Excellent commentaries included, along with more maps, charts and relevent information to help you understand God's Word and His message to His children. OUTSTANDING STUDY BIBLE!! by .. John Wolf (San Francisco Bay Area, CA)
This Bible has it all! Color Maps, charts, good study notes, detailed outlines, a handy concordance, cross refs, timelines, a mini Biblical Doctrine Overview (not a exhaustive systematic theology textbook), a mini guide to major religions and cults in the back, history of salvation in the OT verse guide in the back, and so so much more!! This is the most outstanding Bible I have ever used!
I previously owned the Reformation Study Bible but was not impressed with the study notes, and other helps in the book, so hopefully someone will buy that one. I also own a Zondervan NIV Study Bible which is quite nice and was previously the most advanced study Bible I had used.
My only gripe(s) about this Bible are as follows.
1. Text is in 1 column instead of the traditional 2 column format for Bibles.
2. Words of Christ are not in Red
3. Size
None of these gripes are enough to deduct a star, just hopefully CrossWay will also release a condensed ESV Study Bible and leave the rest of the stuff online, or for those wishing the bigger study Bible. The words of Christ NOT in red will take some time getting used too, but hence the advantage is that no one can read the Bible and argue that only Christs words are inspired.

This Bible is solid resource for anyone who wants to dig deeper into God's word. As a pastor, I immediately integrated this Bible into my weekly sermon prep. The text, graphics, maps, and tables are all stunning and extremely helpful, as are the study notes, which are practical and well written.
Concerning the binding; it seems very well made and I have not had any of the issues with "bunching" that is listed in other reviews. And I absolutely love the look and feel of the TruTone Brown cover. Highly recommended.
This is the first Bible I've owned in a long time that I just don't want to put down.

I guess I've become a collector of Bibles, as I now have several. Some are study Bibles while others just have the scriptures. I keep adding to my collection as I expand my translation horizons. With this Bible I believe I've found a work of art.
This Bible has maps, 200 of them throughout the book and not just in a section in the back. It has a cross-referenced concordance, it has notes as few other Bibles have. And the price is very reasonable.
It is hard to call this Bible, or any other for that matter, "definitive," but this one comes close. It raises the bar on study Bibles that few future producers and editors will be able to match. While one can say "scipture is scripture" this Bible pushes the creative envelope to new heights.
I guess what I'm trying to say is I really like this Bible and recommend it to any student of the Bible. The notes will aid in comprehension. In the past I've resorted to Bible handbooks to fulfill my quest for interpretive notes. This Bible has good notes throughout. Note that I still will use my handbooks, but this Bible enablesme to bring it to my Bible studies without needing to lug my handbooks along with me.
But this Bible, you will not be disappointed.

