Product Description The SAS Survival Handbook is the Special Air Service's complete course in being prepared for any type of emergency. John 'Lofty' Wiseman presents real strategies for surviving in any type of situation, from accidents and escape procedures, including chemical and nuclear to successfully adapting to various climates (polar, tropical, desert), to identifying edible plants and creating fire. The book is extremely practical and is illustrated throughout with easy-to-understand line art and diagrams. Customer reviews SAS Survival by .. Roy () I have always loved camping in the wilderness, and am always perfecting my skills at it. This book is full of information, and some even I never knew. This I would have to say is by far the best book I have ever seen. If anyone is thinking about bettering there skills in the outdoors this is a very good book. If anyone is an outdoors fan as I am, this would be a very BIG plus to have. If you like camping, hiking, hunting, or fishing without using all the high tech gadgets of today, or as a very good backup plan to these high tech gadgets, this is the book to have.
Wonderful Handbook by .. Captin Gnarly (Florida, USA) If you get this book, it will keep you busy for a long time.
I learned auite a bit on subjects I'm already quite familiar with not to mention learing traits of which I'm not familiar with. It is quite large for a "handbook" however I have not found a page to remove as 'not needed'. Still looking for a 'pocket' version.
When the Zombies attack, who you gonna call? by .. Joseph C. McDaniel (Arizona)
If you have his number, you'll call this author, John "Lofty" Wiseman.
If you don't, you better have this book.
While this book won't help with actually disposing of the zombies, it will assist tremendously in surviving in the desert/jungle/arctic wilderness you've been driven to in your escape.
And seriously, folks, stuff happens. You'll recall that there were air raid shelters when we were kids, all those years ago; and those are now gone.
So when the fertilizer hits the air circulation devices, you'll need to rely on your own preparation and knowledge.
This guy (Lofty) is the THE guy in the area of survival. After 26 years with the SAS, he's taught survival and hand to hand and God knows what else, and he is as matter of fact as can be about teaching what he knows.
This book is sort of like an explorer scout handbook on steroids. It provides simple, direct instructions about how to survive in all sorts of different environments, and how to obtain critical resources including food and water from those various environments.
Now, just having the book is better than nothing.
Even better is reading the book and putting together the "kit" he suggests (including knife, flashlight, and so on) in preparation for the zombie invasion, BEFORE that eventuality occurs.
This is a very good book. While Lofty knows a lot about a lot, he had to cram a lot into one book. This book won't tell you in great detail how to build or use a bow and arrow. It won't tell you in great detail how to hunt, fish, or prepare wild game.
On the other hand, having this much info is WAY better than being as dumb as you currently are (you haven't butchered a wild pig, have you? And you don't know the major difference between prepping a sheep and a pig, and the reason for the difference, do you?
Well, neither did I; but having read it once, it'll stick. And if I'm lucky, I won't have to deal with a reactor spill, or rocket attack, or zombie invasion; but this book is a useful book to have read, in the event that the dam does break, or the Creek do rise.
Comprehensive Survival Text by .. Michele Maddox-grott (Camptonville, CA USA) My husband has the pocket sized version of this which he carries in his backpack. This one is for me. We're avid outdoors people, hiking and camping in the wilderness areas of the southwest and California. It's the "bible" of survival texts which includes emergency medicine, bushcraft, and safety information for every environment. This is a "must" for another serious about spending time in the outdoors.
Awesome by .. A. Oliver (Michigan Tech, Mi) Well worth the price. If you ever needed it you would be glad you spent the money on it. Anything you could imagine if you were in a survival situation this book has.

Customer reviews Great for kids! by .. Kelly G. Martin (Terre Hill, PA USA) I've been on the lookout for a good little book on survival to use as a text in a class I'm teaching for 7-8 grade students at a local elementary/Jr. High school. I was pleased to find no bad language or "hard edge" military reference. Fine basic information for civillians. Very easy to read for Jr. Highers with no high-brow words. Lofty seems like a stand up guy, and I'm thankful he saw fit to put this together. Also, It's small enough to fit in your kit and the kids will like taking it home with them. Now, if only I could give them a Mora Clipper knife and Blastmatch as well, they would be set! God bless "zero tolerance"....
Excellent book by .. Joel Shinneman () This book is comprehensive and extremely thorough. Diagrams and drawings supplement written instructions on everything from knot tying, snare construction, animal preperation and edible plants.
