Product Description IS IT ME OR IS IT THEM?Maintaining control in today's hectic workplace is a challenge -- everything is lean, competitive, and uncertain. What does it take to survive? Making Work Work is Julie Morgenstern's most important book yet. Through the mastery of brand-new strategies, Morgenstern shows you how small changes in your thinking and behavior will help you achieve the seemingly impossible -- boost your value, increase your job security, and afford you the time to still have a life. Morgenstern has helped clients of all levels take control of their work lives in every industry: from corporations and nonprofits to government agencies and small businesses; from executives and assistants to educators and salespeople. She's learned that no matter who you are, happiness at work involves feeling appreciated, in control, successful, and in balance. And achieving that is possible. People rarely look at their jobs from a psychological and practical perspective at the same time, but Julie Morgenstern does. This book mirrors the individual consulting services she provides by showing you how to start with yourself and then tackle the more complex external issues of working relationships and the job. For every obstacle you encounter along the way, Morgenstern diagnoses the source of the problem (is it you or them?), and with insight and warmth, she provides simple grab-and-go strategies. These are small changes anyone can make to improve performance and efficiency at work. At its core, Making Work Work is about your relationship to your job. With the reliable, methodical process taught in this book, you will: • feel less trapped and more in charge • be able to make a bad situation better • search for a job that's a better fit for who you are. This is a provocative and life-changing book that will help you boost your clarity, confidence, and performance in any economic climate. With Morgenstern's guidance you can find a way to make work work. Customer reviews Waste of Time by .. jeffery Morris (Newport Beach, Ca) Ironically a book on time management and organization takes 72 pages to get to the first time management tip, "focus on tasks that are closest to the revenue line". The first chapters are wordy cliché discussions such as work life balance, develop an entrepreneur mindset...blah blah blah. I found myself skimming the paragraphs looking for any specific original material. She has endless bullet points and numbered lists that are shallow random thoughts that read like a collection of Oprah magazine articles. Even worse are the self indulgent verbose romance novel examples, including this gem from page 165 "A news writer for a national trade magazine, Claire was a five-foot-one dynamo transforming her industry. Working alone, she was a one-women wonder, churning out cutting edge stories from an office as wild as her mane of curly black hair. Claire's eyes sparkled with a sense of adventure, and her face was always on the verge of a huge, warm smile....." This dribble goes on for 3 more long paragraphs. Morgenstern undermines her credibility with these exaggerated fairy tale descriptions. She should purchase a copy of Strunk and White Elements of Style, save us the sophomoric prose and write a 50 page concise, focused time management and office organization book. A terrific alternative is 4 hour workweek by Timothy Ferris which covers many of the same points in a more compelling, concise and convincing manner.
Great For Employees of Small(er) Businesses by .. Rudy Neufeld (Fresno, CA United States) Small or large, the tasks and responsibilities every organization must complete to be successful are pretty much the same. But employees of smaller businesses have a wider range of responsibilities than the more specialized staff of larger firms. Small business employees--and their owners--continually are confronted by many more types of tasks requiring attention. Additionally, smaller businesses tend to "run lean" with limited back up if someone is absent. These factors tend to foster an unfocused and inefficient workplace.
This book offers employees in such situations with insights and strategies that show them how to be more productive and efficient. If done well, it will also result in better work life balance and a less stressful workplace.
Two caveats, particularly for management and business owners:
1. Woefully inadequate attention (in this book) to the value of planning as the most effective way to minimize "fires" and "the tyranny of the urgent";
2. No apparent consideration for time and attention necessary for maintaining the culture and values of the company (e.g., customers always come first, or great performance every time or measure twice, cut once, etc.)
New way of e-mailing by .. Maxim Masiutin (Chisinau, Republic of Moldova) "Never Check E-Mail In the Morning" is not about e-mail, it is about time management, self-discipline and productivity in general. The book helps you in self-assessment, helps to embrace your work/life balance, to develop entrepreneurial mindset, to choose the most important tasks, to create the time to get things done, to control the nibblers, to organize at the speed of change, to master delegation, to work well with others and to leverage your value.
