The most frequently-used Portuguese verbs are presented alphabetically in table form, one verb per page. Each verb is completely conjugated in all tenses with English translations. A new index in this edition lists an additional 1,000 verbs with English translations, cross-referenced to verbs that are similarly conjugated in the main text. Language students will find additional material covering idiomatic verb usage, grammatical construction, and more. Customer reviews 501 Portuguese Verbs by .. Paul (NVA) The book took far too long to arrive--about 15 days. Other books I have ordered from your partners usually take about one week.
A great aid for those studying and speaking Portuguese by .. Deborah A. Henson (Newark, CA) Having already purchased the 501 series for Spanish and French, I had no other resource in mind when beginning my studies in the original, European Portuguese. This book has added benefits as it specifies if a verb descended from the original language or if it developed in the former Portuguese territories. It also uses the verb in context to provide a practical usage example of the verb. I highly recommend the 501 book series.
Simplified verbs. by .. SexySmartGal (Mentor, OH USA) Simplified verbs.
Helps you hear the verbs and conjegations when used with other audio CD's if you are a visual learner.

How often do people review verbs? by .. Gil Balanzat () This is a very good product. The verbs have conjugations for every situation (past, present, and any other tenses. hehe.) The only thing that stops me from giving this book a 5 is that, for a beginner, this book can be very confusing. Although, if the buyer were a linguist, this would be such an a amazing tool.

Product Description All the grammar really needed for speaking and comprehending Portuguese. Ideal for self-study or class use, by beginning students or in refresher courses. Emphasis is on explanation rather than rote memory, with inclusion of much phrase material for examples. Can be used as a supplement to phrase study. Customer reviews Helpful grammar review by .. YLSstudent (New Haven, CT USA) This book is a very fast read and is a quick way to gain insight into the grammar of the Portuguese language.
Especially good for spanish speakers by .. Humberto Picardi () Detailed and especially good for spanish speakers who start with a huge vocab advantage but who fall into the trap of "pidgin" portuguese (or portugnol) and want to snap OUT!!
Portuguese language by .. Sonia B. Ramagem (Maryland) Portuguese grammar is terribly difficult. Though I am a native speaker, and have studied in Brazil, I was never really able to master the grammar rules. This book came handy to me.
The Best Portuguese Grammar I've Seen by .. Brandon Simpson (Northern Kentucky) "Essential Portuguese Grammar" is the best book about Portuguese grammar I've seen. I studied Spanish before I decided to study Portuguese, so it was a lot easier to absorb the information in this book. If you've never studied a foreign language before, you may want to brush on your English grammar first.
Here is a list of the items in this book:
Introduction
Word Order
How to Form Questions
Nouns and Articles
Adjectives
Adverbs
Comparisons of Adjectives and Adverbs
Expressing Posession
Demonstrative Adjectives and Pronouns
Personal Pronouns
Negatives
"Que"
Prepositions (para and por)
Verbs and Verbs Tenses
There are more sub-sections in the book, but there are too many to list here. Portuguese and Spanish grammar have something in common. Students of both languages have trouble understanding certain grammatical concepts: the written accents, ser/estar, para/por, imperfect/preterit, and the subjunctive. However, Portuguese still uses the future subjunctive, which is hardly ever used in modern Spanish.
Brandon Simpson
great (short!) grammar book by .. K. Farris () It's a great little grammar book that gives you all the essentials. It's especially helpful if you already know Spanish. It focuses on Brazilian Portuguese, but it clearly makes note of significant differences between Continental and Brazilian Portuguese.
The way that the book is organized was really easy to follow. Although, to really learn the rules, the same page must be reviewed or studied several times. I wish they made a workbook to go with it. Anyway, it's a great learner's tool and quick grammar reference.

