Great for young readers 5 by .. Tina B. (Buffalo, NY)
This book is great for young readers. It's so bright and the little doors are great to captivate the attention of little kids. My son had this book for over two years and it went everywhere with us. It's just the right size for little hands. (bought this one for my niece)

A favorite 4 by .. CSNB (Maryland)
My 15 month old son loves this book and he gets better and better at lifting the flaps each time we read it. The only disappoinment was how small it was, but it is great for the diaper bag.

Great book 5 by .. Angeline Rose (Austin, TX)
Another toddler favorite! This one is small enough for toddler hands so my son liked this one more than the others. Good board book that can take abuse.

Very good reading for certain adults, too 5 by .. R. S. Wenocur ()
When I was tutoring an otherwise bright person who wanted to learn word processing, I noticed that she needed help with grammar and reading, too. This book is an excellent choice for an adult who uses poor grammar and has a low reading level. This person is middle-aged, 50-something, and loved the charming farm animals. She enjoyed using this book immensely herself, sharing it with her little child, too.

Both of my kids LOVED this little book & still do! 5 by .. Kristie Finnan (Author of Mommy's High Heel Shoes) (www.mommyshoes.com)
I bought this tiny book 4 years ago at one of our local book shops. It is now tattered and torn from all the use it has gotten over the years by both of my kids! But it is still one of their favorites. It has taken a beating and we still keep reading! This is the book that I keep in my purse or diaper bag to keep my kids occupied at a restaurant, in a waiting room or at the grocery store. It really is a simple little book with just the right number of peek a boo flaps! I highly recommend this tiny board book to any family on the go :)Mommy's High Heel Shoes

"Excuse me, but who do you think you are, opening this book when the cover clearly says, DO NOT OPEN THIS BOOK? The reason you weren't supposed to open this book is because it is not yet written!...You think it's easy to put words together? Hah! Now go away--I need time to think."
So begins Pig's valiant attempt to pen his masterpiece. But he is constantly interrupted by the reader who is seduced at every turn into foiling his efforts ("please go away" "please do not turn the page")--until at last we reach the final page & discover that together, Pig & the reader have indeed created a book.

Fun Reading for Kids (and Big Kids!) 5 by .. lady (Australia)
This book is great, we first come across it in our local library, my six year old daughter did not want to return it!

It makes reading for kids so much fun and adults reading to children fun too! Try it!!

Terrific Book! 5 by .. Christine Valine (Sacramento, CA United States)
My 4-year-old grandson loves this book. We read it together over and over. He laughs and giggles at the part where I enter his name in the blanks, especially when we enter other names, like 'grandma" or "grandpa."

Do Not Open This Book 5 by .. Petra Siprian (Villa Park, IL United States)
Do Not Open This Book is a good addition to the library of books to reinforce the Six Traits of Writing. I plan to use it to show examples of ideas, word choice, organization, and mechanics.

Opened many times 4 by .. Woodge (Newburyport, MA USA)
My son received this book as a gift about a year ago and he's six now and still loves it. And then a few days ago, he surprised his mother by opening the book and proceeding to read it to her nearly word for word. He's in kindergarten so we had no idea his reading ability had reached this far. (We read to him nightly). Anyway, this book has achieved its own place in our family history.

My daughter loves this book 5 by .. Beanbag Love (Southern California)
I mean REALLY loves it. She took it out of the library and I had to force her to take it back because other kids wanted it. When I ordered it she asked me every day if I thought it would come.

It's a very cute book with lots of vocabulary so I, as a parent, can recommend it very highly.

But just realize it may become an addiction to your young reader.

You've been warned!!!

"Read even the first chapter of this extraordinary book and you'll find yourself cheering, screaming, jumping up and down with excitement. The companies described in this book are decades ahead of the reengineers -- and you don't need to be a Bill Gates or a Jack Welch to put their ideas into practice today." -- George Gendron, editor in chief, Inc.

"Companies that practice open-book management seem to have captured some sort of lightning in a bottle." -- Chris Lee, Training

"This book should be required reading in corporate America." -- Chicago Tribune

"If you want to give your preconceived notions a good kick in the you-know-where, give Case the opportunity to articulate the merits of open-book management." -- Entrepreneur

Open-book management is not so much a technique as a way of thinking, a process that actively involves employees in the financial life of the company. Numerous companies have already found that employees who are informed and aware of the company's financial situation are motivated to seek solutions to problems and assume a greater degree of responsibility for its performance. John Case begins by examining the current competitive climate and the history of established management techniques. He shows how the traditional treatment of workers as "hired hands" with little involvement or responsibility beyond their own area is no longer effective in today's ever more competitive global environment.

