Product Description

Always harmful and potentially deadly, eating disorders can wreak havoc on families. Unfortunately, the same can often be said of their treatment: blaming parents for the illness, many eating disorder programs exclude parents and widen the rift in an already shattered family. This powerful and controversial book by top researchers James Lock and Daniel le Grange argues that parents are not the culprits but the key to their teen's recovery. Based on new research, Help Your Teenager Beat an Eating Disorder shows how parents can break the disorder's control over their child's mind and re-establish normal eating and family relations. The odds for full recovery drop precipitously if treatment is delayed. A radically important wake up call, this book urges parents to act now.

An Important Read 5 by .. baw (Jackson, WY USA)
Anorexia is a life-threatening disease. It can also cause many long-term health problems. If your child has an eating disorder, it is very important to get professional help, quickly. This book stresses that fact. It is not a self-help book, but it does help one to understand the disease and the long road to recovery. It also includes a list of clinics that specialize in teenage eating disorders.

Excellent resource for parents and clinicians 5 by .. Amacfr (Raleigh, NC)
This book is an excellent resource for both parents and clinicians. I am a marriage and family therapist and often work with adolescents and their families. This book provides practical advice for parents and can be a helpful adjunct to family therapy with the eating disordered individual.

Gets to the point!! 5 by .. A.B. (Middle East)
This book is such a relief!! Unlike other books that go on and on about what eating disorders are and their causes and types and so on, this book actually tells you how to act. It tells you exactly how to deal with your teenager and how to behave around them.

Very Informative Book 4 by .. Jade (California)
Of the books I've read about eating disorders, this is probably the most informative one regarding explanations of what eating disorders are. This is an excellent resource for anyone with a young child or teenager with an eating disorder. I did find their advice about leaving your job to stay home with your child or going to their school to eat with them to be a bit impractical, but overall think the book is a valuable resource.

Successful approach to recovery 5 by .. M. Webb ()
I found this book extremely helpful. It is very easy to understand and provides key information to helping teenagers recover from eating disorders using a new approach that includes parents and other family members supporting strategies to recovery,

Awesome... 5 by .. E. Guilamo (NY, NY USA)
This is a great book for anyone who wants to learn more about eating disorders for a class or for anyone who is suffering or has a loved one suffering with this disorder. I ordered it for a graduate class and can honestly say that this will be a book that I will keep in my library.

Excellent book 5 by .. M. Ruth Stine ()
This book provides an excellent overview of many aspects of eating disorders and their treatment. Carolyn Costin is extremely insightful and knowledgable about the subject and she writes in a clear, accessible way.

The book also is full of case examples that demonstrate the theories/treatment interventions she talks about. These are usually brief and easy to understand. Both her understanding of eating disorders and the treatment interventions she uses are translateable and quite useful in the treatment of eating disordered patients.

Surviving an Eating Disorder 4 by .. Diana (West Hartford, CT USA)
This book has helped me better understand eating disorders. I would recommend it to anyone who needs information.
The book was received in great condition and in a timely manner.

Target audience: the ED uneducated 4 by .. Bethany Haid (Columbia, MO)
I was surprised to read the reviews for this book. It is actually effective at what it is designed to do: teach friends and family of those who have an ED about the condition. It is not for those who have had a college course in body image disorders or those who are currently seeking treatment - there are much better resources available that will be of a much higher interest to you and will have more in depth info.

I mailed this book to my mother, mother-in law, and college friend when I decided to go into recovery. It is small and unassuming. It is easy to read. It isn't threatening or verbose. I think its a good start in the right direction.

Very informative 5 by .. Agnes Nevin ()
This was recommended by my daughter's physician and I found it to be the most informative of the very many books on ED that I have read.

Definitely not for sufferers 2 by .. Janet Morris (Huntsville, AL USA)
I got this book without reading the subtitle (Strategies for Family and Friends). I thought it might help me with Binge-Eating problems. It didn't. In fact, I got very bored. It was sickeningly boring and only discussed how to handle things if you weren't really all that involved.

First of all, it's my experience with any kind of mental health problem that you can't give a person help if they don't want the help. They have to make a conscious effort to choose to get help. This book somewhat bypasses this whole thing.

Second, it states what you typically see in an Anorexic -- loss of weight, not eating, etc. Okay, who doesn't know this? If you didn't know this, then you probably wouldn't be picking up the book in the first place.

