Everything you need to know 5 by .. Howard J. Anstedt (Milwaukee, WI)
This book is for Excel 2007 not the earlier versions. I found this book to have clear and complete coverage of Excel 2007. Very easy to follow information and very complete. Written for beginners to advanced users. AS noted by other reviewers though the print quality is somewhat faded but still very readable. Glad I bought this book.

Excel 2007 1 by .. Carole A. Bruno (Santa Rosa, CA)
The disc in the back of the book was sliced off (I guess by the printer.)

I need the disc replaced.

thank you.

tooo much literal explanation, hard to guess 1 by .. Y. Li (ca)

this is not good book. too much literal explanation, and the most importnat is there has no any screen with highlighted instruction , so user can quick understand where and how to do it. With too many small words to explain the operation, it's hard for user to understand and it takes user too much time to search around the location of what the author trying to point out from the screen.
I was trying to learn more skills of Excel, but after reading couple of chapters from this book, now my enthusiasm is gone!

Too dark to read 3 by .. D. A. Ponder (Woodbridge, Virginia)
The content might be spot on, but it's hard to tell because the book is printed on low grade, grey-colored paper, using grey print, resulting in low contrast. Maybe its recycled paper? Maybe the printing press ran out of ink? Dear Publisher: Hello!! We readers need white paper with black print!! Please send this book back to the Printer and have them try again!

Ok for the moderate user 3 by .. Cynthia Thomason (Lake mary, Fl USA)
As with all these "bible" software books. They are really a handy reference. Particularly for the moderate excel user.

More seasoned users could do just as well with the hundreds of online help areas centered around excel. I picked up this book to help me get over the "ribbon" hurdle with excel; but find I simply use online help rather than cracking open this book.

I give it 3 stars b.c it does what it professes to do.

Microsoft Office Excel 2007 Step by Step 4 by .. Cynthia K. Dennis (Divide CO USA)
I would need this book often for all the changes to Excel 2007. The CD was very valuable and am glad it is included. Would like a better process to remove the CD packet from the book so I don't damage the spine. I have ordered all the other Office 2007 books and will use them often.

Poor quality control. The errors and other problems make this a frustrating book to learn from 2 by .. Hank K (Central Coast, CA USA)
Microsoft Office Excel 2007 Step by Step (Step By Step (Microsoft))

I have to agree with another reviewer. This book is full of errors including example files that range from already completed or missing pieces. The book is hard to follow because some of the commands are not what is in the actual Excel product. The book lacks symbols or pointers for the keystroke instructions. The book has you making permanent changes and additions to Excel and not removing them. Need I go on.

Yes, I am learning some things the hard and slow way. Maybe this book was printed before the product was released but that is still no excuse for the lack of review before it was printed.

I had purchased the Step-by-Step Powerpoint 2007 book and it was excellent -- great directions, in the left margins small icons for the keys to press, and every example on the CD was correct. And believe it or not the instructions matched the Microsoft product.

I should have read the reviews before I purchased this book. This is my opinion.

Microsoft Office Excel 2007 Step by Step 5 by .. Nita (Atlanta, GA)
Great product for the beginner as well as intermediate. A truly great learning tool

Step By Step Office Excel 2007 1 by .. William F. Newbern (Bill)
This book looks good on the surface; However, The descriptions do not match the screens that I have on my version of Excel 2007. It is very difficult to follow and I would not recommend it to anyone new to this software.

Still counting the errors! 2 by .. Bobby W. (USA)

Being new to Excel 2007, I figured this book would be the best place to start, given that it's published by Microsoft Press.

I'm about halfway through, and though I have garnered some useful information, I found the book to be so full of errors(and bonehead moments) that it has become a form of entertainment just anticipating the next one.

The first little omen was on page xxiv, where under the Creating and Managing Presentations header, the bullet item "Creating Effective Presentations" appears twice. OK, nobody is perfect.

The very first exercise instructs you to open an existing workbook file, "Exception Summary". The very next instruction is to close the file. This wasn't an error, but it was pretty funny.

There are files and folders missing from the companion CD, missing instructions, instructions that lead you down rabbit holes...

To their credit, Microsoft does maintain an error log on their website, but at least one of the listed "fixes" is still wrong, as far as I can tell.

