Oddly Addicting 5 by .. Denali (Binghamton, NY United States)
I cannot say enough good things about this book! The size was intimidating at first, but don't be afraid! This book loves you and wants to help you. For me, there is no better way to learn physics than by going over problem after problem.

This book helps in a way a textbook only touches on: by showing you HOW to solve the problems. The questions at the end of the textbook chapter don't do that. And they also work a bit like a textbook in that some of the problems teach you key facts about a subject. This is great because rather than telling you these facts, like in a textbook, they show you.

The problems really become addicting. They make you feel so empowered and you really can tell you are learning. It actually makes you say, "oh, I'll do just one more!"

And I don't even really like physics.

Not one of the better REA books 2 by .. John Marrow ()
I was so excited when I got this book. It's not easy to find physics help books that cover calculus based problems. Most physics books seem to be focused on algebra/trig based physics. That's obviously because people who know calculus know everything and don't need any help in anything... yeah, right! Luckily Rea and a few (and I mean a FEW) others still have common sense and realized that calculus based physics students need help too. Unfortunately I cannot recommend this physics book. It sucks that I can't since there aren't that many calculus based physics books.

This book just has some major flaws (at least they're major flaws in my opinion). Just to get it out of my system, I must say that the type-set that Rea uses sucks. I know every Rea book uses the same type of typewriter font and all of their "Problem Solver" books look bland, but I don't know why this has to be. In fact, there's no good reason they can't make their books a little more aesthetically pleasing.

Anyway, the most annoying feature I have found about this book is that a good chunk of the problems don't use the SI system of units, which is the standard system for science courses (for those who don't know, the SI system of units is basically a modified metric system).

Often when I work problems, I have to do extra work simply converting the given information into the SI unit. And once I come to an answer, I can't just compare my answer to the one in the book. Instead, I have to convert my answer back into the English system which is a hassle. I just simply don't understand why a science text wouldn't use the SI system. I have never seen a physics book (or any science book for that matter) not use the SI system. And if it weren't bad enough that this book very often does not use the SI system, it actually uses a lot of units that aren't very commonly used.

A lot of the problems use "slugs" as a unit. Perhaps advanced physics students know off hand what a slug is, but me, I had to look it up online just to do an otherwise easy problem. It turned out that a slug was around 14.6 kg. Now how many people actually knew that?

Amazing! 5 by .. Maximilius (USA)
I'm very impressed; this book has loads of problems with which I can practise. It's simply the best physics problem book ever published!

Completely Useless 1 by .. ()
I have attempted numerous times to use examples from this book as guidance when stuck on homework problems assigned in my engineering physics course and have found that the book offers nothing but further frustration. It's unorganized, the typeset is monotonous and appears as if someone typed the book on a typewriter making it difficult to focus and follow the text, and I have yet to find a worked example that has been of any use whatsoever in completing even one of my homework problems.
The book does offer a lengthy chart of conversion factors.

Good Supplementary Practice, but that is it. 3 by .. (Singapore)
I am currently an engineering student, but I bought this book back in my highschool days for an AP Physics C class. I'd like to say that this book covers about every topic you can possibly imagine in physics at the introductory level. But even so, I'd rate it as just average. It may have some good interesting problems, but not many will find it worth the money. You may not even use more than a tenth of the book.

First of all, I dislike the layout of the book. The text is some courier font which makes it very difficult to read and thus difficult looking. The book is divided into chapters based on topic. The topics are pretty specific: Kinematics, Dynamics, Statics, etc. It starts out the chapter by 'trying' to teach you about that subject, but it fails entirely. The problems start out as easy as F = ma, but then suddenly jumps to extreme difficulty. I topped physics back in highschool and aced the APs, but I still found many of the problems extremely challenging. Just be warned that you had better be good in physics and also guessing as the solutions are also often anything but clear. It jumps around assuming you know whatever they are doing. Most of my friends who have borrowed the book have been unable to utilize it at all due to its difficulty.

In conclusion, if you are above average to excellent in physics, have nothing better to do, then you may want to just pick up this book as an extra supplement to challenge yourself or learn new methods in doing things. It maybe more useful in college where they split physics into more specific courses like dynamics, statics, electric circuits, etc. But by that time this book would be insufficient anyways. I just don't know what market the publishers were publishing for, as it is generally AP irrelevant, GCE irrelevant, and either too easy or too hard.

