Publication Manual of the APA 5 by .. B Werner (Cypress, CA)
Great service from vendor and book arrived in "like new" condition as stated. Would order again from vendor.

Do you really need this text? 3 by .. n2drama (Midwest)
I had to buy this text as part of my Master's program; however, in reading it, I'm questioning why. If you have Office 2007 for Students, the APA/MLA formatting is in the program. There is also a program called Paper Doctor that does your formatting for you. These are both cheaper than buying this textbook, and you're not learning new info from scratch. You only have to go through simple tutorials.

The company that sent me the text was very efficient and timely. I'm just wondering if I wasted my money.

A must have 4 by .. J. Marren (Glen Ridge, NJ USA)
Every discipline has its arcana to be mastered, and the social sciences are no exception. But if that's where you are, this manual is a must-have. I'm what they call a "recovering lawyer"--lawyers have their style manual which is just as bad--you just gotta learn it!

Having said that, I didn't find this manual all that hard to use. With a little practice and a lot of diligent searching for the right example of a citation, you can learn the basics. I relied heavily on Chapter 4, with its extensive list of 95 examples of everything under the sun.

I'd advise spending a little more and investing in the spiral bound version. The pages are large, the print clear, and it lies nice and flat on the desk. Every little bit helps!

If you can wait you should - NEW EDITION COMING SOON 3 by .. M. C. McCombs (Boston, MA)
If you can wait to buy this book you should try. The APA is currently re-writing it, and it will include more on electronic documents.

As a text it is average. Nothing amazing, but what is required.

APA style is difficult, but very useful 5 by .. K. D. Mitchell ()
The APA manual (5th edition in this case) is sometimes difficult to follow. However, the concepts for proper written communication are extremely useful, especially at the doctoral learning level.

The Norton Anthology of Poetry (shorter version) 3 by .. Tadhg Sweeney (Cambridge, MA)
It was not clear when I selected this book on line that it was the shorter version of the 5th edition. Since I am using this for assigned readings in a poetry course, none of the assigned pages are relevant and about 20% of the assigned poems are not in the shorter version, both of which shortcomings handicap my use of the book.

Pleasing poetry 5 by .. James Culver (Moreland Hills, Ohio United States)
Just what I needed for my poetry class. Great notes on each page and at the back of the book.

Index? 2 by .. Philip B. Long ()
The only index for this book that is viewable online is the index of a previous edition. Maybe the indexs are the same, but I bought the wrong edition because of the index confusion.

Awesome! 5 by .. Victoria Alexie (Long Island, New York)
I got my book dirt cheap and fast and in excellent condition. Can't want more than that!!!!!

YES YOU CAN AFFORD IT, it's worth it! 5 by .. Jessica Anya Blau, author, The Summer of Naked Swim Parties (Maryland)
Chances are you're buying this book for a class. So what. READ IT. ENJOY IT. The editors of Norton have done the hard work for you--they've sifted through thousands and thousands and thousands of poems and found the ones that are the most moving, profound, revolutionary, intelligent, touching, startling, unique, and ground-breaking. All you have to do is READ THEM.
And let's say that you fancy yourself as someone who "just doesn't get poetry." Fear not, once you've gone through this book you will "get" poetry. It will be under your skin, in your heart, in your mind. Relax.

not nearly as good as the 3rd edition 2 by .. Miriam Mott-smith (california, usa)
Having used the third edition on many an occasion, i was dismayed to find the 5th edition so inferior---no nutritional assessment tools are included at all, and of course then, no discussion whatever of the validity and reliability of various screening methods. No discussion of HOW to do a proper 24 hour diet recall, just the listing of it in the assessment process. i was further disappointed to read the statement that babies should be breastfed until the age of one year: the AAP recommendation reads "for AT LEAST one year."

Product Description

With the same straightforward and clear writing style that has made previous editions so successful, Understanding Operating Systems, Fifth Edition, provides the ideal blend of operating theory and practice. Coverage includes the fundamentals of operating systems: what they are, what they do, how they function, how they can be evaluated, and how they compare to one another. Part One describes the management of memory, processors, devices, files, and networks as well as system security, ethics, and overall system management. The second part of the book focuses on four specific operating systems (UNIX, MS-DOS, Windows, and Linux) and how they apply the theory explained in the first part of the text. Updates include discussions of new technologies that affect operating system design, including multi-core chips and virtualization, making this edition a current and relevant resource.

