Product Description This new edition of Schaum's Outline of Electric Circuits give readers a thorough foundation in the theory and operation of electric circuits. This bestselling outline combines brief descriptions of theory with illustrative examples, solved problems, and supplement problems to provide a direct and effective tool and methodology for learning. Customer reviews Not a good one by .. A. Obalereko () I had purchased this book due to all the good reviews it had, was going to use it in addition to my circuit textbook to help me out in the class, it turned out to be a waste of money, bad explanation and did not have enough examples
Circuits by .. Larry H. Harris () This book covers the first two levels of Engineering classes on circuit analysis. A great study aid and test prep.
textbook standard by .. Books Lover () This is the book that should be made as textbook for ECE textbook, instead of all those big, fat, and expensive ones. ECE textbooks should be like this! precise, to-the-point, clarity, lots of detailed examples! I hate schools that just want to make more profit from students by having them to buy those new expensive books. of course, there's no way to cover all those materials in those kinds of books.
decent materials but bad binding by .. Dolly Lemon (San Francisco, CA) The book itself is a decent collection of practice problems. However, I ended up with a copy that was stiched together improperly. For some reason, the first 32 pages appears twice, skipping the the second 32 pages of the book such that parts of chapter 3 and all of chapter 4 are completely missing. I couldn't return the item due to the policy of the seller regarding books lik Shaum's, but I was given the publisher's phone number. Let's hope I can get this resolved satisfactorily.
Excellent supplemental textbook on circuit analysis and design topics by .. calvinnme (Fredericksburg, Va) This is an excellent study guide for electrical engineering students that will serve them well in their two-semester DC circuits sequence, linear circuits, electronic circuit design sequence, and power circuits. It is another one of those Schaum's outlines that is clear and complete enough to double as a textbook on the topic of circuit analysis and design. It starts out defining basic electric circuit concepts and terms such as potential, charge, current, resistance, capacitance, and inductance. It then moves on to circuit laws and then circuit analysis methods. It then explains the amplifier model in terms of components that have already been defined, and from there describes the operational amplifier and shows how to design using this device. The chapter on waveforms and signals is an excellent one, and is a topic often overlooked and shortchanged in most electrical engineering textbooks. The chapters on first-order and higher-order circuits do an excellent job of venturing into the world of linear RLC circuits and shows how to use calculus and differential equations to solve for the voltage and current equations of these types of circuits. Included also are more direct methods of analysis including complex frequency and pole-zero plots. The next major topic to be broached is that of analysis and design of power circuits. This is an often ignored subject in the electrical engineering curriculum, and the two chapters are good foundations on the topic. Besides just explaining polyphase power circuits, the outline actually takes the time to explain why such circuits are desirable when power generation is the goal. The next three chapters do some clean up on miscellaneous circuit analysis and design topics - frequency response, two-port networks and their characteristics, and mutual inductance and transformers, which is the basis of courses on electromechanical machines. The chapter on mutual inductance is the weakest chapter in the book, with less explanation than in the rest of the outline. There is a good chapter on using the industry standard Spice and PSpice software for circuit design. The final two chapters are applied chapters on the Laplace and Fourier transforms and their use in circuit analysis and design. For those whose basic mathematics may be rusty, the appendices cover basic matrix algebra and the mathematics of complex numbers.
I used the first edition of this outline in the late 70's to help iron out concepts that were not clearly presented in my undergraduate textbooks. I kept it around over the years to serve as a reference. I just recently upgraded to the current fourth edition, and the subject matter and organization of material has changed over the years but not the high quality of the content. I highly recommend this outline to undergraduate electrical engineering students who want a high quality supplemental textbook that will serve them from their sophomore year until graduation. One reviewer lamented that there were quite a few errors in the solved problem sections. However, this review was very old - 1999 I believe - and was written before this current fourth edition was written. I have not found any errors in the solutions so far, so apparently this latest edition has cleared up that past problem.