Like other popular self-help books, "Never Check E-Mail In the Morning" has no "references" section, which I don't like. Once you have completed this book, you have no direction what to read next. Julie Morgenstern, the author of many time management books and a monthly columnist for O, The Oprah Magazine, and a guest on television and radio programs, probably supposes that you will continue with her further publications.
When the author writes about e-mail and the productivity issues that relate to e-mail, I fully agree with the author. She offers to break counterproductive habits and stereotypes related to our way of emailing. She covers the problems related to e-mail much better that "Hamster Revolution" by Mike Song.
I highly recommend "Getting Things Done" by David Allen and "Time Drive" by Gleb Arkhangelsky in addition to this book.
do what works best by .. J. R. Fielhauer (Durham, NC USA) Lets start with the bad. The book is mostly stuff you've already heard or is completely obvious to you. Morgenstern's advice for organizing information is to 'do what works best for you'. Gee, thanks for the hot tip.
The book starts with an address to those who work far too many hours. I work an average number of hours but if I can be more efficient I'd like to see if I can make that number smaller. So I read the first part and didn't really get anything from it. As the book progresses she gets into how time is wasted and how to avoid the things and people that waste your time. This is the heart of the book's message because time is our most precious commodity. That's why I found it counterintuitive that the author's language was... far from concise; I was surprised by the amount of text devoted to the biographies of her clients. When you say something like, "meetings can be a large waste of time," we understand what you mean. You don't need to illustrate that point by telling us about someone who worked a lot of hours and attended many pointless meetings. Remember, our time is precious and this isn't exactly Literature; you would think Morgenstern would be more conscious of how much of our time she's taking.
Toward the latter half of the book Morgenstern meanders into a topic that begins to contradict her earlier ideas. When she was describing situations that waste your time she hit on the idea of other employees wasting your time. But towards the end she gives us examples of people who don't make enough time for other employees and so one can only conclude that the unifying message is don't give too much time but also not too little. This is in all capacities the same advice for how to organize your data: 'do what works best'. So in the end Morgenstern hasn't really come up with solutions. She addresses a variety of different problems people have but her advice in the end is always the same: pick your head up, figure out what's important and do it without wasting your time. Again, not a very profound message and not one that should take 272 pages to explain.
Now on to the slightly more positive. The title of the book is quite provocative and an excellent advertising scheme. Sorry to those of you who didn't realize it's the same book and now own two. The title can be explained as follows: If the first thing you do in the morning is check your email then there are any number of ways that you'll be diverted from your critical tasks to deal with all the little things your inbox has for you. Email creates a false sense of accomplishment for people because in the span of an hour or so you're likely to deal with a large number of different issues (likely half of them are personal) and so you feel like you've accomplished quite a bit but now that it's almost time for lunch you really haven't done much at all (including writing a review for this book on amazon). You've been in the office but you probably haven't done anything that makes money for your company - anything worth telling your boss about.
Lets face it. For a number of jobs not checking your email in the morning is absurd. The underlying idea, however, is that at work you spend too much time multitasking and not enough time getting that really important job done. Multitasking slows total productivity and it hurts the quality of each individual piece of work. The real skill to learn is to avoid clicking that forwarded link for a youtube video.
So Morgenstern recommends that you do one thing at a time and that you plan when to do these things based on when you have energy during the day. She also tells you to let others know your schedule so they'll be more accommodating. This again, depending on the job may be totally unrealistic but I guess if you're in charge you can set whatever rules you like.
If anything in this review is unclear to you then perhaps you should buy the book but if it all makes sense to you then you're better off looking elsewhere. You're welcome.
Morgenstern revolutionized our business by .. Real Estate Agent (Los Angeles, CA) Nearly a year ago, I bought Never Check E-mail in the Morning and implemented the practices prescribed throughout the book into our busy real estate office. We were drowning in in our crazy workloads, and struggling under the pressure of always being available to our clients. With e-mail and BBs you can never turn off, especially in real estate where it's completely client-based. Morgenstern's techniques really revolutionized the way we did business and helped us to better manage clients' needs and our own sanity. Her strategies are so practical and address all the problems of working in a 24/7 global market. I definitely recommend it!

