Customer reviews Fabulous by .. Alyssa A. Lappen (Earth) Hungarian is so different from romance languages and English that one finds oneself literally out in the cold when listening to even the most basic conversation in Magyar. But on my next Hungarian sojourn, I will definitely bring it along.
An uneducated English speaker might think the commonly used Magyar word "jo," for example, to mean "I," or yes. It's neither. Yes is "igen," and "jo" means "good." So when you hear someone saying "Jo, jo, jo, jo," which is also very common in Hungarian exchanges, you'll at least understand that the people approve of whatever it is they are talking about.
This slim 148-page book contains a pronunciation guide and a short discussion of complex Magyar grammar, as well as a 40-page dictionary containing the most commonly used Hungarian words and a 70-page phrasebook, divided according to topics, i.e. transportation, personal data, hotels, restaurants, and the like.
I believe this neat little volume (less wide than Zagat's), could have been a lifesaver on my last trip to Hungary's gorgeous countryside. To be sure, next time I will not "leave home without it."
Highly recommended, especially at the amazingly low "used" prices.
Hungarian-English/English-Hungarian Dictionary and Phrasebook (Hippocrene Dictionary & Phrasebooks) by .. Lili (Santa Barbara, CA, USA) Excellent! Perfect for the Hungarian speaker who wants to learn, or refresh their language skills, especially while using the Hungarian TV shows online. This book is great for easy quick reference.
Missing the Pronunciation of Hungarian words by .. Arnon Hetsrony (Long beach, NY) Because the Hungariqan alphabet and especially the pronunciation is different from English, it it a must to have next to each Hungarian word or phrase, its pronunciation - and this book it missing it!
Yes, they have pronunciation of letters in separate page, but you have to look back each time you want to learn how to prononuce a word.
If you're a beginner, stay away from this book.
Not Very Detailed by .. Nancy (Livonia, MI) I bought this book to help me translate messages and Hungarian ancestral documents for my genealogical research. This book is has very limited vocabulary. I am currently searching for a better more comprehensive Hungarian/English dictionary. Spend more money and buy a better book.
It helps when off the beaten (Anglophone) track by .. John L Murphy (Los Angeles) All I can say is that when in provincial Hungary, an English-speaker is not necessarily found. This portable phrasebook and simple dictionary serves the purpose, and using it, I was able to communicate in a limited fashion, along with gestures and smiles. The price and size are right, and it'll help you navigate in a part of Europe that still may expect German or even Russian speakers more often than intrepid and often mono-lingual Anglophones.

Expressions, illustrative examples, and essential phrases are included throughout, making it an ideal companion for English speakers working or studying in Hungary, as well as for Hungarian speakers in the U.S. Over 31,000 entries Comprehensive pronunciation guide Concise introduction to Hungarian Grammar Appendices featuring irregular verbs in English and Hungarian Customer reviews Hippocrene won me over on this one. by .. DomnulVJB (Brooklyn, NY) Now, normally Hippocrene publishes these concise (less than 10,000 translations) and commercial (New Times Font, no idiom markings) dictionaries, surprisingly about many of the world's less-commonly-studied languages. This dictionary has to be one of the better reference books published by Hippocrene which I have ever come across.
A good, handy dictionary and very recommended!
Hungarian Practical Dictionary: Hungarian-English English-Hungarian (Hippocrene Practical Dictionaries) by .. Lili (Santa Barbara, CA, USA) Excellent! Perfect for the Hungarian speaker who wants to learn, or refresh their language skills, especially while using the Hungarian TV shows online. This book is great for easy, quick, complete, reference.
very practical by .. Tom K (Angels Camp, CA United States) This is a good dictionary for someone like me who knows some hungarian because you can look up words either way.
Hungarian Practical Dictionary by .. Marsita (San Diego, CA) We purchased this book as a gift for my Mother. She had taken Hungarian lessons as a young girl growing up in Pennsylvania and had friends and relatives to speak Hungarian to until about 20 years ago. This book was purchased for her to use on an upcoming trip we are making this summer to Hungary. She is so pleased with the book's content that she read it cover to cover reacquainting herself with words she hasn't used in years. She would rate this book five stars.