I wonder if Microsoft Press is hiring proofers...

Great Book 4 by .. Andrei (Boston, MA, USA)
I love this book. It is very detailed and very well structured. A must have if you are new to Excel 2007 (which is different than the previous versions but 100 times better and easier to use).

Good information, poor quality control 4 by .. R. Beerbower (Charlotte, NC)
The information presented in the book is quite detailed, and generally on the money in showing me what I need to know. I hit a problem with chapter 6 though. At first it looked like half the chapter was missing. On further investigation pages 131-162 are out of order. The pages run from 1 - 130, 163 - 194, 131 - 162, and then 195 and on. I'm returning the book to Amazon for replacement. Otherwise I'm quite happy with the book

If you need to go beyond the Dummies publications 4 by .. kavanava ()
I had the Dummies publication to start me off on Excel 2007. I was familiar with 2003, but 2007 with its "ribbon" threw me off because the commands were in different places. Plus there are some new bells and whistles for 2007. I needed to finish a project for work and figure out ways I could work within the security/systems constraints and this book did it for me. Most of the other books didn't have enough detail to solve my problem. Not a perfect book and Excel and the other Office applications have gotten so sophisticated I don't think any book cover possible cover everything, but if you need to go beyond Dummies, consider this publication as an overall guide to assist you with Excel 2007.

Excel purchase 5 by .. Philip M. Owens (Anchorage, AK)

Denty, (Philip M Owens)

Better than Jelen for Minutae 4 by .. Brews (Tucson, AZ)
To parallel my review of "Special Edition: Using Excel 2007", let me consider the same examples.

1. Cursor motion: complete discussion on p. 136 under Data Entry: no reference in the index, however.
2. File properties: not discussed, but correct information given in the "Menu to Ribbon Command Reference, Appendix A" p. 909
3. Single data point label on a chart: Procedure on p. 624
4. Setting Maximum Iterations and Maximum Change for Goal Seek: p. 601
5. How to access Solver once installed: p. 603

So all these annoying omissions in "Special Edition" are corrected here. That leads me to think this book is preferable to "Special Edition" for many minutae.

However, its index is not great, and many topics are given only short discussion. For example, the discussion of "Naming a Formula" (p. 448) is only a paragraph, while Jelen has a five-page discussion with several examples to show its utility (pp. 857-862).

Excellent reference for VBA in an Excel setting. Expect to get many years service from this book.

Nice information 3 by .. JC ()
I am a novice to VBA and this is the first book I have purchased on the subject. It has alot of useful information. However, it skims so briefly over many topics. If you have a good grasp of VBA and what it can do, I think this is a nice reference. For someone like me, who is just starting, there is probably something better out there.

Excel 2007 5 by .. J. Vaught (San Francisco, CA)
I use this book everyday, easy to understand, easy to use. My spread sheets look just as good if not better than those in my work place that do this everyday. I am just slower, but who would know.

Teach Yourself Visually Excel 2007 5 by .. Ann Stephens (Ashland, Oregon USA)
For those of us who lack computer savvy, a book like this is an essential. Personally I learn much better if I can read text AND look at a picture. Never really having done a spread sheet before, I learned in no time at all. I keep the book right by my computer. I have found all the 'Visually' books to be helpful

Publisher : Pogue Press

Product Description

Microsoft Excel continues to grow in power, sophistication, and capability, but one thing that has changed very little since the early '90s is its user interface. The once-simple toolbar has been packed with so many features over the years that few users know where to find them all. Microsoft has addressed this problem in Excel 2007 by radically redesigning the user interface with a tabbed toolbar that makes every feature easy to locate and use. Unfortunately, Microsoft's documentation is as scant as ever, so even if users can find advanced features, they probably won't know what to do with them.

Excel 2007: The Missing Manual covers the entire gamut of how to build spreadsheets, add and format information, print reports, create charts and graphics, and use basic formulas and functions. Like its siblings in the Missing Manual series, this book crackles with a fine sense of humor and refreshing objectivity about its subject, guiding readers through the new Excel with clear explanations, step-by-step instructions, lots of illustrations, and friendly, time-saving advice. It's a perfect primer for small businesses with no techie to turn to, as well as those who want to organize household and office information.

