Product Description CompTIA is revising the popular Security+ exam for the first time since it launched in 2002. This kit includes the key Sybex titles for the new CompTIA Security+ exam: CompTIA Security+ Study Guide, Fourth Edition; CompTIA Security+ Review Guide; and Security Administrator Street Smarts, Second Edition. With this complete guide, you’ll get 100 percent coverage of the Security+ exam objectives and clear, concise information on critical security topics. Plus, you’ll learn step by step how to perform the most common or the most challenging tasks that a security professional faces. Customer reviews Not enough to pass the security + exam by .. 4Jacks (Norfolk VA) Very good book on basic concepts and practice test question. However there are some areas not cover for the exam or the concept is outdated for the 2007 objects. I do recommend this book and the "All In One Security Plus Certification by White" to cover the majority of concepts for the Security Plus exam.
Good general overview by .. D. Fowler (Chesapeake, VA) From a high level overview perspective, the certification kit contains valuable content. However, when digging deeper, there are annoying technical inaccuracies throughout the text. For example, it indicates that the public key is utilized to digitally sign messages when it is actually the private key which is utilized for digital signatures.
Not the only study material you will need by .. D. Miller () I have a few certification including CompTIA A+,Network+ and Inet+. This is the first certification test I have not passed the first time. It is also the first where I only used one source for my studies. That may be my fault. I found the books in this set missed key areas I was tested on. I actually thought after taking the exam I purchased an out of date book.
I have used Sybex as one of my study guides on prior exams but in this case it was not enough. I personally think the package is great and found no errors but I do not think this series is up to par with their other Certification kits. It covers more than what is on the exam and at the same time totally misses other areas.
I PASSED USING THIS KIT! by .. SMcG (Boston, MA) I highly recommend this kit to anyone preparing to take the Security+ exam. I did it by reading the entire Security+ Study Guide while testing myself chapter by chapter using the CDs test engine (also included on the CD is the entire book in PDF format which can be quite convenient). Then I moved onto the Fast Pass book which reinforced what I already knew from the previous book. Also included in the Fast Pass book is another CD with a test engine on it (unfortunately no pdf of the book on this one though). That's really all I did. I studied for about 8-10 hours a day for about 11 days and on day 12 took the exam and passed; I'm now a CompTIA Security+ certified IT Professional!

It covers security for Windows, Linux, and NetWare. An excellent resource for network administrators and security specialists. Customer reviews Not VERY bad by .. Ziad Turk (LHC, AZ, USA) the paper Quality is the first thing to talk about; it is so reflective that you cannot read comfortably, Very difficult to distinguish the words, concerning the ease of study, some lessons were so MIXED up,so fragmented, that it makes you lose the path, while some other lessons wre better organized, I purchased this book along with the MICROSOFT(Security+ certification), and the QUE (Security+ training guide), the BEST one, easiest to study from, was the Microsoft book, although, it was missing some new concepts that I had to study from the other 2 books (2003 edition)when SD,MMC flash memory cards were still (a new concept gaining popularity), if you really wanna pass the Exam, just go to prepLogic, their material, is so practical, and accurate, that sure you will.

Companion CD-ROM CD contains a test engine with over 300 questions, lab equipment suggestions, sample configurations, and a bonus electronic copy of the complete CCIE Routing and Switching Exam Cram text. Customer reviews Totally out of date by .. R. McDonald (USA) This book is completely out of date. It was relevant 3 yrs ago but it will not get you 20% of what you need to pass the current CCIE Security 2.0 exam.
Information within is very broad and generalized - nothing like you'll experience on the test itself.
Also, the test software from Boson is a complete joke. 1 in 10 questions are wrong. In other words, what they list as the correct answer is not always the case. Also, you'll find that you might click on an answer and then it tells you it's wrong and that the right answer is the same as the one you picked - only instead of 'A', it's 'C' for example. Sigh..... what a waste of $50.
A woefully, inadequate "study guide" for Cisco's premier certification. by .. Doilfred Mascarenhas () The CCIE Security Exam Certification Guide glosses over "topics" listed in the CCIE version 1 blueprint. Each section provides a high level view of a subject. This book is riddled with configuration errors and lacks depth. While not study guides, other books like Network Security Principles and Practices -- Saadat Malik, Network Security Architectures -- Sean Convery and Cisco Router Firewall Security -- Richard Deal were excellent, detailed and fun to learn from.