With all the recent flurry of news, updates and excitement regarding the forthcoming ESV Study Bible, I wanted to draw your attention to the other ESV Study Bible, The ESV Literary Study Bible and give you all six reasons why it will have a prominent place on my shelf, and why you should consider it as well.
1. Readability: The Literary Study Bible formats the text so that it reads like most other books, longer lines straight across the page. I have found that this makes reading the Bible at breadth easier, or at least more manageable. For class this past semester, I had to read through all of the Prophetical books and the Gospels. I tried reading them with my regular ESV, and then the Literary Study Bible, and found that what I read in the Literary Study Bible, I retained more readily and the effort seemed not as labor intensive.
2. Usefulness: The readability aids in its usefulness - as like most of us I'm sure our struggle is not in the reading of 1-2 paragraphs, but in entire books and sections of the Bible - but it has other features that make it more useful. The sections that begin every book lay out the main themes of the book, overall flow and structure, as well as your regular Bible introduction information. The 3-5 minute investment before each book really pays off, again in retention and in following the train of thought of the Biblical author. It really helps you as the reader understand what's going on, without giving you all the answers. Its a great tool for getting into the Bible yourself.
3. Leland and Philip Ryken: The father and son team on this Study Bible is certainly worth the price of the book. Both of these men bring a much needed emphasis on understanding the Bible with its literary aspects, as well as its theological, historical and moral aspects. It is not overstated to say that if you can understand the literary aspects of the text, then you are closer to the central message of the text, and the Ryken's bring this out in a way that is helpful, though not overdone.
4. Structure: In addition to the intro sections, each book features breaks in the text that lay out and help identify significant aspects of the upcoming text. This is absolutely great for gaining a sense of the overall argument or flow of a book.
5. The Ryken's: `Nuff said. But you should definitely check out the Leland Ryken article in the book Preach The Word. It alone is well worth the price of that book! I'll actually have something up on the blog about that book in a couple of weeks.
6. Literary Focus: I hinted at this already, but one of the most beneficial things I've learned while in seminary is to see and study the Bible within its literary dimensions. So often we take for granted that the Bible is a communication act where a human author wrote these pages to human audiences. Sure this was superintended by the Supreme Author, but we will fail to truly grasp the full force of the text if we never consider the literary dimensions involved in human communication that comprise the Bible. The ESV Literary Study Bible is an invaluable resource in assisting us as pastors and teachers of God's Word in gaining such an understanding, and that is why I will continue to use it even after the launch of the New ESV Study Bible coming out this Fall.
Wonderful translation, terrible printing/paper choices  by .. Dolly L. Caswell (Eagle River, Alaska, USA)
This translation of the Bible is wonderful, understandable, and as all of God's words are - life-giving, able "to save to the uttermost." That said, I am very disappointed with this particular printing process and how it was decided. This is supposed to be a STUDY BIBLE, which seems to me would indicate lots of use, writing in the margins, underlining passages, etc. The paper is AWFUL, it's like handling fragile onion-skin or something else that might be easily destroyed. I can't imagine this being the "work-horse" Bible that one needs as a study bible, because the paper stock was such a poor choice by the publishers. Again, let me say, it's the fragile, thin paper that it's printed on that is the problem, NOT the content of the translation. Also, I think I'll never buy another Bible that's doesn't have Christ's words in red. After all, He is the most important speaker in the Word of God, and I just like having His words in RED, and this edition doesn't offer that. I returned my copy to Amazon after turning only a few pages and am hoping for my refund shortly.
A unique way to study the Bible by .. R. Angus ()
I love this Bible! The literary study approach is unique among other Bibles on the market and I have found it to be an interesting way to look at scripture. I agree with other reviewers that this Bible would have been better with more cross referencing, etc. (they are calling it a Study Bible), but I think it still accomplishes its purpose of providing literary insight into scripture well. I think this would pair well with Sproul's Reformation Study Bible--especially for those who wish for more notes and cross references.

This is my first experience with an ESL translation of the Bible. This study Bible is VERY easy to read and understand and does not stray from the essence of the King James Version. I am extremely pleased with the insights offered in this study Bible. I would recommend it to anyone interested in a deeper understanding of God's word.

I purchased this Study Bible in February or March of 2005 and I initially based that purchase on R. C. Sproul being the General Editor. Much was expected of this Study Bible and it has far exceeded my expectations. The Revised Standard Version had a great deal to recommend it and it was a shame that liberal overreach caused it to (in some cases literally) go down in flames because of its unwillingness to deal properly with the virgin birth. What the ESV did was take the RSV and make it what the RSV should have been. It is very readable but still retains an elevated style worthy of the King James tradition. As an essentially literal translation, it avoids the shortcomings of the NIV which is a dynamic equivalence translation theory Bible.
The footnotes in this SB are helpful but not as extensive as the ESV Study Bible. This SB is open about its Reformed position in the tradition of John Calvin, something that is easy to pick up just by reading the list of contributors, many of whom come from Westminster Theological Seminary, Reformed Theological Seminary, Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary and other seminaries with a similar viewpoint. From the perspective of a Sunday School teacher, I have found the Theological Notes on such subjects as The Fall, Covenant of Grace, Original Sin and Total Depravity, The Trinity, Election and Reprobation, The Atonement, Resurrection and Glorification and literally dozens of other articles to be most helpful. All those matters of course point to the sovereignty of God.
Recently, I purchased the ESV Study Bible and my initial response to it is very positive although I have not read enough to write a review. However, I can speak with certainty when I say that the Reformation Study Bible will not remain on the bookshelf but will continue to be used by me in my study and teaching. I consider myself blessed to have both of these volumes.
On less substantive matters, I much prefer the print in the Reformation Study Bible since it is larger than the ESV Study Bible. Some reviewers have commented on the quality of the leather used in this Study Bible and have suggested purchasing a hard bound version. I own the hard bound version and have not found the outside cover to be very durable. But for the wonders of heavy duty tape applied by my wife, I am not certain this book would still be together. I say, get the leather.

