The Postal Service Guide to U.S. Stamps: Updated Stamp Values 5 by .. Bethany I. Schryburt ()

A Great Book For Someone Getting Back Into the Hobby 5 by .. K. Palmer (Illinois)
I collected stamps in the 1970s and 1980s as my grandmother was a big collector and I was fascinated by her stamp books, which were terrific. I had a pretty good collection myself just from her discards. But when she passed away over 20 years ago, I lost interest in the hobby. But recently, I pulled out my old stamp book and got the urge to get it back into shape and to get it current. And the 33rd edition of the US Postal Service's book is a great book to use as a guide to get back in the hobby. First, it shows pictures of almost every stamp ever issued by the USPS over the years in glorious color, so it is a great book just to look at. But I use it to see just how daunting it will be to catch up to collecting almost 25 years of stamps because the USPS has issued considerably more stamps on an annual basis than they did before. I also use it as a guideline as to how much I should pay for stamps on online auctions to make sure I don't overpay by too much. The size of the book makes it easy to use as well.

I've really enjoyed rediscovering this hobby and really think this book has made it even more fun!

Very helpful book 4 by .. J. Heinze ()
If you are looking for a high and low price for an individual US stamp, this is the book for you. It does not price by the condition of the stamp, but the book will give you some idea of the price range a stamp would fall within.

fantastic book! 4 by .. Jessica B Pudavick (winnipeg, manitoba)
i just thought i'd write in saying what an amazing book this is. i purchacd it a few months back, and even though its from 2003, it combines indivual prices of all stamps, and first day covers. everything is in color and very easy to read and move around in. i find its a bit better then Scott's. as fdc's are included right there on the page.

Very good introduction to SQL Server 2005 5 by .. Tech Junkie (Spring, TX United States)
This book is a very good way to get started with Microsoft SQL Server 2005. It covers all of the major subjects that an administrator will need to deal with. Myself and another on my staff have used this book to set up and manage SQL Server in a very short time with no formal training. We do not believe that it is the only book or resource that we will need on this very powerful database system, but we each have a copy because it is the best place to start with unfamiliar SQL subjects. We found that it is also a good book just to browse so we each have a copy.

I am giving it five stars because no other book that we have reviewed for this purpose does as well. We are both familiar with other database systems, such as Progress and MySQL, Access, and others, but neither of had used the Microsoft program before.

Very Poor Organization 2 by .. Steven Kerrick (Santa Ana, CA USA)
I've had a terrible time learning SQL Server programming from this book. I've got lots of Oracle experience, so picking up T-SQL should have been fairly easy.

My main complaint is that the book is horridly edited and organized. For example, at one point I found that the author was using the "GO" command in his scripts, and I didn't remember reading what that meant. I went to the index and found where "GO" was introduced. It was a in a "Tip" box more than 20 pages back -- explained in brief, with no example, completely out of any context, and "GO" didn't appear in any scripts until 20 pages later. Now why would the author do that? This book is full of things like that.

He struggles a bit with English, too. For example, he says a function is "threefold" if it returns one of three possible values. The language doesn't prevent learning from the book, but it makes for a jarring ride.

I've pushed my way through the book and I'm better off than when I started, so I'll give it 2 stars instead of 1. But man, am I frustrated.

Very comprehensive book 5 by .. Marcelo Budicin (Buenos Aires, Argentina)
What I like on this book is that it is very comprehensive.
All components of SQL Server 2005 are described in it. The description of each component is clear. Besides a couple of sentences, I did not have any problems to understand the content of this book. I found some small typographical errors, but as a whole I think that this is a very gook book.

