Pretty Good Introduction 4 by .. D. Comer (Albuquerque, NM)
I found this book to be a great refresher. That is, having written Java in the past, writing mainly C# in the last 8 years, I needed to update my knowledge of Java since Java 1.2. The authors(s) do a good job of keeping the material from becoming too dry. Many programming books start with too much theory before diving into practical code. This book starts with a quick tutorial on two programming tools, TextPad and Eclipse, and does a good job explaining enough of both tools to get you started. The reason for two tools is that if you are new to a complex IDE environment, the author(s) introduce a text centric tool (TextPad) and a more advanced GUI based tool (Eclipse).

As one reviewer noted, it is best to think of this book as one, larger book (paraphrasing). The author states that the book is not intended to be read cover-to-cover yet I found reading cover-to-cover was better for me. The material starts with the simple, "Hello World" style examples covering editing, compiling, and running code. Simple examples are interspersed with Java requirements for file naming, class structure, running examples, data types, if-then-else, loops, switch, exceptions and other introductory concepts.. Following books/chapters cover object oriented programming, more formal class structure, subclasses, inheritance, interfaces, inner classes, packaging ad documenting classes, String, Array, and collections, thread programming, network programming, regular expressions, recursion Swing (Java's GUI API), We programming files and databases, XML operations, and applications with drawing and animation.

Jammed packed as this book is with nearly all basic concepts a beginning to intermediate Java programmer needs to know, the material is intended to get you started and only scratches the surface of what a professional Java programmer will acquire with time. In my opinion, there is a good balance of material with a decent writing style. I knocked one star off the review, however, because there are some rather obvious blunders in the book. To my knowledge, there are no errata posted for the book, so it may take you about one star's worth of head scratching to get around those blunders. Fortunately, this is the exception (no pun intended) and not the rule.

BrainSponge 5 by .. Stephen Britt ()
This book is "very" helpful. I am preparing for my masters in IT and it has helped me to prepare for some of the more challenging Java programs.

Horrible 1 by .. Josten D. Moore (Detroit, MI USA)
9 books in 1... All it really is is the good books that you should have stripped and thrown into one book and haphazardly executed. This book was an utter waste of $30 I spent on it. I do not recommend this book at all you won't really learn anything out of it. If you really want to learn Java go pick up the "Think In Java 4/e" by Bruce Eckel. I'll state it again this book is poorly executed and DEFINITELY is NOT made for a reference...

Buy it, Buy it, Buy it 5 by .. Joe Johnson (Nation of Joe)
By far the best intro to Java I have ever encountered, detailed explanations of java programming concepts, followed by example code. Written in the tongue-in-cheek humor typical of Dummies books, even after becoming a highly experienced java programmer, you'll always keep this book within an arm's length of your computer.

don't waste your time 1 by .. Krystina A. Patch (florida)
when i took c programming, i tried the all in one desk reference for c. it was a godsend. so when i took java a semester later, i eagerly bought this book hoping it would work the same miracles. it did not. it doesn't focus so much on the OOP aspects of java, and frankly is very confusing. i was quite dissapointed.

i tried two other java books after that, and finally got it right on the second try. 'head first java' is the holy grail of java books. don't waste your time, or money.. just get 'head first java' and thank me later :)

Digital Photography for Dummies 8 Books in 1 5 by .. Eddie G. Daniels (Havelock, NC USA)
This book is great. All I expected and more. Price was more than reasonable.

wealth of photography information 4 by .. Bill Coleman ()
This is a very thick book. But it is a wealth of information on digital photography. You can use it as a reference or read the entire book. Most books you get on photography are outdated, and have not got much information on Digital Photography. this an up to date one.

Disappointing 1 by .. Michael J. Snyder (San Antonio, Texas)
I found this book particularly annoying in part because it continually suggests the reader can learn MORE about a given topic of interest by buying another book by the author. It blows off Mac and I found it a waste of money.

"Aim" is off 3 by .. Allan B. Stevenson (fairfield, CA)
The book is filled with info, but it "focuses" on the digital SLR, rather than the point and shoot. There should have been a warning in the description. It's still useful.

Digital Photography for Dummies 5 by .. Beverly Bechtel ()
This book is huge and covers most anything one can think of on this topic. I bought it for my husband who has recently acquired a digital camera. He hasn't begun to even scratch the surface but has already found it helpful and knows it will as he tries new things.

