If you are acting as a contractor on your home or garage project, then this book is invaluable to make sure that the subs are building to code or making sure that you are building to code. As an retired contractor and engineer, I've come to realize over time that codes actually do have a purpose in life besides making the building process a pain. The old farm house I bought probably wasn't built to code and it shows. A lot of farmers around here have to get up on their out-building and shovel snow because every year one or two more of their buildings collapse.
The book is well organize by project phase so things are easy to find--cement pad, walls, floors, roof, etc.

contacted seller of this book several times informing him that I never received the book I purchased. Never received a reply. So I can't rate a purchase the seller for some reason I guess I will never know why I did not receive.

You really need to WANT to have the Residential Code to wade through the 'jargon' in it. The answers ARE there, but you have to look for them. The chart on window and door header requirements is nearly 3 pages long! The code must cover all possibilities, but it doesn't need to be so technical that only 'inspectors' can decipher it (if they're lucky). The 2002 National Electric Code is just as complex, but it is written to be understood by nearly anyone. I hope the editors/writers of the next version of the IRC take the hint.

I liked the fonts used quite a bit, but the story was slow at times. There was almost no charicter development and the plotlines were dated. Still, the surprise ending does what it intends.

IRC Codes are as the say "standard". It is good to have a single code book for residential building. However, the ability to go to one location, click on what I need when I need it, and have it delivered at a reasonable price where I need it...is the best.

Book was ordered due to recent inspection requirements in Texas for home building construction. The book is the reference guide against which all inspections will be conducted. In that regard, the book is invaluable to any residential building contractor.

The new International Residential Code, (IRC), promises to be an extremly user friendly building code for houses. It has all of the aspects of construction including construction, plumbing, electrical, mechanical and even energy codes combined into one easy to use format. There are sketches galore! For those used to dealing with the previous model codes, this code will exceed your expectations for its user-friendly nature. There are some changes to building code requirements to which inspectors and builders are accostomed. The separation between the house and garage is limited to a single layer of 1/2" drywall. The alternative building material such as ICF (insulated concrete form) wall systems and ISP (insulated structural panels) are now inside the conventional aspects of the code. Certain shear wall provisions have changed. Footing design can now rely on an assumed 1500 psf minimum soil bearing pressure. But there are other problems. The seismic map has been hinged to the postal zip code and consequently, several different seismic zones are within a single community. Other problems will certainly be resolved by the code body in the years to come. As ever, changes are slow, but local jurisdictions will surely allow for these changes locally This Item is available at$47 & $55 and I don't know the difference.

A well organized, user friendly code book with extensive figures and tables to help a home designer create a safe and strong home. The loose leaf version allowed me to lay it next to my work and not have to flip it open again and again. Well worth the extra cost.