Customer reviews Larousse Portuguese English concise dictionary by .. Sam Spade () This dictionary is very useful. As indicated in other reviews the binding is less than great. The strong point of this dictionary is that it includes many phrases related to the word that you are looking up.
THE BES DICTIONARY by .. F. I. Khattab () WHEN PONE IS LEARNING OTHER LANGUAGES, LAROUSSE CANNOT BE BEAT. THEIR DEFINITIONS ARE CONCISE.
Very useful by .. Paul Stevenson (Silver Spring, Maryland, USA) I have been using this dictionary and the Harper Collins Portuguese Concise Dictionary in translation work over the last six months or so. Together, they are quite serviceable. Harper Collins is definitely easier to read, as it is printed on white paper, as opposed to the newsprint Larousse uses. Larousse, however, includes verb tables, while Harper Collins has no such amenity. Larousse also has a section in the middle with cultural and communication information. In my experience with many languages, including Portuguese, no one dictionary has proven perfectly satisfactory for all purposes, so I recommend getting both Larousse and Harper Collins, and for easier reference to the vast array of sometimes quirky verb forms, add 501 Portuguese Verbs.
Really Good Reference by .. M. Evans () I used this dictionary for my beginning Portuguese class, and was very happy with it. More often than not,I was able to find words in this dictionary that my classmates could not find in theirs. It's a little bulky, and probably not good for traveling (too big to put in a regular sized purse), but when I travel to Brazil in a few weeks I will use this dictionary for my classes, and then buy the pocket size for when I am out on the street.
Larousse Concise Dictionary:Portuguese-English/English-Portuguese by .. J. Dixon (white plains, ny usa) My students in an adult ESL class find this dictionary indispensable when working in class or on their own. It is reasonably priced and contains most of what they need.

Customer reviews avoid this book by .. Marc (Washington, DC) This book is a good idea -- it's very handy to combine dictionary/verb tenses/pronunciation guide/phrasebook in a small book. But I ended up finding multiple small errors in it, mistranslations and omissions. Sure, it gets most things right, but a beginners guide to a common language should get *everything* right. Errors make things ten times more confusing.
Really good book! by .. SomeGuy (California) It has Brazilian-Portuguese to English and vice-versa. It also includes LOADS of other info like useful phrases, proper grammar useage, conjugating verbs, prepositions etc, a pronunciation guide, asking questions, and some general facts about Brazil.
Also includes travel help sections such as restaurants, transportation, shopping, entertainment and even safety (Brazil is not the safest country in the world).
There is a list of things NOT to say or do as well. For example, the American "A-Okay" (sign formed with the thumb and forefinger making a circle) is a big insult in Brazil. Better to use a thumbs-up!
Highly recommended!
Very helpful!!! by .. E. A. Franco (Hollywood Ca.) I have been trying to read books written in portuguese and this litle dicctionary is helping a lot, also if you are going to travel will be necessary.

Product Description This Conversational program contains 8 hours of interactive audio-only instruction, effective language learning with real-life spoken practice sessions.HEAR IT, LEARN IT, SPEAK IT®What is the Pimsleur® difference? The Pimsleur Method provides the most effective language-learning program ever developed. The Pimsleur Method gives you quick command of Brazilian Portuguese structure without tedious drills. Learning to speak Brazilian Portuguese can actually be enjoyable and rewarding. The key reason most people struggle with new languages is that they aren't given proper instruction, only bits and pieces of a language. Other language programs sell only these pieces -- dictionaries; grammar books and instructions; lists of hundreds or thousands words and definitions; audios containing useless drills. They leave it to you to assemble these pieces as you try to speak. Pimsleur enables you to spend your time learning to speak the language rather than just studying its parts. When you were learning English, could you speak before you knew how to conjugate verbs? Of course you could. That learning process is what Pimsleur replicates. Pimsleur presents the whole language as one integrated piece so you can succeed. With Pimsleur you get: - Grammar and vocabulary taught together in everyday conversation,
- Interactive audio-only instruction that teaches spoken language organically,
- The flexibility to learn anytime, anywhere,
- 30-minute lessons designed to optimize the amount of language you can learn in one sitting.
Millions of people have used Pimsleur to gain real conversational skills in new languages quickly and easily, wherever and whenever -- without textbooks, written exercises, or drills. Conversational Brazilian Portuguese includes the 10 lessons from Pimsleur's Basic Brazilian Portuguese plus an additional 6 lessons. The 16 lessons in Conversational Brazilian Portuguese are the same first 16 lessons in the Pimsleur Comprehensive Brazilian Portuguese Level 1. Customer reviews esta bem by .. Janice L. Faust (San Francisco, Ca.) I am planning a trip to Brazil next summer to see friends so I thought I would brush up on my Portuguese to surprise them. I spent some time there as a foreign exchange student in high school a million years ago and already spoke a little (very little after so many years) so this course was a bit of a review for me. I found it very helpful and easy to follow. The lessons did hold my interest and covered a good bit of ground with a lot of emphasis on proper pronunciation. I agree with other reviewers that for some just learning Portuguese it would be helpful to see the words in their written form since Portuguese doesn't always sound like it looks. A vocabulary list would be nice. I plan to continue with the series although I think it is a bit expensive.

