Very Basic 2 by .. M. Morris (Seattle WA United States)
I just read this book but skipped a lot of it. It's very basic and doesn't get into depth on any one subject. It covers customer targeting, marketing, basic HTML, basic search engine info, etc. If you know nothing about web sites and nothing about business, it might be worth checking it out at the library but I wouldn't pay for the book. Just when you get some information on a subject, the author moves on to something else. A book with a wide scope should be much longer than this so it can flesh out some of the details.

Excellent book 4 by .. E. Brainard (Illinois, USA)
I bought this book for my son who is a grad student and has recently started investing online. He has been reading it and said it was a very thorough book and explains a lot of things about investing in stocks.

Great Advice for Beginners 5 by .. Kristina Zullo ()
As a student still struggling to learn the importance and benefits of investing, reading this book helped me to understand how investments can really help you in the future. The author provides many different ways of investing online and helps give ideas as to which method of investment is best suited for you.
In this book, the author provides examples and case studies of real people who have taken part in one of the many possible ways of investing, and the outcome of their investments. I feel that these case studies were very helpful to me, and could be very helpful to any other reader as well.
I found this book to be very resourceful, informative, and useful in discussing and comparing the different ways of investing to help you decide which is best suited for you. I recommend it to anyone looking for a detailed description, and detailed examples of each of these investments.

Good Starting Point 4 by .. Mary Ellis (Sierra Foothills, CA USA)
This book gives you an understandable overview of investing. It is written in simple English and defines all the terminology used in the book.

No one book can really define the entire spectrum of investing but this book touches on enough items to help you decide what to research next.

I was impressed with the completeness and attention to detail. Both the beginning investor and the seasoned pro could use this book. As a reference book I will be referring to this one many times as I work my way into the world of online investing.

Like having your own personal financial advisor 4 by .. K. Black (Marshalltown, Iowa)
"The Complete Guide to Online Investing" by Michelle Hooper is just what it claims to be. From beginners to seasoned professionals, the information Hooper has collected and put into one volume is impressive. Though some professionals may know, or think they know, everything in the book, it is still worth a look. Some may learn something new. Others will find their memory on key concepts and ideas refreshed.

The first chapter, "What is Investing?" lists nearly every type of investment that most people can make. From stocks and bonds to real estate investment trusts, it is all covered here. Though the first section has little to do with the online part of investing, it does give a great overview and background for new investors. Hooper expands on this information, or suggest ways to put it to practical use, in subsequent chapters.

The next couple of chapters explain what types of investments a person can make and the places where they can invest. It provides a great overview of investment strategies and reviews key terms that many beginning investors may not be familiar with, but the investing community already assumes everyone knows.

The heart of the book really begins in chapter 4, which gives a great overview of various financial and trading Web sites. Helpful navigational tools are provided with most of the Web sites reviewed, as well as a brief discussion on what information or tools it may provide. In addition, it discusses some Web sites offering very helpful and fun applications, such as investment calculators, for those who want to dream.

Those who are interested in reviews of online brokers, both full service and discount, and reviews of other online services will not be disappointed. In addition to listing the advantages and steps needed to get started on these Web sites, Hooper also explains how to make sure a broker is reputable. There is also a helpful section on scams. Those wanting to check out a variety of firms will also find dozens listed, along with their Web site addresses.

Replete with a significant number of personal stories, case studies and tips, Hooper writes in a very personable and conversational tone. Discussing Johnson & Johnson, at one point she notes, "Those guys make everything, and it is important that people have deodorants." That folksy style is refreshing in the financial book market, which often discusses things most would need a doctorate degree to understand.

There are some portions of the book structured awkwardly. For example, the first chapter is 90 pages long. That may seem rather intimidating to readers who are used to breaking up their reading by chapters. However, there are numerous subsections and subheads, which help break the information up into digestible chunks.

The stories she relates are relevant to the subject matter she is discussing, demonstrating how there are practical applications for the ideas she is discussing. The success stories mentioned also offer encouragement to potential investors. "The Complete Guide to Online Investing" offers everything a beginning investor could want.