Not Just for Dummies! 5 by .. J. R. Donaldson (Anchorage, AK)
PRO: quick referencing at your fingertips, tangible, no electricity required! thorough table of contents and index.

CON: it's heavy, the title is embarrassing,

Despite the title of this book, the `Dummies' part, it is an extremely useful reference book for long-term users of Apple computers as well as the newbie and / or PC converts. This reverence book takes the reader through the Mac basics it a very friendly, readable way. I've been working with Macs for 20 years, since the early 80s when they were first made available and I thought I knew my Apple product. But we must remember that the geniuses as Apple continue to tinker with and improve upon the software of the product as well as the hardware. Therefore, there are always new things to learn, new short cuts, new tips, etc. The world of Apple computing is as organic as an organization and it's products can get.

Apple niche is the ease at which these computers handle the media world. So one big advantage this reference book has over others; ie, Using Mac OS X Leopard.doc, is that it also covers the use of the basic applications that come as standard with every Apple computer. The publishers actually claim that there are 7 mini-books within this one reference that cover Mac basics; working with photos, movies, and music; using the Internet; working with iLife and iWork applications; various other Mac programs; time-saving tips; and networking.

Oh my gosh, if you have the time and the inclination, the detail in which this book goes into telling the reader the pros and cons of one of these basic applications, just when, where and the how of using them as well is a breath of fresh air. I have learned more tidbits just thumbing through the pages. It's not only amazing, it's fun; it's refreshing; and it is addictive. Actually knowing the ins, outs and short cuts is what turns an interested buyer of an Apple computer into an enthusiastic fanatics. And believe me, Mac addicts are known for their devotion to the machine. It's the programmers who keep us hooked!

To be able to take advantage of all the bells and whistles for which Apple computers have become known, you need to know them. This reference book also works as a guide for these, offering useful "Tip" on just about every page. You will find this book is not only well written but also well illustrated.

The purpose of a reference book is to have it readily available when that one question arises for which a physical book is invaluable, especially if that question covers something to do with your inoperable computer! I know that I refer to this book fairly consistently and certainly over and over again and again.

    Customer reviews

Very thorough! 5 by .. Christine Hall ()
I had tried Linux previously and found the online assistance that I could find to be limited and like "finding a needle in a haystack". There are so many distributions of Linux available! Having a handy reference that is comprehensive in nature and specifically addresses the questions I had, made upgrading and tossing my Microsoft monster easy.

Now that I have been using my copy for a while, I even found the courage to upgrade my system from the core model available with this text to a newer version of Fedora. The transition was smooth and easy. Many of the questions I had about the basic operation of Fedora (provided with the book) were still applicable.

If you want to upgrade to Linux and are afraid to jump into it wholeheartedly, this Dummies guide makes it very easy to get your feet wet before committing to the swim!

Give it a Look. 4 by .. Rande D. Schulze (Somewhere... in Idaho.)
I'm a Noob when it comes to code and config issues.
I'm currently using this as a companion for "Beginning Ubuntu Linux".
I havn't had much chance to make use of some of the more advanced sections, like programming. No book can cover 100% of every issue. "Linux for Dummies" comes darn close. Plus these folk do so in a "Soldier-Proof" format to keep you from being your own worst Complication.

This is a GREAT start for linux newbies 5 by .. J Ken Kuzenski (Raleigh, NC USA)
I needed to learn the basics of Linux quickly. Bought this book (at a local store, didn't have time to order from Amazon), and had Linux installed and running VERY quickly. I've only scratched the surface of the book, but so far it's done a great job of telling me everything I needed to know and answering all my questions, quickly and easily. The DVD is exceedingly simple to use, and contains more than "all you'll need"--tons of material. You can install a number of different Linux distributions from the DVD (I like Fedora), and installing Fedora on an unformatted hard drive (my desktop PC) AND installing Fedora in a dual-boot setup on a WinXP machine (my laptop) was easy. Naba's book and DVD are a fantastic introduction to Linux.

First-class starter for Linux newbies 5 by .. Lawrence (Tokyo, Japan)
Clear and well-organised dissection of Linux in its various flavours. Although it leans to GUI usage more than many Linux books, it does not shy away from the command-line approach, which it does in an entirely unintimidating way - in fact, it made it quite enjoyabe.

Included is a CD with several Linux 'distros' and tools, which is all you need to get up-and-running with Linux. A true time-saver for the uninitiated wishing to evaluate the remarkable potential of Linux.

