Product Description 6 working actors describe their methods and philosophies of the theater. All have worked with playwright David Mamet at the Goodman Theater in Chicago. Customer reviews I had my doubts about the study of acting... by .. Erik Hallberg (Chicago, IL) ...until a grad-student friend of mine required this textbook for a class he was teaching. I later learned he was going against the grain by doing so; university education in acting frequently concentrates on the emotional state of the actor, and this book punctures that paradigm like a shiny pin. A Practical Handbook for the Actor, written by pupils of acting workshops run by David Mamet and William H. Macy, puts forth the idea that the actor's emotional state is pretty much irrelevant, if it doesn't translate into actions that communicate something to the audience.
This book utterly demystifies the process of how an actor creates a powerful performance. It answers every "yes, but how?" question actors in training -- and interested fans -- should have about how acting really works.
There's nothing pedestrian or insulting about pulling back the curtain and providing specific, detailed instruction. There's nothing limiting or proscriptive about this method -- because it gives the actor two kinds of tools. The Handbook provides a framework for delving into the intellectual side of script analysis, so that the actor can really understand what's going on, boil it down to essentials, and avoid all the traps of poorly-defined emotionalism.
From there, it is completely up to the actor to translate that understanding into specific, personally meaningful, play-able actions. Which are, after all, what a performance is made out of. It's not that imagination or emotion aren't important, it's just that they are the actor's tools just like her voice or posture, and deserve the same kind of forethought and attention.
There will therefore be as many different ways to play a scene as there are different actors. It's just that by paying attention to what's going on, both in the script and on the stage at this exact moment, the actor has a clearer and more direct way to do what they mean -- without having to go through the mental and emotional gymnastics required to try to mean what the script says they have to do. As the authors point out, a system that doesn't work when you're tired, when you have a cold, or when your mom is in the audience is a pretty lousy system. So why do we spend so much time trying to work ourselves up into a particular state?
There's a famous story about Dustin Hoffman and Sir Laurence Olivier, on the set of "Marathon Man" in the mid-1970s. It's one of those stories that isn't actually true, but is so instructive that it should be. They're about to film the scene where Hoffman's character confronts Olivier's, after an intense period of cat-and-mouse. Because his character hasn't slept all night, Hoffman stayed up all night, and jogged around the studio lot so he'd be appropriately sweaty and worn-down for the scene.
The story claims that as the director called "places," Olivier set down his newspaper, got up out of his chair, and was startled to see the dismal state of his co-star. "My dear boy," he said, shaking his head, "you really should try ACTING."
This book is very much more the kind of acting Sir Laurence was talking about, and not the kind that makes an actor exhausted and neurotic. I can't recommend it highly enough, both for those studying acting and those who are just fans of the process.
Good advice by .. Mark Pettey (Naples, FL United States) Bought this to aid in developing better performances as a magician. Lots of helpful advice in this book. Recommended.
Exciting Choices for the Actor by .. Lee Armstrong (Winterville, NC United States) I used this book to teach a beginning acting class at our community college. It is an excellent introduction to the craft. The book gives clear examples of selecting an action that create clear and exciting choices for the actor. Rather than focusing on emotional states such as "you're angry or you're happy," the text shows how to allow emotional truth to come from the moment while focusing on what the character is doing. The examples in the book are practical and relate well to the craft. I particularly appreciated that an action should have a test in the other character. So rather that an character delivering a letter with an action "to deliver" that is over without fanfare, a more exciting action would be "to please my boss so I'll get a promotion." The character still delivers a letter, but with a more dynamic action that is interesting to watch. The book is short. I covered the material in our film acting and stage acting units in about eight classes. It's short, sweet & to the point. I recommend it as a great review for experienced actors and as a wonderful introduction to beginning actors. Enjoy!
Very Useful by .. Jolie () This is a very useful guide to teaching theatre. I will be using it a lot in my classroom.
bravo! by .. Kerry O. Burns () I studied for a couple of years at the Atlantic Theatre in NYC which David Mamet and William H Macy founded...they teach exclusively the principles in this book..the title says it all.."Practical"..as far as analyzing a script, breaking it down and coming up with acting impetus this book will free you from all that crap you've been taught and give you basic, workable tools to act..especially in auditions where you might be given a script and then 5 minutes later be asked to do it..once I got a grasp of the practical techniques I found my audition success rate soar..I still incorporate these techniques in every audition...the method and all that other acting stuff you'll learn like smelling the coffe and being a leave floating off a tree, well, that's nice but an actors basic tools never change, knowing your lines and analyzing the script, knowing what's going on in the scene and what you want in the scene..this book give you the tools to do just that...highly recommended!

