son's favorite book 5 by .. M. Lariz ()
This is my son's absolute FAVORITE book and has been since he was 6 months (he's 13 months now). He pushes other books away and laughs the whole time we read this. Great book!

Moo, Baa, Blah 2 by .. A. Vance (San Francisco Bay Area)
In looking for another whimsical, creative, offbeat baby book like Pat the Bunny I found that this title was purchased through Amazon by people who bought Pat and so I bought it as well.

I certainly expected Moo Baa to have some more unexpected sounds than just the pigs' "La La La." I also expected it to have some kind of story connecting everything.

Instead the pigs sing -- something not entirely foreign to a baby book -- seven very typical barnyard animals make their actual sounds (along with Rhinoceroses), and finally there's the usual twist where the reader/listener is involved, something that was probably pretty creative the first time it was done.

The cartoons are nicely New-Yorker-esque. But this particular drawing style (not sure if it's always Boynton) has become so popular that it reminds me of a nice font that everyone uses and no one notices any more. At least Eric Carle's style isn't displayed on cartoons taped to office doors and on coffee mugs.

Other than the drawings and the one conceit this is an almost embarrassingly plain book that I do not anticipate using much. I will update the review if somehow my daughter ends up loving it and it inspires her to get involved in amateur theater. Until then I'll have to try hard to read it with any enthusiasm.

Favorite book for our 9 month old 5 by .. Annette (Honolulu, Hawaii)
This is an absolute favorite for our 9-month old son. He loves to turn the pages and squeals in delight when he sees "some other dogs go BOW WOW WOW". Highly recommend this short but funny book!

Fond memories 5 by .. E. Climis (New Haven, CT)
I'm now an adult and have very fond memories of this book (as well as Boynton's other books). My parents read this to me as an infant and I loved it. I will take great pleasure in sharing her books with my own children when I have them.

a fun and light read! 5 by .. Nadz ()
my 19 month old still loves this book.. at around 13 months he would come to me with the book and tell me 'mom MOOO' ... then we'd read the book together, he loves the animals and the words are so easy to memorise so even though we read it a million times (cuz he loves it that much) i can do other things while still reading him the story by heart as he turns each page.
Also , because it is a nice light read I don't mind reading it over and over again as young children seem to constantly want! :)

a must have to keep the kids entertained. 5 by .. vanjovi1 (New Buffalo, MI)
My sons love Highlights and the hidden pictures. We like for him to have something that does not require batteries. A must have for a car ride.

Grandsons love this 5 by .. J. Hamilton (Alaska)

I've ordered several of these for my Grandkids. They love them. I'm glad Highlights for Children makes them in books form.

Mazes 2 by .. Ali ()
I was looking for a book of hidden pictures for elementary age kids. However, the pictures were too visually over-stimulating. There are too many things going on and it was difficult for my younger kids. Recommended for middle school to high school kids.

No Graphic Clues for Little Ones 1 by .. James McGowan (Ridley Park, PA United States)
Unlike the HighLights magazine hidden pictures, there are no picture clues in this book - or any other of the Highlights book series. Highlights magazine shows a panel of pictures that are to be found in the larger picture - a must until your children are at a reasonable reading level. There are only text lists of the hidden items. My two three year old granddaughters are accustomed to seeing picture clues in Highlights magazine, and cannot use these books unless someone sits with them and tells them each item they should be looking for, as they cannot yet read. Maybe a reasonable book for older children, but I have always found that once the children can read they usually lose interest in hidden picture books.

Highlights "hidden picture" book 5 by .. C. Rogan (New York)
This book contains the hidden pictures books that are found in the Highlights magazine. Brings back memories about my favorite part of Highlights when I was a kid.

This is for older kids, 8+ years 4 by .. S. Venkatesh (Dallas, TX USA)
I bought this for my 5 year old, but it didnt interest him (even though several hidden pictures' books interest him). I realized that the activities require much more involved participation than what could be expected of a 5 year old.

Great exercise for little brains 5 by .. frisky2000 (smallville)
Most youngsters love puzzles, but this book offers more than just brain work, it is perfect for rainy days, long trips in the car, or just spending time alone without the drone of television. The puzzles are challenging for ages 5 and up, some more difficult than others, and my kids enjoy the way the items are really well hidden in each scene. I love that it is lengthy and features various themes like Vacation, Meal Time, Playground, and so on. This edition will keep us busy throughout the entire summer vacation.

good gift 4 by .. P. Mikulski (Nome, AK USA)
nice layout, could have used better quality paper and more color print, but all in all a good series of books, great for older kids.