Fire Up Your Computers--Here's Everything You Need to Know About Online Investing 5 by .. Margaret T. McGowan (Schenectady, NY)
This "how-to" book of the ins and outs of online investing should appear prominently on the bookshelf of anyone who is serious about making money in the stock market. It contains a wealth of information that runs the gamut from the history of laws governing trading to an account of investing strategies, including after-hours trading, managing your investment portfolio, recognizing a bad broker, as well as information regarding tax deductions for investment newsletters and even computers used for investing! But it would be advisable to check with your tax accountant before attempting to take these deductions on your tax returns. Hooper's exhaustible research for this book is obvious in the many charts, case studies, and websites included for further reference.

The book is written in a very straightforward and accessible style, even when dealing with more dense topics such as futures and commodities trading. Hooper explains that "A long call is simply purchasing a call option in which the investor hopes that the price of the futures market will rise." In addition, Hooper uses humor to make certain points. When discussing trading of currencies, Hooper warns "Do not get up and take a break or you could lose a large sum of money", and in describing the "Fill or Kill" request, Hooper notes that this "does not mean that the broker will be killed if an order is not filled." Books on topics such as this are often exceedingly technical and difficult to read but Hooper has really lived up to the title of this book The Complete Guide to Online Investing: Everything You Need to Know Explained Simply.

Every day, millions of users log on to their favorite online forums and interact with others to get advice and discuss everything from the latest news and trends to their hobbies to their professions to whatever else strikes their fancy. Administrators have to lead these communities, deal with difficult users, and choose moderators. Legal constraints, spammers, and technical issues can turn the excitement of running an online community into chaos. With the right guidance, however, running forums can be a pleasure. Patrick O'Keefe has spent years developing and managing online communities. Now, he shows readers how to make the right decisions about every aspect of their forums, including:

choosing a name and domain name * picking the right software * deciding on user options like avatars and private messaging * setting guidelines and dealing with violators * ensuring that posts stay on topic * settling online disputes among users * involving their users and keeping the site interesting Managing Online Forums is the one book that shows site owners and administrators how to create a safe and entertaining community that users will return to again and again.

Recommended read for new and experienced forum developers 5 by .. Martin Reed ()
One of the things I love about this book is the way it doesn't claim there is only `one right way' of doing things. Patrick will tell you what he recommends, and then he will tell you why. Very often though, he will also give you advice even if you decide not to follow his recommendations. Although he says you shouldn't have a feedback forum for example, he still gives advice on how to manage one if you decide to ignore his recommendation and include one anyway.

Even if you have years of experience behind you, I challenge you not to find value in this book. The `Managing your staff' chapter was one of my favourite chapters of the book - it explains how to communicate with your staff, how to lead, how to moderate a forum and includes a wealth of templates. It even includes a `Situations Guide' to ensure your staff know how to respond to breaches of your rules or guidelines.

Another favourite chapter of the book for me was, `Banning users and dealing with chaos'. Sometimes it is great to be reminded that you are not alone when it comes to dealing with problematic members and the book gives solid advice on how to deal with these types of users.

I would highly recommend this book to everyone involved in managing online forums. The chapters on managing staff and dealing with abusive users are worth the price of the book alone, and that's before you even consider the value of all the included templates.

This book is full of solid, specific advice. There are no `wishy washy' suggestions here - just solid advice and battle-tested solutions to the challenges that face managers of online forums.

For novices and experts alike, especially professional and aspiring community managers 5 by .. Jessica Smith (Washington, DC)
Managing Online Forums: Everything You Need to Know to Create and Run Successful Community Discussion Boards
Managing Online Forums is great for anyone that is tasked or would like to be tasked with managing any kind of online community. Whether it's a membership forum, a mom's group, or a company's community around a brand, this book is one that can and will be referenced on a regular basis.

This book will appeal to complete novices and experts alike. The book is written so that someone just starting an online forum can move through the book step-by-step to set-up, design, and get a forum running in no time. Someone who has an existing forum will appreciate the chapters on keeping your members active, monetization, and dealing with trolls.

