Product Description This interactive package (complete with a book, an instructional CD, a wall chart poster, a guitar pick and three sheets of fretboard stickers) equips the novice with everything he or she needs--short of an electric guitar and an amplifier--to become competent to play in a band within three months. The course is divided into twelve weekly lessons. Each lesson outlines the objectives of the week ahead and concludes with one of twelve specially commissioned backing tracks over which the novice can use the newly learned techniques. The book concludes with tips how to get the right sound from a guitar, amplifier and effects, as well as tips on forming a band, playing live and recording. If you've ever wanted to play in the band instead of just watching it, now you can! Customer reviews great alternative learning style by .. Amber H. / makeup enthusiast (Austin TX) Okay so the pictures of the guy in white sneakers are super dumb- but the book IS very helpful for a beginner; It comes with small stickers to place underneath the strings to practice fingering per different color stickers numbered 1-5 indicating 1st, second, third... fingering- you get the idea; I wrote on the stickers the letter of each note so I wouldn't have to remember which colors indicated which notes; and the stickers come off clean with no residue; this is just an added bonus- b/c I initially bought this book over others- b/c it shows pictures of a players' hand with fingers on the correct frets along with the actual chart; Personally, it is much easier for me to look at a picture of someone playing the note rather than a chart with dots.And as I said the stickers make it a breeze- I don't have to look down every time I want to play a note to see if my fingers are in the right place. Also the book comes with a pic and a full length poster labeled "notes and scales" to refer to for all of the notes.I haven't really read through the book- I'm a scimmer anyway- and the first chapter is all about positioning and tuning- which I already know; But if you are a visual learner- and have had trouble in the past- get this book to start with; It's definitely learn at your own pace- and doesn't remind me of a boring text book- other authors should be as innovative;
and yes it seems he numbers the strings backwards -but to each his own I guess- and with the stickers and pictures for reference, this has not confused me.
I have been trying to learn guitar for forever- but the sheer boredom of most teaching styles has turned me off- this is straight to the point- no "hot cross buns"- and perfect for an ADD brain like mine to scim and take what information I need to build a foundation and learn my own way.
The String Diagrams are 100% correct, great book by .. B. Walker () I'm am an instructor and I am considering using this book. The string numbering convention is no different from any other guitar book. This book provides a structured schedule, cd examples, a chord poster and jam tracks. More books should be like this one.
String numbers 1-6? by .. J. M. Adamik (Dallas area -Texas) The guy that wrote that the book had it all wrong about string numbering (which is string #1 vs string #6)...well, the standard way of noting which string is which, for the last, I dunno, couple hundred years, is this: if you are playing the guitar normally (right handed) then the book is absolutely correct: strings are numbered from 1-6 with number one being the string of highest pitch and which is the one closest to the floor...number six would be the lowest pitch bass string, the one closest to the player's thumb or you could say closest to the player's head. I have a degree in classical guitar performance, but that isn't necessary, as it is something learned in the first lesson.
You are never to old to learn something new by .. A. Tolk (Virginia, USA) I played acoustic guitar for a couple of years and recently started to play electric as well (Les Paul). For me, this book gave me a very good start showing the basics of playing electric guitar. Yes, the method used in the book is not the most usual one, but - hey - it is consistent and easy to understand if you are open minded ... and still easier than to learn notes in detail. Summary: Not the best book ever written, but good value for this price.
THIS IS A TERRIBLE BOOK. by .. () Please don't buy it. I'd been hacking guitar myself trying to teach it to myself for the last few months. The diagrams run THE EXACT OPPOSITE, of what a real guitar chord chart is supposed to look like. I'm telling you whoever said this was a confusing book was right on target. I've since been jamming with friends, learning on my own, and taking lessons.. and had to unlearn months worth of work, because the guitar strings in the book are the "opposite" of what you would think that they are.. For example, string 6 is the string that is closest to you in the book. string 1 is the string that is closest to you using a regular chord chart. This book sucks..... IF the diagrams had been right, the book would have been right on.... but the diagrams will confuse you so badly that the book is hardly worth the purchase.. go buy a video, or find a tutor rather than purchase this book.

