Awesome book, thank you! 5 by .. Desiree Lacandola (Florida, USA)
I'm very pleased that I bought this book. I really liked the pictures of specific conditions and diagrams of affected areas. I am a visual and auditory type of student, hopefully in the future you can include a CD/DVD accompanying the book.

"A classic."--Andrew Rothery, Times Education Supplement

"Martin Gardner has turned a trick as neat as any in the book itself. He has selected a group of diversions which are not only entertaining but mathematically meaningful as well. Martin Gardner's First Book 5 by .. Sam E. Sibley (Evanston, IL)
The first book by Martin Gardner, writer of the Mathematical Games column for Scientific American. Well written and easy to read; suitable for anyone familiar with high school Algebra. Fun!

Simply excellent 5 by .. Nic (UK)
This book is worth getting if only to find out how to make a hexaflexagon. The problems in it are truly absorbing.

Reeks of Awesomeness! 5 by .. (United States)
After a long afternoon of studying ordinary differential equations, computer science, and japanese, it is great to find a book like this that sucks you right in, absorbs your brain for a couple of hours, and then inspires you to cut, paste, & fold paper. What you see absolutely reeks of awesomeness. I love Martin Gardner! (Last month's reading, Knotted Doughnuts, was equally fun!)

A delight for young and old 4 by .. A Williams (Neutral Bay, NSW Australia)
Martin Gardners column "Mathematical Games" was in the magazine "Scientific American" for so long that he was more than an institution. This was the first of his books to take some of the ideas from the many columns and present them in volume format.

I first came across it in a British edition titled "Mathematical Puzzles and Diversions" in my early teens. From memory it took me around three weeks and two rolls of adding machine tape to finish with the hexaflexagons (don't ask, just buy the book) in the first chapter.

Mr Gardner deserves his reputation as a writer who can simplify complex subjects without talking down to the audience and this is well demonstrated in this volume. Some of the later chapters deal with parts of probability and game theory that skirt around some complex maths while someone with little mathematical ability (such as myself) finds it easy to follow along. The prose is light and easily read while the subject matter is entertaining.

I would recommend this book for someone mathematically inclined in their early teens or anyone in their mid teens or later. If you have a child capable of mathematical and/or logical thought who is getting turned off mathematics by the rigors and dullness of school then this volume may well turn the trick - I know it was influential in convincing me that it was my schooling and not my mind that had ruined my maths ability. I give it only four stars as it is now starting to show its age, otherwise it would have five.

Hexaflexagons and Mathematical diversions 4 by .. Carmen (Oakland, California)
This book is an amazing one and it is definetly recommended to the people who like math puzzles, games, or thought challenges. Also it is a great book to distract yourself. It is a book that you would like to keep in your shelf. Martin Gardner is a great writer and has other great books on many other different mathematical puzzles.

Seasoned with Gardner's interest in the history and philosophy of science, this delightful book is a treasure-trove of puzzles, anecdotes, games, and logical theory. These intriguing problems, collected from Gardner's Scientific American columns, involve knots, interlocking rings, rotations and reflections, logical paradox, two-dimensional universes, chess strategies, and gambling odds.

"Gardner conjures problems that are both profound and silly; exquisite truths and outrageous absurdities; paradoxes, anagrams, palindromes and party tricks. . . . He knows, better than most, how many amazing true things there are in the world."—Newsweek

Pearls from the Martin Gardner oyster farm 5 by .. Charles Ashbacher (Marion, Iowa United States(cashbacher@yahoo.com))
There is nothing like a good paradox to sharpen the wits. Properly presented, they can frustrate you to the point of grinding off the sharp points of your teeth. The title selection from this collection of Martin Gardners' Mathematical Recreations columns from Scientific American is one of the better paradoxes that you will find. The solution is surprisingly easy, once the proper approach is taken.
The other entries are also vintage Gardner, who has no equal in the accurate rendition of mathematical curiosa. Other topics include gambling fallacies, a church of the fourth dimension, games and systems that learn by experience. There are also thirty-seven catch questions in a final chapter that are definitely groaners. Upon initial reading, the answer appears easy. However, the careful and precise wording of the problem often leads to an unusual but correct solution.
If you have a curiosity driven desire to learn mathematics, then Martin Gardner is an excellent place to begin or continue your exploration. Even though the articles collected here were written in the early sixties, the topics are timeless and will continue to intrigue new generations of the mathematically inclined.

Curiosities of math/logic, and more 5 by .. ()
I read this book in the early '70s, and it remains one of my favorites. You don't need to know much math to enjoy this collection of curiosities that are mostly math- or logic-related. The text is a combination of puzzles, instructive prose, and stories. The book is easy-to-read and informative, with many references for additional reading.

Mr. Gardner writes about: a drill bit for drilling square holes; different types of spiral curves; social behavior of the inhabitants of two-dimensional worlds; bar tricks; geometric dissections of polygons; peg solitaire games; the transcendental number "e"; cartoons that are read both right side up and upside down; game-playing machines; and more.

Product Description

Nishiyama Matsunosuke is one of the most important historians of Tokugawa (Edo) popular culture, yet until now his work has never been translated into a Western language. Edo Culture presents a selection of Nishiyama's writings that serves not only to provide an excellent introduction to Tokugawa cultural history but also to fill many gaps in our knowledge of the daily life and diversions of the urban populace of the time. Many essays focus on the most important theme of Nishiyama's work: the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries as a time of appropriation and development of Japan's culture by its urban commoners.