A worthy selection as a text for an operating system class 5 by .. Charles Ashbacher (Marion, Iowa United States(cashbacher@yahoo.com))
As the regular teacher of an operating systems class for computer science majors, I have evaluated many potential textbooks. This book ranks up among the top tier of books that could be used in the class. The coverage is complete, both in breadth and suitable depth. Diagrams are extensively used; there is coverage of how networking is incorporated into the actions of operating systems and specific details regarding Unix, MS-DOS, Windows operating systems and Linux are included. The text is understandable, easily readable and well organized.
There are three sets of exercises at the end of the chapters: research topics, exercises and advanced exercises. Unfortunately, no solutions to any of them are included. For the first time in several years, I am not teaching operating systems this fall. Therefore, it was not necessary for me to select a text. If that were not the case, this book would certainly have been among my top two or three candidates.

DVI IS NOT USED FOR COMPRESSION 1 by .. H. Lowmiller ()
On page 22 at the top it speaks of a new video compression Digital Video Interface (DVI), that will compress video to a ratio of 150:1 and will store an hour length of video under a gigabyte.

If you are wanting to learn the low level inner workings of an OS, skip this book.

Nice Introduction to Operating Systems 4 by .. Siddhardha (Colorado, USA)
The book is divided into two parts. The first part deals with the basics of operating systems which includes memory manager, processor manager, file manager, device manager and network manager. This part is presented in such a way that it can be easily comprehended by even novices and the authors did an excellent job here. The second part of the book deals with specific operating systems. Details about MS-DOS, Windows 2000, UNIX, OpenVMS Alpha and OS/390 operating systems are provided in this part. While there are few locations where the explanation is not very clear, for the most part it is understandable.

This book was a required text for an undergrad course in Operating Systems I was taking. I read it from cover to cover and overall I liked it very much. I would have liked to see more visuals, examples and exercises. I will not sell this book but I will keep it for future reference. Like another reviewer mentioned, some knowledge about computer peripherals is necessary to study this book, however no specific language is assumed. Highly recommended to those who are new to this topic.

Great Intro to a complicated subject 5 by .. Karen (Seattle)
This book really hits the important info about a complicated subject. When I was studying OS in college, I didn't need to create operating systems, I needed to know what they're all about. This was the required book in my OS class and I could read and understand even the complicated stuff. It's a good starting place. This is one of only 2 textbooks that I didn't sell when I graduated. It's still a good reference. I highly recommend it.

Anemic, Obsolete, and Contains factual errors 2 by .. Barbara Nostrand (Geneseo, NY USA)
When I received this book in the mail, I was curious as to why it was including a large section on MS-DOS. While there is historical and pedagogical justification for covering MS-DOS, the cover text claims that MS-DOS is one of "the three most widely-used operating systems". This statement is a bit dated. While MS-DOS may have formed the basis for early versions of MS-Windows, current versions are NT based. The book's discussion of the relationship between MS-DOS, Windows, and Windows-NT is a bit muddled.

Turning to the actual section on MS-DOS, we read that MS-DOS was the "successor to CP/M" which is correct. However, the authors go on to flatly claim that "CP/M ran "8-bit machines marketed by Apple Computer and Tandy Corporation". This claim is hard to understand. CP/M was an operating system which ran on Intel 8080 and Zilog Z80 processors. The Apple II computer incorporated a Mostech 1802 processor which executed a superset of the Motorola 6800 instruction set. The two instruction sets families were mutually incompatible. Further, it is well known that Steve Wozniak produced the operating system for the Apple II. Ignorance of instruction set incompatibility is not a good indicator of textbook reliability.

While the book does cover Bell Unix and Linux, it does not appear to cover BSD. BSD is historically significant in both the evolution of the unix operating system and the internet. The index also lacks a reference to the GNU project which is a pivotal component of any delivered Linux system.

While this text does cover some operating system theory and does distribute architectural principles and features such as RAID systems throughout the text, it does little to explain how operating systems actually work. In particular, it does not have much in the way of code samples for key components such as the multitasking kernel.

This text lacks a separate section for architecture review. It begins with a chapter on memory allocation and proceeds to a chapter on process scheduling. While architectural features are distributed throughout the text, the text can not stand alone for programs which expect student to learn systems programming.

