Good Read, But... 4 by .. Rob B (Florida)
Ms. Harris' book is written in a more conversational style than your average technical read, but don't forget you will be tested on the official ISC2 materials. I recommend their book for studying and Ms. Harris' book as a supplement, not a substitute.

Now less than 12 hours away from taking the test, I found many of the post-chapter questions to be not well-formed, though much the same can be said about the ISC2 workbook. It is evident the human factors practioners (those who actually study how to write good questions) have not vetted these.

The CD that comes with Ms. Harris's book is somewhat better. By the way, the 4th Ed. cover has a blue field, not a red one.

Faster Than a Speeding Bullet 5 by .. C. Wallace (Minnesota USA)
Wonderfully quick response and shipping time. Nice to have a request for any comments.

Overly wordy novel on CISSP 3 by .. G. Miller (FT Bragg, NC (SOF))
This book is presented in novel format where huge paragraphs dominate.
People don't mentally store information in paragraph format; they store it in bullets or chunks of data so you first have to read the paragraph, then deduce the bullets for mental storage. It's weird but I think most books are written like this.

There are endless stories about security using sometimes inappropriate metaphors for security which don't always equate to the technology at hand.

Also, the chapters aren't laid out in the 10 Domains covered by the CISSP exam so you have to jump around to go through the domains.

By comparison, the Sybex CISSP book does a worse job because the chapters aren't even named in relation to what the ten CISSP domains are so you have to guess which chapter goes to which domain.

There is good use of graphics but there is a lot of extra information not on the exam so if you're looking for a concise technical review of CISSP exam material, look elsewhere.

PS the Shon Harris videos are as long and drawn out.

Wouldn't have passed without it! 5 by .. Andrew Hay (Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada)
I can honestly say that if it weren't for this book I probably would not have passed my CISSP exam. Unlike other prep-guides, Shon engages the reader and keeps their attention. Also, this book doesn't read like a "read this book and pass an exam" book. It reads like a security book which just so happens to teach you the contents of the CISSP CBK. Good work and congrats on the 4th edition.

A Good Baseline for Exam Review 4 by .. Curtis W. Diblin (Moreno Valley, CA United States)
I just passed the CISSP exam using, almost exclusively, the Shon Harris, 4th ed., 'All in ONE, CISSP Exam Guide' - supplementing Harris with some additional materials on networking and encryption. It took me about 7 weeks to study the materials before taking the exam despite a busy work schedule (my background is operations). The book is an excellent resource for most of the 10 knowledge domains with special mention to LAW, and Physical Security. However, the Networking and Encryption Domains were not nearly adequate - not enough information and presented at a level below that of the actual exam. Use the questions at the end of each chapter as review but be WARNED, most of the chapter review questions are much to simple. Seek out other text books for more representative exam questions(combining knowledge with logic and practical scenarios). Also, do not waste your time on the questions found on the CD - way, way to simple. I found the book a little verbose for my taste but the many tables, diagrams, summary areas, and the quite excellent Quick Tips section at the end of each chapter more than made up for this minor flaw.

Excellent! 5 by .. Albert E. Straniti (Connecticut)
This is the best book to use to study for the A+ exams. It even came with a CD containing practice tests. All this for 35 dollars is pretty darn good.

The Best A+ prep 5 by .. Todd L. Fortin (mountlake terrace, wa United States)
This was the first book I bought when I decided to pursue a tech career, and I couldn't have made a better choice. What sets this book apart from all the other A+ prep books I've seen is that it has Mike Meyers' unique voice all over it. He's a good writer, explains concepts clearly and in depth, and best of all does it with enthusiasm and humor. I would also recommend his Net+ book- more of the same.

A+ Certification is a very good study! 5 by .. R. Crespo (CA, USA)
A+ Certification is a very good study. It comes complete with readable text format. I'm still working towards the cert, however; with this studing is a breeze. I give this text three thumbs up.