I loved the fact that Amazon was cheaper and faster than going with a textbook provider.
Great resource by .. Washington, DC (Washington, dc United States) I used the 1994 edition of this book in graduate school and it was an invaluable resource in subsequent research. Although the current edition is much revised, the previous edition still stands the test of time. Reasonably priced for what one receives.

Wonderful for daddy and mommie by .. Kara (Atlanta, ga) My husband found this at a used bookstore and the book is excellent. The cover makes it look like it's an old book but it is updated and down to earth. We have bought this book for a couple of our friends that are expecting. It's humorous and really full of information.
Funny parts..it mentions men saying "so long to the breasts for a while" because they belong to the baby. haha And even talks about changing a diaper at a football stadium.
Every New Parent Should Own This Book! by .. Kamaaina Girl (Eugene, OR) This is the book we wish had been around when we had our children over 30 years ago. Who knew that you could quiet a colicky child by wrapping him in a warm towel and sitting on a jiggling dryer? This and many other practical (and the emphasis is on practical in this book) tips are what make this book invaluable. It's written in a humorous style with spare verbiage and fun illustrations, which appeals to many new parents (especially dads) who don't want to plow through chapter after chapter of infinite written detail. In partnership with some of the more detailed books, which a new parent can read at their leisure (if they have any), this book is a treasure. I now order it as a baby gift for every set of new parents. It's a reassuring, helpful, terrific book for parents of newborns, especially.
Entertaining and useful by .. J. Elker (NJ) I'm a new dad and I love this book. I'm a younger father (25-30 range) and this book's sense of humor and direct-style really spoke to me. The info is useful and presented in a way that will help you remember it. If you're an expecting father and want the basics with some nifty bonus tips, go pick this up. You'll have a blast while preparing for fatherhood.
"According to my Daddy book..." by .. blizzard2502 (Greeley, CO United States) I bought this for my husband to announce that we were expecting. He skimmed though it once and while he found it funny, he put it on the shelf to collect dust the next nine months. Once our son arrived I blew off the dust and left it in plain sight for him to remind him he had it.
Our son is now 7 weeks old and he has read it at least 20 times cover to cover and will go back to reference it when we are facing a new baby challenge. At least daily I hear "Well, according to my daddy book...". This book has been a sanity saver for him as it puts the intricacies of having a baby into "man terms". We now buy this book for every new expecting dad we know.

Product Description The Practical English Handbook includes concise explanations, abundant examples and models, ample practice opportunity, and help with all stages of the writing process. A coding system breaks down topics and facilitates student use. The book's compact size allows it to fit comfortably in the hand, while the durable sewn binding will withstand constant use. The MLA and APA documentation guidelines thoroughly reflect the most recent changes. Customer reviews A little gem by .. N. Kittleson (Whitehall, MI) I was required to purchase this text as a freshman in high school in 1972. Its use was required in my English classes all four years of high school, and I continued to refer to it often during both my undergraduate and graduate classes. I have kept my original copy all these years. I am now a high school teacher, and still use many of the examples and exercises with my students. This and The Elements of Style should be on any serious writer's desk.
A Phenomenal Resource by .. Kryptonette (Colorado) About six years ago as an English major at Emory University in Atlanta, I took a wonderful literature course under Dr. William B. Dillingham, one of this book's coauthors. This book was a required purchase (of course). When I pulled it out to use yet again today, I decided to see if it was still being sold on Amazon. I'm so glad it is.
This little book (of which I own the 10th edition) has been an invaluable resource through the years. With a B.A. in English, I am a magazine editor and pride myself on knowing grammar and punctuation, but every once in a while I need a good resource to answer my questions, and this one comes through for me.
Really written for students, with brief quizzes at the end of each chapter, this book is a handy desk reference. The first part of the book goes over the basics (parts of speech, punctuation). The last part addresses the rules for writing research papers.

