In great shape... 5 by .. Kimberly V. Lomax (South Korea)
Received the book and got exactly what was described, book is in great condition. Will definitely buy from this seller again...

disappointed 2 by .. Al Enns ()
Too much fluff and too many factoids. I was hoping for more hard information detailed enough to setup networks.

A Very Handy Reference 4 by .. N. C. Weber ()
Although this book was purchased as a text book required for a graduate level course, its vast amount of network history and detailed diagrams of different types of networks, as well as the many lists of statistics on networking media, make this book an invaluable quick reference for up and coming network admins and engineers.

Good, moderately Microsoft-focused, no Cisco 4 by .. C. Dubuque (Fargo, N.D., U.S.A.)
There's a lot in this book that is good. However, it's focused towards the future Microsoft server administrator, not the future router or switch maintainer. I'd suggest a CCNA-training book for that.

Not for self-study! 2 by .. Andrew ()
Please be aware that this book (and others by the same publisher)are meant for colleges and/or trade schools and thus the answers to exercises, labs, projects, etc are available ONLY to instructors. Furthermore, neither the publisher nor the authors maintain a website for errata so you are on your own if you misunderstand a concept due to typos and false information.

The New York Times Guide to Essential Knowledge 1 by .. R. G. Mouat (USA)
Readers interested in or curious about Latin American literature should get their money back from the editors and a letter of apology. The Latin American entry under the "World Literature" section is simply grotesque and unacceptable in a book of this nature. Check out the spelling of Manuel Gutierrez Najera's paternal last name on p. 56 and the unbelievable mauling of Mariano Azuela's given name (spelled as "Matriana...!") But that's not all. Alejo Carpentier comes across as "Alfonso" Carpentier and Mexican author Gregorio Lopez y Fuentes's novel "El indio" is somehow transposed to Peru and retitled ""Peru and the Indian." I would hate to have to rely on this book for information on any literature that is not written in English.

a taste of everything 4 by .. BookKid ()
This book has been a lot of fun and has me reading about things that I wouldn't normally pick up a whole book on. Instead I get some solid information and it has prompted me to check out other topics in more detail. For example, it starts with a great introduction to architecture. I have been looking online and in other books to learn more about Gothic architecture which is something I wouldn't have done before. Obviously it can't cover everything but it is worth the time if you are interested in learning new things, expanding your education to fill some of the holes left from school etc.

A big boost toward being informed 4 by .. Justin B. Dossey (San Francisco, CA USA)
This book doesn't cover everything, but it's a great start toward in-depth study of the world around us. I wouldn't view it as the alpha and omega of reference books, but each section inspires the reader to do outside reading. Take a year or so to go through it and you'll come out with a well-rounded and broad perspective-- and you'll be pretty good at Jeopardy! too :)

Great Source For Information 5 by .. Joseph A. Guarise (St. John, USVI USA)
The essential book of knowlege is an easy reference book and jam backed with useful information. It can answer those quirky questions that you forgot the answers to quickly and easily. When was the last time you read the Declaration of Independence? What are those wine regions in France? How do I correctly punctuate this sentence? Faster than the internet.

if this is knowledge, I prefer ignorance 1 by .. daveklein222 (New Brunswick)
A masterpiece of Orwellian titling, this book contains over 1000 pages of trivia wrapped in a pretty dust jacket that promises a thorough review of "essential" knowledge. Now I like trivial knowledge as much as the next guy (more, probably), but let's be honest: if you didn't know a single one of the facts in this book, you'd get through life just fine. Maybe if the book told you how to change a tire on a car or something, it'd be worth the price, but it doesn't (I looked in the index, so I know.) All this book will do is help you avoid looking uninformed at cocktail parties... perhaps this is what qualifies as an "essential" skill in the modern era.

To quote Lisa Simpson, this book "gets the facts right, but misses the point entirely."

Helpful Introduction 5 by .. Tweeter North ()
Lovin's text is not intended to provide guidelines for ethical leadership as a Christian. It is not designed to be a programmatic statement of position on particular moral issues of our day. It is not designed to be a theological treatise of his own "moral theology."