Literally 'All In One' 5 by .. Michael Moore (MI USA)
Although before reading this book I had experience relavent to the exam, this book goes over tech specs relavent to the exam that you rarely see on the job (SCSI Termination, RAMBUS RAM, etc.). Some may argue that this sort of stuff is irrelavent, but if your out for knowledge and not just to pass the test then you will agree with me that this sort of book makes you an 'uber geek' when it comes to PC/Windows troubleshooting. In my opinion, this book is designed more for the Corporate IT environment, where Windows reigns supreme, doesnt touch on Linux or Mac Nearly as much, but does cover them. I am confident that someone haivng never opened a PC could pick up this book, armed with a copy of Windows 2000/XP, and an old 486 or better, could become A+ certified. NOTE: this version does not cover Vista, but having taken the exam March 2008 I can tell you Vista is not covered yet, and everything in the book is still very much important, and 90% ports over to Vista.

Great Study Guide 5 by .. Quacey A. Elias ()
I have been in IT for 10 years. We in the IT world tend to read into test questions too much. This book put everything into perspective regarding the level of answer that is required to do well on the test. This book has definitely assisted me to understand the new CompTIA A+ test, which helped me to pass with flying colors the Essentials and IT Technician tests. Thanks to this book I am now A+ certified. Like Mike Myers said in the book. Turn off the T.V. and study.

OK 2 by .. Arrow ()
There are not a lot of good books out there for this kind of thing. In that respect, there is a lot to learn out of this book for a newbie. But I have to say I have found more than a few inaccuracies in this book. You would think for an exam guide, they would get a few professionals to proofread it first - before publication.

Do not under any circumstances buy this book for CEDIA Installer Level I 1 by .. Jason Bellflowers (Valdosta, GA USA)
The CEDIA Installer Level I exam covers many topics, most of which are not covered in this material. On my exam there were seven (out of one hundred) questions on OSHA regulations regarding job site safety. This book merely mentions that OSHA is an agency... and that's it. The exam also had several questions on how to properly terminate cabling, a topic never even mentioned in the book material. It is obvious where the author's interests lie, as he expounds greatly on computer networking, but glosses over most of the other topics. Additionally if you're looking at purchasing this book as an "introduction" to home technology, you had better like powerline carrier technology, because that's all he covers. Ninety pages on lighting systems, and apparently only PLC technology exists. This material may be relevant for the HTI+ exam, but most of what is covered is not on the CEDIA Installer Level I test. Unless you plan on taking the HTI+ as well, this book would be a gross misuse of your valuable study time. Read the materials CEDIA recommends:

- The Audio Cyclopedia
- The Audio Dictionary
- Audio Systems Technology, Level 1 & 2
- The National Electric Code (NEC)
- Sound System Engineering, Second Edition
- TIA-570

I would also recommend familiarizing yourself greatly with OSHA guidelines for on-site safety and materials (wire, etc) handling.

Notice the list above doesn't have video distribution, lighting controls, automation products, or irrigation controls. Spend your time on audio distribution, cabling termination, TIA-570 and standards. You'll thank me.

As to this book? Cast it into the farthest reaches of a nuclear waste dump, because with editors and proofreaders this lax, you would be better off reading the Chronicals of Narnia to prepare yourself for CEDIA Installer Level I.

Don't buy as preparation for the CEDIA exam. 1 by .. C. Wells (Portland, OR)
This book is very misleading. First of all, as stated in the other reviews, there are an enormous amount of errors located in the book. I could see this backfiring on many people who are new to the information as the contradictions and misprints will leave a newbie wondering which idea is correct. I have taken the CEDIA exam and I can say that not a single question located anywhere in that book was on the exam. I think the book could be a good overview learning tool if they would have bothered to proof read it before going to print.

This book WILL NOT prepare you for the exam 1 by .. D. Martinson (Houston, Texas)
If I could, I'd give this a negative 5 stars. In no conceivable way will this book prepare you for the CEDIA Level 1 exam. You are much better off reading straight out of the NEC materials. The sample questions are puff balls compared to the real exam. How can publishers get away with putting out such garbage??? This book has more value as a presto log.

