Great Gift ~ Love the Title! 5 by .. Carols Critters (Florida)
I purchased this book for a friend of ours who is 73 years old. He calls us several times per week asking for computer assistance, so this book should help with that problem! Upon receipt I spent a couple of hours reading different sections and it appears to be easy to read and understand, with just enough information to not confuse those who we forget are technically challenged in today's world. I actually learned a few things myself! I think it makes a great gift, as the title is funny as well. Just be sure you explain to the "senior" that there is a whole series of "For Dummies" books and to not take it personally!

Computers for seniors for dummies 5 by .. Robin G. Rogers (Tennessee)
am teaching two older friends to use a computer - the book is great - they love it and it is easy for them to follow.

Computers for Senior Dummies 4 by .. Marie E. Smith ()
This book was very helpful. The material was presented in a very easy format and was easy to understand. Very helpful book.

could have been better 3 by .. James R. Johnson (bayonne nj usa)
I ordered computers for seniors and computers for absolute beginners. both are fine, but they still assume you know something about computers. I still want something that takes you from step one on up. both books are good, but they sometimes skip a step. I wanted something that assumes you have never touched a computer in your life.

computers for seniors for dummies 5 by .. Joseph Suhadolnik (venice,fl.)
if you are 75 and trying to deal with the computer age this book will get and keep you on the right track. the simplicity of the book was written for those of us that are starting to keep up with this new age.it's a must for anyone without any previous knowledge of computers.

I did not get what i sent for 1 by .. c. chartmann (new jersey)
the book is a good book, but this is not what i ordered and had the church order 25 of them and they all came wrong. a day before the graduation of our computer class, i checked the box and it was nothing like we ordered. they said we would get the 8-in-1 with the new Vista information. we had to use the books as the gift anyway, because of me being so busy and trusting i was getting what i ask for, i didnt check the box until the night before graduation. what a fool i gave out 25 books and ordered one for me at home, all the wrong thing. the books went to st augustine's church and my home. even the book they are having me review is not the book i received. i received xp information. 256.00 from the chruch and 15.00 from me. WOW what a disappointment.

Computer Forensics for Dummies 5 by .. Patrick E. Allaire ()
WoW! This is a book that should be read by everyone. Especially corporate heads and some in government. What you discover is that the electronic trails are everywhere and someone in the know can and will retrieve them, if need be. So be careful what you write or do on your computer, there are no secrets!
Good writing, technical enough to keep us geeks in the read, but not so technical that everyone couldn't read it and learn a great deal. This is a book that I found myself going back to for additional information on a subject I believed I understood. It exceeded my expectations in every way.

Demystifying computer forensics 5 by .. Hugh J. Watson (Athens, GA)
If you use a computer, you probably know that there is an electronic trail that follows you, and that the trail potentially lasts forever and can cause serious legal problems. This book demystifies how computer forensics is performed, what to do if you are ever in trouble (or trying to help someone who is in trouble), and tools that can help you. Though the topic is potentially complex, the book is an easy, interesting read. Statements like "An IP address is like a phone number for your computer" help make the material understandable. It is clear that the authors have considerable practical experience in the area and understand current best practices, computer technology, and the law. The book is appropriate for a wide variety of people -- those with a casual interest in the topic, in legal troubles related to materials on their PC, and lawyers who either work or want to work in the area.

Very glad I read this book ... everyone will benefit knowing about this evdence 5 by .. Reality book reader (Las Vegas, NV)
Not only does this book explain what evidence gets left, it helps understand how Wall St execs can be investigated.
Easy to read and understand. It clears up alot of mysteries about what's going on inside computers and networks.

A great book to discover the basics of computer forensics 5 by .. R. Anzaldua (Weslaco, TX USA)
First I would like to thank you for taking the time to consider Computer Forensics for Dummies as your introduction to the computer forensic field. As one of the co-authors, this book was a pleasure to write since the material is written in a way where technical jargon is kept to a minimum while making the material fun and easy to understand. Attorneys, IT managers, computer CSI candidates, and those new to the field who want a basic understanding of how computer forensics works without the need for advanced computer degrees will appreciate this book. Please feel free to join the discussion groups if you have any questions, concerns, or comments. Again, thanks for checking out Computer Forensics for Dummies!

Great book on Windows Vista - A must have! 5 by .. YES WE CAN!!! (DREAMS COME TRUE, CALIFORNIA)
This book is a must have, I have recommended to all my friends and family. Kudos to the Author for publishing such a wonderful book.

