Product Description Problems of suffering, the conscience marred by sin, the transience of human life, the passionate love of woman and man. These are some of the subjects dealt with in the five poetical books of the Old Testament surveyed in this well-written introduction. Customer reviews Awesome Book by .. R. Anderson II () Great Text Book, If You Can Afford It, I Advise You To Go Ahead And Get It!!! Very Benificial and Helpful. Its Easy Reading Too!!!
An excellent intro to Poetry and Wisdom in the Bible by .. Fred D. Mueller (New Jersey) Mr. Bullock's book is a perfect addition for any student of the Bible. His work is thorough and fair. He considers numerous opinions about authorship, canonicty and interpretation presenting them competently and without bias, then explains his reasons for his perspective, which usually lands in the evangelical camp. He also does fine work presenting cognate literature from other ancient cultures. This book can be used as a college textbook or even in seminaries and graduate schools. For new students, it will take some work, but that work will be well rewarded. Any reader will gain insight into the five books of the Bible - Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Songs and Job - covered in depth in this fine work.
Now a classic work for the study of the Prophets. by .. () Bullock's Introduction has now become a classic work in the field of the biblical Prophets. It covers each book of the Old Testament prophets in a thorough and consistent mannor. The author provides a wealth of background material and addresses problematic questions or texts as they relate to each prophet. Outlines for each book are provided as well as a brief summary of the message and key theological points. The book is written from an evangelical perspective, certainly a strength, as it pays careful attention to the biblical text and the intent of the prophet. This is an excellent introduction and summary to the prophets and highly recommended for any who want to further their knowledge about the prophets and recent areas of discussion.

Product Description David Howard introduces us to the 12 historical books of the Old Testament, providing fascinating cultural background information, sketching major themes, solving problems, and answering questions. Customer reviews bible study of old testament by .. Lester D. Kinkade (wharton tx) I used this in bible study. It is comprehensive, scholarly and covers the entire historical books (versus the Pentateuch) I found it more helpful than the book on just Genesis, exodus, etc. It is not for beginning study, a good teacher helps. It is a little heavy and cumberson to hold in your lap.
Excellent resource by .. M. J. Keel (Somewhere in the Far East) This is an excellent resource for anyone interested in research and teaching on the Old Testament (OT). It starts off with an introduction to OT literature then in each chapter gives historical information and theological analysis of all of the OT historical books. If you have ever found it useful to go to a commentary to get an overview of an OT book you will find this book doubly useful. Howard is a good writer to boot. Highly recommended for bible students, pastors, teachers, and anyone else interested in studying the bible in depth.
The best book ever on the Historical Books! by .. Kristian Lavrentidis (walt_stockholm@hotmail.com) (Stockholm, Sweden) David Howard has compiled a great review of the Old Testament Historical books, probably the best work ever on this subject! Howard is lucid, scholarly, and exegetical; this book is a necessity for any student of the Old Testament! He does a great job on outlining, interpreting, and applying these books; he also has a great introductory chapter about the nature of narrative material. No one is left in the dark about the various aspects of the Historical books after reading this! He also includes plenty of detail and indices for the reader. This book is truly great!

Nigel Fearn (Ashton, Idaho United States) I got quick delivery and good quality from this Seller.
Very satisfied would buy again.
Excellent product by .. Roy Bolinger (Apple Valley, Ca USA) My grandson is participating in a rendition of 'Cats' at his elementary school and I wanted the book to show him how productions like 'Cats' are based on literature. In this case he was thrilled to be able to read the original poems and then see how they are staged for an audience. The product was delivered in perfect condition in a very timely manner. I would recommend this to anyone.
"Cats" lovers delight! by .. B. DeLand (Paducah, KY USA) This is a must have for anyone who loves the broadway musical "Cats". Totally delightful!
It's about cats, cats, and more Cats. by .. Emmit W. Stewart (Canton, OH USA) I had read this book before and loved it, but when I met Boris, a real, live version of Rum Tum Tugger, I had to buy a copy to show his owner.
It is amazing how little had to be done to turn these poems into a great musical comedy. I am, of course, talking about Cats. Most of the poems went directly into the show without any change whatever in their wording, and only three songs were added. Let's give full credit to Mr. Webber, It took a musical genius to do that, and one of the added songs, Memories, could stand alone as a masterpiece in any company, but most of the delight of the show comes from the wonderful feline characters created in this book.
Jennyanydots, Old Deuteronomy, Gus the theatre cat, Spindleshanks, Bustipher Brown, McCavity, Mr. Mistofflees, Mungo Jerry, and Rumpleteaser all moved effortlessly from page to stage with no changes. That has to be some sort of record. If you loved Cats (the show) you need to read this book. If you love cats (the critters) you'll want to read this book. If you like poetry, you should read this book. If you like dogs, read the battle of the Pekes and the Pollicles. (You can skip over the part about the intervention of the great rumpus cat.)
It was written for his godchildren, but it's a great read for everyone. It's not expensive, so get it to read to your children, but read it for yourself first.