Product Description *Over 7,000 entries *Useful vocabulary and expressions for the traveler *Common-sense pronunciation *Introduction to Hungarian language *Index of Hungarian Geographical Names *A Practical Conversation Guide *Appendices of Typical Hungarian Dishes, Original Hungarian First Names, and Holidays in Hungary Customer reviews Nice pocket guide by .. Alyssa A. Lappen (Earth) Here's another pocket guide I will definitely pack on the next trip to Budapest. I'll have on hand something to quickly check the meanings of the strange, Finnish-like language I doubt I can ever learn.
I highly recommend this guide, particularly at the low used prices. My copy, supposedly used, came in clean, bright and new-looking condition.
I couldn't be happier.
Too limited for me by .. Rose M. Lowry () They could have put the text in 2 columns, and included 1/3 again as many words. There were so many words we looked up that were not there, it was very frustrating.
It's a handy size, and did a nice job of concisely explaining the structure of the Hungarian Language.
Plus it really needed a few pages of basic phrases.
Best Small Dictionary by .. Kimberly Bares (Chicago, IL USA) This dictionary is the perfect size for traveling. It offers a wide array of words in both English and Hungarian, plus helpful information on pronunciation, basic grammar and conversions. Highly recommend it for beginners.
you could do better by .. eamanning (Connecticut, USA) If you're traveling as a tourist, this dictionary should be adequate for your needs. The dictionary is what it is: concise. However, as a student studying Hungarian, I feel that a volume that encompasses more would better serve the purpose of a reference book. As the book has only 10,000 words, I found many gaps when I went to look up a word in Hungarian or to try to find the Hungarian translation of an English word. A handy quick reference, but be sure that that's all you need it for.
very handy pocket dictionary by .. Living in Budapest (Budapest, Hungary (originally Ann Arbor, MI)) This dictionary is great for everyday use. Most other English-Hungarian/Hungarian-English dictionaries are big and hardcover, making them too bulky to carry around for quick reference. I would highly recommend this dictionary for tourists or students who want a handy reference to carry around.

Product Description Even if you do not like crossword puzzles, you may end up loving these. Designed for mother-tongue or completely fluent speakers of Hungarian wanting to improve their English skills, the puzzles may also be entertaining to English speakers. They are formatted so that each puzzle can be solved in 15 to 30 minutes. The vocabulary gradually becomes harder across puzzles thus increasing the challenge as you progress. Each book has 100 puzzles and each puzzle covers some 30 word pairs (equaling 3000 challenges!). These are truly pleasant, if not addictive, crossword puzzles for language learning. Learning a language is always difficult. To ease the pain, hints are provided in small script at the bottom of each page, though these are selected to prevent an engineered solution to the puzzle. Full solutions are provided in the back of the book. These two features (hints and verifiable solutions), force the reader to decipher a word’s meaning and serves to improve vocabulary retention and understanding. One recent reviewer of this series noted “As a Peace Corps Volunteer … this is definitely a fun way to keep up the language skills … The series has a whole bunch of "rarely spoken" languages, widely unknown to us in the Western world.” Another reviewer notes: “Good teacher as it has words listed below that are in puzzle so the clues are there if you need them.” Public domain translations for Hungarian contributed to Webster’s Online Dictionary used in these puzzles may have originated from uncited volunteers, native speakers, professional translators, field linguists and academics (not by the editor of the puzzles). If you would like citation for any translations, make suggestions, note errors, or contribute in any other way, please email Philip M. Parker at INSEAD, who will update this series from time to time. Customer reviews Good Dictionary by .. Budapesht (MI) The only caveat is that this isn't a reciprocal dictionary (ie-it doesn't offer translations from hungarian to english to complement the english hungarian translations).
the best Magyar dictionaries you can get outside of Hungary... by .. Reviewer (Utah) ...probably owing to their being made in Hungary! Seriously, though, if you really want to learn Hungarian then you are wasting your time with anything else but this and its partner (Magyar-Angol ISBN-13: 978-9630583589) I feel bad for the guy who wrote the bad review for this, since he didn't know that it's unidirectional or realize that both books must be purchased, but that's the way all dictionaries are in Hungary.
If you're looking for Hungarian dictionaries, go with this. Whatever you do, DO NOT buy the materials on this language from Hippocrene! I hate to talk negative, but as an American who learned Hungarian I can tell you that they are absolutely useless when it comes to speaking or reading Magyar that people actually use. In those, you won't be able to find a third of the words you hear or read, and please believe that I'm not exaggerating. After some years in Hungary, I've realized that every time I try to use them I'm frustrated to find that the word isn't there and I have to pull out these little Akademiai Kiado dictionaries to find it.
This dictionary itself is very well laid out and easy to search through. Definitions, parts of speech and examples(things ignored in almost all the other Magyar dictionaries available in the US)all of them are here. Best of all, you'll find useful words and phrases that Hungarians actually USE and UNDERSTAND, one of those necessary little aspects Hippocrene leaves out of every single one of its Hungarian titles.
Bottom line:Buy this and its aforementioned partner if you want anything useful. It may be a pain to pay for both dictionaries, but the extra 15 bucks or so is a whole lot better than the headache any other equivalent on the market will cause you.
It's a UNI-DIRECTIONAL dictionary aimed for Hungarian students wishing to speak English by .. Daniel J. Clarke (A Brit In Atlanta) As far as dictionaries go, this is, I'm sure, great.
HOWEVER, it's hard for me to judge because it's aimed at the Hungarian speaker wishing to speak English.
It's a UNI-DIRECTIONAL dictionary (but is bilingual). You cannot look up Hungarian words and find their English meaning - for that you must buy the other book, Magyar-Angol (ISBN-13: 978-9630583589).
I wish I had known about needing to buy the other book. I assumed that it would be bi-directional, as I have NEVER before seen a one-way dictionary.
It comes with a CD for a software dictionary, but:
a) the dictionary, like the book is uni-directional
b) the software in written in Hungarian which as a beginner I do not understand
c) The software mentioned something about 14 days. A 2-week free trial? I must register within 2 weeks? Who knows!