Windows Vista All in Desk for Dummies 4 by .. Julia A. Martin ()
Received book on time paged through it a few times lots of good info been too busy to actually use it sure I will though

Lots of chatter, but neglects too many nuts and bolts. 2 by .. From middle America. (Northern California)
I took an afternoon and went through this book from cover to cover - admittedly not all topics drew my careful attention. Too many operational details are missing: hit this key, then go to x and enter ..... etc. In sum, although my system is up and running (and was before I bought the book), I am missing instruction on many basic operations.
Try somewhere else.

WINDOWS VISTA 2 by .. AEF (OHIO)
Windows Vista For Dummies
I have read alot of these books and find this one actually more complicated than the rest. Vista is fairly new anyway!. I bought the TEACH YOURSELF VISUALLY / MICROSOFT WINDOWS VISTA after this book and found it to be a much better learning tool than this one. I prefer visuals anyway and will probably not buy anymore dummy books without visuals. I think most of them are text anyway, so unless they change some of the future content to visual, they can keep the rest. I wish I had saved my money on this one.

Great book 4 by .. Ammon Morgan III (Philly, PA USA)
This is a great book for people who do not understand vista and it's complicated GUI. This was great i got it for my grandparents and now they are asking me about things i have no idea about, and I'm a CIS major. Great book really suggest it

Laptops for Dummies 4 by .. C. S. Leh ()
This is a good basic way to learn about laptop computers. I received it quickly, and Amazon and the sender were both very helpful.

Laptops for Dummies - A critical eye. 4 by .. Mr. David Nicol Angus ()
A comprehensive volume which goes far to fill in the many gaps left by
the inadequate, sketchy, and obscure "instructions" issued with the
laptop. Obviously, there is never going to an all-embracing book for
computers in general, and all of my books on PCs make only passing
references to laptops -- almost as if laptops were beneath their
notice. This is an excellent book and far less frightening than
"Prostate Cancer for Dummies".

laptops for dummies 5 by .. Laurie Baxter (LINCOLN, NE United States)
Very helpful book, with lots of information, a must to read before you consider buying a laptop

Great for beginners, and advanced users, too! 4 by .. Richmond Asiodche (Seattle, WA USA)
I bought this book for my mom and dad, who just recently had their very own notebook computer. The text is easy to read and not intimidating, and it is also a good read for advanced users who want to step back a bit to cover the basics of a laptop.

He Knows what He is Talking About 5 by .. John Matlock (Winnemucca, NV)
Buying a laptop should be easy. I want a system that is very powerful, weighs almost nothing, has a huge screen but small overall size, and runs forever on its internal battery. Unfortunately such a system is hard to find. Therefore you have to make compromises.

And in reading this book I find that I pretty much agree with the analysis Mr. Gookin makes. And I base that on having had about a dozen of them down through the years.

First, decide what you're going to use it for. I use it for programming, especially web programming so I need a web server, a database and some other web software.

That fits into his second comment, decide what software you're going to use. OK, that's a given. Windows (not Apple or Linux).

Screen size - smaller is better for me because the overall system can then be smaller. I'm just looking at code most of the time and don't need graphics.

Service & Support - as he says, go with a big name company, look carefully at the extended warranty. The extra money was worth it when laptops were $2,000+, I'm not so sure now that they've gotten so cheap.

Battery life used to be important and I carried three batteries around. Now with most aircraft having power available it's not nearly so important - and besides batteries are heavy. I've found power outlets in airports, coffee shops, libraries, on trains and other obscure places. I now only carry only one battery.

Physical security, get one of the tie down devices that connect your laptop to the desk. This is especially a problem at college.

I find I'm talking my own ideas. I didn't mean to start preaching. After all these points and more are included in the book. This fellow knows what he is talking about.

Great tiny book for beginners and something for intermediate users. 5 by .. Ignacio Litardo (Capital, Buenos Aires, Argentina)
This tiny guide delivers detailed "how to"s for somebody that really hasn't EVER used a computer. And even for seasoned users, having lists of usual Windows keyboard shortcuts comes in handy.
The style is funny enough at times. At the Glossary (who reads those things :)?) the definition of "drivers": "D are programs that make hardware work. There are printer drivers, monitor drivers, women drivers" without any qualifications I think has the same matter-of-fact humour of, say, Buster Keaton.
The chapter on networking is not so "easy", I suspect most users don't know a thing or two there.
The author is a master at communicating, making simple the obtruse.
One is not surprised to learn he sold more than 14 million copies of his "Dummies" series, and that his "DOS x Dummies" spawned the entire series.

Note that this version covers Windows XP, NOT Vista. For that, surely you'll want the newer edition. My mum has XP, and I've still got one XP around (as most of us who want a working computer :) so if you have XP, buy this edition, not the newest.
He's very sound in that he puts money considerations into the equation, as well as only explaining what Windows can do (in terms of the explanations). Not "third party software". For instance, you only get how to record CDs, not DVDs, for XP only has a CD recorder.
Of course you can get more detailed coverage of topics, but... at this size?
I think that in its genre, it could hardly be improved. That's why I give it 5 deserved stars.