All writing is rewriting. But what do you change, and how do you change it? All screenplays have problems. They happened to Die Hard: With a Vengeance and Broken Arrow-and didn't get fixed, leaving the films flawed. They nearly shelved Platoon-until Oliver Stone rewrote the first ten pages and created a classic. They happen to every screenwriter. But good writers see their problems as a springboard to creativity. Now bestselling author Syd Field, who works on over 1,000 screenplays a year, tells you step-by-step how to identify and fix common screenwriting problems, providing the professional secrets that make movies brilliant-secrets that can make your screenplay one headed for success...or even Cannes. Learn how to:

  • Understand what makes great stories work
  • Make your screenplay work in the first ten pages, using Thelma & Louise and Dances With Wolves as models
  • Use a "dream assignment" to let your creative self break free overnight
  • Make action build character, the way Quentin Tarantino does
  • Recover when you hit the "wall"-and overcome writer's block forever

Cookie Cutter Movie Scripts 1 by .. Mister Freeze (Madison, WI USA)
Ever wonder why so many movies are exactly the same. Blame this guy, he has his formula and every script needs to follow it or it is no good. I don't think so. The irony of this book is that the films he admires the most are the ones that don't follow his writing formula. The other thing that bothers me, is the book is all about drama's. There is little or nothing on action, sci-fi, comedy, westerns, animation. There are so few insights that I really felt this book was really more about the writers ego and the 'look how great I am' attitude than providing the real nuts and bolts that an aspiring film writer needs to know. I threw away his formula and guess what? See you at the movies!

A reasonable approach to story bandaiding 3 by .. Craig Nybo (Salt Lake City, UT USA)
Syd Field is, of course, the master teacher when it comes to screenplay writing instruction and story theory. He has written many books about how to develop great characters and put them into an engaging story.

His book, The Screenwriter's Problem Solver, is an attempt to help writers work through story glitches by setting up common story problem scenarios and explaining how to iron them out. Though this book is good in principle, I didn't feel it helped me tremendously.

I have written many screenplays. I also watch and analyze many movies and stories. I think most of what this book teaches is pretty much known to the experienced screenwriter. Though, for a newbie to the craft, it might be a good read. I would recommend some of Field's other books, like Screenplay or The Screenwriter's Workbook.

    Hope this helps.

Very Helpful Guide for Screenplay Writers 5 by .. Melinda L. Honkomp ()
My son references this book often when he has writer's block, is uncertain of film techniques & rules of practice, and when he needs a little creative inspiration. Extremely helpful, and easy to read for first-time writers!

FOR ANY STORYTELLER 5 by .. Chris Well (Nashville, TN)
Although written for screenwriters, Syd Field's The Screenwriter's Problem Solver is full of useful advice for any kind of storyteller; as a novelist in the middle of writing my next novel, I found Problem Solver very helpful. Unlike most screenwriting books, which are about building your story from the ground up, The Screenwriter's Problem Solver is for the writer with a story-in-progress, exploring the relationship among character, plot and structure, and how each fit into the whole story -- and ways to troubleshoot if one or more of these elements needs to be strengthened. Field draws examples from screenplays that worked (and those that didn't), with liberal examples from a variety of popular films, including The Shawshank Redemption, Thelma & Louise, Crimson Tide, How to Make an American Quilt and Terminator 2: Judgment Day. The end result is a useful text for any storyteller wanting to build a better story.

...in engineering electromagnetics. I bought this just before the final, realizing that I was in big trouble and needed to study like crazy to do well in the course. I laid down forty bucks for it, hoping it would save me the $500 that it would cost to retake the course. And boy did it ever! I studied my brains out with this book. The book claims that it has all the questions that they can ask you on homework or exams. Well, on the final, there were six questions, and two of them were ones I had practiced in this book! I guess they weren't kidding...

This book looks like it is very comprehensive on the subject of electromagnetics and offers easy to follow solutions.

    Good problem solver 4 by .. ()
The text was sufficient to help on a fair amount of problems, I feel i got my money's worth by purchasing it. The varbiales are a bit archaic, if you are using Griffiths' Text for your class, but never the less this book covers about 50% of the problems in Griffiths, their method of pedagogy is at times slightly muddled, but you can track through it if you have some idea on what you are doing. Don't think of this book as your savior though, if you aren't doing well this won't push you over the edge.

very useful for reference and problem solving technique. 5 by .. C. Jones ()
I really like this book. It shows you how to "think" as you are doing the problem and the methodology used to arrive at the problem. I often get textbooks and see the example and it works fine and I can do a problem if its JUST LIKE THAT but then the author gets cute and changes everything about the problem so that it is unrecognizable as the problem you just learned how to solve and then you are stuck again. This problem helps me with stuff like that.