Customer reviews Not recommended, poorly written by .. David A. Rozansky (Denver, Colorado USA) I bought this book to help with my publishing company's marketing program. I truly regret spending any money on this book, and the time spent reading this book was a waste.
Brown's guide to E-Mail marketing is so poorly written, it was a tough challenge to understand what was being said. There are far too many grammatical, spelling, syntax and style errors, usually four or more on any single page. In some cases, there are sentence fragments where it is apparent that text was deleted in the manuscript. In one case, an entire page or more of text appeared to be missing. There are even a few instances of notes the author wrote to himself but did not remove before publication.
The book is also filled with "Case Studies" that are actually blog entries from other e-mail marketing professionals. This is not ordinarily a problem, but these sidebars are constantly repeating the same advice over and over again, almost verbatim, and as such they are a waste of many, many pages. Many of these so-called case studies refer to web pages or had links that in print are obviously missing, and so the entire case study is for naught because the reference material cited is not there.
In addition, there are entire chapters devoted to website design and search engine optimization. Great topics, but these have nothing to do with the topic of the book, e-mail marketing.
And yet Brown goes on and on about making sure that any email you send out in an email blast or in an email newsletter should have perfect spelling and grammar, and all links should be complete. He also makes it clear that if the subject line of an email does not match the content, it will only result in negative feelings on the part of the reader. Brown should take his own advice, because that is exactly how I feel right now.
There is a very troubling statement Brown makes about copyright laws. He said that there is no need to get permission to copy part of someone else's newsletter (or a story from an actual news agency) under fair use as long as you only use a small portion of it. This is not true, especially if the use is commercial in nature. If the portion is "substantial," and the use is *not* for critical review, then it needs a copyright permission in writing. Taking Brown's advice on this matter is certain to land most email marketing writers in hot water. It showed lack of research and little understanding of the industry, and made me doubt anything else he might have had to say about the CAN-SPAM Act, spam filters, and typical response rates.
The quality of the writing is so bad that not only do I discourage anyone from spending time with this book, I would have to say I cannot recommend this author, nor could I recommend any book published by Atlantic Publishing Group, as the publisher should have seen that this was not of publishable quality.
I feel like I just read 268 pages of SPAM.