Physically, the book is handsomely produced and is of a more student-friendly size than many other textbooks. It is well illustrated with illustrations for such classic concurrency problems as the Dining Philosopher's Problem. This book may be appropriate for a course taught to future IT technicians, but should not be considered as a text for a Computer Science, Software Engineering, or Computer Engineering program.

Guides to the evaluation of Permanent Impairment 5 by .. Calvin Ramsey (Lexington MS)
This book is jam packed and jelly shut with powerful information for the sharp expert who simply needs to just fine tune his or her skills. This is also a must for every primary caregivers personal library.

better, but could still use improvement 3 by .. Ronald Reagan (Philadelphia, MS)
Several chapters, such as the one on the spine, lower extremities, skin, and pulmonary system are, indeed, quite well-written and fairly easy to follow.

The chapter on upper extremities, however, is simply in deplorable shape.

Moreover, the AMA guides did not do a good job of explaining when it is appropriate to use a certain method and when it is not. in many cases, the evaluator is not sure which method to use, even after a careful reading of the guides.

The overarching philosophy of the Guides is not explained as well as it should be.

All in all, however, a vast improvement over the much more difficult to use fourth edition.

needless to say, a physician using this book needs both an instructor and an appropriate patient population to refine his/her skills as a disability evaluator.

discusses globalisation's effects 4 by .. W Boudville (Terra, Sol 3)
This recent book is the latest in Massey's long running series. Just over 20% of the selections here are new; ie. not in the 4th edition. Massey gives emphasis on topics that have garnered recent broad interest.

Especially globalisation. We see speculations on the societal repercussions of this, where the societies are those of the developed countries. Equally interesting would also be investigations of the rippling effects on the developing countries that are benefiting from outsourcing.

Decouverte et Creation - is what we stanford grads cut our teeth on. 5 by .. MARC M. SNYDER (Pittsburgh PA Etats Unis Monde)
I was frankly surprised to see the anger with which a couple reviewers attacked this book. It's a great book - much better than many that are published today - which are overladen with ancilary materials. I'm currently writing a textbook, and refer to this one often. Note to self: there is no perfect textbook. The direct method (aka immersion) works well if you've been trained in it. I've worked with Hester, Barson, and other greats in the language training field. Feel free to visit my site for other tips on language learning.

A snobby book -- 400 Blows 1 by .. ()
Thank you, Cathy Sahu (previous reviewer). I am using this book for an introductory college French class and agree with Cathy's observations about the text, the workbook, and the tapes -- I could not have said it better myself.

I don't understand why professors would choose this book to teach a class. It is simply not effective for all the reasons previously mentioned. I have had to supplement this book with three other books. The lessons are spotty, incomplete, inconsistent. Instructions are in French, which is very frustrating to a beginning student. I have spent more time trying to understand the instructions with the use of a dictionary than learning the lessons. The footnotes are not even in English. Just like my French teacher, it moves too quickly, does not explain, is not helpful, nor forgiving. If you've ever seen the classic Trufaut film, "400 Blows," this book is as torturous as that first scene in the classroom. This book will make you NOT want to learn French.

In contrast, I've found an excellent French text/workbook by Barron's called "French Now! Level 1" (3rd edition). I breezed through the preliminary and first lesson in about 2 hours, getting used to reading and writing in French, integrating new vocabulary words including verbs, nouns, and articles. The exercises in "French Now! Level 1" are truly helpful.

I also recommend a computer program on CD-ROM called "Smart French: Learn French from Real French People." I think this is helpful in learning the correct accents, in understanding spoken French, and improving and "naturalizing" YOUR spoken French.

Greatest elementary French method going 5 by .. Kathryn Karczewska (Boston, MA)
I have been teaching French for 17 years and I have never found a first-year method that even begins to equal M. Jian's. It strikes the perfect balance between simplifying complicated grammatical principles and encouraging students to resist passivity in their language acquisition efforts. I find the readings, cultural materials, and supplementary lab exercises exemplary. For any mature student who is interested in learning French language rapidly and correctly, I enthusiastically recommend this method. A must for first-year college and university French courses.

Part of a plot to stamp out the French language? 1 by .. C. Sahu (Southern California)
First of all, let me make clear that I'm writing about the "cinquieme" (5th) edition of this textbook. The earlier editions aren't, I think, too bad.