I really don't think this book would be helpful if I had a friend or family member with an eating disorder. It's very unhelpful in my personal opinion.

written specifically for family and friends 4 by .. ()
This is a good book designed for the friends and family of eating disorder sufferers. Before I gave this book to my familiy, I read it myself. I liked that the authors suggested therapy/counseling for friends and family, who can sometimes feel helpless watching their loved one suffer with an eating disorder. There was also a lot of focus on parents. That's good for many, but my family is not a problem in my case. When I gave this book to my family, I told them to ignore that chapter since it did not pertain to us. The information provided within the book helped my family understand what I'm going through, and for that I am thankful. I didn't know how to get the words out to explain the eating disorder. This book helped me tell my family of my disorder.

Acclaim for Peggy Claude-Pierre's
The Secret Language of Eating Disorders

"Peggy Claude-Pierre has gone beyond the surface of eating disorders to discover their true causes and then present a valid and healing path. In this extremely constructive book, she offers incredible insights into the mind of the sufferer and the myths of eating disorders." --Keith J. Karren, Ph.D.,
Department Chair, Health Sciences,
Brigham Young University

"Peggy Claude-Pierre is a warrior--ferocious and relentless--whose work has rescued a decade of sufferers." --Edward Feller, M.D., F.A.C.P.,
Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine,
Brown University School of Medicine

"Peggy Claude-Pierre has created a paradigm shift in the way we view and treat anorexia. Peggy has shifted the focus of care from that of controlling the symptoms of disordered eating to healing the negativity that would otherwise plague the individual for the rest of his or her life. I have developed the utmost respect for her, for I realize that she has translated the secret language of anorexia. Now it is up to us to use the knowledge she has revealed."
--Daniel J. Smith, M.D.

"Peggy Claude-Pierre's work begins where attachment to the limiting obstacles of theory end. She has brought back from the dead many young lives the world deemed hopeless. . . . There are many who possess the title of 'doctor' who have never come close to her incredible example of the selfless healer."

Some important info is missing, and she takes credit for discovering a classic concept 3 by .. MattOKC (Oklahoma City, OK United States)
I found this book to be quite helpful in explaining the Negative and Actual minds of the ED sufferer. However, I also feel that Peggy takes credit for her dazzling discovery of what is actually a classic concept in psychology: cognitive self-talk. Her tendency to anthropomorphize this self-talk (complete with its own name, gender, personality, tactics, and rituals) doesn't make it any more innovative than what CBT therapists have always known: that sufferers of ED tend to negatively filter incoming stimuli and engage in exaggerated attacks against themselves using aggressive and cruel self-talk. Okay, so she's validated decades of research; where does that leave the reader?

Well, once Peggy has finished complimenting herself for this rediscovery, she makes an important contribution in her ability to EXPLAIN this conventional (and old chestnut) concept very, very clearly. For a lay-person looking to understand the role of self-talk and how to thwart it, Peggy's book may be the ticket: she didn't pioneer the concept, perhaps, but she illustrates it well. And she also does a remarkable job empowering families not to passively accept doom-and-gloom prognoses from jaded or unskilled doctors.

Having said that, here are some problems I see in her book:
1) She never even uses the word "Serotonin" in the entire book, despite mountains of emerging evidence that Anorectic sufferes have a very specific flaw in their serotonin system that causes a paradoxic "anxiety effect" with serotonin increases, causing the sufferer to starve down these levels.

2) The discussion of treatment is centered around children. She uses the noun "child" to describe her patients in treatment, which may alienate the reader who is concerned with an adult sufferer.

3) The discussion of treatment tends to be an infomercial for her center, which isn't very helpful to the reader because it costs $1000/day and has a fifteen-year waiting list, according to information online as of today (July 17, 2008).

4) She is experienced working with ED, but other than an early reference in the book to her intention of getting her Doctorate, she never returns to the topic of clinical qualifications--hers or her staff's--except to assure the reader that they are trained and competent.

5) Unless the family of an ED sufferer is prepared (and wealthy enough) to admit the victim to inpatient treatment for up to two years, there is little-to-no information about options for the rest of us. You know, the ones who make "regular" incomes. The ones who need to make efforts in outpatient settings. There is no advice, for example, to therapists (such as myself, an LCSW) who read the book about steps WE can take to implement strategies that work. The gist of her writing seems to be: Here are mistakes therapists and doctors tend to make, and this, therefore, is why my inpatient approach is pretty much your best hope.

If You're Struggling and Need Help... 5 by .. Rebecca Cooper (CA)
Are you seeking an answer?

Though this Book isn't a "cure all", it does answer some questions you may have. Questions such as:

"Why do I/my daughter/my son/my wife hate herself?"
"What can I do to help myself (or him/her)?"
"What have others done that may apply to me (or him/her)?"
"What methods/actions should I take to help my/their future?"
etc etc...