Lovin's text is a profoundly simple and easy to read text that introduces the basic aspects of thinking about ethics from a Christian theological standpoint. It is an ideal first textbook for use in undergraduate courses on Theological Ethics, which is precisely how it is most commonly used. Though brief, the text is dense with helful characterizations of complex arguments that take center stage in the academic field at present.

As a student of Christian Ethics, I can certainly say with confidence that unindoctrinated readers will be introduced to many such conversations without even knowing it, which is the real beauty of Lovin's accomplishment. This is a text that focuses on the issues of ethics as a discipline and how Christian's "do" ethics without getting bogged down by particular scholars and their nuanced arguments.

BUT, and most importantly, readers of this text who later encounter those arguments or arguments concerning the same themes will be able to join in and contribute responsibly and intelligently.

This text is suitable for church-based religious education programs, undergraduate courses, and simply for interested thinkers of all types.

Review Christian Ethics 2 by .. David J. Van Dam ()
It was a rather mundane review of Christian Ethics that went over a lot of already covered material. It did not focus on any creative pieces to help me with providing leadership in this area.

Really cool for star wars fans, full of details about jedi history. There's a lot of pictures and it's real easy to read. Highly recommended ! :)

If you thought you might be interested... 5 by .. Enthusiast ()
...then you would definitely enjoy this book. I have enjoyed most of the 'Essential' books of the Star Wars Universe. I find that they are very good at filling in the holes between the books, comics and games. It answers lots of little questions that you didn't even know had been asked.

Reference for George Lucas' Universe 5 by .. Roque Maria Neto (Santo Andre, Sao Paulo Brazil)
The book has a very complete "historical" background for the Star Wars universe. Although some topics are not covered in the films, it emcompasses all books, comics and other sources of George Lucas' universe. It is a must for all Star Wars fans!

One of the Best Essential Guides I've Ever Purchased 4 by .. T. Morton (Central New Jersey)
I am a huge fan of the Star Wars Essential Guides, and this is one of my new favorites. The art work is exceptional and the colors are so vibrant--it's a real departure from the older Guides in black and white. The Guide to the Force is very well written and covers a wide range of topics including Force Abilities, the history of the Sith, selected writings on the Dark Side, and a short but well-detailed history of "The Chosen One." I absolutely love this book and could not put it down. For a major Star Wars fan, and a great lover of the Essential Guides, this was a real treat!

Good info 4 by .. G. L Sulea (Cleveland, Ohio United States)
I like this book a lot. As it delves deeply into the history of the Jedi and the Sith, the book is a great compliment to the whole Star Wars universe, although I'd like more "insider" info on things like the lightsaber fencing styles and the like, I enjoyed the book.

Whether at a business meeting, church gathering, or social function, most of us will be called upon at some time to speak publicly. As Christians, we are called to speak not only with effectiveness but also in a way that honors God and embodies Christian virtue. In An Essential Guide to Public Speaking, communications expert Quentin J. Schultze encourages readers to become servant speakers who faithfully serve their audiences as neighbors. Besides providing a biblical perspective on public speaking, this accessible book also covers such practical topics as overcoming common challenges, the importance of listening, and the art of preparing and delivering well-crafted speeches. Filled with helpful sidebars, checklists, and tips, this is a book for any person who wishes to improve his or her public speaking skills.

A practical tool 5 by .. Christian Book Previews.com ()
"It's short. I like it," reviewed the Muppet critics following Mr. Fezziwig's Christmas speech in the movie, The Muppet Christmas Carol. Likewise, author Quentin Schultze has penned a 112-page guide for those launching or improving their speaking abilities.

An Essential Guide to Public Speaking: Serving Your Audience with Faith, Skill, and Virtue is written with grace and humility. A college professor at the University of Illinois, Schultze has spent three decades speaking to his classroom, at conferences, businesses, and on broadcast programs as a news source and commentator. Far from an instruction manual according to Schultze, the author peppered the manuscript with the insights of notable speakers from Augustine to Elie Wiesel to Mike Yaconelli. Speaking tips are highlighted in colorful boxes.

