Great Patterns for Beginners to Learn and for Pros to Quickly Knit 5 by .. Kkhymn (Los Angeles, CA)
I have been working through several patterns in this book - the patterns are great for beginning knitters to start on and for the more experienced knitters to quickly finish. The patterns and photos are varied in skill and design, and the book is light enough to carry with you.

As with many pattern books, the descriptions of the stitches are ok and the illustrated drawings are not great. I suggest that any beginning knitter find videos of the stiches on You Tube and use them to help you understand the written descriptions.

Here are photos of some of my completed projects from this book:

Great Book 5 by .. ajay (Clearlake, Ca United States)
I just love this book. I have made three so far. They knit fast. I have done Blissful,Tea Time and Sunny. Some of the patterns are more complicated but it is a good time to learn new methods. I lookd for some time for afghan patterns, this book has a lot to choose from. I would recommend it highly.

A pleasant surprise... 5 by .. Kristen Staubitz (Highland, MI USA)
I ordered this book on a whim and was happy to find a few familiar patterns in it that I had in another book that was too thick to properly worth with or even copy. I recently finished an afghan using the first pattern from this book 'Tea Time'. It's a super simple pattern yet is very beautiful. As I write this review, I'm also working on another pattern from this book called 'Comfy', just like 'Tea Time' it's simple yet beautiful. I've never done a big project like an afghan before starting these patterns. I recommend this book for anyone looking to get into larger projects like afghans as it does have a good amount of simple patterns. I would say probably half the patterns would be good for someone fairly new to knitting, with the rest being more complex ones to work up to or for the more experienced knitter.

For big needle knitting 4 by .. L. Wittke (Flagstaff, AZ, United States)
All the patterns are for 2 strands of yarn at a time, using bigger needles. I am making one of these right now and its coming along fine. This is a slim book but packed with a lot of patterns - some quite unusual.

Product Description

This clear and concise introduction to the Python language is aimed at readers who are already familiar with programming in at least one other language. The core features of Python are explained first and the features that Python shares with other languages are covered quickly -- while specific Python features are explained in more detail. With large application features that are uncommon in other languages, Python can greatly enhance the programming process. Also the python language's ability to be compiled into Java bytecode and to be extended with C or C++ makes it well suited for Web site construction and Internet related applications. The material on these processes has been contributed by professionals who make their living using Python in this way. The Python core language reference that concludes the book has been designed to get new Python users to an advanced level of programming. On-line author support available to book purchasers.

Excellent Tutorial for the Python Language 5 by .. Wayne Cannon (Healdsburg, CA USA)
I have found this to be the best tutorial for the Python language of ten highly-rated books on Python that I've read. It is well-organized and presented in an interesting and very readable fashion.

Excellent intro, AND a good read 5 by .. Stephen Ferg (Arlington, VA United States)
This is, I think, the best quick introduction to Python that you can get. I have nothing to add to the other reviews, except to emphasize that it is very readable. Many introductory books are hard to get through, simply because they are so dry and boring. This book, on the other hand, is very readable, and actually makes the process of reading about the language enjoyable.

If you are getting started with Python, I recommend this book, and also O'Reilly's "Python in a Nutshell". With those two books, you should have everything you need to get started.

Excelent introductory book 5 by .. J. Bares Dominguez (United Kingdom)
A book to get you up to speed in programming Python, plenty of examples and beautifully done, well crafted, easy to read, fast to get the information without many rereadings, great design and the most important, it does a superb job.

Probably the best introductory book to a subject i have.

Best Language Book Since Kernighan & Ritchie! 5 by .. Jack Trainor (San Francisco, CA United States)
Excuse my enthusiasm, but this is one of the best software books I've ever read and I've been programming professionally for 16 years. I wanted to learn Python as a replacement for Perl so I bought all the O'Reilly books, which were OK but too chatty and disorganized for my taste. I picked up Quick Python and found myself reading it like a bestseller and I still reread it. I was amazed at its consistent clarity, depth and friendliness with lots of tight examples in a visually pleasing format. The authors don't just cover the material, they also let you in on the subtleties and gotchas that go unmentioned in a reference like Beazley's Python Essential Reference (which I also own but for me Quick Python works better most of the time).