Product Description When the king's son found gems in his horse's mane, he wondered, and still held his peace. But that night he withdrew early from the feast and hid himself in the shadows of the stable. Presently in came Cordita, her beauty shining through her rags...These magical tales take us through the highlights of the year, through festivals and birthdays. Customer reviews My mother read it to me when I was 7... by .. Carly S. (San Francisco, CA, USA) Of all of the books read to me when I was little, few stand out more prominently in my memory than this one. Now, over twenty years later, I am so pleased to have just found my old copy, which I hope someday to read to my children. What a magical book!
Brilliant by .. Michael Joseph (Keaau, Hawaii USA) One of the best children's books I have run across. The book explains the consequences and dangers of the shadow world and the rewarding richness of standing in the light. It is presented in a non religious, simple and magical way. Opening the doors of understanding for children and reminding adults at the same time.
A magical book by .. Jessica D. Nunes (USA) My 6-year old's teacher reminded me about this book at our conferences. It is a magical journey for children to share. Sylvia lives in a cottage near the woods with her mother. She is very connected to the world of gnomes and fairies, and spends her days doing things I wish I could do with my girl - she bakes, paints, visits with the Old Woodsman who smells like the trees and love...She has a "Sister-in-the-Bushes" to talk to. She has friends in the village who come to her St. Nicholas party. It's an amazing life. Each night her mother tells her a story, usually connected to the events of her day. Then, Sylvia puts her "Wonder Book" out on her bedside table. During the night, the Rhyme-Elves come to paint a picture and write her a short poem connected to her day. The book is full of seasonal celebrations from Michelmas to Advent to St. Nicholas to King's Day. Sylvia loses her first tooth (which means that NOW she can go to school). I highly recommend this book to everyone looking to find something magical to read at bedtime. My daughter is spellbound. One minor fault, easily changed when reading - the dark gnomes, ones who are evil and scary (leading her into the woods when her mother told her not to go in alone, but helping her experience why she needs to mind her mother) are all referred to as 'black imps'. I changed that to 'dark imps'. PS - my daughter has had an easier time not being led by her inner 'dark imp' since we've been reading this together. But, I fight the guilts over not providing her with a Wonder Book of her own!
Quick delivery and book in great condition. by .. Elena M. Guzman (Boulder, CO USA) I was pleased to receive the book as quickly as I did. I was nervous that I would get it too late for my son's 7th birthday but no, I had a few days to spare. Thanks.
To be seven again by .. Andrea M. Savar (Seattle,Wa.) I was given this book when I was seven and have since cherished it for its beauty and sensitivity. It is a wonderful read aloud book for ages 6-8 and mostly 7 that is inspiring both for children and adults alike. Enjoy!

Product Description Get a clearer picture of Israel's history, as well as a sharper understanding of Old Testament prophets and prophetic literature in this well-written introduction. Customer reviews Well-rounded presentation of Old Testament Prophetic Books by .. Zachary Jones (Wake Forest, NC) This is definitely a textbook, and one I would highly recommend to anyone doing any level of preaching or research on the prophetic books. It is not organized cannonically (in the order the books appear in the Bible), but rather chronologically (when it is most likely they were written). Rather than give you a straight-forward "here's how it is" factual approach Bullock outlines the various controversies and stances regarding each book.
That latter fact itself makes the book very valuable, for where commentaries or other books take one perspective and tend to present that as fact, this one presents varying perspectives. It definitely points towards one perspective in each case, supplying reasons for that support.
I'm not so sure I would recommend this for more passive Bible study, of the "I just want to learn a little more about the Bible" variety. Rather, this book is for anyone who really wants to dive in and study about the prophetic books and start to try understand them from a more academic perspective.
So, in the end, this is a solid book to supplement any Bible study being done on the prophetic books.
Still outstanding and helpful by .. C2CRev (Phoenix) Bullock gives a quick grasp of major history, theological, biographical, stylistic themes and issues you'll encounter in the research. He's a guide with sound reasoning and perspective. Direct and complete enough to start in-depth research on a sound path. His judicious accounts of the pertinent history save me hours. My copy is 20 years old, and I still use it every time I prepare any OT prophet sermon. Emphasis on crisis preaching never goes out of date.
Superior history of the latter prophets by .. eric j. swierczek (larkspur, colorado United States) Dr. Bullock has written a comprehensive look at the latter prophets, from Jonah to Malachi. This book is a must have for all those interested in the history of the Old Testament. The bibliography alone is worth the price of the book.

