C. Smith () With all the patches/"Book"s/updates/changes that have come out since LOTRO's release, this book is quite outdated in information. Some of the training guide info is off, map areas released after original release like Evendim are not included. Is still a good book for a beginner to get the hang of some of the basics and basic maps.
Grossly Outdated by .. M. Stephens (CA) This guide has some usefulness but is VERY VERY outdated. Many of the skills and map locations are just wrong or missing. It's an MMO. They change constantly and Turbine has been updating almost monthly. Bound guides just don't work for MMOs. Only option is to subscribe to some online strat guide that keeps up to date or just go to the LOTRO Lorebook.
Nice book by .. L. Foretich () If this book only had maps, it would be worth the price. The maps are excellent.
However, the book also has information about each class, listing the skills and even diagramming how to use them at beginner and advanced level. And there is a large section on crafting.
You can get an electronic version of this book (basically a passworded e-book) from the publishers website, which was updated. Personally, I prefer to have a paper copy. I can get updated information from many websites.
I have read reviews that criticise this book because it's doesn't contain something they had in another game, and I nearly didn't get the book because of them. But the book is great, so I guess it was just a case of "you can't please some people".
Useful, but needs an update by .. M. Rosen (Haverford, PA) It's always useful to have these Prima Guides for complicated games like LOTRO - the only shame is that I didn't get it until just around when the new expansion (Evendim) came out - I wish they would release a free supplement for people who have already bought the book.
Very Usefull by .. J. Walker () This book is a real time saver for LOTRO players. The maps are very usefull as are the descriptions of player classes, traits, deeds, etc. It gets the beginning player off to a fast start, and is still usefull at level 50.
The game has a well developed PvP, in Monster Play. Any review that says that LOTRO does not have PvP is suspect.

more nessicary then you might think by .. Ian (California, USA) If you think that you would not need a strategy guide to get through the Two Towers, which is basically a hack and slash game, you would be very wrong...dead wrong in fact. Although at first look, the game looks like just a lot of button mashing and waving your sword around, there is a fair amount of strategy to make it through. For example, in the 3rd level (The gates of Moria) you have to fight the watcher in the water to finish the level. When I first fought, I assumed that I could just hold down the "Block" button, and block the tentales. 3 tries later, my frustration point was at a boil. Then I looked at the book, and discovered that I had to tap the button rapidly to block the tentacles. On my next try, I killed the beast with ease. In Balins tomb, I had a lot of trouble defeating the cave troll and finishing the level. Then I learned after reading the book that I had to do a double hack, then hop back with the L2 button. These types of examples are found all throughout the book, where it reveals all the nessisary tips that you would need to make it through the game. Other then these life saving stratigies, the guide has maps to guide you through (altough they are kind of vauge in detail). They also reveal all the cheat codes, and how to get the secret unlockable charachter. All in all, a worthy guide. The good: Reveals life saving tactics has all the cheat codes overall, a good buy The not so good: maps are vauge

Customer reviews Sonic and the Secret Rings by .. Caleb Wright (Corinth, NY USA) I have been a fan of Sonic the Hedgehog for many years. When I heard that Nintendo would be selling Sonic video games, I was a little skeptical about the quality, but they didn't disappoint. This player's guide also reflects the quality of the game with detailed maps and startegies. It's a must for any Sonic fan.
Prima does it again by .. Lord Azalin (Wisconsin) If you must know where everything is then this is a guide book for you. Prima does a great job and they even have a website available for updates to their books (do this if you like guidebooks and do MMO games).
Not Enough For The Speed Demon by .. Michael Kerner (Brooklyn, New York U.S.A.) Although Sonic The Hedgehog has been one of the most loved video game characters since his debut back in 1991, there is absolutely yet to be a strateegy guide since Sonic Adventure DX that can display a definitive reflection through the maps and routes. For Sonic's latest adventure on the Wii, this guide doesn't hit the nail on the head. Sonic & The Secret Rings guide from Prima, doesn't display a lot to help you battle your way through each of the courses of the game. It is unfortunate, because the maps aren't as displayed vividly, and it doesn't actually pinpoint certain areas to help you find hidden items, and features to go against some of the bosses in the game. All in all, I really think Sega should've made the strategy guide themselves instead. The secret is I really don't suggest you get this if you get the game.