Furthermore in order to explain Python well, the authors provide astute explanations of general programming topics such as exception handling, regular expressions, and the pros and cons of the current crop of popular programming languages. They also bring in experts, even Guido Van Rossum (the creator of Python), to write chapters on more advanced topics like JPython and Zope.

My only caveat is that this is not the best place for beginners to start--Lutz & Ascher's Learning Python would be better--but it is a good book for beginners to own and dip into as they develop.

Other reviewers have mentioned that Quick Python's coverage of Tkinter (the main Python GUI package) is thin and that's true, though somewhat understandable since Tkinter is quite a beast and whole books have been written that don't cover Tkinter or Tk all that well. I would dearly love to see Harms & McDonald bring their accessible, thorough-going approach to Tkinter and its extension, Python Megawidgets.

Great book for learning Python 5 by .. Matt ()
This book is great for learning Python! Lots of concise information, clear definitions and step by step code examples...Highly Recommended.

Neat book 5 by .. Joseph Baxter ()
This is the most thought-provoking book I've read in a long time. Without being simplistic, it introduced me to so many interesting things I could use to my benefit. Being intellectually smart is surely a strong advantage in our society, but it doesn't say nearly as much as your control and awareness over your own emotions. Have you ever wondered why you have emotions, how your brain works to process them, and how you can use them to your own advantage? I've never read a book that so clearly explains how it all works and what to do with it.

Just what you need... 5 by .. Victoria Bean ()
...and no fluff. I bought this book because it was recommended to me and I was curious about the topic of emotional intelligence. It has great stories that bring emotional intelligence to life, and the authors show you just how important emotional intelligence is and what you can do to increase your EQ. The companion online test is also fantastic. The book was nice and short, but I didn't feel like it left anything out. It just told me what I need to know so that I can use emotional intelligence to improve my life. I didn't have to sift through a bunch of junk to get to the good stuff and I like that!

"Quick" is right 3 by .. Paul Beusterien (Alameda, CA USA)
This is a fast, perhaps superficial, introduction to Emotional Intelligence. If you really want to understand EI, I'd recommend taking the time to read Daniel Goleman's EI book.

As I was working through the companion online EI self-assessment, I felt that I was really evaluating my EI self-awareness versus EI itself. The book itself gives examples of low EI people who would test well, like the boss who erroneously believes that he is a great communicator.

Nonetheless, if you know little about EI, and want to get a fast overview, this could be the book for you.

Helps you improve in the most important skills 5 by .. Ethan Samuels (New York, NY)
This book is a breezy read that has some great anecdotes to illustrate what emotional intelligence looks like, why it's important, and what you can do to improve. The authors have tested and studied more than 500,000 people to determine the role emotional intelligence plays in life and what people need to do to improve their ability in this critical skill.

The book begins with a riveting story of Phineas Gage, a man who survived a horrific brain injury seemingly unscathed, until (as you'll discover in the book) people noticed some unusual changes in his behavior. The authors' presentation of the four emotional intelligence skills is intuitive and easy to follow, and the last half of the book shows you how to improve your EQ both at work and at home.

The test that comes with the book is taken online (via a passcode provided with the book). Many of the best strategies for improving your EQ are online in your test results (customized to your score profile). I think the couple of people here who complained about the book needing more strategies must've missed this online component.

Very Disappointing 1 by .. J. Keil (Phoenix, Arizona)
A recommended read, but I can't figure out why.
The authors spout the necessity and importance of emotional intelligence with anecdotal stories and descriptions but don't do much of anything to actually train the reader. Do not bother borrowing the book from your local library. The code needed to take their "Emotional Intelligence Appraisal" is a one-time option. To try to take the test again, after the first reader, you would need to pay to do so. This is a problem even if you purchase the book. The authors appear to be more concerned with making a buck off their website than teaching the concept in their book. My recommendation: Do not bother; the book is merely an advertisement for their on-line products and seminars.