Jazzy J is joyous about Everything Kids Hidden Puzzles! 5 by .. A Mom who Cares ()
We received several of the Everything Kids books in the mail a few days ago and my 6 year old daughter has been having a great time with them. This hidden pictures book is a challenge but she really enjoys spending time on locating the different items. And if you have a 6 year old you know that after a few minutes, losing interest is the norm. So an activity that keeps her attention is always GREAT!

Great fun 5 by .. L. Bryan (Florida)
My five year old loves this, and I enjoy doing it with her, which is more than I can say about some of her books. This was a desperation purchase, late at night, at a drugstore when I realized Valentine's Day was tomorrow and I had nothing to give her. I recommend this book!

A perfect way to use Picture books 5 by .. Joan G. Servis (Clemson, SC)
Ideas for using picture books is so helpful for teachers. Picture books are usually rich with vocabulary and content. Often picture books have an emotional hook. This book is such a help in using that rich resource. Why reinvent the wheel? Just buy this book and plug the ideas into your writing curriculum. I teach third and fourth graders and I can adapt these ideas. Picture books are for all ages.

Nothing But the Best! 5 by .. Libby Jachles (Rochester, NY)
It's here! This is a teaching resource you won't want to be without. New to the traits? This book provides you with a definition of each trait that's user-friendly for teachers and young children. What follows is an annotation of a number of picture books that can be used for the trait. As if that isn't enough, each of the six main traits has three focus lessons and follow-up activities to get you going. For those of us that love teaching with the traits and use them faithfully, this book is an energizer. You'll find new picture books to add to your collection, plus old favorites with new ideas on how to use them.
As a resource person in my school, I'm often asked to do a lesson at the last minute. No problem! I pull out this magic book, look through the lesson, grab a picture book, and I'm good to go. Classroom teachers love the user-friendliness just as much as I do.
Ruth and Ray are to be applauded. In this age of test scores, change, and everything else that's going on, Using Picture Books to Teach Writing With the Traits is a breath of fresh air. It simplifies our teaching lives while making it exciting and fun for teachers and children alike.
Thank you, Ruth and Ray, for yet another excellent teaching resource!

A "Trait-A-Palooza" Pleasing Combination 5 by .. Curriculum Director (Topeka, KS USA)
Just when you think Ruth Culham cannot write a more practical, useful book for helping primary teachers with writing, she does it again! This time, with Raymond Coutu, Ruth shows the practicality of the 6-Traits for young writers by using K-2 picture books. As a curriculum director, I see this book as a starter guide for teaching the traits through the literature described in the book. Following a brief description of the traits, there is a bibliography of great children's literature from which to teach the traits. The focus lessons which follow give the teacher step-by-step ideas for sharing the traits with young writers. Culham and Coutu have concocted a pleasing combination ---a virtual "trait-a-palooza" by blending literature with 6-Trait models of good writing!

It just keeps getting better! 5 by .. Debra Stewart (Topeka, KS USA)
The writing duo of Ruth Culham and Ray Coutu have a hit on their hands and teachers are the ones who will benefit from their newest publication.
Using Picture Books to Teach Writing with the Traits is a resource that every classroom should have available. Each trait has a list of "old-time" favorites along with new titles that will evoke interest in writing for all students. The lessons are well thought out and easy to follow. Because of the format, lessons could be done with any title that is suggested. It also helps the teacher remember those favorites that we have left on the shelf and need to revisit for the love of reading and writing. This is a must buy for every teacher who wants their students to see how reading & writing can be fun.

Excellent resource 5 by .. C. Rios (California)
What a great find! My aspergers child needed a social skills book that went beyond brushing teeth and getting dressed. This book has much more detailed skills such as playing a game, what to do when you don't win...and so forth. My friends with kids like it so much that they want it for their non autistic kids!

All children could benefit from this book 5 by .. Yasmine Lopez (Munich, Germany)
My son really enjoys reading this book a lot. It approaches social situations and appropriate behavior in a written and pictorial method that he can really relate to, and actually enjoys looking at the book and talking about how to do things the 'right way' and 'wrong way'. He loves to pretend to be a space invader now as a joke.

We took it with us on Holiday, and my nephew on his own picked it up and read the entire book. Every parent I know who has seen it, has commented it would also be beneficial for NT children as well.

    highly recommended.

It's a "Must have"-Great book for teaching an autistic child 4 by .. Elizabeth A. Pitts (Fredericksburg, VA.)
This social skills picture book is instrumental in helping my son learn every day life skills through pictures. I borrowed it from a friend and began using it with him. When she asked me to return it, I decided I needed one too. It keeps my son engaged for at least 20-30 minutes at a time and he is communicating with me through questions and giving answers. I have a lot of books and there are none that quite match up to this one. It's a "must have".

