Product Description This comprehensive guide to taking fantastic landscape photographs shows readers how to get a professional looking finish to their own digital SLR photography with advice from five expert photographers. All the essential techniques and equipment for landscape photography are covered in depth in an easy-to-follow format. Experienced and aspiring photographers alike will love the expert tips and hints as well as breathtaking inspirational photography from top photographers including Tom Mackie, Darwin Wiggett and William Neill. Customer reviews Lessons from Five Great Landscape Photographers by .. Conrad J. Obregon (New York, NY USA) One of the problems of books about landscape photography is that there are many different audiences for such books ranging from the photographer who is just learning about the subject to experienced hands looking to pick up a few tips. This book seemed more aimed at the new landscape photographer who understands how to use his or her camera and understands the basic principles of exposure.
The book is written by five of the world's great landscape photographers with each offering a chapter on a different subject. Darwin Wiggett writes about controlling exposure; David Noton about understanding light; William Neill about composition; Tom Mackie about landscape locations; and Tony Worobiec about black-and-white landscapes.
While the first and last chapters are more technical in nature, the other three chapters are devoted to a general understanding of their subjects. The chapter on exposure mentions things like the use of the histogram and the black-and-white landscapes chapter emphasizes the use of Photoshop in converting images from color into black and white. As to the other authors, Mackie, as an example, discusses the importance of planning the landscape photograph before ever taking camera in hand, and methods of treating different environments.
I was slightly disappointed by the chapter on black-and-white. My experience is that black-and-white landscapes require a different kind of visualization then color, but this was unmentioned.
One of the most astounding things about this book was to learn that the authors were photographers who had used large format, film, view cameras and who now used digital single lens reflex cameras for their work. The authors explain why they made the switch; the book may provide comfort to DSLR landscape photographers who have been feeling guilt about not using the large-format cameras.
The chapters are profusely illustrated with the five authors' photographs but I didn't feel the book was a thinly disguised method of presenting portfolios (although all images were quite lovely), but rather that the pictures were truly presented to emphasize the teaching points.
I didn't pick up a lot of pointers that I had not encountered before, but it seemed to me that for someone just getting into landscape photography, this would be a good introduction, without being as simplistic as to tell you the difference between a point-and-shoot and a DSLR.
On the other hand, while the volume will provide a nice review for experienced landscape photographers, those looking to push their work a little further might want to look at something a bit more philosophical and theoretical like David Ward's "Landscape Within: Insights and Inspirations for Photographers" and "Landscape Beyond: A Journey into Photography".
Definately a Five Star Book by .. P H F (Far south of Maine) I took a class from William Neill last fall and enjoyed working with him. I find this book to be of great value to photographers. It is beautifully illustrated with fabulous examples, well written, and loaded with information. So much to learn....

Whether you aim to become a serious photo hobbyist, are interested in turning pro, or want to take advantage of the improved control that dSLRs give you over your photography, this fun and friendly reference will show you how to maximize everything a dSLR has to offer so that you can improve your photography skills, increase your picture-taking and image-editing knowledge, and ultimately, take better photos. Written with just the right balance of technology and techniques in mind, this guide provides you with the know-how on everything from getting acquainted with the basic key features of the technology (lenses, sensors and image processors, and exposure and focusing systems) to the nuances of various dSLR techniques (setting up speedy continuous-shooting burst modes to capture fast action, applying selective and sharp focus, and shooting under the lowest levels of light). Other topics explored include: - Composing your shots with an accurate viewfinder
- Deciding how many pixels your camera needs
- Cleaning the sensor yourself
- Choosing between a tripod or monopod
- Adjusting exposure and improving shutter speed
- Creating time-lapse sequences
- Fixing murky or contrasting photos
With so much subject area covered, Digital SLR Cameras & Photography For Dummies, 2nd Edition not only introduces you to the fundamentals of great picture-taking with a dSLR, but goes beyond the basics. Some of the more advanced topics discussed include working with the various formats of digital photos, minimizing shutter lag and first-shot delays, and fixing up your pictures with various image-editing programs. This is just the book you need to progress from getting started with a dSLR to actually improving your dSLR photography! Customer reviews Not for Beginners by .. Ampersand (Vancouver, BC) A very disappointing and useless book..Please dont waste your money on this book..It will teach you nothing about cameras or photography..This may have been the worst book I ever purchased, double period
Digital SLR Cameras & Photography by .. Chris J. Tofteberg (Anchorage, AK) Having recently gotten my first digital SLR, I thought "Digital SLR Cameras and Photography for Dummies" would be perfect for teaching me the basics of the digital SLR camera. I was right.