Great Book, Awsome Patterns 5 by .. Toniette R. Heidorn (Seoul, South Korea)
Great Book, Love the patterns in the book. Book was neat and in good shape. Very fast delivery.

Fabulous Book 5 by .. Stephanie (Connecticut)
This is a great book. Instructions are easy to follow and the quilts are just beautiful. I made the bunny rabbit quilt for a baby shower and the woman wouldn't let her baby use it for the first 6 months. She said she didn't want to ruin it. Just a great selection of patterns.

Quilting Book 5 by .. Shirley W. Mcmillen ()
I am very pleased with both the book and the timely delivery. I had looked for this book in quilting stores for some time and am pleased to have found it at Amazon.

Rotary Cutter Quilts 5 by .. Judith Graham (Petrolia, PA United States)
This book is well illustrated with great projects. Any quilter would love this book.

Disappointed 1 by .. balletmom (Wisconsin)
I've been quilting for a number of years and bought this book because I thought the patterns looked cute. I'm currently working on my first project from this book, the Santa Claus Tree Skirt. I have found the directions to be difficult, and a large amount of fabric is wasted because of the way you are instructed to make your blocks. I would much rather have been given actual dimensions and then just cut from there instead of making larger blocks, sewing them together, and then cutting half of them off and tossing the fabric. Fabric isn't cheap, and a good portion of it is going in the garbage with this project. I don't plan on making another project from this book.

Tedious for those who need a fast, efficient reference book. 2 by .. Michelle L. Gilbert (Cleveland Heights, OH)
Warning: Strong opinions follow!

I hate this book. Sorry, Mr. Lance, but I really do.

I'm a medical transcriptionist of 12 years. I've tried this book OVER and OVER and OVER again through the years at the urgings of other MTs. I just can't stand it. I really have tried to make friends with it.

Perhaps it's better for other professions, but for a transcriptionist, it's cumbersome at best. Don't bother looking up a brand name drug; it takes a cross reference and fumbling through flimsy, thin pages to get you to the proper generic name. (unless, of course, my education and decade of experience is so lacking and I'm actually expected to have the knowledge of a pharmacy tech so I can use my reference book!) Then you have to weed through paragraphs, or sometimes a page, of information to get to what an MT needs: (1) Confirm this drug that you barely understood a sloppy doctor dictate actually IS for the condition he's talking about. (2) Confirm the dosage you just heard mumbled by said mushmouth. (3) Confirm any funky capitalization that big pharm has decided they need to use to pep up the name of the newest pill on the market.

And, frankly, I worry about an MT who has to rely on a book like this. You should know the common meds and their common dosages already. Yes, even a newbie. That's what training is for. When I started doing MT, I had a fabu reference library. I honestly thought I'd need to know everything about every pathology. I've gotten rid of two-thirds of my collection. It's about staying up to date and staying efficient, not about being a reference librarian. And this tome falls into the latter category.

The only reason I even gave this two stars is for snazzy appendices, including a Therapeutic Category Index, which is lacking in the book I prefer (see below).

Sorry, but I'm quite busy enough with transcribing; I don't need to slow myself down any further by wading through a book which is as inefficient as the Yellow Pages.

I tried AGAIN (!) with the 2007 copy. Forget it. I'd send it back if I hadn't spilled something on it. If you are an MT and you think this will speed up your day, do yourself a favor and order it on trial from the manufacturer; you can send it back that way after 30 days. (sorry Amazon!)

Or... do what I'm about to do right now. Buy the Saunders Pharmaceutical Word Book. But, you say, it's missing a drug already for 2007? Google it and write it in the margins. You're STILL saving yourself time.

