Product Description

Starting in the twentieth century, the American accessory designer looked to Europe and then said, I can do better. In a book commissioned by the Council of Fashion Designers of America and edited by Candy Pratts Price, with writing by Jessica Glasscock and Art Tavee, their achievements are revealed: a century of objects of necessity and desire poured forth to boutiques and department stores across the United States and the world. The forward-thinking American accessory designer, in collusion with America's royalty the Hollywood star and in sync with the unstoppable dominance of a rebellious popular culture, has assembled a cabinet of curiosities, including everything from Adrian s witty Hollywood hats to Ralph Lauren s all-American accoutrement to Madonna s rubber bracelets. It is a tradition that continues today with a stellar group of CFDA designers whose work exemplifies the American accessory.

Author : John Peacock
Number of Pages : 192
Publisher : Thames & Hudson
List Price : $34.95
Amazon Price : $21.32
Used Price : $17.99

Product Description

A companion volume to John Peacock's 20th Century Fashion and Men's Fashion, Fashion Accessories is the most comprehensive record ever published of fashion accessories throughout the twentieth century. More than 2000 full-color drawings -- the result of extensive research into paintings, photographs, and the accessories themselves -- reproduce each original item in meticulous detail, accompanied by a complete description. The book covers every kind of high-fashion male and female accessory for both day and evening wear: hats and caps; shoes, boots, slippers, and sandals; bags and purses; umbrellas and parasols; jewelry; scarves, stoles, and capes; gloves and belts; cravats, ties, and bow-ties. It includes a wide range of streetwear and sportswear, from baseball caps to plastic sandals, and every variety of the ubiquitous late-century sports shoe. All the century's archetypal accessories are identified, from the luxurious ostrich-feather and flower-bedecked hat of the 1910s and the cloche and pearl necklace of the 1920s, to the velvet scarf and mini-backpack of the 1990s. A final reference section contains a comprehensive bibliography and a chart that shows at a glance how accessories have evolved since 1900. There are biographies of the century's most influential accessories designers, from Salvatore Ferragamo and Manolo Blahnik to Patrick Cox and Georgina von Etzdorf, plus short histories of companies and firms that have played an important role in accessory design. For fashion enthusiasts, historians, and collectors, as well as designers working in the performing arts, this book will be the definitive reference work on twentieth-century accessories.

A Good Reference to Add to an Existing Fashion Library 4 by .. H. Leslea ()
Even though I wish that these were photos, I recognize just how much work went into compiling this book and others that John Peacock has produced. This is a great book to help one understand visually subtle changes in fashion over the decades of the 20th century. I found it very interesting and feel that I will constantly reach for it for inspiration and ideas.

Excellent source book 5 by .. Ekaterina Smoldyreva (Dubai, UAE)
I first saw this book in Casa Mila museum shop in Barcelona and later regretted that I didn't buy it. I was delighted to find this book on Amazon. It contains pages after pages of very detailed colour drawings of men's and women's accessories through the century including the explanations. Moreover, included are the pictures of the complete look of each decade. It is an excellent, complete and clear source book which can be a great aid for such a perfectionist like me

Shoes, Hats and Fashion Accessories 5 by .. Alyson E. Barnett (Cottonwood, AZ USA)
This book is great. It is just what I was looking for in doing some period research. The illustrations could only be better if they were in color. Anyone interested in fashion accessories of this period will not be disappointed.

Excellent reference 4 by .. A. Ivins (San Antonio, TX USA)
This book is exactly what it claims to be - a pictorial archive. For descriptions or details, Dover has a wide selection of books that will be of immense help with materials, construction, and history. For those who already have a working knowledge of the century in fashion, this book is a candy store of visual tidbits.

Just a note: very few fashion illustrations of the nineteenth century were colored; hand-coloring was a labor-intensive process reserved for high-end publications with limited runs. Check my Listmania list for some books with color illustrations.

What about descriptions? 3 by .. (San Diego, CA, USA)
This book has lovely pictures, although the author admits she has taken the liberty to decide which should be included for each year. It would be an even better book if the articles were named, better yet a small description, sometimes I wondered if a shoe were a man or woman's.

I think the book is good but stops short of being great but it is interesting and I would like to a sequel with the other drawings that were left out of this edition.

Shoes, Hats and Fashion Accessories 4 by .. (Boston, MA USA)
This review is from the viewpoint of a home sewer and crafter who adores vintage clothing, not a fashion historian, designer or illustrator.

Never having purchased any of the Pictorial Archives series before, I was surprised and initially disappointed by the black and white illustrations and the complete lack of text.

While it is fascinating to see how fashion accessories evolved over the decades there is no indication of whether an item was casual and day wear, or dressier for afternoon or evening. An index naming the style of each piece and/or notes explaining popular colors of the day would be helpful.

The black and white illustrations do render the detail of the accessories beautifully. With over 2,000 copyright free illustrations of wide variety of styles for men, women and children included I look forward to years of inspiration for fashion embellishment.

