How to enjoy a day at the races-and bet to win!
The last two years have seen a record number of Americans tune in for climatic Triple Crown races featuring Smarty Jones and Funny Cide; in 2004, television viewership jumped a whopping 61 percent over the record set in 2003, and the Belmont Stakes race itself drew a record crowd of more than 120,000! This easy-to-understand guide shows first-time visitors to the track how to enjoy the sport of horse racing-and make smart bets. It explains what goes on at the track, what to look for in horses and jockeys, how to read a racing form and do simple handicapping, and how to manage betting funds and make wagers that stand a good chance of paying off. Complete with coverage of off-track and online betting, it's just what anyone needs to play the ponies-and win!
Richard Eng (Las Vegas, NV) is a racing writer and handicapper for the Las Vegas Review-Journal, a columnist for the Daily Racing Form, and the host of a horseracing radio program in Las Vegas. He was formerly a part of the ABC Sports team that covered the Triple Crown.

This book is a must own for anyone just starting out betting at the track 5 STAR no question 5 by .. BOOK CLUB MANIA (PALM BEACH, FLORIDA)
This book is a must own for anyone just starting out betting at the track 5 STAR no question

Good book to start with for the Novice Horse Bettor 4 by .. My Favorite Critic ()
A lot of information in this book that could be used for the Novice Horse enthusiast, but nothing that blew me away.

Excellent, thoroughgoing work. 5 by .. David J. Zupko (NANTICOKE, PA)
An excellent, thoroughgoing work. The best and most honest book on thoroughbred racing published this year.

Previous Knowledge Required 2 by .. C. Huddleston ()
I got this book after going to the racetrack one day and poring over the racing form in confusion. I didn't even bet because I didn't know what I was looking at. I thought this book, being of the "Dummies" variety, would be a good introduction to betting. Wrong!

I found this book very difficult to understand, and one almost certainly must have prior knowledge of betting to understand some of the concepts in this book. The author gives a lot of examples, but they are in such fine print that I couldn't read them! I would need a magnifying glass to see what he was talking about in many, many examples. He progresses very quickly from beginner definitions to advanced betting concepts, and it wasn't organized in a logical, straightforward fashion. This book is not geared toward the casual bettor like me, but more towards someone who already has some knowledge of betting and is looking to set up a money-making system.

After getting about 3/4 of the way through this book, I threw my hands up in despair and gave up. I guess I won't be betting on the horses anytime soon, because I still don't have a clue after reading this.

Great Resource! 4 by .. NewMexJags (New Mexico)
This book has taught me alot about horse racing, and had definitely aided in my enjoyment of the sport and helped me win some money! There are some chapters that are a little boring with unnecessary info.

In the five years since the publication of the first edition of Curling For Dummies, Canadian attendance at curling tournaments and viewership of televised curling has skyrocketed. Twenty new nations have joined the World Curling Federation.

Curling’s profile isn't the only thing that's changed since the first edition was published — so too have the game's rules, equipment, and technique. Profiles of players, listings of television coverage and events, and memorable curling shots also need to be updated for the second edition. As the most comprehensive and up-to-date book available, Curling For Dummies will remain the ultimate curling book, for fans, players, and coaches.

Great reference for new and experienced curlers 5 by .. N. Witcraft (Raleigh, NC)
I picked up curling just after the 2006 Olympics. This book does a pretty good job covering all the aspects of curling, from scoring, sweeping, delivery, and more. This book won't replace a lesson from an experienced curler, but its certainly a good reference once you've gotten out on the ice. This book has the Triangle Curling Club Seal of Approval, if there is such a thing :)

any new curler should read this book 5 by .. Matthew C. Sharp (Lake Oswego, Oregon)
As a new curler, this book was a perfect companion to actually playing. It had everything you need to learn the sport. A must read if you want to curl.

Jessica's Review 4 by .. Jessica M. Bohlmann ()
This book really helped me out. I was doing a research project on Curling and it really came in handy. It had all the information in it that I needed.

Very useful to a dummy like me 4 by .. Nykaenen (Croatia)
I had no idea about the sport whatsoever but having read the book I feel like a professional (even though I have not tried playing it yet!). The book is well-organized, very informative and fun to read.

Nothing 'Dumb' about it! 5 by .. S. A. McKinnon (Royal Oak, MI United States)
The book is great as a stand alone, or as a backup for those of us who have embarked on our curling careers already, and need a little extra help remembering all the phrases, shots, rules, etc.
It also gives some background and history on alot of the aspects of curling, which help you better understand the sport as a whole. Anyone who thinks curling is easy needs to sit down and read the book and sign up for a class. There's nothing 'easy' or 'dumb' about it, but you will meet alot of very interesting people and gain a new respect for the people who have been doing this their entire lives.