"Managing Online Forums" is the kind of book you'll keep handy after you read it to refer back to again and again. My favorite chapters were the ones about setting guidelines and rules. Obviously, freedom of speech is important but so is the safety and morale of your members. Patrick is very good at addressing your questions just as they surface when reading through the book. The information and knowledge is organized in such a way that the reader will continuously build on what they've already done. Patrick's advice is practical and easy-to-understand.

Manage Social Networks 5 by .. Brad A. Williams ()
This is a great book by a well respected and knowledgeable member of many communities across the web! Patrick is also my friend, and we are both Advisors on SitePoint Forums.

Patrick breaks down every aspect of community management including developing community guidelines, promoting your community, managing forum staff, dealing with bad members and chaos, and how to make money from your community.

My favorite chapter of the book is one of the more sensitive subjects, Banning Users and Dealing with Chaos. One of the quickest ways to lose control of a community is to handle chaos incorrectly. Patrick does a great job of giving real world community examples and solid solutions on how to handle each.

Another great chapter is Developing Guidelines. I've started more than a few communities, and not once have I stopped to think about my communities guidelines before launching. Not only does Patrick go into great detail on what type of guidelines you should have, but he also provides a blank guideline template section demonstrating exactly how he lays out his guidelines for reference.

I really enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it to anyone, beginner and expert alike, that is interested in increasing their knowledge on community management.

Nice job Patrick!

How to Care for a Lively Online Community 5 by .. Kare Anderson (Sausalito, CA)
Why do Yankee fans flock to their favorite online community, YanksBlog? Perhaps, it's because they feel welcomed and supported, as you would want to be at the site for your passionate interest. Patrick O'Keefe is a gracious and savvy host for this avid baseball fans. He manages several communities including PhotoshopForums, KarateForums and BadBoyForums.

Like Augie Ray, he can help you decide whether to join or build a community. Now, would you like to launch and manage a lively online forum for people who share your favorite interest? And perhaps make money? Or become more adept at most any type of social interaction online? Then listen in as O'Keefe, the author of Managing Online Forums, describes how to jumpstart and care for a lively, growing community online.

*Work from anywhere.

* Host a popular place for people who share your interest to gather.

From mothering to scuba diving, managers of some of the largest online forums rave about O'Keefe's advice. Hear how powerful a community can become, ways to set up a community and a content site, mediate squabbling members, develop guidelines and promote your community.

As you can tell I am a fan of this generous community-building expert and his book. As both O'Keefe and Peter Block suggest, what makes communities work online is the same as in face-to-face time - -it is the sense of belonging.

Much needed advice for those who run online communities 5 by .. Manny Hernandez (Bay Area, CA)
As many online forums as there are, sadly there are only very few titles out there that deal with the topic. Until now, the best one (now out of print) was Design for Community. But Patrick O'Keefe has changed this for good with this amazingly comprehensive title that is packed with great (and fairly timeless) advice about how to start, develop, promote and manage your online community. Two chapters at the end deal with tips on how to keep your online forum interesting and how to monetize it.

Personally, the only downside I found in the book is that it has a very heavy emphasis on forums (phpBB, more specifically), leaving outside some of the aspects specific to social media. However, the knowledge that the author has included in here can be relatively easily ported to help folk wanting to manage social networks or other social applications.

As for me, I am getting a copy of the book for each of the Administrators in my communities.

Lots of Links But Little Substance 3 by .. ()
I was disappointed by this book, which I received as a gift from my daughter-in-law. Sure, there are lots of web links, but there's not a lot of substance for me. I suppose that for someone who is just starting to search for genealogy information on the Internet it's a good starting point. But I'd send them to Cyndi's List and that's free.

A MUST HAVE FOR ANY GENEOLOGIST'S LIBRARY 5 by .. ()
What a wonderful geneology tool. The author takes you step by step through the various resources available to geneologists. It is ideal for the beginning geneologist but also contains helpful information for even the most seasoned researcher. This is a must have for any geneologist's library.