Rating skewed by author writing own review 1 by .. D. Sharp (East Hartford, CT United States)
I have to doubt the integrity of the author and the rating system when the author wrote his/her own review of the book here. Amazon should remove it, customers using the book are the ones that should be writing reviews, not the author!

Ok for Beginners 2 by .. Tracy L. Needham (Raleigh, NC)
I actually returned this book, which I don't do often. I was hoping it would be more like Office 2003 Timesaving Techniques for Dummies, which doesn't seem to have a 2007 version yet, but was very basic. And it doesn't address Business Contact Manager at All.

Granted, it's trying to cover a lot of ground in one book. But if you're pretty proficient with Office programs, you may not learn much. It would have been more useful if it at least had a section that discusses all the changes between the 2 versions.

    Office 2007 8 in 1 4 by .. Christopher K. Boggs (Texas)
As all the Dummy books it is well written, supplies a large amount of infromation in a simple no nonsense form.

office 2007 for dummies 1 by .. Cheryl Ingram (LA)
The product has very basic information. I purchased the book to find out how to do many things within Office Outlook and the information was simply not there. I was looking to learn how to manage and update my "Archive Folder" it didn't have the information available. Disappointing based upon the cost.

Excellent Beginner Book 4 by .. A. Decker (Vancouver, Washington United States)
Readable, useful, humorous. I knew Word and Excel 2003 and needed to upgrade those to 2007 and learn Access and Outlook from start. This book would get you from no knowledge to being able to use the four programs I read about. It doesn't cover advanced topics - how to duplicate Access entries and make changes in the duplicate, for example - but you'll be ready to understand a more advanced guide.

Plenty of Photoshop CS3 books on the market update information to this latest Photoshop release, but few offer an extensive desk reference packing in the latest tools and techniques of the latest program with easy details on how to do everything from simple adjustments such as specifying size to using layering and blending modes for advanced compositions and refinement. From full color screen shots and color examples of modified photos to techniques and strategies, Photoshop CS3 All-in-One Desk Reference for Dummies is one of the most extensive coverages on the market - and a perfect pick for any who find detailed Photoshop coverages confusing.

This is useful in that it explains alot of online jargon, but as a required reading assignment, it didn't peak my interest.

Even experienced sellers will learn something 5 by .. Wildman Keith ()
I have bought and sold stuff online for years and this book still had useful information in it. It gives useful, specific sources for many different categories of eCommerce.
I have paid much more for courses and books from so called marketing experts that didn't have near as much information.
So often you will read or hear that you need to do this or that, but they never tell you the specific places that you can go to get it done.
The many different categories of selling advice would at first make you think that it just glosses over them but once you start to read you see that they are one of the strengths of this book... you just keep finding good advice to tweak and improve your online business.
From web site design and boosting traffic to credit card acceptance to keeping your customers happy or even legal advice for people just starting out, it's hard to name just one part that would be considered the best part of this book. Site security to even the basics of chosing a business name are covered.
It doesn't matter if you are only thinking about starting an online business or if you have various web sites and are an experienced eBay user, there will be something in here that will make you glad you bought it.

Excellent- From Basic info to More Advanced all in One! 5 by .. Martin (Wallingford CT)
This book was a real surprise. I fully expected to use it as a resource for new Ebay/Web commerce users that we help teach but found it excelled not only in the basics but in pretty much the whole plan of where you would want to be online in the long run. I am particulary fond of books that discuss legal and accounting set up and this one covers a lot of good info like type of organization, record keeping, copyrights and trademarks, a tax overview etc. A great foundation for the new online business. There is a lot of information regarding web site design, internet security and boosting your sales. Usually many books would leave off in this area but not this one. It has information on taking your retail business online , selling from a storefront and covers some important ideas like affiliate marketing and finding a niche. Whether deciding to operate on Ebay or with your own website this book is jam packed with information. Even as an experienced online user I found myself making notes from many of the sections in the book including those with suggestions on what to do to expand sales, deal with changes and other customer issues. Just as a note this is one huge book. Over 800 pages including the index and for the price a bargain. For Ebayers I would recommend this book and a general Ebay book as a package to buy. If working directly on your own e-commerce site I would recommend this book with with a web 2.0 or social marketing book.

    A Great Reference! 5 by .. Buy & Try ()
A wonderful reference to have at your desk. It truly is like having lots of books in 1 - 800+ pages!
