Better 4 by .. Jacqueline Lee Hembree (arlington, wa)
At least better than etiquette for dummies. Perhaps I just make a better idiot though. I loved the pictures.

Broad enough for us Idiots 4 by .. Kenneth Brewster (King Cove, Alaska)
For those who feel this Guide dwells too much on the "obvious" to the detriment of the comprehensive, I might recommend something like the dictionary-size Emily Post's book of Etiquette. But I grew up in the working-class American culture (think trailer parks, country music lyrics, and "po' white trash"). I've made very serious social blunders not knowing unstated "rules" that many (most?) middle-class people believe to be "obvious". Two college degrees did not teach me these rules. Praise God for the Complete Idiot's Guide to Etiquette, which explains the "obvious" with sympathy and clarity.

Not Nearly Broad Enough 2 by .. SuperVestor (Sugar Land, TX United States)
I was hoping for a reference that would help me in occasional events where I don't feel comfortable with the "social rules". I've had this book for over a year and, way too often, it doesn't answer the questions that come up. The dining guide is good. Otherwise, it's pretty incomplete. If you're new to the American culture and are looking for basics, this is probably ok. Otherwise, find something with much better breadth.

Absolutely Essential! 5 by .. (Gibsonia, PA United States)
This is a wonderful book and essential for anyone who cares how they present themselves to others. Etiquette is a dying art that definately needs a comeback. Email and answering machines have killed the personal written letter and thank you notes. For those of you that think a thank you via email is appropriate, you definately need to buy this book!!!

Worth every penny!

A Good Practical Guide 4 by .. Mei-Ling (USA)
I found this book to be quite thorough while maintaining an interesting and friendly style. Etiquette is still very important in our rather relaxed, modern lifestyles. It is not only for the elite, it if for everyone. It helps us to respect ourselves and others. This guide will help you understand and practice proper etiquette and feel far more comfortable and at ease in almost any social setting. My only misgiving was that it was very American focused (most understandable considering it is an American publication). However, whether you are American or English, there is something here for everyone.

interesting and practical 5 by .. Szendile (Hungary)
I really enjoyed reading this book, I found it useful. It uses a practical approach to meetings and negotiations in China, I mean it not only says "do that" and "don't do that" like other books on etiquette but explains it with concret examples and situations, so one can prepare well on how to behave in certain situations.

This is The Second Step In A Journey of 1000 Miles 4 by .. China Maven (Seattle, WA)
I liked Chinese Business Etiquette: A Guide to Protocol, Manners, and Culture in the People's Republic of China a lot. I'm trying to get up speed real quickly on doing business in China. I think of it as a 1000 Mile journey. The first book The Gods of Business I read got me about 500 miles down the road real quick. It gave me the basics of the country's religion and their approach to business. After that I read this book and then read (Doing Business in China For Dummies (For Dummies (Business & Personal Finance))) each of which added another 250 miles of knowledge.

Great Guide to Chinese Culture 5 by .. William Kerney (San Diego, CA)
This book contains very useful information about Chinese Culture -- it's not at all just for business people, but for anyone who wants to understand the culture... or at least try to not stick their foot in their mouth when interacting with Chinese people.

Whenever I surprise my Chinese fiancee by knowing something about Chinese Culture (like the seating arrangements at a banquet), most of the time it was learned from this book. I can't rate it highly enough.

nice review 4 by .. Joseph Pickering (Delaware, USA)
Haven't finished the book, yet. But so far, it seems to be worthwhile.

Rich in cultural anecdotes but lacking in the big picture 4 by .. Dave Twain (Wayzata, MN USA)
To be sure, with its rich Chinese cultural anecdotes and the author's vivid writing style, this book is not only useful in helping the reader understand unique Chinese concepts like Guanxi, Mianzi and Lijie but also an entertaining read - suitable for business travelers.

However, after reading Wei Wang's The China Executive, I realize that Seligman has not been right on "the single most important and fundamental difference between Chinese and Westerners". On pages 44-47 of Chinese Business Etiquette, Seligman says that this is the difference between the "individualism" of Westerners and the "group-centeredness" of the Chinese. (Of course, Seligman is not alone in getting this wrong; since the publication of Geert Hofstede's Culture's Consequences in 1980, this Western individualism-Chinese collectivism dichotomy has become the most widely-talked assumption in almost every book on China business including the authoritative Harvard Business Review on Doing Business in China).