For those familiar with the "Dummies" series of books, the layout of "Digital SLR Cameras and Photography for Dummies" (I'll just call it the "book" from here on as the title is a bit long) will be very familiar. Useful tips and other notes can be found in the margins for quick reference. Even the ever-popular cheat sheet is included inside the front cover.
What I like about this book is that it covers everything from what the acronym "SLR" stands for (single lens reflex) to chromatic aberration (a discoloring issue). The digital SLR provides more creative freedom than a point-and-shoot camera does, and the book tells you exactly how to take advantage of these freedoms.
It would seem difficult to write a useful book about digital SLRs, since there are several models and brands out there. The book avoids this issue by discussing the functions of digital SLRs, which are pretty much the same across the board, and not necessarily which button does what. Although there is some of that too. Whether you're a Canon person or a Nikon person or other, you'll get the point.
A book with the word "Photography" in the title would seem to imply that there are plenty of photos inside, and that is true of this book. They are usefully tied to the concepts that the book discusses. When exposure is discussed, photos showing under, over and just-right exposure help explain what the text is saying.
This book is not just for digital SLR newbies. Many people that have digital SLRs may only use a fraction of the features that their cameras offer. For those folks, this book can open up more ways for them to use their cameras. For newbies, the benefits of reading this book are obvious.
I'm a fan of the "Dummies" books (which perhaps says something about me) and "Digital SLR Cameras and Photography" for Dummies did not disappoint. It is a must-read for anyone that is considering buying a digital SLR as well as new owners. All but the most experienced digital SLR users will find some benefit to reading "Digital SLR Cameras and Photography for Dummies."
Digital SLR Cameras & Photography for Dummies by .. Susn E. Perry (Utica NY USA) Digital SLR Cameras & Photography For Dummies (For Dummies (Computer/Tech))
is well designed to teach amatuers like me on the different features of an SLR camera. I have had my Nikon D50 for 2 years and get very good results, but still need to learn so much more. That is the reason for buying the Dummies book....to remember all the ins and outs of lenses, f stops, ISO's and so much more I can turn to my copy of the dummies book to look up the information I need.
Book, Camera, Action! by .. Ned Middleton (British professional underwater photo-journalist & author) The big attraction of this series of "for Dummies" books is that we who buy these products have little respect for our own knowledge and plenty of respect for those who do and are able to write books like this.
I am currently converting from film photography to digital photography and some aspects are quite daunting. I have, therefore, purchased several books and tutorial DVDs on the subject and am working my way through them all. The title of this product suggests it is the right place to start and, on reflection, is exactly where I should have started. For those of you, who like me, are converting to digital for the first time, grab your camera and a copy of this book and work your way through from cover to cover until you are conversant with the new technology. It really will give you a good grounding.
That, however, will only work very well if you are already conversant with photography. If you are new to photography altogether and a digital SLR camera is your very first camera, you may have to learn a few basic lessons of, for example, the correlation between film speeds, shutter speeds and aperture settings - which really do need to be understood, before you study this book.
David Busch clearly knows what he is talking about and is able to put that knowledge into an easy-to-follow format for us Dummies to read and, as I say, I wish I had read this book before getting into some of the more technical tomes I also purchased.