This book is pretty big (not huge) but it's pact full of useful information. Peggy even shares information of the many rehabilitation center's she has set up in and around the country and shares success stories of her own patients (without disclosing their names).

Having gone through this struggle myself in High School (when I bought the book), and even re-reading this book to date - it still sits on my shelf where it will remain because it IS useful. It does give life-changing information that WILL help you.

If you have a question about eating disorders, it has the answer. :)

Absolutely Insightful 5 by .. E. Crawford (marietta, ga)
Working on recovery of my own, I found this book wonderfully validating and insightful. I never knew that others had the same thoughts that consumed my mind and not only did this book show me that others were out there, it showed me there were people in this world who not only understood those girls but who even loved those girls unconditionally.

Although unable to finish the book since I am unable to deem myself somehow worthy of ridding myself of this ED, I have shared it with those closest with me to try to help them understand where I am coming from and what I am struggling with.

I know others bash this author for not having formal training - but no matter what I say she has absolutly amazing insight into the Eating Didsordered mind.

A friend to the isolated 5 by .. Nina Couser (Italy)
I found this book a light in the dark. Claude-Pierre writes with extreme sensitivity and empathy on a killer disease which in fact kills because its victims are so sensitive. She manages to articulate on what others seem to miss i.e. that anorexia is not merely about feeling fat, or having a distorted body image but correctly identifies the 'other voice' as being the real poison within the sufferer. This book gave me the strength to get well and I know that other sufferers will find in it a source of real help and comfort. Words alone cannot praise this book enough. Suffers and non-sufferers alike must read it.

The Secrets Exposed 5 by .. Howard S. Serlick (Philadelphia, PA, USA)
Author Claude-Pierre explains in layman's terms the mechanics of eating disorders. This greatly helped me to understand the mindset of the sufferer and seriousness of these types of disorders. The book offers a through explanation of symptoms, who is at risk, treatment, advice and support to family and friends of sufferers. In addition, there are some excellent references for reading materials and websites for help and support.

Product Description

Aimee Liu's memoir Solitaire, America's first first- person account of a young woman's battle with anorexia, was published in 1979. At the time, she thought her battle was over, but a relapse in 2000 prompted her to reinvestigate the subject. Now, three decades after her initial recovery, Liu shares her story and those of her peers who are still struggling to understand the role anorexia and bulimia have played in their lives. Combining personal interviews with cutting-edge research on the origins and course of eating disorders, Liu shatters many commonly held notions about these diseases. Societal pressure, popular culture, and family dysfunction cannot "make" one anorexic; it takes a particular genetic predisposition and temperament. Readers will learn who is susceptible to eating disorders and why, how these diseases can waste sufferers' lives in ways that have nothing to do with food or weight, and why recovery requires more than good nutrition. Both instructive and emotionally powerful, Liu's narrative is destined to be a classic in the field of eating disorders.

Very relatable. 5 by .. J. Williams (Seattle, WA United States)
I found this book very relatable and interesting. I felt like she was talking about me which was incredible. If you are trying to come to terms with an eating disorder of your past this is the book for you. I was anorexic in high school and as an adult I finally needed to recognize the problem fully. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to better understand an eating disorder, especially anorexia.

Amazing read 5 by .. graceface ()
This was a fantastic and inspiring book. Aimee gives a good mix about real stories from the women she knew growing up with eating disorders as well as some new research in the field of eating disorders. Brilliant writing, and for people who feel lost like I do, this book gives a glimpse that there is light at the end of the tunnel. I will definitely read this one again.

One of the best books on this topic 5 by .. Stella Porto (Alpharetta, GA)
I recommend this book to anyone with a history of anorexia or bulimia nervosa. It is well written and promotes healthy insights about one's condition, psychological predisposition and family context. I have read Caroline Knapp's book - Appetites, which I found to be excellent too. I also recommend Sensing the Self. All the others I have seen are not worth the time... This one, if not the best, is among them... Aimee Liu intertwines stories, including her own, in a way that holds you close, helping us also 'connect the dots' while reading the book. It helps us be more open in finding out about our own stories and how it matches this growing population of people with eating disorders. I found extremely useful!

Great book! 4 by .. LpLove (minnesota)
As someone working towards recovery from an ED, this book is an amazing read. I can relate to the experiences of the author. Beyond that, the information (some scientific, some observational, all GOOD) she presents and her retrospective look at her previous book from the '70's, is golden information. Considering how uncertain people feel about the future after an ED, a window into what it could be like instills hope! Thanks!