Product Description A complete step-by-step guide to building an electric guitar—from the initial design to assembly and wiring—with clear instructions, full-size plans, and more than 400 color photos. Customer reviews All around good guide by .. D. Musto (San Jose, CA) I really enjoyed this book However, I wish someone wouldn't assume that we're all electrical engineers who can read schematics. I would have liked to have seen a simple, well illustrated section on pickup and control wiring not in schematic form. Well thought out and illustrated in the wood portions and easy to follow but I still don't know how to wire up the electronics.
THIS IS THE ONE! by .. Matthew Lau () I used this to build my first electric and it made it SO easy! I will never play a production guitar again!
How to destroy a very good book. by .. Georgios Polychronopoulos () Top rated helping constuction manual and guide, very good colour photos, nice presentation overall and just about 1/6th of a page about guitar finishing (painting e.t.c.).
Why, why, why?
Electric guitar construction by .. Robert S. Henderson (Southlake, TX USA) I purchased three recommended books on electric solid body guitar construction. Hiscock's book is more complete and informative but this one came in 2nd. If I wanted to build the guitar described in this book, it gets the job done. It's less complete if you have another design concept in mind.
Build Your Own Electric Guitar: Complete Instructions & Full Size Plans by .. M. Pirttimäki (Helsinki, Finland) This is the best electric guitar builder's guide that I have ever seen, especially for new builders like me. Very good colour photos.

Product Description Everything from the first steps of design to the final set-up of of solid-body, hollow-body and semi-acoustic electric guitars is covered step by step in this book. It contains a section about winding your own pickups and another on active guitar electronics. The last chapter is about visits to Steve Jarman Guitars (UK), Sadowsky Guitars (US) and PRS-Guitars (US) Customer reviews No aspiring luthier should be without this book. by .. J. Crisman (Cambridge MA USA) I recently purchased this book and I'm impressed at the breadth of information meticulously presented within this book, including how to make your own pickups and how to prepare your wood if you happen to be gung ho enough to saw your own lumber.
I'm not exactly sure how a few others drew the conclusion that this book was poorly organized since my copy seems to be organized clearly enough, unless they have earlier printings. The illustrations and images in my copy seem to be clear enough too as I suspect the author has applied a great deal of effort to tweak later printings to improve his book.
The only downside is that one needs a bit of patience when reading, since Koch is so detailed. This book isn't exactly "Guitar Building for Dummies." On the other hand, patience can be a life and limb saver when operating sharp power tools--so think of his book as a lesson in Zen as well as in lutherie.
As Promised by .. 6ontherun (Porterville, Ca USA) Book arrived in excellent condition within the time frame stated. My son was very excited and is working on building his first guitar.
Good book sets fire to the nation. by .. J. Nagel (Midwest USA) I purchased this book to aide me in my quest to produce a solid body electric ukulele. I'm having some difficulty understanding the electronics but every other part is easy to understand.
Nearly perfect. by .. R. Wisdom (Beebe, AR United States) Wow, there is a lot of info packed into this book. I agree with most of the other reviewers in that the appearance could be improved. Photos aren't as good as they need to be, but Mr. Koch does a great job of explaining things and the written content is excellent. The only other weak spot, for me, was not enough wiring info for the semi-acoustic version, which is what I intend to build. However, Mr. Koch is accessible and he graciously answered my questions. I'm well pleased with this book.

Glad I have it by .. Neil C. Summers (Mt. Airy, MD United States) I am in the final stages of my first electric guitar. Just about another 10 coats on the neck and a little wiring. Terrible pictures, great info. I find myself refering to Melvyn Hiscock's book (Make Your Own Electric Guitar 2nd edition) for the great (how to) photos and schematics. Both books were a great help. HINT... If this is your first guitar, DON'T use poly-urathane on the neck or body. The book says don't also. So I did. Looks OK now but would have saved me alot of hours if I used lacquer as recomended. I am using autobody (spray can) clear on the neck and it looks great. Have fun

