nice book filled with not-so-cheap- recipes 3 by .. JoAnn Hinksmon (USA)
I enjoyed the nostalgia the book provides very much and appreciate the author's endeavors, but was a little dissapointed with the recipes themselves. I was hoping to find a book full of dirt-cheap recipes (under $4 per recipe) I can cook for my family. I found 6 recipes for veal, one for pork loin, and several for large cuts of meat (which amounts to expensive). Several recipes called for more than one type of meat which raises the cost of the recipe and there were several entertaining yet not-so-practical recipes for such meats as squirrel, racoon, rabbit, and one for pork neck. This was a wonderful trip down memory lane, but not the practical guide I am looking for.

Great recipe's & stories !! 5 by .. Lance Rivers (Palmer, MA USA)
I love the old recipes and the stories and ideas that are in it were even useful right now!!! Very quick delivery!

Surprising 3 by .. Dana (Australia)
Quite frankly, I found this a little disappointing. Flipping through the pages, there is nothing to indicate that these are recipes from a time of such hardship, apart from the few little snippets at the bottom of some of the pages, giving some fact about the 1930s. A recipe for Banana Cream Pie surprised me. Glad to know that bananas were easily and cheaply obtainable - as I suppose they must have been, as this is apparently a depression era recipe. The book could have been so much better with just a few embellishments - such as the occasional picture, or interesting and useful facts about life during the Depression, such as average wage, cost of eggs or milk or basic staples. There were no substitute dishes - along the lines of "mock - whatever" True, the recipes are simple, without enormous lists of ingredients, but the book lacks flavour. The "Farmer's Wife Cookbook" has a lot of the elements that could have improved this book.

Depression Era Recipes 5 by .. Albert G. Ellis (Burlington, NJ USA)
As a child of the depression, it was a way of remembering what the women of that era had to do to feed families often larger than those of the 21st Century -- families of farmers fared much better that those in the industries (which often became defunct) and for white-collar workers when there was no money to pay their wages. We "murdered through", we thrived, we learned serious lessons to do more with less, and to substitute. Would not want to repeat the depression era, but feel very fortunate recipes were concocted to get us through it with a smile on our face.

A good book 3 by .. ()
Anyone who is into History will like this cookbook. Many of the recipes don't look appealing but it contains a lot of interesting facts about lifestyles in the 30's.

Rutgers University Project on Economics and Children 5 by .. Yana V. Rodgers (New Brunswick, NJ)
Rudy, a thirteen-year old boy, and his family face extreme hardship during the Great Depression. More than half of all workers in Akron, Ohio, had lost their jobs, including Rudy's father, and new paid work was difficult to find. Ma waited in relief lines for what could often be stale and moldy food, and Rudy's sisters found sustenance at the soup kitchen and local mission. Not wanting to be a burden on his struggling family, Rudy decided to take a step similar to other teenagers he had heard about: he hopped a train to go West as a hobo. Dreams of a better life in California and the chance to send money back home helped to sustain him as he experienced hunger, cold, fear, and fatigue while traveling. Along the way, Rudy learned of a hidden network of kindhearted strangers who made it a point to feed hungry hobos passing through.

While the Great Depression may seem like a distant and obscure event to young children, this exceptional book brings the topic to life with its moving text and realistic illustrations. According to the author's note, a quarter of a million teenagers turned to hobo life as a survival strategy during the Depression, facing issues similar to those that the homeless face today. As historical fiction, Rudy Rides the Rails does an excellent job in providing children with a rich context for understanding problems of unemployment, scarcity, and recession in the economic world around them.

A picturebook featuring dark, softly painted yet realistic paintings by award-winning children's book artist Chris Ellison 5 by .. Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA)
Author and novel-writing teacher Dandi Daley Mackall presents Rudy Rides the Rails: A Depression Era Story, a picturebook featuring dark, softly painted yet realistic paintings by award-winning children's book artist Chris Ellison. Though Rudy Rides the Rails is a work of historical fiction, the story and earthy art tones are meant to capture the spirit of Americans who lived through the hard times of the Great Depression. Young Rudy leaves home in search of work, or at least hoping to give his family one fewer mouth to feed. He rides the rails as a hobo puts in backbreaking effort, and finds that the kindness of strangers goes a long way. A special glossary of Depression-era and hobo terms (such as "Hoover blanket" for newspapers used as blankets, because many blamed then-President Hoover for the bad economy) and hobo signs (such as a smiling cat to represent kindness) rounds out this fascinating and nostalgic picturebook, recommended for children who are just about ready to make the transition to chapter books due to the quantity of story text.