Benjamin's description of cryptography and related protocols is terrible and should be avoided. A study guide should list salient features of a technology, not just fillers that will confuse the reader. I found chapter 4 (Security protocols) weak and skipped reading this chapter all together, preferring other, *better* tomes - Malik for example. Examples - The ESP Frame Format figure is incorrect. In the IPSec section, Benjamin writes "You can tunnel any form of data across the IPSec tunnel, such as IP, Novel IPX, or AppleTalk." Not without GRE to first encapsulate the non-IP traffic. IPSec works only on IP traffic and non-IP traffic should be encapsulated (recommended GRE encapsulation) prior to IPSec.
In chapter 5, Security Applications, Benjamin writes the following on VPN Concentrators "Cisco makes a number of recommendations in its SAFE Blueprint, but in general requires that the VPN Concentrator be located behind a Cisco PIX Firewall on the inside interface where the DMZ is located. The Cisco SAFE Blueprint has a number of recommendations based on network size and appliances, though". The SAFE blueprint does not recommend having a VPN device beyond a Firewall. Common sense would dictate that having this scenario would require opening up the Pix for all encrypted traffic.
I truly hope that Benjamin would write a far better book for the CCIE v2.0 blueprint.
A good global view to exam by .. Adailton B. Cruz () It's a good book with most of all topics to someone make the CCIE Security written exam, but not so deep.
Puddle depth? That's one way of putting it... by .. Benjamin Low (NSW Australia) As another reviewer put it: puddle depth. As is not uncommon with most CCxx prep books, Benjamin's CCIE Security coverage is barely broad enough and nowhere deep enough. I'm using this more as a basic overview for a topic, then it's off to the Cisco documentation and lab work for a few hours to figure out how the thing really works.
Oh I wish for someone like Odom or Doyle/Carroll to write a CCIE Security book! It'd be two or three volumes, but it'd be worth the money, unlike "CCIE Security Exam Certification Guide". Buy it second hand, or better use Safari - at least you'll not waste a tree.
Excellent Study Guide for CCIE Security Written Exam by .. Mark G. Reyero (Annapolis, MD United States) I obtained a copy of Henry Benjamin's "CCIE Security Exam Certification Guide" (ISBN 1587201356) to complete my final preparation for the CCIE Security Written Exam. Contrary to a few other reviews, I found this book to be extremely valuable for my final review. This book is exactly what it states in the title, a study guide for the exam. It is not a detailed analysis of security architectures and principles. It should not be viewed a CCIE Security "bible". Rather, this book should be used by a CCIE Security candidate only after he or she has read most of the other security related books listed on the CCIE Written Roadmap on Cisco's website.
I found the layout of the book to be beneficial for the CCIE Security candidate. Each chapter opens with a "Do I know this already?" quiz. The quizzes are helpful in assessing the reader's knowledge on the chapter's topics. Therefore, the reader will be better prepared to focus on the areas where he or she may be weak. The chapters then jump right in to its particular topic, presenting the material in a concise and articulate manner. The chapters close with a summary, questions and answers, and references to additional information. Finally, the book includes a testing engine as well as an electronic version of the book on CDROM.
I appreciated the "bonus" CCIE Security and Routing & Switching lab scenarios at the end of the book. A competent and confident Cisco engineer can never get enough hands-on practice lab scenarios to sharpen and keep ones skills fresh.
Again, I must emphasize that this book is a culmination of the CCIE Security candidate's exam preparation, not a starting point! If you are just starting your CCIE journey, I strongly recommend that you review the written exam blueprint on Cisco's website and begin with the Doyle, Malik, and De Laet and Gert Schauwers books, to quickly name a few. I am confident that this book assisted me in conquering the CCIE Security Written exam!

Product Description Building and Implementing a Security Certification and Accreditation Program: Official (ISC)2 Guide to the CAP CBK demonstrates the practicality and effectiveness of certification and accreditation (C&A) as a risk management methodology for IT systems in both public and private organizations. It provides security professionals with an overview of C&A components, enabling them to document the status of the security controls of their IT systems, and learn how to secure systems via standard, repeatable processes. This book consists of four main sections. It begins with a description of what it takes to build a certification and accreditation program at the organization level, followed by an analysis of various C&A processes and how they interrelate. The text then provides a case study of the successful implementation of certification and accreditation in a major U.S. government department. It concludes by offering a collection of helpful samples inthe appendices. Customer reviews dated material by .. J. Fowler (Washington D.C.) This book is hard to follow primarily due to the author's labored writing style. Lots of DITSCAP information but no one really uses DITSCAP anymore.