Poor rewrite of old book, "old" version of SQL Server 2005 1 by .. Eric Riggins (Washington DC)
Looking for a book to use as a training guide. First of all, this book was written using a BETA version of SQL Server 2005. Many areas changed from beta to full release of SQL Server 2005, therefore already a big worry about this book. Secondly, for a beginners book to only talk about installing SQL Server in Chapter 16 (part III of the book!!!) is poor and shows a book thrown together in my opinion. It looks as if this is an update of his previous book (?) where there is text clearly about SQL Server 2000 with an "add on" sentence saying how SQL Server 2005 has changed this. For beginners this is confusing. They dont care about SQL Server 2000 or if they did they would buy a SQL Server 20005 Beginners Guide.
Other examples are where the author gets quite technical but then new functionality (such as the APPLY operator) "is outside the scope of this book". However deep security areas that are discsussed are "inside" the scope of this book.
I would recommend you either wait for the rewrite or even better, update of this book that uses the correct version of SQL Server 2005, or look elsewhere. I sent this book straight back. Sorry

Excellent Book 5 by .. Societe General (Athens,Greece)
This book provides a solid introduction to SQL Server 2005. The coverage is comprehensive. (Very few books attempt to cover the relational database engine with Transact-SQL, database administration, performance tuning, Analysis Services and XML in one volume and this one does it successfully.) The writing is clear and I did not have any problems to understand all topics discussed in it.
My IT department also used the book to learn how the implementation of stored procedures and UDFs can be done using C#. The coverage of this topic is not too deep, but the existing examples and the given description allowed us to implement several routines and to evaluate the use of CLR for our department.
My opinion is that this book is not for complete beginners. But, if you have some knowledge of relational database systems and wants one book as a source, I can recommend it to you.

Good compilation of information available elsewhere 3 by .. lhorton ()
I think this book serves as a nice way to look at schools beside each other; however, I have used both this and the Princeton Review version, and I like theirs much better. Here, you really just get copy-paste sections from the school's websites. The schools write the majority of the information given. I feel that I am capable of getting that information of their websites, and what I was looking for in a book like this was a (at least slightly) more distanced assessment of the schools.

Over all, I would recommend this book for information seekers.

Excellent book 5 by .. K. Thomas (New York)
The book was true to description- Never used. It still had the CDs in it. The price was excellent ($10.00 for a book that cost $100+) and delivery was fast.

Required for school, but going into my personal library 4 by .. Victoria Powell (Benton, AR)
I am taking BSN courses and this text is required. The book includes a CD which I have not had the time to review.

The text is very good. It has a great flow from system to system. There are many color photos to explain the various findings. The book is through and I especially love the red text in the borders that explains the criticial thinking of the assessment coupled with the finding.

I own a Mosby's guide from my previous Nursing classes. I thought it was good until I purchased Bates. This is my new favorite examination text and one I will keep in my personal library for years to come.

Bates' Guide to Physical Examination and History Taking, Ninth Edition with E-Book 5 by .. M. Dawson ()
Good book and a geat resource. This particular work places the patient History and exam in a logical and systematic approach with illustrations and study helps - a keeper.

Great Buy 5 by .. Neeral Shah ()
I am a Physician Assistant Student and i have to admit that every semester we are required to buy books and at the end of every semester i sell my books buy. This was the only one i did not sell back. Its great for a person who is beginning the medical field and is great for someone who just wants to brush up on technique. The CD located in the back of the books is really not that helpful because it skips critical parts of the physical exam however its good to see how to do certain things. Most of the books chapters are well organized except for the HEENT chapter bc its all over the place. However i LOVE my Bates and i still use it on clinical rotations.

Bates' Guide to PE-Great information 4 by .. COREY COOP ()
Great book on physical examination and history taking. Will recommend to other healthcare/medical providers.

Old and Useless Book 1 by .. Jim (Buffalo, NY)
This book is basically useless. It really does not give you what you need to know in order to grade coins. The population counts are from 2004 and have dramatically changed since then.

If you want to learn how to grade coins I suggest the following:
Beginners: Photograde: Official Photographic Grading Guide for United States Coins, 19th Edition
Intermediate: The Official American Numismatic Association Grading Standards of United States Coins (Official American Numismatic Association Grading Standards for United States Coins)
Experts only(Mint State Grading):
How to Grade U.S. Coins