Beautiful, fun, inspiring! 5 by .. Grateful Reader (rural, Ohio)
I loved this realistic slice of what life was like as a teen hobo during the Depression. Hoboes left secret signs carved on trees or buildings to warn fellow hoboes of trouble ahead or kindness and a good meal. A touching, uplifting story--a book for every age!

What kind of floors do you live on – carpet, hardwood, or dirt? Does it affect quality of life? This is the poignant story of one boy growing up in the foothills of eastern Oklahoma, the first of eight children, loved and cared for by hard-working but uneducated parents. From the beginning of the Great Depression of 1929 to the end of World War II in 1945, you will share the day-to-day hardships and occasional disaster, as well as the daily joy of just being themselves, as the author shares his worst and finest memories of childhood. Intermingled are the nightmares and stories related by a superstitious grandmother who lived with the family for some time. The family survived as the hired hands on several dirt farms until the advent of World War II changed the very essence of their way of life.

A Delightful Read 5 by .. ()
I don't know when I have thoroughly enjoyed a read like I did Henry Custer's Dirt Floor. This heart-warming tale begins with Henry's birth in Checotah, Oklahoma. Born into poverty, in an unpainted shack with hard-packed clay for a floor, Henry came into this world to the arms of loving parents. Dirt Floor is the wonderful journey of Henry's growing up years as the family moves from place to place trying to make ends meet.

Have no doubt about it, this is not just some ordinary family reminiscence. Henry is a master story-teller and he captures his readers right from the start and brings us along on all his childhood adventures and struggles. Dirt Floor is a glimpse into another time, another world, where evenings were spent reading by a kerosene lamp and baths took place on Saturday night in an old washtub - oldest first, because the young ones peed in the water.

A treasure and a legacy for Henry's family, Dirt Floor is a very special book with lessons for all of us. It is my hope that Mr. Custer will take Dirt Floor to schools in his area and share this wonderful story with children growing up in this computer age. There is more to be learned here than how to make a "bean flip."

I read a review about this book from a different site. Bought this one and all I have to say is "Oh Come On". This is shoddy work, poorly edited.

A Trip Down Memory Lane 5 by .. Mary E. Erickson (Grand Junction, CO United States)
This book was truly a trip down memory lane for me. Having grown up in the same era as Henry Custer, I can identity with many of his growing-up experiences Although not quite as old as the author, he brought to mind many of my own memories of depression days. The account is interesting, informative, and sprinkled with lots of humorous incidents. I loved the story where Henry was caddying for the young man who thought he was doing his young caddy a favor by autographing the inside of his ball cap. Unfortunately, Henry was not that impressed and doesn't remember what happened to the cap signed by Bob Hope.

This is a book for everyone. Those who lived through those days will smile, recalling the days of outdoor privies and Model A Fords, purchased for thirty-five dollars. And those who have only read history book accounts of this long-ago period will gain new insight into Henry's more personal description of a time when dirt floors were one of life's hard realities.

A Trip Back in Time 5 by .. ()
DIRT FLOOR was a personal history lesson on one of the most interesting periods of American history. Custer took me back in time to the point that I could understand what it was like to make do with so little during the Depression. He was born without the presence of a doctor, and from then on he learned how to make do. This family did what they had to do to survive, and Custer tells his story openly and honestly. I enjoyed the book tremendously and learned a lot!

Eye-opening Family History 5 by .. ()
Dirt Floor recounts the author's boyhood as he was born along with the Great Depression, made due with extremely little as a small boy, and scraped through the pangs of his teenage years hopping from trouble to trouble. The author's style is upbeat, yet poignant as he recalls his father's life-savings purchase of a car that ran only once (ouch) and the awful death of a schoolmate (Billy Rabbit). A wonderful story of his family's struggle to survive during a difficult time in American history.

Beautiful Book 5 by .. tanderbe (Nauwigewauk, New Brunswick Canada)
Orginally purchased for my mother, I purchased it also after looking through it. The original reason for the book was to attempt to id some etched glass, the glass was not in the book, but it was worth it anyway. Beautiful photos, good writing, I saw pieces I had not known exsited. Who knew that such elegant depression glass was out there! I would not recommend it for the "flea market" or "yard sale" groupie, one of his Collectors Encyclopedias may work better, but it is still a very nice book and well worth it if you collect or deal in higher end depression glass.