Applying Information Security "best practices" by .. Charlie Chrosniak (Washington, DC USA) Author Pat Howard delivers the goods on this one. He finds an effective middle ground between producing an overview/survey and getting bogged down in the nuances and details. If you are charged with implementing an information security program and getting your IT systems certified and accredited, this is a good place to start!

It also provides real-world scenarios, case study examples, and troubleshooting labs for the skills and expertise you can apply to the job. Customer reviews Great Study Material by .. Mark Grogan (Kenilworth QLD, Aust.) I used this book (ISA 2004) as the primary material to study for the Isa 2006 70-351 Exam.
It more than covers the foundations of ISA Server and with some time spent on MS.com researching ISA 2006 enhancements is all that was required.
I am becoming a huge fan of the MS Press books and this one is no exception.
Perhaps a little more focus on Enterprise rather than the single chapter would be good as there are a few Enterprise questions in the exam, but still that takes nothing away from this text.
5 Stars!
Mark Grogan
MCSA/MCSE Self-Paced Training Kit (Exam 70-350): by .. D. Husk () The writing style is somewhat dry.
The enclosed software (ISA server 120 day evaluation) and the computerized test questions make the book worth the money.
Very good book. by .. Alexander Búfalo (São Paulo, Brasil) This book does not base itself in only Microsoft scenario, it covers networks and security in a wide context.
Well written, gives you the ability to deploy and understand the ISA SERVER, which by itself is an excelent software, and the environments which your are deploy in.
You don't need to be an expert in IT to comprehend this book, but need to know a little about protocols and TCP/IP.
Who buys it can enjoy a good travel through the network boundaries world.
I didn't rate it 5 for 2 reasons. First, the book says, sometimes, you have got an enterprise isa cd, but you have got the standard one.
The author, sometimes, endeavours so much in assuring your understandable of the subject that spend a few pages more than needed. Another drawback is the excess of "plan, analyse, get information" advices. It becomes repetitive through the pages.
Well, that is it, a good book and enough to pass the certification exam by yourself.
MS Security by .. Zaher Samaan (canada) Very nice book , I recommended it for all specialist in Microsoft networking, and systems.
preparing for exam by .. Abdoulaye Diop () Very helpful for exam 70-350 and daily tasks as IT Network security administrator.

Product Description All-in-One is all you need! This authoritative reference offers complete coverage of all material on CCSP exams SECUR (Exam 642-501), CSPFA (Exam 642-511), CSVPN (Exam 642-511), CSIDS (Exam 642-531), and CSI (Exam 642-541). You’ll find exam objectives at the beginning of each chapter, helpful exam tips, end-of-chapter practice questions, and photographs and illustrations. The bonus CD-ROM contains a testing engine with questions found only on the CD. Our Web site features additional lab exercises as well as continuing updates based on Cisco’s latest objective releases for these exams. This comprehensive guide not only helps you pass these challenging exams, but will also serve as an invaluable on-the-job reference. Customer reviews Not a good book for Exam Guide, maybe reference by .. () This book, while obviously having loads of information, is not as helpful as its price should indicate. I found many small typos throughout the book, and there are numerous times that I found actually incorrect information. After studying this book very heavily, I found that it only mentioned about two-thirds of what I actually found on the test (CSPFA 642-521). When I took the test, I was completely surprised by much of the information. The packaged test in the book is really just a test on the book itself, and does not represent the actual test very well (CSPFA 642-521). This book does have a lot of information, and can be used as a study guide, but I would absolutely recommend buying another book to supplement it, or taking a course.