I quite like this pricey 'ultra' modern resource: here's why 4 by .. Mendicant Pigeon (pdx, or United States)
This book actually rates three stars because it is quite expensive for what you get, but it is still a really excellent resource for those who do one of three things: 1) collect Modern Commemoratives; 2) collect US Mint Bullion Coins; 3) collect Ultra Moderns (I say ultra moderns because until this book's new definition of moderns, traditional coin collectors deem all 20th century coins 'moderns'. This one begins the count from the year 1965; although interestingly it includes the Proofs, which for this particular time sequence is very important. This book is good in the sense that the Forward really makes one excited about collecting these ultras where it discusses the genre and explains that this is a legitimate area of collecting interest where one can build a substantial collection rapidly and for a relatively small cost. In this day and age of inflated coin prices for some of the rarer and more desirable coins amongst even the traditional moderns, there has to be a niche for new comers, kids, etc. and this niche is it. It is also good in the sense that it give census numbers of these coins as graded by NGC and explains how one should extrapolate certain of these numbers (for instance, that there is a great number of MS 68 Silver Eagles that go unslabbed because of the high minimum grade reqt. of submitters). The reviewer below protested that this count is too narrow, but the point is that this is a book as published by NGC and doesn't purport to have the entire census universe numbers contained in it. This is still nice because most coin collectors, such as myself, will subscribe to just one or two services and so will have access to those companies' census counts but not others. So, while I have PCGS' pop. reports and ltd. access to ICG's, this NGC count is a handy reference for me. I was especially pleased about two aspects of this book's layout. The biggest one was the 'Rarities and Notable Varieties' notes section in which the 'key' coins are highlighted. For instance, I collect Jeffersons but was not aware of the special, so-called 'specimen' coins minted in 1994 and 1997, both of which I will now look out for. The other nice thing is the 'NGC Quick Tip' which warns the reader of certain quirks that one should look out for, for instance scraping on the Eisenhower Dollar on Eagle Feathers and Obverse, just as a coincidence, I had set aside a large number of these recently wondering what was up with this. In future, I will focus in on those areas before making a purchase. Finally, this book is the only handy reference I know that devotes an entire section complete with pictures of all of the Modern Commemoratives to date. This latter sub-section of coins is one that may yet emerge as an important branch of American Numismatics. For those of you who wish to get a head start, this is a good resource to turn to for now. Oh, and finally, finally, for the very first time in a coin book an entire section is devoted to the Bullion coins that have been issued by the Mint and this area too is becoming ever more popular, and is one that I believe will get ever stronger in years to come (even stronger, in my opinion, than the Modern Commmemorative genre). Anyway, even though this book is spendy when new, I can recommend getting it, possibly discounted, if you have an interest in any of the areas above that I have mentioned.

Misleading Title 2 by .. An A.I. Guy (Boston, MA USA)
The thing that troubles me most about this book is that it's description leads the prospective reader to believe that it is about grading coins. It is not. The book description implies that it provides a grade-dependent population census of modern coins. It does not (imho). The description implies that the book provides tendencies in the appearances of various coins. This it does do to a degree (These paragraphs in the book are the source of the two lonely stars characterizing my review) .
There is but one page in this entire book on grading - even then just definitions. (I don't count the advertisements that tout the care with which the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) "objectively" grades and certifies coins (conveniently, NGC is one of the publishers of the book). There are neither examples nor guidelines to DIY grading of coins.
Then there is the census. The population numbers provided in the book consist only of those coins certified by the NGC, and the NGC alone. The census does not include coins certified by other third party grading agencies such as PCGS, ICG or ANACS. Furthermore, the book also does not acknowledge that most purchases of modern commemorative coins, mint sets and proof sets do not get certified. So what, you say? The point, I believe, of providing a grade-dependent census is to establish the relative rarity of a given coin at a given grade. As rarity and grade together are the dominant determiners of value, an NGC-only census is of no value.
The truly sad thing is that the topic of the bulk of material in the book would be warmly welcomed by the numismatic community - both beginners and advanced collectors -- if done well. This book deserves a second edition, maybe not the same authors or same publisher (no conflict of interest there!) to create a reference book on modern coins that actually has utility to coin collectors. The genius in marketing at NGC who thought it would be a good idea to push out a less than mediocre book allegedly on grading modern coins just leads me to recommend the VASTLY superior book on grading coins put out by PCGS - their biggest competitor! Doh!
