Product Description Get ready for a rousing rebel yell as bestselling author H.W. Crocker, III ( Robert E. Lee on Leadership) charges through bunkers and battlefields in The Politically Incorrect Guide(TM) to the Civil War. Crocker busts myths and shatters stereotypes as he profiles eminent--and colorful--military generals while taking readers through chapters such as "The Civil War in Sixteen Battles You Should Know" and culminating in the most politically incorrect chapter of all, "What if the South Had Won." Revealing little-known truths, like why Robert E. Lee had a higher regard for African Americans than Lincoln did, this is the "P.I.G." that every Civil War buff and Southern partisan will want on their bookshelf, in their classroom, and under their Christmas tree. Customer reviews A realistic southern perspective by .. Dr. Walter R. Schmits, Jr. (Mt Olive, NC) This book summarizes the whole breadth of the Civil War succinctly. We read that the Southern Generals were far superior to those in the North, that it took Lincoln more than 1/2 the war to find a general that fight, although bloody like a steamroller. We then read of interesting biographies of the main players in the conflict, with the noteable absence of my favorite Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, who most reecently a professor of rhetoric at Bowden College in Maine, steeled himself by reading and training to make himself a superior oolonel in charge of the 20th Maine, to hold the left side of the Union line even using a suicidal bayonet charge. He served the 3rd day with Gen Hancock repulsing Pickett's Charge, went on yo be wounded severely in Petersburg. He was mustered out and then became Governor of Maine, carrying that wound the rest of his days.
Really a good book! by .. Miss Magnolia (Lima, Ohio United States) Anyone with a passion for the Civil War - either side - should have this book. Enjoyed it immensely.
politically correct guide to the civil war by .. William B. Webster (palmasola) This is a well written, fast moving, interestng thesis on the civil war from a southerner's point of view. It is well worth reading, particularly if you are unreconstructed.
Really Enjoyed it by .. K. Dan Shalloway () Excellent book. Unfortunantly the people who need to read it most probally won't. For those of you who are considering the book, over half of it is devoted to biographies of the Generals from both sides. The book was very "fair and balanced" on both sides. It really shows how a few small cahnges in leadership or events could have changed the shape of the World
Inspiring acount of the late injustice by .. Robert D. Wilson (Denham Springs, La., CSA) If you ever had any inkling of a doubt that the South was on the correct side of the war, this book will banish those doubts from your mind forever. It is a very informative, well-written even-handed account, giving credit where it is due on both sides. It also very accurately reveals the blatant hostility of the aggressors in the war that destroyed the notion of government of the people, by the people and for the people. Read it today. You owe it to yourself to be properly educated rather than indoctrinated by Yankee propaganda.

Product Description Almost everything you know about American history is wrong, because most textbooks and popular history books are written by left-wing academic historians who treat their biases as fact. But fear not, Professor Thomas Woods has written the perfect antidote. This delightful book--funny and inviting, but factually sound--shatters the myths about American history and separates fact from fiction. Customer reviews Want to learn real History? by .. Phink (Paragould, AR) Great Book backed up by true quotes given by real people. This book puts people like Abraham Lincoln in a different light. I knew most of this stuff before reading the book but I am a student of history; most people are not. If you are more knowledgable than your fellow man when it comes to history or not makes no difference. If you read this book with an open mind you will love it. If you read it with a closed mind or the attitude that what you were taught in school is the correct version of things than you will be sorely dissapointed in this as you will probably call it 'piece of propaganda.'
When I graduated in 1984 I thought Lincoln was almost a God. That's because I was taught that he was almost a God. 7 or 8 years later when I started studying history I realized he is a far different man that what he appeared to be in high school history books. I still admire him but he was not what I thought he was. This book affirms that & if you enjoy this book also read 'the politically incorrect guide to the Confederacy.' That is a great book as well.
Ah, authentic American History by .. Frank Black (Hacienda Heights, CA) An American state possessed the legal right to secede from the Union.
Labor Unions did not stop children labor nor stop 80 hour work weeks.
Many American intellectuals were apologists for Soviet communism.
FDR's New Deal made the depression worst.
These are only but a few specifics they do not teach you in history class.
Brief, but to the point by .. T. Forman (Seatac, Wa United States) I appreciated Prof. Woods touching on the main points directly although briefly. This is understandable as the subjects are varied and cover a somewhat long period of time.
The sources cited at the end of the book are numerous and not individually identified as being endorsed.
This is an excellent primer which will whet the appetite of those seeking to get past the propaganda and help identify subjects of personal importance so further research can be taken on.
it's no secret by .. Lance Vigorous (Escondido, CA USA) "...and it's no secret that Stalin starved his people." maybe it's no secret. neither is it a secret that mao murdered millions of innocent chinese. but it is very un-pc to acknowledge such things, because it leads into dangerous un-pc areas the progressive thought police want to keep you away from. Students might get the wrong ideas about unimportant things such as communism and communist aggression, mccarthyism, nationalism, american sovereignty, private property, freedom and gun ownership; things which really aren't issues in today's world in which we are all citizens of the global village.
Politically Incorrect Guide to American History by .. Essie () I am a history lover and always want to hear the truth. A lot was left out of my history classes when I was a kid. I am glad to see a book like this on the market. It is past time to get the truth out to the children of today instead of the watered down information that is out there now.

Product Description In The Politically Incorrect Guide to the Constitution, readers will follow the Supreme Court as it uses the Constitution as a fig leaf to cover its blatant seizing of the people's right to govern themselves through elections. Gutzman unveils the radical inconsistency between constitutional law and the rule of law, and shows why and how the Supreme Court should be reined in to the proper role assigned to it by the Founders. Customer reviews Look what they have done to us. by .. Robert D. Wilson (Denham Springs, La., CSA) This is a very informative book. It is shocking to see how much has been done right from the beginning to destroy the underpinnings of this country. Everyone should read this and immediately start petitioning your state government to work against the damage done to us by the Supreme(?!?) Court, to the point of resuming the authority ceded to the federal government.
Excellent work! by .. Old McDonald (WV, USA) Mr. Gutzman does a great job of spelling out in detail, but in layman's terms, how our Constitution has been abused almost from the beginning. He also offers useful background on some of the behind-the-scenes negotiations that helped to get it ratified (and the arguments that came back to the fore when the southern states faced the decision of secession 80 years later) and some enlightening insight into the arguments and machinations of various Founding Fathers. He gives far more in-depth, Constitutionally relevant explanations of all of the landmark cases that we had to memorize in our high school history classes (Marbury v. Madison, McCullough v. Maryland, Plessy v. Ferguson, etc.) and makes them easy to understand while he's doing so. I used this as a study reference for a recent final exam in a college class and got an "A".