"Authorized" is misleading 1 by .. M. Williams (Wyoming, USA)
"Authorized" is misleading ---This book is an "authorized" training material, which signifies that it covers the content of the relevant certification exams. The accuracy and delivery of the content, however, have not necessarily been reviewed or approved by the certifying agencies.

A review of the Table of Contents (16 pages worth) leads one to believe this book (800+ pages worth) will cover it all and with great detail. From there to Chapter 4 (where I decided the book wasn't worth completing), it was mostly downhill. Here are some examples of what I found:

- terms not introduced or not introduced at the first use, and/or not identified in the glossary
- layout and delivery of information difficult to follow, repetitious of some information, while not including other pertinent information
- errors (bandwidth of Cat 5e cable listed at 200 Mbps (Table 1-5, pg 11) and at 100 Mbps (Table 4-2, pg 101))
- errors (pg 24: Chapter 1 test question # 4 directs to Table 1-2 rather than Table 1-3 to reference for answering)
- why?! (includes text, tables and figures with details on voltage/plugs/etc. used by other countries, yet is incomplete on the products used in the US)
- errors (pp 83-84: identifies the "minimum" bend radius for Cat5 to be 1 inch, while Figure 3-7 depicts the diameter)
- errors (pg 85: last paragraph refers to Figures 3-11 and 3-12, rather than Figures 3-9 and 3-10)
- errors (pg 93: Answer #1 is identified as "C, User Training Guide", but the answer text expands on "D, Wire Chart".

I highly recommend persons desiring the CompTIA HTI+ and/or CEDIA Installer I certifications, as well as those wishing to simply increase their knowledge base, look elsewhere for study materials.

Some of the information provided in this book may truly be of value (i.e. accurate and complete), however, with all the errors I've found, I am unable to rely on this book as a good resource.

A little old book, but it works pretty well 4 by .. Wiver (San Jose, Costa Rica)
This is a rather old book, but it does have a lot of niec and interesting content.

Check Out - www.totalsem.com/support/errata/aplus5.htm 3 by .. ()
Before purchasing the book you should access www.totalsem.com/support/errata/aplus5.htm
This webpage show errors and give the corrections for errors in the Fifth Edition of the All In One A+ Certification Book.

Wait For Next Edition 5 by .. ()
CompTIA is updating the test the end of November. So in one month this book becomes obsolete. Keep an eye out for the updated edition that should be published shortly.

All of that aside this is a great book. Beginning with historical back ground then bringing the reader "up to date" helps make these ideas stick. After each chapter there are sample questions that insure you are truly getting it.

Add to that the bonus CD with practice tests and useful utilities that you, as an official CompTIA certified technician, might actually use in the field and you got a no brainer.

Five stars!

Fourth Edition; Good but could be better 4 by .. Harold Woodward (Seaside, CA USA)
The version I have is the fourth edition copyright 2002. I have been working with/on PC's since 1986.

Overall I found this a good preparatory book for the exams. I especially liked the historical perspective Michael Meyers gives at the beginning of many chapters. I did find an occasional mistake in these, but nothing major. I feel the explanations throughout the entire book are simplified enough that someone with little to no experience after studying the book could probably pass the two exams. I expect the sheer size of the book; 1137 pages, 2 1/2 inches thick may discourage some beginners.

I feel at times the author went overboard with his analogies, especially with the ones related to how a CPU works. He does this so much that I could not find a clear definition of the function of the external data bus, in the external data bus section. It was clouded by his analogy. Instead I found it in the questions at the end of the chapter.

I feel in some places the proofreader(s) for the 2002 edition left some things the way they were in previous editions, when they should have been updated for the current technology and prices. A few examples; p 245 "Document the position of the wires for the ...turbo switch, turbo light..." and p 377 "Buying floppy drives one at a time is expensive and a waste of time." (since 2000 I have been buying new floppy drives for $10-$15 individually. I don't consider that expensive.) and lastly p826 "A CDR burner must be specifically designed to support the longer 80-minute CD-R format, something that currently only a minority of CD-R drives do." The author needs to be carefull of using the phrase "all versions of windows". NT does not have Device Manager or a Safe Mode, but "all versions of windows" on page 598 and 546 would leed you to believe so.

