of The United States Radio Directory: A Traveler's Favorite Companion 2008-2009

Must-Have for Anyone Selling on Amazon 5 by .. Jaimey Grant (Michigan)
This book is an invaluable tool for authors wanting some inside information on how the Amazon system works. Increased sales start with increased exposure and increasing your book's exposure on Amazon can be tricky. With tips and guidelines covering everything that was available at the time of publication--2007; some things have obviously changed--this book can help any author increase exposure of their print-on-demand or self-published work.

Brent Sampson has an easy-to-read, witty writing style that is refreshing in what basically amounts to a "self-help" book. He uses a simple ranking method to rate each tip he gives, 1 star=can be expensive & not recommended - 5 stars=inexpensive & highly recommended. He includes diagrams and figures and explains in simple detail each aspect of Amazon from the importance of each section on the Book Detail Page to the value of So You'd Like to...Guides. By implementing only a few of his suggestions, I have seen a marked increase in exposure to my own books (Betrayal, Heartless, Spellbound, & Redemption), as well as my profile page. I'm truly impressed!

Thank you, Mr. Sampson! 5 by .. Joseph L. D'Agostino (Hershey, PA)
The most beneficial tactic that I was inspired to incorporate into my publishing and marketing process was one that Mr. Sampson subliminally suggests pretty much throughout the whole book: Just do it!

Obviously, anyone who purchases this book is one who has a book that he or she wishes to publish. As such, that writer will more than likely be a newcomer to publishing, and perhaps be geared toward the "print-on-demand" method, as I was. Well, that's perfectly acceptable, and there is no dishonor in that. Your work will speak for itself; if it is worthy, if will merit acceptance.

Regarding the techniques and applicability of those techniques to the ever-evolving Amazon site, the new publisher simply needs to be on his or her toes and be flexible (for example, "Search Inside/Look Inside"). Being sharp and attentive, however, is expected of anyone who wishes to self-publish and self-market. Mr. Sampson, in his energetic way, prompts that approach. For me, this book was very informative, and it was a definite confidence booster.

Joseph L. D'Agostino, author of "Modern Music Systems: a new perspective on music scales, clefs, and chords"

For all authors, not only Print on Demand Self-Publishers 4 by .. LOTONtech (www.lotontech.com)
I stumbled upon the techniques described in this book myself, before reading the book. Contrary to what some reviewers have said, the techniques DO work -- as the sales rank of this book shows -- if only because "any publicity is good publicity".

Yes, in an ideal world, readers would inadvertently market your books via their Listmania lists, reviews, and so on; but you need to give the process a kick-start yourself as the author / publisher. Some readers might be put off by your self-promotion, but they would never have found your book in the first place without your own marketing efforts.

I think the techniques are legitimate, and not SPAM, providing you: DON'T review books you haven't read, DON'T include your book in Listmania lists of totally unrelated books, and DON'T engage in Sock Puppetry (pretending to be someone else).

As for the book itself:

The margins are wide and there are fewer words per page than most books. I wish I'd thought of that, as a way of increasing my page counts. The information is presented clearly, as you can see from the 'customer images' (which is another good marketing technique, and a nice touch).

Since it focuses on Amazon, this book is perhaps most relevant for authors who are self-publishing using CreateSpace -- because CreateSpace lists your books only on Amazon.com. Authors who have wider distribution (e.g. using Lulu) can think about how the same techniques apply to other retailers like Barnes and Noble. B&N have Essentials Lists, for example.

And now to explain the title of my review:

As Dan Poynter and others have noted in their books: even if you publish your book via a traditional publisher, YOU the author need to market your own book -- perhaps using these techniques. Unless you are already famous, most mainstream publishers will not market your book effectively. I know, because I've been there.

And now, my review would not be complete without:

Great for New Booksellers 5 by .. An Honest Reviewer (Detroit)
I read this book when I first started selling books on amazon and I had so many questions. This book answered them all in a simple, direct manner. I have read just about every book that comes out on the subject, and this by far is the most informative and well written. Who cares about the cheap plastic binding? It's the information inside that is important and in this regard, this book is a winner!