Batmanbrb (Seymour, IN United States) I bought this book just to help me out on Minas Tirith - Top of the Wall - because I couldn't figure out exactly what I was supposed to be doing. I did refer to this book a couple of times along the way. I have just finished the game and re-playing some of the levels with different characters just for fun. If you are having any kind of trouble with this game, this guide offers some good tips. It is excellent at showing you how to beat all the bosses and finding missed items and offers some good strategies for each level. If you don't want to read any hints, then don't read the next few sentences. The guide book tells you how to defeat the Nazgul at the "Black Gate" with Aragorn. If you are having too much trouble doing this (as I did), change your character to Gandalf. Gandalf's magic arrows do ten times more damage to the Nazgul than if you use Gimli, Aragorn, or Legolas.

Mike Hluska (Munster IN USA) If you bought the LOTR The Return of the King strategy guide from Prima, the The Third Age strategy guide is nothing like the Return of the King guide. It was still useful and informative.
Very inaccurate guide by .. J. Gordon (Weston, FL USA) This guide has many errors as far as what certain character (enemy) classes are immune to. The game itself is not that hard and you really don't need the maps in this guide for anything. So this guide basically fails at the one thing it could have been useful for. Really, for the money that Prima makes selling these guides, there is no excuse for putting out a shoddy product filled with mistakes. As another reviewer said, you can find better, more accurate guides online. This is definitely one guide that you should pass on and just save your money. Even if you loved this game like I did, this guide is not worth the investment (even for a few dollars used - I got mine cheap and ended up just giving it away since it's pretty useless).
You can find a better walkthrough online by .. Xena (Ancient Greece) This walkthrough was horrible. Yes, it tells you where to go, but I rely on all the fine points. The information is, in total, WRONG. I spent almost half the game building up this one "skill", because the "Witch-king" is vulnerable to it. Turns out he ISN'T vulnerable to it, the book had wrong information, and while in a fight with the King of the Nazgul, it isn't good to not have any attacks. (*.-) So right now as the Witch-King is waving his mace around on the PS2, I am writing this to let you all know that it's a better idea to just find one online, or just stop cheating. (*.*) By the way, He is NOT Vulnerable to "Bind Spirit".
it covered what needed to be covered by .. Joe Sherry (Minnesota) Prima's Strategy Guide for the Playstation 2 game "Lord of the Rings: The Third Age" is a mixed bag in regards to how helpful it is. For my needs, I found the guide to be quite helpful. To start with, there is quite a bit of information on each character and which of the stats should be improved for each character, and which skills are the most valuable for that character to learn. There are sections of the guide focusing on all of the weapons, armor, and items in the game. There is a bestiary at the end of the guide giving stats on all of the enemies. All of this is nice, but the real reason most people purchase a strategy guide is the full game walkthrough.
The walkthrough itself is the part of the guide which may give the most help and cause the most confusion/frustration. What will help the most is that the guide gives a very good run down on what it is that you are supposed to, in what order you should do it (in those instances you have a choice), and what some of the best tactics are to help you succeed. The guide, in text form, gives description of the goals, enemies, and what items are won or found in the area. There are some boss strategies included. This isn't a very complex game so the general strategies the guide gives are really good enough (use crippling attacks or Arrows of Sleep when they work, use powerful attacks) for what the game requires. In this manner the guide was quite helpful and I was able to complete the game with 100% of the tasks/quests completed.
The downside of the walkthrough is a lack of clarity and a little bit of inaccuracy. There are maps at the beginning of each chapter with numbers relating to which event is happening at which location. Maps are usually excellent tools for working through a game. The trouble here is that the maps are very vague. Imagine a map of the United States. It's a fairly small map and you know that Minnesota is somewhere to the north and in the center of the country. Suppose there are only a few main roads that you can possibly take to get to Minnesota from Georgia. If the map doesn't identify which road you are on or where exactly you are starting from on the map, you may end up getting to Minnesota but you won't know where exactly you are until you get there. That is pretty much what the maps in the guide are like. Some levels are better, others are worse. I do feel that the text description overcomes the flaws with the maps, but there is no quick glancing at the map to get a grasp of where you are.
The other downside is a question of accuracy. The guide will list times where Crippling Attacks (an attack which will delay the turn of an enemy, it is incredibly valuable) are to be used but it turns out that the enemy is really immune to it (and vice versa). This happens more often towards the end of the guide and since the strategies are typically fairly simple this inaccuracy is easily overcome, but it is a little irritating when you waste a crippling attack over a more powerful attack in a difficult battle.
