Product Description Shows and tells what busy people do every day to build houses, sail ships, fly planes, keep house, and grow food. "Positively guaranteed to please any small child."--The New Yorker. Full-color illustrations. Customer reviews Not The Original...Not by a long shot by .. MWF (Alabama) I bought this book thinking that even though it was abridged it would be as great as the original version. Boy was I wrong, some of the most entertaining and interesting parts of the book are GONE!
It was absolutely heartbreaking. I don't know why the publishers have altered a wonderful book leaving it hollow and less interesting than it should be. Do yourself a favor, find an original edition on ebay or half.com . You'll be much happier.
The Best! by .. L. Rinehimer (Seattle, WA) I bought this for my 4 year old and she absolutely loves it! It is really great for kids who have a million questions about how things work and it does a phenomenal job of explaining a typical process (e.g., building a house) from end to end (including laying sewage and water pipes underneath the ground). It gives the details that curious kids really want to know in a fun, darling way.
What Do People Do All Day? by .. Carol R. Naill (Arlington, VA) This delightful book for children which is enjoyable for parents to read as well wonderfully teaches us that we are all part of a family here to help each other with the gifts we have been given. For those with Faith, it is a happy way to show that we need each other, and to be grateful for each person, and appreciate what they do to make the world a better place; that each person is, as Pope Benedict said, "loved, willed and necessary."!
I love this book by .. Daisy (Brea, ca) I still have this book from when I was young; it is now 36 years old and has survived all of my children. I cannot bear to part with it and I will save it for my grandchildren. (Along with Richard Scarry's find your ABC's) I am buying a copy for my niece though so she doesn't have to do without. Thank you Richard Scarry
A GEM!!! MY ALL TIME FAVORITE CHILDREN'S BOOK (moooooore stars!!!!) by .. Andre Heeger (Hamburg, Germany) I got this one as a child, back in the sixties. My copy is in Dutch and although a little weathered it's not falling apart yet.
The copy I'm reviewing here is a reprint that misses several spreads, but sad though it may be, if you don't know about it you won't miss it.
Richard Scarry shows different "people" (animals in clothes), all kinds of professions, how they interact and how one depends on the other. And in doing so he introduces a child to society where we all depend on one another.
More than anything else he was responsible that I grew up to be free minded and open spirited person. Whatever a human being does for a living, if he/she does it with love he will make your day.
A policeman, a baker, a newspaper man, a writer, photographer or singer, the postman, the bus driver. We all depend on one another. And as long as we try our best to understand that and accept and respect our fellow citizens we will be on the right path.
His drawings are world famous. They're sweet and funny without being too simplistic. No matter what family, the rabbits, the mice or the pigs, even the worm, they're all lovely characters with different personalities.
It has always been my first choice as a gift for kids.

Product Description The Pig family takes a road trip to the beach for a picnic. The road is packed with hundreds of cars and trucks, vans and motorcycles, tractors and buses. The Pigs find chaos and adventure on the way to the beach and the opportunity to see vehicles they have never seen before. It's an exciting day! Customer reviews Childhood Favorite! by .. E. Lippert (Minnesota) This was one of my favorite books as a child and now it's one of my daughter's too! We read/look at it at least four times a day!
2nd generation of readers by .. William C. Turpin (Hattiesburg, MS) I read this book to my son, who thoroughly enjoyed it, and I now gave it to my grandson so my son can read it to him. It is a fun book.
Beloved Book by .. JBabb (San Francisco, CA United States) My 17 month old daughter received "The Best Word Book Ever" as a gift and immediately loved it. I purchased a couple other Richard Scarry books and "Cars and Trucks" has surfaced as the favorite, mainly because she loves searching for the gold bug in every scene. The other Richard Scarry books we own have the worm and bug hiding out here and there, but this is the only one that I've found, so far, that has the "where's gold bug" consistenly throughout. She loves it and I know that as she grows, she'll learn to love it for other reasons, including the kooky characters and funny storyline.
Children's book by .. Sarah (PA) I got one of my favorite Children's books in good shape and it came quickly.
My daughter loves The Goldbug Hunt by .. chippenziedeutch (Atlanta, GA) My 2-year old daughter *loves* this book, especially finding Goldbug. Although now she's done it so many times, she remembers where he is on each page, so even though it's still fun for her, it's lost a little of the mystery. Can anyone recommend any similar proto-'where's waldo'-type books for toddlers?