Getting this guide is like hiring a personal trainer and mentor. 5 by .. downeast bookseller ()
Yes, it's true that Amazon itself does a good job of being user-friendly for sellers, but for new-to-the-business folks like me, this is a terrific guide. It's like hiring a personal trainer who's at your side when you want her. It's like exercise--yes, you can do it all by yourself, but it does help to have that one-on-one expertise.

Miller is organized, clear and concise and, she's got a cheeky sense of humor to relieve tension and remind you that, yes, you can do this and it's going to be fine and it's going to be fun! The format is actually easier to use than a paperback book because I can prop it open on the desk to refresh my memory as I work and for whatever step I'm at: creating an accurate listing, contacting customers, finding tools and services to take it to the next level, and so on. In addition, her insider tips from her years in the business are quite helpful and easy to follow.

This is a particularly helpful first guide and then you can graduate and move onto the more sophisticated and involved stuff. Great investment.

I got my start with this book! 5 by .. Idaho Cat Lady (Boise, Idaho)
I love books and wanted to investigate selling them on Amazon, so I bought this book. It basically gave me everything I needed to know to get started, and the incentive to try. Although I am still very small, just selling a few books a week, I am in the process of building my inventory and have found that Ms. Miller is right - this is a do-able and profitable business and this book was absolutely invaluable in helping me to get started, and I am going to re-read it again as a continuing reference.

Must Read for a would-be bookseller or experienced bookseller 5 by .. Charles (Park Ridge Illinois)
Concise and to-the-point. Easy read. Great real-life examples of seller success stories. Chock full of helpful tips and advice to increase your sales and maintain motivation. If you want to be successful selling books, then read this book first. In fact, read it a few times just to be sure the information hits home. You can easily read it in just over an hour or so. Five-star effort all the way! Thanks Christine!

Okay Info for beginers 3 by .. Allison (Tennessee)
I have been selling books on Amazon for several months now and was looking for a book that could give me a little more expertise and tips on how to be more effective at buying and selling books. I found this book to be mostly information I have read many times before in other places, with very little new useful info for anyone who has been selling for more than a few months. This book has some good information for new book sellers, but you can get 99% of this info by reading the Amazon.com guidelines on selling and reading Michael E. Moulds' blog, both of which are free. If you don't want to spend 30 minutes on Google to get this information for yourself, then this is the book for you. If not, don't waste your money.

How to make Money 2 by .. Hegelian (Concord, MA USA)
This guide treats books like commodities to be bought and sold to make money. Almost the entire focus is on the BIG money you can make scouting books. It reminds me of those no-money-down real estate seminars where you can supposedly learn how to make BIG money! (Drop me in any city and give me a map marked with bookstores and a $5 bill and I will have a $1,000 the next day!) The author brags about how much he made by buying such-and-such a book and selling it across town for three times as much. In one case (he refers to it twice, actually) he made enough on one book to take "a vacation to Europe." If you love books, this is not for you. If you love money, you can probably make more in a different activity. Incidently, values seem exaggerated throughout.

Very thorough 4 by .. Shawn Hazen (Chicago, IL USA)
The cover is misleading: it looks like it will be about antiquarian books. But it's actually about modern firsts, so more recent, jacketed-type books. If that's what you're into, this book is great. It covers everything from how the publishing industry works to the all-important detective skills required to identify a real first edition. And a lot of super-arcane details in between. It even mentions in passing a lot of authors and titles that I've never read, so it was a great way to discover new reading material. There's also a lot of ground covered regarding "scouting" and selling books, which will be super-practical for people going down that road.

Outdated 2 by .. Chris Robert (Torrance, CA)
Without more extensive coverage of the internet marketplace, this book can only be considered out-of-date. For the most part, the kind of selling and trading presented here no longer exists as a profitable endeavor.

Without peer 5 by .. Paul Bogosian (Birthplace of Vermont)
The author loves his work and shares that love and knowledge in an immediately understandable way.

Book Finds, 3rd Edition: How to Find, Buy and Sell Used and Rare Books 5 by .. Shirley A Hickey (Green Bay, WI)
Excellent book for either the new seller or those already doing so. Information included is useful to help become an even better seller.