Great, but not complete 4 by .. ()
This book is great if you want to brush up on algebraic skills and it involves a step by step process for each solution. It is a great solution guide except for one little flaw: it does not contain much graphing. As I am myself in an algebra class, I know that you must be able to graph many different types of equations, and this book doesn't cover graphing thoroughly. Otherwise, it is a great book and i recommend it for anyone who really needs help in algebra.

Companion to the educated and teachers 4 by .. bergvall jonas (Sweden)
In order to learn your subject more effectively there are a number of ways to go by products: Buy a software tool with questions, answers and a mathematical engine to calculate interactively for you, step by step with additional graphical representation or run a software tool as Maple 6 or Maple 7 ( a CAS ( Computer Algebra System ) ) or buy a problem solver book in addition to your textbook.

Although Maple is an advanced tool that covers almost all you ever need in education its evaluation techniques differs on major points completely from the way you would do (evaluate for educational purposes) mathematics on paper introducing also a number of programmatic structures which is highly complex because of how Maple evaluates. For instance a function specification in Maple is not a function altogether:what you've learn or have learned in school.

Maple is therefore more or less excluded from eduction in college level mathematics and I would say also in higher eduction since it impose to much time to learn properly and is to error prone to use even after extensive reading of the supplied tutorial at the products website.

Therefore a choice between a learning tool or additional book is to prefer.

The problem solver is a powerful tool for learning since it stresses on focusing from several points of views regarding type problems. It also facilitates a repetitive learning experience.

Each chapter is dedicated to a certain subject area. Back in the index is a complete list of keywords with referenced problem numbers after them.

The Question is immidietly followed by an explanatory answer which solves the problem, sometimes in several different ways.

Read the textbook first then do the stuff in the problem solver.

Great for the self-learner and practice sessions... 4 by .. Kersi Von Zerububbel (San Diego, CA USA)
This book is very good for getting up to speed in algebra. If you have not taken algebra in a while, this book will help you in evaluating your progress. An important feature is that sample solutions are explained in incremental steps. The explanations pertain more to technique than to the theory behind the problems. I first brush up on a topic in a general algebra text and then use this book to reinforce the concepts. Another benefit of this book is that solving problem after problem gives one a sense of accomplishment that may get side-tracked in other textbooks.

A bit dry, but useful information found here 4 by .. Mrs. H (burbs of Atlanta, GA)
I read this book as a parent to a recently diagnosed child with ADHD, inattentive type -- and to someone who homeschooled my child last year (she's in traditional school now).

The book does exactly what the cover says it will. Inside you'll find facts on:
    -- classroom accommodations
-- how to set up a behavior plan (for teachers)
    -- newest meds for ADHD
-- steps to improve attention in school
-- helping your child with homework

I'll review the book in terms of pros and cons. First the Pros:
-- The book is well organized. The sections are succint and easy to read. The book does a fine job of delineating between "parent" sections and "teacher" sections. So, it is easy to find the sections that apply to each reader.

-- As a parent, I found the homework help section refreshing and valuable. I have not found this information in other publications. Applied at home, the homework techniques are already making a positive impact at our house.

-- Chapter 4 on inattentive type is a treasure, as that is the type my daughter has. Most ADHD books focus on hyperactivity or the "combined type" of ADHD. It was great to have a whole chapter on just inattentive type.

-- Chapter 6 is all about comorbid disorders. You'll find this information in many other books; but not to the level of detail as is presented here. Dr. Parker gives us much more info on OCD, CD, anxiety, etc., than is typically offered. I will go back to this chapter again and again for reference material. It's really worth the read.

    Cons:
-- The book's narrative is as dry as dirt. :) The information presented is correct and important, but reading the book is about as exciting as reading a cell phone owner's manual. Do not expect a riveting story. This is a guide and that's it.

-- The information "for teachers" on ADHD, in terms of what ADHD is and how it works/doesn't work, seemed very basic. Nothing that isn't presented in many other books. I've read just a few books on ADHD and found all the info in other publications. The info on how to create behavior plans seemed pretty good, but again, nothing that opens new doors. I would hope any teacher trained in dealing with ADHD already knows this stuff.