Great guide to inform and direct you ! 5 by .. Isabel Luff (Spring, Tx United States)
This is another fave of mine from Gene Florence! He sure knows what he is writing about!!!This book is loaded with color photos of many different types of depression glass.I never realized how many patterns, and companies, there were out there!!!He also is very thorough about listing what pieces were in what colors and the values for each color.
Overall a fantastic book!

Product Description

I am convinced that at birth the cake is already baked. Nurture is the nuts or frosting, but if you’re a spice cake, you’re a spice cake, and nothing is going to change you into an angel food.

Tall, slender Violet Mathers is growing up in the Great Depression, which could just as well define her state of mind. Abandoned by her mother as a child, mistreated by her father, and teased by her schoolmates (“Hey, Olive Oyl, where’s Popeye?”), the lonely girl finds solace in artistic pursuits. Only when she’s hired by the town’s sole feminist to work the night shift in the local thread factory does Violet come into her name, and bloom. Accepted by her co-workers, the teenager enters the happiest phase of her life, until a terrible accident causes her to retreat once again into her lonely shell.

Realizing that she has only one clear choice, Violet boards a bus heading west to California. But when the bus crashes in North Dakota, it seems that Fate is having another cruel laugh at Violet’s expense. This time though, Violet laughs back. She and her fellow passengers are rescued by two men: Austin Sykes, whom Violet is certain is the blackest man to ever set foot on the North Dakota prairie, and Kjel Hedstrom, who inspires feelings Violet never before has felt. Kjel and Austin are musicians whose sound is like no other, and with pluck, verve, and wit, Violet becomes part of their quest to make a new kind of music together.

Oh My Stars is Lorna Landvik’s most ambitious novel yet, with a cast of characters whose travails and triumphs you’ll long remember. It is a tale of love and hope, bigotry and betrayal, loss and discovery–as Violet, who’s always considered herself a minor character in her own life story, emerges as a heroine you’ll laugh with, cry with, and, most important, cheer for all the way.

From the Hardcover edition.

Great read 5 by .. MystinaMarie (Illinois, USA)
This is a really great read. The story is gripping and original and the characters are ones you don't see in every novel. The story is unique and untold with it's own interpretations of love and hate, excitement and suspense.

You fall in love with the main characters, both their positives and negatives, but in the meantime there is a whole array of background characters and events that find their way to the surface with an exciting electricity. If you are a woman you'll find yourself relating to Violet's pining for the bad-boy w/ a good heart character of Kjel (Shell).

I also really like the way in which the story is presented. At the beginning of each chapter an elderly Violet (main character) addresses you, the reader, to recap some era or events. Then it moves onto the past where, from a narrative standpoint, Violet's story is told as it occurred.

My only fault is that the recaps are entirely in italics, sometimes a page and a half. I personally find italics a little difficult to read in great lengths, but other than that everything was great!

Oh My Stars 5 by .. Jean P. Slovak (Crosby, Tx United States)
Wonderful book written by a great author!
Lorna Landvik is a great storyteller. My biggest problem is putting the book down to get anything else done. I've just ordered another book by her.
"Oh MY Stars" captivated me from the first page. I felt like I had lost a good friend when it ended. Very very enjoyable.

My first Lorna Landvik Book - LOVED IT!! 5 by .. Carol Feeley (Maryland)
A woman I worked with lent me this book and I read it in two days ... it was EXCELLENT. My favorite authors are Nora Roberts, Catherine Anderson, Janet Evanovich, Sandra Brown ... I'm now adding Lorna Lanvik to that list!

While the book started out somewhat depressing, I think it was overall an uplifting story. Like with Janet Evanovich books, parts of this book actually had me laughing out loud (then laughing until I cried, as my husband looked at me like I was nuts!)

Incredible Book! 5 by .. Todd R. Sorensen (Seattle, WA)
This was one of the best books I've read in a while. Wonderful, richly developed characters take you on an incredible journey from heartbreak to triumph. I read this all in one sitting because I just couldn't put it down. You can bet I'll be checking out the rest of Landvik's work!

Don't miss this one 5 by .. L. Manstrom (CA USA)
Hands down, Landvik's best work. I loved it, everyone I've loaned it to loved it, you will too!

Downmarket Deco on Main Street 5 by .. Robin Benson ()
Most books about Art Deco rightly cover the fine art aspects of the movement but the authors of this lovely book explore the way commerce used deco styling in mass produced products available on any Main Street. It would be a good few years before an art style was used again to sell things, namely pop art in the mid-Sixties.