To elaborate on Seligman (page 45), "[In China,] matters are often debated at great length until agreement is reached on a course of action. Once a decision has been made, however, individual group members are expected to fall in line, embrace it, and act on it, and nobody presumes to question it, at least overtly."

Now, the reality is that, with nearly a hundred million dollars invested in China, one of the biggest complaints our expats have against local staff is the latter's inability to follow a pre-agreed course of action or plan. In addition, the Chinese do not like group discussions, not to mention "debates at great length"; most of them like to remain quiet rather than actively voice their opinions. Also, if the Chinese were group-centered, their state-owned enterprises would have been so successful that multinationals have stood little chance to compete with them - but the very opposite is true (most state-owned enterprises cannot be closed down fast enough because they are "a pile of sand")!

According to Wei Wang in his book The China Executive, "group and individual are the two sides of the same coin; one cannot exist without the other", and therefore Westerners actually exhibit dual individualism-collectivism. And the heart of human relationships in China is human feelings. In other words, Chinese and Westerners do not represent two poles of the same individualism-collectivism continuum.

In addition, "there is a limit to learning the Chinese way," says Wang. "There are things that you need to go about the Chinese way but there are also things that you need to go about the Western way - otherwise, you lose the purpose of going there in the first place."

To understand why and, more important, its profound implications for China business or indeed business in the China era (including management, leadership, strategy and worldview), you have to read The China Executive.

Slim volume provides a good overview... 3 by .. Arleen (Fayetteville, NC United States)
... but does not contain enough detail to be truly useful to someone getting ready to travel to India. About half the book is taken up with geography and history information that is readily available in other sources. Cultural awareness tips are scattered throughout, but I wouldn't feel comfortable heading to the subcontinent armed only with the hints contained here. This book is probably best suited for armchair travelers.

The help you need to do the right thing in a difficult situation

Grieving the loss of a loved one, friend or colleague is an important process--one that can be made unnecessarily awkward if you’re not familiar with the religious tradition in which the grieving takes place, and end up feeling uncertain about how to behave. You want to be sure that you know what to do and what to expect. There’s no need to enter an unfamiliar atmosphere unprepared, wondering:

Are flowers appropriate? Is there anything I need to avoid doing or saying? What does this faith believe about death? What should I wear? What is the appropriate behavior if viewing the body?

The Perfect Stranger’s Guide to Funerals and Grieving Practices helps to solve these mysteries and many more, telling you everything you need to know to avoid embarrassment, express your condolences in an appropriate way, and do the right thing in a difficult situation.

Help to navigate the cultural and religious maze at death 5 by .. bhoy@griefcompass.com (Seal Beach, CA)
In 38 brief chapters, the editor profiles major (and minor) religious groups across North America. He includes the biggies like Baptists, Catholics, and Jews, of course, but he also includes the lesser-known groups like Hindu, Christian Science, Jehovah's Witness, and Bahai.

Each chapter introduces the reader to the history and belief system of the group and then details funeral ceremony practices, burial or cremation rites, ideas about appropriate dress, gifts, and flowers, and suggestions for caring for the bereaved family during and after the funeral. I've seen most of the books on funeral customs in different religious groups. This is a real gem--and the best book like it on the market!

Cute and informitive 4 by .. Pepperment ()
This book was pretty cute and it was informative. As a Cultural Anthropologist, the best I can say is that this book sort of gives a personality if you will to different countries. To me however, it does seem a little outdated. I think that is you are new to the Cultural Anthropologist scene though this is a good book to start with. It gives you a taste of some really interesting cultures in our world.

not completley accurate 2 by .. Eva L. Hallgren (FL)
I am Swedish and bought this book as a present for a friend.
The book is cute, but after I read a story about manhole covers in my country that I, nor any of my Swedish friends ever heard of, I'm getting suspicious that there may be stories in other countries that aren't true.