Product Description This storybook is a collection of entertaining stories and poems involving celebrated children's book artist Richard Scarry's lovable cast of animal characters. These happy tales and lively illustrations make this treasury of the very best of Scarry's work the best storybook ever. Customer reviews readingmother by .. Yelena Bandura (Gilbert, AZ) one of the greatest books for ages from 2 to 6. so much to see, excplain and imagine. compatible with the books by shel silverstein for younger kids.

Fabulous Scarry Bk. by .. D. Wiltse () Best Storybks. Ever...Reading bk. before sending to grandnephew. It's no wonder I like Scarry as this bk. was educationally fun, entertaining, exciting, etc. I'm sure that my grandnephew will love it! Thanks to Mr. Scarry.
Classic by .. S. Mason () I owned this as a child, and so did my husband. Both my son (9) and daughter (7) read (and were read to)this book. We just had to throw out our old copy because it was so well loved. I have to buy a new one. My daughter loves all of the chipmunk stories. I'm hoping none of the stories have changed. My favorite if "the polite elephant". Whenever my children go to friends houses I tell them to remember to be a polite elephant- and if you know the story, you know what a wonderful positive thing that is for children to know and emulate.
I grew up with this, now my son will to! by .. C. Stoneham (Texas) I used to spend HOURS just looking through the book at all the illustrations. The stories didn't always grab me, but the pictures did. There was SO much going on. I remember especialy the picture of the castle with the moat and all the mice. Man hours and hours of fun! Now, at 35, I have my first son. I bought this book 5 years ago "just in case." Looks like I get to watch him have fun with it too!
Charm Still Holds 20 Years Later by .. Kyle C. Rose (Hattiesburg, MS) I have loved this book since before I was old enough to walk. I bought this book to have a walk down memory lane and to remember my own road to literacy. This book was instrumental in my learning to read.
I recommend any Richard Scarry books to anyone with youngsters. They contain wonderful stories and are very educational.

Product Description Illus. in full color. The animal residents of Busytown learn useful lessons about manners, thoughtfulness, and caring in this perky, funny paperback. Customer reviews Great book to help 3 yr old understand manners by .. Mother of two young boys (Bahamas) I have used other books to teach my 3 yr old manners (such as Dora's Book of Manners etc) however this book has really helped my son understand much more than just "please" and "thank you". The book even goes into "whining pests"! It is great.
PLEASE AND THANK YOU BOOK by .. Patricia J. Whitaker (ks usa) I PURCHASED FOR MY 2 YEAR OLD GRANDSON. I THOUGHT IT WAS A LITTLE TO OLD FOR HIM. IT HAD A LOT OF WORDS AND YOU KNOW TODDLERS DON'T SIT STILL FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME. IT IS A GOOD BOOK BUT FOR OLDER TODDLERS.
exactly what I expected by .. Grace Kelly (Italy) well, as the title of the book suggests, this is a book about good manners, being polite and what not.
My 2 year old girl likes it already, although I think it would be even better for older children, they could follow more easily the stories with their favourite characters from Richard Scarry (great drawings!!!).
There are 7 short stories, each of them dealing with a particular topic: how to behave at parties, or with your parents asking for help, or in the street, or with neighbors. all of them are nice and funny. Both boys and girls will enjoy them, also thanks to the brilliant pictures!
To Save for Toddler to Pre-School Years by .. Laura L. Ocallaghan (Houston, TX, USA) Since it's difficult to get children to sit and read often, this book is a bit difficult without "real-life" situations and examples, so whenever I take my child out, I always try my best to make sure that she hears me say "please" and "thank-you" so she will learn those niceties as well as other cultural assistance that will make her a young lady throughout life even if life often doesn't accommodate. This book will be put up until she is ready for the harder concepts of visualization, until she can put reality together with the written word, but it is a WINNER!!!
Richard Scarry's Please and Thank-You Book by .. Claudia G. Newton (Floyds Knobs, IN United States) This book represents a childhood favorite of both my children. It is no longer available in book stores, so I was delighted to find used copies available so that I can buy it for my new grandson. So far I have been telling him the stories just from memory, but the original is priceless. We especially adore the "Pig Will, Pig Won't" story which teaches kids to have a positive attitude. The Pig Won't character is a wonderful example of what NOT to be, and is also great fun to imitate while reading the story.
Who will buy this book? "I will," says Pig Will.
"I won't," says Pig Won't.
So Pig Won't will miss all the fun.