I think I would have preferred a few more enemy charts and better maps within the walkthrough section, but overall I didn't have a problem with this guide. It helped me clear the game 100% (I'm sure I would have missed something) and to get all the best armor and weapons until I got too lazy to follow directions on the last chapter. By no means is this the best guide ever, but it helped me finish the game and it covered all of the information that was actually needed for me to make it through the game.
-Joe Sherry
For a strategy guide, it was not very good by .. No Sanity Available () Everyone usually looks at a strategy guide at once in their life, whether it be for a Role Playing game, a Teen game, a Mature game, or a Everyone game. I've looked at bunches of strategy guides in my life, and, to be truthful, I've seen guides in magazines that are better. It tells you about the characters, the guests, the items, and so on. But the guide itself....
I've seen guides with mistakes before, after all, you can't catch every mistake. But this book abounded with them. The book got confused with what item was here, and what item was there. It'll say an item is in one place, but its a different piece of equipment. Where that equipment is supposed to be, is the piece that was supposed to be in the other spot.
There is enough typos and grammatical errors that it isn't even funny. One is funny. Maybe even two. But any more than that, and its utterly ridiculous.
And the enemy strategies. Wow. They really botched that up. The strategies in themselves were good, until they contradicted themselves. For example, the giant elephants (I forget what they're called) have little cards with stats, and a little spot in the back of the book with stats. If you look, it'll say things like Slow: Immune. However, if you go into the middle where the strategy is, it says to use a Crippling attack, which works really good against them (which also means they are effected). However, Crippling attacks are slow attacks, and the elephants are immune to them.
Another case, the Witch King of Angmar, 3rd battle. It says Eowyn is a good asset. Hello! My people do 20,000-40,000 damage per attack, and she does a measly 2500 damage! How is that an asset? Also, it says he is vulnerable to Bind Spirit spells, like Silence Evil. It also says that on the card and in the back. But he is immune!
The Evil Mode help isn't even help. And sometimes it doesn't even give a complete list of items achieved.
I do NOT reccommend this guide to someone who actually expects to be decently helped. Yes, it helps. Just not very much. This book is almost worthless. It makes you think the writers didn't even play it or know what they were talking about, some of that information is so off target. Find a new strategy guide, by someone else. Or, go to a FAQ page. They're more useful than this wad of paper.
Trust me, do not buy this book, unless you want to know obvious music. Like item and character descriptions. And a list of skills. If I could, I'd take it back. It isn't really needed, anyways.

Karen L. Mcginty (Boise, ID United States) I haven't played many games of this type, but I'm a huge Tolkien fan so I decided to try the game. I have to be honest-I couldn't even get out of the Shire ( the first level) until I bought this guide! I ended up using it religiously along the way, because there were many sections where I wouldn't have had any idea what I was supposed to do otherwise. For instance, there's a section in Moria where, without the guide, I would *never* have figured out where I was supposed to go, even though I religiously explore every nook and cranny when playing these types of games. Once I bought the guide, it took me about a week to finish the game. Since then, I've decided to play it again, without referring to the guide, to see if I can make it all the way through by memory. The book is very comprehensive, and avoids using terms that the casual gamer wouldn't understand-it doesn't talk over your head, and it's very straight forward and easy to understand. The screen shots are helpful, so that you can see what sections of the game they're referring to. As a little added perk, this book, while showing you all of the ins and outs, still leaves a couple of tiny goodies out-not essential ones, just a couple little perks, so it still pays to explore as much as possible to see if you can find them. To me, that added to the fun, and I didn't feel like the book was doing *all* of the work for me. For instance, the book doesn't mention that, if you can find Gollum, you can get a little treat from him! I highly recommend this game guide; in fact, I'm off to the bookstore today to pick up Prima's game guide to another LOTR game!
lord of the rings: fellowship of the ring by .. () This is the first of the three books in the series The Lord of the Rings. In the beginning, a hobbit called Bilbo Baggins celebrates 111th birthday. He then disappears to go live with the Elves in a place called Rivendell, and leaves everything to his nephew, Frodo Baggins, including a mysterious and magical ring that he found long time ago. Frodo is advised by Gandalf to go to Rivendell, and to take the ring, and to never wear it. Gandalf fears that it might be the Ring of Power (the ring that belongs to the evil lord Sauron), so he goes to Rivendell where a council is met. Frodo agrees to take the ring to Mount Doom with the help of others this group form the Fellowship. As they go, they meet various encounters, and in the end of the book, Sauron's army fights the group and steals some of the Hobbits. I chose to read this book because I heard it was very popular. Also, I heard that the book was a fantasy book tied in with magic, battles, and a great quest. I liked reading it and I knew what was happening because I read the book The Hobbit. Then I decided to read the prologue. I also liked to read the book because it was full of adventure and danger. My favorite part was when Gandalf faced off the monster in the shadow of the mines of Moria. It started when the Fellowship began to make their way to Isengard. Gandalf decided to lead the group into a climb through the mountains. They noticed a large group of crows flying their way. Figuring that it was some of Sauron's spies, they tried to go through the ice caps of other mountains. Then Saruman the wizard tried to stop them. So they had no choice but to go through the mines of Moria where a monster lives. This is a fire-demon monster that lives. Gandalf tried to fight the monster but Gandalf and the monster fell and the Fellowship thought Gandalf died.