Product Description Editors Bill T. Arnold and Hugh G. M. Williamson present more than 160 in-depth articles on the essential historical, literary, theological, interpretive and background topics for studying the historical books of the Old Testament (Joshua, Judges, 1-2 Sam Customer reviews Great source to begin research! by .. LOTR Librarian () Over 150 articles comprise the Dictionary of the Old Testament: Historical Books, which covers the books of Joshua, Judges, 1-2 Samuel, 1-2 Kings, 1-2 Chronicles, Ezra, and Nehemiah.
Each entry is concluded by an extensive bibliography and useful cross-references to other articles in the Dictionary Of The Historical Books.
A unique feature that enhances the readability and usefulness of this dictionary is that the entries are in reality "macro-essays" on larger categories or topics instead of separate smaller essays on the component parts. For example, "Absalom" will be found in the discussion
of "David's Family," and "Anat" under "Canaanite Gods and Religion."
The entries discuss and evaluate many of the key interpretative problems and the relevance of comparative data from literary, cultural, and archaeological sources that pertain to these biblical texts. Archaeological studies are used extensively throughout the entries, with numerous sites being treated separately in addition to their citation within other contexts.
With a wide range of backgrounds and points of view among the 120 contributors, this dictionary contains fairly even and well-balanced entries that provide a panoramic view of the present landscape in this segment of scholarly research on the historical books. It must be noted, however, that the contributors to the dictionary do not merely present but also evaluate data. While some readers no doubt will take issue with some of the interpretations of the various contributors, the entries articulate the state of the question for these issues and topics and offer new directions and interpretative possibilities for the future.
The volume concludes with three indexes: Scripture, subjects,
and articles. Whether you are a scholar, a graduate student, or a layman looking for a summation of scholarly opinion, this volume is for you!
Solid and in-depth by .. S. Bachmann () Contains a wealth of solid and in-depth information aimed at scholars and educated lay persons. Articles are well written (and can be a bit dense), very informative, and contain a select bibliography for further study. An indispensible tool for any serious student of the Bible.

Easy to read and understand by .. The Teacher (Washington, DC) This is an outstanding resource book for the novice or the scholar. It is well written and very easy to understand. Arnold covers the Old Tesatment thoroughly. You will not be disappointed.
A magnificent achievement by .. Commentary Surveyor (Stoughton MA) Editors Bill Arnold and Paul Williamson have enlisted an international cast of scholars; each addressing topics within their specialties. In the past twenty years a burgeoning list of titles addressing the historicity of the OT has appeared, thus making it necessary for a dictionary that addresses these particular concerns. With entries ranging from "agriculture" to "Zion traditions," DOTHB packs competently presented information cover-to-cover. One of the best dictionaries I have encountered.

Customer reviews Feast on imagery and images by .. Aaron Dwight King (Melbourne, Australia) Edward Gorey brought this collection of T.S. Eliot's verse to life in a new way. I strongly recommend both this edition and the old illustrated edition with illustrations by Nicholas Bentley.
Gorey brings his wry humour and pathos to bear on poetry that deserves multiple interpretations. Bentley brought a more straight reading to the work, but did a great job nonetheless.
Also, HARD TO FIND but well worth it are the childrens' picture-book versions by Errol Le Cain of Growltiger's Last Stand with The Pekes and the Pollicles and the Song of the Jellicles and Mr Mistoffelees with Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer. These are stunning picture-books that I sought out to own as an adult with no kids and no intention of having any, simply because I loved them.