Good as a pocket survival guide. by .. Da Bomb () This book is great. It tells you basic needs for survival like how to find water, make shelter and purify water. It is just a great book. If you frequently travel to different places like jungles or forests and you want to know how to survive in the wild if you get lost, this is a good book to get.
Compact, comprehensive, interesting and useful. by .. D. Africk (NY) I bring this with me every time I go camping. It is very compact, fairly light, and packed with tons of useful info. Much of the info is practical knowledge even if you're not in a survival situation. It is written clearly and well illustrated, and is fun to read. The book is also water resistant and very durable. I have noticed a lot of typos in the book, but I still consider it the best survival book I have seen, and I highly reccomend it. I also have the larger version, which is a little easier to read and contains a bit more info, but the smaller one is very comprehensive and has almost as much information.
very good by .. bob () seems complete, the color pics of plants & stuff are great, the only slight problem is he uses some idioms that are from england but considering were he is from, i have read & tried parts of this book, seem to work well

Product Description A necessary and effective manual of urban survival techniques, a companion to the SAS Survival Handbook (1,000,000 copies sold).John "Lofty" Wiseman is the author of the bestselling SAS Survival Handbook, the definitive guide to survival in the wild from Britain's Special Air Service. Now he has compiled a complete guide to survival in the urban jungle. Every year in America there are thousands of fatal accidents in the home—more than on the roads, and many more than in the great outdoors. Fire, electricity, water, gas, sharp knives, poisons, chemicals—these valuable tools can quickly become dangerous weapons when not treated with proper respect and understanding. Add to these the risks of travel, terrorism, muggings, rape, tsunamis, and earthquakes. We are constantly reminded that the world is a dangerous place. Wiseman shows readers how to think realistically and practically about these perils in order to avoid them, whether they are at home, on the street, in school, or in transit. From self-defense techniques to home security systems to coping with natural disasters, this book will teach readers to recognize risks, make quick decisions, and live confidently in the modern urban world. 100 color illustrations. Customer reviews Not as much fun as the "SAS survival guide" by .. RRR (Holland) Maybe I was expecting too much after reading the "SAS survival guide".
There is a lot of usefull information in this book, but don't expect to find as many clever tricks or knowledge as in the original.
Good Stuff! by .. D. E. Weerasinghe (Colombo,Sri Lanka) Once again Mr. Wiseman has put out a thoroughly useful, practical and comprehensive book. It will help everyone who reads it.
It is what it says it is... by .. D. A. Blankinship (USA) This book's title conveys its topic; it is a book with detailed guidance on minimizing your risks in the urban environment on a day-to-day basis.
Wiseman writes clearly and compellingly as he takes you from one scenario to another, explaining the types of problems you may encounter and the actions that will get you out of trouble. I began reading his book on a Sunday afternoon and I found myself stopping every few pages to tell my wife about some new bit of information I had not known about my own environment. For example, if your television catches on fire, throw a wet blanket over it because there is a good chance that the picture tube will explode! Perhaps everyone else already knows this, but I didn't: raw potatoes are poisonous and can be fatal.
The middle portion of the book has dozens of pictures of common houseplants that are lethal. The book is illustrated throughout and it is designed to work well as a reference in the event of a problem (i.e., call out boxes with critical information and consistent use of color with WARNINGS in red and entire pages with dashed borders with the systematic instructions).
The only `down side' to this book is that it is written for a British audience and a slight US bias does pop up occasionally and references to laws on gun ownership, self-defense, etc., are based on British law; otherwise, a great book and a handy reference source.
Must read... by .. P. Jevtic (Orchard Park, NY United States) The book is useful to everyone. Topics such as emergency kits are very valuable, and practical.
Get the book, and make your own call, I used something from the book just yesterday.
Puts the Boy Scout Manual to Shame by .. WILLIAM MCLEAN (Medford, OR USA) Well written and nicely illustrated, this book is a quality work. Yes,even a serious approach to survival in any environment - except urban and suburban environments. I am impressed. Using the suggestions contained could be life saving for people lost in wild environments. And I think hard core survivalists will treasure this book.