Case clearly and carefully explains the principles of open-book management: timely sharing of crucial financial information with employees; educating the employees to understand and apply the information; empowering employees to apply the information to their own work; and offering employees a stake in the successful implementation of their ideas. Open-book management will take different forms at every company, Case notes, but he offers a wide range of suggestions and guidelines for implementing these principles. He concludes with a series of in-depth case studies, featuring companies of various sizes and financial situations that have successfully implemented open-book management. Open-Book Management is the indispensable guide to teaching employees how to think and act like owners.

This is THE KEY to successful management! 5 by .. Eric Kassan (Las Vegas, NV USA)
What do TQM, reengineering, empowerment, teaming, and even six sigma have in common? They all implement parts of open-book management. And that's the reason they all have spotty records- they were successful when they, accidentally, incorporated enough of the rest of open-book management.

The principle here is very simple- instead of your company or division relying on only the handful of minds at the top of the organization to improve the company, it treats all the employees as adults with brains and encourages everyone to work for the company's benefit. This also has the effect of reducing or eliminating office politics since everyone's pulling in the same direction.

How? Fortunately the process is pretty simple, though it needs to be tailored to each business. The pieces are:
1. Giving employees all relevant financial information,
2. Giving employees training to understand the financial information,
3. Giving employees appropriate responsibility for the numbers under their control, and
4. Giving employees appropriate stakes in the outcomes (through bonuses, stock, options, etc.).

It's Here...It's Now...It's Happening 5 by .. Robert Morris (Dallas, Texas)
When Open-Book Management was first in 1995, its subtitle suggested "The Coming Business Revolution." Well, that "revolution" has arrived and author John Case deserves much of the credit. In the Introduction, however, he makes it crystal clear that open-book management is NOT a panacea, is NOT a substitute for TQM or reengineering or any other operational overhaul, and is NOT a single system. In essence, open-book management helps companies to create a shared environment in which everyone understands that they are competing in a marketplace, trying to make money. But for whom? Frequently, effective ownership has been limited to relatively few people. In privately-held companies, usually to a single person and/or to a family. Presumably Case agrees with Al Ehrbar (author of EVA) that the traditional concept of "ownership" must be re-defined so that everyone involved in a given enterprise assumes personal responsibility for adding value. Hence the importance of recognition of peak performance but also the importance of financial incentives. "What's in it for me?" is a quite legitimate question. Given the increasingly greater impact of globalization, the information revolution, and what Case calls "entrepreneuralization", companies must find new and better ways to answer that question. For Case, each company needs a mission, a strategy. "But more than anything else it needs eager, willing employees, people who have a reason to care about their employer's prosperity and who know how to help it succeed."

Ultimately, the measurable value of open-book principles will be determined by several factors: The extent to which a company modifies them to accommodate its own circumstances; the extent to which employees in that company (top to bottom) commit to the program, once devised; and the extent to which everyone involved shares equitably (NOT equally) in the rewards.

Those who admire this book as much as I do will presumably want to read (if they have not already read) The Open-Book Field Book and The Open-Book Experience. These two books develop in much greater detail the material first introduced in Open-Book Management. Also, they provide an absolutely essential guide to deriving maximum benefit from John Case's wisdom and experience.

Employees at open book companies act (and profit)like owners 5 by .. ()
Case shows, with many examples from open book companies, that companies' performance really takes off (or pulls out of jeopardy) when they organize to: 1. Give all their financial information to all employees; 2. Teach employees to understand it; and 3. Give employees a financial stake in how the company performs. In summary, experience shows that employees at open book companies act like owners. Case shows exactly how to do it. Give this book to your boss!

Book About US OPEN Tennis in NY 5 by .. Mitzi L. Heim (Kent, WA.)
This is a magnificent book about the US Tennis background held in NY every year. The book is large and extremely informative. There are numerous photos of the past players etc. It is well worth reading and keeping in any library.

Wonderful 5 by .. Jennifer G. Liguori ()
This is a lovely book, which will we will want to own, but also makes a great gift.