Product Description More than 50,000 copies of this powerful study guide sold in the first edition! Covering a broad range of topics, from simple DC magnetic circuits to electronic control of DC and AC motors, all the concepts and their applications are clearly explained and illustrated. Includes hundreds of problems with detailed solutions to help students learn quickly and reaise test scores without investing unnecessary time. Ideal for undergraduate students of electrical engineering, for solo study, and as a refresher. Customer reviews Really great supplemental text and source of problems by .. calvinnme (Fredericksburg, Va) This book doubles as a cheap textbook on the subject it covers - electric machines and electromechanics. If I remember correctly, this was not one of the more difficult upper undergraduate Electrical Engineering courses, but that was because I had a very good instructor. The textbook itself was somewhat useless...and expensive. This text has plenty of well done narrative explaining all of the concepts. With this particular subject, good figures are important too, and they are plentiful in this Schaum's outline. Equations are all explained and presented well, with lots of example problems as well as solved exercises. I particularly liked the last chapter in the book on the electronic control of electric machines. It does a good job of merging what is really two subject matters and explains concepts well. It shows Electrical Engineering students that all of these courses don't exist in a vacuum. You are going to need to learn how to merge electromechanics, electronics, and digital systems into unified designs, and this book gets you started down that road. One reviewer said that he/she thought the outline was dated. I haven't found that to be true at all, at least for the situations where I've required some brushing up. The student should already have an understanding of electric and electronic circuits, basic electromagnetics, and calculus. Highly recommended.
Weak on PM Machines by .. Mr. Ronald D. Bremner (Iowa USA) Good book overall, but is getting dated. Most of the problems seem to be done in Gauss and Oersteds, and I don't believe there were any problems which used Neodemium magnets, which are most common in newer, high efficiency motors.
There was also very little on Permanent Magnet machines, about 6 pages, much of which was diagrams or descriptions of magnet types. Am still looking for a good book with problems on Permanent Magnet motors and generators.
Am using Hendershot and Miller's Design of Brushless Permanent Magnet Motors, which is very good. But it does not have many problems in it.
Helpful tool for electrical machine problems by .. () I found that this book is a very useful source for solving problems related to elctrical machines. It provides clear and easy to follow instructions that are well laid out and easy to follow. It offers a varying level of problems ranging from the fundamentals through to the more complex machine problems. This is a useful aid or reference for anyone looking for a book to help them in their studies and wants to have more practice at solving problems relating to this subject.

Customer reviews An excellent introduction and reference for the theory and fundamentals by .. David Dare (Newport, RI USA) This is a text book for engineers (electrical and mechancial primarily) to learn about various kinds of electric machines and their fundamental theories of operation and design. This is one of the best of those books and not meant to be one that is picked up by the casual "tinker" or even an engineer looking for a quick application guide to DC motors. This is a thorough text book on these devices for those who need to engineer for design objectives.

Needs Improving by .. E. S. Hennessey (Cedarville, OH United States) I used this text in an elective on electrical machines and found the book very difficult to learn from. Readability is not bad. The writing is fine and easy enough to follow but the equations in the text were frequently the wrong equation for the topic. Several tables had eroneous information. While most text books contain some errata, this book contained more than any of the dozens of engineering books in my personal library. None of the end of chapter problems had any answers in order to check work. While only a nuisance, example problems in the text would reference a machine from several chapters back, requiring the reader to flip back and forth to understand the situation of the current example. I did appreciate the fact that the book includes matlab examples and exercises as to aid understanding with simulations.
Complete without being difficult by .. (Brazil) This book may be considered a reference in the study of electric machines, because it brings the main aspects of electromechanical energy conversion devices without being difficult to understand. Its way for explaining the relations of power/current/torque in induction machines is the best one I've seen in any book.
Electric machinery easy at high level by .. () The most powerfull book in Electric Machinery for
the beginners and experts, at the same level of
complexity (it's hard to read but it's very interesting in the way of presenting the contents...), requires some background in theory of electrical circuits and systems