Fair, considering the competition by .. Benjamin Low (NSW Australia) I've used four CCSP-related books in preparing for teaching the CCSP subject material, and have found none of them completely up to the task. The All-In-One covers the SECUR and CSPFA material reasonably well, though starts to fall down with CSVPN and is mediocre at best for CSIDS. CSI? Well that gets all of four pages of bullet points reprinted from the official Cisco exam content and the recommendation to go and read the free Cisco SAFE whitepapers. As with all CCSP books, much of the text is borrowed (some might say plagiarised, given no referencing is used) from the official Cisco documentation. Picking a page pretty much at random: p 466 discusses Split Tunnelling for the VPN 3000 Concentrator; the text here is a lightly edited copy from the (free) Cisco VPN 3000 Config Guide, rel 4.1, p 271 (13.35). This book has many factual and editorial errors (e.g. picking random examples from my annotations: figures in Chapter 24 are all off-by-one, IP addresses given in screen grabs in Chapter 15 are incorrect; the description of HMAC on p. 292 confuses the shared key with a private key) to the point that causes the reader to question the validity of the material (perhaps this is intentional to force students to check everything!). Even some of the copied Cisco documentation has errors introduced: e.g. the diagrams of the IDS architecture in Chapter 24 are incorrect when compared to the original Cisco documentation, and the text. Pretty much all of Chapter 25 (CSIDS) is out of date and no longer relevant to the current (2004) exams. As of March 2004, the publisher's web site has not released any errata. The material covering the SECUR and CSPFA exams is about 80-90% of what you'll need to review to prepare for those exams; for the remaining 10-20% and for the other exams you WILL need to refer to other references (i.e. the Cisco documentation). For CSIDS and CSI, this book will be of very little help. Having said all of the above, I can vouch for this book being about the best of a bad bunch. None of the competing books seem to be any better!
The best book by .. Joe W Dale (Tacoma, WA. United States CCNA, NET+) The CCSP all in one is The best books I have read by far covering all the important objectives covering Cisco Security. The book covers 3.6 auto-initiation very clear and I was able to pass the CSVPN easily. The book takes a no-nonsense approach and I will find myself using it as an excellent reference now and in the future. Well written and easy to understand if you are preparing for the CCSP, you need to include this as a must.

Product Description Mike Meyers, the industry expert on professional certification, brings you this concise, affordable, and portable study tool for the CompTIA Security+ certification exam. Customer reviews Passing the test by .. J. Sheffer (Pittsburgh, PA) The information in this book will not allow you to pass the exam. You need quite a bit more information. This book is not bad but if you want to study one book and attempt to pass security+ I'd get the examcram2 book. Also I'd highly reccomend taking pretests.
Insufficient to prepare for Security+ by .. Ashamed () I have been working with computers professionally for over 20 years. Recently a client asked me to take the Security+ exam. I bought a copy of Mike Meyers' Certification Passport Security+ book and took the tests at the end of all 14 chapters to see what I needed to study. I missed 7 out of the 140 questions, or scored 95%. I felt I was ready to take the Security+ without any further study.
I just returned from taking the test. I scored 764, with a 764 being the minimum score to pass. I am totally humiliated. I am absolutely ashamed to show my client the 746 score after believing I would have a score I could be proud of.
FYI, when another client asked me to take the Net+, I scored 900. That was a year ago and I used ExamCram Net+ to guage my readiness to take the Net+. The ExamCram chapter tests were a much better reflection of the Net+ than the way Mike Meyers' Certification Passport Security+ book reflects the Security+.
Great starter book, but rely on this and you will be screwed by .. Dustin Ewers (Peoria, Il) This is a great book for people who need a good overview of the exam. It's also a good book for people who are reviewing for the exam, it is not, however, a good book for the bulk of important material in the exam. The book is very high level and doesn't go into much detail. It's still better than the Exam Cram, which is a total piece of crap. I'd get this and then read a bigger book.
Great Book Excelent Study Aid by .. Joshua White (Rome, NY, USA) I used this book as a last week before testing study guide. It's great review of all the major key points. While it didn't go into deep detail on many of the subjects, it does outline all of them. If you can read each of the chapters within the expert time given at the begining of each of them then you're ready for the test. I got 890/900, Now it's time for the CISSP and I will definitly buy the Passport book for that.
I do agree with other reviewers though, this book is a review book and shouldn't be used alone.
Not so much a "Ticket to Exam Success" by .. Chadwick Johnson (Iowa) This book should not be used as your only form of study for the Security+ certification. Although helpful, it would best serve as a starter dish or desert for a more complete book like Gregory White's "All-in-one Security+ Certification". Defiantly not the main course.