Very good, but don't compare and despair 3 by .. Gina in Minnesota ()
When I started reading this book, just a quarter of the way into it, I was very excited and hopeful that this could be one of the best books out there on EDs because it focused a lot on recovery, and using real life examples. Reading about solutions instead of just epidemics and hopeless stats was refreshing.

The insight into people's personality traits was especially helpful. I bookmarked many passages with little post-it flags because so many things were right on.

I had to knock off two stars for one reason only--the height and weight stats of most the women she interviewed. At first I didn't notice but the more into the book I read, it became very distracting. First of all, height and weight does NOT paint an instant mental picture of what someone looks like to me, anyway. I am not one of those carnival game workers who is trained to know what that looks like. I didn't understand why she couldn't have just described them as "underweight" or used adjectives instead of stats, or whatever.

I couldn't believe it when she ACTUALLY listed the height and weight of the DAUGHTER of a woman with ED and inserted the following commentary--"far from excessive". You could almost hear the subtext after that, "but, could still stand to lose a few pounds." Instead, she lets the quote of the mother's opinion to speak what the author is thinking. And I'm thinking, how many girls who happen to weigh MORE than that and are SHORTER are going to feel when they read that? Never mind that she goes on to say how our bodies are functional and don't define who we are and how fathers can help daughters feel good about themselves--the seed of self-doubt could be planted somewhere.

I noticed she also talked a lot about her own weight numbers throughout her various life stories, as though this says something on its own. It obviously does to the author, since she had an eating disorder and weight represents what was going on in her life at that point, but it doesn't mean a whole lot to the general audience. If she said, I was at X weight at that point I would think, so? I'm sorry, I forgot to memorize your height and I don't know what that means and how that adds to the story. All I needed to know was how healthy she was, really. And it was triggering to start thinking about my own height and how it compared, and I had to consciously tell myself to stop doing that.

It was disappointing that for all the self-awareness and sensitivity the author brings to the subject, this detail escaped her attention. I don't think she meant anything malicious about it, of course, just a sad side effect of how an ED mind operates, unfortunately, even after the harmful behaviors have ceased.

(if the author had any input in the ironic cover art--a photo of a bone-thin model in a joyous leap in a sheer dress on the beach--this would get two stars, especially because there is a whole chapter devoted to how media images equate thin women to success, health, and happiness)

Full of triggers 1 by .. L. R. Johns ()
In just the first two or three pages, the author uses specific (and extremely low) numbers to refer to "ideal" weights and calorie intakes. This, as any psychiatrist worth her salt will tell you, is one of the biggest triggers with whichyou could confront an anorexic -- recovering or not. If you have an ED (as I do, and I'm in recovery), this book will most likely make you very uncomfortable and throw a lot of hard-to-suppress triggers at you. I found myself falling back into malignant thought patterns as soon as my eyes registered the numbers the author had written. Read a different book. This one won't help you.

Nothing new 2 by .. JPF ()
The book is mostly a narrative of a personal history. It has few direct guidelines for recovery, and these are dispersed on that narrative. There are many other books that say the same things as this one.

Therapy in a book 5 by .. graceface ()
Though this book doesn't look like a New York Times Bestseller, the content an amazing compilation of the science and psychology behind eating disorders along with the author's own relatable journey through the process. Being a psychologist AND someone who's gone through an eating disorder herself, Susan understands how to convey the message to her readers. While explaining the psychology behind eating disorders, she also offers some practical ideas about how to change the disordered thinking... this is a great book that is a handy "therapy session" whenever you need some encouragement.

Pretty disappointing 2 by .. C. Ringel ()
After reading all the positive reviews for this book, I was pretty disappointed in the book....I found the book overly simplistic (she assumes the reader has zero knowledge about either psychology or eating disoders, which I would imagine is not true of most readers) and also found "Dr. Susie's" need to constantly pour out overly dramatic details from her own life somewhat annoying. I felt like she was having a written therapy session with the reader, only I didn't sign up to be her therapist. And I found her "just change your attitude and all will be OK" mantra a little silly. That being said, there were some good nuggets in there if you just kept reading; in particular, the quotes at the end of each chapter from her patients were helpful. All in all, I wouldn't recommend buying this book given the enormous number of other books out there on the subject.

Outstanding 5 by .. Erin Besecker (Dayton, Ohio)
I highly suggest this book for anyone who has an eating disorder, or cares about someone who is experiencing one. Dr. Mendelsohn is extremely knowledgable about the causes and mental battles of an eating disorder from a doctor's stand point, but also has fought one herself. What she shares about her own journey helped me see that good can come out of painful pasts. She has overcome and her perspective is amazing! You can hear her encouragement and care come through on each page of the book.