Product Description Primarily designed to help visual art students make the transition from art school to their own practice, this book is also an excellent resource for practicing artists. This new edition continues to focus on all aspects of the emerging artist's career-studio practice, including developing ties in the art world, documenting work, exhibiting art, writing about art, taking on curatorial responsibilities, addressing financial and legal concerns, and attending graduate school. The text demonstrates how students can make things happen for their careers, in addition to helping them find and approach already-existing outlets for their work. Customer reviews My Review of The Practical Handbook for the Emerging Artist by .. Kimberlee Mcgill (Walnut, CA USA) I am finding the book very helpful. Every artist should read it. It is easy to read, short sweet and to the point. This book was required reading for a class I'm taking on Exhibition Design. I wish it wasn't so expensive!
It's Practical by .. Sean Talley (San Francisco, CA United States) The Practical Handbook for the Emerging Artist is a general introduction to the mundane tasks of the working artist. There's nothing glamorous here. If you're serious about art, you're probably familiar with most of what's covered in the book, but it never hurts to reinforce that knowledge.
This is a handbook and not a coffee table or shelf piece, so take the price break and buy it used.
good practical tips for serious starters by .. Neil Kelly (Aesch, Switzerland) I am a serious starter and enjoy the barrage of intelligence in this book. Great advice that keeps me going.
Waste of money! by .. Jan K. Downs () Why is this book so expensive??? Plus it's out of date. Not worth the $50-$60 you're expected to pay, especially if this is a required text for a college level course.
Lazzari's book is a vital tool, for serious studio artists. by .. () It is a long road from Art School graduation to solo shows in major galleries. Lazzari's book is a vital tool to help navigate that road. The book is filled with practical information, on the business of being an artist, and opportunities in the arts.Much of the information is information you don't, normally, get in Art Schools. Every serious artist needs help with the practical out of the studio stuff. If you do not have a dealer (you trust) or someone who manages your career and finaces, you can use this book. Product Description Any guy who can get not just one but six books-selling well over a million copies, by the way-out of a topic like duct tape has to know how to make people laugh. Tim Nyberg, creator of the Duct Tape books, truly is such a funny person. . . . He brings his bizarre sense of humor to everything he does.Fun is certainly the operative word for Nyberg's latest book, The Practical Joker's Handbook, the only practical joke collection in print. Using his Web site, the author spent six years collecting practical joke and prank ideas from around the world. This definitive handbook features the best and the funniest of these, all designed to remind readers to have fun, not to take life too seriously, and to catch people off-guard to make them laugh. (Potentially harmful jokes and pranks were purposefully omitted.)The results are a hilarious collection of stories, tips, and tactics for bringing humor to the forefront. Nyberg first explains the "art of the joke" then goes on to outline where and how to pull off the best practical gags on friends and loved ones. From how to jury-rig a toilet tank to ways to temporarily hog-tie a coworker's computer mouse to using a kazoo to place an order in the fast-foot drive-through, Nyberg delivers the goods. This one will have readers in stitches! Customer reviews So funny i almost wet my pants by .. ()

A brilliant collection! by .. Julie (Sister Bay, WI) From the tried and true classic practical jokes to many really creative new pranks that are sure to become classics, this collection is great! A must have for anyone with a gently devious mind and a wacky sense of humor. I've seen some of these gags floating around occasionally via email lists, but it's really nice to have them bound into one handy (and quite attractive) volume. I will definitely be giving this "handbook" as gifts during graduation time! My only regret is that I didn't have this book in high school or college.

Product Description Starting with the dawn of effects building and continuing to the present day, this detailed compendium investigates effects pedals and how they can supercharge a guitarist's sound. Experienced player Dave Hunter offers insight from the top builders and tips on how to get the most from each pedal. The author also dissects chains used by top guitarists in creating memorable recordings. The accompanying CD features standard as well as unusual sounds from a wide range of pedals, and classic combinations used by the guitar greats. Customer reviews Very good book, but inevitably limited by .. New England Yankee (Northern New England) Hunter writes very good guitar books and I own a number of them, including this one. Guiter Effects Pedals is well-written. To the extent it has a problem, however, it's coverage. One book, at a point in time, can only hope to cover the barest fraction of the available pedals and makers - even the major ones. Even Guitar Player magazine can't keep up, in spite of their long-running Stompbox Fever series. Along similar lines, it's hopeless to try to cover anything beyond bits and pieces of the philosophies underlying maker's approaches, technology trends, and controversial topics (like true bypass). As a result, while everything in Guitar Effects Pedals is accurate and usable, it inevitably comes off as feeling limited, even dated to a degree. I have to knock a star off for its limits. What it does cover is excellent, however.