Great photos, and more. 5 by .. Kelly Wohlbier (Stevens Point, WI USA)
The first thing I did when I opened this book was to look at the pictures; all of them! The photography is so spectacular that I couldn't stop until I saw them all. The Open Book is a history of the US Open Tennis Championships during the 40 years of the "open" (professional) era of tennis. It covers each decade since the beginning of the open era in 1968, using photos, statistics, and articles by famous tennis journalists. The photographs, as mentioned above, are amazing, and lead you through the story of the Open, with a few thrown in "out of order" to make you think about the connections between players of different decades, and to marvel at the way the game of tennis has changed over the years. I found it interesting to read the articles and opinions written during each phase of the change over from the amateur to professional era, through the institution of the tie break, equal prize money for women players, and the birth of the National Tennis Center. The statistics are interesting, but don't make your eyes glaze over if you're not a stats person, and there is also a dvd with information about the players immortalized on the Us Open Court of Champions. This book has so much information, that I expect to find something I "missed the first time", every time I open the book. As an avid tennis player and fan, I highly recommend "The Open Book" to anyone who has an interest in the game.

This all-time favorite is now available as a Big Little Golden Book—perfect for lap-time reading.

Very good book!!! 5 by .. Denise Ogerly (Texas)
I know I am REALLY dating myself, but this book was originally published the year I was born. I remember reading it in the school library a few times in elementary and I NEVER forgot it.
I now have 2 four year old daughters who ADORE this book! It has colorful pics in it, and it's repetitive phrases have them basically verbally reading it along with me. It is short and to the point, easy to read, and very enjoyable!

The BEST book! 5 by .. Lenore (Pittsburgh, PA)
This is one of my all-time favorite books and was how I "learned" to read - really, I had all of the words memorized because it was read to me SO much. Even if you're not a Sesamee Street, you'll still love this book.

3 yr old loves it 5 by .. Laurie A. Ramirez (Southern Ca)
I bought this book for my grandson because my two grown kids both had loved it. The only thing I recommend (my opinion only) is to think about getting the book without the popups (The Monster at the End of this Book, is the same one). Since this is his favorite book, he always wants it with him. It took him no time for him to destroy it. I had to rely on my kids' old one with the dog-chewed corners.

Great book for kids!! 5 by .. Krishelle Haderlie ()
I remember loving this book as a kid. We came upon it at the library and my kids haven't put it down. It really is such a fun book, especially when it's read animated.

Product Description

This is a book about books, about the pleasures, passions, and rewards of reading, about authors who are dedicated to the act of writing, and readers who are devoted to the joys of words in the right order. Funny, moving, and beautiful, it features an eclectic selection from some of the world's finest writers, as well sixteen full-color paintings by artist and editor Bascove. Both its contents and its production are guaranteed to satisfy the most demanding and discriminating tastes.

From Italo Calvino's meditation on the difficulties of selecting a title in a bookstore, to Virginia Woolf's essay on the joys of the "common reader," from Cervantes's depiction of the burning of Don Quixote's books to Anne Fadiman's musings on the courtly (and carnal) ways to mark one's passage through the terrain of a text, Where Books Falls Open testifes, in words and image, to the strength and endurance of the written word. With selections from the pens of Donald Hall, Joyce Carol Oates, Calvin Trillin, Robert Pinsky, Jane Austen, Robertson Davies, Dorothy Parker, Rainer Maria Rilke, and Mary Gordon, to name just a few, and adorned with Bascove's gorgeous and inimitable paintings, this elegant book has something for anyone interested in the nature of writing and the pleasures of reading.

Stays By My Bedside 5 by .. Free Thought (WI, USA)
I keep this book handy for a quick read and the perusal of some wonderful art. It's colorful, restful, and thought-provoking. It keeps reaffirming for me that reading is definitely a passion to be pursued amid all the busy-ness and daily stresses. It's a terrific gift to give your book-lover friends and family!

Any booklover will love this 5 by .. Sergio (Texas)
It would be difficult for a book lover not to thoroughly enjoy this collection of writings about books. A great resource for thinking about books, reading and writing, for ideas about how to go about reading and writing, and for just finely crafted writing by lovers of books.

Bascove's art which adorns this collection creates a marvelously private, cozy, bookish world where voices seldom sound aloud, and the world outside is muted, allowing the reader or writer to be in the world on the printed page.

This book was made for literature lovers 5 by .. Reading my way thru life (VA)
This is a gorgeous book! It is filled with essays and poems and thoughts on reading, writing, and the love of books. The writings are from various authors some classic and well known and some I haven't heard of before. Some writings I liked a lot better than others. (-Regardless of the ones that didn't 'speak' to me, I still consider this a great collection of writings on the subjects I love.) The paintings are rich in color and detail and anyone who loves books/reading/writing will enjoy these highly eye appealing pictures that depict people with books! I'd love to have some of these to hang in my home!

This is a beautiful gift for yourself or someone you know who loves the literary world.

Buy it and enjoy!