Customer reviews What else are you going to use? And it turns out to be great by .. Christopher Culver () Akademiai Kiado's two dictionaries, MAGYAR-ANGOL SZOTAR (ISBN 9630569434) and ANGOL-MAGYAR SZOTAR (ISBN 9630569426) are the only real option for English-speaking students of Hungarian in search of a pocket dictionary. The only competition, Hippocrene's awful pocket offering and the Rough Guide Hungarian phrasebook (which turns out to just be a normal dictionary) contain so few items and are typeset unreadably to even come close to Akademiai Kiado's.
Edited by Tamas Magay and Laszlo Kiss, the dictionaries are sold in bookshops in Hungary and are mainly focused at Hungarians. However, the editors were kind enough to make these entirely useful for English speakers. The Hungarian foreword has an English translation, the list of abbreviations has explanations in both English and Hungarian, and there's a layout of Hungarian speech sounds just for foreigners. MAGYAR-ANGOL SZOTAR contains three appendices. The first, a table of English irregular verbs, and the second, a short list of English irregular nouns, need not concern us. However, the third, conversions between metric and imperial weights and measures (and their English and Hungarian terminology) will prove quite useful for the foreigner travelling in Hungary.
The dictionaries are durable (hardcovers with no dust cover), insanely cheap (especially when bought on the spot), and relatively recent (1995). There's no better option for pocket dictionaries, highly recommended to all students of Hungarian.

Product Description Contains more than 30,000 entries and valuable resources including pronunciation guides and measurement conversions. Intended for beginners, intermediate and advanced students of Hungarian. However, the modern vocabulary will aid anyone who desires to practice, develop, or enrich their skills in Hungarian. Also holds over 20,000 phrases and examples within the entries. Customer reviews I LOVE this dictionary by .. A. K. Gary (Boston, MA) Contrary to the other review. I MUCH PREFER this dictionary to the Kiadó dictionaries. This one includes many more usage suggestions and expressions SO KEY to figuring out hungarian. Plus it has 30,000 words where the Kiadó has 19,000. Tall and skinny - OK to travel with.
The dictionary is good but Hippocrene's printing should be avoided by .. Christopher Culver () Akademiai Kiado's two English-Hungarian dictionaries, MAGYAR-ANGOL SZOTAR (ISBN 9630569434) and ANGOL-MAGYAR SZOTAR (ISBN 9630569426) are excellent concise dictionaries that are very suitable for students. However, the third, conversions between metric and imperial weights and measures (and their English and Hungarian terminology) will prove quite useful for the foreigner travelling in Hungary.
Now Hippocrene has brought the English-Hungarian dictionary to the United States, but I'd recommend against getting it in this form. It is a poorly-made book, and is sized as a trade paperback annihilating the advantage that the original Hungarian printing had in its pocket size. Get the Hungarian print instead, which is durable (hardcovers with no dust cover) and insanely cheap (especially when bought on the spot). There's no better option for pocket dictionaries than that.