It Works by .. Gil Balanzat () I was looking for something to teach me basic portuguese and I decided to try this out since I was waiting for my Rosetta Stone to get to me. The teaching system this audio only program uses does work because I remember most of what is taught to me after one or two go throughs. The program is a little too basic for my taste though.
Great learning tool by .. Animal Lover (USA) My husband is Iranian and I am Brazilian. We purchased the Brazilian Portuguese and the Farsi Language programs so we can learn each other's language. It has been great. We are both impressed with each other's ability to communicate in a different language. Product Description Readers who fell in love with Precious Ramotswe, proprietor of The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency, now have new cause for celebration in the protagonist of these three light-footed comic novels by Alexander McCall Smith. Welcome to the insane and rarified world of Professor Dr. Moritz-Maria von Igelfeld of the Institute of Romance Philology. Von Igelfeld is engaged in a never-ending quest to win the respect he feels certain he is due–a quest which has the tendency to go hilariously astray. In Portuguese Irregular Verbs, Professor Dr von Igelfeld learns to play tennis, and forces a college chum to enter into a duel that results in a nipped nose. He also takes a field trip to Ireland where he becomes acquainted with the rich world of archaic Irishisms, and he develops an aching infatuation with a Dentist fatale. Along the way, he takes two ill-fated Italian sojourns, the first merely uncomfortable, the second definitely dangerous. Customer reviews A Light Collection of Vignettes for Fans Only by .. RC Phng Ngyn (Laurel, MD USA) Alexander McCall Smith , author of the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, shifts away from the mystery genre with his series of short novels featuring Professor Dr. Von Igelfeld, the first of which is Portuguese Irregular Verbs, named after the main character's academic magnum opus. A series of light vignettes, the books follows Dr. Von Igelfeld's misadventures as he tries to assert himself as an intellectual in the lost field of romantic philology as well to gain respect from his fellow academics. The results include dangerous amateur duels, obscenities from archaic Ireland, an unsavory tour of India, and toxic water in Venice. Along the way we also meet interesting secondary characters such as a racist Italian innkeeper and a dentist fatale.
While a bit unexpected for fans of his mystery series, the book provides a break from hard-boiled murders and gives us the light side of Mr. McCall Smith. His character Von Igelfeld is thoroughly an underdog and awkwardly lovable, and with each story, we cheer for him even though we know it will not turn out well for him. Despite this, however, the British/European humor is sometimes lost in translation, and for whatever humor there is to laugh at, it is usually a light chuckle or two, not something on the scale of say the Monty Pythons (but of course, the Monty Pythons are in a class of their own).
Overall, the book should be taken as it is: not a serious work of fiction, not part of his usual writing, but something light that can be read in a couple of sittings. However, with this said, the average reader would be disappointed. This should only be recommended to loyal McCall Smith fans.
Von Igelfeld is not "Precious", but He's Interesting by .. Kirby Shelton (Atlanta, Georgia United States) "Portugese Irregular Verbs" is the third or fourth series that Alexander McCall Smith has written. The "professor series" as I like to call them is not as immediately engaging as "The Number One Ladies Detective Agency" series, but a true McCall Smith fan will still find them enjoyable. In this series, McCall Smith captures some of the potential for pettiness that exists in all of our lives and we manage to see the Professor trying to handle his own petty temptations as well as the pettiness of others.
Hey Alex! F--K U! Ya Irregular Dumb f--k author by .. joune (miami, fl usa) I really must agree. this book is definitely a piece of sh-t book . what is up with the title? the author is either, A) an idiot who doesnt realize that he is an idiot. B) an idiot who doesnt mind being an idiot! or, C) the author is actually very slick, and knows that he can f--k people over by deceiving readers with irrelevant titles. I am also disgruntled by the title of the book. such a dishonest author. what a waste of time, energy and moeny. the author has no integrity. this is my only logical conclusion because that is the only reason why he would have entitled the book "verbs". hey alexander mc call Smith......F--k U! guys, dont by this book!