    We love it.

My 7 Year Old Aspie LOVES this book! 5 by .. Cyber Gypsy ()
My son and I love this book. The stories and photos are highly relevant, and some make my son laugh. He loves to see how the children do the "wrong" thing and then the "right" way, and finds the wrong way highly amusing. HIGHLY recommended!

My son loves this 4 by .. chellshokr (Florida)
My son and I do one almost every night before bed and he loves it. The pictures are in black and white but that just means that he can color in what he finds.

The only down side I see is that the book doesn't have many puzzles in it.

Picture Puzzle Puzzling 1 by .. Jennifer Falk ()
This book is not for little kids-it is black and white no color at all, not what we expected at all. It is for children who like to color within the lines with thin markers and kids who are old enough to concentrate-likely 10 and over.

Great Entertainment 5 by .. J. L. Suber (Hiram, Ga. USA)

Fabulous Book for your little Captain 5 by .. INTREPID (Long Island, NY)
My 4 year old nephew loves to go boating with me and this book was perfect. It taught him basic boating words by using fun pictures. He now knows his bow from his stern, and cheerfully warns me to watch out for that buoy. I haven't seen another book like it. If you have a little Captain in the house, this book would be perfect to prepare him for next summer's boating season! I highly recommend My First Picture Book of Boating Words to all boating dads and moms.

    Product Description

There's never before been a book like Gallop! Employing a patented new technology called Scanimation, each page is a marvel that brings animals, along with one shining star, to life with art that literally moves. It's impossible not to flip the page, and flip it again, and again, and again.

A first book of motion for kids, it shows a horse in full gallop and a turtle swimming up the page. A dog runs, a cat springs, an eagle soars, and a butterfly flutters. Created by Rufus Butler Seder, an inventor, artist, and filmmaker fascinated by antique optical toys, Scanimation is a state-of-the-art six-phase animation process that combines the "persistence of vision" principle with a striped acetate overlay to give the illusion of movement. It harkens back to the old magical days of the kinetoscope, and the effect is astonishing, like a Muybridge photo series springing into action—or, in terms kids can relate to, like a video without a screen. Complementing the art is a delightful rhyming text full of simple questions and fun, nonsense replies: Can you gallop like a horse? giddyup-a-loo! Can you strut like a rooster? cock-a-doodle-doo!

Every child who opens the book will be amazed—and so will every parent.

WOW!!! that just about covers how you will enjoy this book!AMAZING! 5 by .. J. Ackert (Green Mountains, USA)
First I'd like to say that I have a lot of books! By a lot, I mean thousands(I have a problem-I know!) I have worked running book sales for Scholastic for years and I have seen many books BUT this one stands out from the masses!I purchased this for my 16 and 4 year old daughters.I am not sure who loved it most! I do know that my husband and I LOVE it! I have a friend who is into holograms and fun things of that nature and I am buying him one-and he is 50! This book is easily enjoyed by anyone age 3 and over. The words are minimal, and colorful, but the pictures say it all.The movement is amazing. Not like some books where it is difficult to see the animals moving well. With each turn of the page they move fast and furious-and they look great! YOU MUST GET THIS BOOK!Enjoy!

Great book with technology but lacking in text quality. 4 by .. H. M. Hudson (Madison, WI)
My son really enjoys this book because of the scanamination. It's really cool. But I found the writing lacking- not memorable or catchy at all.

Great for in the car 5 by .. hre2 (Provo, UT)
Someone once recommended pop-up books for kids to look at on a long car trip. I would add this book to that recommendation. It is excellent for a child to enjoy even if you're unable to read it to them at the moment.

Create an appreciation of books, early! 5 by .. Karen S. Knoll (cincinnati, oh)
I saw this book in a shop while on vacation. Once home I ordered it for my grandson (18 mos) for part of his Christmas. I am always on the lookout for unique books for my grandchildren. Books with beautiful artwork, heartfelt stories, tactile pages, etc. This book starts a whole new genre in our "library"--animation!

Great gift book for girls and boys of wide range of ages 5 by .. Ana N. Cervantes ()
My 3 year old daughter received this book as a gift from grandma, and I have since purchased multiple copies of this book and the Swing! book (companion book with sports theme) and have given it as a gift to children from infancy to age 3. It is very cool. Yes, the text leaves a lot to be desired, but it makes up for it with the pictures. I highly recommend both books. The cards, which are based on this book, are also neat, and come with stickers so that you can personalize them for a variety of occasions.