Great Price! For beginners in Genealogy and the Internet! 4 by .. ()
If you are a beginner you will especially like this book since it starts with the quite elementary genealogical research information. If you are an experienced genealogist, you may find the book a bit "Junior" though, I found some links I didn't already know about. If you are always looking for a few more genealogical web sites, this book is worth the "LOW PRICE" asked for here!

**note: Was a little disappointed to see that there were no Italian genealogical links or information offered!

ISBN-10: 0071496432
ISBN-13: 978-0071496438

Strengths: The book is very readable but are a little lackluster in terms of visuals. Book simplifies tutorials but included in-depth information. This book has a nice objective oriented listing in the inside cover of the front cover page as well as a nice website resources listing on the inside of the back cover. The Chapters are well thought out and and have easy to read numbered tutorials. Good solid information for both Macintosh and PC/Windows users was well done. The index is well written. A nicely written resources listing and more are included on the inside back page.

Weaknesses: The book has only black/white text which makes the chapters a little drab. There a few screenshots and they don't have screen pointers or anything else within these to explain how to use hardware or software. The weaknesses are mainly cosmetic in terms of the sequencing of the chapters depending upon whether you are novice, intermediate or advanced user.

Rating: 5/5

Introduction

A book that shows you how to shoot professional-quality videos has to demonstrate how to edit files, prepare clips for posting online, and then provide solid information about sharing video projects via blogs, websites, and podcasts. If you are looking for a book to meet these needs, then the book How to Do Everything with Online Video is a nice one to buy.

The author, Andrew Shalat is a designer, writer, author, and is the coauthor of CNET Do-It-Yourself Mac Projects.
Hands-on tutorials for the easiest and best video editing software for use on PCs and Macs are included.

This 270 page book has 12 chapters, a nice index but no glossary of terms, which would have been nice. The inside front cover has a real nice listing of 25 objectives that tell how the book can help you and what you can learn. These 12 chapters are packed with useful information. These include starting off with ; Shooting videos; editing your video; uploading your videos (including using YouTube, embedding websites, myspace, your own web pages and launching Vodcasts with iTunes); understanding and working with "tags" and using them with Google (another great part was emailing your tags through network sites) ; film school in a book; telling a story; storyboarding (very well thought out) ; information concerning directing your video; basic editing with either Adobe Premier Pro, Final Cut Express HD and/or iMovie O8 and finishing your video had good solid information.

While I have dabbled with YouTube, the book let me know more of my potential.

What I particularly liked is his information about adding audio tracks, nice converting and embedding a video to a flash video ( including some interesting codes to use), extending my utilization of tags with Google and more. Eventhough I have created and sold videos, I found more "food for thought".

Conclusion

The black on white text and the lack of color within the chapter makes things a little dull. The author explains how to use the hardware and software information but also includes specific helpful techniques concerning what kinds of videos to create with videos. However I really don't like the order in which the chapters are sequenced. Novice and possibly intermediate video users, especially those trying to learn new techniques, should start with Chapter 2 and then Chapter 5- 8. If you want to get to the heart of working with software, for either Mac or PC users , you should start with Chapter 10 or 11.

The screenshots will not explain visually how to use YouTube especially if you run into a little trouble. But what I have found YouTube is not that difficult to use and this book can help start and master using the Video editing and sharing capabilities. If you need more information another book may suffice.

There are few pages for YouTube utilization but that might be enough to get your started as it is fairly easy to use except for more complex techniques. As a confirmed Macintosh user, I like that the author included information about iMovieHD as well as the new version iMovie 8. There are advantages or disadvantages and reasons for using either/or or both of these iMovie versions, The author includes a section about the compositional use of video involving "the rule of thirds" , This was really nice as I found this idea this technique only used for photography. It is "little" specific gems, like this, that are integrated throughout the chapters and really make this book a very useful one for learning about working with video in several ways.

In short, this book is "crammed" with good solid information. This book will not only have you " up and running " in no time but also help you in your improvement of your YouTube movies, ideas and creativity or enhance skills your already possess.