Proof that Dr. Gutzman is qualified for Second Constitutional Convention by .. Thomas W. Sulcer (Summit, NJ USA) Kevin R. C. Gutzman's supremely excellent Politically Incorrect Guide is not only a wake-up call for concerned Americans and a must-read for every student of American history, but proof that Dr. Gutzman is qualified to serve as a delegate in a Second Constitutional Convention, beginning July 4th, 2009 in Independence Hall, Philadelphia.
Let me explain: I think America's political process is broken. Partisanship is rampant. Congress is gridlocked. The US government is like a crashed computer, unresponsive to keystrokes, unable to confront difficult problems like a financial meltdown, corruption, terrorism, environmental dangers. It can't fix itself. A political elite has installed itself which has rigged re-election rules so there are few, if any, competitive contests; routinely over 90% of Congresspersons are re-elected. Money runs Washington. The Supreme Court has become a highly politicized institution which effectively serves in a legislative capacity, even though this was never the intent of the Framers; justices are unelected, and therefore unaccountable to the people. There is a dangerous concentration of political power away from state governments to the federal government, and within the federal government to the executive. Tocqueville would have described American government as "dangerous". The problems are so serious, in my view, that a change of political parties, a new president, or added amendments will be insufficient to fix America.
The most pressing problem, in my view, is terrorism is un-prevented. A bi-partisan committee recently concluded that a major terrorist incident is likely before 2013, probably a biological attack. This reason, alone, is sufficient to justify a Second Constitutional Convention. My strategy to prevent terrorism is also on Amazon called "Common Sense II: How to Prevent the Three Types of Terrorism." But my critique has never been exposed to serious criticism. I challenge Dr. Gutzman and other experts to show me a better solution to terrorism.
What America needs is a new Constitution, based on the existing one but which (1) prevents crime, tyranny, foreign terrorism (2) limits partisanship (3) restores the federal structure in which states regain their rightful authority to regulate their economies (4) restores a proper balance of power between branches of government (5) defines citizenship as a relation between individual and government which has specific responsibilities as well as privileges (6) explicitly defines the powers of state governments (7) restores the rightful role of the judiciary (8) crafts an intelligent foreign policy architecture that permits long-range decision making.
Dr. Gutzman is one of the few Americans sufficiently knowledgeable to fix America. This book proves my point. So, using my authority as a private citizen, I summon Dr. Gutzman to Philadelphia for the Second Constitutional Convention and I hope he will choose to attend, and urge other delegates to do likewise. Please urge Dr. Gutzman to attend by writing your comments below. It's easy. Click on the button and add your comment. Dr. Gutzman reads these comments because he's in touch with people, unlike Washington politicians.
And buy this book; you won't be disappointed. Highly recommended -- Five stars!!!

Product Description In the beginning, the Bible triggered a revolution in human thought and later established Western civilization's moral and philosophical foundation. Many people though--from authors to pundits--mock it for their own purposes and political agendas. However, the Bible remains the bestselling book of all time, believed by nearly two billion people (Christians and Jews) to be divinely inspired. In his hard-hitting new book, The Politically Incorrect Guide to The Bible, author Robert J. Hutchinson details the facts behind the numerous truths the anti-religious secularists don't want you to know about, including: *Recent archaeological discoveries confirm the historical accuracy of many Bible stories *The Bible made modern science possible (which is why it started in the Middle Ages) *Biblical laws paved the way for democracy and limited government *The Bible promotes human freedom *The enemies of the Bible are enemies of true reason and tolerance In this new installment in the bestselling P.I.G. series, Hutchinson silences the secularists and atheists with historical evidence, undeniable facts, and insightful revelations--proving why the Bible is still the bestselling book of all time--and so much more. Customer reviews Another hit from the PIG folks. by .. William W. Wallace (Tucson, AZ USA) Another hit in the PIG series that every ninth grade should be required to read.
Politically Incorrect Guide To The Bible by .. K. Susan Cockriel () Very good book showing where Athiests, Agnostics and religous cults are wrong in their attach on the Bible. It is all backed up with scipture and with science and plan old logic.
Great Salvo Against Atheist Evangelists by .. ancientexplorer (USA)
This book is a response to the recent barrage of anti-christian books by atheist evangelists. The book serves as an excellent primer to answer the most popular atheist arguments, all of which are old recycled arguments that have been answered time and time again. While the chapters on alleged Bible errors and biblical archeology are light and the book tries to skim by design/evolution, the book shines when it comes to topics I would consider cultural apologetics. For example, Hutchinson writes excellent chapters on what the Bible really states about slavery, homosexuality and government. There is also an excellent chapter on the origins of science in Christianity. While not meant to be an exhaustive book on any of these topics, and a little light on references, it is overall a valuable resource.
Mistitled by .. R. Gantt (Cyberland) The book is mistitled. It is the most politically correct book I have ever seen. It completely misrepresents any interpetation of the bible other than the biblist idolotry of the modern evangelical christianist junta. It drips with contempt at healthy a Christian approach to scripture.
The Politically Incorrect Guide to the Bible by .. A. Fryman (Central Coast, CA) 2 May 2008 - This is a is a useful antidote to faith-phobic propaganda currently disseminated by bestselling authors like Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, and Sam Harris. Hutchinson outlines material from less accessible, heavily scholarly works that confirm the wisdom and truth of the Judeo-Christian tradition. I loved the way he, systematically refutes claims made in an episode of the television show "The West Wing" that deliberately misrepresented the Bible even though I am a fan of the show. Hutchinson also does a great job addressing several popular faith-phobic talking points: that Christianity has murdered billions of people; that the Bible is an absurd book; that there is an inevitable war between Christianity and science or Christianity and democracy; that Christians invented slavery, etc. In dismantling these faith-phobic canards, he calls on published experts in a variety of fields: archaeology, theology, sociology and history.

Product Description The latest installment in the New York Times bestselling Politically Incorrect Guide series expands on the pro-South slant of the hugely successful Politically Incorrect Guide to American History. Author Clint Johnson shows why the South, with its emphasis on traditional values, family, faith, military service, good manners, small government, and independent-minded people, should certainly rise again. Customer reviews Pretty Good Book but Too Many Redneck Jokes by .. Phink (Paragould, AR) I liked this book but there were too many redneck or southern jokes. The kind you get in your email box such as 'southern language' where they tell you what pertnear or yonder means. Once those were done it got much better. You will learn a lot & wonder why it's not taught in school. Well, because schools are politically correct & I betcha if a history teacher taught any of this somewhere like NYC or Boston they'd be branded a racist & the facts of the case would not matter. NYC only fired 3 teachers one year but I betcha it'd be a 4th after I taught this in a NYC public school.