Excellent Book! 5 by .. Melody Moser (Mays Landing, NJ USA)
This book is a must-read for anyone who wants to learn how to write a book proposal. Whalin, who has written more than 60 nonfiction books, has also worked as an acquisitions editor, so he's got a true insider's perspective of the somewhat daunting publishing process. With his "21 Secrets to Speed your Success", you'll find straightforward tips and information that'll give you the edge on how to capture an editor's interest.

I especially enjoyed the stories derived from his career in the publishing world, and found the many website URLs and the sample book proposal that sold for a six-figure advance to be very helpful. I highly recommend this book, and will admit that I actually have two copies: one at home, and one in my desk drawer at work for lunchtime reading.

Excellent Resource 5 by .. Penelopel (la jolla, ca)
Although I was unaware of the Christian-themed advice perhaps because I was not familiar with the author, I found this book extremely helpful. It is a must-read before submitting a non-fiction book proposal. The book is short, easy to read, contains several examples, and provides a step-by-step guide to writing the non-fiction proposal. After doing a substantial amount of research on the topic, I can honestly say that this was the best information I found on the topic.

Book Proposals That Sell: 21 Secrets to Speed Your Success 5 by .. Stephanie Johnson (Colorado Springs, CO, USA)
This little book could've saved me 15 years of educating myself through workshops, classes, conferences, and writers groups. If you are just getting started in the publishing process, this book is a must-have. Knowing the background life of an editor helps writers understand that we are not the "center of their universe." (You'd be surprised how many writers believe that!) Terry includes many resources, Web sites, and crucial appendices that are necessary in writing a SUCCESSFUL proposal. He provides great anecdotes that keep the flow going, so that it's not so "dry" as to be unentertaining. The checklists will save hours of time in crafting your proposal. I highly recommend this book, and I carry it with me in my laptop bag wherever I go.

Help for fledgling writers 5 by .. Lynn Mosher (Kentucky, USA)
This book gives an insider's view of the book publication process. It is written from several angles of publishing, which gives much needed info to newbie writers and helps them to understand the process a book goes through to reach the shelves of a bookstore. Very helpful.

Finally, help for the new writer! 5 by .. C. Finch ()
I am a new writer and am currently reading Book Proposals That Sell. I love it! I am only on page 47 but I already feel so enlightened! FINALLY, someone has sent the elevator down from the Ivory Towers of the publishing world to us common folk on the ground floor!! Just in the first few pages I feel educated, aware and tuned in. Thank you for writing this book just for me!

Gardener's Journal 5 by .. F. D. Driscoll (East Longmeadow, Massachusetts United States)
An excellent book and becoming hard to find in new condition. I have had two of these in the past and wanted a third one for the years 2009-2013. The easiest book for someone who likes to compare data from year to year.

Good Hints and Down-to-Earth Information 5 by .. gojobooks (Louisiana, USA)

A Good Resource 4 by .. Timothy Haugh (New York, NY United States)
I've sold a few books on eBay, but I've never really tried seriously to make money at it. However, I have the advantage of having long experience in the book trade. Still, I was wondering what might be particular about the online world, so I decided to take a look at this book since Steve Weber is someone who started small and built a successful online business. For the most part, this book is a valuable tool for someone who really wants to make it.

There are a number of things that I really like about this book. He's very smart about where to find books and about what books are smart to acquire. He's particularly acute with suggesting areas that should be avoided and those that are easy to overlook (certain types of textbooks, particular areas of history-- "learn to find unusual books"). In these areas, his suggestions often gibe with my own experience, though I'm more excited about certain areas than he is.

He's also quite good on the mechanics of running an online business, though I focused mainly on his general suggestions about tracking inventory, pricing and customer service. He goes a bit overboard when suggesting websites and software worth looking at to manage some of these tasks. A few simple, straightforward suggestions might serve the beginner better.

And, of course, this book suffers from the fate of all books that deal with online services. Published in 2006, some of the specific suggestions, particularly concerning the smaller companies, are already out-of-date. If you stick with the larger companies, however, you probably won't have too much trouble.

In the end, this book provides valuable insight into running a bookstore. It doesn't matter whether you are someone who already owns a store and wants to get your inventory online or someone starting from scratch, there is valuable advice here.