This fully revised and updated course introduces. you to practical themes, such as making travel arrangements, meeting someone new, shopping, and other every day activities. Berrios (San Juan, PR (USA)) The package contains one book plus 2 CDs. The quality of the sound in the CDs is not as good as Plimseur Brazilian Portuguese. The good thing is that you have the book and can see how the words are written in Portuguese.
Best Portuguese language course by .. YLSstudent (New Haven, CT USA) I began my Portuguese study with another course that was horrible; this one is a vast improvement. It is very straightforward and easy to follow. Also, it teaches both Brazilian and European Portuguese. While it is true that this course does not always signal whether the dialogue being spoken is Brazilian or European Portuguese, it is easy to determine this on your own after awhile. All in all, great value, highly recommended.
Not for the novice or casual traveler by .. K. R. Goldman (Potomac, MD) In the past, when I would travel to a country where I could not speak the language, I would pick up some Berlitz tapes and listen to them in the car while driving around. I found that this was a good way to quickly and easily pick up some useful phrases, work on my pronunciation and get a very basic understanding of the language. If this is what you are looking to do, do not buy this product because you are not the target audience.
What I found was that the CDs were pretty much useless without the book. The people speak rather rapidly and you do not always get the English followed by the Portuguese, or vice versa; so sometimes without knowing some Portuguese it is not at all clear what is being said. Also, for a novice, until you figure out the structure of the book, even that can seem a bit confusing.
Once you do understand the structure of the book there are some features that make it a very good reference. First, all the conversations are broken down phrase by phrase in the book. This helps you to understand what each of the Portuguese words correspond to in English. When reading the book, I found this to be the most useful feature. There is also a very nice English-Portuguese & Portuguese-English dictionary in the back.
Bottom line, not right for a casual traveler trying to pick up some basic phrases, may work well for other audiences. Bom dia.
Very Helpful by .. Rob E. (San Francisco) I bought this book for a trip to Brazil. It's a great resource for learning the language, but plan to invest some serious time and effort as Portuguese is a difficult language to pick up for English speakers, even if you already know Spanish. The book and the audio portions go hand in hand, and the book incorporates written and listening exercises which speed your learning.
Lessons are laid out in a straight forward manner and are organized in the book as you are likely to need them (i.e., orienting yourself, purchasing tickets, making hotel reservations, shopping, greetings, etc.).
The book does not make a very good travel companion since it's organized for the learning of the language and not as a quick reference. I would recommend a pocket guide, like those made by Lonely Planet, for travel reference.
move cd files to your ipod and learn on the go by .. Christian B. Jutt (Stockton, CA) what i like the most about this product is that the language lessons are on cd. i just moved them over to itunes and then put them on my ipod. then i was able to practice them wherever i was going. i read the book but not that much ...just enough to figure things out when i had a question. being a fluent spanish speaker i didnt really need to study the grammar that much anyway because it's kind of the same. i (or anyone) just need to listen to the words and phrases over and over again so that I can say things with the right accent/pronunciation and to understand what's being said (at a BASIC level). so ...after studying and listening to the lessons from the course for about a month or so ...i just went to Brazil (Rio of course) and had a great time and was able to communicate fairly well with people who spoke neither english or spanish. it helps SO much to know the basic vocabulary when visiting a country ...thanks to manuela cook.