In Support of the South by .. Graymalkin (Roanoke, VA United States) Some complain that Clint Johnson's Politically Incorrect Guide to the South is biased. Well, obviously. That's clearly the intent of the author. Others typically chant "revisionist;" yet, considering how much of the "history" we have been taught in school - particularly where the War Between the States is concerned - is highly subjective, accentuating facts in support of Mr Lincoln and the Union while conveniently omitting facts supporting Mr Davis and the Confederacy, perhaps revision is long overdue. As information comes to light, and existing information is re-examined, is revision on any subject not in order?
I take one example from Johnson: Jamestown and the Arrival of Black Slavery presents the story of Anthony Johnson. Johnson arrived in Jamestown as a slave in 1621, eventually gaining free status. Johnson acquired 250 acres, becoming a successful, wealthy planter. Johnson was also a slave owner. One of his black slaves, John Castor, begged a neighboring white planter to take him from Johnson, claiming he was an indentured servant who had satisfied his indenture, and that Johnson was holding him against his will. In March of 1655, a court ruled that Castor was the property of Johnson - the first time a court in any colony had ruled on the legality of one man owning another.
This case is interesting in that we have been told that the concept of blacks owning land and having slaves are mere "revisionist" history, and that a black suing a white was not possible until Reconstruction.
The facts, unfortunately, are not "politically correct." Case in point: on PBS's website, an article on Johnson conveniently omits the fact that Johnson owned slaves. Also omitted is the Castor conflict. The site mentions "Court records reveal that he had the respect of his community" yet sidesteps the fact that the "court record" referred to is the suit of a black slave owner against a white neighbor seeking return of his (Johnson's) property!
It's 2008, folks. If we haven't evolved to the point of accepting historical facts regardless of their level of "political correctness," then one thing is certain: further "revision" is most assuredly in order to get to the facts. And Clint Johnson's book takes bold, historically verifiable steps toward that goal.
Never apologize for being southern by .. Robert D. Wilson (Denham Springs, La., CSA) This is a refreshing treatment of the best part of this country, and gives hope that maybe we can unite and recover our country from the interlopers that are governing us against our better judgment.
Welcome to the South, love it or leave it. Keep those banners waving, boys. It ain't over yet!
This book is a great addition to your personal library! by .. Guitarpickingirl () The Politically Incorrect Guide to the South is a must-read! I highly recommend this book for academics or for leisurely reading. You will find many interesting facts about southern living, the Civil War and other influential southerns in this book. You will learn facts that modern textbooks and the media won't tell you. It also includes quotes and excerpts of letters ranging from national leaders to everday people, showing their true feelings and opinions on many issues concerning the South, including the Civil War. We need more books like this one that shine a light on the truth. Educate yourself by reading this exciting book. Find out what "politically correct" people don't want you to know!
Superb read by .. MMJacks (Round Rock, Texas USA) Truly a superb read that masterfully sheds light on and corrects the lies promulgated by most textbook writers regarding the War of Northern Aggression against the CSA. As a proud Southerner and Texan, a million kudos to Mr. Johnson for his fine work. Elitist revisionists I'm quite sure have placed him high on their hate lists for his effort, which in turn, makes this a must read for historical truth seekers.

Product Description Islam expert Robert Spencer reveals Islam's ongoing, unshakable quest for global conquest and why the West today faces the same threat as the Crusaders did--and what we can learn from their experience. Customer reviews Sad and divisive by .. D. R. Martz (Los Angeles, California) A book for someone with the emotional maturity of an 8-year-old. This so-called incorrect guide holds back its conspiracy ranting till the second half. There are sufficient facts presented that the book may be worth a tenth of its price, but you may get a headache weeding through the propaganda. Said spin is quite sophisticated, taking the form of debunking the PC opinions that the author says you have. Eventually you will come to understand that the Politically Correct comprise a monumental conspiracy holding - surprise, suprise - any opinion about the subject that the author disagrees with. Ultimately the book is as much about the righteousness of some other religion, but that idea backfires to the point that the underlying message is that all religions are pernicious. The book is divisive, war-mongering, and retro. Whether it is true or not isn't especially relevant simply because the human race will never progress or overcome while our thoughts are guided by children.
If you are a bigot, you will love this book. by .. Doctor Sam (Stanford, CA USA) If you are a racist or a bigot, then this book is for you.
However, if you are NOT an intolerant xenophobe, then you should make sure you do not even touch this book with a ten foot pole.
Reading this book to learn about Islam is equivalent to looking to Timothy McVeigh for more information about Christianity.
This book is an attempt to distort a faith and its followers in a way that makes it seem as if there is a 90% chance your neighbor "Ahmed" is a bloodthirsty terrorist waiting for the right moment to kill you and your family.
Spencer's reprehensible book is riddled with factual inaccuracies, and to put it in layman's terms: it is plain, flat-out WRONG.
Do yourself a favor: stay away from this book. If you really want to learn about a religion, what is the logical thing to do? Look at the scripture of that religion. If you wanted to learn about Christianity, you would read the Bible.
Bottom line: If you want to learn about Islam, this is not the book for you. Buy a Quran with an english translation (if that is your native tongue). I recommend the Yusuf Ali translation: The Holy Qur'an Or you can just google for Quran and find an online, free copy. There you go; after 5 minutes of reading the Quran, you will know more about Islam than after 50 hours of reading and reviewing Spencer's book.
ACCURATE history of the Crusades! What a relief! by .. M. Means (America) This book is incredibly helpful! Amidst allegations of America's role in inciting anti-western civilization jihad actions against our country, I find this book a timely God-send in refuting erroneous claims of anti-Western Civilization historical influences and actions against the rest of the world. A definite must-read for anyone interested in the TRUTH of the crusades, the crusaders' reasons for defending western civilization from zealous and mainstream islamic militancy, and the alleged "peaceful religion and acceptance of all religions" Islamists/Muslims and the liberal media so frequently espouse of Islam. LET FREEDOM RING!!!!!

Well-written and well-documented, this book illuminates the current events in the news and shows the historical context of the current strife in the Middle East. The PC masses cringe at the ugly truth by .. Dolomite (Screwston, TX) This is a great book. In short, it shines light on a subject few know anything about. Product Description Western civilization is under attack. At universities and in the media, professors and pundits decry Western civilization as exploitative, destructive, and without value. But fear not: coming to its defense is Professor Anthony Esolen's The Politically Incorrect Guide(TM) to Western Civilization. This "P.I.G." will knock down the multi-culturalist propaganda and show how the West laid the cornerstones of all modern civilization, including historical, artistic, and intellectual achievements. This new installment in the bestselling P.I.G. series is not just a refreshing roadmap of Western civilization; it is a guide to "us": who we were, who we are, and where we are going. Using historical evidence and compelling arguments, Esolen proves why we not only owe it to history, but also to ourselves to set the record straight and respectfully acknowledge Western civilization's vital role in shaping our values and our world. Customer reviews Roman Catholicism's Western Civilization... by .. Dennis J. Isadore () I have found all of the "Politically Incorrect" guides both informative and entertaining... That is until I read the "Western Civilization" edition. It hardly follows the format for the other guides and ends up being an apologetic for Roman Catholicism. Esolen, admittedly a devout Catholic, goes on a rampage as he blames Protestantism as well as liberalism for all the woes of our culture. He goes on to claim that if we had left the Roman church in charge, all of our problems would have been non-existant. This is NOT a book I would recommend for non-Catholic conservatives nor for Christians in general.
