I am wrting to let others know if you want the mathematical and physics involved in stereos, then this is your book. It started out slow, and simple and then jumped right in to complex and over my head. I was looking for a book to give basic advice and wiring diagrams, but this did not happen.
It is a very good book if I was more into the technical side of audio. Any way so it you want simple, tell you how then look to another book

Wouldn't recommend this book if your a beginner. Some of the explanations that Joe Pettitt gives about car audio are not well described and there's no full detail. I believe by the time you finish reading this book you will have a better understanding about car audio, but I don't believe your understanding will be great enough to begin your own install though. I would recommend The Car Stereo Cookbook by Mark Rumreich over this book.

In the automotive how-to book market, there aren't a lot of good titles on car stereo. That shortage makes High Performance Car Stereo by Joe Pettitt, which would be a good read even if the market was crowded, an important reference on the subject.
The book's best quality is that it's written by a car audio DIY and is aimed at do-it-yourself car audio enthusiasts. Joe Pettitt is a long-time automotive technical writer who's worked at many of the major performance car and truck magazines and has written for "Autotronics". He is is currently on staff at Sport Truck Magazine. Another good quality of this book is Author, Pettitt, and Publisher, CarTech Books' S-A Design division, made a conscious decision to leave discussions of basic electrical and audio theory to other titles which better cover those subjects. High-Performance Car Stereo focuses on teaching the intermediate car stereo DIY the technical information he or she needs to upgrade or build-from-scratch most any automotive sound system. Now, this means the reader must bring a fair amount of technical knowledge to the table when reading this book, but that's a good thing as it forces the technically-challenged to other, more basic texts, first. Regardless of whether you want to just install improved speakers and an EQ in your existing system or add all-new and better equipment just for pleasure or build a totally-killer, mega-power, custom audio masterpiece for IASCA competition, you'll find information in this book. It's got chapters on head units, amps, speakers, EQs and a lot more. Appropriately, the book ends with a chapter profiling two installations: a 92 Chevy pick-up and an 84 Pontiac Firebird. All of this is written in Pettitt's easy-going, sometimes humorous style. While I have a basic knowledge of electronics and audio technology, I was not well-versed in advanced car stereo subjects, so I learned a lot of useful information in reading this book. Before I read it, I knew enough about car audio to be dangerous. When I finished the book, I felt I knew enough to build a pretty decent system. Now, all I need is a bunch of money to do it. While High-Performance Car Stereo is a really good book, it falls short of being an outstanding one because of problems with graphics and pictures. There are a lot of charts and diagrams in it, few of which are numbered. This is a problem when the text refers to a specific drawing but the reader, who might be learning the subject the first time, cannot tell which drawing is being identified. I was confused by this problem several times. There are places in the book where pictures are published in the wrong orientation. There were a few instances of images not matching captions. A fair amount of the pictures in the last chapter, which could have been the most valuable images in the book, are too small to usefully illustrate the activity or situation the Author intended to show. It would have been better to either use less images or devote more space to that final chapter so the photos could have run larger. The last little quirk of this book was the cover. The largest picture on it shows the interior of a Corvette with a killer sound system installed in place of the stock stereo. Unfortunately, all you get is a picture. There is nothing in the book specific to high-end car audio in Corvettes. Hopefully, if there's a second edition of High-Performance Car Stereo, it will have an enlarged section on installations along with some material about the Corvette system pictured on the cover. In the meantime, if you're looking to learn about how to understand, select and install high-end car stereo equipment, buy this book.

Wish I had had this book years ago - would have saved lots of time and money and would have avoided some repair mistakes that were difficult to take care of after the fact. Advice on equipment to buy was excellent and is very close to what I now have after years of working with various repairs.

This is a "must have" book for anyone either getting into slot cars or returning to slot cars as an adult. Robert Schleicher has an obvious passion for "true to scale" slot cars and doesn't let that passion get in the way of writing clearly. The book is a great source of information for the home slot car enthusiast particularly for 1/32 scale and to a lesser degree HO. He is not into "hopping up" slot cars and even states that it is more fun to win a race between equally matched cars using luck and skill than to win having the faster car. He does however, cover how to customize and optimize as well as performance match "ready to race" slot cars. The pictures are spectacular while the layouts and cars are worthy of the pictures. The book has quite a few typographical errors but weather you want to collect slot cars, build a detailed layout, both or just assemble your slot car set on the floor and race, this is a great book.

"Racing and Collecting Slot Cars" is a book for every slot car racer and collector. It's primary focus is HO and 1/32 scale slot cars; however, the information provided applies to all scales. This book is well layed out. Each chapter exploring a specific aspect of these table top racers. The photos (many in color) are EXCELLENT. Best book around on the topic. No book is perfect, but Mr. Schleicher does a great job.

Overall a very informative and useful guide book to those who wants to start a home track or race at clubs competitevely with RTR cars. Rob did a good job in explaining into details mostly, what beginners miss out when preparing their cars to put on the tracks.

I've spent time between the covers of just about every brake systems book out there, and I believe Walker's book strikes an ideal balance between the objective "math and science" explanations and the subjective "seat of the pants" examples (like Jack the Energy Guy, on Page 12). For the hands-on reader, the last four chapters are dedicated to hardware upgrades on various types of vehicles, with sidebars on impacts to system gain and system balance. While there is no "Design an Appropriate Brake System From Scratch" chapter, the information required to complete such an exercise is found throughout the logically-ordered chapters of this book.
I'm glad to have this book in my collection!

We have known and worked with James for a long time, and glad to see all of that brake knowledge put down in one place. There is a ton of mis-information out there on the Interweb, and here's a place to hear the truth from a real, live brake engineer. This book does a nice job of separating fact from friction.

Some good info. Would like to see more practical application info on MC selection and whole car brake system design and updating examples and why each unit was selected. Book still falls short of really practical info that you would use to upgrade or design a system from scratch. Surprised that shocks VS brake performance was not mentioned.

Product Description This report was created for global strategic planners who cannot be content with traditional methods of segmenting world markets. With the advent of a “borderless world”, cities become a more important criteria in prioritizing markets, as opposed to regions, continents, or countries. This report covers the top 2000 cities in over 200 countries. It does so by reporting the estimated market size (in terms of latent demand) for each major city of the world. It then ranks these cities and reports them in terms of their size as a percent of the country where they are located, their geographic region (e.g. Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, North America, Latin America), and the total world market. In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have been occasionally asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services across cities. The purpose of the studies is to understand the density of demand within a country and the extent to which a city might be used as a point of distribution within its region. From an economic perspective, however, a city does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries. To an economist or strategic planner, a city represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another. In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for the world\'s major cities for "men\'s and boys\' tailored overcoats, topcoats, and car and suburban coats" for the year 2007. The goal of this report is to report my findings on the real economic potential, or what an economist calls the latent demand, represented by a city when defined as an area of dominant influence. The reader needs to realize that latent demand may or may not represent real sales. For many items, latent demand is clearly observable in sales, as in the case for food or housing items. Consider, however, the category "satellite launch vehicles". Clearly, there are no launch pads in most cities of the world. However, the core benefit of the vehicles (e.g. telecommunications, etc.) is "consumed" by residents or industries within the world\'s cities. Without certain cities, in other words, the market for satellite launch vehicles would be lower for the world in general. One needs to allocate, therefore, a portion of the worldwide economic demand for launch vehicles to both regions and cities.
