Customer reviews Know nothing about investing? Start here. by .. Melissa Damon (Lynchburg, VA) I didn't think reading about money/investing could ever be this fun or interesting. Straight talk and clear definitions for all the finance jargon.
Great! by .. C. Lavelle (Indiana) Great book, lays it all out in terms I can understand. I started investing based on this book, and I refer to it often.
Definitely "for Dummies" by .. D. Dollahite (Long Island) I've read several "for Dummies" books, and in general the entire series is well written, concise, and gives you what you really need. However, I was very disappointed in this one. The book is really dedicated to the three methods of building wealth: equity (stocks, mutual funds, etc.), real estate, and small business. But there isn't enough info on any of the three subjects to do much with. You're better off getting a separate book on real estate if you plan on pursuing that. And nothing he says regarding small business is of much use to accomplish anything. That leaves stocks, bonds and mutual funds, which is what most users would purchase this book for. Regarding that, if you are completely new to mutual funds then this is the book for you as it will explain the basics. However, if you are beyond the very basics (i.e.; "What is a mutual fund?"), and are looking to seriously invest, then I think you'll be disappointed. And if you are looking to get into buying stocks directly, then this book seriously falls short. The entire section on stocks really just explains a canned stock report from a given company. Utterly useless unless you plan on subscribing to that service. No talk of forward PE's, valuation, etc.. Also, the author's continual insistence that you should stay in mutual funds because you "can't beat the market" since there are so many pros out there is utterly ridiculous. There are many gurus out there that have proven track records of generating higher than average returns. Just emulating Warren Buffet's portfolio will do that.
I was looking for a book to dig more into stock valuation, company analysis, etc. and this book barely even touched on any of that beyond definitions. I wouldn't even call it Finance 101, since there is very little about monetary policy, bonds, interest rates, etc.. If you've picked out at least one mutual fund in your life (or purchased a stock directly), then this book is way too simple. If you tremble at the thought of picking a mutual fund and have no financial sense whatsoever, then this is your book.
Very Good Book by .. Chandan Kumar (Chantilly, VA) I wanted to start investing and read somewhere you should first do some studies. That's when I came across this book. Very well written, and in simple to understand language. I used to dread 401K, IRA, Mutual Funds, Bonds. Now I am confident I know about them and what I am investing into.
Showed new ways to look at debts, as to if I clear my debt sooner, I am investing in something which gives be interest equal to the interest I pay the bank.
I would recommend this book to all who want to get into investing but are hesitant or don't know where to get information from.
Investing for Dummies by .. Deseret Rose (Las Vegas, NV USA) I bought this for my daughter, who is taking this a college course.
She seems to be happy with it. She asked for this book it as the instructor told her she needed it for the class. Sorry I can't give you more info but I am sure it's a good book.

Peter M. K. Gaines () I like the book, but wish it were less repetitive. I think that Andrew Tobias' book, The Only Investment Guide You'll Ever Need, is more succint. I wish that he would update it given the new state of the economy. 3-4 years makes a huge difference in tax laws.
Great book by .. C. Lavelle (Indiana) Ok...so I'm a smart guy, but the in's and out's of the financial world always seemed more like Harry Potter's dark arts class than something that would ever make sense to me. I'm happy to report that this book does a fantastic job laying it all out in a way that makes perfect sense. I now have greater confidence in assessing my financial options, which is all anyone really needs. I recommend this book strongly.
Good Book - Can't wait to pass it on by .. Marcia D. Perry (Los Angeles) This is such a great book, I will probably by a copy for my eighteen year old sister. The book provides valuable information that is valuable at any age, but even better if she can learn now. Great practical tips on debt management, saving, budgeting retirement, etc.
Great tool for personal purposes. by .. Sofi (Puerto rico) It's just amazing. Every other theme not too well understood is explained with clarity. Website references are a plus. If you have no idea of most financial concepts, what they mean and how to understand them this is a good starter tool.
Personal Finance for Dummies by .. browneyedgirl () Thought the book brought things to light I knew that I was in trouble this book just made me see more clearly how to try to fix things.