Ignorance is Not Bliss by .. Richard Wirtz (Knoxville, TN USA) I wish I could comment without rating the book. My problem is, I wanted a primer on digital cameras, and I thought this was one. It's not, of course; it's about SLRs, whatever those may be. For a primer on digital cameras, I recommend the Quick Snap Guide to Digital Photography.

Customer reviews New to Digital SLR by .. Digital1 (East Coast USA) I have been shooting film with Canon SLR's for over twenty years and have only explored digital pictures with non-slr cameras for certain applications. As I now feel that digital has gotten to a professional level at an affodable price and I am getting ready to move to full frame digital SLR, I found this book to be very informative as to what differenses I can expect with digital photography, the pluses and minuses compared to film, and a very good reference.
If you are familiar with technical aspects of SLR photography and want a good technical reference to digital photography, I would recommend this book.
DSLR photography in details starting with very basics by .. D. Turkmen () After purchasing my first DSLR camera, I knew I had to buy a book about Digital SLRs since I had very limited knowledge about them.
This book does a great job by starting off with the very basics including the history of digital cameras, how a digital sensor work comparing to a film, how the lenses work (physics class, anyone?), and how camera measures points for focusing and light metering etc. This kind of low-level (in computer terms) information helps you understand how your camera's hardware work to produce a picture. With this knowledge, you can later understand better why using certain technique or supplying a specific condition gets you a better picture.
It also has a nice glossary at the end where you can check the definitions of terms such as "Shutter Lag","Parallax Compensation", or "Matrix Metering"
If you are a new DSLR owner, and you have no problem reading/understanding some technical explanation, I highly recommend this book.
Covers all the bases... barely by .. Brett M. (New Brunswick, Canada) I've been into photography since December '07 and I purchased this book hoping to improve my technique somewhat. But in all 300 pages of this book I really didn't learn anything that would improve my skill.
Some of the things he talks about in the book ARE interesting, but completely not relevant to photography. For example, page after page he explains different image compression techniques, or how a CMOS works vs a CCD. Great.. how does this help me master how to use a dSLR? If you've JUST bought a dSLR (say, within the last week or two) and want to move up from Green Box mode then this may be for you. Otherwise look elsewhere.
Mastering Digital SLR Photography by .. Aleasha K. Jefferson (Edmond Oklahoma) This book was the single book I read from cover to cover to find out all the bells and whistles on my Canon XT! From a - z, I learned how to take better pictures before putting them into a photo editing program. Mastering Digital SLR Photography gave me a better appreciation of taking pictures with confidence. Easy to read and understand, this single book took me from being just an amateur to begin my road to becoming a professional photographer.Mastering Digital SLR Photography 2E
Mastering Digital SLR Photography 2E by David D. Busch by .. Elaine Esposito (Westbrook, Me USA) I am new to the digital D-SLR world and moving from point and shoot to composing my own picture. Searching for all books that can help me in this process and this book is certainly one of the best I've read. It's easy to read and even provides some chuckles. I rate it 5 out of 5 stars for what information I'm looking for.

Product Description If you're a serious photographer, you know that no other camera offers as much sophistication and versatility as the digital SLR. The drawback to this sophistication comes in the form of tedious and lengthy user manuals that can make it difficult to find the essential information you need to get started. Quick Snap Guide to Digital SLR Photography provides you with a concise introduction to the most important features of your dSLR camera. Each topic is covered in two- or four-page spreads with plenty of illustrations and images, making it easy to follow along. Eliminating the frustration of timeconsuming user manuals, this book is the ideal guide for any new dSLR owner who wants to start taking great pictures right away. Customer reviews Too general to help. Save your money; you really don't need this book. by .. RJL (Texas) I am new to dSLR cameras and was looking for a book that would get me beyond the point and shoot world I had been living in for so many years. Basically, this book just tells you what buttons to look for on the camera and sort of what they do; but this is something my Pentax User's Manual already does in better detail. This book does try to present some principles of basic photography, but ends up doing so in broad vagaries, so do not buy it if you are looking for a clear discussion of aperture vs. ISO vs. shutter speed, etc. Buy it only if you want some direction on what buttons you should be looking for on your dSLR and nothing more. I checked out The New Manual of Photography by John Hedgecoe from the local library and found it to be infinitely more helpful and informative. I might buy that one instead, but I've already sunk $20 once, so this time I am going to be careful.