I think for the sake of beginners I would have preferred that all of the images of the Celeron SEP package show the side with the actual CPU chip on it. Many show the backside with the circuit traces.

This book did save me money. In the front it suggests to buy vouchers, vice paying the full cost for the exams. I bought vouchers, along with an enhanced version of the practice examinations and still paid less than the retail cost of the exams.

Dispite my criticism of this book I did like the book and I plan on keeping it for a long time to come as reference material. There is no way I could ever have written a book, this in depth, with as few errors as this book has. I passed the hardware exam easily (I took 6 minutes for the adaptive version) and expect to easily pass the operating system exam tomorrow. I only used my experience, this book and an enhanced version of the practice examinations that came with the book.

A new version of the A Plus exam is due fall or winter of 2003. Comptia has already published the new exam objectives, so I would expect a fifth edition of this book early 2004.

Bravo. The best A+ guide. 5 by .. Sandra Isaacs (Oak Park, IL USA)
This All-In-One book has cartoonish pictures and explains basic computer techie stuff. I did extremely well on both exams. I do have a couple years of hands on experience, but I have a habit of buying books and not reading them. However, this book I read cover-to-cover. It may be a bit of overkill in terms of theory for the test. However, I'm a better tech because of doing the exercises. Especially, the ones in the lab manual. For daily reference, I use Upgrading and Reparing PCs.

Definitely a worthwhile read!! 5 by .. Kevin J. Lang (Boston, MA)
I just took the test yesterday and passed, first try. This book is well constructed in terms of keeping the user interested. Without saying technology has it's fun, sexy areas and the grueling, mind numbing areas that will bore you to tears no matter how much you love computers - this book balanced that out nicely so that you are not reading 400 pages of sure-fire insomnia cure. Likewise, with the accuracy - I have been working as an admin for a few years now and what I did know matched Mike's knowledge almost perfectly. All in all it is definitely worth your time whether or not you decide to take the test. However, it is sad this book will be out dated after the first quarter of 2005. (The new test comes out.) However, I would definitely buy another book buy Mike Meyers; I have no doubt that the 3rd edition will be just as good.

Out of Date 2 by .. Kevin Stenger ()
I am very disappointed in this book. I used the A+ book to study for and pass the exam but the Network+ book was a grave disappointment.

The difference in the material on the test and what is stressed in the book and on the practice questions makes me believe that this book was written for an older exam. Even the format of the questions differed from the ones in the practice exam.

I bought the book on the basis of my experience with the A+ book and cannot recommend it for the Network+ exam.

A well written, effective study guide. 5 by .. Kristian Brekke (Madison, WI)
Thank you, Mike! I just passed my Network+ exam with 860 out of 900, using this guide as my primary study source. I also bought his 600 practice questions bundled with a Prometric exam voucher for $157 from his website, www.totalsem.com. The practice tests were quite close to the actual exam. I recommend following up with the Network+ certification soon after completing the A+ certification because there is a large overlap in material. Together these certifications can be used to cover the elective exam requirement for Microsoft's MCSA certification.

Finally a great certification book! 5 by .. Richard D. Lyons (Chicago, IL United States)
If you have read by past reviews of IT books you know that I'm pretty unforgiving toward sub-par certification books.

Thankfully, Mike Meyers, "Network+ Certification All-In-One Exam Guide" is a glowing example of how lots of experience, great writing and skillful editing can unite to form a beautiful book. This is rare in the days of, "can't wait to get it to press (profit)" publishing.

Meyers writes VERY clearly, gives detailed examples, plenty of illustrations (which really helps me to remember) and terrific, easy-to-understand analogies. It is actually a joy to read!

I haven't taken any practice tests yet, so I'm unsure how well Meyer's focus and depth are appropriate for the exam. However, it seems to me that Meyer's differs from other authors in that he provides a lot of detail, but then explains the details in such a way to make them understandable and thus EASY to remember! I really quite amazed because I haven't yet found an author who is as capable of doing this.