I think what most players are really looking for when they buy this book is another Dave Hunter title: The Electric Guitar Sourcebook: How to Find the Sounds You Like. Limited in similar ways, still, it takes a more holistic approach to the end sound, considering the entire chain from guitar to the amp. Check it out.
So, why did I buy Guitar Effects Pedals? Primarily for the interviews with the early major makers in the back of the book. Buy this book if there's something specific inside of interest, or perhaps if you are just starting out considering effects pedals. Don't be suprised after reading this book, though, when someone starts a conversation about pedal effects in entirely new territory.
Pedal reference more than in depth education by .. sgt. pepper (San Diego, CA) I bought this hoping that it would explain the difference in how certain effects pedals achieve their sounds. Although there is a chapter in the book which outlines the basics of the different catagories of effects, it does not elaborate on the details of how they alter the signal. The majority of the book is a history of effects pedals, listing the popular products from various manufacturers as well as a list of famous pedal designers.
I wanted to read about components on the inside of pedals and what each one does in depth. This book does not give you that.
Great Book by .. A. Coombs (Asheville,nc) This is a great book. Well written. Easy to understand. Great dvd that comes with it. It was even better than I thought it would be.
Great BooK!!! by .. Divya De Garde (Boulder, CO) This book will be very helpful to the serious guitarist that seeks to understand guitar effects and their history. If the reader is new to the world of electric guitar effects then this book is a must in order to save time and money to get the right effects and in the right order. If the reader is a more "seasoned" (translate into "older") guitarist the history and trivia will be worth the price not to mention that there is sure to be some items that were previously unknown.
Divwalnut, Boulder, CO
Guitar Effects w/ great examples by .. Jeffrey A. Elliott () Having little to no experience with guitar effects and which pedal does what and, more importantly, what certain effects sound like, I found this book to be an excellent resource. It's also nice that the author doesn't make an attempt to steer the reader to a specific product, model or manufacturer. I found the historical approach to be very interesting and the organization of the book was well thought out. And I also enjoyed the interviews with some selected guitar effects "wizards."
My only complaint is the lack of a sound sample of all of the pedals/effects that were listed in the compendium in both chapters dealing with the effects themselves.
There is a chapter on how best to set up effects for different types of amplifier set ups. But again, the best part of the book is the suggestion throughout that the decision on what effect to buy or how to hook it up is entirely up to the individual and what sound the individual hopes to achieve.
If you're looking for a tutorial on how to wire your own effects, this isn't the book for you.
If you've been playing guitar for years, or are a beginner for that matter, and are looking for ways to create a new sound, then I would highly recommend this book.

Product Description Most dating books are written for women -- what a mistake that is. Women know how to date . . . It’s men who need the help! At last: a blithe, bold, and bawdy guide to building a better boyfriend At some point, every guy -- player, geek, mama’s boy, "regular Joe" -- meets a woman who makes him want to be a boyfriend. A good boyfriend. Problem is, unless he’s had some first-rate training (by a previous girlfriend, a sister, a mom), he probably doesn’t even know what that means. Felicity Huffman and Patricia Wolff come to the rescue with a rollicking -- and whip-smart -- handbook to navigating the minefield of male-female relationships. Directed at men (though of course it’s women who’ll buy it, then leave it at their boyfriend’s place -- accidentally on purpose), A Practical Handbook for the Boyfriend lays out the many steps involved in becoming a good boyfriend, while still maintaining guy-dignity. It covers issues like: -Who decides when you become a boyfriend (answer: She does.) -How to look like you’re listening, even when you’re not (If you’re busted, just say "You’re so pretty, I’m distracted.") -Ten things never to say on the first date (#4: "I just did that to freak you out.") -Finding the middle ground between too cool (think third grade) and too eager (think surprise visits) -Why becoming a good boyfriend is a lot like training for the A team Filled with humor, ribaldry, common sense, and assorted outdoor skills, A Practical Handbook for the Boyfriend is the next dating guide to dominate the bestseller lists. Customer reviews Wow... Just Wow... by .. RDrops () So I got this book because a good friend of my suggested because HE loved this book. I'm a girl and he knows how much I love reading fun relationship books (I really liked he's just not that into you) so he thought I would like this one.