Some jewels and a lot of fluff 4 by .. Jack D. Herrington (Silicon Valley, CA)
This is a tome at 600 pages. But at 48 chapters each one is really small. This is because the book is actually a set of articles. Some of the articles are fantastic and very helpful. Specifically between 18 and 23, which cover text handling for stuff like smart searching and internationalization. Other chapters, like 37, which is about Perl Haikus, are really for the hardcore Perl lover.

For the average Perl user, check it out to make sure that you are getting the content you need. For the hardcore, you were going to by this book anyway, so why are you reading reviews. ;-)

Casual & fun 5 by .. Portnoy Huston (Pittsburgh, PA USA)
This book is a grab bag of fun Perl uses. The obfuscated Perl contests are completely mind-bending - it's amazing what people can do with this language. The games material is a little light, but overall a good read.

High on "Diversions", Low on "Games" 2 by .. James Edward Gray II (Edmond, OK USA)
First let me state that, as with most O'Reilly books, there is nothing wrong with the writing in here. Topic coverage at least goes deep enough on each article to let you decide if you want to go any further on your own. Some articles mearly cover CPAN module and there are better places to get that kind of material, I think. Coverage of Obfuscation is pretty substantial, if you enjoy that sort of thing (I don't). Still the articles themselves are solid.

Unfortunately, I didn't really enjoy the book, in spite of the above. Honestly, I think it's the title. I'm a big gamer who plays pretty much everything and I bought this book expecting to get some gaming content for my favorite programming language. (Note the first word of the title, "Games".) If that's what your looking for too, look on, it's not here. The book has four chapters covering game related material. The first mainly covers the game tool modules available from CPAN and that is sadly slim pickins. The second describes a contest the Perl Journal held and was one of my two favorite chapters in the whole book. The third is all about the Perl Z-Machine "rezrov", which is at least a little informative. The fourth is How to Build a TK Card Game. That's it, for gaming material, be warned.

The book mainly focuses on random aspects of linguistic theory, including NPL. If that's what you're after, this is the book for you.

Product Description

Paul F. Boller, Jr.’s widely admired and bestselling anecdotal histories have uncovered new aspects and hidden dimensions in the lives of our presidents. Now he turns to an uncharted—but unexpectedly revealing—element of our leaders’ personalities as he brings us stories of what the presidents did for fun.

In thumbnail portraits of every president through George W. Bush, Boller chronicles their taste in games, sports, and cultural activities. George Washington had a passion for dancing and John Quincy Adams skinny-dipped in the Potomac; Grover Cleveland loved beer gardens and Woodrow Wilson made a failed effort to write fiction; Calvin Coolidge cherished his afternoon naps, as did Lyndon Johnson his four-pack-a-day cigarette habit; Jimmy Carter was a surprisingly skilled high diver and Bush Senior loved to parachute. The sketches revitalize even the most familiar of our leaders, showing us a new side of our presidents—and their presidencies.

One error discovered 3 by .. J. Smith (Massachusetts)
I have not read all of this book. Just wanted to point out one error. The Vermont judge Eisenhower went fishing with was not Milford R. Smith, it was Milford K. Smith of Rutland, VT. He was my dad and fishing with Eisenhower was one of his favorite memories. Photos of the fishing trip hang (or used to hang) inside Mountain Top Inn, above Chittenden Dam, where they fished.

Hanging out with the Presidents 4 by .. kazoolene (Chicago, IL)
As a fan of Presidential facts & trivia, I was so excited when I saw this book was coming out. Thankfully, it is as much fun to read as I thought. It talks about each Presidents' hobbies and dislikes and offers hilarious stories about them, so funny that found myself retelling them to others. I've been skipping around to my favorities at first, but I definately will finish each and every one, even Taylor!

The only thing missing is some of the controversial stories - JFK and his parties, Clinton and Lewinsky, etc.

I recommend this book for any history lover who would love insights into the personalities and loves of some of the greatest (and possibly worst!) leaders in history!

"Ozark Batpizings, Hangings, and Other Diversions is a significant work dealing with a little-studied aspect of Ozark and American folk tradition. As such it is of value to folklorists, social and cultural historians, and anthropologists, and will remain so for some time to come. It is well written, superbly researched....What Gilmore does is present the typical in such a way that it is fascinating and, in so doing, tells more about Ozark life than can be found in many far more pretentious volumes."- Journal of Southern History

HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS ONE 5 by .. D. Blankenship (The Ozarks)
I enjoyed this one cover to cover. Being an Ozark Native (lived here all my life) and being from a family (as is my wife) that settled in this area well before the Civil War, I was able to relate quite well to the wonderful stories and accounts presented here by the author. This work truly captures the essence of our past and should certainly be read by any who has the slightest interest in the subject. Like another reviewer, I am afraid this work will be relegated to a narrow audience, which is a shame as there are true gems in these pages. This work examines a somewhat lost way of life and sadly, as each year passes, we loose more and more of it. This work covers the period between 1885 and 1910, but it must be said that many of the traditions referenced here lived long after this time period. Recommend this one highly.

Wonderful Reading 5 by .. G. Grisham (St. Louis, Missouri United States)
This book might appeal to a narrow audience, but I hope not. Prof. Gilmore has done a great job detailing the history of just how people of the turn of the century Ozarks entertained themselves. Taken mostly from old newspapers and oral histories you get great insight into the box and pie suppers, community picnics, spellings bees, debates, school plays, singing schools, and other gatherings that people used to spice up their isolated rural lives in the rugged Ozarks. I was amazed at some of the worldly topics that were debated in the schools in the evenings and the pure excitment of packing up the wagon with fried chicken and pies to spend the day at the community picnic.

This book provides a warm look back at a much simpler time. It is wonderful reading!!