Meyer's tone is perfectly balanced between the two extremes of being too dry and too humorous. I can take the dry humorless tone of some authors but the intrusive- often stupid- humor of other authors have lead me to sometimes return books the same day I've purchased them. In short, I find Meyer's tone unobtrusive and actually refreshing- and I tend to be very picky about such things.

Great job Mike!

Update July 11, 2004:

Ok, I've taken my Network+ exam and passed (846 out of 900). Meyers book was not the only preparation material I used though. The Exam Cram 2 Network+ review book is excellent. It goes into more detail than Meyer's book, but you really need to first read Meyer's book to understand the Exam Cram 2 fully. In addition, I used the Transcender practice exams which were right on the money- very similar to the actual exam. I also tried the 2nd Boson practice exam which was only ok. The practice exams in Meyer's book were much easier than the actual Network+ exam but is a good review before tackling the tougher Transcender exams. Best of luck to you!

Not bad..but use a good exam practice cd 3 by .. ()
Mike Meyers is funny in his computer humor (probably meant for true computer geeks). He really needs to focus more on the facts of the exam instead of attempting to be the other Mike Meyers...which he isn't. I like the book it was really easy to read and he made a point to specify what pertained to the exam. I passed the exam on 4/16/2004 with a 740. I have to admit I used the transcender simulated exam test and it was fairly close. I think in the end that you need to know the OSI layers inside and out and focus on the ridiculous memorization of the PORTS for ftp, smtp...etc to pass. But if you read this and do some exam prep it should be a breeze. keep up the good work Mike.

A Certification Star! 4 by .. J. Shumaker (Myrtle Beach, SC)
After having completed Microsoft's MCAD certification, I am using this text along with the Tom Carpenter text to prepare for MCTS and MCITP certification. Though I haven't taken the exam yet, the material appears to be covered in a thorough and in-depth fashion. Yet, it does not get bogged down in unnecessary detail.

Excellent book!

All you need to pass the MCITP Database Developer 5 by .. T. Rodgers ()
Well written and in depth, this book should cover everything necessary to pass these tests.

I have two complaints:

1) The book is laid out functionally for SQL Server, not for each test. So, for example, when you are studying for the 70-442, it may involve a portion of chapter 3, 4, 5, and 8, but all of 12 and 13. All this information is entwined with the stuff for the other tests.

2) You choose to only take one of the tests on the CD. For example - you couldn't say just test for the 70-441 test. I found the CD questions less useful than books dedicated to one test because of this.

These are minor complaints though, and I'm not really sure the issues can be avoided to begin with. Don't let them stop you from using this as your resource to pass these three tests.

Passed all 3 exams 5 by .. Mike (New York, NY United States)
For the 431 exam, I used the (Tom) Carpenter book as my primary study guide and this book as a side reference. My main reason for purchasing this book is for the next two exams (441,442). After taking the 431 test and looking up some questions I guessed at in this book, I regret not using this book as my primary study guide. This book seems to point out the exact information needed to get through the test. I look forward to using it for the next two exams. Note that the author of this book is the technical editor for the Carpenter book.

Update to previous review:
I just passed both exams (441 & 442) without difficulty and with plenty of time remaining (each exam took about 2 hours). This is definitely the book to use for these exams. The topics and sample questions are on target with the actual test. Be sure to review the topic list for each exam in the front of the book before taking the test. The 'what you need to know' section at the end of each chapter is not always accurate. Also - the explanation of cascade deletes is incorrect in the book.

Just what I needed 5 by .. Mike Berry (Georgia)
The end-of-chapter exam questions were perfect for helping me know what I know and what I don't know. I already passed the 70-431 and 70-441 exams and the questions I looked at in the back of the chapters hit the knowledge needed to pass these exams.

Unfortunately I failed the 70-442 exam before this book was released. However, after reviewing the end-of-chapter exam questions, I saw exactly what I needed to brush up on. I spent several days in a marathon study session doing the exam questions in the back of each chapter for the 70-442. For anything I missed, I studied the material in the chapter. In addition to learning what I needed for the exam, I also learned a couple things I didn't know about in SQL Server 2005. I then took and passed the 70-442.