Product Description The electric guitar is the musical instrument of the last 30 years. In that time, names like Fender and Gibson have acquired an aura--and a price--that are truly remarkable. For some, however, it is not enough to buy a guitar--the challenge of designing and hand-making a unique, customized instrument is the dream. Since 1986, these people have turned to one book: Make Your Own Electric Guitar. Written in a clear, relaxed style, it covers every facet of guitar design and construction, as well as electronic theory and practice, and full woodworking and wiring techniques--all supported with plenty of photos and diagrams. Now in a revised and expanded edition, Make Your Own Electric Guitar will enable any musician or enthusiast with basic woodworking skills to create a uniquely valuable instrument. Customer reviews Read this before building your first guitar by .. Steve West (Burleson, TX) Excellent book for building and electric guitar. The instructions are wonderfully clear. There is also loads of general guitar information you'll pick up as you read through it.
Worth reading for any guitar enthusiast whether you or not you are considering building one yourself.
Make your own electric guitar by .. Mark Kromodimoeljo (Victoria Australia) This is quite an informative book for a beginner electric guitar or other electric instrument maker. There are three chapters which follow the course of making two guitars and a bass, and different neck/ body constructions are covered pretty well through these instructional examples. Different techniques for different applications are examined. I think the structure could be more logical and progressive for this book, but it's not a major detraction. I think that there could be a more fundamental analysis of constructing a guitar rather than basing the work on traditional and contemporary practices. In this way guitar makers could come up with there own ideas and approaches, but overall it's a good book in a subject area that seems pretty scant for want of information. Also sometimes the author is a little misleading for the sake of telling a joke, for instance about 'bashing in' frets. It could be edited better.
Excellent book by .. Les E. Strongman (Minnesota) I am a hobby builder and, like many, I suppose, had made some beginner mistakes and was unsure of some proper techniques. This book is excellent whether you are building a guitar from scratch and making every part by hand, or using some ready made parts (perhaps neck and body) then assembling and setting up an instrument yourself. The wiring section is particularly helpful, both for builders and repair people. The book is written in a self effacing, witty British style. Lots of good photographs and diagrams are included as well.
Good reference, but not great. by .. Anthony Smith (Salt Lake City, Utah) This book does have useful information and reference, but is not the 'Fantastic', 'Electric guitar bible', that it has been touted to be here and on luthier sites.
Book is organized logically, but it doesn't exactly flow, and even though some bits are humorous it doesn't make up for drab writing. Melvin is a great builder and does make nice guitars.
The book probably is worth the money for the first time builder, but not for someone who has built one or two already.
Good book when it stays on the topic by .. Marty Peduncle (Cleveland OH) Fed up with my local musical instrument retailers, I set out to build my very own guitar armed with this book: Make Your Own Electric Guitar by Melvyn Hiscock. I have to say I learned A LOT from this book, it's got a lot of very detailed information. However as an absolute beginner to this art who has a lot of questions, I can say it has some shortcomings.
For one, as another reviewer mentioned, there are way too may pages spent babbling on about the history of the electric guitar. This would all be fine and good, BUT it is mixed in with the instructional text, so there's no way to skip over it or read around it. It's not like you can just skim until you find what you need because when building a guitar, missing the slightest detail can leave you completely screwed. You actually have to read it all to get the details you need, and it isn't always interesting or relevant. The history content should have been separated from the instructional text, the net result is a book that is not very clear or concise.
Secondly, I hope you're a fan of Fender and/or Gibson, because the entire book is centered around them. You'll learn the history of these two brands from the very first one built onwards. Also all the specs for the building are based on those of Fender and Gibson. I don't mind this, as I am a fan of both, but this book does not give an answer-all formula for any style guitar, if such a thing exists.
Melvyn describes the craft in a very great amount of detail and he is very honest, but to me the book was more discouraging than anything. Perhaps I could save you some time right now before you even buy this:
-To build a guitar you need some ABOVE AVERAGE woodworking skills. If you just woodwork in your spare time or you never have, do not even attempt this.
-You need a lot of tools that I can almost gaurantee you don't have in readily available to you.
-Building your own guitar wil NOT save you money. You will most likely end up spending more money than you would on a brand new guitar.
Those are just a few of the many things you should be aware of perhaps even prior to purchasing this book. Hope this was helpful, thanks for reading!

Miller (Hixson, TN) Since I am new to the world of buying guitars, this book has been
invaluable source of information on dates of guitar manufacturing, prices, and condition of guitars. Real Handy!!
The bible of guitar pricing by .. D. Musto (San Jose, CA) I've used this book for years for all my guitar buying and selling needs along with the Vintage Guitar Guide. My only complaint is that they have yet to add many of the smaller niche guitar makers over the years and the burgeoning market in house brands is not well covered ( Airline, Supro, etc). Otherwise it has most of the information you'll ever need. Don't take the pricing as the absolute word though, the market fluctuates a lot and prices can be dramatically above or below what is quoted in this book. Use it as a baseline and you're fine, at least you'll always know if that guitar your friend or neighbor wants to sell you is junk or of some value.
Blue Book of Electric Guitars by .. Louis J. Paliani () Needed reference if you have anything to do with guitars. Well done and helps to peg odd guitars.
excellent guide by .. Daniel A. Kiceleff (Buenos Aires, ARGENTINA) This is an excellent guide for serious buyers & sellers of musical instruments, and gives a fair appraisal of their market's value (in this case, electric guitars) together with historical information & background.
price guide by .. B. Vinson (Menifee,CA) Some prices are above what they actually sell for (priced too high) well some prices are below market on EBAY anyway.
Also they need to expand some area's such as Harmony,Yamaha,Taylor and Blueridge, excellent overall guide to Acoustic Guitars aand there prices.
Blue book has set the standard for all.
They do an excellent job on Gibson and Martin both but too little info on small names.
Maybe i should write a book of Yamaha Acoustic Guitars?
These are very popular on EBAY and are considered the poor man's Martin, which includes me by the way.
Good amount on the history of companies that Manufacture Guitars which i find interesting, facts most people do not know or realize.
Gives buyer's the uphand on what price to pay for what condition,as well as an very good examples shown in pictures.
I would rate this a 5 but there is too much info missing in there guide which forces me to use several.I wish some day they could make this more complete so i only need to buy one.But otherwise i depend on it.
If you do not own this you are either a genius with one of the best memories on this planet or you are operating in the dark ages.