It's okay by .. M. Lewicki (Vancouver, BC) I'm not a pro photographer but I knew about half this book from common sense as an animation and film student. This book is only for people who have never touched a camera.
Just like it says by .. Travis Taylor (Forest Grove, OR United States) It is exactly what it advertises. It helps you understand the SLR world and what you would want out of a camera. I loved it.
Prosumer reference for the new or prospective owner by .. Cathy (Pennsylvania, USA) I would describe myself as a committed amature or a prosumer photographer. In the next few months, I will be upgrading to a digital SLR in the 6-10 MP range. But which one? I consider myself knowlegeable about photography, but the array of features of dSLR cameras was overwhelming. Which are going to be important to me, given my typical needs?
This reference was just what I needed! Using a generic composite illustration created (through the magic of Photoshop) from three or four different popular dSLR cameras, this book walked me through common features located on the camera body, as well as typical menu options. It explained what each feature does, in what situations you'd typically use/need that feature, and the advantages and disadvantages of "tweaking" that particular adjustment. Then, it moved on to different popular flash options, including different kinds of flashes, common settings, and how each works with the camera.
Finally, this book discussed various types of lenses, advantages and disadvantages of each, which are typically most (and least) expensive, and situations in which it does and doesn't make sense to purchase that lens. It also discusses ways in which a dSLR can work with lenses and flashes you might already own - even manual ones from film days.
This is not a book on how to compose a photograph, but rather, on the mechanics of actually setting the camera to capture your shot. It doesn't dumb things down, but it doesn't get into anything too mechanically or scientifically technical. (I don't want to BUILD a camera - just USE it!) It explains options in language that should be easily understandable to anyone who is a sophisticated enough photographer to want a dSLR in the first place.
I still don't know what model dSLR I want to buy, but, with this reference, I am now equipped to comparison shop. BUY THIS BOOK!
Good Beginner book by .. Bob Buyer (CT) I am new to DSLR's. This was a good book to get me comfortable and on my way. I would recommend to new users.

Customer reviews great book! by .. Rutu Mehta (San Diego, CA) This book is a glorified manual.. which is exactly what one needs if they have a good photographic eye, but are not sure how to work the camera with their artistic angle... Lots of details and pictures! Love this book!
More readable than the manual by .. Karen L. Vandewater (Jackson, MI USA) Most of the information I found in this book was similar to the manual but in a format that made it easier to understand.
Dave Busch's Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi/450D Guide to Digital Photography by .. William Kerns () Helpful in clarifying the manual furnished with the camera. Unfamiliar terminology is sometimes used in this guide as it is in the manual. Believe it would be improved with a little more "how to" prose.
Style of writing subpar by .. Amused () Busch's Xsi Guide is comprehensive, covering many topics in greater detail than the manual. However I found his writing style to be extremely bland. Granted, I understand this is a technical manual of sorts. But even still, Busch's writing skill is average at best. A wide reader of books may instantly feel annoyed once they delve into the first few pages of the book, as if they are in for a boring ride.
I find it akin to the level of writing found in those e-books online you can purchase on topics which include Get Rich Quick, Gain 10 pounds of muscle in 2 weeks, Winning the Lottery, etc.
Maybe I'm just being picky, but I always found 4.5 star-Amazon-rated book purchases to be a very entertaining and educating read. This one was not.