Makes Healthy Eating Easy 5 by .. jersey girl (New Jersey, USA)
Owned this cookbook since 1993 and since shared it as a gift to many. This book and it's sequel (Volume II) make healthy eating easy for beginners and also for busy people.

Many recipes in this book are still staples in my cooking routine. I always have the ground turkey version of the ''Baked Meatballs'' in my freezer. I've shared the ''Cream Cheese Topping'' recipe with everyone I know. Except that I only use 1 Cup of skim milk instead of 2. It makes a quick, easy Frosting for any cake that no one would guess is totally fat and sugar free. ''Salmon Cakes'' are always an easy dinner. And the Focaccia Pizza tastes better than takeout with a lot less fat content.

I've since added Evelyn Tribole's ''Healthy Homestyle'' Cookbooks, along with these, to my list of all time favorites. They are all very dogeared. They also make great gifts for family and friends who are into healthy foods that really taste terrific.

Easy and Good 5 by .. Julia ()
My kids are nagging me to cook healthy and this book satisfies all of us. The recipes are easy and taste great! My favorite - Beef or Pork Stir Fry.

Great resource for the busy person who wants to eat healthy. 5 by .. Krista Kiger (Lewisville, NC)
Quick tips and easy to find ingredients; also healthy in all categories of concern. I love all of this author's books and have purchased them for my employee wellness program at work. Employees had loved them too!

This is an EXCEPTIONAL cookbook! 5 by .. Bella L (Portland, OR USA)
This book is so well organized; it makes meal planning a breeze...from grocery lists to nutrient analysis and straight on to easy, delicious meals!
It's a must in any kitchen.

Healthy and quicl 5 by .. Colleen A. Bushmaker (Coos Bay, OR)
Have tried only one chicken recipe (marindate) and it was delicious. I highly recommend this book. The pictures are excellent.

My teacher recommended this to me for medical transcription. 5 by .. A. Marshall ()
My teacher is a medical transcriptionist, and this is the book she recommended. I looked at half a dozen other books (all of which cost more than this one, I believe), and Quick Look really is the best for a medical transcriptionist, in my opinion. It was the only one I could find that listed medications by condition in a well-organized format. It also has some good information in the appendices. I highly recommend this book for medical transcription.

Clever idea, but might be hard to make your own 4 by .. Jadecat (Lake Orion, MI United States)
My kids have dabbled in making simple flip books before, so when I saw this, I thought it might spark more creativity. Basically the book has 8 flip books that they have started for you (about 2 x 6 inches each), and you finish it up with your own sketches. Their flip books have nice backgrounds already printed on them, like a frog on a rock, and they give you instructions on where to draw the fly and the frogs tongue. Each book has about 35 pages and it is pretty cool when they get one done. Included are the clips to hold the flip book together and a few little markers to use for coloring. It does not include any blank pages to make your own flip books from scratch, and the paper they use is thicker than regular printing paper. 3x5 card would probably work well.
Still, it is pretty fun, although once you rip out all the flip books, you will have a shell of a book that has a little bit of info in it, but won't be something you want to store.

An addicting product 5 by .. belacane (Sammamish, WA USA)
My son is 8. He's addicted to video games. But when he's grounded, he's not allowed to use them. I have despaired of finding any activity that interests him as much as Mario games on the Wii...until his 8th birthday party, when a friend gave him this Quick Flip Books project as a gift. He has spent the last three days working on this, with only brief interludes to go play outside or whatever. Video games have not been touched! He's obsessed with the flip books and I only wish there were more (different) flip book project kits like this one. It's a real winner.

We recently ordered 5 copies of Quick as a Cricket for our grandson and as gifts for other children. Our kids grew up with this book and it is timeless. All the copies we ordered were paperback but one arrived supersized. The pages are 15 x17 which is wonderful. The pages of the smaller books are 6x6. Both sizes have their uses but we really enjoy the wonderful illustrations in the larger format.