Read Me! by .. Keavy Ferrall (Cheyenne, Wy USA) Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring By J.R.R. Tolkien The Lord of the Rings The Fellowship of the Ring is an action packed magical thriller. It keeps you on edge with every flip of the page. The book begins with the old Bilbo Baggins planning for his one hundredth and eleventh birthday. Half the Shire's been invited! It looks as though it'll be a night to remember. When Bilbo vanishes during his birthday speech, he leaves the crowd in awe. Seeing as how he is now leaving, for another adventure, and shan't be returning, he leaves his precious Bag End and all his possessions behind. His heir and second cousin one-removed, Frodo Baggins now has to carry the responsibility of taking the One Ring to Mordor to be destroyed. To get to Mordor, Frodo must leave his beloved Shire and travel through Old forests, empty plains, and rocky mountains. He soon reaches Rivendale, with the help of a strange Rider, Aragorn, and an elf named Arwin. From there, Frodo and his three faithful companions, Merry, Pippin, and Sam become part of the Fellowship of the Ring. To find out more, read the book! I found this book to be delightful at all hours of the day for all ages! I highly recommend it if you're looking for a great adventure with out even leaving your couch!
A must have if you ... by .. Amanda Harris (Flanders, NY United States) This is a must have if you purchase the game. Now this is NOT the best game in the world. It is not advised to even purchase this game, it is slow... You'd be safer to go with the two towers. But if you do buy this game (probably for the same reason I did..which was it is LOTR and I just have to own it) this is the ideal companion for you. The beginning of the game is very very hard. It takes awhile to get around the Ringwraith riders, and when you finally do you go into another part of town where unless y ou know what you are doing you wont be able to find your way out. So dont expect the game to be simple, it isn't much fun, in fact it is quite aggrivating. But if you do buy the game you have to buy this so you actually know what you are doing, and not wandering around like a fool in the woods...as I was until I read some of this ;)
The Lord of the Rings:The Fellowship of the Ring JRR Tolkien by .. Becky Brooks (West Jordan, UT USA) Finally, a book I actually like, in and out! Tolkien amazes me with his ability to imagine the diverse characters and places in The Lord of the Rings. This book portrays leadership, and the long enduring of good in an evil world. I am very pleased with the detail that Tolkien puts into the novel so that the reader can understand completely each situation. Tolkien writes the book so that the readers feel as if it could be real. It's an outstanding novel that teaches us that we need to bear our burdens and stick together so that good can prevail in a world of such turmoil. Tolkien has made me think a lot more about my characteristics and whether or not I would be able to bear the ring. Would I be able to withstandthe temptation of putting on the ring? Or using it's power for my own good? It's an outstanding concept. This book leaves you in anticipation for the next. The suspense of what is going to happen next is nerve-racking. Overall, I just enjoyed the material, and I feel that Tolkein is a very experienced writer. He knows how to captivate readers, and enthral their minds into the book.

This is an excellent game I enjoy which isn't addictive as those crazy MMORPG's around today, and also very fun. I have been playing it alone and with my family (including my wife)for 9 months now and we had lots of fun at it. We havn't got bored of since we can change the game style in our skirmishes.
Its a huge upgrade compared to older fantastic strategy's (back then) such as age of empires.
Disappointed - Units stats riddled with typos by .. D. J. Turner () I recently purchased the strategy guide for the EA games title: Battle for Middle Earth II. I was primarily looking forward to the customary (and advertised) information on unit statistics and upgrades etc.
Unfortunately the tables that are supposed to contain this information in the book are riddled with typos.
- Many units have blanks or dashes instead of the appropriate stats
- Many units have letters in columns that should contain numbers and numbers in columns that should contain letters
- The unit upgrade information is referenced, but was totally omitted from the tables
If you are primarily interested in the unit statistics I would not recommend this guide.