Contents offensive to liberals! Read it for that reason alone. by .. Jeri Nevermind (Idaho) Funny and right on target, this book clearly makes liberals bristle with outrage, as witness some of the reviews. But even without the thrill of going against the liberal hegemony, this book is fun to read and has lots of info no history teacher today will let you know about.
It is painful to recall that once, some fifty or more years ago, universities were crammed with students taking classes in history and English. These departments, now firmly in control of the left, have shrunk to the size of peas. Not many people want to take classes to be hectored by shrill feminists or glowering Marxists who insist that everything in history is about 21st century politics.
What a relief, then, to turn to this book and read some actual truth. "From 962...to 1321...Europe enjoyed one of the most magnificent flourishings of culture the world has seen. In some ways it was the most magnificent" (p 131). Yes, I know. How dare he say it, even if it is the truth?
Best of all is the chapter called Israel: How God Changed the World. This is nothing less than a brilliant discussion of the consequences that followed the Jewish belief in monotheism. I can't recall anything I have read lately that is as good.
This was a God that was above nature "not a nature god" (p 70). It would be the end, eventually, of having a god associated with the monarch. It would bring dignity and human rights to every person on earth. It would yield science. Because God claimed he inented thw world and gave it a destiny, it put all all on a journey toward that destiny.
"It is deeply ironic that they (Jews) should have played so important a role in the development of Western civilization--indeed a central role. They had little to recommend them. They did not invent democracy...We remember them for one thing alone, but it is the most important thing: the revelation of the one, holy, all knowing, almighty, all loving God (p 69).
All the vaunted glories of Rome and Greece, of China and Egypt, were as nothing compared to the gift a scruffy group of herdsmen gave to us.
A Sound Survey by .. Elliott (L.A.) Anthony Esolen examines a wide variety of sources as he builds an alternative view of western civilization. Esolen challenges the currently popular "politically correct" view which holds that the West was built upon a godless and moralless foundation. Certainly, there were those who spoke of good and sound morals, but their words are to be taken with a heavy (lethal) dose of bitter cynicism. It is politically correct to say that there are no absolutes, nothing is purely good or evil. Why, the very notion of an objective (moral) truth is patently absurd, say the politically correct. If anyone needs moral guidelines the state will provide them and enforce them. Of course, the state is dominated by those who adhere to a morally bankrupt ideology.
Those who project this politically correct approach are often very well read. They come heavily armed with quotes and anecdotes. They are magicians who can make your moral doubts disappear. Esolen examines many of the sources of this politically correct mindset. Such thinkers easily overwhelm the unarmed; that is, the students in their classes and the readers of their books. And the masses fall in line.
Esolen carefully examines the Greek and Roman roots of the West. He stresses how the Judeo-Christian tradition has given the West a vital moral focus, which is suppressed and denigrated by the politically correct today.
Even if you don't agree with Esolen's model, the book is a sound guide to the knowledge on which western civilization is based. I found particularly useful his study of Plato, the politics of the Roman Republic, ancient Israel, the Middle Ages, and the Enlightenment. Many of the sources he quotes reflect his apparent background in literature, primarily English and French.
The book is sprinkled with pithy descriptions of people and events. For example, Margaret Sanger was a "hater of blacks, hater of Catholics, admirer of Hitler." Also, Esolen points out that our presidential electoral process undermines potentially dangerous fringe movements because "if you can't win a state, you can't win anything."
Esolen challenges one of the top beliefs of the politically correct: the past was backwards, full of ignorance. Therefore, the present is all that matters, and the future will be bright precisely because it rejects the past. This book clearly demonstrates the wisdom of the past and the great ideas on which the West was built.
Simply awful by .. J. Davis (San Diego, CA United States) This isn't a book of history. It is an excuse for the author to extol religion and conservative ideology and criticize atheism, homosexuality, and other supposed evils. I couldn't even finish the book--it was that bad. Atheists are "slovenly," to take one example of the author's poor writing. Skip this book and read a real history book.
No One Is Good... by .. Scott L. Dickens Jr. () What this book came down to was everything before Jesus was evil and everything now is evil because of our removal of religious piety. He implies that Christianity and the State should be one in the same(Despite what he says the Israel chapter) and that we've fallen from the Number 1 spot in the world is because of heathen liberals. Enlightenment didn't bring about Socialism and Fascism(Which, in and of themselves aren't evil) but the Industrial Revolution brought Socialism and the unhappiness of Democracy AND Communism brought about Fascism. This professor of literture should stick to shakespeare, and leave history to the historians.

Product Description This latest installment in the P.I.G. series provides a provocative, entertaining, and well-documented expose of some of the most shamelessly politicized pseudo-science we are likely to see in our relatively cool lifetimes. Customer reviews Poor, but better than Gore's "Truth" by .. Norman Strojny (western desert of Utah) "The Politically Incorrect Guide to Global warming (and Environmentalism)" is, mostly, poor, due to too much ranting and raving.
However, I consider it better than Gore's "An Inconvienient Truth". First, there are more facts. Second, more of the facts are true. Third, the author actually has more references than Gore's book did.
Unfortunately, both books, this one as well as Gore's, are more about Propaganda than about real science.
I suggest that you seek out a bunch of other books on these subjects and find real data. Personally, my look at the data and the literature seems to show some global warming but not nearly as bad as Gore contends. And, there seems to be stronger and stronger evidence that the warming is not, entirely, due to man's activities.
From my own look at the data and literature, I thing Christtopher C. Horner tells some real whoppers. But, so does Gore. So, buyer BEWARE!
A slice of the broader view of environmental issues by .. Phillip Wilder (Metro area Wash, DC) The lesson that gets taught over and over again without being "learned" very well is the effects of "unintended consequences". This book includes examples of that. Rachel Carson was correct about DDT, however the overzealous implementation of her ideas has led to the hardship of millions wherever malaria is endemic. One should not be gleeful that some of the global warming hyperbole is poked in this book, because there are important nuggets of truth within the PRO environmentalist views. Sometimes I see pollution issues being mixed with climate change causes. The one is an important stewardship issue for humans, the other is based upon a world-view that says people operate the universe.
The value of this book is that regardless of your postition on the topics included, one will learn another view of the issues not being communicated in the mass media. (hence the "Politically Incorrect" in the book title) True dialogue includes listening respectfully to all views.