This is a shockingly miserable textbook. I've been jotting down its faults as they crop up while I study 1st semester French. Here are some of them, though definitely not all (and no, this isn't sour grapes -- I'm getting an "A"):

Firstly, all the grammatical explanations are in French, and thus, very difficult to understand for someone learning beginning French. I realize the theory of language immersion is currently in vogue, but this is a ridiculous application. Students of French need to learn common vocabulary, not words like "preposition" and "pronoun." Even if they are cognates, it's still hard to understand and a source of extreme frustration, even for me, though I've taken French before. Also, while the student is stumbling through these explanations, he's probably also mispronouncing them, and memorizing his own mispronunciations. Then, to avoid English, the editors resort to all sorts of extremes, like the silly picture on p. 119. And, at the end of it all, they still end up having to use English footnotes, anyway (p. 114, etc.)

Another problem is the choice of vocabulary. They use irregular words (like "oeil" and its plural, "yeux," introduced too early on p. 20) in examples of grammatical rules, making for more confusion than if they'd used simpler, more regular words. (Vocabulary words, in fact, are thrown in almost without context: there are some 100 vocab words listed at the end of each chapter, many of which have only been used once in the chapter, and not at all in any exercise. These lists have no accompanying English translations, so you have to flip, flip, flip to the back of the book, a big waste of time.)

The dictionary is not good. There is no English-to-French section, and in the French-to-English, some words are missing ("demon," for instance, used in an illustration on p. 49 but not in dictionary, and "choque" is not defined - does it mean shocked, or shocking?). And of course there's no pronunciation key, a problem common to many language texts nowadays but still bad news for the student of a language that has many irregular pronunciations. Also, there are problems like the fact that ce/cet/cette/ces are all listed together in the dictionary, so if you look up "ces" and don't remember it's the plural of "ce," you won't be able to find it.

Emphasis is not on the type of things you would need to communicate. In only Chapter 6, they are teaching which articles need to be used for cities vs. countries, something which takes a lot of memorization but would not be a big problem if you didn't know it. You have the feeling they just jumbled up the order in which things are introduced so as to make it different from the previous editions, so students couldn't get by with the old one.

Explanations are so terse as to be incomplete: in the same Chapter 6 mentioned above (p. 124), they list the rules for deciding which article to use, but then, when the rules overlap, they don't say which one takes precedence. I've noticed this problem frequently. Also, on p. 100, they give a list of colors to learn, including "blond" and "brun," but fail to note that these colors are used for people but not objects. Masculine and feminine are given, but no plural forms, except for marron and orange.

There are other little signs of thoughtlessness: on p. 83, for instance, in a exercise on telling time: they show two clocks at "12:00" and "12:20" but fail to show if it's supposed to be noon or midnight, which you're supposed to be learning: "midi" and "minuit."

The workbook and audiotapes are even more sloppily done: there are sometimes lines in the workbook laboratory section that are not said on the tape (the last few words in a list, for example, are forgotten). Often the choice of vocab in exercises is thoughtless: they'll give 2 masculine singular sentences, for instance, leaving out feminine and plural forms, which the student is supposed to be learning, too. There are never enough exercises, at any rate, in either text or workbook, to go over everything being taught - probably the worst problem out of the many.

The tape often leaves you no time to reply. You might think they expect you to use the pause button on your tape recorder -- but, if so, why are there humongous pauses while they wait for you to write things in? And why do they have written exercises in a workbook, anyway? Laboratory should be for speaking skills - you can do your writing at home. (My teacher says it is because people weren't buying the workbooks, so the editors took all the written exercises out of the textbook and put them in the workbook, so students would have to buy both.) Also, the speakers speak at a normal-to-fast conversational rate, which is way too fast for first year learners, resulting in more frustration.

Both textbook and workbook have been dumbed down, which may explain a lot of the above problems - it's almost like a slash job in places. This may be common in textbooks nowadays but the editors here could win awards. It's like huge chunks of content and sense were torn out to make more room for those nice, wide, white borders - and the pictures.

"Decouverte et Creation, cinquieme edition" is barely better than no text at all, especially since the price is obscene. Most teachers could probably do a better job producing handouts on the fly. Much better would be to have everyone in the class buy "Teach Yourself French" or any of the many other non-scholastic book and tape sets available.