Excellent presentation of complex topics 5 by .. ()
As an internist, I am a little closer to the obesity side of things but I found the entire book informative and very easy to comprehend. The chapters are purposefully short to facilitate the episodic reading that is often the only reading possible in a busy practice. I particularly like Dr. Brownell's public health and environmental approach to the problem of obesity. This textbook is a great way for the uninitiated to "catch up" on the current concepts of obesity and eating disorders.

For Anyone with Weight Issues 5 by .. R. Ryder (Oregon)
I generally do not admit that I am obese and have been for most of my life nor do I write reviews. I do not think of myself as having an eating disorder as I am definitely not anorexic nor am I bulimic. However, I noticed that binge eating was included so I purchased this book.

Having read it from cover to cover, I would recommend it to anyone with weight issues. At a time when the news reinforces guilt in regards to obesity, this book does just the opposite. The author is compassionate and obviously knowledgeable. She examines the issues behind the eating (or non-eating) without blame and many of her points resonated for me. I was left feeling I could find an easier way to deal with life. That it would take work and committment but not dieting or will power.

It's been nearly two months since my first reading and I have found myself continuing to think about why I am eating and what I might do about why I am eating or, at least, instead of eating. I'd like to thank Susan Schulherr and let her know I'll be looking forward to another book.

Superb! 5 by .. Jill Pliskin (New York, USA)
What a superb and greatly needed book this is !! Ms Schulherr has written a complete, comprehensive, thoughtful and incredibly well organized explanation and exploration of eating disorders. Her book is easy to read and anticipates every possible question one might have about all aspects of eating disorders. Although she is direct and does not soft pedal the facts, she also presents her information in a form that is digestable (no pun intended) and useable. The serious scholarship employed in writing this book is evident. Clearly, an enormous amount of research and experience went in to writing it. Yet, it is human and reassuring; you feel Ms Schulherr is holding your hand and walking you through your reading. This book is a must for anyone with concerns about eating disorders or who is concerned about someone who might be struggling with one.

Down-to-earth Wisdom on Eating Disorders 5 by .. gail woods ()
This book is not only filled with practical down-to-earth wisdom on steps to take if you or a loved one suffers from an eating disorder, but the author makes us smile and laugh in the process. For example, she compares the person with an eating disorder to a magician--"who gets us to look over here" (at the food behaviors and fixations) "when the real action is over there" (with the difficult emotions or life problems the ED person vainly attempts to soothe or solve with food). Or, "it takes a village to create and eating disorder"--the author's way of introducing us to the cultural forces encouraging women and more and more men to become thinner and thinner contributing to the rising toll of eating disorders. Or, "what happened to make us think being thin is naturally superior?" Great question!

The author helps us visualize recovery as a process of integrating balanced eating without 'forbidden foods' or food restriction diets, attention to enjoyable exercise and your body's own set-point, and avoiding the mental minefield of thoughts like "everything will be better when I'm thin". She's not afraid to tell us that willpower "never works with eating disorder symptoms".

As a pychotherapist who often encounters eating issues in my practice, I wholeheartedly recommend Ms. Schulherr's book to anyone who wants to find hope for recovery from an eating disorder, and also to professionals in the field who would like a comprehensive guide to eating disorder symptoms, and treatment options.

A treasure-trove of information 5 by .. Dr. Deborah Rinzler (New York City)
This impressive book is a comprehensive resource for anyone, laypersons and professionals alike, interested in eating disorders. The book is organized and written beautifully, and is a cornucopia of facts, suggestions, and hope for recovery. Reading the book is like taking a graduate course in Eating Disorders! I recommend it without qualification.

A Gem of a Resource 5 by .. Elizabeth E. Lehmann (New York, NY)
If you're suffering from an eating disorder, care about someone who is, or even happen to be a mental health professional like myself, who'd like a state of the art sense of what's happening in the world of eating disorders, you've come across a gem of a book. Extremely comprehensive, practical, realistic, user friendly & hopeful, this book is a real find. The only thing that doesn't feel right about it is the words "for Dummies" in the title. Although she's wonderfully clear & easy to understand, the author is no dummy. And anyone who appreciates the wisdom of years of experience & even handed presentation of helpful information, as well as the wealth of resources, is no dummy. One of the many great aspects of the book is it's consciously designed so you don't have to read it from cover to cover, you can easily pick & choose what is of interest to you & feel like you've gotten exactly what you wanted from the book. If you could only select one book on eating disorders, this would be the one to choose.