To the reluctant, Schultze writes, "Public speaking is inevitable. We may need to give eulogies, lead group discussions, pray publicly, present awards, participate in civic meetings, and much more." Biblically, speech is "a gift and a responsibility for the service of our neighbors." To quote from another speaker, "Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have," (1 Peter 3:15).

Chapters in this handbook include "Addressing Challenges," "Listening Well," "Crafting Artfully," "Speaking Truthfully," and "Being Virtuous." The author addresses the destructive fear most people face regarding public speaking. Statistics reveal that the majority would rather die than speak before a group. Moses was the visual aid, "Lord, send Aaron."

"On the flip side of destructive fear is excessive ego evident in self-righteous and self-centered speech," observes Schultze. "Ego is heady stuff, especially for skilled presenters." Should we be tempted, Schultze steers readers away from boring audiences with an inflated ego.

A practical tool, An Essential Guide to Public Speaking includes five appendixes. By using these checklists and the sample speech outline, anyone can craft a worthy presentation.

Over the years, I've read a number of books on public speaking. In this category, An Essential Guide to Public Speaking is my top pick. And it's short. - PeggySue Wells, Christian Book Previews.com

When it comes to extraterrestrial life-forms, there’s more to science fiction’s most famous galaxy than just Jawas, Wookiees, Ewoks, and Hutts. From the skylanes of Coruscant to the worlds of the Outer Rim, an untold number of species populate those planets far, far away. And if you confuse Gungans with Gamorreans, or don’t know a bantha from a tauntaun, you definitely need the in-depth data that only this revised, expanded, and updated guide can deliver.
This comprehensive overview includes beings from all six of the classic movies–plus the novels, cartoon series, comics, and video games. It’s an even bigger cross section of species than what you’ll find in the Mos Eisley cantina. And each entry, from acklay to Zabrak, from amphibians to vacuum-breathers, features everything you need to know, including

• complete physical description and official designation, so you can tell your sentients from your non-sentients, and your humanoids from your insectoids
• homeworld: from dry and dusty Tatooine, stormy and waterlogged Kamino, to arctic Hoth, and countless other strange and varied worlds
• phonetic pronunciation: Askajian, H’nemthe, Iktotchi, Ssi-ruu, and Xexto/Quermian aren’t as easy to say as they are to, er, spell
• notable appearance: a listing of one of the more significant appearances of each species in the teeming Star Wars storyline

Plus, this brand-new edition includes a glossary of crucial descriptive terms and a completely original, full color illustration for each of more than one hundred individual species. It’s a big galaxy, and someone has to organize it. Count on Star Wars®: The New Essential Guide to Alien Species–and don’t leave your homeworld without it.

Expanded Second Edition 5 by .. John Matlock (Winnemucca, NV)
Now how are you going to understand the joke unless you know these species. And how are you going to know these species without the guide book.

This guide book is a description of the alien species found in the Star Wars. Generally each species gets two pages. On the left hand side wil be a drawing illustrating a representative of the species. On the tight is a description of the species, their home habitat, and other pertinent information about them. Overall, about a hundred species are so described, with another few dozen more given a third of a page or so of description.

This is the second edition of the book: revised, expanded and with color images of the alien species as requested by the readers of the earlier edition.

Of particular interest is the entry on 'Humans.' It remarks that we are really quite wide spread across the galazy. I guess that mean we've still got a chance.

New Essential Guide To Alien Species 5 by .. Todd Waterhouse ()
Glad to see the newer version. They did leave out the Selkath and Rakata from Knights Of The Old Republic. Hopefully they will be added to the 3rd version (if there is one).

Star Wars 5 by .. Kismet (Glenville, NY)
My husband is a BIG Star Wars fan! He received this book along with the updated Guide to Droids. He has all the Essential Guides & likes to keep up to date on the latest Aliens. I would recommend this book to add to your collection of Star Wars Books. Kind of like a "program" guide

Incomplete 4 by .. Tom Servo (Satelite of Love)
Now while I did enjoy the new info, pics, and the fact that it has finally been released, it is still lacking. Some species should have been depicted and further explored such as the Muun, Gen'Dai, Sith (species), Vagaari, and the like. It was lacking.

