Rough Luxury () I felt it was helpful, this is the first book on lighting that I am reading so I don't have anything to compare it against. Some of the chapters I skipped reading because it was too much into the electrical side (i.e. electrical power distribution) but that may be what someone else needs to know, I just wanted a ground floor introduction on How to light for film making. The DvD was useful.
Great book on lighting! by .. Will Thomas (Houston, Texas United States) Motion Picture and Video Lighting is one of the best book's on lighting I have read.Great illustrations, and information.Great book for anyone who wants to learn,or study lighting.
Best book for DP students by .. Rick Wise (Oakland, CA USA) After a long lifetime as a practicing director of photography, I now also teach graduate film and video lighting at the San Francisco Academy of Art University. In a quest for the best book for my students, one that provides background and needed information to the hands-on work we do, I searched through most of the available texts and found Blain Brown's to be by far the best book out there for aspiring directors of photography. Until this semester, I used his previous edition. I am delighted by this new edition, which brings many out-of-date issues up to date.
For a purely technical book, a gaffer's "bible," see Harry Box's Set Lighting Technician's Handbook, Third Edition: Film Lighting Equipment, Practice, and Electrical Distribution
A completely professional approach by .. brian mclaren (LA) The thing about this book is that it is written from a completely professional point of view. It deals with lighting as it is really practiced on professional movie sets - not like most books on cinematography which seem to be written by people who haven't actually done it all that much in the real world. I've bought about every book there is on movie lighting and most of them are a waste of money. This book covers everything from a basic introduction to color, exposure and electricity up to the more complex technical issues you have to deal with as a gaffer or cinematographer: very thorough and comprehensive. The Set Technicians book is good if all you are trying to be is an electrician, but this is the one you want if you really want to move up as a gaffer, lighting director or Director of Photography. Except for one chapter (film exposure), everything in the book applies equally well to video, digital video or High Def. There is also a very good chapter on video which covers what you REALLY have to know to work in video lighting. If you work (or want to work) in the motion picture industry, knowing lighting is the key to advancement and success. This is the book to get if you really want to learn motion picture and video lighting.
A good lighting manual for a beginning cameraperson. by .. () Blaine Brown's book provides a decent explanation of set lighting, it's instruments and protocol. The text, though, seems to speak more to the cameraperson or AC who is curious about lighting. There is a lack of attention given to the juicers and hammers who are actually creating and shaping the light. There is a considerable amount of text granted to electrics and the distribution of power, but much more thorough and much more practically explained definitions are readily available in Harry Box's "Set Lighting Technician's Handbook."

Product Description During the late 1960s and 70s, a paradigm shift occurred within visual culture: photography and the moving image were absorbed into critical art practices. In particular, these mediums were used to record ephemeral or performative events and to render visible conceptual systems or to question the supposed objectivity of representation itself. This volume focuses primarily on artworks from the last decade and proposes that the extensive use of reproducible mediums in today's art has its roots in an earlier formative period. By the end of the 70s, many artists turned to photography as a vehicle through which to critique photographic representation and to subvert an art system premised on the notion of the original. While this practice came to define much of the 80s postmodern art, its legacy for the 90s was essentially the license to indulge in photographic fantasy, image construction, and cinematic narrative. Artists working today freely manipulate their representations of the empirical world or invent entirely new cosmologies. They process their subject matter through conceptual systems or use digital processes to alter their images. Some directly intervene in the environment, subtly shifting components of the found world and establishing their quiet presence in it; others fabricate entire architectural environments for the camera lens. This current state of the arts and its recent history are represented via more than 150 works by 55 artists, including Nam June Paik, Kara Walker, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Marina Abramovic, Vito Acconci, Ana Mendieta, Bruce Nauman, Robert Smithson, Christian Boltanski, Sophie Calle, Fischli & Weiss, Ann Hamilton, Robert Mapplethorpe, Annette Messager, Cindy Sherman, Bernd and Hilla Becher, Elger Esser, Andreas Gursky, Candida H fer, Thomas Ruff, J rge Sasse, Thomas Struth, Olafur Eliasson, Roni Horn, Gabriel Orozco, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Matthew Barney, Gregory Crewdson, Anna Gaskell, Sam Taylor-Wood, Oliver Boberg, James Casebere, Thomas Demand, Vanessa Beecroft, Wolfgang Tillmans, Patty Chang, Trisha Donnelly, Stan Douglas, Pierre Huyghe, William Kentridge, Steve McQueen, Shirin Neshat, John Pilson and Gillian Wearing. Customer reviews Essays & Photography Great, But Hard to Appreciate Videos by .. () This book accompanies a 2003-2004 exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. It begins with 30 pages of essays: "Introduction," "Picturing Movement, Past and Present," and "Art Photography after Photography." These essays do an excellent job of placing the exhibition in context. In addition, they mention works in a smaller 2002-2003 version of the exhibition in New York, which included some artists (e.g., Vito Acconci, Bruce Nauman, Nam June Paik, and Robert Smithson) not represented in the Bilbao exhibition. The body of the book ("Catalogue Entries") consists of text about and photographs or video stills by 50 artists in alphabetical order (Marina Abramovic through Jane and Louise Wilson). Each of the artists is given up to one page of text. For most of the artists there is only one page of images, but Francis Alys, Matthew Barney, Miles Coolidge, Gregory Crewdson, Rineke Dijkstra, Olafur Eliasson, Peter Fischli / David Weiss, Anna Gaskell, Nan Goldin, Douglas Gordon, Andreas Gursky, Ann Hamilton, Inigo Manglano-Ovalle, Mariko Mori, Aika Noguchi, Catherine Opie, Gabriel Orozco, Pipilotte Rist, Michal Rovner, Thomas Struth, Sam Taylor-Wood, Wolfgang Tillmans, and Kara Walker have at least three pages. Some works by Dijkstra, Gaskell, Goldin, Gursky, Anthony Hernandez, Manglano-Ovalle, Mori, Orozco, Rovner, Thomas Ruff, Taylor-Wood, and Tillmans are not reproduced in the book but were in the exhibition (per the list on pages 205-216). Virtually all of the works are dated 1990-2002; some images of Goldin's were taken in the 1970s and 1980s but were published later. For each artist, 2-4 "selected readings" are listed in the back of the book. The photography is mostly great, but the book does not really do the videos justice for a couple reasons. First, there are not enough stills to give the reader a good idea of the course of each video. I would have preferred a larger number of smaller-sized stills. Second, the one-page-of-text limit for each video artist gives the same amount of space for the massive Cremaster series by Barney as for a three-minute video by Patty Chang. You'll have to travel to Spain to fully appreciate the videos, but meanwhile buy the book from Amazon.com!