Very helpful supplement to the manual by .. Raymond W. Wolfgang () As one reviewer put it, this is a glorified manual - but that is the strength of this book, and I recommend it highly to beginners, intermediate users and anyone who is "manual challenged." The book goes beyond the manual, however, in discussing lighting, for example, lenses, maintenance, and updating the firmware. None of this additional material is going to do anything for a professional or an advanced amateur, but will be very helpful to all us lesser photographers.
A new Canon XSi user, I wanted to change a camera setting on several occasions, could not find the instructions in the manual or locate the menu item or button, but promptly got the help I needed in this book. I don't go anyhwere without it.

Customer reviews What I have been looking for by .. M. Johnson (SC) This is exactly what I have been looking for. I am not new to photography, but I have been away from it for a long time. I needed a refresher course on a few things and this was it. It did not go in to long drawn out descriptions, but had just the right amount of information.
Excellent guide to understanding SLR lenses by .. R. Child (West Haven, UT USA) Excellent book. Well written and easy to understand. Being a beginner in the area of digital SLR's, this book gave me the information I need to understand the different types of lenses and what to look for when I buy new ones. The information in this book makes it easy to determine which lens to use for which purpose. My photography has improved greatly after reading this book.
Great Learning Tool for new SLR owners by .. Michael D. Newcomer (Xenia, OH United States) As with all of David Busch's books I have so far, this one is very helpful. I am new to dSLR photography and this book taught me a lot about lens construction and how and why they do what they do. It was very useful in helping me identify which direction I want to go with lenses in the future.
Well-focused explanation of lenses by .. Terrence (Solon) This book was a revelation for me! I purchased a fairly advanced digital SLR without having a lot of experience, and have been struggling with learning all the nuances of photography and the equipment used. Lenses have been one of the biggest puzzles. What lenses should I get? Why does one 70-200mm lens cost $300 while another one costs $1700? How do I choose among telephotos and wide angle lenses? This book answers all those questions, and a lot more.
It's arranged in two page and four page layouts, with each set of pages dealing with a specific aspect of selecting or working with lenses. There are chapters on improving the quality of your results with any lens, using filters, and the correct use of every lens control. I learned about "bokeh," depth-of-field, perspective, and how to shoot great close-up pictures with the lenses I already have.
I'm glad that there is a book that takes just one aspect of digital photography and goes into it in detail. This is a wonderful resource for anyone who has purchased a digital SLR camera and now needs to know how to go the next step with lenses.

A very worthwhile book for both experienced and new digital photographers. by .. Ken Smith (Christchurch, New Zealand) Although not new to digital photography I have found this book reveals many aspects of the subject which in many other books are frequently not explained fully enough to totally grasp the concepts or are explained in such detail that one has to fathom what it's all about.
Explanations are clearly detailed on how to optimize such subjects as exposure, balancing white point, controlling color, archiving images and numerous others aspects of digital photography.
Kevin gives readers the opportunity of trying a number of exercises relating to the contents of the book and even offers images which can be down loaded from his web site.
This book is well illustrated with explicit explanations and the setting out of topics makes for easy understanding. A book well worth reading for both the enthusiast and experienced photographer.
Digital photography newbie by .. Michael Anstett (Omro, Wisconsin) After much thought and reluctance I finally have made the transition from film to digital and purchased a DSLR. I needed a book to help me make the transition and decided on Kevin Ames' book. A very fortuitous choice on my part indeed. He writes in a fashion that is interesting, informative, to the point and most importantly easy to understand. As a result of using the book as a guide I have enjoyed the digital transition thoroughly and have come to realize I have made the right decision.
What impressed me the most was when I had a problem registering for downloads from his website and I emailed him. I was expecting an email in return. Got not an email but a personal phone call from Kevin to help me with the problem!! Kevin was extremely helpful. He not only took the time to solve the original problem but gave some very good advice on other issues as well. His enthusiasm for photography and willingness to share with others his knowledge and expertise is evident in the book and was borne out by a personal phone call from him. I am very impressed. Buy the book, you will not be disappointed.