Yea! More pattern books! 5 by .. K. L. Cochran (Vancouver,WA)
Frances Grimble shares her meticulous vision with us once again. A great two book series full of facinating information and patterns galore. I cannot wait to clothe many a pretty lady using them. Not for the faint of heart. The patterns are period correct and I would advise an advanced skill level, or a great deal of patience. Always do a mock up. Remember these are patterns of the age. So start at the skin and work your way out to a glorious new costume.
Enjoy.

This is Volume 2 5 by .. CostumeDesigner (New York)
This is a great book, but you should know that it is not a second edition of Fashions of the Gilded Age, Volume 1. It is the second volume of the anthology, and a different book with all different patterns. The title is actually Fashions of the Gilded Age, Volume 2: Evening, Bridal, Sports, Outerwear, Accessories, and Dressmaking 1877-1882. It's just as good as Volume 1, none of the information is the same except the intro on how to use the patterns, and the dressmaking manual is really unique.

I heard both volumes were published but it took me awhile to find the second one on Amazon because it was mislisted. So I thought I'd warn other people.

Wow! Continued 5 by .. Historic Seamstress (Philadelphia, PA)
I just reviewed Volume 1, where I said the book contains a huge selection of patterns. Volume 2 focuses on patterns for evening dresses, bridal wear, sports wear, and outer wear. The chapters on accessories and trimmings contain some needlework patterns, embroidery and so on. I figure if I don't do the handwork I'll still have learned a lot about buying appropriate materials.

I bought both volumes, but they are organized so you can use them separately. Both contain the instructions for using the book and the special rulers that allow you to draft patterns to fit you. They also both have a big glossary, a bibliography, and two indexes.

Volume 2 has something really special though--a dressmaking manual. The book says it was rewritten from numerous rare original sources that are listed in the bibliography. But it's been rewritten so it doesn't read that way; you can't tell where any source begins or ends. That makes the manual a lot easier to use. And it's so long it could have been published as a book by itself. I'm glad to have it, because I've never been able to find a comprehensive sewing manual for this period. It even has corset-making instructions (the corset patterns are in Volume 1).

Both volumes are very well edited and produced. This is not a cheap printing job.

Anyone who does Old West reenactment or Victorian teas would love these books!

not at all helpful 1 by .. debbie jumatate (Houston, Texas)
This book was written to promoter herself and to drive up the cost of vintage clothing. Save your money, do your research online and go buy a dress at a thrift shop!

This book really cuts to the bone of the Vintage Business 4 by .. Maggie Peat (New York City)
I have purchased many books about vintage which are somewhat "Dated" in style, and yes Mason dresses big name celebrities, and that seems to be the major driving force behind the vintage industry today, as well as the designers who are using vintage to inspire their latest incarnations. If you are interested and have the money to shop at this level then this is a terrific book, with great photographs and wonderful biographies on important designers from the past who carved the way for the new designers from Zac Prozen, to Rick Owen or Imitation of Christ. It looks like there was a lot of hard work poured into this reference guide and I have found it to be extremely valuable at setting the record straight, giving great insight to an industry and lifestyle I can only dream of. This is not `Goodwill Shopping' or for the person with a `Beer Bottle Pocket', this is vintage for the Privilege class. I have seen Ms. Mason interviewed on television many times and she seems to be speaking from the heart with an abundance of knowledge and true passion, you can really tell she loves what she does and it certainly comes through in her book.

Forget this book! 1 by .. Amy Liz (Maryland)
This book has it all (or has nothing, depending on how you look at it): Unhelpful "advice" on how to find and sell vintage clothing, a price guide for clothing that isn't even illustrated in the book (come on... Pucci made a million of those now famous "mod" dresses... a vague description isn't going to cut it!), pictures of only HER clothing with no estimated value next to them, and an overall arrogant tone throughout the entire book. She basically states in so many words that you will fail in this business unless you can open up a posh boutique in L.A. (like her) and cater to the Hollywood elite. There is a nice short biography section on various designers, but that's not the point of this book, now is it? This book is nothing more than a 350+ page advertisement for her own store's clothing. She shouldn't include retail sales (from her store and a couple of others) in her price guide. Some values go back as far as the early nineties, that's too far back, and she also includes Christie's Oscar Dress Auction, which was a media-hyped charity auction from the late nineties. It's not a reliable source for pricing. I give this book two thumbs down, WAY down.

I Have Been Waiting For This Book!!! 5 by .. ()
Wow, I have to say I have been waiting a long time for this book. I have been collecting for many years, but never was able to find a satifactory referrence guide to important designer vintage. This book has it all! I just wish I could afford all the wonderful vintage that is out there in the world. This book sets you straight on the vintage industry as a whole, from the fashion design business to the little girl collector like me! The value listings are very helpful and the hundreds of biographies on the designers simply cut to the chase....where were they and when, as well as the puntuation marks of their careers. I also found the referral to the best vintage businesses worldwide very useful, now if the book only came with a plane ticket to Paris I would be thrilled! In my oppinion a must have for any serious vintage collector.

I Love Your Book 5 by .. ()

After filling all closets in my home I decided to establish my hobby and passion into a profitable business. I recently picked up your book and have happily discovered unfamiliar labels in my collection listed in your book! How fun! It has been a super reference-thanks!

Graciously,
Tina