Follow the Money by .. William Harner (Oxford, Ct USA) Another example of how, as the saying attributed to Benjamin Disraeli goes, there's "Lies, Damn Lies and Statistics". Like many things ( or I should say most things ) when one "follows the money" it often leads to the perpetrator. I remember when my children were small and had all those "why" questions they always do. Other than "why is the sky blue" type questions, the answer, as any good detective will tell you, is usually because of money. Make no mistake, "Global Warming" is about two things, politics and money.
The liberal scare mongering left would want us all to believe that without more government intervention ( which always translates into higher taxes and costs ) we will never survive the latest world ending tragedy upon us. Or as the author humorously notes, their publications about the end of the world always seem to have an annual renewal card enclosed ! The author develops a great case how the Kyoto Protocol is really about controlling Energy Policy. It was rejected by the US and 155 other countries, representing the majority of the world's economic activity and its population. It is a European treaty with one dozen others of which NONE are in fact currently reducing their emissions. How do the BRIC countries feel, Brazil, Russia, India and China ? They are all for having these major countries sign on. Why ? The cost to meet these impossible standards are of such staggering proportions that they gleefully declare "you, but not us". We would only become even more non-competitive with these countries as we are forced to raise our prices astronomically to adhere to the treaty. If you think you have seen jobs lost to overseas countries recently, just wait. "Cap and Trade" is a direct result of this policy, showing us once again how great sums of capital can be realized by producing nothing. I give credit to the people who dream these schemes up though, enriching themselves greatly while impoverishing others. Hey, just another day in the boardroom. OK I admit it, I'm jealous, I actually have to work and produce to earn a paycheck.
And of course, let's not forget, George Bush, who is evil incarnate. He is solely to blame for all the world's problems ( I know this because my liberal friends tell me so, he was even responsible for hurricane Katrina ! ) but none of the positives that may have come about, such as the recent handing over of Iraq's Anbar province to its people, or the successful foiling of terrorists activity within our country's borders. Just a minute while I count up how many attacks since 9/11. Oh, that was easy, it would be NONE. Then we have Nancy Pelosi ( the failed author now ) who is "Trying to save the planet " by refusing to act in the interests of the American people( I thought that was her job )and allow any drilling which would go a long way in helping America become more energy independent. Just as a side note, why haven't any more of those annoying actors and other celebs left the country yet anyway ? They did promise if Bush won a few years back didn't they ? OK, there was Johnny Depp, now living in France. But other than J.D. could it be the simple fact that because it is better here than anywhere else ?
Now, how are the statistics used to prejudice facts you may ask. On page 40 the author explains- "A combination of the absurdities occurred when President Bush introduced his 'Clear Skies Initiative'. This set of regulations aimed to reduce sulphur dioxide emissions by a projected 73 percent, mercury by 69 percent, and nitrogen oxides by 67 percent. Natural Resources Defense Council and their cohorts decried this policy as an increase in pollution. They charged that Bush's policy would triple mercury emissions and increase sulphur by 50 percent. You see, the greens were advocating even stricter rules promising even larger emission reductions, enabling them to characterize 'Clear Skies' as an 'increase,' if only relative to the plans they had drawn up in their fancy offices".
Now I am weak in math but I believe their logic goes something like this - I ( the greenie ) ask for a 60% reduction, and you ( the evil Bush ) want to give me ONLY 40%. Therefore you are giving me an increase of 50% ( add 50% of 40, or 20, to the number 40 and it is now 60 and VOILA - since I wanted 60% and I only got 40%, so you have given me an increase of 50%, not a decrease. This is ENRON type math at the very best. Apparently the facts don't matter when dealing with these people.
Statistical Example #2- the greens would have you believe that based on weather station reporting that the earth's mean temperature is warming. The definition of mean will play no factor in their number. Why ? Because they fail to include the fact that reporting weather stations that were once included were in very cold areas of Russia. As the country began falling apart economically, they took those stations offline, thereby removing those LOW numbers that used to be included, thereby leading to higher overall numbers. Using my weak math skills again, I believe it's like this. I have a series of 20 numbers - 10 are 10 and 10 are 6. The average is 100+60 = 160, now divided by 20 = 8. I introduce the new weather readings( excuse me, numbers ) and have the following after taking the lower reporting stations offline ( sorry, I mean lower numbers out ). I now have the following set of numbers - 10 are still 10 but now only 6 are now 6. This gives me a total of 100+36 = 136. Divide 136 by 16 and the number is 8.5. Oh my word, the temperature of the earth has risen - based on my ( faulty ) SCIENTIFIC METHOD by .5 degrees or statistically by 6.25%. The result is a catastrophic scenario and a huge problem as my "statistical research" just "proved"
( actually, it's only a problem for those interested in keeping the "scientific method" scientific however ).
By the way, the above mentioned 6.25% is an example of how one uses statistics to "prove the point", or as more intelligent, unemotional, nothing financially to gain people may say - "Lie".
Follow the money. Many of the people pushing this agenda also have much to gain financially as new regulations are put into effect. Just look into how much Al Gore has at stake as these regulations become legally mandatory. In case you were not aware, Al Gore has joined Silicon Valley's Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers Venture capital firm. As luck would have it, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers specializes in alternative energy investments. So Al is in a position to greatly profit by the efforts to offset the disasters that are attributed to Global Warming.
The author also discusses that while there are some glaciers receding there are also other glaciers increasing. For some reason we never hear about that but instead get pictures of a polar bear "stranded" on a block of ice floating in the middle of nowhere. Great picture, and really was worth a thousand words but sorry, I was under the impression that polar bears could somehow swim ? ( They can by the way, regardless of what others may try and tell you ). Besides, I have it on good authority that particular bear was simply tired and took a rest by hitching a ride to his next stop. And those great pictures showing the large slabs of ice falling off the icebergs, more "proof" the planet is heating up - or not. The scientific term is "calving" and the author explains how it happens because the iceberg has actually gotten to large to maintain its size so these pieces breaking off happen as a normal course of events and are in no way related to "Global Warming".
If they can keep us in fear, we can be told to turn to them ( government ) for more intervention and regulation to help solve the problems. After all, we all know it worked out so well with their handling of social security and the national debt.
Finally, one of the things the green machine really hates is for someone who decides to learn about this subject to bring up the fact that wasn't it just recently they were predicting we were going to perish from a new ICE AGE ? Or as stated by Nigel Calder in International Wildlife, June of 1975, " The threat of a new ice age must now stand alongside nuclear war as a likely source of wholesale death and misery for mankind". And there was Paul Ehrlich who stated in his 1968 book, "The Population Bomb" that " the battle to feed humanity is over. In the 1970s and 1980s hundreds of millions of people will starve to death in spite of any crash programs embarked upon now". Where did they hide all those bodies anyway ? Oh, I forgot, we are facing a population explosion as well as increased obesity epidemics. But don't ever let the facts get in the way of a good story.