Look at the many photographs of everyday items in the book and it is clear that manufacturers copied whatever deco style elements they wanted to enhance the sales potential of their products, at the same time a group of industrial designers where developing America's unique design style, streamline and contributing more elements to be copied, a good example are the three speed lines that popped up on many products.

I think the illustrations in the book are well chosen and they really do cover everyday items in use during the Depression years and nicely the text is broken up with various interesting sidebars like the one on Dolores Del Rio's moderne house or festive season graphics or Deco Mexicana. To compliment this excellent survey have a look at 'Streamline' (ISBN 0811806626) by Steven Heller and Louise Fili, basically a visual book with several hundred examples of everyday graphics. Both books cover so well two exuberant art styles that everyone could share and so were truly democratic.

Life is getting more complicated for Reverend Jeb Nubey. Angel, the oldest of his 'adopted' orphan waifs, is now a teenager, and is making his life miserable. Jeb is still keen on pursuing the charming schoolteacher, Fern Coulter, but his old adversary, Oz Mills, is crowding the way. A mysterious crime in the apple orchards has the whole town speculating, and to top it off, an infant girl has been left abandoned on the white preacher's doorstep. The fact that the child is black adds tension to the situation, and Jeb is forced to look at some of his new neighbors in a new light. As Jeb gets caught in the vortex of Depression-era racism, his leadership of the Church in the Dell is tested, as is his ability to keep his growing family safe.

An Awesome 3rd Book! 5 by .. Cheryl A. Clay (Kilbourne, OH)
This is the 3rd book in the Millwood Hollow series. But you don't need to read the series, as each book stands alone. The other two books being "Fallen Angel" and "Nazareth's Song". The book is historical/fiction with just a touch of romance.

Our story takes place in Nazareth, Arkansas as Jeb Nubley the town banjo player former liar and ex-convict is the pastor of Church in the Dell. The town has seemed to all but forgotten Jeb's past as things have calmed down and Jeb has settled in raising the 3 Welby children - Angel, Willie and Ida May. Jeb has even finally won the heart of his sweetheart Fern Coulter. But soon the quiet erupts as in the middle of the night a small bundle of a baby is left on his doorstep. The problem being this is no ordinary bundle of joy as it is a black baby. Since this story takes place during the depression we see how fast the town turns against the minister of Church in the Dell. Oddly as quickly as the baby was dropped off the pastor of the black church in Hope, the nearby town drops off a young girl, Lucky to help out. Jeb knows there's a connection between the baby and the young girl but she's not talking. So Jeb sets out to solve the mystery of baby Myrtle and Lucky while trying to hold the family together against the hatred towards him and Fern and the children as they all stand united to give the two the proper home they so desperately need. Jeb tries to change the town's hearts and minds. As his friendship with Louie, the pastor from the church in Hope, grows all are taught lessons of God's love beyond measure. The end of the story has its ups and downs with sadness and joy, but in the end - everyone must read for themselves, as this story does not end as expected.

Reading this book will make you desire to read the other two books "Fallen Angel", and "Nazareth's Song". After you read this book I'm sure you'll be like more me wanting and waiting for more books to come. But for now enjoy this book, as it is a page-turner must read for lovers of historical/fiction that can't be put down and a definite reread and read again.

Whisper Town 2 by .. Amanda Killgore (USA)
As the Depression grips the nation, a young minister finds himself the accidental foster father to three orphans. Adding one more shouldn't be much different, but this child is very different. The baby girl abandoned on his doorstep is not white, but he is. To Jeb that makes no difference, but it makes a huge difference when he begins trying to find her a wet nurse and in his interactions with the town folk. Jeb and his make shift family find themselves plunged into a violent backlash of hatred and racism. Yet, this makes him all the more determined to hold true to his convictions and do right by the baby girl. Unfortunately, the overall book lives up to the era in which it is set, the Depression. Though historically accurrate, it's rather a downer, bringing up reminders of a world most would prefer to forget.

Good for the beginner, can't replace a big book 3 by .. Brian S. Walker ()
Does have lots of patterns, If you have a collection of green you want to identify this is a good cheap book. The pictures are mostly on a red background, distorting the colors to an awful avocado green. The glass is much prettier than it looks. Prices are OK, divide by 2 and that is what you should pay outside of a specialty/city dealer (with no chips, no obvious wear). Boy, are some people going to hate that last sentence.