Product Description Sally, Huckle, and Lowly are supposed to go sailing with Huckle and Sally's father, but it starts to rain. Father says they will have to stay inside and play, but their friend Rudolf von Flugel saves the day when he picks the kids up in his airplane-car and whisks them off to the airport for a fun day of sightseeing. Full of airport fun and "Scarry" mishaps. Customer reviews 3 year old son loves it by .. sam (los angeles, ca) we brought this book to the airport with us and my son had a blast comparing the pictures in the book with the real thing. real fun and goofy pictures too...
Great way to prepare a little one for a trip by .. lovemybulldog (Snoqualmie, WA) I bought this book in preparation for my 2 year old son's first plane ride to grandma's house. We have several Richard Scarry books, so he is used to the chaotic array of images, and this is the book that he goes to several times a day...asking for the plane book.
He picks out new things every time and I often find him sitting on the floor with this book open all on his own. He has started talking about "plane to gramma's" pointing at the same plane every time. He then walks over and points to a picture of his gramma. If nothing else, it was a great way to help him make logical sense of the fact that his grandparents are far away. When he wants to think about them, all he has to do is pull out this book to remember the plane ride to their house.
Cute book, and great teaching value for the bargain price.
More than a story by .. MomOfOne (Southern NH, USA) My dd and I had fun looking at the great typical Ricahrd Scarry pictures, and then also enjoyed following along in the pictures to see where one man's hat has ended up after it blew away @ the airport. We have read it many times and she still likes the "searching".
Son who loves aircraft can't get enough by .. Pilates mom of 2 (NC) My son loves any aircraft since his father is a pilot so this book is great. It takes some kids on a tour through an airport and all of it's parts (mind you they do it in an airplane themselves)teaching a lot about the ahppenings. Scarry always entertains.
The book was alright by .. Adeline Jean-louis () I thought the book was alright, it was too busy for me. I wish it had more than one story like the other Richard Scarry's books.

But with Smokey and the other brave firefighters rushing in and out to rescue people, there are quite a few wet paint mishaps! Filled with information about firefighters and Scarry’s sense of fun, this book is sure to delight young readers everywhere. Customer reviews If you're a Scarry fan you'll like it by .. Lotsa Books (Texas) I think this is a Richard Scarry Jr book rather than the dad, but it's still classic Scarry, charming and enjoyable. It's no Cars and Trucks or Busy Busy World, nor is it designed to educate your child about firefighters or fire stations, but it's a quick, cute and enjoyable read.
Great book by .. K. Reams () This is a great little busy book for kids. So many things to look at on all the pages, it will keep their imagination going. I have always liked Richard Scarry books and this is another great one of his.

Action packed pictures and story! by .. J. Arena (Williamsburg, VA) Do you think it might be a good idea to hire painters named Drippy and Sticky?
Well, In Richard Scarry's fun-filled book A Day at the Fire Station, that's just what happened and much more! Toddlers and young readers will love this story about mishaps galore.
This classic children's book is chock full of laughs and action, with illustrations that offer lots for the imagination.