Much more than you paid for! 5 by .. Victorya Rogers (Dallas, TX United States)
I read Home-Based Bookstore because I have hundreds of perfect condition used books I just cleared out from my personal library at home and wanted to see if I could sell them on Amazon and didn't know how to get started. Just like Steve Weber's other books, you get much more than you pay for. Weber fills this book with details covering every aspect of setting up your home based used bookstore for NO MONEY upfront. How cool is that? Where as other books on the topic have been reviewed saying they just recycle what you can find on Amazon help pages, Weber includes tons of insider information far beyond what is found on Amazon's help links, such as what and where to find books to sell, how to price them correctly, how to package and ship, get feedback from customer, handling negative feedback, handling taxes, etc. etc. etc. No question you can think up appears to be lacking an answer on these pages...and here's another exciting upside...within 2 days of reading this book and setting up my store, I've already sold and shipped THREE of my books. Thanks Steve...and keep sharing your insider information.

Fast & Furious Book Promotion

If you are one of over 4 million authors seeking to get published this year, give yourself an advantage and read this book. As the title suggests, it is a comprehensive book guiding readers through the "authorship" journey. But what I like most is that Patricia doesn't pull punches or make the job of writing and publishing sound like a walk in the park because for most aspiring authors, getting a book published is not an easy endeavor. But getting published or self-publishing your book is extremely rewarding. The key is using Patricia's book to avoid the pitfalls many other writers fall into.

Compassionate & Understanding Guidance for Novice Writers 5 by .. Charles Jacobs (Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey United States)
Patricia Fry is a person I consider one of the great teachers and contributors to the field of writing. Aside from the more than 200 articles she has published and the 25 or so books she has successfully written, Pat has encouraged hundreds of young would-be authors as they struggled to make their way in this very challenging field.

Symbolic of her care is her founding and continuing stewardship of SPAWN, the organization that encourages and informs artists and writers.

Fry's knowledge of self-publishing comes from the establishment of her own publishing company Matilija Press. She has served as an author as well as a publisher, and know both arenas exceedingly well.

This book takes a very pragmatic approach to craft and to business, both essentials in the self-publishing process. Fry casts aside the mystique and glamour of our field, and guides her readers to evaluate carefully the potential of their projects before embarking on them.

When I read her book, I felt as though Pat was advising me like a caring Mom. I well remember what it meant to me when she e-mailed me to tell me how much she liked "The Writer Within You," and then followed that up with a wonderful review in the SPAWN newsletter. Read her book, and you will see why Patricia Fry is a much-respected and beloved icon in the writing/publishing industry.

Patricia Fry Offers An Indispensable Guide For Authors 4 by .. R. Scott Lorenz (Plymouth, MI United States)
Navigating the entire self-publishing process is a time consuming endeavor. As an author you'll continue to "pay tuition" along the way in the form of misspent time and money unless you get help from those who have "been there and done that." That's why The Right Way to Write, Publish and Sell Your Book is an indispensable guide to shine a light on the pathway to publishing and selling your book. Patricia Fry, who is a seasoned author herself, offers solid, helpful tips to keep you on track in the process and more importantly, keep you from making the costly mistakes that befall most authors.

Removes The Rose-Colored Glasses for the Beginner or the Professional 5 by .. W. Terry Whalin (Scottsdale, Arizona)
As an author, a former book acquisitions editor and a literary agent, I want to know the straight scoop about the book publishing industry. It's often hard to find realistic information because even people in the business don't want to mess with the dreams and aspirations of writers and give them the straight scoop.

Patricia L. Fry in THE RIGHT WAY TO WRITE, PUBLISH AND SELL YOUR BOOK helps every writer understand the business aspect of books. I love what she wrote on page 15 at the end of the first chapter, "Too many authors fail solely because they give up. Authorship is not designed to be a hobby. It isn't something that you can successfully manage as an afterthought. It demands your full attention. Your future in writing and publishing is almost completely up to you. If you do the necessary research and work--if you exercise persistence, perseverance and patience while maintaining realistic expectations--you will experience success."