Customer reviews review by .. Paul S. Randazzo (Platte City MO) haven't gotten that far in the book. But so far so good. I give it an A+
Great Book by .. Jed D. Hunsaker (San Francisco, CA USA) I'm never disappointed with Dummies books and this one is no exception. Great read, easy to learn.
A baby steps book by .. Mathew A. Shember (Cupertino, CA United States) This is not a book for jumping into WEB development. It claims to be but it really is not.
It's a good intro book for HTML for the absolute beginner. But, I must mention you have to be a reader versus an examples person. There is a great deal of discussion and only so much code examples. However, it did answer a couple questions.
I found this book good for getting to know what is out there. The book offers useful links to sites for getting more information. This saved time and it offers a "warm fuzzy" since it is suggested versus wandering around the Net.
The book also suggests some tools to use which again saved a little time.
I don't know if I would call this a good reference book. For example, it lightly touches CSS, XHTML and CGI and the design suggestions? Well you probably could get a design book to handle that better as I think they are rather basic in this book.
If you can get it from the library or get it used, it might be worth a look.
If you understand basic HTML, you might avoid it.
Just another Dummy! by .. Cynthia A. Briggs (Albuquerque, NM) As a novice or someone thinking about working with HTML, I think this book was over my head. If one had some background in HTML they could probably make full/better use of its content. Pork Chops and Applesauce: A Collection of Recipes and Reflections
and I always thought dummies books were for complete beginners... by .. William T. Delelys (Webster, NY) Caveat emptor to the absolute beginner. This book is not written for the beginning web page creator. It is not written in a tutorial style. It is good as a reference source as you study a true tutorial type book. It discusses tags and their attributes one at a time without showing you how they fit into your web page code. The beginning chapters throw lots of advanced features at you and tell you they will be discussed in chapter 19 etc.
I was completely overwhelmed after 20 min of reading. So what's a beginner to do? I recommend Create Your First Web Page in a Weekend. By the time you get half way through that book then you can use this dummies book as a reference.

Fix common fund problems Customer reviews Making WISE Mutual Fund Investments by .. R. Coulter (West Virginia) We all know every Mutual Fund associate thinks THEIR fund is the best on the market, hence the NEED for a non-partisan book that helps you understand WHAT to look for in a GOOD Mutual Fund. If that sounds like you, I HIGHLY recommend this book. It is TRULY what it says it is...you may be a beginning investor when you begin the book, but you'll feel confident enough to make thorough investigations into prospective funds by the time you finish it! It is an 'easy read' book with easily understandable text.
financial planning by .. Rahul Razdan () Eric does a good job of a broad view of the particular subject matter at hand. My only issue is that the books are highly overlapping. A structure with the original book on personal finance with additional chapters on subtopics would likely have avoided all the duplication.
mutual funds for dummies by .. James A. Beasley (seattle) the book is fundamental and was given to my grandchildren for a start in investing. i am helping generate a spread sheet for them to use as an analytical devise.

Great Book - not just for adults by .. Sherice Williams (San Diego, CA USA) This is a wonderful book for anyone wanting to know more about investing their money and managing finances. I believe it is a wonderful gift for teenagers and college students as most of us do not learn these things in grade school. It's an easy read and can be used as a reference when the young adult starts making their own income and has questions on what to do with it.
Heavy bias but some good information by .. Michael Bushman (GA) The book does contain some very good advice for how to select good mutual funds but the book basicly states that as an individual investor that it is nearly impossible for you to get better returns while investing in individual stocks. This is not the case IF your are willing to do the necessary research on a regular basis. Most non-index mutual funds fail to beat the market indexes consistently and he states that if the professionals can't do it then why could private investors beat the indexes. The simple fact is that if you are willing to do the homework consistently, maintain a diversified portfolio of 5-10 stocks then you can beat the market. The simple reason most non-index mutual funds can not beat the markets is because they simply have to much money to manage. A good managed mutual fund will have to at some point close its doors to investors to continue making great returns and because most of these funds make thier money from bringing in more funds which therefore creates a conflict of interest. This major point is only partially gone over in the book and it seems the writer has written off the entire population as people only willing to check thier investments everyonce in a while and will not perform the research. The author should at least say that beating the market with individual stocks is possible for the investor that is willing to perform the necessary work but for those who are not then with a fraction of the work you can still get good consistent returns through the use of mutual funds.