The Beginning of a Great Series! by .. Michelle A. Cope (Columbus, Ohio) When I started reading Nancy Drew, I started in the middle. My seventh read was "The Secret of the Old Clock".
I'm glad I started in the middle. This book meant more to me. By the time I read it, I'd done research on the series, the creator, the pen name and the ghostwriters. Although the books I read in the series are revised, I love the introduction of this character. I kept in mind that this series began during a time when girl detectives were at a minimum.
I love the plot, I especially liked the characters, like Nancy's old classmates who were just plain mean. It was a page turner and I was on the edge while Nancy worked hard to escape a locked closet.
I'm happy to be a Nancy Drew fan!

Product Description Once upon a time, Jacobia “Jake” Tiptree was a hotshot money manager to Manhattan’s rich and dreadful—until she left city life behind for a centuries-old fixer-upper in the quaint seaside town of Eastport, Maine. But even this tiny haven has its hazards—and they can be astonishingly deadly…. What would you do if a long-buried book was unearthed from beneath your 1823 fixer-upper—a book containing your name written in blood? That’s the mystery Jacobia “Jake” Tiptree faces in the midst of her latest old-house renovations. But it’s only the first in a town better known for its scenic views and historic homes than its body count. Now Jake is putting aside her hammer and fixing to find someone who’s got the blueprint for a perfect murder. Complete with Home Repair Is Homicide Repair Tips! Customer reviews The X-Files Come To Maine by .. Beth D (Omaha, NE) Finding a book that was put into the foundation of your 1823 fixer upper may not be strange, but when your name, Jacobia Tiptree, is at the end of a list of all the house owners that were written on one of the pages, that is a mystery.
Jake had sent to the book to Horace Robotham to investigate if this book was real and if so, how a book almost 200 years old had her name written in it?
Now Horace Robotham was dead and his friend Dave DiMaio was on his way to investigate.
Normally, Jake would have been happy to help but it was difficult to find the time when she was also sledgehammering her bathroom, hosting a party for Eastport's favorite teacher. Her son Sam's renewed drinking problem and her dad & housekeepers romantic issues.
But when more deaths happened that are traced to the book, Jake decides she needs to find the time before someone close to her becomes the latest fatality.
***********SPOILER ALERT***********
DON'T READ FURTHER IF YOU HAVEN'T READ NAIL BITER OR TRAP DOOR.
***********************************
Highlights:
None. This is without question the worst book in the series. I agree with another reviewer, what the heck was this book about?
Lowlights.
The storyline: Was this supposed to be mystery / horror/ paranormal? I don't know but it failed at all three.
Sam - When the series started Jake's son Sam was a teenager just coming out of his drinking and drug addictions and putting his life on track, working towards becoming a boat builder. Now, he's right back where he started and it's depressing. Books should never take their storyline backwards.
Jake - She is the only character who the more I get to know, the less I like. She doesn't seem to get that the probable reason for Sam's decline is that his father died, who he loved very much and was getting very close with.
Although Victor was a cheater, the more you find out about the shady dealings and criminal activities Jake was involved in with her job, makes you wonder why she considers herself to have such clean hands, especially since her job could easily have gotten Victor and Sam killed.
Bella - the housekeeper. She was introduced early in the series and although she has always been somewhat unattractive, she had been married to a good-looking guy and has a very attractive daughter. Why has she suddenly started to look like a gargoyle with a face that frightens children? The continuous descriptions of how horrifying ugly she is become quite tedious and the relationship she suddenly has with Jake's father seems to have come out of nowhere.
Victor - If he had been killed off in the first or second book of the series, every reader would have cheered. But you don't turn a creep into the best character in the book and then get rid of him and have Jake continue to make nasty remarks two books after he's gone.
Almost every character is this book annoyed me, from Ellie & George and their kid (who I am sick of already). To Wade who spends most of his time doing nothing except going to work, and coming back home.
I personally feel the series has declined in the last few books, starting with the ending of Nail Biter. The only thing I can see improving this is for the next book to open with Jake waking up in the hospital and finding out that after solving the mystery in Nail Biter, she had gone unconscious from the numerous times she's been hit in the head and knocked out. Victor had operated on her to save her life and the end of Nail Biter, and the last two books Trap Door and The Book Of Old Houses were just the dreams she was having while in a coma.