This book delivers! by .. Taryn Simpson (Nashville, TN) Most books that promise to be the only manual you need to succeed, do one of two things; either deliver the goods or not. Brown's Email Marketing Guide delivers and more. While some authors make a point of burying valid information towards the back of the book, Brown makes a point of introducing the material in an orderly and logical manner. Brown has put together one of the most thorough and complete books on the vast subject of email marketing. I will definitely recommend it to my friends and business associates.
It's apparent that now author knows what he says by .. Rolands Petrevics (Taiwan) and it's 5 stars for this book, since here we get clear, easy to follow, and good advices to follow, and we have good selection of experts and good advices. If you plan buy a book on e-mail marketing this one will be good choice.
Also, I need to say, that as good was this book - same bad was another this author's book - The Ultimate Guide to Search Engine Marketing: Pay Per Click Advertising Secrets Revealed
in this book, advices are or outdated, or even wrong, experts so called "advices" are nothing else but sales letters, and it is clear enough, that Search Engine Marketing is not a thing what this author knows.
But this book e-mail marketing, is clearly one of the best till now written on the topic.

Customer reviews Looks very good by .. D. E. Forrester (West Bend, Wisconsin) I have been taking several courses at our technical college and have not had time to use this book yet. It looks like it will be very helpful but I do not know as yet.
Great for my Seniors by .. J. P. Erdman (New England) I'm teaching a class at the local UMaine Senior college. This book is BY FAR the best text for introducing seniors to the computer. The authors have thought thru the issues of elder learning and provided workable solutions for most of the problems many seniors have in learning tech subjects. The "Dummies" series book for seniors has much more info, but my seniors are overwhelmed by too much info. Stuur's book has the right amount. It may be a little too basic for people who have a good collection of basic skills already, but this comes with the territory. Some in my class have NEVER sat in front of a computer before. If we skip the absolute basics they'll be left behind (again!) The book is a great tool for the classroom. And when the students get home they have all the info in front of them again. Great for those that have short term memory problems.
Not exactly what I expected by .. Gisela Greulich (Cleveland, Ohio) The product was not exactly what I expected but I guess it is ok for some people. My husband did not like it very much and still had a hard time with it.
Basic skills training by .. Lee H. Heile (Central PA) This is a good self-paced training manual, although akward to handle. The step-by-step procedures are fine for XP and Vista, and easy to understand. Just the Internet...Just the facts...simple (few right clicks offered.)
I suggest teaching the E-Mail chapters BEFORE the SEARCH chapters, for that is what the students want.
Poor quality print and paper makes the screen shots a little hard to read, but the procedure is good.
"really helpful" by .. Chika Sekiguchi (Chicago) Says my mother in law, who has tried classes and a few other books. This was her favorite.

The Best Book On Email Marketing On The Market by .. M. Dalonzo () I have been making an awesome living for the past 5 years using the internet and creating databases of customers for my company and interacting with them is the oxygen to my revenue stream.
As much as I think myself as a well read web guy, this book not only schooled me about how to grow my customer list but the most important aspect is what to say to your customer's, much like a nerdy guy needs help on a first date with pretty girl and keeping her interested long after.
There aren'y many great books that will:
1. Be brutally honest on what it takes to make money on the Net
2. Actually give you a hype free(hear me, Joe Vitale and others) hand held instructions on being effective using the internet/email to market your business profitably.
My book has been ear-marked, written in, and full of side notes that I may need another copy. This is when you know the book is great and worth your hard earned money.
Thanks for opening my eyes and teaching me what I thought I knew.

Customer reviews Begginners? No. by .. Parker W. Snapp (Los Osos, CA) I don't think athe author of ny "beginner's" book realizes the state of mind of a "true" beginner, with only the book for help.
A true beginner wants to know:
How do I turn it on? How do I turn it off when I am finished? What do I do with initial pop ups from security, the computer store? An uunknown source and purpose? How do I get to e-mail?
If a knowledgeable helper gets the beginner past these blocks, the book is very good as a "look it up" book.
clearly written without too much technical detail by .. Help for the Computer Shy (Brunswick, Maine) This series is very popular with seniors at my public library. The writers clearly understand the needs of their target audience. This book in particular is exceptionally well-written. The information is organized into meaningful sections and the book does not drown the reader in technical details that the readers do not need to know in order to accomplish their goals (i.e. surf the web and send & receive email messages).
excellent product by .. G. Holloway (Westbury, NY USA) this is the second manual I have purchased from this publisher. I have found this one to be as informative and easy to follow as I expected.

Think you know everything about e-mail? by .. A. Stafford (Oakland, CA) Like it or not, we live in a world of electronic communication. E-Mail: A Write It Well Guide is a practical and helpful guide for those who aren't totally familiar or comfortable with the medium as well as for those who use it routinely, but perhaps not always effectively or appropriately. Most important, it urges people to take their e-mail communication as seriously as their other written communication - and tells them how.

The Truth About Email Marketing by .. Dr. Tami Brady (Calgary, Canada) When someone mentions email marketing the first thing that tends to pop into our head is spam. We all hate spam and are inundated with spam on a daily basis. Just the notion of becoming an email marketing expert is offensive.

Often they are full of valuable information, tips, discounts, etc. Moreover, they are extremely convenient. Really these newsletters and company updates hey are just about the furthest thing from spam.
This is what true email marketing is about: building newsletters and company updates that are useful to those who want to receive them.