You don't have to buy this. by .. AJ (Denver, CO United States) I came here to write a review for this book, and found that a reviewer below, "A reader", had already written what I was going to write. This book provides a reader with no information, but with long lists of websites to look at. You can access those websites most often just wasting time (like "A reader" already said). Using search engines like Google/Yahoo is much better than thumbing through this book.
Good Concise Overview to Get One Started by .. John Matlock (Winnemucca, NV) You can't watch television these days without getting bombarded with ads for on line brokerage companies. What's been missing has been a centralized source for information about the whole thing. This book provides that source. It's not complete - if it were it would be so big that you couldn't carry it around - but it's a great start.
You can read this book from cover to cover in just a few hours. That is, just a few hours if you don't take the time to go out on the web looking at the things she suggests. And that right there is the key to this book. Here is a good start that covers the whole field from A to Z, and at nearly each and every point along the way she points you to web sites for more information about specific points.
The problem with going to the web for more information, of course, is that web sites appear, go away, merge or whatever. She admits this, but accepts this risk and gives you multiple sites (you couldn't possibly visit all that she mentions) or suggests ways to find a missing or dead site.
This is a great way to get the basic information you need before getting started with selecting a broker and deciding what to buy.
Get Up To Speed With New Strategies, Tools and Resources by .. Kathleen Sindell (Alexandria, VA, USA) This newest edition of "Investing Online for Dummies" reflects the latest changes and improvements to online investing Web sites. Addresses building an online information system, setting up a basic investment strategy, determining how much to invest, selecting an online broker and trading online, finding the right investments, performing Internet transactions securely, saving on commissions, managing a portfolio, and much more.
A great guide for online investing by .. Henry Cocker () As I surf the Web, I often feel that it's like visiting a library where all the books have been spilled on the floor. The information is there but I don't know where to begin my search. "Investing Online For Dummies" explained how to get started, steered me to free or low cost online services, pointed out the important parts of Web sites, and showed me the process of online investing.