Product Description Biomedical and social science researchers who want to analyze survival data with SAS will find just what they need with this easy-to-read and comprehensive guide. Written for the reader with a modest statistical background and minimal knowledge of SAS software, this book teaches many aspects of data input and manipulation. Numerous examples of SAS code and output make this an eminently practical resource, ensuring that even the uninitiated becomes a sophisticated user of survival analysis. The main topics presented include censoring, survival curves, Kaplan-Meier estimation, accelerated failure time models, Cox regression models, and discrete-time analysis. Also included are topics not usually covered, such as time-dependent covariates, competing risks, and repeated events. Customer reviews I think I know it by heart now by .. A Sanders (Florida) This is by far the best SAS book I own (and I have a whole shelf full). I have made use of it repeatedly. The examples are excellent. This is definitely a methods book, not a theory book, but the presentation of the statistical concepts is clear and easy to follow and apply.
Nice reference for survival analysis by .. Anonymous (Boston) So far, this book has been a useful reference for survival analysis. It is clearly written and the xplanatins are understandable and helpful. It would be nice to have a newer edition that addresses changes in later versions of SAS.
Learn By Doing by .. Tarek Milleron (Berkeley, CA United States) If you have data that fit the general category "time to event," and are not suitably analyzed by repeated measures ANOVA, you are probably looking at doing a survival analysis (also known by several other names). If you are working largely on your own, and you learn best by doing, you cannot--as far as I know--do better than Allison's book. Of course it all but locks you into using SAS for analyses, but his explanations of proportional hazards and other models are the best I've found among a dozen textbooks and stats package manuals (some of which made sense only after reading Allison). What makes this book so good is that it will have you running your analyses in just hours. The examples are superb take-off points. I was not a SAS user before reading the book and therefore took a little extra time to figure out dataset manipulations and such in SAS, but that was minor effort compared to the rewards of having Allison's clearly written book as a guide. The price of this book represents only a fraction of its value.
Extraordinarily Clear and Useful by .. () I've used a number of this author's books and they all share in common lucidity, utility, and rigor. This book makes it easy to grasp complex ideas, provides comprehensible examples, gives sample SAS code so that implementing the methods is as straightforward as possible. Plus, it is clear that the author is a subtle and first-rate methodologist, who innovates in this area as well as teaches it.
Best how-to book on survival analysis using SAS. Very useful by .. () This book is well-written, well-organized, and very practical. I found it invaluable in conducting my research. My only recommendation for the author for his next edition is to include a chapter on dealing with correlated event times, like time-to-promotion and time-to-quiting in his policemen example (pg 249).

Customer reviews Fun day in the wild by .. L. kokoszka (plymouth, mi) I have read a many survival guides and things of such. One definite plus over most is colored images for identifying things that may be harmfull if eaten. It covers a lot of different terrain, weather and just about anything you might need. The best thing about this is it is very small, and if you are a hiker (or outdoors man) you can throw it in your pack to reference as situation arises without worrying too much about taking up too much space.
Excellent book!! by .. Ross (Halifax, NS CAN) One of my friends bought the big version that had a little more information in it. I read it and when I saw that you could buy a pocket version I was thrilled! Wisemen gives an informative description of everything you need to survive almost anywhere. I'm confident that if I were in a survival situation I would be able to survive.
This book will be very useful and I know it! by .. () I just bought this book the other day and it is amazing. It gives you the facts you need for survival. If I get caught in a situation from the book and I don't know what to do, I will be suprized.
GREAT BOOK THAT EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE by .. () This great book teaches you how to survive. It has so many detailed descriptions with graphs. It is so compact that I even carry it everyday in my backpack. It might be really useful when the war starts or an earthquake takes place.
Outstanding by .. Eric (Ilinois) I've had this book for a few years now and have read it over and over again. The information is amazing. There's not a topic that Wiseman doesn't cover or at least touch on. Not only is it small, it's tough too. It's been on every camping trip, hike, deployment and just about every other trip with me for the past three years and it's still in great shape. Friends of mine that could have cared less about a suvival book have read mine on airplane rides and afterwards went and bought thier own. You can't go wrong

Author : Barry Davies Number of Pages : 160 Publisher : Lewis International Inc Company : GenPro List Price : $11.95 Amazon Price : $21.99 Used Price : $15.00 | Features Product Description The Special Air Service operates worldwide, often in remote and hostile locations where nature poses as much of a hazard as any enemy. In order to stay alive and complete their missions, SAS personnel are rigorously trained in the art of survival. This book is based on SAS training and techniques. This general survival guide contains detailed information on basic survival in any situation, including techniques of shelter construction, sourcing water, first aid, fire making, food hunting, signalling, navigation and equipment. Drawing on practical, first-hand knowledge, the entries are arranged in order of survival priority, with photographs, cutaway drawings and diagrams. Specially designed to fit in a rucksack or pocket, this book offers a potentially life-saving companion for any outdoor activity. Customer reviews make sure you read this BEFORE you need to use it! by .. M. Berlin (Albuquerque, NM USA) As with all the SAS guides and military manuals in general, this book is packed with valuable information. However, in most cases it's so detailed and case-specific that it should never be used as a quick-reference guide, unless of course you've already studied it thoroughly before setting out into the desert. Most of the techniques described in the book must be practiced (some several times) before they should be employed in a survival situation. The section on edible vs poisonous plants should simply be avoided or used to supplement direct education-- tiny black-and-white drawings along with their descriptions can get really confusing if you don't know exactly what you're doing. Again, this is a great guide. Just make sure you read it!