Great Resource 4 by .. E. Hetfield (North Carolina)
This is great for tips and special uses. It is also great for people upgrading from older versions of Office to find out where things have moved or how they are done in 2007.

Excel-lent book 5 by .. B. Whitt (Columbus, GA USA)
I love these Missing Manuals for Excel. The descriptions are written in a clear conversational tone, and the examples are easy to follow. I use Excel for basic list and schedule making, to type notes for college, to calculate statistics for my tennis team, and for different finance calculations and reports at work. Sometimes the help function that comes with Excel is sufficient for quick questions, but for more complicated use and/or plainer explanations, I prefer the book to the help function. I have the manuals for both Excel 2003 and 2007, and the manuals are not interchangeable for the two versions. Whichever version of Excel you use, whether you want to look up basic how-to's, do complicated computations, or get into the bells and whistles, I would recommend the Missing Manual.

Excellent book 5 by .. Sandra Peele (North Carolina)
Pro: This is the third Missing Manual book I've bought. The thing I appreciate most about all the Missing Manual books is the rigorous QA that ensures the reader will not be frustrated by errors. This is a clear, easy-to-follow, informative book. I highly recommend it.

Con: The book's "Get Satisfaction" feedback website is poor. I was not able to leave a suggestion there, so I'll put in here.

These are my suggestions: 1) Replace "Get Satisfaction" with a better feedback tool and 2) in the file name of "Missing CD" files, include a reference to the figure in the book. That will make it easier to use the CD examples along with studying the book.

coming to grips with EXCEL 2007 new interface 4 by .. Jacques I. Grenot (Sydney Australia)
As an 'old' EXCEL user, I needed a comprehensive guide to the new User Interface and features. And I got more, EXCELlent value!
Jacques

Very Good, But Lost By a Hair to Excel 2007 Bible... 4 by .. A Work In Progress (Maryland)
Excel 2007 Missing Manual is a very good book that serves as a valuable resource for beginning as well as intermediate users. The author does a good job of reviewing the improvements of 2007 as well as exploring many uses of the program. However, Excel 2007 Bible covered a tad more information, hence, the 4 star review for this book. Though I must admit that this is still a very good resource for beginner's as well as intermediate users.

book is good but program is a microsoft price gouge 3 by .. George W. Towle ()
the 2007 programs create major problems in business organizations that have massive files in the 2003 version. the cost to convert is astronomical in comparison with the minor cost of the microsoft product.

EXCEL 2007 3 by .. AEF (OHIO)
I have several of these books on different subjects and although it is a good training or reference book, I would have preferred VISUALS as they are much easier for me to follow. What I like about the DUMMY line, is the reading material is in simple terms and not that WAY OUT THERE technical terms that I doubt the real computer geeks even understand.

Useful but... 3 by .. Earth Colony (Marina Del Rey CA)
The section on financial formulas contains some horribly incorrect information (totally wrong on NPV interpretation) and for some reason skips a description of IRR - one of the most used financial functions. Otherwise a good introduction to Excel 2007.

Not Useful 2 by .. Tango Static (San Jose, CA)
I bought the book to do a spreadsheet for a new business. The author assumes I am already well versed in Excel, but at this point, I hadn't used Excel for about 6 years. Maybe I should not have purchsed this book, as the author covers topics not useful to me. I would think that business modeling allows one to do a spread sheet and do sensitivity analysis, as to which items are major cost drivers. This is obvious by inspection. Excel also allows one to do pie charts and bar charts.

The author gets into present value calculations and internal rate of returns but there is better software for this. He includes a disk but it wasn't obvious to me which files to open.

This book would be better used in a finance class. It's not for the user who needs some quick help.

There is lots of material in this book, but its usefullness, for me, was minimal.

Best, Most Practical Book in the Field 5 by .. DJ ()

Winston is a guru in his field and it shows in this book, which tackles all the necessary tools you will need "on the job" and does so in a rich, but easy to understand language.

At times, you will feel that the author is coaching you all along, right over your shoulder.

an amzing book that I reference at least once a week, this book is must-own for anyone who wants to model business decisions & stand out among your peers

Microsoft Office Excel 2007: Data Analysis and Business Modeling 4 by .. Bob Clark (Oregon)
Huge improvement over past Excel manuals because this financial analyst can actually understand the steps being described.