Product Description TCP/IP is always a hot topic because it is and always will be the glue that holds the Internet and the World Wide Web together. To be well connected (network-wise, that is), sooner or later you have to become familiar with TCP/IP. So if you want to understand what it is, what it does, what it’s for, why you need it, and what to do with it, but you just don’t know where to start – this book is for you. If you have to install and set up TCP/IP on your computer at home or on lots of computers for your company, you'll find lots of Hands-On sections that take you through the process step by step. TCP/IP For Dummies, 5th Edition, is both an introduction to the basics and a reference to help you use TCP/IP applications and tools on all kinds of computers connected to networks. Here are some of the many subjects that this book covers: Uncovering the relationships among TCP/IP, the Net, and the Web Exploring client/server and how it is the foundation of TCP/IP Installing and configuring TCP/IP and its applications on clients and servers Understanding intranets, extranets, and virtual private networks (VPNs) Building and enforcing security Boldly going to the next generation: IPv6 If you’re concerned about the security of your data – and who isn’t? – don’t miss the practical security tips in this book, including a Quick Start Security Guide. You can read about advanced security topics, including the security protocols that are part of TCP/IP. You also find out how to use encryption, authentication, digital certificates, and signatures. And if you’re interested in e-commerce, walk through a secure Internet credit card transaction. Customer reviews Make peace with TCP/IP by .. Peter Edward Liverani () The explanations are well structured. Brings you to a knowledge of tcp/ip from 0 to 90 % in a very pleasant and jiffy way
Not useful by .. Adekunle M. Adebayo (Lagos, Nigeria) This book does not deliver on it's cover title. I bought this text thinking it will help me learn the basic working details of TCP/IP. I was totally dissappionted.
Nuts and bolts of the Internet by .. Scott Perry (Orange County, Ca. USA) I would agree with some of the reviewers, and say that it is wrongly titled as "TCP/IP for Dummies", in fact I was suprised by their title and what I actually read. However, I enjoyed the book because I had also an interest in the workings of the Internet. The authors state in the intro that "The thing about the TCP/IP communcations protcol is that it's fundamentally tied in with networking...So, we've included a bit about networks and The Internet..." So it did not delve into great details of TCP/IP, but then again it is an very introductory text. So it worked well in just the right amount of TCP/IP detail with a great thorough introduction to The Internet technology. As to the accuracy of some statements, I don't know because I am not an expert. However, the writers are not dummies, in fact, when someone can take a difficult and complex subject, and bring it down to a layperson's understanding it often is a sign that they really understand what they are talking about. Furthermore, this is an excellent introduction to the workings of the Internet. I had a very incomplete understanding of the hardware/software of the internet, it helped me greatly to better understand many of the terms that I've heard discussed in techie circles. True, the dinner plate allegory did not help at all, but when they discussed matters in a more simple technical way, it was great. I give it a **** four-star because although the organization may not have been perfect and the title is slightly misleading, it still did an excellent job of explaining the internet software/hardware in a thorough fashion.
Book that will satisfy no one by .. Omari Norman (Silver Spring, Maryland, on East-West Hwy) I was looking for a book that explained the nuts and bolts of TCP/IP. Instead the book dedicates six chapters or so to TCP/IP. The rest of it is a superficial treatment that a new computer user might find useful, but that contains little material for the intermediate user (and only intermediate users, not beginners, would even know what TCP/IP is, much less want to read a book titled "TCP/IP for Dummies.") For example, page 197 lists plug-ins for Web browsers, such as Shockwave, Flash, and RealOne Player. Useful for a rank beginner, but not for an intermediate user wanting to learn about TCP/IP. Page 188 explains how to "understand URLs," giving the example of http://www.ibm.com. Again, not very useful for the intermediate user. Meanwhile, there are some TCP/IP basics that are never explained. Ports are not explained very well, and ICMP receives barely a mention. (However, page 64 tells me to "see RFCs 1256 and 2463 for more information on ICMP. This is not at all helpful.) Some of the information is dated or, worse, just plain wrong. One passage suggests that gigabit Ethernet hardware costs a fortune, which is no longer true. Page 298 states that NetBIOS is a "Windows proprietary protocol." It is not; IBM originally developed NetBIOS. Overall, the first few chapters of this book are much too technical for new Internet users, but barely meaty enough for someone who wants to understand TCP/IP in depth. All the remaining chapters are fine for new Internet users, but mere filler for anyone experienced enough to understand what a URL is. This confused mishmash of a book will satisfy no one.
A Great intro to the subject by .. (Washington, DC) I had heard that previous versions were so-so, but this edition had everything a non-expert would need to understand the basics of the TCP/IP protocal. It easily explained the differnce between IMAP and POP3; how FTP works; HTML vs XML; and the section on security (SSL, SSH, etc.) was excellent, as was the hardware section. It truly is dummied down, and don't rely on it if you really want to configure telnet in a linux environment, but for basics it's excellent.

Customer reviews I have edition 3 and it looks good to me by .. EZPowell / Gavin Powell (USA) In fact I read it cover to cover. And given that Linux is used commercially as a server operating system, and usually by dedicated developers as a front-end, why would edition 5 cover only the "front-end" as the latest author calls it. The trick to covering Linux is covering the operating system and not so much the bells and whistles, unless one wants to wind up writing a legal tome (more than one probably).
And come to think of it, I am getting soooo incredibly tired of MS Windows that I am getting sorely tempted to start using Linux as a front-end anyway - so I might be buying the 5th edition of this book someday.
Not for serious Linux users, only for windows type users by .. Serrano (Florida) I'm not a serious programmer, but I've done some C++ programming and was looking for a dipper look into Linux. Unfortunately this book is about a Windows Type Operating System (Red Hat Fedora) and how to installing it and use it. If you're are tired of Windows and all its problems this is the book for you.
Easy to understand and comes with a DVD with the software
Installation of Linux for Complete Idiots by .. Linky (Long Island, NY) This book is awful. I mean terrible. It is so basic. Let's be honest, dummies are not going to use Linux. It just isn't reality. Techie people are going to. This book is too remedial and leaves out a lot of detail for those who want more nitty gritty about how the OS operates. It does do a section on command line which I find bizarre as no dummie would ever jump into console when they could use the GUI.
A very usefull book to get started with Linux by .. Victor da Silva (Amsterdam - Netherlands) I was reluctant to switch to Linux because I thought that it was only for professional computer users.
Gradually by getting more and more information, I choose to migrate totally to Linux...No more Windows operating system ! The most scariest part is undoubtly the command line but Linux for Dummies really helped me to get familiar with the basics and now I can administrate my computer directly with the command line, whithout using the GUI. Very good job !!
I don t use the distro described in the Book since I am a Mandrake user and the main developments are focused on FEDORA core of Red Hat. But the two GUI are well described.
A very usefull book to get started with LINUX.
The latest is the Greatest by .. kc dyer (Lions Bay, British Columbia Canada) This new edition of Linux for Dummies, written by Linux guru Dee Ann LeBlanc is well worth the price. It's packed with the latest information and expertly written in a style that is accessible to computer users of all ability levels. A must have for every Linux user!