Lots to look for, lots of fun. by .. M. Eberle (Corvallis, OR) My son (2 years old) loves this book. It's great for teaching new words and getting him to search the drawings for new things. The pages are chaotic, but that's part of the fun. It's a very silly story, and it makes for wonderful reading time. We look forward to adding more books like this to our collection.
It is a paperback, so you might want to check how gently your kid might or might not treat the book.

Customer reviews Bed Time Stories with the Aminals by .. Jackie S. Wolf (Texas) Mr Scarry was my children's favorite author. Again, as I read Richard Scarry's books to my grandchildren they loved every character. There was a clear cut character trait and lesson on life to be learned. I bought this book expecting to find my friend Richard Scarry but, this did not even sound like his other books. I was very disappointed. Will I buy another Richard Scarry book. Probably not.

Bedtime stories? Some, not all. by .. Lough (Portland, OR USA) As usual Richard Scarry's illustrations are wonderful. However, the first story in this book is about pirates and a "ferocious monster". Not sure why you would include a story like this before bedtime?? The other stories are fine, but if your child gets scared easily maybe the other stories would be better.

I love Richard Scarry books! by .. Cynthia A. Walker (Charlotte, NC) I love these books by Richard Scarry. I bought them when my children were small, and I bought this one for my 5 month old grandson. Even though he doesn't understand the words and pictures, he loves the colors, and there is so much to look at that they really entertain him. The other day he was kind of cranky so I sat in the rocker with him and read two of the books. He was asleep before I finished the second book, but I kept reading because I wanted to see what happened. You can't go wrong with these books for children of all ages!
Great book if you don't mind having to read it all the time! by .. Byron (Atlanta, Georgia) My 17month daughter loves this book! I was into Richard Scarry books growing up and really wanted my baby to like it. Initially I was afraid the illustrations would be too busy for her, but that is clearly not the case. This book is one of three books (the others are big book of animals and book of words) she brings to me just about every thirty minutes, which is driving me a little crazy but I'll just have to deal with it. She really gets into the scenes especially scenes of the circus, zoo, farm, grocery, home, beach, ships, trains, etc. and has built up quite the vocabulary. She's saying the names of the animals and their sounds, bodyparts, the landscape such as tree, sun, moon, cloud, flower and can point to most anything in the pages. The scenes of the airport, trucks and "when you grow up" aren't engaging her yet but I'm sure later when she gets it more.
Richard Scarry books are a beloved classic, they are and will be on the bookshelf in our home (until the grandkids). ;)
It really IS the BEST word book ever! by .. CrazyForBooks (woburn, ma) I LOVE this book! I had it when I was a child. My favorite word in it is on the kitchen page "Batter Spoon"!!!
Best Kids Books by .. jrtsjukejoint () I can't forget this book, because of it had several great factors. It covered almost every place a kid may see, with it's name to know what the object is. Each page shows kids different work spaces, lands, city life, even inside a home, room by room.
This would be an excellent book for preschoolers, and even younger as well. Children and their parents may create their own stories with the detailed scenes.