Order Delivered as Described 5 by .. J. DeCroix ()
I am pleased with the handling of my order of "Where Books Fall Open". The book arrived in a timely manner and in good condition. I will always buy from Amazon.

prose, poetry and art about your favorite subject 4 by .. audrey (white mtns)
This anthology of prose and poetry starts out strong .... prose selections from Italo Calvino, Lynne Schwartz, Roy Blount and Anne Fadiman are wonderful, affectionate tributes to reading, Also, I think this is the first time Steve Martin and Jane Austen have appeared together, and both are fine. There are also a LOT of poems here, and some are better than others, as with all poetry. This is a mix of contemporary (Fran Lebowitz, Billy Collins) and classic (Cervantes, Elizabeth Barret Browning) selections that explore reading, writing and books. Artwork by Bascove is of a style consistent with the cover -- bold, colorful and primitive, sixteen paintings that also feature books. A percentage of the profits go to First Book, a literacy program for children.

I'd say the quality of the selections is uneven, but you will undoubtedly find something, and probably many things, that will please you. This is a small volume that can be read quickly, or savored, and as an object it is very pleasing. This would make a fine gift for a bibliophile you know.

A non-techno-babble book for working wth OpenOffice.0rg 5 by .. Rivers Books (Palmer, Alaska)
A great learning tool for the beginner and experienced users. Easy to understand, written from the non-technical standpoint

an Updated Read for The Experienced 5 by .. Eric V. Coleman (Houston, Texas)
I have been using OpenOffice.org for over a year now. After migrating from Lotus SmartSuite. There are a lot of features in OpenOffice that may not be in Microsoft Office or Corel WordPerfect.

The main reason is [in my opinion] being that OpenOffice is ported to four operating systems, i.e., Windows, Linux, Mac OS, and Solaris [UNIX]. It is translated into over forty languages, and is updated quarterly! It is sponsered by Sun MicroSystems and volunteer developers from all over the world. The program is written in Open document Format, not Windows programming language exclusively. What that means is that any one, any where in the world can use the program on almost any known operating system! I Love It. . .

It's a help! 4 by .. James G. Bennett Jr. (Clearwater, Florida USA)
I am switching over from MS Office to Open Office 3. I have a number of years experience with heavy duty office suites including Corel Perfect Office and Microsoft Office. And, I can say without reservation that Open Office 3 is an excellent package. This manual comes with the suite's download in Adobe Acrobat format. So, you may wonder why someone would pay for a printed version. The answer is simple, "convenience". It's easier to use a printed version than to keep jumping back and forth, and when you consider time and printing materials, certainly cheaper than printing it off for yourself. Do I recommend it? In a word, "yes".

My only knock on the book is that it is skimpy. The writers try to cover an awful lot of material and in so doing, they don't go into a huge amount of detail on any one thing. That means that they make assumptions about how much a reader already knows. For an experienced user, the book can be quite helpful, for a beginner just starting out on office suites, probably less so.

One problem the book doesn't address is the variation in terminology from suite to suite. For example in MS Office reader remarks are called "comments" whereas in Open Office, they are called "notes". Not knowing what something is called can make it hard to look up. Still, with the manual and some experimentation you should be up and running fairly quickly.

In this superb novel by the beloved author of Talk Before Sleep, The Pull of the Moon, and Until the Real Thing Comes Along, a woman re-creates her life after divorce by opening up her house and her heart.

Samantha's husband has left her, and after a spree of overcharging at Tiffany's, she settles down to reconstruct a life for herself and her eleven-year-old son. Her eccentric mother tries to help by fixing her up with dates, but a more pressing problem is money. To meet her mortgage payments, Sam decides to take in boarders. The first is an older woman who offers sage advice and sorely needed comfort; the second, a maladjusted student, is not quite so helpful. A new friend, King, an untraditional man, suggests that Samantha get out, get going, get work. But her real work is this: In order to emerge from grief and the past, she has to learn how to make her own happiness. In order to really see people, she has to look within her heart. And in order to know who she is, she has to remember—and reclaim—the person she used to be, long before she became someone else in an effort to save her marriage.

Open House is a love story about what can blossom between a man and a woman, and within a woman herself.

Moments of brilliance 4 by .. Karie Hoskins (Everett, WA USA)
I am going to open with "I really enjoyed this book." I haven't been reading as much lately (thanks a lot 2008 Election!) and now that I can rest easy and get back to my real life...this was a good book to start with.

"Open House" isn't a new story - it's the story of a woman, Sam, who is blindsided when her husband asks for a divorce, who finds herself at a crossroads in her life, who is unsure what to do next, and who discovers a new side of herself with the help of old and new friends.