Cutting Corners  by .. EJH (California)
The Bible stands alone and needs no review.
The study notes included in this Bible are an excellent source of practical Godly wisdom and so with the content of this study Bible I am more then satisfied.
The binding however is a poor quality. I am not sure if the intent was to save the consumer money by binding it in cheaper stiff leather but this quality leather will not hold up to the use a person gives to a study Bible. In addition I ended up returning the first one I ordered because after a week of use the corners of the front cover came unattached from the glued cover. This happened only after very little use. I sent for an exchange but at examining the new Bible I received it also showed sings of the same corner problem. This was either a flaw in the cutting or just another result of cheap binding. They were already showing signs of coming loose from the glued page. I am very very sorry that better quality binding was not used. I would have paid more to get a Bible that I could have confidence in to last. I ended up having to return the exchanged one. Sadly, I will not be ordering another.

There is a certainly a shortage of study Bibles in the ESV....this edition is better than okay but not wonderful, in my opinion. It's also very heavy compared to what I'm used to. However, I still highly recommend this one over the other (few) ESV study Bibles out there.

Bible came with pages scrunched inside the book, one of which wasn't cut properly so the page had to be cut down in order to not stick out of the book.

I purchased this for my son for school. They've just changed to this translation for the new year. We've been using it in our church and it is very easy to understand. I especially like the thumb-indexed for those of us who didn't grow up learning the books of the bible. The only downside for me is that I really like the extra study notes my Zondervan NASB study bible provides. That would definitely prove helpful in the school setting in which this one will be used.

This Bible assists one in the Study of God's word. It has an easy to use "chain" system which allows the scripture to explain itself and is extremely easy to use. As far as quality goes, less than 40.00 for genuine leather Oxford Bible, it is a steal. A joy to handle and a bible which will be in my hands many decades from now. Good font for my old eyes, though I prefer about 12 pt, this one seems about 10 but with good type set, good contrast with the paper. I do not understand the "heresy", "fringe", "inaccuracies" stuff. If your desire is to study God's wonderful word which we are blessed with, this Bible is an effective tool. It was ordered specifically to be my primary study/note taking bible. If you desire to nit pick, write your own bible so you can't complain.
Beautiful Bible With a Surprise (For Me, Anyway) by .. RKM (Sedona, AZ USA)
I bought this Bible mainly because it is an English Standard Version, which is my favorite version, and because it is a leather-bound edition published by Oxford University Press, so I knew the binding quality would be good. I was right about the quality and I love the ESV as a reading Bible, but I wasn't familiar with the Scofield Study System, which is based on John Nelson Darby's Dispensationalism Theory (1833). The "theory" relies on an elaborate system of Biblical cross-references to attempt to establish a timeline for the second coming of Christ.
If you subscribe to Darby's theory which many Christians do, upon which the popular fiction series "Left Behind" is based, then this is definitely the Bible for you. If you believe as I do that Jesus meant what he said in Matthew 24:36, "But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only," then this is still a very good Bible. As I said, the ESV is a beautifully written literal translation, and the binding and cover are excellent. In addition, their are well-written introductions to the various groupings of books as well as to each individual book that provide a lot of helpful background information.
If you don't care for the dispensationalist viewpoint and just want an excellent study Bible, I recommend The New Oxford Annotated Bible, which comes in the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV). The NRSV is a literal translation similar to the ESV, except that it tries a little too hard (in my view) to use gender-neutral language, a fault that makes it read badly in those places.
If you have the money and want to really study the Bible, get both. They are both well worth the price.

All in all, this is a great study bible. It has very good footnotes and the study explaination sections are helpful and well written. It also has a great map section. Type size is easy to read. The only negative is the thumb indexing is in black but the letters are in gold, making it somewhat difficult to read. I enjoy the ESV version because is is a literal translation and is easy to read and understand. I would definately recommend this bible.