Great Overview of the Power of Excel 2007 5 by .. Hop (Dallas, TX USA)
I'll start by saying I'm biased: I believe Excel 2007 is awesome. So, this book is a great reference for how to get more out of a great tool. I've been to Wayne's seminars, adn his book is a great substitute for his classroom knowledge and experience. THe examples are highly practical, and his data samples on the included CD make learning how to use the functions a lot easier. Love the basketball and baseball stat examples!

Achieving "Application Specialist" Excel Know-How 5 by .. Thomas J. Schriber (Ann Arbor, MI USA)
Three cheers for this book and the other Thomson/Course Technology "Comprehensive" books addressing various applications in Microsoft Office 2007 (and, earlier, in Office 2003, etc.). The books are designed for successful use (either on a self-study basis, or in formal courses) on the part of those who, starting with no prior knowledge, want to bring themselves up to a skill level corresponding to what Microsoft terms "Microsoft Certified Application Specialist." Here are some of the distinguishing features of this Excel 2007 book:

(1) The book makes effective use of color, including frequent and well annotated screen shots.

(2) The book presents material in a highly readable, step by step way. (This might be a disadvantage for fast-track users of the book who do not need or want that much "hand holding," but it does mean that just about any motivated person who works conscientiously with the book can achieve success.)

(3) Each of the 12 chapters is set in the context of a "case" providing meaningful settings within which the application potential of Excel is brought into focus, usually in a "business-related" way. (This contrasts with some books that describe "how to do this" and "how to do that," but might lack motivation for WHY it might be of interest to be able to do this or do that.) Peripheral benefit: the book provides an informal introduction to some aspects of business, in the sense of extracting information from data to provide insights and perhaps support fundamental decision making.

(4) Each chapter concludes with a set of five exercises or "cases," starting with an exercise in which the reader is asked to extend the material developed in the body of the chapter. Starting-point workbooks for these exercises (and for the case presented in the body of the chapter itself) can be downloaded from the publisher's website. Workbook "solutions" for the cases can be downloaded by instructors using the book in a course setting. (Although some of the exercises include "explore" steps, the exercises do largely tend to take a "follow the bouncing ball" approach, which helps the user ease into the material but probably falls short for fast-track users who might want to be challenged to be more creative in applying the material, i.e., "Here's a situation, and here's the information that is to be developed in this situation. Starting from scratch and using your own wits entirely, develop the information. No step by step approach is provided for your use. You're on your own. Go to it!"

(5) The book is certified by Microsoft as containing the Excel material that, when mastered, puts the user in a position to pass Microsoft's "Certified Application Specialist" exam. This certification, in turn, can be a valuable resume' entry for some people in the workforce. (Ditto for similar certifications for Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Access, and so on.)

(6) There is a companion book ("Casegrader," by Crews and Murphy, ISBN 978-1-4239-9823-5) consisting of twelve "cases" integrated with the Excel material presented in the corresponding chapters in the Parsons, Oja, Auer, and Carey book. After developing the workbook for a Crews and Murphy case, the workbook can be uploaded to a website for automatic scoring, with a step by step analysis and report produced as a result. (The Crews and Murphy cases fall into the "follow the bouncing ball" category, but have the virtue of forcing use of the Parsons et al. material after the material has been studied. In my opinion, Parsons et al. and Crews and Murphy are best used together in this sequence: (a) Study a Parsons et al. chapter. (b) Do the corresponding Crews and Murphy case, keeping at it until you score 100% on it. (c) Do at least two of the Parsons et al. exercises at the end of the chapter. (d) Proceed to the next Parsons et al. chapter, etc.)

All best wishes for success to users of Parsons et al.

Great Learning and Teaching Tool! 5 by .. Ronnie Henley ()
This product is great for anyone wanting to increase their working knowledge of Excel and especially for those who do not have time to go to a class. Being a trainer, I will use this book to teach others in my profession. Being able to download the ready-made files for tutorial reviews and case problems helps the student to progressive try all the techniques taught. I highly recommend it!