Product Description Illustrated in full color. This car-and- truck-filled alphabet extravaganza that starts with an ambulance and ends with a zippercar, is shaped like Lowly Worm's applemobile. Customer reviews Cute and simple by .. lainibug (Nashville, TN) I bought this for my baby nephew, thinking it might be the Lowly Worm story I had memorized when I was teeny. It's not, but was still a good purchase. It's even smaller than a regular board book (check the measurements) and is a word book rather than a story. So it will probably be a good take-along more than for story time.
The pictures are classic Richard Scarry, and include some fun imaginary ones (Egg Car) along with fire truck, etc. It gets 4 stars from me because I don't consider it a must-have, but it's a great intro to Scarry, especially for a child who loves vehicles. At the low price, if you know what you're getting, you won't be disappointed.
H and I are missing by .. some_woman (Here & There) The size is not a problem from me. This book is meant to be held by small hands. My daughter has other books this size that she walks around with pretty much all day.
What bothers me is that two letters are missing. I thought I got a defective copy but I read another reviewer count 24 letters represented in this book. There are 26 letters in the English alphabet. H and I are missing in this book. No room for a Hippo car & Igloo car? No Humvee & Ice Truck?
Because of this egregious (and shameful!) mistake, I'm tempted to give it an even lower rating. But the fact is, my daughter likes it and responds to it. (She yells out "Meow!Gaaar!" when the cat is driving one of the vehicles) So, yeah, she'll get the silliness of animals driving silly vehicles, but she won't be learning the alphabet from this book, that's for sure.
Small but Cute by .. C. Grano (Las Vegas, NV USA) This book is very small. That makes it nice to carry around, but hard to see the little drawings on the pages. Our 15 month old daughter doesn't understand all the crazy cars (pickle car, toothpaste car, etc.), we have a good time reading it occasionally. If you're interested in a Richard Scary book, I would recommend a larger book with more going on on each page. My nephew has a huge one that he loves to stare at.
My son loves this book... by .. Melanie C. Hurt (Idaho) I bought this book as filler, to receive free shipping. It's a small, inexpensive book. The illustrations are very cute and the format is nice. It has the letter of the alphabet and then vehicles that start with that letter. It's been great alphabet and two-word phrase practice for my 22-month old. He enjoys reading this book with me and he now says "garbage truck" and "big truck." I'm very happy I decided on this book. It is surprisingly small, about four-inches square, but cute, nontheless.
Great book for the car! by .. Aaron'smommy (Pennsylvania) After reading many reviews on here, I bought this book wondering what I'd get. It seems that most reviews here are either very strongly liking this book or very strongly not liking it (it's a kid's book for gosh sakes!)
Anyway, my son loves this book! It's the perfect size to hand him in the car or leaf through and talk about at a restaurant while waiting for food. The book is silly and fun- so please lighten up if you're not sure what a "corn car" is or whatever. Richard Scarry wasn't afraid to use his imagination, and was a lot of fun as a result.
It's an inexpensive book that takes a few minutes to flip through. Golden, in my eyes!

Product Description Meet Sam Cat and Dudley Pig, detectives: They find fingerprints and search for clues. They catch robbers. They delight young readers with their antics! Whenever the criminals strike Richard Scarry’s two endearing animal sleuths are ready to go—and in this treasury they’re out to catch some pie thieves, nab a supermarket shoplifter who finds an ingenious way to sneak out his goodies, and seize the bad guys who swiped some pearls. What kids will love most, though, are the madcap, slapstick-filled pictures; adorable animal characters; and the engaging (but sometimes clueless) heros who dress up in a hilarious series of disguises. Customer reviews Great book! Very funny to my five and seven year old kids by .. Tamara Donohue (Silver Spring, MD) This is a great book! I don't know why our library doesn't have it. The stories are great and the pictures are very funny to my five and seven year old.
Richard Scarey by .. Jesse Esslinger (Lutherville, Maryland USA) My children were introduced to the "Richard Scarry" books 40 years ago. Now, I am buying them for my grand-children. Amazon sent me an email of a "new" Scarry book, "The Great Pie Robbery", I'm not sure if it is ,indeed, a new book, or simply a new publication of an older book. Either way, it is wonderful ! Great illustrations, a story to keep the interest of 3 to 4 year olds, and a delight in every way.
Along with "Doctor Scuess", Richard Scarry books are as good as children's book can be written.
FINALLY! by .. donkee (USA) I cannot believe this book has been out of print for so long. It is THE BEST Richard Scarry EVER! It is a mystery book where Sam Cat & Dudley Pig solve crimes. If you grew up in the 70's you probably remember them. Three complete stories now in a more "horizontal" form (The Great Pie Robbery, The Supermarket Mystery, & The Great Steamboat Mystery.) I grew up with a book that contained the first two. It was titled "Great Big Mystery Book." It was my most favorite childhood book. I truly believe it fostered my love of mystery & crime solving...B.A. in Criminology :) It is a GEM of a book and I am thrilled it is now available. As my husband was looking at the third story (Steamboat), his face lit up as his memory brought him back. I cannot recommend this book enough. It is the quintessential Scarry.