excellent audio introduction. by .. Zeyad Morcos (Fall River, MA) It is an almost 90 minutes clear audiotape recorded in 1995 describing all these terms dealing with the web, internet. It start with definition and description (www, homepage) a new way for communication, it open a network of networking. Brief details about history of development. Requirement for usage: computer, and greatly details the advantages and disadvantages of each provider. Also talk about the huge benefit such as looking for college, or even education online. On the other end talk about inappropriate content of internet and different methods for parental control, and touch on the "addicted to". Also give few details about etiquette: do not flame, SPAM. Despite being 1995 information. But most of them will hold true and correct for many years, and I found them very informative despite being familiar with majority of them, but it was fun to get an idea about what internet was in 1996, and get helpful advices about different provider and security. I rated four stars only due to 1996, had I heard it then it deserves five stars easily.
DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME by .. () I have several dummies books, from how to build a PC to CCNA. I had to read this rediculous book when I worked for a very well known DSL provider on the East Coast. This book was trivial, assumes that you are completely mindless and plugs certain products and services shamelessly. Yes, I agree, Hot Bot is a pretty good search engine...but it is not the only one out there. This book has technical incosistansies throughout and is basically a really really long advertisement. Easily the worst dummies book in print, and Im not being a jerk, I love dummies books, Ron Gilster rocks, but this is absolute crap. You can honestly get more informed with a magazine.

A big help! by .. K. Davies () I wasn't sure where to really begin with writing a resume and this book was a big help! I recommend it to anyone who is a beginner with resumes.
AMAZING! by .. C. Taylor (Baltimore, MD) I love the book!! It's an insider's look at the ever-changing world of job hunting--Joyce Layne Kennedy really knows her stuff. She takes you step-by-step through the process you should go through to write a perfect resume. And of course it reads with a witty edge that entertains you while you learn!
I love the core resume to the spin-off concept! by .. Kathryn K. Troutman (Baltimore, MD) Hi Joyce, In Chapter 1, you introduce a very easy Core Resume to Spin-off Resume style! This is great! So easy to focus, target and only rewrite about one-third of page ONE! And you are so right, the only way to write and post a resume in this job market is COMPLETELY TARGETED to the job.
5 Top Target Skills !! All of the samples in the book - 48 of them - written and produced by Kathryn Troutman's The Resume Place, Inc., team - are great. The targeting style with the box at the top, targeting text in the resume, are very helpful for resume writers.
Thanks Joyce for an all new, targeted resume book. Everyone needs to STAND OUT IN THEIR EXACT AREA OF EXPERTISE.
Resume for Dummies, Fourth Edition by .. Nancy H. Weimer (Philadelphia, PA USA) I highly recommend that every job seeker, no matter what your status, read this book. No others will hold a candle to it. I would not be able to describe how much I would be struggling, if it were not for this book. Just take the time to relax, put your feet up and read it from cover to cover. Building my resume came next (I had never done one due to years of service at my previous employer) and I used so many tips in that book while writing it. It actually does a wonderful job of preparing you for all aspects of your job search.