To be honest I didn't like this book at all, it was funny at time but really it sort of made me feel sad for the authors if this is how they think a guy and a girl in a relationship should treat each other and act because it really did play on gender roles when it comes to dating.
If you get this book please take it with a grain of salt, I tried to and it was still hard to read this book all the way through without being annoyed.
It doesn't have the same charm or style as "he's not that into you" so if you are buying this book because you hope to find something similar, move on.
Stereotypical and Painful to Read by .. Emily C. Gori () I did not read the whole book - quite honestly I don't think I could without becoming extremely disgusted by the thought that people take this crap literally. I only read the parts that are available to preview on Amazon, including the multi-page preview of chapter one.
Quite frankly I was apalled at what was written. This book actually goes beyond cliche and classifies women as being worried about petty things - like not wanting to go to a resturant because the paneling reminds her of a party she was at where people made fun of her hair. I don't think like that, and I have yet to meet a woman who does.
They start off presenting on the first page how women's minds are supposedly more neurologically active then men's then claim later on that women are interested primarily in clothes, physical appearance and dieting. I'm sorry, but if women had more brain capacity one would think that they would be concentrating on things far more important. Of course this list doesn't stop with women, oh no. Men, we are told, think of sex, politics, work, and the mechanics of things. These are things I think about way more then the previous list and many things not mentioned here. Notice there are no cross overs, you can read the excerpt for the fuller list and see for yourself that there is no commonality. Women apparently do not think about sex or anything that would cause the actual use of the brain - instead we stand around dieting, fluffing our hair and waiting for a man to come along and take care of us.
This book later on presents women as hysterical basket cases, constantly crying and doing absurd, contridictory things such as blaming the man when something in her life didn't work out. I rarely cry, it is not an every day (or multiple times a day as these authors suggest) event, it is something that happens when a significant disaster has happened in my life. In my opinion, constantly crying takes away the meaning and the sorrow that should be inherent in the act and instead makes it an attention getting device. How shallow and utterly disgussting.
This book on it's back cover says that it is for men who desire to be Mr. Right. Personally I would rather be celebate for the rest of my life then be with the man that this book produces: a shallow man who essentially puts on a performance in order to please a hysterical and cliched woman. Someone who lies, manipulates, and deceives in order to get what he wants.
I'd have problems reading this book even if I was give it for free. This is a symbol of what is wrong with so many relationships and why people turn to self-help books in the first place. Dump this trash and the rest of those relationship books in the trash, be honest, and be yourself. It's the only way to be truly happy and although it may take a little longer to find a partner - you will at least by happy and content with who you are.
Thank You! by .. Christine Krizsa (Alexandria, VA USA) At first, I was worried he wasn't going to like it, he ended up loving it!

Product Description Published in 1991, the first edition of The Practical Handbook of Ground-Water Monitoring quickly became the gold standard reference on the topic of ground-water monitoring. But, as in all rapidly evolving fields, regulations change, technology advances, methods improve, and research reveals flaws in prior thinking. As a consequence, books that document the state of the science, even widely acknowledged definitive works, become outdated and need to be rewritten periodically to stay current. Reflecting this and renamed to highlight its wider scope, The Practical Handbook of Environmental Site Characterization and Ground-Water Monitoring, Second Edition provides an updated look at the field. Completely revised, the book contains so much new information that it has doubled in size. Containing the most up-to-date information available, this second edition emphasizes the practical application of current technology. It covers environmental site characterization and ground-water monitoring in great detail, from the federal regulations that govern environmental investigations, to the various direct and indirect methods of investigating and monitoring the subsurface, to the analysis and interpretation of complex sets of environmental data. Cheaper, better, faster was the mantra of the 1990s, resulting in more streamlined approaches to both environmental site characterization and ground-water monitoring, but also pitting the application of good science against the mandate to get a project done as quickly and inexpensively as possible. This book provides unbiased, technical discussions of the tremendously powerful tools developed in the last decade, helping environmental professionals strike a balance between good science and economics.
