Product Description

If, as some have said, conservatives are ruled by facts and liberals by emotions, one would be hard-put to find a better illustration of the aphorism than popular radio talk-show host Phil Valentine's The Conservative's Handbook: Defining the Right Positions on Issues from A to Z. Initially his A-to-Z issues were developed as a primer to be posted on his Web site to bring his audience up to speed with today's events. When they proved so popular and informative with his audience, he realized he had struck a responsive chord, that the realities he had outlined spoke to a great number of people.

The Conservative's Handbook provides a conservative viewpoint on a wide range of ideas. Among them are guns, global warming, drugs, partial birth abortion, education, political correctness, entrepreneurs, and the wisdom of Ronald Reagan. In doing so, it covers the hot issues of today as well as perennial topics of interest. The knowledge he imparts is more than just information. It's ammunition for conservatives when they are caught up in discussions with friends and arguments with those on the Left.

Many arguments between liberals and conservatives degenerate into name-calling and unsubstantiated claims. The Conservative's Handbook distills those raw emotions and extraneous thoughts into a cohesive argument for conservative principles and values, covering the full array of today's fiscal and social issues in a manner that is comprehensive without being overwhelming.

This book may inform you, humor you, or enrage you. But if you approach it with an open mind, it will make you think and may cause you to change some of your opinions.

Conservative's Handbook review 5 by .. windsorsdad (Columbus, GA)
Anyone who wants to learn more about the principles of conservatism should read this book. It can be read from beginning to end or it can be read one chapter at a time. The foundation for conservatism is easily explained. It gives the long-time conservative or new to conservatism vital information to prepare him/herself for discussions with those who ascribe to the liberal/progressive belief system.

The cornerstone of any conservative's library 5 by .. Christopher Estep ()
I say without hyperbole that this is a book that every conservative should own and read. It presents the conservative worldview in a concise yet thorough, easy-to-read presentation.

Conservative positions and values are presented in an encyclopedic format, but written in a very conversational tone. While one would expect such a work to be dry akin to a textbook, I found it to be very engaging.

The Conservative's Handbook starts with the basic tenets of conservatism such as "America is good" and "Belief in God..." and "Character..." then moves into more specific issues like "Oppression should not be fueled by American capitalism" and "Xenophobia is the root of protectionism" and treats each subject thoroughly without going so far as be boring.

I particularly like the size and binding of the book. It's much smaller than a typical hardcover but wider than a trade paperback novel which makes it much easier to keep with me for reading on the train, at lunch, or when I just have a few minutes of personal time. The binding is very high quality as well with good material and strong stitching.

About the only negative thing I can say about the book is that Valentine occasionally repeats the worn out and inaccurate characterization of Senator McCarthyism. While the rest of the book is well-researched and footnoted, it's clear that his impressions of McCarthy are not from research but rather the "if you say it long enough and loud enough people will believe it" school of though. This doesn't detract from the book or Valentine's credibility, however. He's not alone in that area. For those desiring more information, I would recommend Blacklisted by History: The Untold Story of Senator Joe McCarthy and His Fight Against America's Enemies.

This book is an easy read and is suitable for long periods of study without getting boring but can easily be picked up for 10 minutes at a time.

A REAL handbook 5 by .. J. Douglas Linn (Sun City Hilton Head)
The Conservative's Handbook is exactly what this is. This little book is well-stocked with facts that are referenced fully in the back of the book. Also the smaller size of this book allows you to keep it in a briefcase if you are on the go. I have given this as a gift to my conservative friends and have always been please with their response after they read the book. This is one you should read, cover to cover, then you'll find yourself later going back to it for review, it is a true handbook and reference source. I personally liked the way this book attacked the "myths" ... and I must admit, I had fallen for one or two myself. This book is well-written and easy to use later to review the facts and data. If you buy one, I'm betting you'll buy another one later for a like-minded friend. Now you'll have something else to cling to besides your guns and your Bible.

Gives the Onion a run for its money 4 by .. Cioran Sellers (NYC)
I have to admit when I first spotted this it seemed the perfect gag gift for Christmas. I assumed it would either be a hundred blank pages or perhaps three pages long filled with crayon scrawls of George W. Bush's cowboy boots. But I was wrong, the book is actually filled with actual words and entries... though luckily I started reading before tossing it aside and well its dry humor blows away any stunt satire that I was expecting. Anyone who has remotely followed the conservative implosion of recent years will get a kick out of this book as it quietly and savagely lampoons conservative thought (my favorite exercise while reading was to read a bit of the book and then compare the lofty self serving sentiments against how conservatives have actualy governed these last eight years). So I recommend this book for those relatives who enjoy the Colbert Report say though there is the danger that the more dim witted will miss the joke...which makes it all the more sweeter, what?

Just read a few pages 5 by .. A. wilson (cincinnati,oh)
This is a great book. I just am baffled how anyone can be be a liberal. Unless you like sitting on your butt and are always saying, "Gimme, gimme, I am lazy and I want a free ride. Wonderful book and here is hoping Obama is out in 4 years!

Description:
We investigate the cross-time and cross-nation comparability of party left-right position measurements by expert surveys and the Comparative Manifesto Project (CMP). While expert surveys show party left-right positions to be mostly static, we find the CMP records systematic party movements for one-third of the parties analyzed. On the issue of cross-national comparability, we find cross-national variation in expert surveys is muted. They contain little more than the variation associated with reputations based on party-family affiliation. The CMP measurements, on the other hand, contain variation attributable to national party-system differences. We conclude with thoughts about why all of this is so and about how one might navigate the expert survey limitations depending on the question one wants to answer about democratic politics and policy making.

Product Description

· What real progress have we made to meaningfully reform America's schools?

· Is the racial make-up of today's schools, as Paul Street argues, in a state of de facto apartheid? · How do we begin to realize the equality that Brown v. Board of Education envisioned?

With an eye to the historical development of segregated education, Street examines the current state of school funding, disparities in teacher quality, student-teacher ratios, and more. Critical of "No Child Left Behind" and the school vouchers initiative, Street proposes no easy answers for creating equal educational opportunities for every American child. Instead, he offers both theoretical concepts and practical solutions for fulfilling the promise of integrated and equitable schools for all.

Product Description

This book presents a sociological study of how and why racial prejudice against members of a minority group comes to shape what happens to important political claims and aspirations of the group. Lawrence Bobo and Mia Tuan explore a lengthy controversy surrounding the fishing, hunting, and gathering rights of the Chippewa Indians in Wisconsin. The controversy started in 1974, when two Chippewa Indians were arrested for off-reservation fishing, and persisted into the 1990s. It involved the efforts of the Chippewa to assert their traditional spearfishing rights, which met with angry, racially charged responses from whites.

Bobo and Tuan develop a "group position" perspective on racial attitudes that takes account of the complex interplay of racial stereotypes and negative group feelings as well as the vested interests, collective privileges, and political threats that form the basis of racialized political disputes. They explore whether theories that explain race politics in the case of black-white relations are applicable to understanding Indian-white relations. The book uses a carefully designed survey of public opinion to explore the dynamics of prejudice and political contestation, and to further our understanding of how and why racial prejudice enters into politics in the United States.