EXAMPLE - please read the few RECENT short articles below regarding global warming at links below. The Science strongly disputes what the Eco's would have you believe

Bogus "science" paid for by oil companies by .. Jeff S. Smith (Denver) Let's see, should we believe the 95% of climate scientists and the IPCC reports on global warming? Or should we believe a man who works for the "Competitive Enterprise Institute", a conservative think tank funded by oil companies like Amoco and Texaco?
Wake up people--global warming naysayers paid by oil companies are hardly credible sources of information.
If thousands of astronomers from around the world said that an asteroid would hit Earth in 30 years, would you believe them? Or would you believe a handful of pseudo-astronomers (paid for by special interests) who claim otherwise?
Shrill diatribe by .. Charles Madden (Salt Lake City, UT United States) This is a shrill and near-libelous diatribe against greens, environmentalists, the media in general, and Al Gore in particular.
Its only redeeming feature is the last two chapters that actually give some reasoned information about why the Kyoto Protocol might be counterproductive.
If you can get that far without going postal, I salute you. These two chapters are the only reason I give this book two stars instead of one.

Product Description In this informative, iconoclastic book, veteran foreign correspondent Sieff offers a jaw-dropping survey of the history and politics of a region that people know surprisingly little about--even though it's never off the front pages. Customer reviews almost...one huge omission by .. A. P. Odonnell (Boston) Mr Sieff
A refreshing piece of work...much straightforward information...BUT you completely missed the 1915 Genocide of a million and a half Armenians by the Young Turk gov't assisted by the Germans....You mentioned the massacres of Armenians 20 years earlier by Hamid...but they were a blip on the bloody timeline compared to 1915?????!!!!....PLEASE EXPAIN THIS OMISSION....My grandparents lost most of their families in the Genocide of 1915.
Some interesting facts, but spectacularly wrong in the main by .. David C. Read (Glendale, CA USA) I have to give this review a couple of stars because Sieff gets two huge issues right. First, he is correct that Bush's Natan Sharansky-inspired policy of promoting democracy in the Muslim world is wrong-headed and potentially very dangerous. History has shown that Muslim voters are liable to elect Islamist governments (Hamas), whereas the autocrats that the Muslim world typically produces are far more likely to brutally suppress Islamism than to be Islamists themselves. Sieff is also absolutely right in urging that U.S. presidents not exhaust themselves trying to obtain the unobtainable--peace between Israel and the Arabs. Sieff says: manage and ameliorate the conflict as best you can, and good fences make good neighbors.
However, I can't give this book more than two stars because Sieff's main thesis--that the Ottoman Empire was the Middle East's good old days, and that Saudi Arabia can function as a sort of Ottoman Empire in the modern Middle East--is comprehensively, ludicrously wrong.
Sieff argues that the Ottomans provided "stability" without defining what that means. I would define stability as a Middle East that doesn't threaten the Western world and pull Western powers into its conflicts. By this definition, the Ottomans provided anything and everything but stability. Right from the beginning, they threatened the Christian West, conquering Greece, the cradle of Western Civilization, and in 1453 finally snuffing out the Eastern Roman Empire. They invaded Southeastern Europe, persecuting the Christian peoples living there; they staffed their Janissary Corps with enslaved, Christian children kidnapped from Europe and forcibly converted to Islam. Much of the violence of post-communist Yugoslavia is a result of the Ottoman invasian, and the resulting patchwork Islamization, of Southeastern Europe. The Ottomans threatened to conquer Vienna in the 1520s and 1530s, and again in 1683.
Obviously, none of the "instability" of the 20th-Century Middle East has ever been remotely as threatening to the West as the Ottoman Empire was throughout most of its history. Even during the 19th Century, the slowly decaying body of the Ottoman Empire constantly drew European powers into its conflicts, as in the Russo-Turkish war of 1828-9, the Crimean War, and the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878. During the Greek insurrection of the 1820s, the Ottomans attempted a scorched earth policy that included enslaving large numbers of Greeks in Egypt. When, in the 19th Century, the Christian populations of Southeastern Europe--the Serbs, Bulgars, Romanians, etc--struggled for their independence, the Ottomans frequently responded by slaughtering thousands upon thousands of them in massacres such as the Batak Massacre. That Sieff is nostaligic for any of this is mind boggling, and more than a little nihilistic.
As ridiculous as are Sieff's fond memories of the Ottomans, his hope that Saudi Arabia can be a force for good in the region is, if possible, even more absurd. At least the Ottomans had an empire to run; the Saudis have only a portion of the Arabian penninsula to run. For good or ill, they can control nothing beyond their borders. But the way they govern their own country--as a THEOCRACY--would not create hope in any sane person for Saudi influence beyond their borders. Unfortunately, this is a subject about which we do not have to guess; as is very well known (although Sieff does not acknowledge it) the Saudis use their vast oil wealth to export their 7th Century ideology by funding mosques and madrassas all around the world. I personally don't believe there is a "moderate" form of Islam. But if there were, that form of Islam is certainly NOT what is being promoted by Saudi oil money in the mosques of Europe and America. Again, this is a well known fact that Sieff does not even attempt to address. In the long run, the Islam promoted by Saudi money is far more threatening to the West than even the Ottoman Empire in its heyday.
The Saudis are our hope for Middle Eastern stability?? Aside from the absurdity of its main thesis, this book has other problems. It is not well organized, it meanders from subject to subject without any organizational or argumentative purpose. Although it is not a long book, it repeats some facts 3 or 4 times, again to no particular purpose. Alas, I'm afraid the normally reliable editors of Regnery's PIG guides have allowed a prankster to tarnish their brand. I think Sieff is pulling our legs. As John McEnroe would say, "You cannot be serious."
An East Coast establishment Machiavelli by .. Ashtar Command (Stockholm, Sweden) This is an extremely curious book. On the one hand, it's written in an unserious, almost frivolous style, with the author constantly trying to provoke his intended readership of "idealist liberals" and "PC Neo-Conservatives" (you heard me). Sometimes, the book sounds like a parody on Mideast foreign policy ghost-written by Michael Moore. And the cover shows a happy, smiling camel on it's way to Cairo! Often, I found myself wondering whether Martin Sieff really is a former foreign correspondent, or some kind of fraud?
But no, he isn't. I think the guy really means it!
What makes "The PIG guide to the Middle East" so interesting, is that Sieff takes an (almost) unabashed, Machiavellian line on the region. He says openly what the American establishment only says behind closed doors. Or used to say, since Shieff believes that Kissinger and Reagan had a better foreign policy than Clinton and Bush Junior. I guess it takes a cynical, worldly-wise foreign correspondent to tell the truth: Machiavelli "R" Us. And he likes every minute of it! Personally, I don't. I'm one of the idealist liberals, I suppose. Still, reading a book by a cynical truth-teller is better than reading the propaganda. I mean, David Horowitz? Please come on...