An introduction only 3 by .. toemaas (Seattle, WA)
This book has some good pointers and some nice basic information about the rules of soccer, basic skills, etc. The information in the book though is probably not good for teams above U7, or for coaches with some experience coaching. The books concentrates on drills (not games!) that are often not very easily translated into real situations that occur in games. This means that when you put the kids on the field against another team, they are going to be unprepared. If you are a new coach with little to no soccer experience, this is a good place to start. If you are looking for anything more I would look elsewhere.

Coaching Soccer For Dummies 5 by .. Bridget Tobeck (watseka, il United States)
This is a great book for anyone thinking of coaching a soccer team..it is full of great information.

First Time Soccer Coach 4 by .. L. Wright (Wirtz, VA United States)
My 5 year old signed up for instructional soccer, the local parks and rec. deparment needed coaches, next thing you know I'm a soccer coach. Step one, buy a book that will get me started on the right foot, and that's exactly what this book was. This book provided me with the guidelines for dealing with the parents as well as providing me with a refresher on the ins and outs of soccer. I would recommend this to any coach just starting out. If you have previous knowledge of soccer either playing or coaching this may not be the book for you as it is very basic.

Great Drills & Sound Advise 5 by .. J. Geraci (Romeoville, IL USA)
I have been coaching younger children for 4 years, and I wanted to get some new drills that I could use during practices. This book has a really good outline of offense, defense, rebounding and practice drills. There are also some very good points at the begining of the book on how to deal with parents and other coaches, etc... Overall this book is very good to design a practice plan for coaches who are either new to coaching basketball, or are looking for additional or different drills to run.

homerun 5 by .. peaches (west coast)
Baseball is my biggest hobby! Love this book for beginners or long time baseball junkies...we can always learn something from Joe Morgan!

jargons to explain jargons 2 by .. Hai Lu (Falls Church, VA United States)
I had high hopes for this book after reading all the reviews. At the same time, my baseball knowledge is very limited. My biggest disappointment is that the author tried to explain baseball jargons using baseball jargons. In other words, the ideas are not explained in plain, effective language. Maybe the author is "born" to speak the language of baseball. Unfortunately for readers like myself who is trying hard to know more about the sport, the baseball jargon does not come naturally.

Good book for really knowing baseball 4 by .. Gary Bisaga (Leesburg, VA USA)
I am a huge Dummies fan. So when I recently decided to learn more about baseball, I naturally turned to the Dummies guide. What I found was a book that, true to its name, does help a person who knows absolutely nothing about baseball. If you knew nothing about baseball, you could pick up this guide and read the first 3 chapters, and become conversant.

It also has a good deal of detailed information for those who play and want to improve their game. Strategy on hitting, pitching, running, and just about everything else about baseball is presented. This is also good stuff.

So aside from a minor though annoying problem in this book - which I will note in a moment - this is an all-around great book. Joe Morgan, hall-of-fame second baseman, and a cast of other well-known major leaguers contributing bits on their own positions make this book an excellent reference on baseball.

My problem with the book is that this book is difficult for me as a person in the middle ground of those who grew up around baseball, playing it occasionally but not seriously, and never having a deep knowledge of the game. For example, he starts using the player numbering system used on scorecards early in the book, but does not explain it until chapter 18. I have found this kind of problem several times in this book. In fact, it's not so much a matter of the information being lacking - it just seems not well organized or indexed.

But this is a relatively minor point. Get this book if you really want to know baseball!

Joe Morgan is a genius! 5 by .. Navy Bean (Amsterdam/Dayton, OH)
If you think someone whose ego is bigger than the Pampas of Argentina can ever be a genius. Because I find that ego usually clouds intellectual process. And if my line of reasoning is correct, Joe Morgan is the stupidest person in the world.

I once met Joe at a Hummel Convention in San Diego. He was going up to people unsolicited saying, "I'm hall of famer Joe Morgan. Would you like me to rub sun tan lotion on your shoulders?"

And before you start saying, "that's not so bad," it WAS mostly cloudy that day!

Great book for a new fan 5 by .. Broadway Buff (Central New Jersey)
I got hooked watching the Boston Red Sox in the 2004 post season, but I realized that I was very ignorant about baseball. I bought this book in the spring, and it taught me an incredible amount about baseball. I now watch almost every Red Sox game and enjoy the games much more through understnnding the basics and a lot of the subtleties.
The book is written for multiple types of readers, including people who play baseball or coach. I can't judge how well the book meets the player and coach needs, but for a basically ignorant fan, this book is fantastic! It's well organized, so it was easy for me to choose to skip certain sections on my inital read-through, and then go back and revisit them when I felt there was more that I could learn.
If you're looking to learn more about baseball and increase your enjoyment from being a spectator/fan, then this book will be great for you.