Overall I give this book 4 stars because it does exactly what it says it does. The bullets I listed in the Pros section make the book well worth the price and time spent reading it. I recommend this book for those sections, especially. Problem Solver Guide for Students with ADHD is a fine addition to one's ADHD library, but shouldn't be the only book in the library.

If you have a child just recently diagnosed with ADHD, I whole heartedly recommend "ADHD -- Living Without Brakes" by Martin L. Kutscher as the place to begin learning about this condition. From that point, books like Problem Solver Guide for Students with ADHD will be more of a help, in my opinion.

In this 375 page book he addresses 2168 subjects on just about every problem you could ever expect to encounter. And why not? He's been at it over 40 years and has probably talked to hundreds of thousands of garderners and heard about every problen, and yes, soltion that has been tried.
\ The book is presented in an excellent manner, profusely illustrated, very well organized ,and with a very helpful Index.
If there is anything that stands out immediately when you look at this book ;it is that it is filled with recipes, mixes, tonics,or as I'd like to call them "concoctions" to help your plants, deal with pests or anything where people usually head to the local garden center ,to buy another "miracle product",that gets added to that endless pile, you have already collected.
And how does he do it.? He simply uses products that are already around every house,as well as many that get thrown in the garbage.
I was tempted to make a list of all the things he uses ,it must be over a hundred, but I'll leave that for someone else.
Just imagine ,the next time you encounter a problem in your garden, and find you can solve it by mixing up a solution of:

    garlic-and-lemon-juice
    skim milk
    baby shampoo
    hot sauce
    and a gallon of water
And save a trip and the cost of heading for the garden center.

    Or how about this ;

    FLOWER POWER TONIC
    1 cup of beer
    2 tbsp. of fish fertilizer
    2 tbsp.of liquid dish soap
    2 tbsp.of ammonia
    2 tbsp.of whiskey
    1 tbsp.of corn syrup
    1 tpsp.of instant tea granules
    2 gallons of warm water.
There is only one thing I question about this author and his book ,and that ,is how much beer he uses in these recipes. I would not doubt it if his wife keeps asking "What are you doing with all that beer you've been buying?" "Oh,honey,I'm putting it on the plants, that's why I am getting such super results;everyone has a secret." Don't be surprised if you drop by to visit Jerry, and you see a beautiful bouquet on the table, and Jerry enjoying "a cool one" behind his tool shed!!!

Dynamite solutions to backyard problems 5 by .. M. Luke (Summerville,SC)
I saw the author on a PTV show and decided I had to have one of his books. The hard part was deciding on which one; he has so many. I love all the homemade solutions (liquid preparations) you can make to help with your yard and plants. This book cover a variety of topic for the yard from grass and shrubs, to flowers to trees. Every home should have a Jerry Baker book!!!

Neat Source to have... 5 by .. J. Sardelich (TX - USA)
I really like the 'down-to-earth' suggestions/comments. Enjoyable reading even quite humorous!

Lots of Recipes/Remedies using fairly common household items which are easily accesible & inexpensive. Instead of reading several products in the aisles, make your own right at home!! Things you use regularly may benefit your plants (EX: fling that banana peel in your rose bed - they'll thrive!)

Discusses many things from growing/caring for/etc Trees/Shrubs/Flowers to warding off unwanted 'pests' etc.

Good book to have. I'll be pulling it off the shelf often!

Don't pass this book by! 5 by .. carolyn (Canal Winchester, OH)
Boy, do I LOVE this book! I'm just a casual gardener, but boy, if you have nasty soil, need help getting your lawn started, garden started, problem with trees and plants, grab this book. I can tell you for a fact that that tonic Jerry has in this book for trees is just tremendous! Who would think that putting whiskey, beer, peroxide and jello on your trees would just make them grow huge in no time at all. My trees just love this stuff and I'm just thrilled with the results of all the recipes I've tried in this book. Plus, if you have problems with any plants you currently have, it's probably addressed in this book. Baker is the country's #1 gardener and this book shows why. I'm very thankful that I purchased it and got it for a great price on amazon.com. If you have roses and have trouble, this book is for you. He even tells you how to get rid of every bug imaginable. Also, if you're having trouble with your lawn, the remedy is in this book. Plus, Baker tells you how to select the proper plants for your area, and even outlines designs for you to have a nicely planted yard. He recommends what trees to plant as well and how they should be planted to take root quickly. He gives recipes for many tonics to get them off to a great start. Again, I can't emphasize how much this book has done for my garden. Now I'm attacking my clay soil and following Baker's advice. My yard is the best in the neighborhood!