Sieff believes that democracy can't work in the Middle East. The Arabs are a bunch of primitive, tribalist barbarians. Always have, always will be. They are religious fanatics too. The Iranians are somewhat better, but not much. Democracy in the Middle East means extremists in power, usually anti-American ones. The solution? "Bring back the Ottoman Empire". When the Turks were in charge, the Arabs were kept in check. They were poor, barefoot but not too pregnant. Population figures were low, modern development non-existent, law and order upheld. That's the only way the Middle East can be controlled: by an iron fist, imposed from above. And the iron fist must be Muslim, since Muslims wont accept "infidel" masters. Then the stupid, idealistic Young Turks took power, and they blew it...
It's not entirely clear whether Shieff really believes the story so far, or simply relishes in shocking the PC audience he hopes will pick up his book. But yes, he does say all of this.
The rest of the book is Realpolitik brought up-to-date. The author argues at length that Saudi Arabia is the best US ally in the region, apart from Israel. He further argues that Saddam Hussein, although a crazy butcher, was nevertheless better than Khomeini's Iran, and that Syria have always been better than Iraq, since the Syrians, although anti-American and anti-Israeli, aren't as crazy as Saddam, and better understand the rules of the Machiavellian game. The policy is really a simple one: support Israel to the hilt, strike an alliance with conservative Muslims who hate revolution, and play the others.
The book further argues that Islam isn't really that bad, a humorous contrast to other books in this series, which tend to be anti-Muslim and pro-crusader. For centuries, the author argues, Islam was a politically passive, quietist and conservative religion, Shia Islam in particular. Muslim fundamentalism is a recent, cultish phenomenon, probably inspired by Communism.
In the most controversial part of this "PIG guide", the writer takes on the Iraqi war. He regards the war as a total failure and a deviation from true Realpolitik. For starters, the troops were too few. Perhaps an additional 100,000 might do the trick? More fundamentally, Bush and the Neo-Cons actually think they can create democracy in Iraq. By organizing free elections, dissolving the Baathist security forces, and recruiting Iraqi collaborators, the US have simply fanned the flames of sectarian conflict, emboldened the extremists, and plunged the entire Iraqi nation into bloody civil war. It's not entirely clear, however, what Shieff wants the US to do instead. Withdraw? Call the New York City police? (At one point, he exclaims that "police action" is the best way to deal with insurgents. Since when?)
Of course, our author isn't entirely Machiavellian. He supports Israel 110%, which from a Machiavellian standpoint makes little sense. Indeed, the reason why Sieff wants the US to intervene in the region is the oil. But there is no oil in Israel, and he freely admits that Israel can't police the region. Saudi Arabia can, or so Shieff believes, and they have oil. They also have the Protocols of the Elders of Zion. So why doesn't he simply back the Saudis? Nor does Shieff mention the Iran-Contra Affair. Too Machiavellian, perhaps? Or perhaps he simply doesn't like loosers like Oliver North?
Finally, let's note the irony of having this book published in the PIG Guide series. First, it seems to be the only guide that comes close to criticizing the Iraqi war. Second, it's the only guide that takes "pro-Muslim" positions. It's obvious from some of the other customer reviews that many of the conservative reviewers just don't get it. "Grunt, did he say Saudi Arabia? Grunt, grunt". Yes, he did say that. You've been Conned again. And Regnery Publishing is laughing at you, LOL.
PS. I'm using the term "Machiavellian" in it's "princely" sense. The real Machiavelli was very different. See my review of "The Discourses".
Required reading by .. George F. Patten (N.H.) Should be "required reading" before opening one's mouth about any Mid-East topic. Excellent summary
A most insightful work (as far as it goes) by .. F. Rosenzweig Lives () This book is not a scholar's take on the Middle East. There are no pesky footnotes, no sources provided for many of the fascinating socio/politico/historical facts brought to the reader's attention. Nonetheless, this is an excellent guide to understanding the Middle East, because it is written from the point of view of a NON-cultural relativist, that is, someone who doesn't believe in the multiculturalist axiom that all cultures or civilizations are equal, or one burdened by "white man's guilt syndrome" who deep down believes that non-Western cultures are superior to Western civilization.
This work is a page-turner, with a fresh insight, little-known factoid, or counterintuitive take on practically every page. If you want to better understand the Mideast, you won't go wrong buying this book!
In spite of my encomiums for this book, it has one huge shortcoming. It is actually a big shame that the book pretty much ignores the elephant in the room, the overarching ideological, social, political, cultural and civilizational influence for 1,400 years in what until the 1960s used to be called the Orient (as contradistinguished from the Occident, nowadays, the West), then the Near East, today the Mideast. Martin Seiff inexplicably leaves out a decent primer of indisputably far-and-away the overrarching influence in the region, I-S-L-A-M.
At the dawn of Islam in the 7th Century, most of what is now the Middle East was either Christian or Zoroastrian, with Jews sprinkled about everywhere. North Africa (peopled by the then Euro-centric Berbers) and Egypt (also non-Arab descendants of the ancient Pharoanic Egyptians) were Greco-Christian civilizations, the Levant, Anatolia and Mesopotamia were likewise Christian lands (likewise peopled by non-Arab ethnicities), and Persia was Zoroastrian. All of these non-Muslim, non-Arab lands were conquered by Jihad, and then fully Arabized and Islamicized, with many millions killed or enslaved, and their native civilizations completely annihilated.
The Arabs were and are the greatest imperialists of all time, following the example of the founder of Islam, Mohammed, a socio-political control freak and warrior unsurpassed in world history, because people die every day somewhere in the world in Jihad -- most world terrorism is carried out by Islamists -- in accordance with the teachings of Mohammed, known as the Sunna.
There are a number of highly respected commentators who conclude that the theology of Islam is essentially incompatible with Western-style liberal democracy, individual, minority and human rights, and a civil society marked by rule of law rather than autocracy or dictatorship. Diana West, Serge Trifcovic and the pseudonymous "Spengler" at Asia Times Online come to mind: none of them buy the neocon twaddle that Muslim lands in the Middle East can become democracies, because they understand the role of Islam, the doctrines of Jihad and submission (all Muslims must "submit" -- that is what the word "Islam" means!) -- slavelike, to Allah -- who is akin to an Oriental despot, not the loving God of the Old and New Testament -- and all Jewish and Christian infidels must submit to Islam as dhimmis, semi-slaves under Islamic Law, the Shari'a, while all other kaffirs, "unbelievers" consigned by Allah to Jahahum, Hell and fair game to be killed, robbed, abused, raped, enslaved, etc., such as "polytheists" or animists can be massacred if they do not submit, i.e., convert, to Islam). All of these doctrines of normative Islam are detailed in the three sacred texts of Islam, the Koran, the Hadith (sayings/traditions of Mohammed), and the Sira (canonical biographies of Mohammed).