Nice to just leave out to grab every once in a while.
Electric Guitars by .. Susan D. Brager (Perry, OH) I picked up this book for my son, who is a "guitar freak".
Knowing very little about guitars myself, I'm not that qualified to review this book. I can report, however, that my son was delighted with this gift. He said that he spent hours going through it, learning things he didn't know, and that he particulary enjoyed the illustrations. Anyone who is very interested in guitars would be delighted to have this book!
Very good reference book by .. S. Breitlow (Winona, MN USA) The book spans all the major and many of the odd brand electric guitars. The book contains no basses. The photos are excellent, including many vintage instruments. The history is inclusive but doesn't go too deep since this is a complete overview of all brands. The variations are detailed well over the lifespan of the product. I also like the reference to who may have used the instrument over the years. If there is an instrument you are trying find out about it is most likely in this book.
Oops! by .. J. van den Oever (Netherlands) I bought this book and later I bought "Totally Guitar" by Tony Bacon. Then I noticed the latter had incorporated all of this Illustrated Encyclopedia (of which Bacon is co-author) in his new book. So with Totally Guitar Totally Guitar: The Definitive Guide you get two books for the price of one.
If you're only looking for Guitar models, the Illustrated History is brilliant, but if you're looking for a lot more on the side for the same dollars, try Totally Guitar.

Product Description This book offers an in-depth analysis of the many components of guitar tone. How does an ash body differ from alder? Which bridge hardware maximizes body resonance? How do Gibson P-90 pickups differ from Fender Jazzmaster pickups? Designed for veterans and beginners alike, Electric Guitar Sound helps any player understand the myriad kinds of wood, hardware, and electronics available and pick a guitar with a tone and feel that is just right for them. Customer reviews super book by .. G. Gemmill (Coldwater, Mi.) This is an excellent book for the novice or decent guitar player. Probably a little boring for someone who's been at it for awhile. Well written. Does great comparisons to help you with purchasing equipment that will do what you want.
A good overwiew on different styles and makes of the electric guitar by .. Thomas Schrader (Germany) There's hardly anything new in Dave Hunter's book, still it's a pretty good overview and compilation of info that you otherwise would have to seek in several different publications. He describes the characteristics of different styles of electric guitars and goes into detail how these affect their tone and playability. Tone woods, construction, type of finish, pickups and electronics and other factors are mentioned, some in great detail and why and how they work together. After an initial chapter on the main ingredients that go into designing and building an electric, the other chapters are dedicated to different model families (bolt-on solid body, set neck solid body etc.), how they have been developed by their designers and respective companies and what is responsible for their unique sounds. Some details that can be crucial to a guitar's tone are missing here, like the effect that different pots, caps or hardware parts can have and I'd wish they would have been covered more extensively. I have also detected a couple of factual errors that should be corrected in a future issue. The neck of a Gibson ES 335 joins the body at the 19th fret, not the 20th, a Les Paul is made with a tenon neck joint, not with a dovetail, like in acoustic guitar construction and that a 1953 Gibson ES 175 is supposed to have a 3-piece maple neck is very very questionable among experts.
Other than that, if you don't have many books on the history and construction of electric guitars or never can have enough of them (like me), this is a good read and reference.