Product Description Master the tools of the network security trade with the official book from SANS Press! You need more than a hammer to build a house, and you need more than one tool to secure your network. Security Essentials Toolkit covers the critical tools that you need to secure your site, showing you why, when, and how to use them. Based on the SANS Institute's renowned Global Information Assurance Certification (GIAC) program, this book takes a workbook-style approach that gives you hands-on experience and teaches you how to install, configure, and run the best security tools of the trade. Customer reviews An excellent supplemental text for networking if you are on a tight budget and in a hurry by .. Charles Ashbacher (Marion, Iowa United States(cashbacher@yahoo.com)) Several years ago, I was tasked with teaching a two-course networking sequence on very short notice. I was also not given a great deal of assistance in terms of money for new equipment or software, so any software tools would have to be freeware. Fortunately, I had a copy of this book, which contains a series of 56 exercises in computer network security. Most rely on tools that are either free or available free for a trial period. Furthermore, many of the exercises require significant knowledge of networking principles, so I was able to create laboratory exercises that tested networking knowledge although they were focused on security.
I did not use this book as a text, it pointed me towards the appropriate tools and their location, which I downloaded and then worked through to write my own lab exercises. This allowed me to overcome the inexperience that I had concerning some of the principles needed to use and understand the tools. However, this book certainly could have been used as a text, although the proper role would be to use it as a supplemental text rather than a primary one.
Not a complete Exam Prep ... but still essential for anyone studying the basics of IT Security by .. Cormac Doyle (Ireland) The Security Essentials Toolkit is a book that is very easy to pick up and read, and concentrates on the practical elements of the GIAC SANS GSEC exam that differentiate it from the other major vendor neutral certifications (such as the SSCP and Security+). While the Security+ exam may discuss the fact that "Viruses are bad" and review the different types of malware, the GSEC also looks at HOW to detect, avoid, block and/or remove such exploits.
This text was originally published in 2002, and recently celebrated its 5th birthday. However, I would argue that this is not as critical as it may first appear to be. The entire thrust of this book is to encourage you to download, install and experiment with these tools - this is not so much a Textbook, but rather a Lab Guide / Workbook. Although this book includes the vast majority of the tools that you require to sit this exam, it should be noted that the GSEC curriculum is revised regularly, and consequently, this text should be considered an effective starting point - not an all-inclusive text.
Because some of these labs entail installing and running applications that would often breach company policies (port scans, root kits, trojan horses, key loggers and the like), warning are scattered liberally throughout the book to ensure that you have the written permission of the appropriate department before performing any of these steps on your company network - and it's a warning that really must be heeded ... if you're studying for this sort of certification, you must start to understand the requirement for creating such policies, because in the long run, you'll probably be creating the policies for your minions colleagues!
In some environments, setting up these labs may be difficult, as many companies will have web filters that could well block some of these things from being downloaded; a CD with these tools would be a welcome addition to the toolkit.
I would consider this title to be essential reading for anyone considering studying not only the GSEC certification, but for any practical introduction to Information Security / Computer Security (such as the Security+ and SSCP certifications, to name just a selection). However, this should be one of several study texts - it is not a complete exam preparation guide (but doesn't claim to be either).
good book, but not always accurate by .. (San Francisco, CA USA) If you don't have any security background then this book is a good place to start. Be ready, however, for most of the links to be out of date (the book was published in 2002). This can be circumvented by a little help from Google to find the utilities you need for the exercises. There are also a few inaccuracies in the syntax provided. These can be resolved with help from "man" (i.e. 'man ipchains') or the help for the particular utility.
Great hands on book by .. Kip Perkins (Mt Juliet, TN United States) I really liked this book. I liked how it did not just inform you about these tools but actually had you use them to gain understanding. Any good systems/network admin should be familier with the tools in this book. Both UNIX and Windows admins will gain great experiance and understanding of their systems weaknesses. I have read many books on "hacking" and security and this one is the only one that actually has you use these tools. It is setup in a very easy to follow and understand format. This book is a must for EVERY Admin, not just for preparing you for a test. Even if you never take a security exam, this book will give you great intro and experience with the use of the tools described.
No time spent proofreading this book by .. Thomas Harbour (Ottawa, ON) This book presents some welcome hands on exercises to learn about security. However, it is very clear that at no time did anyone sit down with the book and actually try out the exercises before the book was published. The result is that many of the exercises simply do not work as written and much time is spent simply troubleshooting the steps. Apart from the poor quality control of this book, it lacks good solid explanations to accompany most of them. Like many such exercise-oriented book the minimal level of explanations leaves one feeling that they are merely following a recipe in a cookbook. In summary, while the book offers something that is missing in the marketplace, it seems that is was rushed into print with little quality control. Unfortunately there are no errata sheets available from the publisher.