Customer reviews Great intro to the language! by .. D. Nowlin () It's nice that there actually is an affordable and effective book for a beginner to learn quite a bit of Brazilian Portuguese. I thought this book was really well organized and a solid introduction to the language. There are exercises throughout the book as well to practice what you learned. There is also an audio CD which is helpful (A native Brazilian speaker repeats words and phrases which are also written in the book). The chapters are:
1)Introducing the Portuguese Language (Why learn it, similarities to Spanish, European Portuguese vs. Brazilian Portuguese, tips on learning Portuguese, recognizing what you already know)
2)The Sounds of Portuguese (Portuguese alphabet, accent marks, listening practice, consonants, stress pattern in Portuguese, oral and nasal vowels, typing in Portuguese)
3)Beginning Conversation (Greetings, talking on the phone, saying goodbye, etc)
4)Nouns, Articles, and Contractions
5)Introducing "ser" (the verb "to be")
6)Introducing "estar" (the other verb meaning "to be")
7)Describing People and Things in Portuguese
8)The Vocabulary of Numbers
9)First Conjugation Verbs
10)Second Conjugation Verbs
11)Important Verbs to Know
12)Verb Tenses: an Overview
13)More Verbs
14)Negative Words and Constructions
15)Questions and Exclamations
16)The Future and Other Tenses
17)Imperative and Subjunctive Constructions
18)Carnaval, Samba, Feijoada, and Futebol (Brazilian culture!)
19)Means of Communication (In person, by mail, making phone calls)
20)Traveling to Samba-Land (getting papers in order, hotel reservations, currency, a bit of information about the most popular cities...)
I was mostly looking to learn the language, not the culture, and this book is indeed mostly teaching the language. I liked the bits of information about the culture though in this book and found it interesting.
I definitely recommend this as a book to start off with to anyone serious about learning the language. I went through this while going through Pimsleur lessons for Portuguese and found it to be a great supplement to my learning (In my opinion, Pimsleur goes at quite a slow pace and this book helped me learn more about grammar in a shorter amount of time, as well as expressions, etc, without going at too fast a pace). I recommend it to travelers only if they want to spend some extra time learning a bit more than they absolutely "need".
Brazilian Portugese made fun by .. Carlyle Mallory (Chesapeake, OH USA) Since Brazilian Portugese is one of the two major spoken languages in the southern hemisphere the purchase of the text was a no brainer for me. Having studied Spanish in high school and thru self-study with the aid of such super products as the Penton Overseas products I decided to look into learning some Brazilian. Portugese. This language is one of the Romance languages along with Spanish, French, Italian, and Romanian and many of the words are very similar to either Spanish or Italian. The study of Brazilian Portugese will stand you in good stead if your travel for fun or work in the southern hemisphere. This text even includes a cd to allow you to listen to the language. Boa sorte. CM

Nice Introduction to Brazilian Portuguese by .. Annissa Madison () I chose this out of the many options here because I wanted to focus just on Brazilian Portuguese. I am happy with the book. Mother of three (South Weber, UT USA) I thought this book was very good. It gave each phrase in portuguese, english and written out the way that you would pronounce it. I bought another portuguese book that did not have the pronunciations, and will never do so again if I can help it. In my opinion the english/portuguese dictionaries did not contain enough words in them. There were quite a few times where I didn't have access to the words I was looking for. Overall I think this is a good book and would definately stick with Lonely Plane Phrasebook in the future.
A Good Pocket Guide by .. P. Neumann (Boston, MA) Just got back from Rio and found this version of the guide book very helpful. I would have loved if there was an audio companion to this book. That would have been extremely helpful in getting the right pronunciations. Overall, a great pocket guide.
Really great! But not the best... by .. Boricua (Brooklyn, NY) Really handy! It's unbelievable the amount of rare phrases that are in this book that you can't find anywhere else (example: Pull my finger= Pushe meu dedo). It covers a wide variety of topics like food and sex and parties. However, I found that the pronunciations guide kinda sucks. I'm not sure if I learned a different accent of Brazilian Portuguese (my teacher is from Brasilia), but the phonetic pronunciations they include were way off (for example, they never mention the fact that 'te' as in 'arte' is pronounced like 'chee' as in 'cheese'). Also, the organization of the book could have been a lot better. It took me HOURS to find a basic phrase (I'm hungry) because it was not put in a section with food or anything food/restaurant related. But for the reasonable price and convenient size, it's definitely worth having.
Very helpful by .. Nicholas Tellinger (NYC) I picked up Conversational Brazilian Portuguese: Learn to Speak and Understand Portuguese with Pimsleur Language Programs (Simon & Schuster's Pimsleur), in audio and learned a lot.