Product Description “Besides quality of production (it’s printed entirely on heavy paper stock and features full-color photos throughout), [the book] excels in the simplicity of its presentation: the instructions are logical and well detailed, and they promote use of common tools and easily acquired materials. Highly recommended.”— Library Journal. Customer reviews Great book for demystifying the process by .. M. Haddix (Austin, TX) If you'd like to build your own guitar, but nervous about the steps, this is a great place to start. The book is an easy read, it provides clear photographs and instructions, and it gives sufficient detail to understand each of the steps to designing and building your guitar. As noted by some reviews, the book does not dictate your design by giving you the dimensions of every cut (after all if you're building a custom guitar, why copy someone else's), but it does do a good job giving you the critical dimensions that relate to any guitar design.
You may also want Martin Koch's Building Electric Guitars, it's not as easy to read, but it does provide more information.
To the point, informative, easy to follow. by .. Neil Smith (Las Vegas) I recommend this book to experienced repair persons looking to get into building. The book covers all the basics of tools, preparation, design & layout, template making, body making, neck making, hand rubbed finish, electronic installation and setting up.
The main point of the book is to give you the tools and knowledge to build your OWN guitar rather than just to hobby shop someone elses design together. If you're a beginner or hobbiest I recommend Oakhams book. It doesn't leave anything to the imagination and includes complete full sized plans for a strat.
But for the skilled craftsman this book will have you building your own designs in no time at all.
Nice pictures - but not enough to build by .. () I just purchased this book based on reviews read on Amazon. I would not at all reccomend this book. The book does have a nice layout and a lot of great pictures..... but thats it - a pretty book it is but the drawings and technical illistrations you need to build it are not included.... IMPORTANT things like neck thickness, neck thickness at the neck joint, any many other important things are not covered at all. A dimentioned neck end, and neck pocket detail are not even included. A body layout is shown and again not dimentioned. The only dimentions that are given are for a template to route the pickup and bridge holes... The most important topics are barely covered like setting the neck and bolting it on, alignment etc..... Nice - but I would not tell anyone to buy this book,
Great Book! by .. () This book is the best of its type. I have seen two guitars built from the instructions in this book and they were beautiful, sounded great, and felt wonderful to play. This book has easy to follow directions, great photos and directions, and has an interesting history of guitars at the beginning. I would highly recommend this book to anyone wishing to build their own guitar.
Meets its mark. by .. Bernard Jene (Harvest, AL) This book is intended as a starting point for the first-time guitar builder and it does its job well. Step by step processes to construct both a six string electric guitar and a four string bass guitar. Topics covered include wood selection, tools, electronic components and construction. There is even a small part on playing. While there is certainly many more avenues to take in the guitar building arena, this book will get you started by taking you through the entire process for two solid quality pieces. From there...you can certainly choose further research alternatives.

Product Description The Gibson Electric Guitar Book is a comprehensive, richly illustrated guide to Gibson electrics past and present. Starting with the ES-150 - generally acknowledged as the first commercially successful electric guitar - through the 335s, Les Pauls, SGs, Firebirds, and more, it is packed with facts, stories, and images that tell the story of Gibson's great guitars and their most famous and influential players. Customer reviews Interesting book but something's missing... by .. MLao () The text is insightful and the pictures are beautiful.
However, most real fanatics will want more than the usual stuff that is regularly covered in guitar magazines. Many models are missing and some of them are covered too briefly.
This book is a broad overview of the history of Gibson's electric guitars. In my opinion, there isn't enough in here to satisfy the real fans. It is nonetheless a beautiful book.
Wonderful Book about a distinctly American musical instrument company by .. Anthony M. Tedeschi (Glen Cove, NY USA) This book is a must read for any electric guitar fanatic, required reading for any Gibson fans. Not only does it take you through the ups and downs, trials and tribulations, innovations and failures of this storied stringed instrument company, it puts all that within the historical perspective of what was going on at Gibson's major competitors at the time, Fender chief among them. Clearly Carter, once historian for Gibson, knows wherefore he speaks. And the photos of Gibson electric guitars as they morph through their history is worth the price of the book. Loved it.

Crisman (Cambridge MA USA) This book certainly is useful for an aspiring luthier to have on one's bookshelf as it walks one through building a solid body guitar. I'd recommend buying a discounted or used copy though, since other books in a comparable price range tend to give more information. The price probably has to do more with being a Hal Leonard book with glossy cover and color photography, then being a comprehensive guitar building grimoire. Martin Koch's book may be a better buy though the difficulty curve may be a bit higher.
However to Hirst's credit, his book is geared toward the aspiring luthier with limited woodworking experience.
A good book but expensive. by .. Ian Hawley (Redcliffe,, Queensland. Australia) This book is a glossy well illustrated guide to building an electric guitar. It has lots of wonderful tips and great pictures of guitar making. The book has terrific information on tone woods,Pickups, and guitar wiring. The one critism I have of this book is that it reads in parts like a commercial for STEWMAC I agree that they are great suppliers of guitar parts and and and all the tools anyone would ever need to build a guitar.Does the author really have to appear wearing one of their branded aprons. Do your self a favour buy the Melvyn Hiscock book it is a little more comprehensive and is written with a bit of humour and style.