Handy little book 4 by .. K. Fulton (Colorado)
This is a handy little book, especially if you're going to several different countries. You can learn a little about each. Though I think it may need some updating... it talks about shillings in the Austria section, but I read on the internet that they went to the Euro in 2002. The 1st Edition I bought from the store doesn't have a publishing date on it, but the date for the 1st Edition according to Amazon is 2005. So you'd think that it would be updated. The Italy section talks about Euros...

Interesting but sparse 3 by .. Reid Rivenburgh ()
This is an interesting book to read. It gives you insight into various cultures. But it's not a good investment if you're going to a single country listed in the book and want to use this as a serious aid. Each country is given 2-3 pages of information covering handshakes, what to wear, gifts, etc. It's good to know, but it's a fairly shallow treatment; I'd prefer many pages of regular print rather than the glossy presentation here. Still, it makes for a quick, fun read if you're into this sort of thing.

Very interesting little book. 5 by .. Blitz Patel (Napa, CA, USA)
Has lots of true facts about a handfull of different countries.

Great for busy travelers and those studying lean manufacturing 5 by .. Kate and Mike (Madbury, NH)
Ok, travelers, will focus on you, but will also add some commentary for those seeking DNA elements of the Toyota Production System ("TPS", also known as "lean manufacturing").

I am busy at home and work, so when a business trip to Japan was suggested, I wanted a brief, yet comprehensive book on basic etiquette. This author not only achieves both these aims, but also describes "why" customs and such are the way there are... knowing the "why" makes the "how" easier to do correctly, no matter how foreign (or contradictory) something might appear.

Pro:
-Brief, yet surprisingly comprehensive, details not only "how" things work, but the "why" as well
-Awkward miscues (i.e. the whole bowing and shaking hands when exchanging business cards thing) and contradictory/confusing behaviors (e.g. friendly when one-on-one in the evening, but cold and distant the next day at work) finally explained!
-Historical notes of where things came from was interesting as a traveler and practitioner of lean manufacturing as well... helps explain some of those little things that make TPS so hard to translate into a functional system in the West

Con:
-None observed, and I pride myself on finding at least one observation to add balance to my reviews (and to build reviewing/observations skills as well)

Bottom line: HIghly recommended for travelers. I think it is also a must read for passionate lean zealots.

Be prepared before you go! 5 by .. A. Schmidt (Eugene, Oregon)
My daughter was going to Japan to spend several weeks with her boyfriends family. I figured she needed some help in the subtle manners that would prepare her to be the best guest she could. It makes for great reading on a long flight! She felt that there were many bits of information that really helped her. Going to Japan with a local is extremely advantagous, but sometimes they forget the details. Lots of good info.

excellent for students and businessman alike 5 by .. ramen (Sacramento, CA)
excellent advice for anybody that is going to Japan and doesn't want to offend their local hosts or friends.

Better work on your bow! 5 by .. Michael K. Smith (Gonzales, Louisiana)
In Japan, as visiting foreigners keep discovering -- if they're paying proper attention -- "etiquette" means a great deal more than simply knowing which knife and fork to use. (Or, in this case, what not to do with your chopsticks.) Japan has been a deeply and subtly ritualized and mannered society for millennia, and even with the postwar easing of some rituals and the introduction and acceptance of certain Westernisms -- and even though the Japanese are generally tolerant of minor faux pas on the part on non-Japanese -- the foreign visitor still needs to be very aware of the expectations of those around him. However, this book is also an excellent source for the non-visitor who simply has an interest in Japanese society and culture. The author has been both a periodic resident and been otherwise closely involved with Japan for going on six decades, and he's also a very observant and thoughtful writer, which makes him an ideal guide for the westerner on all things Japanese. He not only tells you what to do, what not to do, and what you can get away with, he provides the historical background, the psychological rationalization, which not even some Japanese are really aware of. This will help you to extrapolate your behavior in other situations, and will assist you toward an understanding of why the Japanese are the way they are. Those shallow-thinkers who consider the Japanese simply "inscrutable," alien, and beyond American understanding should definitely read this book.

Great 5 by .. Patty Sue ()
I ordered this book for my grandaughter who was moving to Okinawa. She said that it really helped her have an understanding of the culture etc.