Right on Target by .. Synthy (New Brunswick, Canada) I have enjoyed this book which provides a good blend of 'understanding your camera' with 'how to work magic with it' in CS2. I have recommended the book to others; especially those confused with all the camera and CS2 technologies. I refuse to lend it as I'm afraid I won't get it back.
If you are buying only one Digital SLR photo book, get this one! by .. George W. Kommick (Boynton Beach, Florida United States) For those not fortunate enough to attend one of Kevin Ames' workshops, as I recently did, this "Dummies" book is the next best thing. Whether you are a beginner to digital photography or a practicing professional, Digital SLR Photography with Photoshop by Kevin Ames is a valuable addition to your "toolbox."
Ames is that rare combination of artist and teacher, and this book is one of the most comprehensive, clearest and easiest to follow "how to" books that I have come across.
I've been a photography hobbyist for more than fifty years and the early chapters on fundamentals were still a worthwhile refresher. As a serious amateur my pictures are important to me, so I found Ames' unique approach to non-destructive image processing, disciplined file organization and foolproof archiving to be extremely valuable and essential information.

Customer reviews Digital Photography for Dummies 8 Books in 1 by .. Eddie G. Daniels (Havelock, NC USA) This book is great. All I expected and more. Price was more than reasonable.
wealth of photography information by .. Bill Coleman () This is a very thick book. But it is a wealth of information on digital photography. You can use it as a reference or read the entire book. Most books you get on photography are outdated, and have not got much information on Digital Photography. this an up to date one.
Disappointing by .. Michael J. Snyder (San Antonio, Texas) I found this book particularly annoying in part because it continually suggests the reader can learn MORE about a given topic of interest by buying another book by the author. It blows off Mac and I found it a waste of money.
"Aim" is off by .. Allan B. Stevenson (fairfield, CA) The book is filled with info, but it "focuses" on the digital SLR, rather than the point and shoot. There should have been a warning in the description. It's still useful.
Digital Photography for Dummies by .. Beverly Bechtel () This book is huge and covers most anything one can think of on this topic. I bought it for my husband who has recently acquired a digital camera. He hasn't begun to even scratch the surface but has already found it helpful and knows it will as he tries new things.

Customer reviews Not for know-it-alls. by .. FredM (New York) If you have 40 years of experience and feel you already know everything, this book is not for you. However, if you think there are some things you can learn, you'll find lots of meaty information in this book.
I've reviewed several of this author's books, and there is one thing that Busch does especially well, and that is to write for a specific audience. This Pro Secrets book tells you the kinds of things that pros all know, but which the rest of us are eager to learn. The most remarkable thing I found in these pages was the depth with which the author approached many mundane topics that are covered in too little detail in introductory books.
Yes, Busch does tell you how to distinguish between the two most common sources of blur in an image. But he provides detailed examples and shows you how to build simple testing apparatus you can use to pinpoint exactly how much your own photography suffers from these afflictions. That's a lot more valuable than the tired old "rules of thumb" that introductory books saddle you with. He also describes other causes of blur, and how to counter them, as well. Advice to use a faster shutter speed or a tripod is only the beginning of the discussion. This in-depth approach is what I would call a "pro secret."
It's an oversimplification to say that Busch merely tells you the differences between wide-angle and telephoto lenses. He provides detailed explanations, including the most easily understood optical diagrams I've ever seen, so that I understood, for the first time, the difference between an ordinary wide-angle lens and an inverted telephoto design. I'm glad this kind of information is a secret no longer.
The mixture of meaty information and interesting do-it-yourself projects in this book may be rare in other digital photography books, but it seems to be a context in which Busch thrives. His more recent book David Busch's Digital Infrared Pro Secrets has the same kind of interesting, engaging focus. If you feel there are some things you can learn, I recommend both of these books.