Whether you are looking for insight about writing a query or a book proposal or wondering about print on demand and self-publishing or looking for some innovative ideas to market your books to specialty shops or libraries or even how to keep a record of your expenditures or manuscript submissions, Fry has packed a lot into these pages. No matter your level of publishing experience you can profit from a careful reading and even re-reading of this book.

This book is nothing short of a step-by-step manual for anyone who wants a career as a self-published author. 5 by .. Daniel Shaurette (Scottsdale, AZ USA)
It would be a tragic understatement to say this book is a comprehensive discussion of writing and self-publishing topics. The book is full of advice and anecdotes, checklists, directories of resources, samples and examples, and more. For such a massive collection of information, she has made a great effort to categorize and organize it all so that the reader can find exactly what they are looking for. It makes a better textbook on the craft than any I've ever read.

Note also that while she does share her opinions on every topic, she's sure not to steer the reader down any primrose path. We all know there's no one solution to turn your dreams of becoming a published author into reality. Her book lists all avenues, with their pros and cons, and straight answers to the questions we all ask.

Then if that wasn't enough, she also sells THE AUTHOR'S WORKBOOK companion to THE RIGHT WAY. In it, she breaks everything out into checklists and forms to help guide the reader in their progress. It goes hand-in-hand with the book, and really fleshes out key concepts for beginning writers..

All told, this is a great book for old hands and new writers alike, and that is what I like most of all. This book deserves to not only be on your bookshelf, but truly on your desktop along with all of your tools of the trade.

Dated but good Info 4 by .. Shania Duncan (California)
This book is not recent, therefore some of the information does not ring true anymore. However, it does provide a lot of good information. I checked it out from the library, but it wouldn't be a bad book to own. There is not mention of anything about the internet as it was published in the 80's. It is mainly geared toward nonfiction writing. Though the information would be good for anyone planning to self-publish. Another book I would recommend if you're really into self-publishing, is Dan Poynter's Self-Publihing manual.

Dated material 3 by .. Jeffery Suddeth (Wheaton, IL USA)
I was looking for a book on self publishing and I knew which one I wanted but I grabbed this one by mistake. It has some interesting information about the publishing industry and some good advice about editing.

But some of the things he said about the publishing industry just seemed wrong. He was also talking about B. Dalton and Crown books as if they were the largest book sellers in the indsutry. No mention of Amazon or B&N? Something seemed wrong. Checking the copyright page I found that this book was published in 1985.

The industry has definately changed over the past 20 years. The Internet, Word Processing software, and other technology advances since the early 80's have changed the way books are written and published. It is time for an update to this book.

Redundancy coupled with hand holding 2 by .. Brian Hawkinson (San Jose, CA)
As most aspiring authors have done, I have searched for helpful books on authoring and publishing. I came across this book and it seemed promising because it offered both sides of the track and everything in between. For someone interested in the basics who has not read anything, this would be a book to read.

Holt goes from point A to B and doesn't miss any details, no matter how small. He'll tell you what color pencil to use in editing, to how to open your mail. Much of this the normal person with any amount of common sense would know how to do, why fill your book with what everyone knows how to do? Other times he writes on every detail you could imagine on how to write and prepare your manuscipt, or how to promote and distribute and so on, only to become redundant, writing the same advice several times throughout.

Also, this is most certainly not a book to help the fiction writer. Where there are some anecdotes to help explain some of the printing and editing process, it is geared strictly for the nonfiction authors and their world. He tries to mask it at first, talking about both the fiction as well as the nonfiction, but quickly leaves fiction by the wayside. Then, out of nowhere, something on fiction will creep in for a line or two, and then is gone. The author made no mention in the book description or title that this was a how-to book on how to write and publish how-to books. Some blaim falls on myself, I guess, since I didn't take the time to peruse the chapter headings, but, wait, that would have still fooled me. Even when I read some of the text of the book at the bookstore it seemed, without reading the whole book, that it would be useful on both sides. I was wrong.

If you are a fiction writer looking for guidance, look elsewhere. As so many how-to books on publishing and writing do, this one doesn't cover fiction writing. Every publishing how-to always says to find a field that is marketable, well how come people aren't writing on this one, on how-to write and publish fiction? Perhaps some day, until then we must settle for the nonfiction how-tos to gleam a small amount of help.