THE ESSENTIAL GUIDE 4 by .. J. C. Alvarez (Long Island City, NY United States)
If you've ever wondered what the differences were between a tauntaun and a bantha, well than this is the book for you! Lavishly illustrated with complete bios and histories on the denizens of the STAR WARS universe, you'll spend hours exploring a galaxy far, far away!

Funny In-Joke 4 by .. Evan A. Stoddard (USA)
I was just checking it out and was going to pass on it when I noticed that one of the droids in the book is a joke - it's made up of all of the Kenner Droid Factory toy parts stuck together, and then they made up a complete backstory for it. Had to pick it up after that!

good artwork 4 by .. A. Lane (usa)
Pictures are awesome. Just wish it provided a little more info that could be used or interpreted for game play.

Solid entry in the series 4 by .. Oshram (Lakewood, OH United States)
For the most part I feel the Star Wars "Essential Guide" series are a good value for the money. Yes, there is a LOT of SW product out there but the entire line is well done, and this new book on droids is no exception. The illustrations are excellently done, and the text is detailed enough to be interesting but brief enough to be enjoyable. Even a casual SW fan should enjoy this book.

great update 5 by .. Gary Tucker (Cincinnati, Ohio United States)
Another great Essential Star Guide by Dan Wallace. This volume includes material from the three prequel movies and is worth every cent. Good job Dan! Looking forward to Helen Keier's New Essential Guide to Aliens.

Definitive Guide Like No Other 5 by .. J. Bongiorno (Valley Stream, NY United States)
Finally a New Essential Guide that can truly be called "Essential!" This may be the best essential guide (only the New Essential Chronology competes with it) written. Dan Wallace (with the aid of Able Pena and Pablo Hidalgo) has gone over every nook and cranny of the Star Wars Expanded Universe, and if there's a droid to be found, a detail to uncover, a story-element to expose, he's done it!

After the disappointing New Essential Guide to Vehicles and Vessels (which followed the trend of ignoring a lot of early Expanded Universe sources), I thought I was through with the NEG's. The New Essential Chronology changed that and this book has now upped the ante on ALL future Star Wars reference books!

Everything is here. Entire pages are devoted to characters from rare and even out-of-print continuity sources, from old newspaper strips by Russ Manning, to the Droids animated show and spin-off Star Comics series, to Alan Moore's rare stint on Marvel UK's Empire Strikes Weekly (reprinted in Devilworlds) to the requisite but often overlooked pages of Marvel Star Wars (reprinted recently as A Long Time Ago volumes 1-7), L. Neill Smith's brilliant Lando Calrissian trilogy, RPG sources, novels, young readers books, Dark Horse comics; It's all here and much, much more! Not a stone is left unturned from 1977 to 2006, nearly 30 years of continuity has gone into this book that actually succeeds in demonstrating that the much maligned "appliances" of Star Wars are really fascinating creations in their own right, and every bit as intriguing as their human masters.

Wallace handles the text expertly, weaving bits of continuity to form a much stronger and cohesive whole. This is not a guide for techies either, or even just for those who've read every original source out there, but rather it's a book for the average Star Wars reader written with a narrative structure. Far from simply providing the origin and purpose of the droid in question, each entry features fascinating short biographical tales of some of the famous examples that caused either salvation or destruction to the galaxy! Also, there's a history of droids section that details the dawn of their inception to their persecution and abolition at the hands of the Yuuzahn Vong. Also, as an added bonus, the illustrations here are stunningly realized.

This is definitely a guide you don't want to miss and represents the high watermark Star Wars authors can achieve when they combine love of the universe with intelligent, diligent research and a deft hand at fixing the plotholes and connecting the dots. For from these often disparate pieces, some of the great tales emerge. This book is proof of that.