The real question is, why didn't the author talk about any of this? Two reasons: (1) Most all writers on current events and foreign affairs don't understand the power and influence of Islamic theology and dogma, because they mostly all come from a decidedly secular-humanist background, as opposed to a deeply religious one. They fail to understand that Western values are based on Judeo-Christian doctrines and ethics which are in turn grounded in the ethic of reciprocity (Golden Rule), which does not exist -- alone of the world's great religions -- in Islam! (2) It is supremely politically incorrect to point out that political Islam is in fact diametrically opposed to Judeo-Christian values, something that was openly discussed during the "golden age" of Western Islamic studies by non-Muslim scholars of Islam, circa 1870-1970. If one goes online and reads the entries in the Catholic Encyclopedia of around 1910 (it is in the public domain, no copyright) for "Mohammed" and "Islam," one will get a good (and fascinating) picture of the pre-politically correct Western appraisal of Mohammed and the doctrines of Islam.
Thus, I vehemently disagree with the author's incredibly ill-informed benign view of the retrograde Saudi polity -- a most repressive regime that is the last on earth not to allow women drivers' licenses, that recently banned Bibles from its national airline, and finally got around to outlawing slavery in the 1960s -- which, since the early 1970s, has been pushing a virulently anti-Western, anti-American, antisemitic and profoundly anti-democratic Jihadi version of Islam around the world with its endles billions in petrodollars, namely Whahabbism.
The solution is not to "kill the bastards" Anne Coulter-style. The solution is first to "know our enemy" -- political Islam -- and then to follow through on a longterm plan of disengagement and containment. Then, instead of a "clash of civilizations" we will have a "crash of civilizations" (I got this apt trope from Niall Ferguson, a very insightful historian and commentator), as the different Muslim sects and ethnicities fight each other (the Iran-Iraq War was the longest conventional war of the last century, resulting in over one million dead Muslims!), as they have been wont to do for 1,400 years.

Product Description You think you know about Darwinism and intelligent design, but did you know: *There is no overwhelming evidence for Darwinism; *Intelligent design is based on scientific evidence, not religious belief; *What many public schools teach about Darwinism is based on known falsehoods; *Scientists at major universities believe in intelligent design; *Scientists who question Darwinism are punished--by public institutions using your tax dollars. Battle-hardened veteran with doctorates in biology and theology sets the record straight in The Politically Incorrect Guide to Darwinism and Intelligent Design. Customer reviews An Excellent expose on the politics of Darwinism by .. H. Edwards (Bangkok Thailand) Start by ignoring the ad-hominem attacks of some reviewers. This book is an excellent expose on the underlying politics and protectionism of the Darwinists. Reading the book exposes the common tactics or those on shaky ground be they AGW Warmaholics or evolutionists.
This book is primarily one that exposes many of the underlying flaws and limitations in the current state of study in evolutionary processes. It highlights the same kinds of attacks made on say deniers of anthropogenic global warming as made on anyone who supports the consideration of Intelligent Design (ID).
The fundamentals of ID are mentioned but not in detail and this is why I only gave the book 4 stars. After reading this book, at the very least you should be questioning the tactics of the Darwinists in the US and encourage you to start asking questions about the possibility of ID. There is also no requirement to believe in God to think about the scientific principles behind ID.
Any argument that goes "evolution is true so anything else is false and you have no right to question it" is not science or a scientific process, it is sociology.
Intelligent Design? Poor Science. by .. Peter Hunt (Mountain View, CA USA) Disappointing in both subject matter and execution.
After reading some popular science books about evolution, I picked up this book in the hope of getting a clear, complete and articulate description of Intelligent Design from one of its leading proponents. I hoped it would improve my understanding of the reasoning behind ID, and perhaps reveal and question some of the unspoken assumptions of evolutionary theory.
This book failed to deliver in every way.
The first third of the book was a discussion of the "flaws" in evolutionary theory. Although there were some interesting points raised, almost all were based on misunderstandings or misstatements of evolutionary theory. None of the "flaws" came close to undermining evolutionary theory as the most sound explanation of the evidence. Furthermore, the errors in fact, interpretation and logic were, frankly, laughable.
Next was a discussion of Intelligent Design that was so short, you'd miss it if you skipped a few pages. Even so, it's clear that ID is based on an "analysis" that is purely subjective - whether design can be "inferred" from observation. There's no objective, repeatable method for measuring "design", so any detection of it is little more than opinion. The concept of "irreducible complexity" is an interesting discussion topic, but is nothing new - Darwin himself mentions it in The Origin of Species. Even if examples of it were found, they would at best only raise questions about the dominant role of natural selection in evolution, rather than lend any kind of support to the existence of a designer.
The final half of the book was a mishmash of tired old arguments - including "finely tuned universe", no less - endless rantings of how "Darwinists" have prevented ID from being taught in schools and fired "open-minded" academics, and how "Darwinism" leads to Nazism and immorality. The logic employed in these discussions varied from suspect to non-existent, and unsupported assertions abounded.
I approached this book with an open mind, searching for better understanding, and willing to be convinced of any valid insights and new perspectives that ID could give into the development of life on Earth.
Not only did this book convince me that ID is completely unscientific in basis, but if Wells is representative, its proponents are largely incapable of reason. Not recommended.
Excellent! by .. B. Wouters (Alabama) This is a very good book. If you wish a more scientific approach to ID, I would refer you to Michael Behe's "Edge of Evolution."
Smithy's take. by .. Mr. Courtney Smith (England) I really enjoyed reading this book.Dr Wells does a good job in trying to level the balance that the one eyed media have produced in portraying Darwinism as a fact and anybody deviating from that as a Philistine on a par with those who believe in fairies, little green men and ESP.Well done Jonathan Wells.Your book should be in every library.
Actually, science isn't anything you'd like it to be by .. Dragan Trninic () I started reading this book for fun (why not) at a local book-store while waiting for a tardy friend. It's written in a very friendly "Idiot's guide to..." style, which makes for easy reading. While parts of the book are entertaining, the author ultimately eschews reason for propaganda.
On one hand, Mr. Wells argues (to be honest, he does very little actual arguing - mostly he states "facts") that "Darwinism" is a questionable science. I find this perfectly reasonable, which is why I started reading the book in the first place. However, he then proceeds to claim that intelligent design is a science. Now, I wondered, how will he argue this claim? The reasoning is staggering: we should define science in whatever way necessary to accommodate intelligent design.
Ultimately, this book isn't meant to be taken as serious literature - it's propaganda. If you're wondering "Propaganda on whose behalf?", I suggest you investigate the author: this is usually the first thing to do with politically charged books. While you might get something out of reading it, a serious question remains: if you are interested in a critique of "Darwinism", why not pick up something more substantial, like "Darwin's Black Box"?