This book was just what I needed. I only wish I had it before I took the 70-442 the first time.

Must read if ... 4 by .. Jos Pols ()
Nutshell review - If you are only going to read one book in preparation for the CISSP exam then you must read this one. It is extensive and covers all the bases.

Tough to get through, but worth it! 5 by .. Anthony Fowlie (Austin, TX)
I recently received word from ISC2 that I passed the CISSP exam. I'll be the first to admit that I test very well (used 2.25 of the 6 hours for the test), but I have to give credit to Shon Harris for this excellent book which helped me bring together all the information needed for this exam.

It's definitely true to read people describe the exam as a "mile wide and inch deep", so it shouldn't come as any great surprise to find this book is huge (~1,000 pages), and while it is technical in some areas, it is only superficially so. All the topics are covered at about the right depth to be aligned well with the exam.

My only quibbles are very minor, such as the by-lines at the beginnings of sections that started out cute, but became very irritating as they devolved into a sarcastic tone, and a lack of organization to the quick round-up of the concepts at the end of each chapter. Otherwise, this book is the entirity of the knowledge you will need to pass, but memorizing everything in the book isn't going to cut it - you will need a modicum of real-world experience to allow you to lay all this information out in a framework that meshes with how things actually work in the world.

Buy this book, read it thoroughly, apply a liberal amount of common sense, then pass the test.

Really is "All-In-One", but you can't be an imbecile 5 by .. Kristian Erik Hermansen (San Francisco, CA USA)
I am a 25 year old infosec dude and found this book to be the only one necessary. I did practice exams online after reading through the ~1000 pages Shon Harris has put together. It reads well, and is not entirely boring. I think that anyone can pass the exam with just this book, but you can't be an imbecile. I have written exploit code before, researched vulnerabilities, and have been messing around with hacking since the 90's when I was in high school. So, many of the technical stuff I knew very well. With the CISSP, you also need to understand the non-technical side of things. Learning the other domains can be challenging. In the end, when taking the test, you learn to identify what they examiners are looking for. You may be yelling and screaming in your head during the exam that this question is ridiculous, and you would be right. You have to step back and pretend you are in high school again to answer the questions correctly. If you see the word "management", then you should always check that box. The are the tips I can pass on to would-be CISSP seekers. Good luck :-)

The Bible of CISSP material 4 by .. Spawn ()
Simply put this book is the Bible of CISSP study material, if you read this book and understand the material and can apply it you will be in great shape for the CISSP exam.

Downside? The sheer size of this book can be intimidating

All-in-one as a study guide 4 by .. Jeffrey T. Agers (Houston, Texas)
I just received an e-mail confirming I passed the test and I can say that this book is a really good overall reference. It has very good coverage of all the core domains that the CISSP exam covers and was practically my only study tool - definitely my only study book. I used the free exam questions at cccure.org (great reference) as well as some quick guides from that site (that are pretty much built off of the all-in-one and a couple of other books to provide quick reference).

I highly recommend this book (or the 4th edition which has just come out) to anyone considering taking the exam. While the exam is difficult, mastery of the subject matter is definitely possible with this guide and a bit of experience. The exam is very much concept-based, and by that I mean that you need to understand the concepts behind the core domains as oppsoed to just memorizing everything. Memorization is useful (and necessary) in a number of areas, but if you memorize without understanding the concepts there are plenty of questions that you can miss on the test. The exam really does a pretty good job of trying to draw on how well you understand the material. There are a number of people out there that state that the jokes or no good or there are gaps. First, it's not a comedy book. The style is meant to put the reader at ease so that the material can be more easily absorbed. Second, there are going to be gaps with any book because the exam is not written off of one. Plus, I tried reading the "official guide" a long time back. Dry, dry, dry, dry, dry. I couldn't force myself past 175 pages. And finally, there are a number of books that go into an absurd amount of detail. I think it's easy to get lost in that stuff. This one has good coverage without getting you lost in the weeds for an exam where that really isn't necessary. Overall I probably studied about 170 to 200 hours over a period of 3 to 4 months (but not every single day). Give yourself plenty of time to read and understand.