The story has been told before, and will be told again...but there are moments in this book that really made it stand out. The author moves the story along well, and I enjoyed the characters (though they might be a bit stock...gay hairdresser, eccentric mother, husband who finds a new young girlfriend...), but it was the small moments of brilliance that made this book for me.

Some are just funny. After Sam's mother tries to mend her (then) teenager's broken heart with a pair of pedal pushers..."When we were roommates in college, Rita had once asked, extremely gently, if my mother was mentally retarded, "No", I said. "Just...Southern." That was the only explanation I could come up with at the time. And I still make do with it."

Some catch the reader off guard in the most honest of ways. "I wash up and go into my bedroom, intent on reading one of the new books I bought the other day. I turn back the bedclothes, and then, just like that, all the good feeling I've built up that day seems to drain out the soles of my feet. I stand there for a while. And then I get down on my knees, and whisper, Help me into my folded hands."

And "I don't hold Travis (her son) anymore, of course - not to read to him, or for any other reason, either. I wish I'd known that the last time was going to be the last time. But of course that information would have been as painful as this moment."

And "This is my new life: I push pain away all day, and the moment I put my arms down it walks into me and has a seat."

I like that Sam's journey takes a realistic path. Instead of a more traditional denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance...she experiences all of the feelings at different times. As above, she can have a great day and then have that wash away in a moment. She can be experiencing waves of sorrow or guilt and still take a small piece of beauty from a moment.

"I stare wearily at the kitchen table, at the swatch of sunlight that lies over the basket of paper napkins. The pattern on the napkins is illuminated; white-on-white roses. I never saw those roses before. I have lived my life blind."

And gradually, she takes all of these little moments, whether they come from inside or from someone else, and starts to rebuild. "Sometimes I want to say, "It's all right. You don't have to say that. I'm not so sad today." But I never do. Instead, I save his confidence in me as though his words were silver dollars, knotted in a silk scarf and kept hidden in a dresser drawer."

And although most of her emotions are focused on herself and her son...this emotional roller coaster does offer her views of those she loves that she never would have seen otherwise. Her eccentric mother? Turns out she is a woman who just like Sam, has experienced grief and pain, and who did the best she could for her children in the face of it.

"What occurs to me, now, is that what my mother had been doing all that time was weeping. With astonishing quiet. And that when she was done, she'd washed her face, fixed her hair, put on lipstick, and then gone out to the kitchen. She turned the radio on low and then made dinner so that it would be ready when it always was....But what did (she) Veronica do after she put us to bed? I wonder know. And I imagine a mother who took a mask off her face, then pushed hard into a pillow to weep for the loss of her husband, for the loss of the life she was supposed to have, for the only man she ever - I actually gasp, thinking this now - loved."

Disguised as a painful divorce, frustrating and sometimes seemingly impossible to unwrap, this time in Sam's life turns out to be an amazing and incredibly valuable gift.

After you get your teeth kicked in, then what? 5 by .. Deborah Crawford (Memphis, TN)
I loved this book. Maybe I identify with Sam a little too much, but I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have been able to relate quite so well if I hadn't been through a very similar break-up experience within the last year. Sure, she's crazy at first. I get that. It's hard to be rational and resilient and cool when the rug has been ripped out from under you and your entire life hurts.

But Sam, like most of us, picks herself up and rebuilds a life for herself and her son, even while aching for her husband David to return and unshatter her world. There are some scenes so funny and a few so sad and each time, I wanted to be there with Sam to laugh and to cry with her and refill the wine glasses or the cereal bowls.

Her friendship with the overweight, temp-job working King is rather refreshing, too. I love him even more than I do Samantha.

Berg does a great job with all the characters in this story, from Sam and David's son, Travis to the often annoying and best friend, Rita to Veronica, Sam's loving but pushy mother to Edward, the hilarious gay roommate who I wish had moved in much sooner!

This book is an easy, enjoyable, comfortable read. It's flannel pj's and red wine and an evening or two with a few new friends you hope can stay forever.

There are already so many wonderful reviews and descriptions of this book, so I won't ramble. Suffice it to say that this is one of the best books about going through a divorce that I've read. I love that it is so raw and real at times, but still offers hope and inspiration.

I kept waiting for this one to have a point. Didn't seem to find one. Do yourself a favor and save yourself the time.

I don't know if it was this author's style of writing or just the story line itself, but I really couldn't get into this book. It was an enjoyable read, but I prefer to read novels that are more than just enjoyable. I'd probably try this author at least one more time before deciding on whether I like her or not.