Product Description Video communications has long been hailed as the next big technology, but it has been plagued by the shortcomings of proprietary videoconferencing systems and unmet promises of futurists such as the picture phone. Now, the growth in availability of IP communication networks has opened up the practical use of video communications in a tremendous array of applications, including desktop collaboration, training, college recruiting, hiring, finance, justice, distance learning, telemedicine, and more. In Video Communications, the authors detail how the proliferation of IP networks has driven quality improvements and cost savings in video, and has forced service providers and equipment vendors to pay more than just lip service to their ability to deliver video. Case studies demonstrate how businesses enable communications via videoconferences with broadcast quality reception. The book also provides background on the history of video communications and why balky ISDN systems have never been able to deliver on the promise of videoconferencing. The book includes extensive coverage of the mobile video revolution, as video communications and collaboration become practical with smartphones, PDAs, and IP-enabled phones over broadband networks such as GSM, EVDO, and WiMAX. Customer reviews WHERE ARE ALL OF THOSE PICTUREPHONES THAT WE WERE PROMISED? by .. John R. Vacca (Pomeroy, Ohio) It's 2005! Where are all of those picturephones that we were promised back at the 1964 World's Fair at Flushing Meadow, New York? Authors James R. Wilcox and David Gibson, have done an outstanding job of writing a book that answers the preceding question; as well as, discussing today's video communication tools and the applications that are built upon them.
Wilcox and Gibson begin by examining videoconferencing. Next, the authors cover the use of video communication applications. Then, they detail instances in which organizations have leveraged video communication. The authors continue by making the business case for video communications. In addition, the authors next outline the evolution of broadcasting techniques, why there are different television systems in different parts of the world, and what those systems are. They also discuss digital encoding techniques. Next, the authors present a thorough discussion of codecs and the standards that define them. Then, they discuss another aspect of conferencing--audiographics conferencing. The authors continue by discussing the standards for conferencing over IP. In addition, they discuss ATM with regards to physical and data-link layer transmission systems. The authors also cover packet-switched networks in detail. Next, the authors cover how group systems accommodate multiple viewers in a single location. Then, they consider the process of implementing a conventional group-oriented video communication facility that is suitable for routine organizational use. The authors continue by examining how personal conferencing leverages a variety of distance-collaboration tools that are easily used at a personal computer. In addition, the authors provide tips for evaluating and buying personal conferencing systems. Finally, they predict the future of video communications.
With the preceding in mind, the authors have done an excellent job of presenting clearly and concisely the complex subject of video communication. So, perhaps, by the end of this decade, we will all have those picturephones that were promised 40 years ago.

Product Description This book looks at the design of automatic motion picture restoration tools that can be used for enhancing archive material, and reducing the storage requirements necessary for acceptable viewing quality so that data can be recorded on relatively low-cost media. An increasing amount of research is being carried out in the area of visual manipulation, aspects of which include Motion Estimation, Data Reconstruction and Human Visual Perception. Motion Estimation is relevant to everything in video processing, from reconstruction to robotics. Research is also being carried out in the area of post processing decoded video streams to improve the image quality of the film. This research also involves reconstruction. This book addresses both Motion Estimation and Reconstruction, and as such will be of great interest to researchers in both academia and industry. Customer reviews Simply bad by .. Danny S () I loved Tom Schroeppel's great "The Bare Bones Camera Course for Film and Video," so I expected to love this book as well. I got it in the mail the other day and sat down and then read the whole book through. Let me tell you, this book is bad. From the very begining of the book I could tell and it lasted the whole way through, hardly any useful information at all. This is the worst book on creating film or video that I have read yet. I respect the author for his good work on his previous book, but lets face it; this book is awful. It seems as if the author is very good at explaining technical things simply, as he does in his previous book. But his attempt to explain the creation of a film is horrible.