Also, the CD questions are a good way to test your comprehension. Use it. The end of the chapter questions are ok, but you should DEFINITELY use cccure.org to get a feel for how difficult questions will actually be and how they are worded on the test.

To anyone going for it I say good luck. It's not an easy test to take. As a frame of reference, I was able to complete it in about 4 hours - being really careful to read the questions well and also going back over the ones that I wasn't so sure about. It's grueling, but very doable.

Hope this helps.

Abysmal 1 by .. Joseph P. Indelicato (Rochester NY)
I've gotten through the first chapter, and I am so distracted by the errors that it's going back. Read the other comments. Answers are wrong, errors are throughout the text. A complete waste. Get another book

Does not prepare you for the exam 1 by .. A. Mirwani ()
I was hoping this book would help prepare me for exam 70-293 but it certainly did not deliver. The material was very general and did not go into nearly enough detail to prepare you for the exam, not to mention pieces of it are incorrect! If you are going to use this book make sure to use supplemental materials as well. In fact, don't use this book at all since it's just a waste of time. I don't know how this book was ever published since it's so off the mark...

House of Cards 1 by .. ()
This text proves that on the internet or in print, a person or persons can create a completely fictional persona and "resume" of qualifications. I recommend searching further for a text with more experienced, polished, knowledgeable authors.

Concise but riddled with errors - and omissions 3 by .. Kenneth J Marsh (Seattle, WA USA)
I'm halfway through this book and have recorded a total of 10 typos and a dozen flat-out errors. A typo is relatively harmless, but errors include things like saying the correct answer was "C" when in fact it was "B" or visa-versa (answers 4 & 5 on page 355), asking a question like number 7 on page 63 when the material is not covered until page 226, displaying a dialog showing a configuration that allows all IP addresses except 1, but claims to deny all except 1 (page 250), or just flat-out misinforming the reader, such as by saying things like a subnet of 255.255.254.0 can be expressed in CIDR notation as /21 (page 334) or that a misconfigured subnet mask will always result in NO other machines being reachable (page 497).

Even the practice exam I took says that granting Change permissions to an NTFS folder is a correct answer. We all know that NTFS folders do not have a Change permission, only shares do.

The book leaves you wondering what is true and what is false, although it is at least 90% true, so I guess I can expect to get at least a 90% on the exam, right?

Overall, it reads well, doesn't beat around the bush too much, and is not a terrible choice of study material, but very sloppily edited.

As a follow up: I understood all of the material in the book well and did well on the practice exams, but barely passed 70-290 and got a 693 on 70-291 (need 700 to pass). Passing the NT 4.0 MCSE or Win 2000 MCP using Exam Cram was a breeze by comparison. This book just doesn't cut it.

Good for a review~! 3 by .. Derek L. Traywick (Ramstein, Germany)
This book is not for anyone who is new to IT. If you don't have experience in security and networking then I would say you should say with the sybex book CompTIA Security+ Study Guide: Exam SY0-101. This book is awesome as a reference but only use this to study if you have been in the field for years. I would not recommend this to new SecAdmin/NetAdmins.

Great reference book ... although needs a new edition 4 by .. Gabriel E. Borlean (San Jose - Capital of Silicon Valley, California USA)
INTRO:
I passed the Security+ exam scoring 825 (March 2008) and qualifying for my first CompTIA certification. I bought this book back in 2003, and read it from cover to cover, but only now have I decided to take the exam. This is a well respected introductory/fundamentals to IT Security (InfoSec) certification AND one of the most difficult from CompTIA to pass (highest percentage - 85% - 764 out of 900 total points). It is well-worth it for anyone working in the IT industry.

CONTENT:
The strengths of this book is its author's easy to understand explanations of material. This book is my no means comprehensive, and in some areas it is lacking.