Short Sweet w/ No B.S. by .. Grass Widow (GA, USA) If you are going into the woods, or the "Sandbox" this book is an excellent preparation and handbook. The author outlines essentials for survival and rescue. My favorite topics included: instructions on how to assemble and use a survival kit. The only things I might add to his list of handy multitask items would be Honey, in little portion packs you can swipe from the coffee shop as it is not only an excellent concentrated food source, but it has antibiotic properties as well to protect against infection. Honey has also been used since ancient times topically as an ointment for wounds and burns for the same reason; and it provides an air tight flexible seal over the wound plus it's sticky and will help to hold a dry dressing in place. Sugar packets are useful both for energy and to stop bleeding from wounds. Just sprinkle the sugar into the wound, and apply pressure. Baking Soda is another item I might consider taking for it's multipurpose uses. For dehydration it can be added with salt to water to maintain electrolyte balance, for hygiene it can be used to wash the skin, clothing, eating utensils, and to brush your teeth. For wet rashes and bug bites it can be applied as a poultice or paste to the injured area and it helps to draw out the poison or stinger if present. It also helps relieve the itch. Baking Soda can also be taken in water to relive an upset stomach.
Another favorite topic were the chapters on medical care and finding things to use as medicine. I'm in the medical field so I'm into that kind of stuff. I liked it so well, I sent one to my Dad who is going up to the boundary waters this spring (The Essential Survival Guide) and this one (Desert Survival) to my son in law who's over there right now. They both have much info that is applicable in any setting but the special editions also have additional info for specific climates.
I say it's short and sweet because it is just the bare facts. Instructions on how to survive and be rescued: what you need to do and how to do it. I felt it was realistic in it's explanations. The book is small, thin and narrow but sturdily constructed so it is a guide that will stand up to some abuse; a practical hand book.
I wasn't impressed by .. Jay Stanley () SAS Desert Survival. The title has a definite attraction, but after reading it, I have to say that I was less than impressed. Water collection is one of the most essential concerns of any desert survivor, yet there isn't much here at all on the subject of locating ground water sources or planning water consumption in desert survival conditions. What there was included the usual over-optimistic advice on things like solar stills and transpiration bags, with certain curious 'tips' such as getting drinkable water from the sap of birch trees (in the desert?).
The section on map navigation isn't detailed enough to be of any real use to anyone (nor does it contain much on using compass or GPS in desert terrain). Nor is there much about common desert dangers such as sandstorms, snakes, heat illness, hypo-natremia, etc. What there is includes a lot of regurgitated advice from other SAS books on animal traps and fishing, not very applicable to arid desert. I can't recommend this book for anyone attempting an education in desert survival skills.
OK, but not the best desert survival book by .. Peter () I bought this book awhile back along with others in the SAS survival series. As a desert survival book it's merely OK; there are a lot better books on desert survival out there. The SAS book has little or no first aid information, and the sections on navigation and desert hazards like sandstorms, snakes, etc. aren't detailed enough to be of much use. A much better book on this subject would be something like The Ultimate Desert Handbook by Mark Johnson which is much more comprehensive and detailed, with more useful illustrations.
SAS Jungle Survival : by Barry Davis by .. () I do not believe anyone will be disappointed with any of the Survival books, that Mr. Davies writes. No nonsense! The advice is simple and put forward in terms anyone would be able to understand. How to live on little, when your life is in peril. This book is worthy of any survival bookshelf, unless one were a native to the jungle regions, or already a master at jungle survival.