I would settle for a "Dallas" type dream ending than have this series continue on the way it seems to be heading.
The Book of Old Houses by .. Karen B. Harnden () This story was a little hard to get into. In some ways it was frustrating to read. When she was going all over town trying to get clues and investigate, she was supposed to have a party that afternoon, and she kept saying she needed to get home and work on it, and she never did. The party came off with everyone helping, but that doesn't often happen in real life. I usually enjoy Sarah Graves novels, and this one had some good things in it, but it was not a real enjoyable read.
Book of Old Houses by .. Erica D. Vetsch () The fictional world created by Sarah Graves in her Home Repair is Homicide series is one of my favorites. I enjoyed this book, as I have every book in the series so far. In fact, after I read this one, I started the series over again.
Strong entry in the series by .. PatKG (St. Cloud, MN United States) If you're read, and liked, the other books in the series, you'll like this one, too. It hasn't worn out, yet. If it's your first time reading a Sarah Graves book, and you're a cozy mystery fan, you'll probably like it well enough to read the rest of the series. Isn't that all you really need to know???
Takes a while to rev up, then the fun starts by .. Bookreporter.com (New York, New York) Professor Dave DiMaio is on a revenge mission. His good friend, bookseller Horace Robotham, has been murdered. DiMaio brings his .22 revolver as he heads for Eastport, Maine, where he hopes to settle up. There, he finds Jacobia "Jake" Tiptree in her old money pit of a house, impulsively dismantling her ancient bathroom with a sledgehammer. DiMaio knew that Robotham had Jake's book --- the ancient, written-in-blood book that listed all the residents of Jake's house (including Jake). The book has gone missing, and DiMaio suspects he knows who has it and who killed his friend.
Meanwhile, DiMaio asks Jake to hide his gun for him, which she does in a cellar lockbox. He claims he only brought the firearm because he had the jitters, but that doesn't ring true for Jake, who is very concerned about his motives. DiMaio can't stay with Jake (especially since there is no bathroom now). He moves into a motel while asking pointed questions of the townsfolk about one crackpot local named Bert Merkle. DiMaio believes that Merkle, with all his talk of flying saucers and little green men, stole the book and killed Robotham.
Jake and her sidekick, Ellie, are right on DiMaio's trail, hoping to prevent another death while also finding out the truth about Robotham's murder and Jake's missing book. Their urgency is complicated by the fact that DiMaio's gun is now missing. Plus, Jake had agreed long ago to have an enormous, formal tea party for the town-revered Merrie Fargeorge, an ex-schoolteacher who just happens to hate Jake. The party is rapidly looming, even as Jake discovers her claw-foot tub perilously lodged in her staircase. Jake is also concerned about her housekeeper, Bella, who is not reacting well to Jake's father's marriage proposal. And, as always, her worry over Sam, her teenage son newly returned from drug rehab, is ever present.
Jake cannot resist her detective instincts. Along the way, she discovers new suspects. Could the killer/book thief possibly be wannabe-writer Ann Talbert? Sure, Talbert is demanding the book so she can write her "erotic paranormal historical-fiction novel with grippingly suspenseful romantic over-tones and cutting-edge science-fiction subplots, told from the point of view of Mary Magdalene." But her demands could well be a cover-up. On the other hand, teen Jason Riverton (a friend of Merkle) seems suspicious, since he has wallpapered his black-painted bedroom with every article ever printed about Robotham's death. Even if Riverton had nothing to do with the murder, what is his connection with Merkle?
Nancy Drew fans have long implored her not to enter the big creepy house; in the Home Repair is Homicide books, the detective actually lives in that falling-down mansion. Jake is an endearing character in a cast of colorful locals. Her descriptions of home repairs gone awry are downright laugh-out-loud hysterical to anyone who has undergone old house remodeling (she describes turning on the tap in her bathroom, only to have the handles snap off in her hand, "followed by a geyser so forceful, it hosed all the mildew off the places where the blackish stuff had flourished for decades..."). Her ancient book, written in blood, is intriguing, and author Sarah Graves dishes up some late plot twists.
Readers are unlikely to care that the mystery really doesn't rev up until late in the novel and that it takes a bit of a rear seat to the rest of Jake's life; these books are way too much fun to miss out on. New fans will join the rest of us in counting down the days until the next Home Repair is Homicide mystery is released in 2009.