Also, there is word that CompTIA will update the Security+ objectives in the Fall of 2008. This book was published way before the current exam objectives of

EXAM:
The current exam code is SY0 - 101 and the last time the exam objectives were updated were in 2007. There is talk that CompTIA is planning on upgrading the objectives and pool of questions in the Fall of 2008.

For passing the exam, I would recommend the following:
* print out the Exam Objectives (thus guaranteeing you are going to study all the material covered on the new exam).
* use at least two (2) study materials (Sybex, All-In-One) and exam-questions prep book (ExamCram).
* participate in online-forums (such as techexams dot net) and use their resources.

CONCLUSION:
If you plan on passing the CompTIA Security+ exam, this book alone will not be enough. While it covers the subject matter well, it is not comprehensive and would need to be updated to the 2008 exam objectives level.

Some chapters are good but lots of errors in others 2 by .. Justin Playfair ()
I hesitated to review this book simply because the quality of the chapters varies so much -- some are well-written and accurate, but others are very poor, at least in the category of accuracy. Then there are the minor annoyances, like the answers to the questions at the end of chapter 3, which I'll explain first and then describe some accuracy issues.

At the end of every chapter is a set of multiple-choice questions related to the material covered in the chapter, and as is typically the case with multiple choice, there's exactly one correct answer -- except for chapter 3. In other words, in 18 of the book's 19 chapters, you'd be wrong to select more than one answer, but chapter 3 has questions for which you're supposed to select more than one answer -- only they don't tell you that anywhere.

Regarding the accuracy problems, the best example I can recall offhand would be chapter 5 ("Web Components") which, among other things, informs us that:

1. Tim Berners-Lee's creation of the technology behind the Web "led to network after network being connected together" to form what is "known today as the Internet" (Nope -- the existence of the Internet led to Berners-Lee's creation of the Web, not the other way around)
2. Java's "platform independence never fully materialized", it's "still plagued by poor performance", and that "Security was one of the touted advantages of Java, but in reality, security is not a built-in function but an afterthought and is implemented independent of the language core." (The writer is either completely ignorant of or hostile towards Java -- or both)

I'd expect occasional errors in any book, particularly a technical one of this size, but the frequency with which I've found them makes me wonder how many new things I "learned" from the book are wrong, which makes it worse than useless in a way.

I can't recommend another book on the Security+ certification because I haven't yet read another one, but I can say with a reasonable degree of confidence that there probably ARE better ones out there.

Security+ Books 4 by .. dexteroc (orange county, ca)
Whenever I'm looking for a book review, I'm most interested in what people used to study and pass the test. I passed the Security+ test last weekend with an 814. I used this book by Dr. White, the ExamCram2 book and the ExamCram2 Practice Questions book. The test was not too difficult like say the CCNA but it was the hardest Comptia test out of the A+, Network+ and Security+ but it is probably the most valuable certification out of those three.

Dr. White's book was thorough and it was not a boring read in my opinion. I'm not sure I would have passed if this was the only material I had however, I looked at many books and this one was the best on the market. The ExamCram Practice Question book came with 768 test questions from measureUP and I went through all of them. On the test I had many questions on Access Control (RBAC, MAC, Discretionary, etc) so know that stuff like the back of your hand. I spent about 4 weeks studying for the test using Dr. White's book, the ExamCram2 books and as many practice questions as I could find on the Internet. Good Luck.

Not really all-in-one 3 by .. Andrew Rinaldo ()
In my opinion this book is pretty good for study material, but the things it lacks are more in-depth thinking questions for every chapter.

I am not sure about the writing style. This book does have formal way of writing to present the materials but it sometime overlaps with previous chapters which made me feel boring. I prefer an easier to understand writing style instead of formal.

If this book is arranged and written according to compTIA objectives just like sybex does with its books, I think this will make the reader easier to navigate the area that they want to focus more.

This book covers cryptography in great details which is good, even though not all of them will be examined, such as the way how the algorithm is written and the formula.

As for other things, this book is good enough, worth reading but to really pass security+ exam, other books are recommended in combination with this book. I passed the exam with the help of this book along with sybex Fast Pass and got the measureup from newhorizon which is a training center that I used.