I keep it by my computer 5 by .. ()
This book is full of great information and to the point. I hate books where I think, "Well I'll never need that information." But this book is stocked full of practical and useful computer topics. Stick this book by your computer like I did. I refer to it from time to time and it really helps me.

Quick and Easy 5 by .. ()
Quick and to the Point! I love this book. No extra verbage, just quick, easy steps to get the job done.

good tips 5 by .. (Chicago, IL United States)
this book offers many practical tips for everything about pcs. the section on setting up a pc is helpfull.

A very useful book. 5 by .. Dr. C. BIGGI (Sao Paulo, BRAZIL)
This is a very nice book. Practical and objective. You have in your hands a very useful guide to the mysteries of the Mac world. Its chapters are very clear about how to change to a new world in computers without pain. This is one of the most interesting series edited to this date. Highly recommended.

Mac for dummies book 5 by .. Rebecca Buell ()
This book is very helpful. I wish that this book came in the box with the I-Mac computer. After useing a PC for most my life switching to a MAC can be intimidating. But the book has been very useful.

Great Book for New Mac Users 5 by .. Steven Ramos ()

I was a Microsoft PC user for over 15 years and I recently decided to buy an IMAC. With the new ITouch and new IPhone out, I wanted to combine that with a Mac Machine so that everything can work together easily.

This book gave me a great start to understanding a Mac. Even though I'm good with computers and most of the information I already knew just from playing around with a Mac, the book did give me useful shortcuts and great inside information.

Like other "Dummies" books, this was very easy to understand!

Mac Rules 5 by .. ElkoJohn (Nevada)
I started on an Apple-IIc back in 1987,
but had to switch to PC bc of work.
Have had to hassle with MS through
Windows 95, 97, Millennium, XP and then ugh,
the hell with Vista.
I LOVE MY MAC.
Even Windows XP runs better on my Mac
than it did on my Toshiba.
Anyway . . .
this book was great in helping me figure
things out on the Mac.
PS,
if you want to use XP on your Mac
I recommend downloading the trial version
of Parallels from their website.
The disk sent with my Mac was out of date
for the Leopard, but the downloaded version
of Parallels runs perfect.
The best of both worlds.
Awesome.

This Book is a Must! 5 by .. Constance Eggers (Tucson, Arizona)
I switched from a desktop running Windows to a MacBook the day after Thanksgiving. Although I do have 3 software engineers in the family (2 at Google and 1 at Microsoft) they got my new toy all set up, transferred my files and promptly left me to return to their techie lives in Seattle. I could continually bombard them with questions via email and phone (they wouldn't mind.... really!) but I decided it would just be more practical to have a Dummies book on hand so I don't look quite so dimwitted when I need the answer to the same question a second or third or fourth time. Thus, I find myself reading "Switching To A Mac For Dummies". It really helps. The book is very clear and also quite entertaining. I've laughed out loud more than once. Oh yeah, and I'm learning stuff, too.

met expectations 4 by .. Christopher L. Vandevender ()
good book, much like all the others, this one is actually 10 books in one (its pretty thick), I purchased for a quick review of networking. this book met that need, and went into more detail than i needed, such as specific instructions for configuring servers, etc. the last couple of chapters/books weren't applicable to me, so I didn't read them. Otherwise, this is a great book for getting up to speed on the terms and processes around networking, unless you are already a techie in which case it will probably be too basic. If you like the other dummies books, you'll like this one too.

Excellent Book! 5 by .. Wells Fargo (SF Bay Area "aka silicon valley")
This helped me learn a lot and have a grip on things in the avast world of networking, This is the perfect book for beginners and it will help anyone get started. This book touches on all the subjects and gives you a basic view of how everything works from internet protocol, wireless networking, to Linux to server 03, and so on so that you can determine what path you want to specialize in but it also gives you enough info to "get you by" on any hands on project or job that requires it. Those who complain about this not having enough info are not seeing the clearer picture because if this truly contained all in one material it would have to be between 3000 to 5000 pages long and this book is already a heavy weight at 800. This book really helped me put my foot on the door with a job at a data storage company, I was able to "get by" thanks to this book and I am on the road to learn more "ccna by todd lammle" So far that book is great too, had I not read this book first, the ccna 1000 page book would be impossible to understand.

Para principiantes... pero no tanto 5 by .. Rodrigo ()

Satisfied... 4 by .. G. Ortiz (LA, CA)
This book has a ton of information. Mostly for the beginner, but veterans in the trade may also benefit. I've only used the book as a reference, but I plan on reading cover to cover.