Many of These "Pro Secrets" Aren't Much of a Secret by .. Ed Schoch (Los Angeles, CA) I'm an experienced amateur photographer who has owned 35mm SLRs for about 4 decades. I bought this book because I recently made the transition to digital, and I wanted a good book on digital SLRs. Unfortunately, this is not that book. For a start, in the Introduction Busch states that this book is for those who have mastered the material in his Mastering Digital SLR Photography (which I have since purchased, and found to be more useful than Pro Secrets). If this information had been included in the description of the book it would have saved me the trouble of buying and returning it.
More importantly, much of the information in this book hardly qualifies for the appellation "pro secret", such as: distinguishing between the two sources of blur in an image (subject motion and camera motion), and what to do about it (use a faster shutter speed, use a tripod); the differences between wide-angle and telephoto lenses, and why a tele lens is needed for sports and nature photography; and how aperture affects depth-of-field. In short, a lot of the information in this book would be in any Introduction to Photography book or course.
Will help your photography by .. C. J. Millard (Horicon, WI) I am very pleased with this book. I bought three books by Busch on Digital SLR photography. Quick Snap Guide, Mastering Digital SLR Photography, & this one. All three are good books, this one has so much good information & tips that I highly recommend it. He covers many little tips that have help improve my photography by leaps & bounds. One part that jumped out for me is coverage of Focus, the pitfalls of auto focus, & explained to me in a way I could understand hyperfocus. Also has extensive coverage of lens, choosing the right ones, etc. While there aren't specific recommendations on actual lens, the tools to judge them for yourself are there. Written for advanced amateurs & beyond.
NOT WORTH THE MONEY by .. J.D. in D.C. (Washington, D.C.) IN THE INTRO, the author explains that too many books talk about digital manipulation and Photoshop. He says this is a book for people who "just want to learn about photography." Well, when you buy a book about photographic techniques, that's fine. But when you buy a book about DIGITAL photography, you expect some emphasis on digital photography. With this book, you get way too much info on "rembrandt lighting" and "side lighting" in the studio.
AS FOR THE QUALITY of the book, it looks very outdated. The photos are 1960s French-Canadian or something -- and if the photos in a PHOTOGRAPHY book aren't updated, why would one assume that the text is anything other than a cut-and-paste from an older publication? And the photos are all faded matte. Don't expect anything glossy or new looking.
There are hardly any subjects covered in this book and it is overall just a mess. It's too amateur for most most users, but somehow manages to be too complex for beginners. The author and editors just never figured out their target audience and instead threw a bunch of random things together in an attempt to make a book. Do we really need a whole chapter on "Advanced Infrared Photography" and a whole chapter on "Pro Lighting and Studio Techniques" in the same book that devotes an entire chapter to the telephoto lens?
IF YOU WANT A GOOD BOOK that focuses on the digital element of digital photography, I'd recommend "Digital Photography: An Introduction" by Tom Ang (the fully updated 2nd edition). There are tons of photos, examples, and vivid color. It does discuss a lot of Photoshop techniques, so those without an editing program may not enjoy it. Really advanced digital users may find it somewhat basic, but I think most users are basically intermediate, and this book fits the bill. Either way, it does get your creative juices flowing! (And no, I didn't write the book or get any profits from its sales!)
a wealth of knowledge for all DSLR users by .. A. Tan () this isn't your run-of-the-mill 'pictorial' photography book. the contents cover mainly the use of your DSLR's features as well as useful technical details. i see it as more of a technical manual but written in a way as to hold your interest and encourages learning. the focus here, as the title rightly points out, is using your camera's controls (as well as lenses/photographic accessories/lighting aids etc) effectively rather than a guide on taking photos (altho that is covered along the same line). well one ought to learn one's tools before being able to use it effectively. i see myself thumbing through this once in a while as a great reference guide and expect plenty of sticky notes and dog ears to come along.
